WELCOME
Welcome to the September/ October issue of Inspiring Vacations magazine.
This issue, we visit beautiful South Africa and go beyond braai and safari and explore three more compelling reasons to visit: art and culture, food and wine and of course, outdoor pursuits. Product managers, Kate and Tom also offer their insider tips on visiting South Africa. Turn to page 20 for all you need to know before you visit.
And closer to home, we visit the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand’s breathtaking North Island. We list the 10 best things to do and see, from kayaking through a glow worm canyon to walking through one of the world’s last prehistoric rainforests.
For those daydreaming about their next vacation (or looking for travel inspiration), turn to page 11 to read about Kevin and Maria’s tour
to Egypt and Jordan. They had an absolute ball as you can see from their photos and they also kindly shared plenty of tips and advice for future travellers on our Inspiring Middle East Facebook group. HOW TO...
Celebrate Diwali
India’s festival of lights is not to be missed
Diwali is celebrated throughout much of India in October or November (this year, it falls on Friday November 1), with the main celebrations taking place on the darkest night of the Hindu month. The festival signals the end of the harvest season and is typically celebrated by spending time with family, attending local festivities and feasting.
From fireworks to fairgrounds and city-wide illuminations— Diwali certainly puts on a show. Downtown markets and historic buildings are given a new lease of life with elaborate decorations that light up the night sky, with theatre productions, concerts and dances all on offer, too, many of which take place in outdoor venues. In addition to fireworks, Diwali is also synonymous with firecrackers – these are let off constantly during the main celebrations, so (literally) watch your step and prepare for a noisy atmosphere in city centres.
Food and gift giving complement one another perfectly during Diwali—expect to see plenty of mithai sweets in particular. Popular ingredients include dried fruit, syrup, milk,
"It is so fun celebrating Diwali, a symbol of spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil. My family comes together with love, laughter and to seek blessings from Goddess Lakshmi."
nuts, cardamom and saffron. Also look out for dessert dishes such as the buttery fried halwa made with pumpkin or carrot. Plenty of traditional savoury dishes are also on offer, from samosas to the deep-fried pakora vegetables.
If you're travelling to India, keep in mind that in the north, Diwali is a five-day festival, while in the south, it's usually a one-day event.

GEISHA, A LIFE
by Mineko Iwasaki
When Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden was published in 1997, it quickly became the year’s must-read and the 2005 film adaptation of the same name thrust Kyoto and its stunning scenery into the spotlight. Part memoir, part history, the book sheds light on a fascinating part of Japanese culture that has historically remained in the dark.
Books to read before your trip to Japan
From travelogues and guides to non-fiction gems, here, five books to read before your trip to Japan
GHOSTS OF THE TSUNAMI
by Richard Lloyd Parry
In 2011, a devastating earthquake hit the east of Japan and triggered a tsunami that took the lives of almost 20,000 people. The combined natural events caused a nuclear meltdown and the country suffered the greatest loss of life since the bombing of Nagasaki in 1945. When the disaster unfolded, British journalist Richard Lloyd Parry was living in Tokyo. Profoundly moved by the event, Parry spent six years researching and interviewing people in the worst affected parts of Japan. Ghosts of the Tsunami is the harrowing result of his journey.
HOKKAIDO HIGHWAY BLUES
by Will Ferguson
Hokkaido Highway Blues is the lighthearted account of a gaijin (foreigner) who decides, after a few too many sakés, to hitchhike the length of the country to follow the blooming sakura (cherry blossom). Ferguson, a Canadian English teacher who lived in Japan, embarked on his unconventional journey to learn more about the culture of the country. Packed full of wit, humour and a raw sense of adventure, Hokkaido Highway Blues is a fascinating insight into the lesser-travelled roads of Japan and the notoriously private Japanese people.
A GEEK IN JAPAN
by Héctor Garcia
Whether you’re into the eccentric anime-loving side of Japan, or you’re simply interested in the culture, A Geek in Japan is the ultimate beginner’s guide to all facets of the country. Author Hector Garcia is a Spanish expat who has called Japan home for the last 14 years. While there’s an emphasis on all things high-tech, the book also covers food, festivals and more.
NORWEGIAN WOOD
by Haruki Murakami
Widely described as Japan’s most popular contemporary writer, Japanese author Haruki Murakami deserves a place on any list of books related to his home country. His novels are typically mind-bending, realitytwisting and yet, are mostly set in real-world Japan. Norwegian Wood follows protagonist Toru Watanabe and is described as a coming-of-age romance, but the captivating story deals extensively with the heavy burden of grief. It’s also one of his only titles without the magical-realism he has become known for.

A visit to Egypt & Jordan
Kevin and his partner, Maria, share their experience on our 21 Day Egypt & Jordan
Uncovered Premium Small Group Tour
What prompted you to book your tour to Egypt & Jordan?
We attended an Inspiring Vacations travel show in Auckland and we already had a degree of interest. Egypt was on my bucket list of places to see; we wanted to see the pyramids and the Valley of the Kings. I’d seen photos, they'd been featured in countless movies, and we decided—once we heard the presentation—to go on the spot!
Did your expectations meet reality?
Yes! We discovered so many things we didn’t know about the country. Personally, I thought I had to see Egypt only once but now I won’t rule out going again.
What were the highlights of this tour for you?
The pyramids didn’t fail to impress, the tour is only part of a winter getaway, but I found the Egypt portion and Petra were both full of highlights.
Any surprises?
Egypt surprised me, perhaps a bit more third world than I expected but not in a bad way. Also the food was a surprise, I seldom eat Middle Eastern cuisine but now I’m happy to eat especially the tagine! Petra was stunning, I hadn’t heard of it before, friends who had visited said it was amazing, and I was truly taken with the place.
What do you say to those pondering whether or not to book?
Do what we did: just book it! We don’t get any younger and if travelling to Egypt is on your bucket list, then do it now. We have no regrets. Join the Facebook group as previous travellers give great advice.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT VIETNAM?
Halong River Cruise
Sail through emerald waters, kayak through ancient grottos and catch some rays on white, white sands
Thousands of limestone mountains, topped with lush tropical jungle, jaggedly project out of clear, emerald waters. Halong Bay looks like the computer-generated backdrop to a James Cameron movie.
For centuries Halong bay has been a muse for poets and painters. People have flocked here to see this natural wonder and, while there might be a few more tourists and a lot more boats today, it still has retained its sense of wonder. It’s easy to spend a few days in Halong Bay watching sunsets and absorbing the 20-million-year-old karsts.
The Bay, in the Gulf of Tonkin, is very near the Chinese border and has thousands of natural caves and grottos. Sung Sot Cave is one of the biggest cave networks and the views from Pelican cave are stunning. Take a boat or, if you’re feeling brave, kayak through the Dark and Bright Cave, where you’ll dodge stalactites and hear bats preparing for the evening hunt above you. All but 40 of the islands are uninhabited and the fishing villages and farmers that do live on these isolated outcrops have hardly changed their living habits for centuries. There are plenty of opportunities to do some hill walking and cliff climbing, to get a better view of the sea-scape. The protected nearby national park of Cat Ba is home to most of the world’s remaining golden-headed langur population.
Check out our tours here
Some of northern Vietnam’s best beaches are hidden away in the regions around here. Lan Ha Bay is further away than the busy Halong Bay and is covered in white sandy beaches. As well as a great spot for diving, often seals and dolphins can be spotted here.
A boat cruise is certainly the best way to ensure you get to see all that the area has to offer and most will arrange food either on the boat or in one of the fishing villages in the area. However, if you’re feeling very James Bond (Tomorrow Never Dies was filmed here after all) then you can also see the Bay from a helicopter or seaplane.

Bay of Plenty to-do!
10 THINGS TO DO AND SEE IN THE BAY OF PLENTY
Nestled on the eastern side of New Zealand’s North Island, the Bay of Plenty has stunning beaches, a vibrant city, charming towns, and yes—plenty of activities and events. Here, ten of our favourites to get you started!
1 KAYAK THROUGH A GLOW WORM CANYON
Watch a beautiful canyon come alive with twinkling lights during an evening Waimarino Glow Worm Kayak Tour. Enjoy refreshments (included) as the sun sets, before paddling across Lake McLaren, near Tauranga. Upon arrival, the canyon is completely dark, the best way to see the glow worms to the best effect. Enjoy the birdsong and the peaceful forest surrounding this magical experience.
2 SEE THE BAY FROM ABOVE
Discover some of the best views in the Bay of Plenty on a scenic helicopter flight, an open cockpit flight or a glider flight. For the ultimate adrenaline rush, go on a skydiving adventure and take in breathtaking views of Mount Maunganui and its golden beaches expanding as far as the eye can see.
3 LEARN TO SURF OR SUP
There’s no better place to learn the basics of surfing or stand-up paddle boarding: the uncrowded beaches and gentle swells provide the perfect conditions for learner surfers. Book a lesson at one of the many surf schools dotted along the coast. Some of our favourite spots include Waihī Beach, a shoaling white sand beach which suits beginners a bit better than the more experienced. Mount Maunganui’s Main Beach is the hub of the beach culture and would be the equivalent to Oahu’s Waikiki, or Sydney’s Bondi. There are waterfront cafés, food trucks, and plenty of waves. You’ll be hanging 10 in no time!
INSPIRED TO VISIT NEW ZEALAND? Check out our tours here
MAIN: Night time glow worm kayak tour with Waimarino; TOP: Scenic flight with Frontier Helicopters; MIDDLE: Learn to surf with Hibiscus Surf School; BOTTOM: Climb to the top of Mount Maunganui
6 VIEW THE BAY’S PICTURESQUE SCENERY ON A V8 TRIKE
Go on a fun and thrilling experience exploring the beautiful Bay of Plenty on the back of a V8 Chevrolet Trike. From a bitesized 25 minute cruise to a three-hour experience, you can sit back and relax while the driver shows you all the stunning sights. This is an unforgettable sightseeing adventure for everyone!
DISCOVER THE BIG BLUE BACKYARD
Discover the Bay of Plenty’s renowned marine wildlife with Bay Explorer, Dolphin Seafaris or Orca Wild Adventures. The warm coastal waters attract large pods of dolphins between November and May. You may also see orcas, whales, sea turtles and seals. Make the most of your day on the water with a kayak, stand-up paddleboard or snorkel with Bay Explorer. Tick swimming with dolphins off your bucket list with Dolphin Seafaris or Orca Wild Adventures.
5 DISCOVER AN ECO-SANCTUARY
One of New Zealand’s little-known treasures, Moutohorā (Whale Island) is home to the oldest living dinosaur, the endangered tuatara. Moutohorā sits 9km off the coast of Whakatāne and can only be accessed by a guided tour. On a tour with Moutohorā Island Tours, you will hear why Moutohorā is a bird lover’s paradise and you can swim at a secluded hot water beach. Alternatively, sail by wind with KG Kayak’s catamaran and then explore sea caves and a fur seal colony by kayak.
7 TASTE PLENTY
Blessed with fertile land and open seas, the Bay of Plenty is renowned for its plentiful produce and seafood. Local establishments take full advantage of these fresh ingredients and there is no shortage of world-class dining options to enjoy. One activity that’s unique to the region and should not be missed, however, is a visit to a working kiwifruit orchard with Kiwifruit Country Tours where you’ll learn about this small but mighty superfood. If beer is more your thing, indulge in the local craft beer scene with Brew Bus where you’ll be able to speak to the brewers themselves.
8 WALK AMONG GIANTS IN THE WHIRINAKI FOREST
Deep in the central North Island lies an ancient forest waiting to be discovered. Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park is one of the world’s last prehistoric rainforests. It is home to first generation native trees, rare native birds and 155 kilometres of walking, tramping and mountain biking tracks to suit all levels. Take a guided eco-cultural tour and immerse yourself in an ancient, natural world.
9 ENJOY WHITE WATER ACTION ON A RIVERBUG
4
Invented in New Zealand, Riverbug is a fun way to ride whitewater rapids. From mild to wild, you can choose between different levels. Explore the scenic Wairoa river valley near Tauranga on the Fun Bug tour which is perfect for families and younger children. If you prefer to splash through fun roller coaster wave-trains, marvel at waterfalls cascading down lush mossy rock walls and hear some local stories, the Action Bug tour on the Rangitāiki river in the Eastern Bay of Plenty is for you.
10 UNEARTH HISTORY
The Elms, Te Papa Tauranga is one of the oldest heritage sites in New Zealand. Local Māori chiefs invited the missionary Alfred Brown and his wife Charlotte to establish the mission station in the early 19th-century. Māori and the new European missionaries worked together to create the site, comprising of permanent structures including Brown’s library and the gardens. Located at the northern tip of Te Papa peninsula, it was built in 1847 and became home to the Browns and their descendants for almost two centuries.

SPAIN & EUROPE IN STYLE
South Africa, THREE WAYS
Whether you love feasting on local delicacies and wine, or sightseeing from a great height, South Africa is just the ticket
WORDS BY HANNAH LOUEY
Only in recent years has South Africa’s gems—beyond safaris and braai—come to the attention of the savvy traveller. With an eclectic mix of culture, homegrown wines and more outdoor activities than you could dream of, South Africa is a destination like no other.
Art and culture
South Africa is a mecca for artists and crafters from all over Africa, from Mozambique to Zimbabwe and as far afield as the Congo. Visitors can pick up beautiful arts such as vibrant oil paintings and stone sculptures as well as indigenous crafts like handwoven baskets and vibrant sculptures, everywhere from local markets to road-side stalls.
For fine art lovers, there’s plenty on offer, too. The Goodman Gallery, which has venues in Johannesburg and Cape Town, was established over 50 years ago and was one of the key galleries in the 1985 Art Against Apartheid exhibition. Today, it is considered one of the most influential art galleries in Southern Africa with a focus on emerging and established artists from the African continent, or those who engage in African themes.
Stellenbosch Art Gallery, located about an hour from Cape Town in South Africa’s premier wine region, specialises in sculptures, ceramics and handmade glass. The area itself is a worthwhile stopover: Stellenbosch is the second oldest town in South Africa and is home to some of the most beautiful examples of Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture. And what about that wine? Stellenbosch is best known for its exceptional reds—the Cabernet Sauvignons are full-bodied with intense colour and deep aromas.
Knysna Fine Art, located on the scenic Garden Route, has an eclectic mix of art, photography, sculpture and ceramics, as well as rotating exhibitions from local and international artists. Past exhibits include Pretoria-born Lionel Smit known for his portraiture and sculpture and award-winning Stilbaai artist, Hannalie Taute.

Wine and dine
Move over Italy—South Africa may not be one of the world’s premier foodie destinations, but it should be. Over the centuries, the amalgamation of different cultures—including African, Dutch, German, French, British and Cape Malay—has resulted in a mix of dishes that are particular to South Africa. Like many destinations, sometimes the best way to understand a culture is to try the most popular dishes.
The first, and perhaps the simplest, is braaibroodjies, or grilled sandwiches. There are plenty of variants on this humble toastie, but a cheese, onion and tomato braaibroodjies is the original and best.
For a taste of Cape Malay, try denningvleis, a lamb dish flavoured with spices and one of South Africa’s oldest dishes, or bobotie which is similar to moussaka and contains a delicious mixture of curried meat and fruit with a creamy egg-based topping.
When dining in South Africa, copy the locals and experience a shisa nyama. Translated from Zulu, this literally means ‘burnt or cooked meat’. In practice, it's when friends gather around a fire and the communal meal, usually consisting of meat, is cooked over coals. If you don’t score an invite from a local, the best place to take part in shisa nyama is in the township of Soweto near Johannesburg.
Where there is a healthy foodie scene, an even healthier wine scene usually follows. Similar in style to Australia or California, but at a fraction of the price, South Africa’s wine regions deserve a place on any itinerary.
The most famous of these, after Stellenbosch, is Franschhoek, located about an hour from Cape Town. Not only is it home to some of the best cellar doors in the country, the European-inspired towns, galleries and cafes, and picturesque landscapes make it a charming place to visit. The distant Cape Dutch style architecture is distinctly grander than any Australian or New Zealand wineries. The Franschhoek Wine Train is as dreamy as it sounds: this hop-on, hop-off tram allows visitors to explore up to six wineries in a day and there are five wine tram routes to choose from— pure genius, right?

Outdoor adventures
Regardless of your thrill-threshold, South Africa has options aplenty—get your heart racing atop a mountain or put on your boots and take the scenic route.
For adrenaline junkies, Bloukrans Bridge is your place. Located on the Western Cape, the world’s third-highest bungee jump is a dizzying 216 metres high. Prefer to keep two feet firmly on the ground? Walk the Bloukrans Bridge instead, it's free for friends or family accompanying the bungee-jumper.
If you love hiking, pop on your boots and head for Table Mountain. Towering more than 1,000 metres above Cape Town, it’s a breathtaking experience in more ways than one. There are plenty of trails of varying levels and durations, the most popular being the Platteklip Gorge trail. Depending on your fitness level, the zig-zag hike can take 1.5-3 hours one way. Once you reach the top, you can either hike back down or catch the cable car. For an extra dose of adrenalin fun, abseiling from the summit is a oncein-a-lifetime experience. With the Atlantic Ocean directly below your feet, the view, unsurprisingly, is like nowhere else in the world.
The Pipe Track trail, while less thrill and more chill, doesn’t skimp on breathtaking views. Take in the Atlantic Ocean and Lion’s Head, a 669 metres high peak next to Table Mountain, at your own pace. This route suits all fitness levels as it goes around Table Mountain rather than up to the summit.
If you prefer aquatic pursuits, head to Gansbaai, about two hours from Cape Town and get up close and personal with the local sharks. While many will baulk at the idea, cage diving in Gansbaai is one of the most popular reasons for a visit: it has the highest concentration of great whites in the world so if you’re going to do it, this is the place. In addition, Gansbaai offers superb whale watching from June to early December if this is more your pace, and Geyser Island is home to 50,000 Cape Fur Seals.
A visit to South Africa is not complete without seeing wildlife. St Lucia, in KwaZulu-Natal in northeastern South Africa, is the best place to see hippos in the wild. In the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO site, you can view crocodiles and hippos in their natural habitat. The kayak expedition, which runs for 2.5 hours, is a hearty mix of both the tranquil and the terrifying.
If you’re travelling the world-famous Garden Route in the Western Cape (an adventure in itself), be sure to stop in Knysna. On the banks of the Knysna lagoon is a small marine estuary that is home to seahorses. Hire a local guide who will show you the best places to snorkel and spy on these enchanting little creatures as they go about their day.

What are your favourite national parks to visit in South Africa?
Kruger and the surrounding private reserves offer fantastic game viewing. While sightings can never be guaranteed, I have seen the Big 5 in this region many times. It is one of the more reliable locations to see white rhino, lion and the elusive leopard, plus lots of other species including giraffe, hippos, hyenas. If you are lucky, the beautiful though endangered African Wild Dog inhabits this area and is a very special treat to see as they are very active and fun to observe.
What do you wish you knew before you visited South Africa?
Travelling in winter, June to August, can be quite cold— be sure to pack warm clothes, especially for those early morning game drives.

What are some common misconceptions about South Africa?
South Africa does have a reputation of being unsafe but when travelling as a tourist it is very safe. You are almost always with a guide on a game drive or on a day tour, and hotels and lodges are located in safe areas. As long as you do not stray into non-tourist regions, you can relax and enjoy the warm and friendly hospitality of the locals.
People often think that a trip to Africa is a once in a liftetime experience, but once you have experienced the joys of seeing animals in the wild you will want to go back for more. Each game drive is different and you never know what you will see. Even if you see the same species multiple times, they are doing something different and displaying different behaviours.

What are your tips for first time visitors?
Pack a good camera! South Africa is a beautiful country, from the coast to the game parks, and there are so many incredible moments to capture. I highly recommend experiencing the Garden Route and coastline if possible. South Africa's coastline is rugged and beautiful, full of amazing walks, wineries, wildlife (whales, sharks and seals) and so much more.
Must-do experiences?
Embrace South African cuisine, especially biltong and a braai (barbecue). South Africa has some delicious food, and some very different experiences to what you would have at home, and I highly recommend trying as many traditional foods as possible.
Must-see city?
I absolutely love Cape Town—it has it all! The natural beauty of Table Mountain, great restaurants and nightlife, amazing beaches, a lovely waterfront district, and plenty of activities and day trip options. I love exploring the city and its beautiful spots by day, and then unwinding at the end of the day by the waterfront and making the most of the city's vibrant nightlife.

NAME JOHN FOREMAN
OCCUPATION CONDUCTOR
HOME TOWN MELBOURNE
Two iconic Australian musical legends, Anthony Callea and Tim Campbell join forces with conductor extraordinaire, John Foreman and the Australian Pops Orchestra, this November in a new concert featuring the timeless hits of Elton John and George Michael.
The Songs of Elton and George will travel to Hamer Hall in Melbourne from November 8 and the Sydney Opera House on November 16. We sat down and spoke with John ahead of the show to talk music, travel, and what to do in his adopted home town of Melbourne.
Congratulations on your new show with fellow music legends, Anthony Callea and Tim Campbell! Can you describe the show and what can audiences expect?
It’s going to be amazing. As we all know, Anthony and Tim are fantastic singers and they’re both great performers. But it’s particularly thrilling to experience the sound of wonderful voices together with an orchestra – it’s an epic wall of sound unlike anything else. The guys will be performing the music of Elton John and George Michael. Each of these incredible artists has a brilliant repertoire, so the show will be wall-to-wall hits. Audiences can expect great songs, performed by brilliant singers, with the spectacle and gravitas of an orchestra. It’ll be fantastic!
You started your music career on Good Morning Australia when you were 19 and went onto work with Australian music royalty. What have been some of your career highlights to date?
I’ve been very lucky – and yes, Good Morning Australia was a great break for me. It was so much fun. I loved working with Bert and the whole team. I also loved working on Australian Idol – again, looking back, I’m reminded of the night Anthony sang The Prayer with the Idol orchestra – that’s the sort of

excitement we’re aiming to recreate with this concert. There have been so many highlights – I think meeting people like Burt Bacharach and Tony Bennett would be up there as my favourite moments. In terms of what happens next, I’m really trying to encourage more people to come and enjoy the incomparable sound of a live orchestra.
Describe your perfect day in your hometown?
I live in Melbourne now but I grew up in Newcastle where I lived until I was 15. Newcastle is a great city, with a vibrant cultural community and, usually, great weather and Melbourne is one of the best places in the world to live. A perfect day in Melbourne is a sunny 21 degrees, begins with an al fresco brunch somewhere and culminates in a great show in one of Melbourne's many wonderful theatres.
Top tips for visitors to Mebourne?
Enjoy some of the world’s best coffee, explore the fabulous city laneways, experience the many fantastic rooftop bars and go for a drive on the Great Ocean Road. The Botanical Gardens are absolutely beautiful.
Where are you headed on your next holiday?
I just returned from a quick getaway in country Victoria. Why? Excellent question. I really wanted an easy break, within a twohour drive, where I could take the dog! Sometimes it’s great to have an action-packed, fill-the-day, do-everything holiday. This time, I did nothing.
Once-in-a-lifetime bucket list destination?
I’d love to go somewhere really far north – like Norway, Finland or Iceland. There’s something intriguing and magical about cold weather (in small doses) and I’d love to see the Northern Lights.
