Norfleet Anthony is the president of S.N. Anthony, Inc. in Ripley and serves as President. Born and raised in Ripley, after high school he attended the University of Tennessee. He began his insurance career by joining the family agency in 1982. He furthered his industry education by attending the Allstate, Travelers and USF&G producer schools. He formerly served on our Board as a Vice President of Region I and before that, Director of Region I. In addition to his service with Insurors, Norfleet is a member and lay leader of First United Methodist Church Ripley, a District Trustee for the Mississippi River District of the United Methodist Church, Co-Chair of the Pension & Benefits Board for the Memphis Conference of the United Methodist Church and Member and Past President of the Ripley Rotary Club. He and his wife Amy have four children, Sy Anthony, Katherine Anthony Leake, Rachel Harpole and Elizabeth Harpole. Norfleet also has two grandsons, Jackson Henry Leake and Hudson Franklin Leake.

Bobby Sain is President of Bolivar Insurance & Real Estate and serves as Vice President of Region I. Bobby graduated from Bolivar Central High School and attended University of Mississippi. He later received an Associate Degree from Jackson State Community College. After JSCC, he went to work with his father at Bolivar Insurance & Real Estate. Bobby attended and completed several insurance educational classes including Hartford Insurance School for personal and commercial insurance, Hartford, CT. Bobby has always been active in his community where he enjoyed coaching baseball and supporting all Bolivar sports. In his spare time, he loves playing golf and music. He served as one of the youngest City Councilman in Bolivar at age 21 and in 2005 Bobby ran and was elected Mayor, City of Bolivar. In his term, the city received a grant which helped renovate and bring new businesses to downtown Bolivar. Bobby is presently Vice-Chair of Bolivar Downtown Development Corporation. He is also a board member at Western Mental Health Board of Trustees. Bobby and his wife DaJuan have 3 children, Blake, Chase and Shelby. They are members of First Baptist Church in Bolivar.

Matt Swallows, CIC, CRM is the president of the Swallows Agency in Livingston, Cookeville and Smithville, and serves as Vice President of Region II and President-elect . He earned a degree in Finance from Tennessee Tech University and started his insurance career with Aetna in 1999. In 2001 he started with Swallows Agency, and has since earned his CIC designation (2007) and his CRM designation (2010). In addition to his work with Insurors, Matt served as the Mayor of Cookeville from 2010-14, and has served on the Cookeville Regional Medical Center Board of Directors and the Cookeville/Putnam County Chamber. He is the current Chairman of the Putnam County YMCA. He is married to Kelly Swallows, who is the VP of Operations for the agency, and they have two children, Channing and Xavier.

Kym Clevenger, CPCU, CACW is the president of The Assurance Center in Knoxville and serves as the Vice President of Region III. She is a Knoxville native, and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Biology, Zoology and Medical Technology from The University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She is also a Registered Nurse. She joined the agency in 1996 and earned her CIC in 2001, CPCU in 2007 and CAWC in 2013. Outside of her work with Insurors, Kym is a former president of the Associated Construction Women, and enjoys reading, working out, traveling, scuba diving, and sporting clays. She and her husband, Donald Erdman III, live in Knoxville with their dog Betty.

Cindi Gresham, CIC is the president of Boyle Insurance Agency in Memphis and serves as the IIABA National Director for Tennessee. After moving to Memphis from her hometown of Columbus, Ohio, she graduated from Overton High before attending Memphis State University. She started her insurance career in 1973 with George Holley Insurance, then moved to Carruthers Harris Agency in 1979. In 1987 she started with Boyle and has been there ever since. In addition to her work with Insurors, Cindi is a supporter of various senior and youth organizations, University of Memphis athletics and formerly served as president of the Insurors of Memphis local board. Cindi has two sons, Brad and Kyle, and six grandchildren. She attends Collierville UMC and resides in Collierville with her husband, Rocky.

John McInturff III, ARM is the president and owner at McInturff, Milligan & Brooks in Greeneville and serves as Treasurer. He is a Past President of Insurors and has served on the Board in several roles. A Greeneville native, John graduated from Greeneville High School in 1981. He attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, earning his B.S. in Business Administration in 1985. He began his insurance career with USF&G in 1986 and joined Bennett and Edwards in 1988 where he later became president. In 2006 the Tri-State Claims division of Bennett and Edwards merged with McInturff, Milligan & Brooks to form the current agency.

John’s contributions to Insurors include serving as Young Agents Chair, Director of Region III, VP of Region III and Secretary. In addition to his involvement with Insurors, John is a past President of the Kingsport Jaycees, past president of the HVFC Soccer Club and has been involved with Junior Achievement of Tri-Cities, the Kingsport Rotary-Sunshine Club, and is a member of First Presbyterian Church. He and his wife Tonya reside in Kingsport and have two children, Lauren and Lindsey.

Richard Whitley, CIC is a principal agent with McDaniel-Whitley in Memphis and serves as Secretary. He previously served as Director of Region I. He is a native of Covington and earned his BBA from Ole Miss in 1989.

After working in banking, he entered the insurance industry in 1997. He credits his time as a commercial loan officer with giving him immense insight into owning a business. Additional professional education for Richard includes earning his CIC designation in 2000. Organizations he has previously been active with include the Insurors of Memphis, Collierville Rotary Club, West Tennessee Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors and Construction Financial Management Association. Richard is a twenty-five year volunteer for the FedEx St. Jude Invitational, Memphis’s PGA Tour tournament. He and his wife Michelle have been married for over 20 years and have two daughters, Caroline and Emmy.

Cy Young is a principal agent at both Young-Hughes Insurance and Haven Insurance Partners and serves as Director of Region I. Cy grew up in Alamo, TN, where he had been working in the Insurance industry and serving the community since graduating from Mississippi State in 2004. Having worked in the Insurance industry for over 15 years, Cy understands the need for an agency that is focused, forward-thinking, and always puts the client first. His experience as an independent agent continues to grow knowledge and skills to break the mold of traditional agencies and best serve the community. Cy is married to Jordan Leigh, and they have one daughter, Eliza, and a mini golden doodle, Stella. This State fan has converted his University of Mississippi Rebel wife, and together they enjoy cheering on the Bulldogs with their young daughter. In his free time Cy enjoys spending time with his family, grilling out with friends or on the golf course.

Jamie Williams, CIC, CRM is the agency manager for Hardin County Bank Insurance Agency in Savannah and serves as a Director of Region I. He is a native of Savannah and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Union University. In addition to his work with Insurors, he is involved in his local church and is a member of the River City Kiwanis club. He and his wife, Lauren, have been married for 15 years and have 2 children, Lexie and Logan. Jamie enjoys hunting and golf as well as spending time with family.

Jamie Williams Director, Region I Eric Collison, CIC, CRM is a vice president for Kemmons Wilson Insurance Group in Memphis and serves as a Director of Region I. He joined the agency in July 2015 as the insurance sales manager and is currently focused on the Hospitality Program development throughout the country. Eric went to KWIG from GCM Insurance and before that 8 years at Liberty Mutual working throughout the southeast in commercial sales and personal lines sales management. His duties include development and mentoring of the sales force, marketing campaigns and initiatives, developing and fostering carrier relationships, and identifying new profitable areas for growth within the agency. He is a graduate of Mississippi State University and earned his Certified Insurance Counselor designation (CIC) in 2008. He enjoys golfing, hunting, and attending sporting events. Eric grew up in Starkville, Mississippi. After living in several cities throughout the southeast he moved back to the Memphis area with his wife Rivers and their three daughters.

Chip Piper is a vice president for Powell & Meadows and serves as a Director of Region I. Chip started working at Powell & Meadows after graduating from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 2009. He has enjoyed working with and learning from his father Phillip Piper. In 2017, Chip became Vice President and Minority Partner at the agency. Chip enjoys his job for many reasons but mainly because the insurance industry is constantly evolving which presents new opportunities and challenges. He enjoys finding the best solution for each customer's situation and helping them grow their business or protect their family. Chip and Phillip look to continue Powell & Meadows 127 year history well into the future. Chip is married to Stefani Piper and they have twins, Ella Lee and Cohen.

Paul Steele, CIC, CRM is the president of Martin & Zerfoss in Nashville and serves as a Director of Region II. Born and raised in Nashville, he has been in the insurance business with the agency for the past 16 years. He is a past Young Agents Director, past Insurors of Nashville President and the current Board Chair for The Family Center, a local not-for-profit. Paul is a graduate of Vanderbilt University. He is married to Jenny and they have three daughters, Sophie, Ella and Helen. His hobbies include rooting for the Titans, Predators and Vandy. He considers himself a beer nerd and family man.

Reno Benson is the executive vice president of Anderson Benson Insurance & Risk Management in Nashville, and serves as a Director of Region II. He is a Nashville native and attended Vanderbilt University. His insurance career began in 1977 with Continental Insurance, and in 1983 he joined Polk & Sullivan Group in Nashville as a producer for commercial lines and surety. During his tenure with Polk & Sullivan Group and its successor organizations – first Synaxis Group and later First Horizon Insurance – Reno assumed a number of managerial roles.

He was most recently a senior VP of First Horizon Insurance before co-founding Anderson Benson Insurance in 2012. In addition to his work with Insurors, Reno also enjoys spending time with his family and currently serves on the boards of several community groups. He and his wife, Katie, have two sons, William and Alex, and a daughter, Murray. William and his wife, Suzanne, have one daughter, Hayward.

Bill Oldham, CIC is an owner and principal of Oldham and Cox Insurance in Knoxville and serves as a Director of Region III. He has been in the insurance industry for 23 years. After graduating from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Bill Oldham started his career at Travelers Insurance, then shortly after became the owner of Oldham and Cox Insurance, LLC. He is a previous member of the Penn National Insurance Agents Advisory Board, Grange Insurance Advisory Board, and the PIA of Tennessee Board. In 2015, his agency merged with Steve Cox Insurance Agency to form the current agency. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Knoxville and attends Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church. He and his wife, Amee, have been married for 24 years and have a daughter, Natalee. He loves the outdoors, whether it is water skiing, mountain biking or deep sea fishing. He is an avid runner and has completed four marathons – Chicago, Marine Corps, New York and Knoxville, as well as several half marathons.

Cindy Widener Winn, CPS, CIC CBIA is the president and agency owner of Widener Insurance Agency in Johnson City since 1995 and serves as a Director of Region III. She was born and raised in Johnson City and earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Immediately after college she obtained her CPA. In addition to her work with Insurors, she is active in her community including serving as Past President of JC Rotary Club. Cindy enjoys golf, reading, travel and collecting wine. Cindy and her husband Sterling Winn have been married for 26 years and have two children, Elizabeth, who joined the agency after graduating from UTK, and Michael, a Junior at North East Tech State. The family also has a Biewer terrier named Patches. Cindy also helps care for her mother, Hersel Widener, who is now 95 years old.

Tim Goss, CIC is the president of Goss Insurance Agency in Chattanooga, and serves as a Director of Region II. Tim is a seasoned insurance professional with over 40 years of industry experience. He holds a CIC designation and is both president and founder of Goss Insurance Agency, established in 1985. Tim resides in Hixson but can often be found cycling on the roads in Chattanooga or traveling to Mexico with his wife Krista for mission work with villages in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Matt Felgendreher is executive vice president and principal of WC Dillon Company and serves as Young Agents Director. A native of Lexington, Kentucky, and a 2006 graduate of Rhodes College, Matt began his business career as a property and casualty insurance producer in Memphis, Tennessee before joining Insight Risk Management / WC Dillon Company in August 2011. He combines strong technical insurance knowledge with the business acumen to fully interpret and mitigate a client’s exposure. Matt is a member of the Phoenix Club of Nashville, providing fundraising support for the Boys & Girls Club of Middle Tennessee. He is also a past board president of the Insurors of Nashville and past board member of the Nashville Humane Association. He enjoys running, golfing and rooting for the Kentucky Wildcats with his wife Tori by his side.

Bob is a co-founder and principal agent of McIntire & Associates Insurance and Real Estate in Cleveland and serves as Immediate Past President. He graduated from Lee College in Cleveland with a degree in Business Administration and he and his father founded their agency in 1981. He previously served on the Board as a Director and VP of Region III. In addition to his work with Insurors, Bob serves as chairman of the Economic Development Council for Cleveland/Bradley County, is a member of the Industrial Development Board of Cleveland/Bradley Co., a trustee for the Cleveland State Community College Foundation, and is the treasurer and a board member for Life Bridges Inc. Insurance and Risk Management Across the Cyber Landscape Perhaps now more than ever insurance agencies and brokers are more aware of the cybersecurity risks most organizations face today. Certainly, in the wake of a turbulent cyber liability renewal season insurance professionals have a keener understanding of the rapidly evolving cyber risk landscape.

From a pure insurance perspective, the depth and breadth of the challenge along with the complexity of the problem makes it difficult for underwriters to fully understand, predict and price the risk associated with technology assets, data and privacy coupled with a company’s cybersecurity posture in general. This challenge is likely to continue into the foreseeable future.

Indeed, no organization large or small is immune from ransomware, denial of service, malware injection or other cyberattacks. The perpetrators range from lone wolf hackers, to organized crime syndicates to sophisticated state sponsors of cyberattacks. In fact, as this column is being written the United States Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Agency, responsible for coordinating the nations cyber defense with the private sector, is issuing strong warnings to organizations.

While a strong cyber insurance policy is important in managing and mitigating cyber risk, there is no substitute for robust defense at the company and individual level. Organizations and individuals must persistently maintain a strong cyber defense posture.

Provided below is the recent warning provided by the U.S. Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Agency which provides a good look into the threat level and the steps organizations need to take to be ready in any circumstance. In short, as organizations, employees, and individuals, we need to harden our cyber defenses.

Implement Cybersecurity Measures Now to Protect Against Potential Critical Threats Source: U.S. Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency Every organization in the United States is at risk from cyber threats that can disrupt essential services and potentially result in impacts to public safety. Over the past year, cyber incidents have impacted many companies, non-profits, and other organizations, large and small, across multiple sectors of the economy.

Most recently, public and private entities in Ukraine have suffered a series of malicious cyber incidents, including website defacement and private sector reports of potentially destructive malware on their systems that could result in severe harm to critical functions.

Who has access to your hardware, software, network, cloud? To what extent?

Do you educate staff on email security? And remind them regularly?

One email can paralyze your whole system.

The identification of destructive malware is particularly alarming given that similar malware has been deployed in the past— e.g., NotPetya and WannaCry ransomware—to cause significant, widespread damage to critical infrastructure.

This CISA Insights is intended to ensure that senior leaders at every organization in the United States are aware of critical cyber risks and take urgent, near-term steps to reduce the likelihood and impact of a potentially damaging compromise. All organizations, regardless of sector or size, should immediately implement the steps outlined.

Reduce the likelihood of a damaging cyber intrusion • Validate that all remote access to the organization’s network and privileged or administrative access requires multi-factor authentication.

• Ensure that software is up to date, prioritizing updates that address known exploited vulnerabilities identified by CISA. • Confirm that the organization’s IT personnel have disabled all ports and protocols not essential for business purposes.

• If the organization is using cloud services, ensure that IT personnel have reviewed and implemented strong controls outlined in CISA's guidance.

• Sign up for CISA's free cyber hygiene services, including vulnerability scanning, to help reduce exposure to threats.

Take steps to quickly detect a potential intrusion • Ensure that cybersecurity/IT personnel are focused on identifying and quickly assessing any unexpected or unusual network behavior. Enable logging in order to better investigate issues or events.

Password strength and confidentiality is one more important key to keeping data private and systems secure.

Ensure that the organization is prepared to respond if an intrusion occurs • Designate a dedicated crisis-response team with main points of contact for a suspected cybersecurity incident and roles/ responsibilities within the organization, including technology, communications, legal and business continuity.

• Assure availability of key personnel; identify means to provide surge support for responding to an incident.

• Conduct a tabletop exercise to ensure that all participants understand their roles during an incident.

Maximize the organization's resilience to a destructive cyber incident • Test backup procedures to ensure that critical data can be rapidly restored if the organization is impacted by ransomware or a destructive cyberattack; ensure that backups are isolated from network connections.

• If using industrial control systems or operational technology, conduct a test of manual controls to ensure that critical functions remain operable if the organization’s network is unavailable or untrusted.

By implementing the steps above, all organizations can make near-term progress toward improving cybersecurity and resilience. In addition, while recent cyber incidents have not been attributed to specific actors, CISA urges cybersecurity/ IT personnel at every organization to review Understanding and Mitigating Russian State-Sponsored Cyber Threats to U.S. Critical Infrastructure. CISA recommends organizations visit StopRansomware.gov, a centralized, whole-of-government webpage providing ransomware resources and alerts.

• Confirm that the organization's entire network is protected by antivirus/antimalware software and that signatures in these tools are updated.

New Website for Insurors of Tennessee Members

For the past several months the Insurors of Tennessee has been busy working on the development of a new website designed to better support members, attract prospective members, and enhance the overall operations of the association.

By the time you read this article, the new website will be nearing its official launch date.

Today, between 40 to 60 percent of website visits occur on a smart phone or tablet, as opposed to a desktop computer or laptop. To address this trend, the new website is fully responsive meaning the site detects and adapts to the device you are viewing it on to create a better user experience relative to how the site displays and how you navigate the site on any device. This capability alone is a significant improvement over the previous site. In short, we intend for the new site to be feature rich and easy to use whether you are using your smart phone, table or desktop computer.

The site is also search engine optimized making it much easier for members and prospective members to find us on the web. Special attention has been paid to navigation structure to make it much easier for members to find and locate the information and services needed. From a cybersecurity 14

standpoint, the new website uses a number of security technologies to safeguard against cyberattacks and to protect member data and association information resources.

While the focus of the website is on the public facing elements of the website to better serve members, the new site also has several components that will assist with the administration of events, ongoing communications with members and the overall operations of the association. The operational capabilities of the new site are robust and will enable Insurors of Tennessee staff to be more efficient and effective delivering products and services to our members.

We are excited about the introduction of the new website this year and hope you find the website to be of greater value to you and your staff. Meet June Taylor—Wilkinson Agency The Wilkinson Agency is located in White House, Tennessee about thirty minutes up I-65 from Nashville, not far from the Kentucky state line.

The town was named for a historic white house that served as an inn for travelers transiting the old Louisville & Nashville Road on horseback or by stagecoach between Nashville and Louisville starting in the 1800’s.

The inn gained notoriety when General Andrew Jackson stayed there before he was elected President on his way to Kentucky. He was purported to tell people, in good humor, that he had stayed at the White House, albeit not the one in Washington. By some accounts, President Andrew Jackson continued to stay at the inn when he travelled from Nashville to Washington from time to time. White House prospered as a small-town farm community until I-65 was built with an exit at White House in 1972. Since then, the community has steadily grown and developed into a thriving business and residential community.

June Taylor started working in her family’s agency shortly after her graduation from Middle Tennessee State University in 1976. After working for a brief time at K-Mart, June joined The Wilkinson Agency in April of 1977. Working side by side with her mother, she learned about insurance and running the agency. June remembers taking Chuck Bidek’s licensing class in June of 1977 through the Insurors of Tennessee. She recalls that Chuck was a great teacher and she learned much about the insurance business through that class. She also quickly enrolled in a CIC course to further her insurance education only to be told by the instructor she might not be ready for the course. June asked that she be allowed to prove herself by going forward with the course that day. She scored quite high on that first test and in short order became the first woman in Tennessee to earn the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) professional designation in Tennessee.

The Wilkinson agency was located just a couple of blocks from June’s parent's house, so they would often go home to have lunch. After about six months, June noticed her mother started taking more time away from the agency after lunch until one day she just did not come back. After working in the agency for many years, June’s mom was ready to turn over the day-to-day operation to her daughter. Though her mom 16

The Wilkinson Agency located in White House, TN is a fourth generation family owned agency serving personal and commercial clients. was always available to answer questions and support June, her mom told her that as long as she was in the agency, clients would gravitate to her and not June. So, at twentythree years old, June became a young female agency principal in what was then a male dominated insurance industry. She has run the family business ever since. In a very real sense, she is somewhat of a trailblazer business woman in small town America.

June’s biggest challenges in the beginning were to earn the trust of her clients, the respect of company representatives and how to adapt the agency to a rapidly changing insurance marketplace. As a young person, she was not afraid of technology and saw the benefit of employing technology in the operation. She became an early adopter of agency automation including the Rackley Rating system, AMS agency management systems and other software and hardware available to run an agency. She notes that eventually the agency migrated to Applied Systems. Looking back now, June says technology was one of the most essential elements of success for the agency and continues to be today.

The technology allowed the agency to focus more on serving the insurance needs of their clients and on the growth of the business. June has also focused on hiring and keeping good people to serve clients and is quick to give credit to her staff who have worked diligently to serve agency clients with care and integrity.

Over the course of June’s forty-four year career as an agency principal, she placed a strong emphasis on continuing education, community service, professional networking, and industry engagement. She has also served on numerous insurance association boards through the years. Giving back of her time and talent has also been a cornerstone of her success.

Now, June’s son Andrew, an accountant, is an active partner in the business and the fourth generation of the family to carry the Wilkinson Agency forward into the future. One day when the time is right, like her mom who came before her, June may not come back from lunch, handing off the agency to the next generation. u The Tennessee Insuror

MTSU Prepares Business Students for Insurance Industry Careers Dr. David Wood is a risk management and insurance professor at Middle Tennessee State University. He also holds the Martin Chair of Insurance in the Jones College of Business at MTSU. Prior to his career in education, Wood worked as an independent agent with research interests including risk financing, solvency issues and agency/brokerage operations.

He has published extensively in academic and insurance trade journals.

He earned his Doctor of Business Administration degree from Louisiana Tech University, MBA from the University of Mississippi, and undergraduate degree from Delta State University.

Recently, Insurors conducted an interview with Dr. Wood.

Insuror: Can you tell us how MTSU prepares students for insurance and risk management careers?

Dr. Wood: Of course! MTSU is the only college in Tennessee to offer a major in risk and insurance. A lot of times students are attracted to this field from other majors. We also offer the opportunity for students to work on their CPCU and CIC. We involve our students in case competitions. Our student team recently finished 2nd then 1st in Selective’s College Competition against the selected eight teams. This goes to show the fine quality of MTSU’s students. When we were invited to select a team, I handpicked the students that showed outstand-

ing knowledge and passion for the field. This competition was started by the Independent Agents and Brokers of America. This offers real world exposure on what its like to manage an insurance agency. Internships are another excellent way for students to gain experience in the field. The students at MTSU are encouraged to join the Martin Chair LinkedIn group and Gamma Iota Sigma where they can learn from lots of guest speakers and travel for conferences and workshops. Career fairs never fail to yield great outcomes for students looking to get involved within the industry and to meet future employers.

Insuror: Why do you believe insurance and risk management is a good field of study and a strong industry for job/career growth?

Dr. Wood: I say it all the time that nothing happens without insurance. It is the lifeblood of our economy and is a great source of opportunity. In this field it is critical to emphasize integrity and good faith. Insurance tries to make the world a better place and is an industry that doesn’t produce tons of waste. It helps people recover financially when losses occur. More people should focus on the quality of insurance because it’s not all the same. As the economy grows the need for insurance will grow as well.

Insurror: What types of jobs have you seen MTSU graduates accept in the industry?

Dr Wood: All sorts of job are available in this industry. I have seen graduates take on entry level positions going into un-

derwriting and claims. Some go on as successful agents and I’d like to see an increase, but many agencies miss out because they want their new hires to have previous experience. I’ve seen students go into risk management or even marketing assistants and education/for-profit assistants. I have also seen students getting involved with the state commerce through administering exams and regulating agents.

Other notable positions students of mine have made me proud to see them take on include regional directors or Executive Vice Presidents, as well as various senior positions within their organizations. I am pleased that Young Risk Professionals offers numerous agents connections with leadership positions within their organizations.

Insurror: How do you see MTSU and the Insurors of Tennessee working together to develop students into insurance & risk management professionals for the future?

Dr. Wood: I am currently working with Thom Coats, the Director of the IGA Professional Sales Program at MTSU to put together an insurance sales internship. We are currently looking for independent insurance agencies to work with. Currently, most of our students are going to work for large organizations because they have formalized recruitment programs, but we want to extend the reach of more local agencies as well. Right

now, we have Chip Hoover mentoring our case competition team and the students are thrilled. Perhaps a shadow day for students with different agencies would help them with finding the right fit. Of course, I can’t leave out the financial contributions Insurors of Tennessee has made through scholarships and financial aid for students going into the insurance industry.

Insuror: How do you think the value of insurance will change in the future?

Dr. Wood: It will keep growing. Life is always uncertain and insurance will become more and more important. The uncertainty creates a need for insurance professionals to be forward thinking. We need insurance products that can address driverless cars, cyber security, Google assistants, and home Alexas. More people are beginning to work remotely so what will that mean for workers compensation? We need to continuously seek to improve health insurance and data analysis along with classes of risk. I am also dedicated to encourage more diverse students to consider insurance as a career opportunity as they have so much value to offer.

Through All Manner of Challenges, This Association Has Served Members Since 1894 It is an honor to serve as the President of the Insurors of Tennessee following in the footsteps of my father, Norfleet Anthony, Jr. who served as President of the association back in 1989. It was during that time early in my career, with still much to learn about the insurance business, that I had my first professional exposure to this organization. I was fortunate to follow along with my dad as he travelled from Ripley to Insurors of Tennessee meetings and gatherings across the state of Tennessee. It was during those trips that I gained a greater understanding about the depth and breadth of our business and the important role insurance plays in our economy and in all aspects of our communities. It also became clear to me then that the Insurors of Tennessee served a critical role in developing, supporting, and shaping our industry in this state. It was as true then as it is now.

Today, Tennessee has one of the healthiest and most competitive insurance markets in the country where insurance companies seek to do business, independent agencies can be successful, and consumers benefit from competitively priced insurance products and services. In short, we have a robust insurance industry in this state that effectively serves the marketplace. The same cannot be said for all states. It did not occur through happenstance.

It happened because professional independent insurance agents from Memphis to Bristol and points in between worked together in common purpose to identify areas of improvement in our industry and developed solutions to sometimes complicated and perplexing insurance issues. Those who serve on the Insurors of Tennessee Board of Directors are the people who drive this process. They are also the conduits for the flow of information from independent agencies across the state concerning a range of topics. I encourage you to contact the Board Member representing your area of the state with observations, questions, or issues that you believe warrant attention from the association.

This is your association. Your input and active participation are the keys to our ongoing success.

As I look back with some historical context, we are fortunate to belong to this historic association that has been serving members and the greater insurance community in Tennessee since 1894.

Through all manner of challenges including wars, economic downturns, political turbulence, natural disasters, terrorist attacks, pandemics and the list goes on, this association persevered and continued to serve.

The common thread is that those who came before us banded together in a cooperative spirit to meet those challenges and solve problems collectively as an association. Over the course of history, we have proven this organization is strong, resilient, and able to adapt to an everchanging environment.

From a strategic perspective, this year I hope to be able to focus the efforts of the Insurors of Tennessee to further enhance the insurance education components we offer, support the ongoing development of Young Agent’s initiatives, make certain our voices are heard on Capitol Hill on matters important to the association, further engage small town/rural agencies, and continue our outreach to women in insurance. I will also be prepared to address any emerging issues in this fastmoving insurance industry landscape as we go forward.

Thank you to outgoing President Bob McIntire, who did an exemplary job leading through some challenging times created by a historic pandemic. Bob left a very strong foundation for future success. I look forward to upholding the best traditions of the Insurors of Tennessee association, while working with the board of directors, CEO Ron Travis, his staff and members, to meet the needs of our membership in 2022.

Tennessee Young Agents '22 Future Leaders Spotlight

Jonathan Peters, CLCS • SouthPoint Risk, Nashville Jonathan Peters is a Producer/Risk Advisor for SouthPoint Risk Insurance & Bonds located in Nashville, Tennessee. He joined the firm in the Spring of 2021 after spending several years working with Enterprise Corporation in various auto and truck fleet rental management roles.

While there he gained a substantial amount of business and sales experience. He is a graduate of the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) where he earned a degree in managerial finance.

The Insuror: Tell us where you are from and bit about yourself.

I grew up in Jackson, Mississippi and attended Jackson Preparatory High School before going off to college at Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi. I had a great educational experience at Ole Miss and received a great education that prepared me for the business world. While at Ole Miss, I ran into three guys who shared my passion for music. We started a band called Riverside Voodoo that played rock and roll, blues, and other genres. I played drums and sang vocals.

We played at some local establishments and even toured around a bit. The band is still active today. We also have written and produced some original music that is available on Spotify and iTunes. While I was at Ole Miss, I was also fortunate to meet my wife. My home state of Mississippi has always been and will continue to be a special part of my life.

The Insuror: What was your business experience before joining the insurance industry?

After playing in the band/bartending for a few years after college, my discontent and drive for a professional career is what brought me to Nashville in 2016. I went to work for Enterprise Corporation like many young college graduates seeking to gain sales, business, and managerial experience.

As I developed more experience and knowledge, I was promoted into various management positions with each position leading to new and greater responsibilities.

The Insuror: What attracted you to the insurance industry?

When the Covid-19 Pandemic struck, Enterprise was in one of the industries really impacted. While several Enterprise employees were furloughed, I was fortunate to retain my job.

While I appreciated the opportunities Enterprise offered to me and the great relationships I developed there, I started thinking about other options. It was around this time that I was contacted by SouthPoint Risk about becoming a Producer/Risk Advisor for the company. I was attracted to the insurance industry because I was looking for a career where I could leverage and transfer my education, experience and skill sets to be successful. From my perspective, the insurance industry also offered greater earnings potential and a better career development opportunity.

The Insuror: What professional insurance education have you completed and what are your future education plans?

At this early point in my insurance career, I have completed insurance education to earn my insurance license and the Commercial Lines Coverage Specialist designation (CLCS).

Going forward, I have already enrolled in my first CIC class to continue to build my insurance knowledge and expertise.

I look forward to earning the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) professional designation.

The Insuror: What have you learned about what it takes to be successful in the insurance business at this point?

The most important thing I have learned so far is that attention to detail is critical to make sure clients have the coverage they need and to earn the trust of insurance underwriters. I also know it is very important to be transparent and honest with clients about insurance matters relative to coverages and areas of exposure. It is my responsibility to tell them what they need to know and not just what they want to hear. Finally, insurance and insurance terminology can be difficult to understand for individuals and businesses. It is part of my responsibility to explain insurance in terms clients can understand and to make the insurance business more relatable.

Government & Legal Update Advocacy Update: Legislature Reconvenes, Federal Group Health Producer Disclosure Regulations Take Effect The 112th General Assembly reconvened for the 2022 regular session on Tuesday, January 11th. It follows a year in which the Legislature, in addition to its 2021 regular session, convened three extraordinary sessions to focus on K-12 education (January), COVID-19 (October), and to approve state incentive grants for Ford Motor Co.’s new manufacturing facility in West Tennessee (October).

Governor Outlines Priorities in State of the State Address, Proposed FY23 Budget

Governor Bill Lee addressed a join convention of the Tennessee General Assembly in the House Chamber on January 31st to deliver his “State of the State” address. The annual speech is historically an occasion for the Governor to reflect on previous accomplishments, outline the administration’s new policy priorities, and propose a new state operating budget for the next fiscal year. The governor’s theme, “Tennessee – America at its best,” focused on “policies that reinforce freedom, innovation, exceptionalism, and optimism.”

The proposed $52.6 billion budget represents a nearly $10 billion increase from the previous year, with extra revenues due in large part to one-time federal stimulus funding and strong state tax collections despite the pandemic. The “big reveal” of the governor’s plan was a $1 billion increase in recurring spending for K-12 education. The announcement comes as the governor seeks a total overhaul of the state’s K-12 funding formula, known as the “BEP.”

New ERISA Disclosure Requirements

We have received a few inquiries from members across the state seeking direction regarding the new federal disclosure requirements and thought it might be helpful to highlight the new changes and share some useful resources on the changes.

As a reminder, Section 202 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act (CAA) was signed by President Trump in 2021 and became effective September 27, 2021. The new federal law imposed new disclosure requirements for providers, carriers, and brokers of health insurance in both the individual and group health markets. Some provisions of the new law apply directly to group health producers and consultants and are administered by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL).

On December 30, 2021, DOL issued a new bulletin in lieu of official regulatory guidance (i.e. “Field Assistance Bulletin No. 2021-03,” or “Bulletin”) to announce DOL’s “temporary enforcement policy” under ERISA. In pertinent part, the 31

Government & Legal Update continued bulletin summarizes the impact to brokers and consultants as follows: “The new disclosure requirements in ERISA section 408(b) (2)(B) apply to persons who provide “brokerage services” or “consulting” to ERISA-covered group health plans who reasonably expect to receive $1,000 or more in direct or indirect compensation in connection with providing those services. The information required to be disclosed under ERISA section 408(b)(2)(B), which includes both direct and indirect compensation that is expected to be received in connection with a contract or arrangement between a covered service provider and a covered plan, generally must be disclosed reasonably in advance of the parties entering into such contract or arrangement. The required disclosures are intended to provide the responsible plan fiduciary with sufficient information to assess the reasonableness of the compensation to be received and potential conflicts of interest that may exist as a result of a covered service provider receiving indirect compensation from sources other than the plan or the plan sponsor. The CAA provides that the ERISA section 408(b)(2)(B) amendments apply beginning one year after the date of the CAA’s December 27, 2020 enactment, i.e., December 27, 2021.” U.S. Dept. of Labor, Field Assistance Bulletin No. 2021-03.

Association Update Insurors New Member Services Assistant Insurors is pleased to announce Aliyah Turner has accepted the position of Insurors Member Services Assistant. Aliyah is a Murfreesboro, TN native. In 2018, she pursued a degree in Risk Management and Insurance at Middle Tennessee State University. During her time at MTSU, Aliyah interacted with industry professionals, joined the award-winning honorary insurance fraternityGamma Iota Sigma, earned scholarships, and received two CPCU credits. The summer of her Senior year, she was an underwriting intern for Public Entity Partners, in Franklin, TN; where she renewed workers compensation, liability, and property policies for government entities. Aliyah’s internship experience opened new opportunities for her, such as working for Insurors of Tennessee. In November, she accepted the role of Insurance & Education Support Specialist, where she hopes to make a difference in Insurors of Tennessee’s education and for- profit departments. In December, Aliyah graduated with the academic distinction of Magna Cum Laude.

Company Briefs Harford Mutual Insurance Group Appoints Two New Board Members Bel Air, Md. – Harford Mutual Insurance Group announces Jillian Froment and Teresa McTague have been appointed to its Board of Directors.

Jillian Froment is a seasoned insurance regulator with extensive experience in both the private and public sectors, including the last 10 years at the Ohio Department of Insurance, where she served as Deputy Director and Director until September 2020. She will serve on the Board’s Audit and Governance Committees.

Froment currently serves as an Advisory Board Member for Monitaur, a developer of machine learning assurance technology. In addition, she served as a committee member for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). She received her Juris Doctorate from Capital University Law School and Bachelor of Science degree from The Ohio State University. She received the 2020 Ohio Insurance Agents Citation Award and the 2019 Diverse and Inclusive Workplace Award. Froment has also been named an American Fraternal Alliance 2017 Outstanding Policymaker and spotlighted on the list of Columbus Business First 2017 Insurance Industry People to Know.

Teresa McTague is a senior executive with over 30 years of experience in investments, capital markets, finance, portfolio management, and asset and risk management. She is currently a Senior Managing Director for Aflac Global Investments, also serving as the U.S. Chief Investment Officer; Head of Asset Management Risk; Global Head of Direct Lending, Real Estate and Infrastructure Debt; and Global Head of ESG Investment Strategies.

McTague previously served as the Senior Portfolio Manager/ Client Strategist at General Re - New England Asset Management. Teresa was also a member of the General Reinsurance Risk Committee. She will serve on the Board’s Compensation and Investment Committees.

McTague received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California at Berkeley and a Master of Business Administration from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Stonetrust Goes Live With Insurity's Workers' Comp Suite Effective January 1, 2022, Stonetrust Commercial Insurance Company has fully implemented Insurity Workers’ Comp Suite, eliminating the use of multiple operating systems to reduce response time and immediately improve operational efficiency by up to 10%. The implementation included the conversion of Stonetrust’s historical data. With Workers’ Comp Suite, Stonetrust can enable straight-through processing to agency partners, integrate data analytics, and provide agents and policyholders with improved data access. Examples include custom reports and tools which enable carriers to better assess emerging risks and trends and allow carriers to identify and resolve problems quickly. Customers have access to their data through the Workers’ Comp Suite portal, saving them time by reducing the need for telephone and email inquiries to obtain the information they would have otherwise needed to contact the carrier to gather.

Stonetrust provides coverage for businesses in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Effective January 1, 2022 Stonetrust has expand into Alabama and Kansas and launched its preferred tier company, Stonetrust Premier Casualty Insurance Company.

Tyrann Mathieu Wins Nationwide’s Charity Challenge and $25,000 For the second straight year and third time overall, a Kansas City Chiefs nominee for Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year presented by Nationwide has captured the top prize in Nationwide’s Charity Challenge. Powered by strong support from Chiefs Kingdom, safety Tyrann Mathieu was announced as the winner of the seventh annual Charity Challenge and a $25,000 contribution will be made to the Tyrann Mathieu Foundation, courtesy of Nationwide. Mathieu’s win follows teammate Travis Kelce’s first-place finish last year. Former Chiefs safety Eric Berry won the inaugural Charity Challenge during the 2015-16 NFL season.

Mathieu established his charitable foundation to impact the lives of financially disadvantaged children and youth through encouragement, opportunities and resources to achieve their dreams in Kansas City and his hometown of New Orleans. Acuity Employees Distribute $500,000 in Support to Charitable Organizations At a December 2021 Town Hall meeting, Acuity employees determined the distribution of $350,000 among six different charitable organizations. Those organizations included Conquer Cancer,® the ASCO Foundation; Fresh Meals on Wheels; Mental Health America; Safe Harbor; The Salvation Army; and Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice.

“Our advocates support adults, children, and families experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking, and homelessness. We help them achieve safe and stable lives.

We’ve seen a steep decline in donations due to the pandemic, which is why we want to thank Acuity for supporting Safe Harbor,” said Vanessa VanderWeele, Volunteer and Community Engagement Coordinator.

Additionally, each of Acuity’s 1,500 employees was invited to choose any qualifying charity to receive a $100 donation from Acuity, for a total of $150,000.

Andy began his insurance career when he joined Arlington/Roe in 2001, where he is a third-generation member of the family-owned business. Over the last 20 years, he has been involved in many facets of the organization by holding various roles from underwriting to departmental leadership. He holds property and casualty licenses in several states, including surplus lines licenses, as well as several insurance designations.

In 2022, he was promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. His new responsibilities include maintaining and directing the daily operations of the company as well as working with the leadership team to ensure performance expectations and strategic plan execution. He promotes company culture and is heavily involved with human resources. Andy also oversees financial operations and manages relationships with our carrier and agent partners.

Andy is a graduate of Ball State University and has been involved in a variety of organizations over the course of his career. Early in his insurance career, Andy interned for an excess & surplus lines company in Arizona and in London with Lloyds. He was a very active member of the WSIA's UFO (Under Forty Organization) serving on the board of directors.

Agents Serving Our Community Calling All to Serve Our Community I am Amy Anthony; wife of Norfleet Anthony, your Insurors of Tennessee President for this year, 2021-2022. I am honored to ride on his coat tails and serve as First Lady! I have yet to see any Secret Service or red carpets at the IOT office; however, I am extremely grateful and appreciative for this timely opportunity to lend support and service to him, and the Association!

Some things that I am looking forward to this year are new responsibilities and joy at the chance to meet and get to know many of the agents and especially their spouses.

Second, there will be a bit of travel involved and getting to see new places and many more men and women in the “insurance world”.

One desire of mine is the actual “going out and serving the community” perhaps during the Annual Convention in October, to take place in Nashville. This could be an option for the spouses, if golfing, shooting skeet, or any other options are not appealing. I have been shown over and over in my life that I have been provided and given much to be a blessing to others less fortunate. You may feel the same way. If so, we can join together and “go out and make a difference”!

This time next year, which will be here before I know it, I will have much to look back on and for which to be thankful. I probably won’t be searching for the Secret Service or the “red carpet” any longer. That’s just a fun idea anyway. I will be looking forward to what is next for me and Norfleet including our families. We are definitely looking forward to more GRANDchildren! We are hopeful there will be a real extended time to travel, great health and the satisfaction of serving IOT so well.

Insurors Enables Friendships and Service to Our Communities Taylor Porch, Porch-Stribling-Webb, Waverly; Joe Hunt, JR., V.R. Williams & Co., Winchester; and Al Oliver and Portis Tanner, Westan Insurance Group, Union City first met as members of the Insurors of Tennessee. These peers grew their friendships as a result of networking over the years through Insuror of Tennessee member events.

Recently the four men went duck hunting together near the Mississippi River. After a successful day of hunting, Joe and Taylor each presented donations to United Way of Obion County for tornado relief. Obion county is home to Westan Insurance Agency as well as both the families of Portis and Al. On December 11, 2021, a tornado/tornados caused both devastation of property and death in Obion County.

Taylor Porch says it best, "This is what Insurors of Tennessee is all about. These friendships don’t exist without Insurors of Tennessee." The relationships gained from involvement in Insurors of Tennessee serve members both professionally and personally. At the end of the day, this is what membership in this association is all about.

Your Big "I" InsurPac Achieves Record Fundraising Year

InsurPac, the Big “I" political action committee (PAC), raised $1,245,352 in 2021, surpassing its previous high in 2019. A total of 3,660 donors invested an average of $340 per person. Last year, 353 “major donors" gave $1,000 or more, 66 contributed over $2,500, and 29 gave the maximum amount of $5,000.

A record $286,465 raised in the month of December alone. Leading the charge was South Carolina, who defended their title of InsurPac National Champions by raising $100,303. Rounding out the top five in total dollars raised was Massachusetts ($83,980), Texas ($73,480), Illinois ($62,688) and Georgia ($51,316). Overall, a record total of 41 states achieved their InsurPac goal.

In the race for the Big “I" Presidents Cup, given annually to the state whose past and current state presidents or chairs contribute the most money to InsurPac. South Carolina took the cup, raising a total of $24,058.

During the fundraising campaign, a record 18 states became InsurPac Eagle states after contributing an average of $100 or more per agency member. South Carolina led the charge by raising an average of $302 per agency. Other states to achieve Eagle status were Arkansas, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Dakota and Tennessee.

Young agents contributed nearly $154,000. South Carolina completed the “Triple Crown" by repeating as National Champions with $23,145. Georgia finished second with $15,801. Thirty one states achieved their young agent InsurPac goal.

InsurPac is one of the largest small business PACs in the country, credited with making the Big “I" one of the most well-respected lobbying associations on Capitol Hill.

Section 202 of the December 2020 omnibus government funding legislation included new compensation disclosure requirements for health insurance agents and brokers. The requirements took effect on Dec. 27, 2021.

The Department of Labor (DOL) has released Field Assistance Bulletin No. 202103, which provides further guidance and announces the DOL's temporary enforcement policy for group health plan service provider disclosures under ERISA section 408(b)(2)(B).

The Big “I" worked with outside counsel to produce a FAQ document and sample disclosure form, which includes the new guidance from DOL. Previously, the Big “I" hosted a webinar that discussed the disclosure requirements.
