Notre-Dame reopens
After being closed since 2019 due to a fire and undergoing an estimated $767 million in repairs by skilled craftspeople from around the world, Notre-Dame, one of the most recognisable landmarks in Paris, welcomed visitors once again in December. Officials say they expect over 15 million people through the cathedral doors in the first year of reopening. In an effort to streamline the expected surge, the cathedral is developing an online booking site where visitors can register a time slot. Walk-in visitors will also be allowed, but long lines are expected. “During the first six months, until Pentecost 2025 (June 8), access will be restricted to individual visitors and worshippers, with group visits allowed only after this period,” the Cathedral website said.
GDS names this Finnish city the world’s most sustainable destination
For the first time ever, Helsinki, the Finnish capital, was named the world’s most sustainable destination in 2024, edging out 2023’s winner, Gothenburg in Sweden, by less than three points. Compiled by the Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDS-Index), the ranking revealed that 88% of Helsinki’s hotel rooms and 100% of its venues have received third-party sustainability certifications. Additionally, 51% of Helsinki’s electricity comes from renewable sources, and 49% of its waste is recycled. Neighbouring Nordic cities make up the top five: Gothenburg, Copenhagen, Bergen, and Aarhus, while Sydney ranked number 10.
The world’s first luxury theme park set to open in Mexico
Located on more than 150 acres at VidantaWorld Nuevo Vallarta, Grupo Vidanta and VidantaWorld announced a new $1.3 billion luxury theme park project, scheduled to open in 2026. The Mexican theme park will offer 23 attractions, 25 restaurants and lounges, 16 retail shops and kiosks, luxury resort hotels, and of course, plenty of thrilling rides. Grupo Vidanta is teaming up with Cirque du Soleil and cutting-edge ride manufacturers to create the rides, including the Tecuani Beast—Latin America's only double launch coaster—Beat It, Ashara: Goddess of Fire, and SOL: Speed of Light. The park will also include LUDO, a water-themed dinner show by Cirque du Soleil and is scheduled to open in November 2025.
Move over Japan, Aussies will be travelling to another Asian hot spot in 2025
Travel comparison website, Skyscanner, has revealed its Travel Trends 2025 report and some surprising findings for Aussie travellers. The always popular Japan won’t be the number one destination for 2025. Instead, Aussies will be travelling to Siem Reap in Cambodia, home to the famous Angkor Wat temple, with interest increasing by a whopping 529%. Krabi in Thailand took the second spot, with Busuanga in the Philippines coming in third place, Daegu in South Korea, and Rovaniemi in Finland emerging as the fifth trending spot. Rounding out the top ten were Cusco in Peru, Tromsø in Norway, Almaty in Kazakhstan, and Labuan Bajo and Yogyakarta in Indonesia. We’re most excited to see Almaty in the top 10, as we recently launched our newest tour, 22 Day Five Stans Unveiled. Check out our tour here.

Heading to India? Here's how to prepare for your adventure
Know the weather
India is a vast country and the climate differs from region to region: the north of the country experiences temperatures of 40 degrees and above, but temperatures dip from November onwards with the cold setting in during the months of December to February. The heat turns up again in March, although you will still need some warm clothes if you are travelling to Delhi and Rajasthan. Summer returns in April, May and most of June; mid-June to mid-September the monsoon season arrives. October marks the end of the rain and once again the country heats up again.
Know the culture
While it can be said that Indian culture is fairly conservative, there is flexibility depending on where you’re touring and what you’re doing. In places of worship, legs, shoulders, and at times your head, will need to be covered. As a foreign visitor, there are no real expectations of you, and locals are accustomed to seeing tourists wearing shorts, skirts and sleeveless tops. On an evening out, anything goes so dress as you would back home. If you are headed to a bar or restaurant a more formal look is expected in some establishments, especially for men. It's best to take note of the dress code which usually doesn't allow sandals, flip flops, or trainers.
PACKING CHECK LIST
Light, cotton clothing: multiply the number of days you are travelling by two and you should be golden!
Mosquito repellent: a reliable repellent for the tropics is best. You'll need it all day, especially at sundown.
Shoes: comfortable and worn-in (not brand new) walking shoes or trainers for day excursions, a pair of neutral evening shoes, and flip flops for the beach or pool days.
Basic toiletries: toothpaste, toothbrush, and moisturiser. Wet wipes, pocket tissues and hand sanitizer are good options to keep with you at all times. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a cap are mandatory in this part of the world.
Scarf: needed to enter most religious places and also handy if the coach air-con is too cool.
First Aid Kit: it's always best to carry a few Band-Aids, Panadol and other OTC meds you prefer to alternatives in India.
Adaptors & phone: India commonly uses round two or three-pronged sockets.
Buying a SIM card in India can be tedious so if you plan on staying connected while travelling, sort out the roaming before you depart.

A visit to South America
Angela shares her experience on our 19 Day Inspiring South America Small Group tour
What prompted you to book your tour?
My brother and his wife found this tour and were planning on booking. Machu Picchu has been on my bucket list since I was young. I'm usually a big planner, however the timing and price were right so my sister and I decided to embrace the opportunity and join them with four months to go before departure!
Did your expectations meet reality?
I was a little unsure about what to expect. I had never travelled like this before with so many internal flights, however I was not disappointed. The guides met us at each airport, and were there to answer and assist us even on our free days—they exceeded expectations. Eduardo, our awesome guide who helped us retrieve our lost shoes after we left at IguazúFalls, to Maira who took us to do laundry in Rio. Not only were the guides great, but the location of the hotels were, too. Our Buenos Aires accommodation was central and our room in Rio had beautiful views of the beach and Christ the Redeemer.
What were the highlights of this tour for you?
Machu Picchu was the draw card for this trip, however I was surprised it was not my highlight. Experiencing Halloween in Puno was incredible, along with the Uros floating island. I really enjoyed learning about their fascinating culture and meeting friendly locals.
Any surprises?
Being vegetarian I was worried about the food, but I had no problems. In the Amazon everyone else was envious as my food looked better than theirs, and there were ample options for me at the Brazilian BBQ. An unwanted surprise was that my sister, brother and two others from the group had lost luggage, however our guide Carlitos worked diligently and had it sent to us.
Did you do any optional tours?
We did the Gran Aventura boat ride at Iguazú Falls, which I highly recommend. We also visited the Ollantaytambo site—it’s not a tour, just pay the entrance fee and then you hike/explore your own way to the top.
What do you say to those pondering whether or not to book?
If you are unsure about this tour or have not heard of Inspiring Vacations and are hesitant to book, I would say this tour will not disappoint. It was well-organised with fantastic, friendly and knowledgeable guides. Eduardo was fantastic in Iguazú, smiley Gladys was great in Peru, Carlitos in Machu Picchu, and I can't forget Jordie and Gilbert, two fantastic guides in the Amazon.
Do you have any other tips?
Join the Inspiring Vacations Facebook group before you travel. Past travellers post helpful tips and photos. It helped me a lot in organising pre-and post-tour activities, as well as getting information on flights, vaccinations, money cards, wifi needs and packing tips. Creating a WhatsApp group is also an easy way to share group photos. Our group became handy on the free days when we wanted to meet up or do things together.

T ế t, T ế t, Hooray!
Vietnamese New Year is a chance to explore seasonal cuisine and immerse yourself in local culture
Not to be confused with Chinese New Year, Tết is short for Tết Nguyên Đán and is a Vietnamese celebration that celebrates both the arrival of spring and Vietnamese New Year. This year, Tết falls on January 29.
Tết begins with a bang—literally. Fireworks displays are popular during the festival and light up the night sky, particularly in the capital, Hanoi. Fortunately, there are only a small number of Tết superstitions for foreigners to be aware of—spring cleaning is to be done before the festivities begin, and people tend to avoid wearing black. Like Chinese New Year, the colour red dominates the celebratory decorations, as it embodies good fortune and vibrancy for the new year. You may see children and elderly relatives being handed li xi (lucky money)—red envelopes with money in them.
INSPIRED TO EXPERIENCE TẾT? Check out our tours to Vietnam here
If you’re travelling to Vietnam during Tết—what a colourful treat!—but prepare for far longer delays than usual. Like any national holiday that sees much of the population travel cross country and expats return from abroad, expect flights, taxis and trains to be booked up well in advance. Major cities such as Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi will be particularly congested.
On the first day of the Lunar New Year, a hush typically falls upon the country. The atmosphere is similar to Christmas Day, with empty streets in the morning and many shops closed. Nowadays, more people are out and about, but the major cities are still much quieter than usual. Tết is a wonderful time to visit Vietnam, just be mindful of delays while travelling and you’ll enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
WAYS TO EXPLORE Australia's Top End
Australia’s Top End, from the capital Darwin, across to Kakadu National Park and down to the Katherine area, is a land of unspoiled natural beauty waiting to be explored
WORDS BY EMMA CALLEY
Australia’s Northern Territory (NT) is simply enormous. While it may look modest on a map, the NT is almost six times the size of the United Kingdom, and were it considered an independent country, it would be the 20th largest! Traverse this monster section of Australia and you’ll cross from a tropical climate to dry, semi-arid desert. Along the way, you’ll pass through countless towns, sacred Aboriginal land, and thousands of kilometres of red terra firma.
The Northern Territory’s relative remoteness also allows it a degree of exclusivity—only those who journey across Australia can experience its beauty. In other parts of the world, places as stunning as Kakadu National Park would be flooded with tourists, but in the NT, they’re peaceful havens where visitors can connect with nature and bask in the serenity.
Here, five different ways to explore Australia’s Top End.
BY BOAT
Life in the Top End revolves around water. Its capital is bound by it, dozens of lakes and rivers wind through it and one of the territory’s most spiritual spots, Arnhem Land, is known for its spectacular coastline. What better way to take in the NT’s best sights than by boat?
Those seeking an adrenaline rush should take a boat trip down the Adelaide River. While its surroundings paint a pretty picture, the river’s inhabitants are anything but. The Adelaide River is infamous for its high concentration of saltwater crocodiles—the world’s largest living reptiles—as well as smaller freshwater crocs, flying foxes and bull sharks. Adelaide River Cruises are a family-run tour company in the NT passionate about the local wildlife. Hop on one of their Jumping Crocodile Cruises and get up-close with the ancient creatures as they leap from the water for food.
If close wildlife encounters aren’t your idea of fun, head out on Darwin Harbour for a sunset cruise, complete with dinner and champagne. Sail Darwin has you covered on all fronts, with their 50ft luxury catamaran and seasonal tapasstyle menu.
BY TRAIN
When it comes to epic train journeys, few compare to the mighty Ghan, which runs a staggering 2979 km from Adelaide, through the rugged MacDonnell Ranges and lush Katherine area to Darwin. Named for the first Afghan cameleers that came to Australia in the 19th century, this treasured train has a fascinating history. It was used to transport army servicemen in World War II and later, to move supplies through the outback to build crucial infrastructure. In 2019, The Ghan celebrated 90 years of operation and a ride on the luxury locomotive is still as spectacular as ever.
Zigzagging through the centre of the continent, The Ghan showcases remote Australian landscapes otherwise inaccessible to most travellers. From the supreme comfort of your private cabin or in one of three dining carriages, enjoy the colours of the Australian outback whiz by, from dusty ochres to native greens, set against a vibrant blue sky.
BY HELICOPTER
Some of the NT’s most remarkable landscapes are far too grand to appreciate from the ground; places like Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) and the Kings Canyon should be admired from above. A helicopter ride provides panoramic views of the Northern Territory and natural sights otherwise unreachable by road or rail, as well as aerial perspectives of well-known attractions like Uluru.
Prepare to be blown away by the immensity of nature as you take in some of Australia’s most beautiful landscapes.
For sky-high views of Nitmiluk and other NT highlights, jump on one of HeliSpirit’s helicopter tours, ranging from 8-45 minutes, or consider a scenic trip over Uluru and Kata Tjuta with Ayers Rock Helicopters. Keen fishermen and wannabe anglers can even book a day of heli-fishing with Remote Adventures NT and visit secret fishing spots brimming with the Territory’s greatest catches, from barramundi to mangrove jack.
PREVIOUS PAGE: The Kings Canyon; ABOVE: The Ghan passing through Alice Springs (PHOTO: Journey Beyond); RIGHT: Boating on the Katherine River; TOP RIGHT: Uluru at Kata Tjuta National Park; FAR RIGHT: Wide open roads in NT
BY SWIMMING
One of the best ways to cool down in the Top End is with a dip, and while you can swim at a few of Darwin’s patrolled beaches, there’s always a lingering risk of crocodiles. But what the NT lacks in the reptile-free coastline, it certainly makes up for in pristine watering holes. Wander through the Territory’s remote bushland and you may come across one of these hidden gems, where rocky terrain gives way to thundering falls and water sparkles turquoise against the red rock. Natural swimming pools like Jim Jim Falls and Gunlom contrast spectacularly against the NT’s otherworldly landscape and are a sublime way to relax on your Top End adventure.
Most watering holes are open to the public, however, a guided tour is advisable to ensure the spot you choose is safe for swimming and croc-free. Litchfield National Park is full of idyllic swimming holes; explore with Offroad Dreaming to see highlights like Wangi Falls and hear about the region’s history along the way.
If you do decide to go it alone, obey signage and stick to designated crocodile-free areas.

ON FOOT
Pack your hiking boots, because the Top End is bursting with bushwalking trails and as any nature lover will agree, there’s no better way to get to know a landscape than to explore it on foot. The NT is the Australian outback at its most unspoiled; take a leisurely stroll through a national park, or head deeper into the dense desert scrub on a longer hike. Wherever you go, you’re bound to discover a few of nature’s greatest hits.
The NT’s most famous walking route is undoubtedly the trail around Uluru. Running for around 10km, this loop is much more than a close encounter with the sacred site. Engage a local guide or tour with a group like SEIT Outback Australia to learn about the history and significance of the area, listen to Dreamtime stories and stop at stunning photo spots along the way. Those with a high level of fitness should consider tackling one of the world’s great bushwalks: the Larapinta Trail. Whether you choose to hike on your own or on a guided tour, be respectful of the land, and mindful of your behaviour along the way.

1. ROME, ITALY
With an astounding 60 UNESCO World Heritage Sites—more than any other country in the world—it’s little wonder this Mediterranean gem is one of the most visited nations and la dolce vita continues in 2025. The capital, Rome (with 13 UNESCO sites), is set to shine in 2025 with the city celebrating the Jubilee. The once-in-a-quartercentury event brings grand religious and cultural festivities, including masses at St. Peter’s Basilica and pilgrimages to significant churches throughout Italy. WANT TO SEE THE SHOW? Click here
Twenty years ago, Amanda Lea Lavergne bought a oneway ticket from Texas to New York City—and she’s never looked back. Since then, she’s graced the stages of some of Broadway’s finest theatres, performing in Grease and the 35th Anniversary production of Annie. This March, Amanda will reprise her role as Grace in Annie for Australian audiences, alongside theatre darling Anthony Warlow, who stars as Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks. Amanda made her Australian theatrical debut in 2019 as Lisa in Jekyll & Hyde in Concert, and she’s excited to return to this beloved musical. We sat down with Amanda in between rehearsals to chat all things Annie, how to see NYC like a local, and where she’s heading next on holiday.
Congratulations on your role of Grace in Annie and welcome back to the Australian stage. What are you most looking forward to?
Thank you very much! I am most looking forward to getting to learn the ins and outs of Australian theatre and discovering its audiences. This will be my first long running production here. I am excited to bring my history with the show to the table while also soaking up all the Australian theatre community has to offer.
How do you feel about reprising your role of Grace— what do you love about her and how are you preparing for the role this time round?
I have been given time to do more research into who Grace is. Things as simple as where was she born and where did she grow up? Where did she go to school? Access to women’s education was much more limited in the early 1900s so how was she able to make that happen? I think there is something so beautiful and empowering about her in that she can manage all of Mr. Warbucks’s agenda while also being a soft landing place for Annie.
This show is iconic—what can Australian audiences expect?
The audience can expect the magic of live theatre told through a child’s soul. It will be a mix of veterans who will bring their breadth of experience and newcomers who will inevitably bring their sense of curiosity and joy. My wish is that everyone who sees it leaves with a bit more hope in possibilities than they walked in with.
You’ve been based in NYC for a long time, is it safe to call you a local? Describe your perfect day in New York It's been 20 years since I bought my one way ticket from Texas, and while at times it is a tough city to love, it has my heart; I love that I can call it home. A perfect day is definitely going to start with a run in Central Park, then my husband and I love to pick a neighbourhood to explore. It doesn’t matter how many times we have strolled the streets of Little Italy, the Village or the Upper West Side, we tend to find some new vintage or antique shop, a new bookshop or cafe/restaurant which then becomes a new haunt for us. Finish up the day checking out the latest Broadway play or musical then a nightcap at the Algonquin on West 44th.
Where are you headed on your next holiday and why?
My husband and I have yet to take our honeymoon, so after Annie, we are hoping to finally do our dream European escape and live like the locals.
Once-in-a-lifetime bucket list destination and why?
The South of France! I always knew my family’s origins were French, but after many long nights on ancestry.com I discovered just how deep the roots travel. To be able to go and truly spend time there would be an absolute window to my personal history and such a gift.
