Meet Our 2024 President We are pleased to introduce you to Kym Clevenger who is succeeding Matt Swallows as the incoming President of the Insurors of Tennessee in 2024. Kym and Matt have closely coordinated the transition in leadership to ensure the business of the association moves forward seamlessly. She is looking forward to contributing to the growth, development, and success of the Insurors of Tennessee in 2024. Kym Clevenger has deep roots in the insurance industry and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the association. However, her path to the insurance business was not a straight line as is the case for many in our industry. While she had exposure to the insurance business early in life helping her father around The Assurance Center agency located in Knoxville, Tennessee, her father did not want his children to work in the insurance business, at least not at first. Kym was always interested in science and technology while growing up and decided to attend the University of Tennessee at Knoxville studying Biology, Zoology, and Medical Technology earning her Bachelor of Arts degree. Her natural aptitudes in life sciences to include analytical skills, critical thinking and attention to detail led her to want to apply that knowledge. She then continued her education at the Baptist School of Nursing in Memphis successfully earning her diploma. Her first job out of college as a nurse was working in an intensive care unit for a couple of years in a very demanding environment where attention to detail, organization, and precision was paramount. She then decided to explore the country and become a travel nurse working in ICU’s and acute care settings around the United States helping to save lives. She noted one of her favorite locations was working in Tampa, Florida where she enjoyed the community, the climate, and the beach. Kym’s entrepreneurial spirit then led her to start a medical technology company that she successfully owned and operated for a time until she had the opportunity to sell the company to another firm. It was at this point when the family-owned insurance business called her home. The business aspect of running an insurance agency intrigued her from an entrepreneurial perspective and aligned with her experience of helping and caring for people in her nursing career. The insurance agency would offer her the ability to serve once again by helping protect families and business from unexpected events via risk management and insurance. The Assurance Center was founded in 1969 by Kym’s father, Les Clevenger, and his business associates. Les and his team of insurance professionals built the agency from scratch into one of the most successful 4

Kym Clevenger and respected agencies in the region. The agency specialized in small to middle market size commercial insurance with a strong focus on personal lines insurance as well. Kym joined the agency and started out doing data entry learning the business from the bottom up. She eventually moved to Personal Lines and then Commercial Lines, learning about every aspect of the property and casualty insurance business. Kym stated, “I enjoyed getting to know clients and working to understand their exposure to develop insurance and risk management strategies to help protect them from unexpected events.” By 1996, her father was ready to retire and sold The Assurance Center to Kym making her the principal owner in the business and the President of the organization. Applying the lessons she learned in the agency, from her nursing career, and as a previous business owner she worked with her team to build on the positive reputation and strong foundation established by her father. Kym is proud that today the organization is an all-female business not by design but more by happenstance. She says that in addition to their substantial insurance business expertise, they are very good at building and keeping strong business relationships that translates directly to a high level of customer satisfaction and customer retention. Through the years, the agency continued to prosper though the inevitable ups and downs of insurance markets and economic conditions. Nevertheless, the insurance market is changing rapidly, staffing is persistently challenging, technology is ever evolving and the need to adapt became apparent. As a result, in the Summer of 2022, The Assurance Center became a partner with Oakbridge an insurance and risk management brokerage based out of Georgia to strategically position the agency to meet the needs of a rapidly evolving marketplace. Oakbridge has quickly grown to be one of the leading and most innovative insurance firms serving the Southeast. Kym was attracted to the partnership with Oakbridge after meeting with the leadership team and discovering how well they aligned with the values, culture, and strong emphasis on the needs of our clients and staff. They offered our agency the ability to scale our business, to elevate our operation with new tools and resources, and enhance the level of service we can deliver to clients. For our clients, they continue to receive the same great service from people they know and trust. So, the partnership is a clear win-win for everyone. The Tennessee Insuror

Meet Our 2024 President Kym Clevenger- Continued Kym has been a member of the Insurors of Tennessee since 1996 and has served as a Board Member, Regional Director and most recently Vice-President of Region III. Her contributions to the association through the years have been substantial as she steps into the leadership role as President. Kym places a strong emphasis on professional education and development. She earned her CIC in 2001, CPCU in 2007 and CAWC in 2013 and stays current relative to her professional designations. In fact, she is already at work to ensure the Insurors of Tennessee can deliver more in-person insurance licensing courses and other professional education to help improve the scarcity of qualified insurance professionals available for employment in insurance agencies and companies. She expects the first courses to be available early in 2024. Kym is looking forward to helping agencies and companies overcome the persistent lack of qualified talent in recent years.
PACs to be able to contribute to worthy candidates on Capitol Hill in Nashville, TN and in Washington, D.C. in an election year to help make sure our voice is heard. When Kym is not working at the agency or doing work on behalf of the Insurors of Tennessee, she enjoys reading an eclectic collection of fiction novels, working out at Orange Theory, scuba diving in Belize, and shooting sporting clays from time to time. Kym resides in Knoxville and also has a secondary home in Nashville that she enjoys on her visits to the Music City. Everyone at the Insurors of Tennessee is looking forward to working with Kym in 2024 to make this 131st year of the association one of the best as we serve our members and associate members. We have much to accomplish in 2024. u

Insurefest 2023 Wrap Up and Photo Gallery Insurefest 2023 held at the Downtown Marriott in Knoxville was a great success this year! Thank you to everyone who worked to make it happen and to all those who attended. We had a great turnout where attendees were fully engaged and participated in many of the events we had to offer. Every year one of the most important takeaways from the annual convention comes from the opportunity for members to learn the latest information about the state of our industry and what is on the horizon relative to insurance and technology. With the speed of change in our business, this information becomes more important as agencies work to adapt to a rapidly changing marketplace. Thank you to our guest speakers for taking time out of your busy schedules to share your expertise with the members. The InsureFest Tradeshow was once again an important avenue for displaying the insurance products and services available to help propel agency success. We appreciate the organizations who participated in the tradeshow once again this year. The work you do is critical to our industry. An overwhelming 69.3% of Americans have put their insurance policies under review, with nearly half (45.8%) citing rising premiums as the catalyst, according to a new survey released this week by Trusted Choice®—the national consumer brand representing the Big “I." The survey also found that one-third of Americans are unaware that external economic factors, such as an increase in extreme weather, soaring reinsurance costs, supply chain disruptions and inflation, are affecting insurance rates.

"Consumers are grappling with increased insurance costs, yet many of them don't realize the extent that economic pressures and market dynamics are affecting their rates," said Charles Symington, Big "I" president & CEO.
"We acknowledge that the current environment is prompting consumers to opt for higher deductibles, switch coverage solely based on cost, or even go uninsured. However, these are not often the wisest or most effective strategies," agreed Kevin Brandt, executive director of Trusted Choice.
As premiums increase, Americans are reviewing their insurance policies and evaluating their options. As many as 46% of Americans have considered or have already taken a higher deductible to save money on insurance while 22% have considered going uninsured to save money. Also, a majority—83%—would switch insurance providers for lower premiums, while 59% would switch for better coverage.
Trusted Choice recommends that individuals stay in touch with their agents not only to ask questions to assess their current coverage, but also to inquire about current market dynamics, evolving premium pricing, and seek guidance on optimizing their insurance portfolios. This proactive approach helps consumers make informed decisions aligned with their unique needs and financial goals.
Despite the need for a consultative approach to insurance, only 56% of consumers buy insurance through an agent compared to 36% who buy online.
"It's crucial for consumers to ask the right questions, engage in close collaboration with their independent insurance agents, and learn about what's affecting their coverage," Brandt said. “At this time, it's more important than ever to work with an agent who offers choice, solutions, and advocates for their clients so policyholders can be empowered to make informed decisions to chart a path forward." u

Closing Out Year 130 I hope you all are enjoying the holiday season with your colleagues, families, and friends. It truly is a special time of the year filled with good cheer, fellowship, and meaningful times of celebration depending on your faith traditions. Happy Holidays to you all! It was great seeing so many of you at the 130th InsureFest in Knoxville just a few weeks ago. At a time when most of us are moving through our work weeks quickly to meet the needs of clients and the various constituencies we serve, it was enjoyable to “pump the brakes” and spend time together during the conference. Insurefest or the Annual Convention as it was known for years is an important part of maintaining the culture, relationships, and the continuity of this association. It is the capstone event each year where we gather to learn, grow, relax, and make decisions that perpetuate the Insurors of Tennessee for the next year and beyond. Throughout this year, I gave thought to this being the 130th Anniversary and the significance of the moment in our long history. This association has navigated through all manner of obstacles over these 130 years on the vision, strength, and talent of our members. Today, our association is fortunate to be comprised of consummate insurance professionals and leaders who are the guarantors of the future of the Insurors of Tennessee and a healthy insurance industry in this state. It has been an honor serving as your President this year working with the Board of Directors, Ron Travis and the Insurors staff to advance the development of the association and to meet the rapidly evolving needs of our members. During this “hard market”, which many of our younger members have nevThe Tennessee Insuror
er encountered before, the challenges have been many. At the same time technology in our industry is evolving at a rapid pace to the point it where it is sometimes “difficult to get your head around.” All the while, mergers, acquisitions, and industry consolidation continue changing the dynamics of the marketplace at the macro and micro levels. Staffing and talent scarcity is a continuing challenge for insurance agencies and companies as is the case with many other industry segments. We have made much progress on many of these issues and others in 2023. Yet, the work continues. The good news is that you belong to an association that is working to help you meet these challenges at the state and national level. One of the most essential elements of what we do as a group centers around legislative affairs and advocacy work to make sure our voices are heard at the state and national levels. Trey Moore, Government Affairs Consultant, and members of our Legislative Affairs Committee do an exceptional job monitoring pending legislation and weighing in as necessary to enhance or in some cases oppose bills under consideration. At the national level, “Big I” legislative staff members are ever present in the halls of Congress providing overwatch to make sure our interests are understood by elected leaders. Your involvement in the process is critical to ensure a healthy and vibrant insurance indus-
try that can serve consumers and members of the public. As you all know 2024 is an election year, so I encourage you to make contributions to InsurPACTN at the state level and InsurPac at the national level. The ability to support worthy candidates who will listen to and understand our positions on administrative rules and pending legislation is vital. So, please make sure you do your part to support these efforts. We cannot afford to be complacent in this election year. To use a football analogy, the handoff of my responsibilities to incoming President Kym Clevenger has gone very smoothly. Kym has been an integral part of this association for many years, serving on the Board of Directors and before that as a long-time member of the association. She knows and understands the insurance business. I look forward to seeing her lead the association forward in 2024 and all that she and the board will accomplish on behalf of members. In closing, thank you to my fellow board members for their service this year, to the talented staff of the association for the work they put in every day, and to all members who make the Insurors of Tennessee one of the most successful and effective trade associations in the state and in the nation. u

Your Big "I" Big 'I' Submits Congressional Testimony on Hard Market BY Raaed Haddad, Big “I" Director of Federal Government Affairs This week, the U.S. House Financial Services Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance held a hearing, “The Factors Influencing the High Cost of Insurance for Consumers." The hearing focused on insurance markets, particularly recent developments that have led to higher costs and lower availability for property and casualty insurance. Topics discussed included the overall increased cost of insurance, current challenges in individual state markets, and the impact of federal and international regulatory developments. The hearing clearly illustrated that the insurance industry is a vital component to the U.S. economy and provides financial protections for millions of American consumers and businesses. One of the main themes during the hearing was the importance of the nearly 150-year-old state-based insurance regulatory system. Since the enactment of the McCarran-Ferguson Act, insurance carriers have been subject to comprehensive state regulation for both the products they sell and the financial solvency of their operations. In both instances, insurers are subject to intense scrutiny regarding their pricing, risk modeling, and use of historical and analytical information. Also noted, were the misguided policies by regulators attempting to add new requirements that are increasingly incompatible with how insurance carriers operate in a solvent manner.

According to a recent McKinsey estimate, in 2021, rising prices contributed to an approximately $30 billion increase in loss costs over and above historical loss trends. The Big “I" supports several of the legislative proposals discussed in the hearing, including a resolution introduced by Rep. Warren Davidson (R-Ohio), Chairman of the Housing and Insurance Subcommittee. The resolution affirms Congress' support for the McCarran-Ferguson Act and its state-based regulatory system for the business of insurance as the law of the United States. Additional proposals discussed include restricting the size, scope and authority of the Federal Insurance Office (FIO), housed
within the Department of the Treasury. The Big “I" submitted written testimony in support of the committee's efforts to address the current property insurance crisis, and its impact on consumers. The testimony emphasized several key areas that are important to independent insurance agents and posed some potential solutions to alleviate pressure on the market. Those included fostering productive state regulatory environments, cracking down on lawsuit abuse, increasing risk mitigation efforts, considering a narrow federal reinsurance backstop and increasing consumer transparency. As Congress continues to discuss the insurance industry, the Big “I" will continue to advocate for independent insurance agents and provide updates . u

This Association Will Be There It was great to gather in Knoxville at the Downtown Marriott October 21-24 for Insurefest 2023 as we celebrated the 130th Anniversary of this historic association. This year the convention offered attendees excellent opportunities to hear from experts in our industry on topics ranging from the resolution of coverage issues and claims disputes to the latest information about InsureTech. We had a very enjoyable dinner on Sunday night where special guest Congressman Mark Green of Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District addressed attendees at the dinner. The association’s Annual Business Meeting, required by our charter, on Tuesday morning was informative and productive as we affirmed our newest class of Board Members and our incoming President. Starting with the UT vs. Alabama Football Game Watch Party on Saturday, we enjoyed several events to relax and unwind from the rigors of our business including a TopGolf outing and a cruise on a luxury yacht on the Tennessee River. There was something for everyone to enjoy at this year’s event. Based on feedback we received, the convention was well received by most everyone. It Has Been An Honor To Serve You BY John Brock, Young Agents President
I always like to take some time at the end of each year to reflect on what has shaped the past 11 months but also what has set a precedent for the year ahead. Serving as the Young Agent Director for 2023 was an opportunity that I cherished every step of the way. Having the honor to serve amongst the Board of Directors exposed me to how strong and committed our Association leadership has been over the years. I was able to connect and engage with many business and community leaders who take their time to stay involved and guide this Association. Participating in our quarterly meetings was an eye-opener to see just how much intention and focus is going towards our entire membership base of independent agents. It is very encouraging to know that our Association is staying true to its purpose and that the many people involved are passionate about the future ahead for independent agents. Leading the Young Agents in 2023 provided me with the necessary challenges to build upon the momentum from the previous year. One of the biggest achievements for our Young Agents was more of a behind-the-scenes development that I know will pay off greatly for our future plans amongst the Young Agent demographic. This past year, I was able to lead an effort to expand our committee with new chair positions as well as institute a more formal process for the emerging leadership of the Young Agent Committee. We now have established positions of Vice-Chair, Secretary, as well as Collegiate Relations, Technology, Events, Membership Development, and InsurPAC. These positions will advance the Associations purpose to the Young Agent Committee so that they can become more engaged with our Association as well as learn the importance of our Association much earlier in their careers! We also held an in-person Young Agent Com26
mittee meeting in October and invited some of our Board of Directors to observe our discussions about planning for the year ahead. In March, the Agency Growth Conference was held in my city, the scenic Chattanooga! I am very thankful for those of you who attended and spent your time learning, connecting, and engaging with our association in the place that I call home! Aside from leading the committee, I am very thankful for the Association to allow me the opportunity to attend the Big I Fall Leadership Conference in Grand Rapids, MI. Within the conference was a ‘track’ of content specifically designed for Young Agents across the country. This track is called the ‘Young Agents Leadership Institute’ a.k.a. YALI. At YALI, I was able to learn from some industry speakers as well as connect with fellow Young Agent leaders from other Big I state associations. This brought me valuable information with regard to Young Agent initiatives that we are working on for 2024. Young Agents will see several new and exciting opportunities in 2024! Stay tuned through our many communication platforms! (Email bulletins, social media feeds, Insurors website, etc.) I want to thank all of our members for their time and participation with Young Agents in 2023! Without your continued support of our Association, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to serve in this role. I encourage all members (and specifically Young Agents) to get involved with the Association. Weather its supporting our advocacy efforts, taking your continuing education credits, or utilizing the many products and services offered by our state association and the Big I. Government & Legal Update State Advocacy Update: Schools, New Laws and the Economic Loss Doctrine Governor Pitches ‘Statewide Universal School Choice’ With the Tennessee General Assembly set to reconvene in January, state leaders have begun to outline their priorities for the upcoming legislative session. This includes Governor Bill Lee who is entering his sixth year as Tennessee’s CEO. On November 28, the governor publicly unveiled his Education Freedom Scholarship Act (EFSA), a state program to provide K-12 students in Tennessee up to $7,075 each to attend qualifying private, parochial, or home schools. The program will initially make 20,000 scholarships available, with 10,000 reserved for students from families less than 300 percent of the federal poverty level (i.e. $90,000 for a family of four). The remaining 10,000 scholarships would be available to any student regardless of income. As proposed, the EFSA would expand the program to any student beginning in the 2025-26 school year.

The new proposal would build on the governor’s 2019 Education Savings Account (ESA) program which created funding for 5,000 students in Memphis-Shelby County Schools and Metro Nashville Schools. The ESA program was amended in 2023 to include Hamilton Co.
“We all agree that every child should have an opportunity for a quality education that meets their needs, and I strongly believe the ultimate decision should be made by parents, not government bureaucrats,” said House Speaker Cameron Sexton. “This scholarship opportunity is funded outside the current K-12 funding model, TISA, which means dollars do not follow students. We all know a quality education changes one’s life and reduces poverty and crime within communities. In the future in Tennessee, students and parents will be in control of their education success, without the government limiting their opportunities.”
The governor was joined at the public announcement by Lt. Gov. Randy McNally, House Speaker Cameron Sexton, and Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson and House Majority Leader William Lamberth have spoken publicly in support of the plan. Democrats have widely panned the proposal.
Under the plan, funding could be used to pay tuition or other qualifying education related expenses such as uniform fees, technology, and transportation costs at private, home or parochial schools. Notably, Sexton voted against the 2019 ESA bill and its 2023 expansion, but he told reporters that he supports the governor’s newest proposal, in part, because as proposed, it would not rely on existing K-12 funding sources to pay for the program.
New Laws Become Effective January 1, 2024 A few of the bills passed in Tennessee's 2023 Legislative Session are set to go into effect on January 1st, 2024, including the Tennessee Paid Family Leave Insurance Act , signed into law last March, becomes effective at the first of the year. The law amends current code to allow insurances companies to offer paid family leave, which employers could then purchase for their employees. The insurance is voluntary, and the new law does not require or guarantee paid family leave for any Tennesseans. It was promoted and lobbied by Unum.
At 20,000 available slots, the program would cost the state up to $141.5 million in its first year. Lee said Tuesday that the program would be funded by a separate scholarship account and would not impact the current funding structure for K-12 education. “A high-quality education has the power to change the trajectory of a child’s life, and there’s no question that now is the time to make school choice a reality for every Tennessee family,” said Gov. Bill Lee. “Tennessee’s Education Freedom Scholarships will empower parents with the freedom to choose the right education for their child, while also giving them a say in how their taxpayer dollars are invested. Other Notable Laws Effective Jan. 1 • Increased penalties for distracted driving, raising the penalty points drivers face if caught using a phone or similar device while driving. For drivers 18 and younger, a second violation of the law, known as the Eddie Conrad Act, will result in seven points being charged to their driving record. For adult drivers over 18, the first and second violations of the law will carry a four-point penalty, with a five-point penalty going toward third and subsequent violations. • All ignition interlock devices, breathalyzers that prevent users from starting their vehicles after drinking alcohol, must contain GPS technology if installed in or after 2024. 31
Government & Legal Update TN Supreme Court Upholds Work Comp Atty Fees, Declines to Extend Economic Loss Doctrine The Tennessee Supreme Court upheld a $50,500 attorney fee award, almost double the compensation benefits, in favor of a truck driver injured in 2016 and terminated by his employer in 2018. The case was a complex legal battle involving denied disability payments and alleged retaliatory termination despite compliance with work duties. The legal proceedings highlighted the extensive efforts by the plaintiff's legal team to prove his entitlement to benefits, contrasting with the lack of contradictory evidence from the employer. The case stands out due to its intricate timeline and the employer's initial agreement to pay benefits and penalties, which didn't exempt them from a subsequent determination of wrongful denial. Plaintiff's termination seemed influenced by potential miscommunication, where his return to work after medical improvements might not have been communicated effectively to the employer, leading to his unexpected dismissal. This case's significance lies in the rarity of such victories for claimants' attorneys in Tennessee, where legislative changes in 2014 reduced benefits and limited attorney fees, resulting in fewer successful appeals for injured workers.

In September, the Court decided that the economic loss doctrine, which restricts recovering additional damages under tort law for solely economic losses, should stay limited to product liability cases and not apply to service contracts.

The Court reinstated a jury verdict favoring a construction subcontractor, Commercial Painting Company, against the general contractor, Weitz Company, LLC, in a dispute over a retirement community construction. Commercial Painting alleged misrepresentation and wrongful refusal to pay for extra work. The Court ruled that while the economic loss doctrine applies in product cases, it shouldn't extend to service contracts. Justice Sharon Lee dissented, favoring extension of the doctrine to service contracts, aiming to delineate between contract and tort law boundaries.

The Hill Newspaper Names Big ‘I’ President & CEO Among Top Lobbyists BY Sue Nester, Big “I" Vice President of Communications The Hill, a prominent political newspaper, has once again named Charles Symington, Big “I" president & CEO, among the top trade association lobbyists in Washington, D.C. this year. As in previous years, the Big “I" was the only property & casualty insurance agent or broker group to make the list. In its announcement yesterday morning, The Hill stated the criteria for the recognition. “The federal lobbying bench is deep, with more than 12,500 actively lobbying so far in 2023, and not everyone on this list is a registered lobbyist," the newspaper reported with its list. “These impactful advocates stand out for the results they've delivered for their clients, companies, trade associations and advocacy groups in the nation's capital." Company Briefs continued RLI Announces Retirement of Jonathan Michael as Chairman of the Board RLI Corp. announced today that Jonathan E. Michael, Chairman of the Board, will retire from the Board of Directors at the conclusion of the 2024 Annual Meeting of Shareholders in May, consistent with the Company’s established succession plan. Michael, who retired as the Company’s Chief Executive Officer in 2021, has more than 40 years of service with RLI. During Michael’s 20-year tenure as CEO, the company significantly diversified its product portfolio, while delivering consistent top line growth and achieving 20 consecutive years of underwriting profit. The Board elected David B. Duclos to serve as Non-Executive Chairman upon Michael’s retirement. Duclos has served as a Director since 2017, and currently serves as the lead independent director. He has 45 years of global reinsurance and insurance industry experience, which included roles as CEO of QBE North America and XL Insurance.

Arlington/Roe Encouraging EFT Government studies show since 1993, the number of paper checks in circulation is down 82%. However, check fraud is on
the rise. Over the last five years, this type of fraud has doubled to an estimated $24 billion dollars. The reason is simple: it is a low-tech crime committed with easily obtainable supplies that are readily available. Arlington/Roe has been advocating and encouraging payments made to their agents for commissions and/or return premiums via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) for the past few years, and over 80% of agency partners have agreed. EFT makes payments to agents quick and secure, thus avoiding the distribution of paper checks through the postal system. The company uses EFT to remit any payments, commissions, or returns due to agencies. It DOES NOT serve as a mechanism to sweep or withdraw any monies from agents. This is a one-way street from the company to their agents. Effective 1/1/2024, they are asking for banking information from any agency partner who has not already done so in order to receive monthly remittances. To mitigate fraud exposure, paper checks will now only be processed and distributed once per year, in December. They feel that the financial environment has evolved to the point where EFT payments are the expected method of payment rather than the exception. u

Nikki Reeder • Boyle Insurance Agency • Memphis We are pleased to introduce you to Nikki Reeder, CBIA. Nikki is a Commercial Customer Service Representative with Boyle Insurance in Memphis. She has been employed with the agency for a little over two years now and is enjoying collaborating with producers, clients, and insurance companies to provide clients with the right insurance and risk management solutions for their organizations. Initially, Nikki worked in personal lines at Boyle Insurance drawing upon prior experience and quickly moved into commercial lines after about nine months with the agency. Nikki has worked in the insurance industry for about 4 years now, first entering the business with a direct insurance writer as an insurance producer. For a short stint, she also worked as a sales representative selling pre-arranged funeral services for a local funeral home prior to joining Boyle. Prior to deciding to make a career change into the insurance business, Nikki worked in the restaurant and hospitality industry in the Memphis area. Along the way, she earned dual associate degrees in food and beverage management and Culinary Arts from a local community college. Nikki’s career in the restaurant and hospitality world extended over eighteen years. She characterized her career as being fast paced requiring attention to detail, creativity, organization, and a healthy dose of determination. Clearly, it is a tribute to Nikki’s can-do attitude and endurance that she was able to successfully navigate the challenges of the restaurant and hospitality business over the years. While she did enjoy her experience in the industry, she was simply ready for a change. It is noteworthy that many of the skills and attributes Nikki developed in her prior career apply today to her position as a commercial customer service representative for Boyle. Once she learned about insurance products, insurance principles, and the services associated with the delivery of insurance services in an independent agency she was on her way. Of course, studying, doing the required course work, and having a strong mentor to shepherd her development was critical as well. Nikki is proof positive that insurance professionals came translate successfully from many diverse backgrounds. When asked who has been instrumental in her career development, she quickly says Cindi Gresham, former President of the agency. Acting as a mentor, Cindi took Nikki under 48
her wing, sharing her wealth of knowledge and experience in the insurance business. She generously offered Nikki the benefit or her years of service in the agency and as a Board member of the Insurors of Tennessee. Nikki also credits Cindi with pushing her to do more than she thought possible. Even though Cindi is retired from Boyle, Nikki says she will call her from time to time for advice. Another person Nikki sees as a mentor and instrumental in her life is her mother, Debbie Reeder. Nikki says she is always there for her as a sounding board and encouraging her to always do her best personally and professionally. When Nikki is asked what she enjoys most about her career in insurance she says it is the variety the business offers, the fast pace, and the ever-changing landscape of the insurance business. She describes the insurance business as fluid and always offering new challenges. Nikki says there is always something new to learn and it keeps the job fresh and interesting. Nikki is very involved with the Young Agents of Tennessee serving as the Events Committee Chair in 2023. She enjoys spending time with her peers in the Memphis area and across the state sharing experiences and exchanging ideas. Nikki is also involved with Women in Insurance Now (WINs) and thinks the group is a key place for establishing professional relationships and building mutual support. Away from work Nikki stays busy with her family including husband Brandon, and two sons Connor, age 14, and PatConnor Patrick rick, age 7. Connor enjoys running and takes part in his middle school’s cross-country and track team. In fact, Nikki serves as a cross-country coach at Connor’s school. Connor often enters running events and is even training for a 10K at some point soon. Her son Patrick enjoys spending time with the family on camping and hiking expeditions. The entire family enjoys getting fresh air and the great outdoors at every opportunity. Your Big "I" 2023 Property & Casualty Combined Ratio Forecasted to Deteriorate to 103.8 BY Will Jones, IA editor-in-chief The 2023 net combined ratio for the property & casualty industry is forecast to be 103.8, according to the latest underwriting projections by actuaries at the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I) and Milliman.
In personal auto, Porfilio forecasts premium growth of 11% in 2023 as rate increases start to exceed loss trends, allowing the 2023 net combined ratio to improve incrementally to 110.5 from 112.2 in 2022.
The projection is worse than the 102.2 combined ratio predicted earlier this year, which is, in part, due to severe convective storm losses being the highest in decades, the report said. Also, hard markets continue with 2023 net written premium growth forecast at 8.3%.
“Costlier replacement parts and low inventories are contributing to current and future loss pressures," he said, adding, “Unless replacement cost begins to decrease materially— which is not currently forecast—we project personal auto to remain at an underwriting loss through 2025."
The projections were announced in a quarterly report, “Insurance Economics and Underwriting Objections: A Forward View," and the findings were presented in a webinar. Michel Léonard, chief economist and data scientist at Triple-I, discussed key macroeconomic trends impacting the p&c industry results, including inflation, increasing interest rates and overall economic underlying growth.
For homeowners, Porfilio noted that catastrophe losses in the first half of 2023 were elevated and that approximately 70% of those losses were in the homeowners line. “For 2023, the net combined ratio is forecast at 110.9, 6.2 pts worse than 2022."
He identified the top risk scenarios for 2024 as geopolitics, weakening employment and gross domestic product (GDP) contraction. “The Fed may also keep increasing rates into 2025, pushing down home and auto insurance underlying economic growth," he said. Another area of concern, Léonard said, is p&c replacement costs. Between 2020 and 2023, replacement costs increased an average of 45%, while inflation for the overall U.S. economy increased 15% within that same period. “Increases in p&c replacement costs should continue to slow down faster than overall inflation over the next three years," he said. “However, it will take 10 years of normal inflation for insurance replacement costs to process pandemic-related increases." Meanwhile, Dale Porfilio, chief insurance officer at Triple-I, discussed the overall p&c industry underwriting projections. “We forecast personal lines to improve each year from 2023 through 2025, but still lag behind strong underwriting profitability in commercial lines," he said. He also noted that the improvements are expected to result in “the overall p&c industry returning to a small underwriting profit in 2025." The Tennessee Insuror
Lastly, Jason B. Kurtz, a principal and consulting actuary at Milliman, said that commercial property, general liability, and workers compensation continued to be bright spots for the industry, while commercial auto continues to be troubled. For commercial property, the 2023 net combined ratio is forecast at 91.6, nearly identical to 2022. “Hard market conditions continue into 2023, most notably in catastrophe-prone regions," Kurtz said. “We expect premium growth to moderate through 2025." But for commercial auto, underwriting losses continue. Direct incurred loss ratios in the first half of 2023 were at the highest in at least 15 years. “There will be a continued need for rate to improve the combined ratio results," Kurtz said. “We are forecasting the 2023 combined ratio at 106.7, 2024 at 103.4 and 2025 at 102.7." However, Kurtz noted that the general liability 2023 net combined ratio forecast of 96.9 falls between 2021 and 2022 actual results. He also said that premium growth is forecast to moderate in 2023-2025 as a result of the recent improved underwriting performance and lower GDP growth expectations. Turning to workers comp, Kurtz noted that the 2023 net combined ratio forecast of 90.6 continues the string of underwriting profits. “Favorable results are forecast to continue through 2025, with premium growth 2.7% for 2023, 1.9% for 2024 and 1.9% for 2025," he said. u 53
