IN THE KNOW What to do, see and where to play

The happiest place on Earth

The United Nations has released its 10th annual World Happiness Report and, for the fifth year in a row, Finland has nabbed top spot as the World’s Happiest Country, followed by Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Anyone for a trip to Santa's village? Check out our Finland tours here.

The largest art museum in the Nordics Experience old and new with Norway's largest collections of art, architecture and design now housed under the same roof at the new National Museum. Boasting an exhibition area of 14,000 square metres, this space in Oslo’s city centre has doubled in size.

An island of tulips

New York may be known as a concrete jungle, but it’s also home to many stunning parks, with an exciting new addition to the ranks: Little Island. Located in Hudson River Park, this peculiar-looking urban oasis sits on top of 132 floating concrete 'tulip pots' and offers peaceful respite from Manhattan’s frenetic pace.

Take the plunge

If swimming with whale sharks in Western Australia is on your bucket list (and it really should be), now is your chance before the season wraps up in late August. These gentle giants arrive in Exmouth from mid-March every year, offering an unforgettable experience for intrepid adventurers looking to swim with the largest fish in the ocean.

Let them play tennis

The Royal Tennis Court at the Palace of Versailles is open to the public again following a substantial €1.8 million restoration. Originally created for Louis XIV as a sports hall for the royal family, this somewhat unsuspecting room is renowned for its key role in the foundation of French democracy. INSPIRINGVACATIONS.COM 5

TOUR SPOTLIGHT | SOUNDS OF SILENCE

Feast for the senses

Dine under a twinkling canopy of desert stars

PHOTOS: MAURIZIO DE MAT TEI/SHUT TERSTOCK ; VOYAGES INDIGENOUS TOURIS M AUSTRALIA /ANS ON S MART PHOTOGRAPHY

WORDS BY EMILY HUMPHREY

One of Australia’s most famous and recognisable landmarks, the chance to see Uluru is undoubtedly an encounter to remember. Want to take it to the next level? The Sounds of Silence dinner is a magical Australian experience. This signature Outback event – enjoyed now for nearly 30 years – is (deservedly) in the Australian Tourism Hall of Fame. As the traditional and cultural land of the Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara people (also known collectively as the Anangu people), Uluru is not only awe-inspiring and massive, it’s a site of deep spiritual and cultural significance. A short distance north from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Uluru, the evening begins on a private dune top; guests are welcomed with chilled sparkling wine and canapes while watching the sun go down over Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. With uninterrupted 360-degree views, this is the best time to witness the striking colour changes of one of the largest monoliths in the world. Depending on conditions like light and weather, the colour of the rock can change throughout the day. At sunset, it’s especially dazzling as these changes happen in just minutes. As the landscape becomes drenched in darkness, a didgeridoo sets the scene. Settle into the outdoor dining area for a candlelit dinner – the food may play second fiddle to this setting but it’s still impressive, a bush tucker-inspired dinner complemented by Australian wines. An astronomer leads a star-gazing session in the clear, southern night sky. It’s the perfect pitch-dark setting to view the constellations with expert guidance and, suddenly, the night’s name makes sense. As well as silence; there’s a surreal, peaceful experience to be had here under the shimmering sky. TOP: Uluru at sunset; RIGHT: Sounds of Silence dinner; Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia

FIVE OF THE BEST

SHORE EXCURSIONS IN ALASKA No matter your interest, there's an Alaskan adventure (or two) to suit you in every cruise port WORDS BY EMILY HUMPHREY

3. WHITE PASS SUMMIT SCENIC RAILROAD Ride the iron trail of the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, a narrow-gauge railroad built more than 120 years ago that is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. Get a good look at the ruggedly beautiful terrain – mountains, glaciers, waterfalls and gorges – as it passes through two tunnels and over sky-high trestles and remote valleys to climb to the summit marking the border of Canada and the USA. Commentary explains the Klondike gold rush.

1. CRAB FISHING

PHOTOS: MELIS SAM N/SHUT TERSTOCK

Deadliest Catch fan? Set sail from Ketchikan and experience how commercial fishermen make a living out in the Bering Sea – no need to worry about rough seas, as you’ll stay in the calm, protected waters of the Inside Passage. Skilled crew will haul and set long lines and 320kg king crab pots to land the catch of the day, before guests have the chance to get up close for a good look at these creatures. Prefer to crack one open? A lumberjack show tour features an all-you-can-eat crab feast.

2. MENDENHALL GLACIER Among the 38 glaciers that make up the celebrated Juneau Ice Field, mighty Mendelhall Glacier is surely the jewel in the icy crown. An easy drive from downtown Juneau, the chance to see Alaska’s best-known ice sheet can be paired with very Alaskan experiences – dog sledding on the glacier (with a helicopter ride), a salmon bake, or wildlife viewing around Stephens Passage (a favourite spot for humpback whales).

4. NATIVE ALASKAN CULTURE IN KETCHIKAN At Saxman Native Village, you can get an up-close look at the rich living culture of Native Americans in Southeast Alaska. After being welcomed by the Tlingits with song and dance, explore the Village Carving Center and the Saxman Totem Park, where a guide explains the mysteries of one of the largest gatherings of totems in the world.

5. WHALE WATCHING Icy Strait Point is not only a prime spot for viewing humpback whales, you’re also likely to spot other exciting wildlife like orca, harbor seals, sea otters and perhaps a coastal brown bear. On most tours, whale sightings are guaranteed! On a small-group tour onboard a research vessel departing from Juneau, guests can play marine scientist for a day; drawing plankton samples and using a GPS camera to identify whale species and record their various behaviours. RETURNED TRAVELLERS | GREAT SOUTHERN RAIL

ALL ABOARD THE GREAT SOUTHERN RAIL We caught up with Lindsay following his rail journey through Adelaide, Canberra & Brisbane What prompted you to book the Great Southern Rail Discovery tour? Has this tour or part of Australia been on your bucket list for a while? I had heard great things about the Ghan and Indian Pacific when I noticed the Great Southern trip. I wanted to do a rail trip with Journey Beyond and this one was very attractive, so I looked at it immediately. The three days with excursions in Adelaide and Brisbane were wonderful toppings. Did your expectations meet reality? My expectations were greatly exceeded, both the rail journey and the non-rail components. The hotels in Adelaide and Brisbane were excellent as were the day tours. I had travelled all around the USA with Amtrak and that set my expectations, but to put the Journey Beyond Rail product up against Amtrak is really no contest – the Great Southern Rail trip was a clear winner. What do you wish you knew before travelling on this tour/part of Australia? It would have been good to have a fly option for the Kangaroo Island excursion as around 18 hours is a long day. All on board were wonderful, and that goes for travellers and staff. Any surprises? I really liked the Kangaroo Island and Barossa tours. How Kangaroo Island has recovered from the fires is amazing – I was expecting it to be still devastated.

INSPIRED TO VISIT SOUTH AUSTRALIA? Check out our tours here

What were the highlights of this tour? I really loved the way the Kangaroo Island tour guide explained how the fires affected the fauna and flora, and how positive everything is now. Both hotel locations were excellent. The lunch at Parliament House in Canberra was outstanding and far exceeded my expectations. What do you say to those pondering whether or not to book – any advice for future travellers? Definitely book it but hopefully they will also have the Brisbane to Adelaide option – I would book it straight away. I found the solo traveller option extremely good value for money, as was the hotel and train accommodation. Feast your way through the culinary heart of South Australia

INSPIRINGVACATIONS.COM 13

G

rab your picnic basket and esky and set off on a journey through the iconic wine regions of McLaren Vale, the Barossa, Adelaide Hills and Clare Valley. Let your taste buds lead the way along the Epicurean Way road trip as you sip and dine your way through South Australia’s best wineries, restaurants and artisan produce. Here’s our guide to the best things to see, do – and most importantly, taste – along the way between Willunga to Hahndorf.

WILLUNGA FARMERS MARKETS Kick off your culinary crusade through South Australia at the Willunga Farmers Markets, an institution for local Fleurieu Peninsula foodies offering the region’s best produce. Buy direct from local farmers and artisan producers and sample a smorgasbord of seasonal fruits, vegetables, pastries, olive oils and small goods. Pack a picnic basket and stock up on fresh bread, local cheese, almonds grown in the groves just down the road, honey from bees that have feasted on the very same almond blossom, and beer INSPIRED and cider brewed just minutes away. D'ARENBERG WINE, MCLAREN VALE

AUSTRALIA? Check out our tours here

Next stop? Happy hour in a giant Rubik's Cube! Ever imagined Willy Wonka was a wine, not chocolate, lover? We reckon the result would be something very similar to the d’Arenberg Cube. Seemingly floating above the vineyards, this otherworldly cellar door offers one of the most unique wine tasting destinations in Australia. Set among the rolling hills of McLaren Vale on the largest biodynamic winery in Australia, the Cube features a tasting room with 360-degree views over five levels, several bars, a casual dining restaurant, a museum and an art gallery. Spend an afternoon sampling a selection of d’Arenberg’s best drops, or blend and bottle your very own wine during a blending bench masterclass. A fine dining experience also awaits on-site at d’Arry’s Verandah Restaurant.

ROAD TRIP | SOUTH AUSTRALIA

THE CURRANT SHED, MCLAREN VALE A feast of local, seasonal produce awaits at The Currant Shed. Set between a delightful lime grove and beautiful vineyards, The Currant Shed was once a part of a homestead where early McLaren Vale residents made their living from mixed farming enterprises. Today, the fine dining restaurant blends inherent charm, stunning views, and one of McLaren Vale's finest menus.

MAXWELL WINES Just down the road, Maxwell Wines is an idyllic location for unforgettable food, wine and mead in the heart of McLaren Vale. Surrounded by picturesque vineyards that date back to 1893 and set in a stunning limestone building, enjoy one of the most imaginative lunches you have ever dined on while sipping their unique range of sparkling meads. Sample from an impressive line-up of locally sourced seasonal produce, pick fresh herbs and veggies from their garden or put together a cheese board from the cellar door and relax with a picnic down near the vines. Stay a night or two among the vineyards at one of McLaren Vale’s best winery accommodation options including the Vineyard Retreat, Hotel California Road @ Inkwell Wines, or Shadow Creek.

THE LANE VINEYARD, ADELAIDE HILLS Next, set your coordinates for the fairytale villages, world-class wineries, and award-winning regional restaurants of the Adelaide Hills. Pull up at The Lane Vineyard restaurant and cellar door, where the only thing that rivals the food and wine is the view. Feast on a seven-course chef’s menu, paired with some of The Lane’s signature wines. Here, the menu features seasonal ingredients grown either on the estate or by local farmers, growers and suppliers – with all ingredients traceable and ethically produced. Consider yourself a wine snob? Go behind the scenes of The Lane’s state-ofthe-art winery for a crash course in winemaking with head winemaker Turon White. Create your own master blend, bottle it and take it home to savour later. INSPIRINGVACATIONS.COM 15

ROAD TRIP | SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Nothing compares to the taste of fruit plucked straight from the field, and some of South Australia’s best produce awaits in orchards across the Adelaide Hills. Nestled just outside the tourist hot spot of Hahndorf, picking your own strawberries at Beerenberg Farm is a rite of passage during any trip to the Adelaide Hills, plus you can sample their famous jams, sauces, and condiments direct from the farm shop. You’ll also find seasonal pick-your-own cherry, apple, pear and fig orchards tucked all over the hills so take your pick of the crop.

WOODSIDE CHEESE WRIGHTS, ADELAIDE HILLS The perfect accompaniment to your freshly picked fruit? Award-winning artisan cheese crafted with milk straight from the Adelaide Hills. From gooey to crumbly, creamy and sharp, Woodside Cheese Wrights create seasonal cheeses using locally sourced goat, cow and buffalo milk. Tastings are a must and you can even try your hand at the art of cheese making during a masterclass. If you’re in need of a sweet treat afterwards, head next door and stock up on locally made chocolates at the Willy Wonka-worthy Melba’s Chocolate Factory in Woodside.

AMBLESIDE DISTILLERS Located on a scenic acreage property at Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills, owners Trudy, Steve and Matt invite all gin lovers to their distillery and tasting bar, Ambleside Distillers. Enjoy the picturesque setting while kicking back, relaxing and sipping one of the handcrafted signature gins and a food platter, or experience their newly expanded tasting bar complete with a nine-metre-long reclaimed red brick wall and a sprawling timber deck with views of the surrounding hills. Austria’s most romantic towns Crystal clear glacial lakes, snow-capped mountains and rolling Alpine hills, the Austrian countryside is perfect WORDS BY TOM PATTINSON

20 INSPIRING VACATIONS MAGAZINE | JULY/AUGUST 2022

GLOBETROTTER | AUSTRIA

A

ustria has no shortage of fairytale scenery – from the lakes to the mountains to the hills, Austria captivates. Here, we visit the most romantic towns in Austria.

Millstatt

Millstatt is found on the north shore of the Millstatter Lake and is surrounded by lush Alpine forest with stone and timber houses sheltering in a still water bay. The Benedictine Millstatt was what brought people to this region in the 11th century, but the natural beauty and excellent weather has made it one of the most picturesque towns in the state of Carinthia. In the warm summer months, the lake is teeming with boats and swimmers, as well as music lovers who flock here to take part in the famous annual Millstatt Music Weeks of choral, orchestral and chamber music performances.

St. Gilgen

Just a day trip away from Salzburg is the picturesque town of St. Gilgen (Sankt Gilgen), found on the shores of Lake Wolfgang and surrounded by Salzkammergut mountain range. This is truly The Sound of Music country – and in fact where many of the outdoor shots were filmed. Milka cows, alpine yodeling and every wonderful impression of the Austrian Alps can be found here. It is also where Mozart’s mother was born and where much of his family – including his sister and grandfather – worked and lived. The colourful old buildings seem to have hardly changed in the last few centuries as this wealthy town became the summer retreat for the rich of Salzburg. The Christmas market at St. Gilgen is stunning and in the summer, a cable car ride to the top of the Zwolferhorn is unmissable.

Zell am See

On the banks of Lake Zell is the famous ski resort Zell am See, just south of the city of Salzburg. It is popular with skiers in winter thanks to the glacial mountains that keep snow on the slopes for longer than most of its lower-lying neighbours. The town itself has been inhabited since Roman times but much of what is found today is from the 19th century, and the Romanesque St Hippolyte’s Church tower dates back to the 15th century. During the summer months, people take boats out on the lake, and paddleboard and cool off in the crystal clear glacial waters. It is certainly worth enjoying a drink at The Grand Hotel with undisturbed panoramic views of the lake and the mountains.

Bad Gastein

Bad Gastein is a beautiful spa town that looks like it could have been lifted straight from a Wes Anderson film. A huge waterfall cuts through the centre of the town, rushing past magnificent stately buildings that have been used over the years as hotels, residencies and treatment centres. Bad (meaning 'spa') Gastein has been known for its thermal springs and these healing waters have drawn the nobles and royalty since the 19th century – thus, the Belle Epoque style of architecture exists here to ensure the town was fit for a king. Even Marie Curie came here to research the radon in the water that is thought to help with ailments such as arthritis. Today, while still a spa resort town, people also enjoy hiking and biking in the summer and skiing in the nearby mountains in the winter.

Durnstein

INSPIRED TO VISIT AUSTRIA? Check out our tours here

PHOTO: XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX

On the River Danube, the medieval town of Durnstein sits proudly in the shadow of its stunning medieval castle. Many cruises down the Danube will stop at this walled town to visit many of the historical sites that date back to the 10th century. One of these is the famous Durnstein Abbey – a tall tower, painted blue that has become a symbol of the Wachau Valley region. The town’s buildings show a lovely mishmash of Austrian architecture during the ages and the town is also happily situated in the centre of one of Austria’s most famous white wine regions. So enjoy a glass of Grüner Veltliner while watching the sun go down over the Danube.

Alpbach

Austria is famous for its beautiful ski resort towns and arguably the most stunning of them all is Alpbach. Nestled in the mountains in the state of Tyrol, Alpbach is regularly voted the most beautiful town in Austria and has even won the accolade of most beautiful town in Europe in the past, thanks to its traditional timber buildings and beautiful mountainous backdrop. It is law in Alpbach that all new buildings must be constructed in the traditional stone and timber style, with low sloping roofs to keep the heavy winter snow at bay. This has prevented the construction of jarring new concrete and glass buildings, retaining the town’s charm and character. This small town is not only one of the most impressive ski resorts in winter; in summer, the brightly coloured flower shows that residents put on are complemented beautifully by the verdant hills, attracting not only visitors from around the world, but also an annual European Forum for world leaders.

Hallstatt

The ultimate postcard-perfect village, Hallstatt is found in the Salzkammergut Mountains on the banks of the Hallstatter Lake. The village sits right on the clear waters of the lakes, flanked by lush green alpine mountains that turn into a snowy winter wonderland in the darker months. Many of its gabled buildings date back to the 16th century including the ancient Church of Christ, whose spire is reflected on the lake’s still waters. Up until the 19th century it was only accessible by foot or boat meaning that much of its cobbled streets have remained in pristine condition for centuries. It is said to have been home to prehistoric Austrians who have lived on this site for millennia. It is now the country’s most visited town and the Chinese hold it in such high regard that they have made a billion-dollar copy of the entire village in the Chinese province of Guangdong.

GLOBETROTTER | AUSTRIA

Located high up in the Alps, Innsbruck is found just south of Germany and just north of Italy and is the capital of the Tyrol region. Any European fond of winter sports knows that Tyrol has some of the best skiing in the world; Innsbruck is the starting point for many a winter holiday. But it certainly isn’t just a jumping-off point for people heading out to the mountains. It is a stunning small town that sits in a broad valley surrounded on both sides by tall, snow-capped mountains that loom over the town. The old town also houses the beautiful Hofgarten that was also created for the Royal Wedding and the Basilica de Wilten – the most beautiful Rococo church in Austria. While the Sill River flows gently through the town in summer and creeks with ice during the winter months, the colourful buildings that sit at its shore beam brightly all through the year. Ambras Castle is a rare example of Renaissance architecture in this part of the world, surrounded by an English garden. Built in the 16th century on the site of a 10th-century castle it was the residence of Archduke Ferdinand II, one of the most prolific art collectors of the day. Many of the artworks he collected are still on display for visitors to this very day. FROM TOP: The medieval town of Durnstein; Wilten Basilica; The village of Millstatt

From stargazing to glacier hiking, New Zealand's South Island is a magical winter wonderland

HOLIDAY AT HOME | SOUTH ISLAND

W

ith some of the most spectacular landscapes in the world, it's no wonder the South Island reaches peak beauty during the cooler months, from jagged, snow-capped peaks to glacial lakes in brilliant blue hues. Here, the best things to do when the temperature drops.

ADMIRE THE WINTER

1 NIGHT SKIES

New Zealand’s dark, clear skies make for magical stargazing experiences. Take a tour at Tekapo's Dark Sky Project or Tekapo Stargazing and bask in the starry night. Visit Aoraki/Mount Cook and gaze into the wonders above through powerful telescopes with Big Sky Stargazing. Longer winter nights can also mean that you might be lucky enough to catch the celestial wonder aurora australis (southern lights). Winter is also a time to celebrate Matariki, the Māori new year. During the months of June and July, the Matariki star cluster reappears in the skies, ushering in a new year according to the Māori lunar calendar.

E XPLORE THOUSAND-

2 YEAR-OLD GLACIERS

New Zealand is home to many stunning glaciers, with most of them located near the Main Divide in the Southern Alps. Glacier country lies on the west coast, where the two most accessible glaciers – Fox and Franz Josef – are found. Follow the walking tracks up to the terminus of either glacier for an up-close view, or hike through the bush to a viewing point. If you want to get really close, book a heli-hike guided tour and explore the ice caves and icefalls (frozen waterfalls).

WARM UP IN BEAUTIFULLY

3 LOCATED HOT TUBS

You’ll find hot tubs and hot springs aplenty! Take in the stunning mountain views from New Zealand's highest altitude spa perched up at Mt Hutt. In the resort town of Hanmer Springs, soak in mineral-rich hot pools that are surrounded by native gardens with alpine vistas. Go off the beaten track and immerse yourself in the wilderness at Maruia Hot Springs. Bath under the clear, starry night at Hot Tubs Omarama or indulge in a luxurious evening onsen experience, lit only by Japanese lanterns from sunset.

ADMIRE FIORDLAND'S

4 WINTERY SCENES

Fiordland is one of the most dramatic and beautiful parts of New Zealand. Experience its magical treasures by water, air, or on foot. Speed across picturesque Lake Te Anau on a jet boat tour or change the pace and take a boat cruise in one of the majestic sounds. Book a scenic flight and view lush peaks, sparkling lakes, glaciers and spectacular fjords from above.

6 THE SNOW

For those who'd like to spend time in the snow, but skiing and snowboarding isn't their thing, there are plenty of other activities on offer. Feel the thrill of a sled dog team running through the trails of the Southern Alps with UnderDog Sled Dog Tours, or experience a backcountry snowmobiling adventure with Queenstown Snowmobiles. Meet the dog sledding team on the kennel tour experience with Real Dog Adventures in Central Otago. If you're up on the ski fields, go tobogganing down the slopes of Mt Hutt, Cardrona, Coronet Peak or The Remarkables. Ride the gondola up Bob's Peak above Queenstown to enjoy panoramic views of the Southern Alps and Lake Wakatipu.

BE ADVENTUROUS

8 THIS WINTER

Feeling brave? Will you take on the challenge of bungy jumping in Queenstown, skydiving in Wānaka, or paragliding and ziplining across the South Island? Take in the breathtaking views with tandem paragliding or try hang gliding 5,400 feet above sea level. Feel the exhilaration of a jet boat ride and journey deep into the heart of Mount Aspiring National Park. For something truly unique, experience Wildwire in Wānaka – the world's highest waterfall cable climb.

Embark on the unforgettable TranzAlpine rail journey. Travel from the East Coast through the patchwork Canterbury Plains up into Arthur’s Pass National Park. From here, journey down into the wild beech forests of the West Coast, finishing in Greymouth. The train stops at several remote stations along the way, so you have the option to explore more of the area. This is no ordinary train trip – you’ll venture past the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps, the ice-fed Waimakariri River and dramatic viaducts.

New Zealand is renowned for amazing whale watching opportunities, complete with marvellous natural surroundings. You'll be spoilt for choice: during the winter months, humpback whales migrate from Antarctica and travel north to the warmer waters of New Zealand to breed. They stay in warm waters and migrate back south to feed as winter comes to an end, making winter the best time to see these majestic giants.

INTERVIEW

Q &A NAME PAUL HOCKING

OCCUPATION PRODUCT MANAGER CITY MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

What’s been your favourite holiday? Hiking the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage in Japan would have to be the highlight of my travels so far. We spent five days hiking between ancient temples and small mountain villages, swimming in mountain rivers, bathing in traditional Japanese onsens and eating incredible home-cooked meals. The warmth of the locals we stayed with and the stunning scenery has me longing to go back.

Peyto Lake in the Canadian Rockies

Did you always want to work in travel? Travel has always been a big part of my life so it was an easy decision to make a career out of it. Even with the challenges the last few years has thrown at our industry, I feel extremely lucky to work in travel every day. Where else would you most like to live in the world? After a few years living in Sweden and Canada, the next home base should be somewhere warmer. I could see our little family setting up in Spain or Portugal for a couple of years. Where are you off to next? My next trip is to WA to visit my brother and explore the Margaret River region. It's been a tough few years apart so I can't wait to get over there and explore his home with him!

What’s your favourite, or most frequent, Australian destination? I may be biased as it's only a few hours away, but I always come back to The Grampians in western Victoria. My family took us there every year and each time I visit I am instantly at peace. I still try and spend a few days in the Grampians every year.

PHOTO: XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX

It’s common knowledge around here that you’re the Canada travel expert. What’s your number one tip? I always tell people to visit Canada and Alaska in May or late August/September. Travelling through the Rockies in May gives you the magical snow-capped peaks, and the bears are active after a long hibernation. September in Alaska is the perfect time to witness the salmon run. Wildlife comes from everywhere to feast before the long winter. Which famous person would you most love to travel with? Larry David would be the perfect travel companion. He is hilarious and would get us into plenty of trouble which always makes for a good story. 30 INSPIRING VACATIONS MAGAZINE | JULY/AUGUST 2022
