Day ONE. instantAarhus is an experimental course created within the framework of a BA Workshop’13. The experiment includes inflatable structures and gives an overview over possibilities of combining the forgotten symbolism of non- existent and a reflection upon the options of building with the help of air - a necessary and subtle element.
Day TWO. The Main Dome The Main Dome as a central element and a focal point was constructed by a combined work of two members of each of the 23 teams. The Dome consists of 8 m long 24 pieces stapled together. The assemblings are carried from the inner side. The construction is fastened to the ground by digging the edge in a 30 cm deep groove. On the top of it there is an opening for permitting the excess air to exit. Two industrial fans were used to inflate the dome. Nevertheless a strong wind condition moved the dome and created a lively shape of a jellyfish. This very condition resulted in destroying the construction in two places. The cracks continued all the way from the bottom up to the top as the wind pressure from the outside and inside were acting as contra-parts. The construction was reinforced by tape and new assemblings. Parallel with this a group work took place in designing the concept and the structure of neighborhood 4.
Day THREE. Neighborhood 4 Our construction is inspired by Mies von der Rohe’ s Barcelona Pavilion. The basic principal of which is working with the inner and outer space by introducing separation walls into the structure. The walls are of thin construction, have different length and width. When being fully inflated its main room represents a shape of a square with the separation walls stuck out to the sides as well as upwards. Each of the above mentioned walls can be pulled inwards, and is supplied with a string which can be fixed to the other string on the opposite side of the square. The internal connection will now separate the room inside the structure and will create a rather intimate private space. As a starting point the square has a dimension of 3x3x2 m. It allows us to relate the construction to the human scale and still to be able to change the characteristics of the room. The separation walls are of slightly various size though max. 1,5 x1 m and are mounted on various height. This simple concept allows us to alter both outer and inner space and change the characteristic of both rooms (inner and outer) from pubic to private and vv.
Day FOUR.Implementation The structure and the idea of creating a construction which works both with inner and outer space takes form. The 3 transformable walls are placed in the areas where they have a direct influence on the room and passage: -By the entrance. The wall drawn down functions as a hurdle and guides people in a certain direction. While pulled out it created a bigger inner space. -Two vertical walls create an internal division of the space. The walls can be pulled in and out independently, which increases form combinations. As for the outer space, the two walls work as an obstruction for the passerbys. -The horizontal wall gives an opportunity to create an intimate sphere within a rather public area of the structure. Being pulled outside it tends to separate the immediate outer space into lower and upper sphere.
