Surfing UK Emma Feloy gives you the low down on how to hit the UK waves in style! Spring is here, the swell is rolling in and the water is warming up – wriggle into a wetsuit and dive headfirst into the UK surf scene. Never surfed before? No problem! Book a lesson at one of the many surf schools nationwide for a safe and simple introduction. They’ll have you standing up and feeling ‘stoked’ whilst riding the waves in no time. Laid back and loose, Newquay, Cornwall is the self-styled surf capital of the UK. Local ‘dudes’ ride the waves sporting their year-round costume of boardies, beanies and bare feet. Clustered close to the beach, surf lodges offer convenient board storage and wetsuit drying rooms. Many of the UK’s most prestigious surfing competitions take place here: join the throng of beersipping, salty-haired ocean lovers watching Britain’s best battle it out on the infamous Cribbar Reef. Grabbing a slice of the epic ‘liquid corduroy’ action doesn’t have to involve a pilgrimage to Newquay. Cornwall’s quieter beaches, Bude,
Polzeath and Sennen near Land’s End, host pumping waves without the swarms. Dedicated wave chasers can clock up some miles with a UK ‘surfari’. Take in Pembrokeshire and the Gower – both located in Wales, the North East of England, and the entire Scottish coast. Warm northern hospitality belies the frosty Atlantic Ocean so chuck on a thicker wetsuit to ward off the chill. Add a hood into the equation and resemble a bobbing ninja as you defeat the ‘ice-cream headache’ curse! So get (wet)suited and booted and plunge into the ocean (no toedipping please, go for it, all out). Exercise isn’t the only benefit – the relaxed surfer attitude is a surefire antidote to that backpacking compulsion to do it all. Beware... shredding those waves is seriously addictive. You have been warned!

Working in the fields... It’s the season to head for the fields! Agricultural jobs are physically demanding but a great chance to work outdoors and meet new people. Off the Cornish coast, the Isles of Scilly’s flower farms have diverse vacancies available. Roles vary from picking flowers surrounded by picturesque fields, to packing bouquets and communicating with customers. In Scotland, fruit and vegetable picking seasonal jobs run from February until November. Handpick raspberries, broccoli and potatoes in a milder climate. Rain won’t put a dampener on the picking as a lot
of farms have polythene coverings over their produce. Accommodation is either at the farm itself or in well-equipped caravans and cosy cabins. Farm jobs are an enjoyable way of spending time amid the flora and fauna of the countryside but do search online and make contact before you set off. Animal lovers may seek roles such as lambing ewes and caring for cattle. Previous experience may be required, so dab farmhands who are prepared to get their fingernails dirty are in luck. Pack your hat, hiking boots or wellies, roll up your sleeves and get stuck in!

Free Festivals In the words of Pink Floyd, ‘money, it’s a gas’. Empty pockets often curb any aspirations of dancing the summer away at our nation’s ubiquitous music festivals. But, good news for the backpacking reveller... it doesn’t have to be like that. Britain is a hotbed for the age-old free fest; home to a cascade of events where not a single penny is needed to gain entry. From tiny daylong boutiques right through to marathon musical celebrations, a feast of soaring harmonies awaits. Jazz and blues enthusiasts will be doo-wopping to the double bass in both the North and South as two of the UK’s biggest metropolises run events. The Manchester Jazz Festival in July plays host to the crème de la crème of the genre, while London’s Ealing Jazz Festival also attracts stellar names to get your inner Miles Davis purring. Godiva Festival in Coventry and the Cardiff Big Weekend will get your feet stomping with a wide

Godiva is particularly popular, the Midland’s marathon playing host to Kasabian, The Enemy and The Fratellis in recent years. Set in the historic, picturesque grounds of Cardiff Castle, the Big Weekend is the centrepiece of the Welsh annual carnival. Expect an explosion of colour and culture in the land of the valleys. Bin your brolly and escape the notoriously unpredictable British weather at Tramlines in Sheffield. Held in July, all the music is contained in the City Centre, a mere hop away from each other in the area’s various venues. With an electric line-up of up-and-coming local, national and international acts, the event regularly wins awards for the best metropolitan festival. And it’s all for free!

Hailed as the ‘Granite City’ due to a series of major architectural commissions, Aberdeen’s maritime museum and well-established art gallery warrant investigation. Take a refreshing walk along the city’s sand beach as waves crash in from the North Sea before strolling along the cobbled medieval streets of Old Aberdeen.
Aberdeen Sitting at the heart of the Cairngorms, Braemar offers plentiful opportunities for seeing wildlife in the spectacular countryside surrounding the small village. Braemar Lodge: www.braemarlodge.co.uk
Braemar Following the murder of King James I in the 15th century, Perth was replaced by Edinburgh as the capital of Scotland. These days an attractive riverside embankment frames the alluring Tay Street promenade filled with a charming array of quirky shops and cafes.

Although recognised internationally as the ‘Home of Golf’, St. Andrews’ appeal stretches further than those illustrious fairways. Saunter along the sweeping West Sands beach before refuelling at a promenade cafe with a filling portion of fish and chips. Retreating inland, alleyways connect the small town together, from the iconic ruins of St Andrews Cathedral to the Gothic St Salvator’s Chapel.
St. Andrews Built upon a series of rocky crags that surround the soaring ‘Arthur’s Seat’, Edinburgh is home to the Scottish parliament and an evocative old town that rests in the shadow of the magnificent Edinburgh Castle. Running from the Castle to Holyrood Palace, the city’s famous Royal Mile is lined with pubs and clubs where you can rub shoulders with the locals.

Merely a short tube hop from a host of centralised attractions, the cool district of Shoreditch has become a popular stop-off on the backpackers’ map of London. Nestled within the main strip of Shoreditch High Street with its single speed cycles, indie credentials and retro-cool-attire, the Dictionary Hostel stands as a last line of defence to an ever increasing price tag in London’s fashionable East End.
The Dictionary – We recently sent the rather tasty Toby on an adventure into the Big Smoke, making trend-setting Shoreditch his temporary home. The comprehensive, jovial nature of the Dictionary paints a travellers’ village portrait - an all inclusive set-up found within a district usually more jaunty and scattered. Minimalistic decor and eco-friendly furniture adorn the internal organs of the hostel, inherently slicker than the average backpackers’ abode commonly found within the capital’s core. Merely a short saunter from the equally hip Hoxton Square or a light ramble from the straight-lace of Liverpool Street tube station the hostel was, at the time of my visit, two thirds of the way through a triple-phase renovation process. 24
The ongoing transformation is set to yield two hundred beds, a self catering kitchen, laundry facilities, a games room, common room and an on-site cafe, which are expected within the hostel by the end of April 2013. Boasting a fashionable zest that is particularly London-mod-chic, this clean, yet quirky, progressive hostel swanks an intrinsic aura of effortless cool. Emulating the localised laid-back motif of nonchalance, the Dictionary is perfect for those lo-fi hangout weekends or for East End partygoers resting their weary legs. Residing within the peripherals

of its sister venue – an open access jivy little number known as the ‘Translate’ bar – it is
London a common stop-off for those skimming the pages of the East End’s trendy chapter. Translate allows for movers, shakers and conversationalists alike to intermingle across the reconditioned wooden floors and warehouse effect decor.
By providing guests with a destination in which to eat, sleep and socialise, alongside the opportunity to throw twisted shapes at discounted prices at Translate, the Dictionary offers an all encompassing nature that will benefit backpackers, tourists and twilight dwellers alike. No definitions required in this dictionary!

Upon the turning of the proverbial page, at first light Translate offers a day time hang out and eatery. Though a free light breakfast of coffee, bagels and croissants is served in the hostel kitchen, a larger selection of appetising delights are available within the bar. The establishment caters for guests at a fraction of the cost of local eateries, all the while set to a soundtrack of down tempo beats. read more articles at www.backpaxmag.com

L ndon Freebies: Top 5 The Undercroft: Tucked away in the Undercroft of the South Bank Centre, catch local skateboarders showing off their skills while the Thames flows on by. Established in the 70s, this prestigious skate park is awash with vivid graffiti and cool vibes. Well worth a look. Tate Modern: Housed in the former Bankside Power Station, the Tate Modern has been freely exhibiting cutting-edge art since the millennium. Inside, cavernous galleries ingeniously occupy the old turbine hall and three large underground oil tanks. The building’s soaring chimney strikes a powerful image. Street Performers at Covent Garden Market: Roll up, roll up and witness the dazzling street performers of Covent Garden! Pavement entertainers attract huge crowds with jaw-dropping displays that will make you gasp in amazement. Dig into your pockets for some loose change and reward these talented street artists. The Barbican Centre: Born from the architectural style of Brutalism, this labyrinthine complex transports visitors into a 1970s concrete maze of picturesque gardens and interconnected walkways. Get lost exploring eccentric free exhibitions in the Curve Gallery before enjoying panoramic views from the rooftop conservatory. Postman’s Park: Hiding within a stone’s throw of St. Paul’s Cathedral, this peaceful park has been paying tribute to the noble deeds of common Londoners since the 19th century. Engrossing ceramic tiles narrate fatal acts of heroism, immortalising the brave acts of these unsung heroes. 26

The lavish splendour of the Royal Pavilion Gardens encapsulates an exotic, oriental flavour reminiscent of the Moghul palaces of India; the ideal spot for an affordable, Taj Mahal-esque photo opportunity.
North Laine, in particular, embodies Brighton’s laid back, cosmopolitan café culture. The city’s dynamic nightlife definitely hits all the right notes; cuttin’ and scratchin’ its way to the forefront of the British club scene, led by local resident Fatboy Slim. From fresh air to fresh beats, and culture on every corner, this free-thinking city is sure to spark your imagination and kick start your own creative spirit.

Bask in Bath’s Beauty Cobbled streets, stunning architecture and a certain ‘magical’ feel, draw history enthusiasts, film-makers and backpackers alike to the city of Bath. Rumour has it that the ancient Romans left Britain because they could no longer stand the constant rain. Whatever the weather, purchase an audio-guided walking tour of the Roman Baths, built over 2000 years ago, or indulge at the modern day Thermae Bath Spa – four different aromatherapy steam rooms and an
open-air rooftop pool offering panoramic views. Sweeping around in a half moon shape, 30 terraced houses make up Bath’s Royal Crescent – one of the UK’s greatest examples of Georgian architecture. Join the boho crowds at The Porter – a cosy vegetarian pub that also hosts live music. Try a pint of West Country cider – it’d be rude not to!

With a historical heritage that stretches back through the ages, Exeter stands proudly alongside its grand cathedral within the heart of Devon. A former Roman settlement, this cosy and intimate city is now home to a plethora of charming alleyways where rows of quaint shops dwell amidst a fleet of traditional fireside taverns. Roll on up at the Exeter Globe Backpackers and spend some time in this West Country gem.
Globe Backpackers
Adventurous Alex, our roving reporter shimmied his way to Exeter, gateway city to Devon. The Globe gave him the warmest welcome! Arriving in Exeter around midday under a congregation of ominouslooking clouds, I set off from the train station in search of Globe Backpackers. It couldn’t have been easier to find as a ten-minute walk soon led me to the red doorway of this centrally located hostel. Greeted by Paddy, the amiable Irishman on duty, I was settled into a simple but spacious eight-bed dormitory. Along with three private rooms, Globe has five dorms of both mixed and single sex varieties. Downstairs on the ground floor, a self-catering kitchen stocked with free tea/coffee and two fridges means that everything from a full meal to a quick snack can easily be rustled together. 32
Captivating with their bright and colourful decor, the walls of the Globe are adorned with travel photographs and eye-catching images – although none quite as grand as the richly detailed mural that adorns one side of the building’s entire outer wall. Adventurous owners, Caroline and Paul, who have now hung up their own backpacks to focus on creating two great Devonian hostels, had taken the photographs during former travel days. Spanning the globe, a range of diverse cultures hang from the walls reflecting the spirit of travel that this hostel is clearly founded upon.

Relaxing in the sociable lounge area, my first afternoon was spent mingling and I was struck by the community feel that exists at Globe.
– Exeter
The ‘family’ of long-term residents mix harmoniously with short-stay travellers to create a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Making myself comfortable in the lively common area, I soon felt like part of the ‘family’ and within minutes I’d already been invited out for a birthday bash that evening.
After a fun night out, I descended to the attractive Historic Quayside where large crowds populated the river’s banks for a relaxing Sunday afternoon. Exeter is steeped in a history that stretches back 2000 years and no building epitomises this heritage more than the cavernous cathedral, which rises imperiously above the city. Boasting an awe-inspiring interior, the gothic ceiling swelled above me in perfect symmetrical waves, spectacularly rounding off my Exeter adventure. www.exeterbackpackers.co.uk
Exeter has a bustling nightlife with live music taking centre stage. Intimate venues such as ‘The Cavern’, ‘Time Piece’ and ‘Mama Stones’ all craft an underground music scene offering up plenty of live billings. Near the cathedral, cobbled alleyways house authentic ale taverns, with none more famous than Sir Francis Drake’s favourite pub, the Ship Inn. read more reviews at www.backpaxmag.com

Adventure West With spring in full swing, Backpackers are flocking to the South West like proverbial sheep to experience West Country charm in a whole host of different ways. Kissing the shores of Newquay and Cornwall, and its 600 miles of stunning coastline, the outdoor pursuit of surfing is most synonymous with the region. However, upon delving deeper into its crevasses, a myriad of outdoor exploits can be found. So, what is the best... of the rest... of the West? Coasteering, a new sea-edged endeavour, sets a high tide ride for traversing coastal zones through scrambling, canyonning or literally ‘diving in at the deep end’ so as to get from point A to B. Increasingly popular within maritime destinations such as Penhale Adventure in Newquay and Torquay’s Fremington Adventure Centre, coasteering is a pursuit perhaps best left for the warmer months, unless you’re of slightly thicker blubber. If this sends you leaping inland like a petrified kitten,
then perhaps revert to your primate ancestry with Tavistock Tree Surfers. One of a number of branch-based pursuits in the western region, they offer suspended activities such as tree jumping, zip lining and high ropes. Sorry, no bananas included. Buried in the splendour of Cheddar Gorge, with not a whiff of its cheesy namesake, X-treme Adventure Caving offers an entrenched adventure experience for the price of a few local Scrumpys. In another dairy direction, those who like their al fresco escapades served with a slice of hilarity, the annual Gloucester Cheese Rolling competition may be just the dish. Some like it on toast, some like it in a spud, others like to chase it down a steep slope! Taking place at Coopers Hill in May, this well matured occasion dates back to the fifteenth century. The winner gets, well... cheese.

Populated by 60,000 students from two universities, this hotspot for live music has sticky floor venues such as Rock City and the Bodega Social Club. Or, savour a quiet tipple away from the hustle

Wandering Duck A secluded network of canals snake their watery way across the British Isles, linking north to south and east to west. Over the years these rural waterways, once the preserve of horse-drawn freight barges, have gently evolved into something of a secret Shangri-La. Wandering Duck, the UK’s first floating backpackers’ hostel meanders through these idyllic surrounds at stroller’s pace. Located just outside the Peak District National Park, we think this unique, independent venture (run by the lovely Ruth and Mark Bratt) is a real one-off and a great addition to the northern hostel scene. So why not set your
imagination afloat on this chilled-out houseboat, taking in a handful of England’s hidden idylls as you go? After transforming the fortunes of a hostel that they managed in New Zealand, Mark and Ruth headed back to Blighty in search of a unique British venture. They dreamt of offering a great experience to travellers eager to see northern England’s best bits. With the Wandering Duck, they’ve more than accomplished their vision! Comfortably equipped to sleep eight guests, their cosy narrow boat roves up and down some of the most picturesque canals in the country.
Hadrian’s Wall Take a walk back to the time of Roman Britain and explore the ruins of Hadrian’s Wall. Spanning a staggering 73 miles across the North East and North West of England, it’s been crowned as the largest ancient monument in northern Europe. The colossal construction was ordered by Emperor Hadrian in AD122 and took a total of 6 years to build! Many think it was created to keep 38
out the Scots, however historians believe it was constructed as a form of border control, to monitor British people flowing between the North and South. Once standing at 15 feet high and up to 10 feet thick, the ‘frontier’ was a busy, multi-cultural district occupied by civilians of the Roman Empire. Hadrian’s Wall now provides one of the most tranquil walks in the whole of the UK!

Legends of the N rth 1957... the year it all began. Being the epicentre of the 1940s and ‘50s skiffle scene, Liverpool – home to over 350 different bands – certainly put itself on the music map. Following the birth of British rock, the city formed Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – the most popular group in music history. Whether it was their unholy haircuts, inconceivable number of hits, or their rifling ‘rock n’ roll’ roots, the band better known today as The Beatles, provided Britain with a musical past to be proud of. They paved the way for the North to become British rock music’s unmatched home. The Beatles’ fame started the ‘British Invasion’, 40
creating an explosion in America, paving the way for bands such as The Who, Rolling Stones and many more. Following a successful two decades rocking Britain, it all began to drop, making way for the dance scene of the ‘80s and ‘90s. It wasn’t until the opening of the 21st century that The Beatles’ influence came alive again with bands like The Kaiser Chiefs, The Pigeon Detectives and Arctic Monkeys admitting to using the musical power of the North as the footing for their career. As The Beatles once said: “Shake it up baby now”... and that’s exactly what these legends of the North did!

Welcome to Cardiff Bursting at the seams with restaurants, bars, exhibitions and parks, Cardiff is a multi-cultural core in the historic county of Glamorgan. Cathays (pronounced Catays) is a backpacker’s haven, a district packed with traditional and offbeat eateries that dish up Welsh cakes, rarebit, and Glamorgan sausages, as well as international cuisine. Cheerful local pubs and cosy tearooms in the heart of ‘studentsville’ cater to the huge university population. Majestically
towering above the sprawling green acres of Bute Park is Cardiff Castle. Soak up the iconic monument’s historic splendour on a guided tour, catch a glimpse of the panoramic views or watch footage of the castle’s colourful history, spanning 2000 years. Don’t miss Cardiff Bay, where gently lapping water and squawking seagulls contrast the bay’s modern cityscape. Cardiff also has a vibrant music scene, from eclectic to mainstream, with intimate gigs and concerts year round. Underground, breakthrough bands and popular music pulsate through the veins of this vivacious city.
Brecon Beacons Wales’ spiny, striking mountain range, the Brecon Beacons, is one of the country’s most beautiful national parks. Pen Y Fan, proudly described as South Wales’ highest mountain, offers an eagle-eye panorama of the Beacons. Upon reaching the exposed pinnacle, you’re confronted by a vertigo-inducing drop as the hillside sheers away into the lush valleys. Scattered over the wild hillsides, bunkhouses provide the perfect base to soak up the fresh air. Welsh mountain ponies wander freely
across the countryside and the Brecon Mountain Railway offers up the region’s beauty in vintage comfort. Legendary wet Welsh weather means that the grass is nearly always greener on the other side of the border. So pack your waterproofs, just in case, and you will be rewarded with unspoilt vistas that are the perfect antidote to crowded, bustling cities.

Explosive Edinburgh Edinburgh boasts a rich history with striking contrasts of tradition and modernity. Explore the cobbled streets of the Medieval Old Town, and stroll down the Royal Mile – a central thoroughfare that stretches from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Abbey. Edinburgh Castle, which dates back from the 12th century, is perched atop volcanic rock – although don’t worry about eruptions – the volcano is extinct. See the contrasting architecture in the Georgian New Town, built in 1767 to discourage emigration to
London (the Old Town had become too cramped for the burgeoning population). If you have an eclectic taste in fashion, hang out in the buzzing Grassmarket – a popular place with a murky past: public executions and hangings once took place here. Learn all about Highland Dress at the Tartan Museum. And, the whisky distilleries are a must!

As the capital of a country that boasts encapsulating landscapes, a rich history, and plenty of attractive men parading around in kilts, Edinburgh is one of those cities that will entice you back time and time again. Characterised by a vibrant culture, an intriguing past and prominent yearly festivals... it’s no surprise that Scotland’s beating heart is so popular with the avid backpacker.
Budget Backpackers – Our blond bombshell Becky has been on the move again.. this time to bonnie Scotland’s capital city for some fun and frolics. It was a jam-packed trip! Budget Backpackers was on my bucket-list – I’d heard through the traveller’s grapevine some topnotch reviews. I was intrigued by stories of a funky VW camper-bar and the ‘beehive’ – a relaxation pod for visitors to revel in. On arrival I was greeted by an interior brighter than a tartan tapestry, which complimented the hostel’s cheery staff perfectly. Vibrant paintings and fuchsia pink doors lined the hallways as I hurried upstairs to offload my heavy bags. A long day of travelling always requires an evening feast. For those missing home comforts, ‘Mums’ – Budget’s favourite local diner – will 46
certainly cater for those rumbling tums! Once fully fed I practically rolled downhill back to the hostel’s bar where the Black Headed Panthers – a delicious cocktail concoction – began to flow. I was soon on my merry way out for the hostel’s infamous bar crawl. Illuminating the common room like a blissful sunrise, the brightorange camper was my first port of call in the morning – a full English breakfast was much-needed. Food is affordable and tasty, with special deals offered daily so backpackers can stretch those precious pennies... everyone was lapping up the ‘beer and burger’ for a fiver. Or,

The Big Five... Africa may be famed for its safari parks but guess what? Scotland offers its own wildlife experience; seas surround the Scottish Isles, teeming with majestic marine life. Rather than lions and giraffes, Scotland’s big five consists of seals, puffins, porpoises, dolphins and whales. Yep, whales! To see them up close, it’s all aboard for a boat trip. The Isle of May, a National Nature Reserve, is popular; you’ll also spot guillemots, razorbills or eiders. Calm waters are essential 48

With an evocative historical centre that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001, the city of Vienna is lavishly populated with culturally savvy locals and striking architecture, especially around the famous Ringstraße. Often referred to as the City of Music on account of its illustrious heritage – Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms were all born here – ‘Wien’ hits just the right note for those passing through this spring.
Hostel Ruthensteiner – Treehugger Dan is the fabulous winner of this issue’s BLOG competition! Why not review your favourite hostel for us to get online or in Backpax? My business partner Ben had to lend some Segways (two-wheeled self-balancing battery-powered electric vehicles) to Pedal Power over in Vienna for a large tour. I jumped in as co-pilot for a change of scene from Budapest, and to clear my head a bit. We stayed at the Ruthensteiner Hostel, very close to the Westbahnhof train station. This is an amazing place, run by two wonderful people – Erin and Walter Ruthensteiner. They were backpacking around the world and had already opened their hostel long before many of us were born. They do it right, and somehow just keep on improving every year. 52
The hostel has a great courtyard, roof terraces with grass, musical instruments scattered around for anyone to use, a bar, and even a stack of small safes by reception. Each safe has plugs inside for leaving and recharging your phone, tablet, etc. in safety. They’ve also changed all the windows to more modern energy-efficient ones, and added thick insulation around the outside of the building. Erin and Walter are so full of positive energy and life, it makes me wonder what it would be like to be surrounded by such people every day. We grabbed dinner at the nearby Mozart Schnitzel, a traditional

– Vienna domestic beer was a bit much. The next morning we checked out the Vienna Explorer office around the corner where Adam, a friend, rents bikes and takes people on his famous Grape Grazing Tour. Bikes are waiting for you at the vineyards and wine cellars of Wachau Valley just outside Vienna – just hop off the train and hop on your bike to explore the area’s wines. While Ben had a meeting I met friend and poet extraordinaire Neil McCarthy for coffee, and then a yummy falafel at the Naschmarkt open market where I also did some food shopping (aged goat cheese, black olives, satay sauce). During the early 1990s I worked for Austria’s largest
environmental organisation, Global 2000. I used to nip into this market just before making a return visit to Budapest, grabbing fresh basil, pine nuts and parmesan to make a delicious pesto once there.

Traincations Whether by high-speed train or traditional steam engine, travelling by rail is the ultimate backpacker experience. Eurostar gets you across the Channel to Paris or Brussels, and from there, the world is your oyster. Trains between France and Spain are modern and quick. Journey around Eastern Europe and step back in time to an era of old-fashioned sleeper carriages many equipped with bunk beds, heaters and sinks. If you somehow manage a win on Euro Lotto, take a trip on the Venice-Simplon Orient 56
Express. This luxury train commutes from London to Venice (not to be confused with the Orient Express that ran from 1883 to 2009!). Just as Europe is comprised of hundreds of different cultures all squashed into a small area, trains reflect the country they’re in. Whizz through Greece, chug slowly through Hungary, meet gypsies in Romania and mingle with the locals in Germany… bon voyage!
