FROM THE CEO
WELCOME Welcome to the January/ February issue of Inspiring Vacations magazine. We have some exciting plans for 2024, including the relaunch of our first post-pandemic tours to China. Departing in March, we couldn’t be more excited to see the return of this popular destination. With its myriad of ancient sights, cultural delights and breathtaking scenery, China should be on every bucket list. This issue, our first for the new year, we visit some amazing destinations—in fact, 24 of them! In this issue’s bumper cover story we explore 24 inspiring places to visit in 2024. Whether it’s visiting Paris during the XXXIII Olympic Summer Games in July, or basking in sun-drenched Spain
(which nabbed the top spot on Lonely Planet’s 2024 sustainable travel list), there will be at least one (or 24) worthy destinations to add to your bucket list—why not let us help you get there? We love seeing your on-tour photos. Turn to page 3 for instructions on how to share your photos. Having a David Attenborough moment at the Minneriya National Park, Sri Lanka. Apart from a kaleidoscope of birds, deer, monkeys and more, encountering dozens of elephants within a couple of metres from us was just one of many inspiring experiences on our tour
After a 2km walk through soaring cliffs of amazing coloured sands, the visitor is greeted with the splendid sight of the Treasury Building in Petra, Jordan. I have been waiting for this moment for so long and the opportunity to hop on a camel to create an iconic photo is too hard to resist. Petra was truly a mind blowing experience, everyone should visit!

See the Northern Lights from home If you’re not chasing the Northern Lights in person this season, various webcams have been set up in Alaska, Canada, Norway, Sweden and Finland. Although watching through a screen is by no means a substitute for the real thing, it does provide ample inspiration until you book a tour. Grab a hot chocolate and look up our favourite picks and watch for free: ski resort Banff Sunshine Village will live stream 24-hours a day, as will the Geospace Observatory at Canada’s Athabasca University; The University of Alaska in Fairbanks (also home to the Geophysical Institute) will run a 360-degree camera and in Norway, tune into glass igloo hotel, Lyngen North.
UNESCO releases new list of World Heritage Sites In 2023, UNESCO added 42 new sites to their World Heritage list. Among the newly inscribed are an archaeological cemetery site in South Korea, a Viking Age fortress in Denmark, and a Silk Road corridor in Uzbekistan. Past additions include Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, The Great Wall of China, the Pantheon, the Vatican City. To be considered for UNESCO status, sites must be of “outstanding universal value” and meet at least one of the 10 selection criteria, ranging from representing “a masterpiece of human creative genius” to being “directly or tangibly associated with events or living traditions, with ideas, or with beliefs, with artistic and literary works of outstanding universal significance.”
Fotografiska’s Newest Space The fourth outlet of the celebrated photography museum, Fotografiska, has opened in a historic alternative art space in Berlin. Known for showcasing emerging artists and big-name talent like Andy Warhol and Annie Leibovitz, the six-story 1908 building includes bars, a fine-dining restaurant, a café, a stage with a dance floor, several lounge areas, in addition to its exhibition space. In the future, the space will also host poetry readings, artist talks, performances and other events. INSPIRINGVACATIONS.COM 5

INSPIRED TO VISIT CHINA? Check out our tours here
As we relaunch tours to China from March, we take a closer look at one of the world’s greatest archeological discoveries of all time
the same imperial status and power in death that he enjoyed in life. It’s estimated that the tomb took almost forty years and 700,000 people to construct. Although the site is open to the public, it's important to note that it is an active dig site; archaeologists believe there are an additional 6,000 figures yet to be uncovered.
In 1974, Chinese farmers were digging a well when they encountered a life-sized soldier made of clay. Confused and intrigued, they reported their findings to the government who promptly sent scientists to the site in Xi'an to begin further excavations. Unbeknownst to the farmers, this solitary figure was part of an entire army of life-size soldiers, horses and chariots. The remarkable discovery of the Terracotta Army is still considered one of the biggest in archeological history. It’s thought that the army was constructed to guard the tomb of Emperor Qin in the afterlife, and to ensure he would have
The rows and rows of warriors are a phenomenal sight to behold, especially when you consider that each figure was created by hand without the use of tools. Take a closer look and you’ll notice that no two soldiers are alike—each terracotta figure has been moulded with intricate details like facial expressions, hairstyles, and gestures. This, in addition to their organisation by military rank, suggests that the figures were modelled after real people. In addition to the nearly 2,000 soldiers, archaeologists discovered chariots, cavalry and weapons, which are also on display across the three pits. INSPIRINGVACATIONS.COM 7

JULY 26 – AUGUST 11 After a century of waiting, the City of Light will host the summer Olympic Games and Paralympic Games this July. Iconic venues will play their part with the Seine at centre stage for the opening ceremony, beach volleyball by the Eiffel Tower, fencing and taekwondo under the glass roof of the Grand Palais, and the park at the Palace of Versailles will welcome equestrian events.
1. AUSTRALIAN OPEN (MELBOURNE)
JANUARY 14–28 The summer of tennis reaches a crescendo in Melbourne this January at the Australian Open. Despite the regular heat waves during the event, thousands head to Melbourne Park to watch the superstars of tennis battle it out at the only Grand Slam tournament in the Southern Hemisphere.
4. PRESIDENTS CUP (MONTREAL)
SEPTEMBER 24–29 The Presidents Cup is a biennial five-day golf event played between teams The USA and International (but excludes European countries). This year’s competition will be held at the Royal Montreal Golf Club for the second time. The Cup is probably the most unique golf tournament in the world: there is no prize money awarded to winners, instead funds go to charity, and since its inception in 1994, more than $56.4 million has been donated to charities all over the world.
5. AMERICA’S CUP (BARCELONA) 2. SIX NATIONS (UK, IRELAND, FRANCE, ITALY)
FEBRUARY 2 – MARCH 16 The best rugby nations in Europe—England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Italy and France—will battle it out over five weeks. The Guinness Six Nations Grand Slam 2023 holders, Ireland, will be hoping to retain their crown this year when the tournament kicks off in Marseille on February 2.
AUGUST 2 – OCTOBER 20 Dating back to 1851, the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup will take place this year (for the first time) in Barcelona. The teams’ bases will be located within the Port Vell area and the Village will accommodate tens of thousands of spectators every day. The course will be set in front of fan zones, beach viewing platforms and a hospitality area, with the City of Counts providing the perfect backdrop for this spectacular event. INSPIRED TO VISIT ITALY? Check out our tours here
A visit to Italy Kerry and Michael reflect on our 10 Day Best of Italy and Sorrentine Coast tour What prompted you to book this tour? We were looking for a land tour which would take us around some of the best of Italy at the end of our European holiday. We only had 10 days and this tour itinerary suited us perfectly. We also liked that it was with an Australian company. Did your expectations meet reality? Mostly yes, in some ways no. The Tuscan countryside we travelled through was as beautiful as expected, but some places such as Venice and Capri were overcrowded which made the experience not as enjoyable as we’d hoped.
INTERVIEW BY VANESS A MULQUINEY
Any surprises? Rome was chaotic and wonderful all at once, and some of our tours were very crowded, such as the Vatican Museums but there’s so much history and the ruins are cleverly interwoven into the life and design of the city. We loved our stops at some of the smaller villages along the way as they were quieter, and we got to spend time just wandering the narrow streets, eating gelato, and taking in the views. What were the highlights of this tour for you? The small villages we stopped at in the Tuscany region were delightful, such as Assisi, Montepulciano, and the larger towns of Siena and Bologna. They are so beautiful, with gorgeous
cobblestone streets, quaint shops, historic churches, architecture and nice people. Our gondola ride in Venice was wonderful and definitely worth the extra cost. Other highlights include the view from our hotel in Sorrento, the extra tour to Pisa was also very good, we loved our Pompeii tour and, of course, all the gelato and pizza. What do you say to those pondering whether or not to book? If you’ve only got a short time to see some of the best of Italy, then this 10 day tour is a fabulous choice. Our local guide Stefano, and bus driver Luigi, took very good care of us, taking us to see bucket list destinations as well as to quieter, less touristy areas. We also had a good amount of free time to explore on our own, which is very important to us. We also met some lovely people touring with us, from Australia, New Zealand and Canada. We were able to take in the scenery and relax, without the hassle of trying to drive ourselves or organise other transport. Any advice for future travellers? We commenced this tour late May and had perfect weather, not too hot. This is a relatively fast-paced tour, which it needs to be in order to fit in so much of Italy in just 10 days. Comfortable footwear is a must, as is a sun hat in the warmer weather. Drink plenty of water and go to bed early; touring can be tiring but it's so worth it! Try and go with the flow, take it all in, and make some special memories. INSPIRINGVACATIONS.COM 11

HOW TO | PHOTOGRAPH TEMPLES
HOW TO...
Photograph temples Lester Ledesma is an award-winning PATA photographer and travel writer based in Singapore. Here, his tips on how to photograph temples like a pro
GET INSPIRED! SEE LESTER’S WORK HERE lesterledesma.com @skylightimages
Do you recommend purchasing a camera to use on tour? Not at all! I would even recommend using a phone for casual photographers who want to take good pictures without getting into the technical side of photography. Just use a late model smartphone, preferably one that has ultrawide, wide and telephoto lenses. If we’re relying on our iPhones, are there any ‘secret’ settings we should know about?
INTERVIEW BY VANESS A MULQUINEY. PHOTOS: L ESTER LEDES MA
Turn the flash off! That way your camera can capture all that wonderful natural light on the temple ruins. If the flash is in the ‘on’ setting, the camera will just rely on a tiny little LED bulb to illuminate the whole scene. This is a no-no especially in low-light situations, and your photos will most likely end up too dark. Also, Android users would do well to know how to work the white balance settings. As a rule of thumb—if you’re working under daylight, set the white balance to ‘sunny’ or ‘cloudy’. If you’re working with artificial light, indoors at night, for example, you can set the white balance to ‘auto’.
What are some things we should be mindful of at temples? Photography-wise, the best times to take pictures would be early in the morning and late in the day. The low sun will give a warm light and moody shadows to play with. Also, there will be fewer tourists on location. It might also be a good idea to visit during bad weather—this works really well for overly-photographed subjects like Cambodia’s Angkor Wat or Thailand’s Ayutthaya ruins. The adverse conditions can potentially give you moody and unique images. Just be sure to protect your camera (or phone) from the elements! What makes a good photo? There are three types of photos to keep in mind. Establishing shots which give a good overview of the location and the subject. For example, a mist-shrouded field of temples at dawn, silhouettes of stupas at sunset—these are like opening shots that set the scene in a movie. Medium shots are photos that tell a bit of a story about the place. Smiling vendors among ruins, or tourists gawking at the massive structures, or farmers working their field near a stunning ancient structure. Detail shots are up-close images that reveal interesting tidbits about the subject. An ornate bas relief on a temple door, a beautiful statue at a weathered altar, a wild flower growing through the crack of a crumbling wall—intimate images of details can add a profound note to your photographs. HOLIDAY AT HOME | SOUTH AUSTRALIA
t’s no secret South Australia knows wine, but wander a little off the well-worn track and you’ll be rewarded with hidden cellar doors pouring up wine in a beautiful setting. Here, our eight favourites waiting to be discovered.

1. Ten Miles East, Adelaide Hills Set your coordinates Ten Miles East and step into a storybook-perfect cellar door. Frequented by those in the know, this Adelaide Hills winery and cellar door is one of the most idyllic and undiscovered spots to drink wine in South Australia. Their vineyard footprint is small, stretching just nine acres and with six varietals grown and bottled. But with varieties like the Georgian Saperavi— one of the few grapes which has both red skin and flesh—a visit to Ten Miles East is a discovery for all senses. Surrounded by rambling, terraced gardens reminiscent of an English manor, the 100% estate grown wine is poured from a tiny 1800s stone barn. Find a spot nestled among the trees, perched lakeside or sprawled on the lawns with a BYO picnic spread and they’ll pour your wine wherever you settle.

2. Samson Tall, Fleurieu Peninsula Consider yourself a devout wine connoisseur? Add Samson Tall to your cellar-door bucket list. Not your average cellar door, Samson Tall is a boutique winery located in a picturesque McLaren Vale church dating back to 1854. Pull up a pew (literally) and let winemaker Paul Wilson pour you a few of his favourite drops or head outside to enjoy a bottle of heaven-sent grenache-mataro rosé on the deck. There’s a piano waiting to be played, lush lawns primed for picnics, and a resident winery dog, Miller, in need of pats (your pup is welcome, too). Don’t miss the historic graveyard out the back.

3. David Franz, Barossa The son of Peter Lehman, David Franz, has forged his own path in the wine world with his exciting take on Barossa wine culture. Combining old school methods with innovative and creative thinking, David Franz wines will redefine your expectations of the Barossa region. With a cellar door in an original 1860’s cottage, discover their wonderful wines and perhaps one of the best views the Barossa has to offer.
4. CRFT, Adelaide Hills Perched in one of the highest altitude grape growing regions in the country lies a lesser-known hero of the Adelaide Hills. CRFT is a certified organic label run by wine young-guns Candice Helbig and Frewin Ries, who collectively have 48 vintages under their belt. Set to the backdrop of the Mount Lofty Ranges, the unique Piccadilly micro-climate allows wine to be produced with minimal intervention. Bountiful rainfall means the vineyards are unirrigated and native ducks, rather than pesticides, keep insects under control. Here, grape growing conditions are likened to those of the Champagne wine region in France and are among the coldest, wettest and most elevated in Australia. The result is relatively low cropping but quality yields which are used to create 13 singlevineyard wines. Best sipped metres from the vines on which they were grown, CRFT’s cellar door is a converted barn cradled by vineyards.
5. Kimbolton, Langhorne Creek Kitted-out industrial shipping containers designed by renowned architect Damian Chwalisz create the perfect secret spot to while away an afternoon at Kimbolton Wines. Take a bottle of Montepulciano Rosé (crisp, fresh and dry) to the rooftop deck and soak in views across Langhorne Creek’s vineyards or head to the lawns with a regionally-inspired platter playing lawn games below.
6. The Blok, Coonawarra Take the road less travelled and unearth the world-class wine region that is Coonawarra. Nestled in the heart of the Limestone Coast of South Australia, Coonawarra is home to a number of welcoming cellar doors, such as the The Blok—a quaint cellar door taking residence in an old homestead. Serving traditional varietals from sparkling pinot chardonnay to a selection of reds, this delightful and small family-owned cellar door is worth the visit.

7. The Joinery Wine Room, Port Elliot
Journey south of Adelaide to the idyllic seaside town of Port Elliot—home to postcard-worthy beaches and the Joinery Wine Room. A cellar door serving Charlotte Dalton Wines and Cooke Brothers Wines is the perfect spot to relax with a glass or bottle while grazing on a platter of local produce. Stay for a while or stop by to pick up some wines to go—this cellar door won’t stay hidden for long.
8. Between the Vines, Adelaide Hills
Hidden at the bottom of a lush valley, Between the Vines is as much a secret garden as a vineyard. Descend down the tree-lined driveway to the family-run cellar door, where a charming Tuscanstyle tasting room sits on the edge of the fiveacre vineyard. Framed by hills festooned with vines, private alfresco nooks are tucked all around the cottage-style garden and vineyard, while panoramic views await on the rooftop deck. Inside, there are countless cosy corners to sip wine paired with a local cheese platter. You’ll find Between the Vines on the edge of the leafy hamlet of Stirling in the Adelaide Hills.

2. NEW ZEALAND
W
hether you’re looking to connect with nature in Norway, tick off Italy’s 59 UNESCO sites, catch a new Olympic sport in Paris, or bask in the Final Frontier, Inspiring Vacations’ magazine travel experts round up the 24 destinations (in no particular order) that need to be on your travel bucket list. Here’s to a year filled with inspiring travel and joy-inducing moments.
1. AUSTRALIA Few countries are as culturally rich or geographically blessed as the Land Down Under. If 2024 is the year for your Australian adventure (or if this is home and you’re wondering where to explore next), South Australia’s Kangaroo Island has just nabbed the number two spot in Lonely Planet’s 2024 Top Regions Hotlist, ahead of Tuscany at number three. Still recovering from the bushfires in 2000, Kangaroo Island was chosen because of its ecotourism efforts, abundant local produce and native wildlife, and this being Australia, home to some of the nation’s most pristine beaches. Post-fires, the highly anticipated reopening of sustainable luxury hotel, Southern Ocean Lodge took place in December. Later this year, its neighbour, The Cliffs Kangaroo Island golf course will be unveiled. Set atop 500-millionyear-old cliffs with unobstructed views across the ocean, this new addition will position Kangaroo Island as one of the world’s best golf destinations. If golf isn’t your activity of choice, Australia is the adventure playground you imagine it to be and more; there’s plenty on offer, especially for those inspired travellers who live to venture off the beaten path. One thing is for certain: your first trip around Australia won’t be your last.
New Zealand is no stranger to the spotlight. Many dream of touring the dramatic landscapes of this Oceanic nation, from glacier-carved fjords to rugged mountain ranges and brilliant blue lakes. In the Land of the Long White Cloud, natural beauty thrives and cities, while cosmopolitan, harmonise with the surrounding scenery. The country's two islands offer distinct experiences, with the north hosting Auckland and the capital Wellington, and the south home to adventure hub Queenstown—birthplace of the bungee. In 2024, this far-flung beauty is worth ticking off your bucket list: nothing beats escaping a Northern Hemisphere winter for sunshine, but you’ll be rewarded no matter when the visit: autumn means harvest season and beautiful colours, snow-capped adventures and spectacular stargazing is on the menu for winter, and spring equals hiking and fishing. No matter where your New Zealand journey takes you, be sure to learn about the Māoritanga (Māori culture) and heritage along the way.

4. INDIA
3. SOUTH KOREA South Korea’s image as a thriving tech haven isn't wrong but there’s so much more on offer. And those in-the-know have noticed: South Korea is attracting more visitors than ever before. Its fast-paced streets are seeped in 5,000 years of culture and intricate history, while over 80% of its geography is mountainous, making it a dynamic destination for hikers. Even within the bustling modern capital of Seoul, there's history to be found at every turn: ultra-modern skyscrapers, lively markets and traditional Buddhist temples. For a taste of the traditional side, head to UNESCO-listed Andong Hahoe village, or jump across the Korea Strait and you’ll land on Jeju-do, South Korea’s answer to Hawaii. Set to open in late 2024, the Seoul Robot and AI Museum will showcase science and technology through interactive exhibits featuring artificial intelligence and virtual reality. Robots used in the museum's construction will participate in day-to-day operations, such as leading tours and guiding visitors through exhibits, while renovations at the Busan Museum of Art begin this year and will reopen with more of a focus on high-tech features like evolving 3D projections.

A land of vibrance and colour, of rich heritage and unexpected delights, India is a feast (and occasionally a full-frontal assault) for the senses. Step off the plane and prepare for a sensory overload: blaring car horns, lively markets, and aromatic spices that tickle your nose. Between its delicious cuisine, varying by region and season, and it's phenomenal ancient structures—the Taj Mahal and the Amer Fort to name just two— India offers something for every inspired traveller. And whether you dream of wandering the pink streets of Jaipur or watching a sunrise wash over the Ganges in sacred Varanasi, India will grip you with full force and refuse to let go.

5. SRI LANKA Long overlooked in favour of colourful India and beachy southeast Asia, Sri Lanka is finally getting the attention it deserves. Despite its small size, it has all the hallmarks of a traveller’s paradise: exquisite cuisine, world-class beaches and national parks as animal-rich as any in Africa. Word of its charm is spreading as fast as the country continues to evolve, so 2024 is the perfect time to explore. The island’s compact size makes Sri Lanka an ideal destination, especially for travellers who enjoy a bit of adventure. The Pekoe Trail is a new 300 km-long network of hiking routes which snakes its way through the highlands. It’s made up of 22 stages which can be completed in short sections or as part of a multi-day experience taking you through an eclectic mix of hilltowns, tea plantations, remote villages, sanctuaries, viewpoints and adventurers of all ages should add it to their hit list.
6. CAMBODIA The small country of Cambodia is jam-packed with heritage, culture and beautiful landscapes. Relics of this resilient nation’s chequered history abound, from remnants of French colonial rule, ruins of glorious ancient kingdoms and sombre monuments paying tribute to the suffering inflicted by the reign of Khmer Rouge in the 1970s. If a visit to the magnificent temple complex of Angkor Wat gives off an Indiana Jones vibe, you’re not far off: Ta Prohm was the filming location for the 2001 movie, Tomb Raider. Outside of the nation’s renowned ancient treasure, there’s much to please the curious traveller: beautiful beaches and islands, lush jungles, welcoming locals and delectable local cuisine.

7. CHINA Inspiring Vacations’ first post-pandemic tours to China will depart in February and we couldn’t be more excited to see this powerhouse return! With its myriad of ancient sights, cultural delights and breathtaking scenery, China should be on every bucket list. Whether you’re wandering the ancient hutongs of Beijing or walking down the Bund in Shanghai, China balances tradition and modernity perfectly. And if you’re craving a glimpse of the Middle Kingdom’s natural beauty—or wondering if it even exists—you’re in for a treat. From the lush mountain ranges of central China, to the desert dunes of the north and the tropical beaches in the south, China truly ticks every box. If your tour includes a stop in Hong Kong, this island knows how to embrace both traditional culture and western influence, be it in the architecture, attitude or cuisine. Four new restaurants were added to the upcoming Michelin Guide Hong Kong & Macau (taking the total to an impressive 78) and the iconic Tai Pak Floating Restaurant will reopen later this year. One thing is guaranteed: no one goes hungry on a visit to China!
8. THAILAND Beloved for its beach culture and tasty cuisine, Thailand is one of our newer destinations, but it’s long been a beloved escape for Australian tourists. This wonderfully diverse country nestled between Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, fulfils every preconception you may have: powder-white beaches, golden stupas, street carts selling tropical fruit and bustling markets. Long-boat around the eastern islands, where craggy limestone karsts jut from impossibly blue waters, or head north to Chiang Mai—former capital of the Lanna Kingdom and Thailand’s spiritual heart. From top to bottom, Thailand captures the heart of all who visit.

9. JAPAN The Land of the Rising Sun never ceases to amaze visitors but if you haven’t visited yet, don’t lose heart. Travel insiders predict that 2024 will be an ideal time time to visit for several reasons: 2023 saw three years' worth of visitors descend on the country post-pandemic, and in 2025, crowds will likely increase again thanks to Osaka hosting the World Expo from April 13. So, if you’re wanting a Japan jaunt, 2024 is the time. This geographically blessed country is spectacular year-round and easy to navigate. From sights to scenery and fivestar fare, it’s the ultimate all-rounder, especially for first-time travellers to Asia. Cherry blossom season (sakura), usually falling in March and April, is a particularly popular time to visit. If you miss the sakura season, take in the autumn foliage instead. Once September hits, the focus shifts towards tracking the progress of the leaves turning red (koyo zensen), and much like the pink blooming sakura, the timing of the autumnal colour change depends on geography and mother nature. As a general rule, the wave of colour begins in the north in Hokkaido and works its way down to Kyoto in the south from late November to early December. Regardless of the season or reason, don’t bypass Japan in 2024.
For a country not even the size of California, Vietnam has pretty much everything you could ask for when seeking out a vacation that will have you yearning to return without breaking the bank: lush green paddy fields, tropical jungle, white sandy beaches, amazing food and people. One of our newest destinations, Vietnam, will undoubtedly tick your travel boxes. Atop of any Vietnam bucket list should be a junk boat excursion on Halong Bay. Recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994, there are more than 1,900 islands creating magnificent scenery in one of the most unique ecosystems and geological formations in the world. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature enthusiast, a foodie, or an adventure seeker, Vietnam is ready to welcome you this year. 11. FRANCE France is so much more than Paris, but Paris is always a good idea and in 2024, especially for sports fans, it's a really good idea. For the first time in 100 years, Paris will host the Summer Olympic Games (July 26-August 11) and the Paralympic Games (August 28-September 8), where 15 million spectators are expected to descend on the city especially for the event. If this gives you 15 million reasons to give France a miss this year—but why you would want to skip seeing beach volleyball underneath the Eiffel Tower is beyond us—visitors will be able to reap the benefits in years to come. The capital’s council is aiming to make the city more climate-friendly with the creation of 26 km-worth of cycle paths and adapting buildings and roads—in total there are 1,700 projects. Four new sports will be debuting, too: breaking, skateboarding, surfing, sports climbing. Paris 2024 aside, France has long been the most visited destination in the world and for good reason: iconic landmarks, gourmet food and wine, world class art—the list goes on. If France isn’t on your bucket list, what are you waiting for?
12. ITALY Cobbled streets and thousand-year-old ruins at every turn, stunning coastline and mouthwatering food—there’s only one word to describe Italy: meravigliosa! Its cities sing with culture and history, boasting the world’s most famous art works by the likes of Michelangelo and Da Vinci, while its beaches stun with typical Mediterranean flair. Wander the streets of Rome with a gelato in hand and watch almost 3,000 years of history dance before your eyes, head north to Cinque Terre for colourful houses perched upon rugged hills, south to the whitewashed towns of Puglia or the turquoise beaches of Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. With an astounding 59 UNESCO World Heritage Sites— more than any other country—it’s little wonder this Mediterranean gem is one of the most visited nations in the world and la dolce vita will continue in 2024. For the first time in its 120year history, the Tour de France 2024 will start in Florence on June 29.
13. GREECE A land of ancient mythology and archaeological wonder, Greece is undoubtedly one of the most influential countries in the world. With an astoundingly long list of famous people—Homer, Aristotle and Alexander the Great, to name a few—and a profound impact on all facets of modern society, it’s clear how the country came to be known as the Cradle of Democracy. Today, Greece lures travellers with its exotic backdrops, beautiful islands, and lively culture. For foodies, Greek cuisine is a mouthwatering showcase of Mediterranean produce, while beach lovers can bathe in the Aegean’s crystalline waters and bake on its golden sand. From the streets of historic Athens to the peak of Mount Olympus and across to the white-washed buildings of Mykonos, every corner of Greece radiates charm and tradition. 14. TÜRKIYE
15. CROATIA
The sprawling nation of Türkiye is an enchanting country, stretching across two continents and has been a place of enormous historical significance, hosting groups from the Hittites to the Greeks and acting as capital of both the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. Türkiye’s buzzy capital is experiencing a resurgence of life along the Bosphorus, thanks in part to the Galataport, the world’s first underground cruise ship terminal with a pedestrian promenade. And don’t miss a visit to the plush Ciragan Palace Kempinski which was redesigned last year with Ottoman-era grandeur in mind, complete with mother-of-pearl furniture. Everywhere you look, from cosmopolitan Istanbul to the cobbled streets of Antalya’s old town Kaleiçi, you’ll see the past and present collide in a fascinating fusion like no other.
This Balkan beauty is not new to the spotlight, but behind its famous harbours and terracotta-roofed villages, Croatia’s ancient charm shines and with every visit you discover something new. While the Republic of Croatia is just a few decades old, archaeological evidence traces civilisation back to the Palaeolithic era. Despite being tossed between empires and ruled by foreign powers throughout much of its history, the country has retained its traditions and proud spirit. Croatia is well-known for its sparkling coastline, but the country is no one-trick pony, offering dramatic diversity from region to region. Tour the Dalmatian city of Dubrovnik and its iconic city walls (Game of Thrones fans rejoice), swim in the emerald lakes of Krka National Park, get lost in the AustroHungarian streets of the capital Zagreb, or eat your way across the pastoral plains of central Istria. No matter where your Croatian adventure takes you, your only regret will be not visiting sooner. 16. ICELAND
17. SWITZERLAND
From the glistening ice caves of Vatnajökull to the thundering Dettifoss Waterfall and the bubbling mud pools of the Askja Caldera, Iceland is a veritable patchwork of dramatic landscapes. This far northern country has Nordic roots, but historians believe Celts from the British Isles were among the first to arrive, back in the 7th century. Today, Icelanders are immensely proud of their island nation, its lively culture, unique tongue and quirks. And if Netflix’s Eurovision movie (The Song of the Fire Saga) was what piqued your interest in Iceland, we applaud you (and the locals are as quirky as you’d imagine). Despite being smaller than the US state of Colorado and home to less than half a million people, Iceland has a strong case for the title of world’s most scenic country. Thanks to its location in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the country is a geothermal hotspot (move over Japan) brimming with volcanoes and geysers.
Switzerland is all about dramatic mountain scapes, idyllic villages and formidable natural beauty—plus chocolate, clocks and cheese, of course. Made up of 26 different cantons (administrative region) and four official languages, the country is a stunning landlocked nation sandwiched between three glorious European neighbours: France, Italy and Germany. Its cities exude class, with clean streets and historic architecture at every turn, while its small towns are so picturesque they resemble postcards. Explore the iconic Fraumünster church on the Zürich waterfront, eat Fondue Moitié-Moitié (half Gruyère cheese, half Vacherin cheese) in alpine St. Moritz, stay in a romantic châteaux tucked into the mountains or go paragliding in Interlaken. Switzerland is ideal for adventurers and leisure travellers alike.

For lovers of nature and remarkable beauty, Norway is the ultimate destination. Tucked above Europe, this Scandinavian nation is home to scenery so magical it looks otherworldly. Watch the celestial Northern Lights dance across skies in Tromsø, wander the colourful streets of the Lofoten Islands, lead a fleet of huskies across snowy terrain and warm up with akevitt (spirit flavoured with herbs)—Norway’s national drink. Need more reasons to add Norway to your 2024 travel bucket list? Bodø, known as the gateway to the Lofoten Islands, will be a 2024 European Capital of Culture (alongside Bad Ischl in Austria and Tartu in Estonia) and if you want to chase the Northern Lights, the 2024/2025 season will be hard to beat according to the Norwegian Space Center. The cycle of solar activity—period of significant Northern Lights activity—rises and falls over a period of approximately 11 years; should averages play out as expected, the next solar maximum should occur this year. What are you waiting for?
19. ANTARCTICA Long known as the Last Frontier on Earth, Antarctica has many accolades. It’s the driest, coldest and windiest continent, it has no native population, nor countries within it, and it’s home to an astounding 90% of the world’s ice. Its most recent accolade? Named the number one adventure destination in the world by luxury travel advisor group Virtuoso. Fascinatingly, its landscape is also dotted with dozens of volcanic peaks— some of which are still active. Its wilderness at its most raw, and today, Antarctica is more accessible than ever. Navigate the Drake Passage, spot penguins, and follow in the footsteps of the world’s great explorers as you journey across glaciers and ice sheets. The great white continent is a land of wonder and unlike anywhere else on the planet.

20. ALASKA Dubbed the Final Frontier, Alaska is teeming with natural wonders, from glaciers to mountains and volcanoes and if a cruise to Alaska is on your bucket list, you’re in luck. Cruising is back in a big way, and this US gem is leading the way: experts predict 1.65 million cruise travellers will pass through the Inside Passage this year alone. Skagway, a port that’s home to White Pass and Yukon Route Railway, will unveil a new 550-foot floating pier at the beginning of the 2024 season. Although Alaska has been a part of the United States since it was sold by Russia in 1867, and a designated state since 1959, its history stretches back millennia. The best way to learn about the rich heritage and traditions of Alaska’s indigenous people is by visiting one of the state’s museums, such as the Anchorage Museum or the Alaska Native Heritage Centre, both of which are included on our Alaska itineraries.

21. CANADA Canada is one of the world’s premier destinations: endless peaks, breathtaking wilderness, and energetic cities dot the country’s colossal landscape. Each of its 10 provinces offers visitors something special: dive into the Rockies of southwestern Canada for a glimpse of rugged mountains and glacial lakes, traverse the untamed western Yukon in search of Canadian history and wildlife, head to Ontario’s roaring Niagara Falls, or go east to cosmopolitan Quebec for architecture as grand as any found in Europe. No matter where you land, you’ll be blown away by both the sights and the hospitality. Every aspect of the Great White North is bound to inspire and 2024 will follow suit.
22. SPAIN Sun-drenched Spain nabbed the top spot on Lonely Planet’s 2024 sustainable travel list thanks to its efforts in promoting yearround travel, revitalising the country’s rural areas, and the addition of new cycle paths, electric buses and train routes. A treat for the heart and mind, Spain is remarkably charismatic, unapologetically vibrant and always a good time regardless of the season. From August to October, the only place to be for sailing fans is Barcelona when the vibrant hotspot plays host to the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup. Beyond events, Barcelona is a cosmopolitan dream, alive with history and Catalonian charm. This stunning coastal spot on the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula has everything a traveller could wish for, including beaches, markets, worldclass eateries and remarkable architecture. Many flock to the city at the first sign of summer, but why wait? Barcelona offers around 300 days of sunshine every year.

23. ARGENTINA
MAKE YOUR TRAVEL DREAMS COME TRUE IN 2024 Check out our tours here
Known as the ‘Paris of South America’, a visit to the capital Buenos Aires is similar to visiting a European capital, with notable differences of course. From music to architecture, culture and food, Italy and Spain (just to name a couple) have influenced many facets of Argentine culture and turned it into a melting pot of cultures we see today. Once you’ve wined, dined and danced your way through the cosmopolitan streets of the capital, visit the thundering Iguazu Falls in the north, or head south into gaucho (cowboy) country, where grassy plains dominate the landscape. And make sure one of the world’s great natural regions, the Argentinian Patagonia, is on your list. Think: rare wildlife, cactus-covered steppes (treeless plains) and rugged glaciers. You’ll be planning your next trip before finishing your first.
24. SOUTH AFRICA South Africa is an incredibly diverse country—its landscape, people and culture are like nowhere else (and most assumptions are blown out of the water). If there is one word that sums up South Africa, it is diversity. What other country has 11 official languages, ever-changing, dramatic landscapes, and a multicultural population that draws on traditions from all over the world? With an area of 1.22 million square metres, this is a giant land of sweeping savannahs, incredible wildlife, soaring mountain ranges, rugged coastlines and bustling mega-cities. With an astounding array of biodiversity and the most mammals found in any African safari park, Kruger National Park is legendary and a must-visit.

It’s no secret that Inspiring Vacations’ staff live and breathe travel! Here, some of our team members share their 2024 travel plans…
Paul, Product Manager My travel bucket list for 2024 looks like…all things Italian! I have travelled to Europe a few times but Italy has always eluded me. My fiancé and I are going to join Inspiring Vacations’ 12 Day Deluxe Italy By Rail—the perfect trip to wine and dine our way through Italy.
Katie, Event Logistics Coordinator My travel bucket list for 2024…looks busy! Egypt, Africa, South America, Cuba, Mexico. It’s hard to narrow this list down when you work for a travel company that goes everywhere! I’m most excited about visiting South America. There are so many amazing countries and they’re all so unique. My first stop will be Machu Picchu—need I say more? The first thing I’m going to eat…is anything local! I’m a big sucker for new food experiences. I’ve also heard amazing things about Brazilian steak! My favourite Inspiring Vacations tour is…the 11 Day Traditions of Japan which I did last year and it was phenomenal. We also have some incredible South America tours that I’d love to try. My ultimate travel buddy is Patrick Dempsey—is he an option? My wish for 2024 is…adding three more countries to my tally, and to try at least five things out of my comfort zone.
I’m most excited about…the food! I love Italian cuisine (who doesn’t?) and look forward to my first meal (pasta) and spending long afternoons eating and drinking among ancient architecture—my first stop will be the Colosseum. My favourite IV tour is…Inspiring Canada & Alaska. It is the perfect introduction to the breathtaking Canadian Rockies. After exploring the Rockies, the group boards a scenic 7-night cruise through the Inside Passage to Alaska. It’s a special part of the world and a place I can’t wait to get back to. I hope 2024 is the year that…I finally visit Nepal. I’ve always wanted to be in the presence of the Himalayas and I will make it happen in 2024! By the end of 2024, I hope to have eaten my way through Italy and scaled Mount Everest! My ultimate travel buddy is…my fiancé Sasha. She is up for (almost) anything and we have travelled the world together. I look forward to many more adventures with her in the future.
GLOBETROTTER | 2024 TRAVEL
Brianna, Product Quality Manager My 2024 travel bucket list includes…New Zealand and Tasmania but I’m most excited about New Zealand. Travelling with two young kids can be tricky, so finding somewhere close to Australia that has a lot to offer everyone is important. My family and I love getting out into nature, so New Zealand would be the perfect place to explore. My first stop will be…Queenstown. From wineries, to adrenaline activities and farms, there will be plenty to keep everyone happy. I also can’t wait to go to Fergburger and order one of their famous burgers—a ‘must do’ when in Queenstown—followed by some local wine and cheese that I can enjoy once the kids are in bed! My favourite Inspiring Vacations tour is…15 Day South Island Deluxe Road Trip—an all encompassing value-formoney itinerary with some great sightseeing, and the 15 Day Private 5 Star Sri Lanka offers really great value for money and is very popular among our team and customers alike! Needless to say, my 2025 travel bucket list will include Sri Lanka! My ultimate travel buddy is…if I don’t say my husband I might get in trouble! He is a lot of fun though, and I’ve been travelling with him for years. He’s very easy going and likes going with the flow.
Jordan, Marketing Coordinator My 2024 travel bucket list includes…revisiting Korea, and hopefully Italy, Greece, Spain and Portugal. I’m most excited about visiting…Korea! I visited last year in summer, but this time I’ll be going in spring. I’ve only seen photos of Korea’s cherry blossoms, so seeing them in person is going to be great. The first place I’m going to visit is…any street market! I’m a fan of Korean fashion and the clothes are great. Followed by eating Korean fried chicken with a cold, crisp beer—what more could you want? My favourite Inspiring Vacations tour is…10 Day Premium Japan By Rail. All the boring parts are done for you (like organising rail passes), so all you have to do is show up and enjoy the beauty of Japan. The accommodation is centrally-located, the guides are great and the tour is incredibly priced. My ultimate travel buddy is…my good mate, Anthony. We’re so similar, which makes travelling together easy, and there’s also something so freeing and eye-opening about travelling solo which I also enjoy. My wish for 2024 is…cheaper airfares! I also love playing basketball so upping my average to 18 points per game would be a dream! INSPIRINGVACATIONS.COM 33

NAME COURTNEY MONSMA OCCUPATION THEATRE PERFORMER HOME TOWN GOLD COAST
Describe your perfect day in your hometown of the Gold Coast? It would start with a nice sleep in and then I would head to Talley Beach with my partner where we would grab brunch at our favourite spot. Then I’d spend most of the day swimming at the beach. To finish off the day I would love to grab dinner locally, then spend the evening with my family. Top tips for visitors to the Gold Coast? Visit the beautiful strip of Gold Coast beaches! Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is also a favourite and a great place to bring kids, and of course, the theme parks!
Almost 20 years since its premiere on Broadway, Wicked remains one of the most successful and popular musicals in the world. Winner of over 100 major awards including three Tony Awards®, Wicked is currently playing at the Sydney Lyric Theatre and will begin its Melbourne run next month.
Because my life is so hustle and bustle, I would actually love to return to New Zealand on a van trip. The sights are so beautiful and calming which is perfect for my busy lifestyle.
Courtney Monsma, who leads the stellar Australian cast as Glinda, sat down with us to chat all things Wicked, what she loves about the Gold Coast and where she’s headed next on holiday.
I desperately want to visit Bora Bora! I have some French Polynesian descent so I would love to visit the land and swim in the water.
Where are you headed on your next holiday?
What is your once-in-a-lifetime bucket list destination?
Congratulations on your role as Glinda in Wicked. Can you describe the show in four words for those unfamiliar with it? Magical, layered, thought-provoking, fun!
INTERVIEW BY: VANESS A MULQUINEY
How did you prepare for the role? I genuinely ran around a room singing Popular to train my breath! I love preparing for a role, it’s my favourite part of the process. For Glinda, I learnt the material in a neutral way and my goal was to come into the rehearsal room with an openness that would help me when being directed. I steered away from researching other productions as I knew, at the heart of it, that I had to find my own authentic Glinda. Wicked premiered in 2003 on Broadway—it’s safe to say the show is iconic! What are you most excited about for Australian audiences? I am so excited that Australia gets to see this Broadway production in their own backyard. I’m excited for the audience to come to the theatre and fall in love with the show for the first time, or the hundredth time. I’m a big fan of our Aussie production and I’m excited for the audience to see our spin on this iconic musical. INSPIRINGVACATIONS.COM 35
