Inspiring excellence in digital print

The Monthly Corporate Newsletter of Intec Printing Solutions

GREETINGS! Intec demonstrate the ColorSplash by printing greetings cards LIVE at ‘Progressive Greetings Live’. Invited by paperboard manufacturer, Iggesund – the CS5500 made a great impression on their high-quality greetings card stocks!

A selection of the greetings cards printed on the Intec ColorSplash CS5500

The only show for the UK’s greetings card industry!

‘Progressive Greetings Live’ took place between 2nd and 3rd June 2015 at Islington’s Business Design Centre, London. Intec were kindly invited to form a part of the Iggesund PaperBoard AB stand, to help show off their superb Incada® and Invercote G® board ranges. “The Iggesund designers came up with some stunning designs which looked fantastic when printed on their stock.” Said Terri Winstanley of Intec. “Literally hundreds of visitors flocked to the stand to see greetings cards and postcards being printed live and to take away samples”. The game-changing Intec CS5500, has a fifth colour station for either a white or clear toner cartridge. This allows for designs to incorporate the use of eye-catching white to be printed onto coloured stock - which looks stunning. Likewise, printing clear toner allows for elements to be picked out in the same way litho print utilises spot U.V. varnish, and subtly adds a premium feel to any job. If you are interested in the ColorSplash printer or finding out more about the Iggesund papers, please contact Intec Marketing on +44 (0)1202 845 960

Creative Shop, Isle of Man, gets all ‘zooped up’ in time for TT…

Intec’s partner GNP/Fastek in Yorkshire recently made a sale of a ColorSplash 4100 with a Fiery® RIP to ‘Creative Shop’ in Douglas, Isle of Man. Intec’s service engineer, Roger Ginnaw, installed the kit and got it all ‘race-tuned’ and ready to go!

Simon Brown, relishing the creative prospects offered by his new ColorSplash CS4100

Simon Brown the MD of ‘Creative Shop’, was looking for a versatile solution to add value to their current print portfolio of products, which includes a large format printer along with Ricoh production printer; the Intec machine hit the spot! Simon told Peter Swann of Intec, “The new printer has given me the opportunity to print banners in the future, along with posters for the forthcoming Isle of Man TT race. I also want to print cards & other heavy media. The quality of printing is superb and it’s a great entry level unit for printers wanting to expand upon the media they can print on to.” The TT race starts in early June, and the installation of the Intec was completed successfully in advance of the event!

Thousands of TT fanatics will be a captive audience for poster printing on Simon’s new kit!

“Really looking forward to printing on heavy stocks and also personalising customers photos into memorable posters.” Simon Brown Creative Shop, Isle of Man.

The hills are alive, with the sound of… Intec! At a remote rural location in Austria - the sound of an Intec printer is breezing across the hillside!

Intec’s new German partner, Solex, supplied a ColorSplash CS5600XF envelope printing system to their long-standing customer, ‘Bruckner Lettershop’. Bruckner Lettershop is a substantial commercial printing firm, located in an idyllic farmland setting near the Austrian town of Linz. The installation was jointly carried out by Solex’s Andi Maul and Intec’s Technical Support Engineer & Trainer, Andy Withall. Andy commented; “What a superb location, I can’t recall ever seeing anywhere quite so peaceful, spacious and ‘green’ as this region (and I’ve been to the ‘Emerald Isle’ twice!). After checking out the lonely install site on our evening of arrival, we were quite amazed to see around 30 staff cars parked up the next morning! I’d also like to say, Roswitha and her team were great to work with and looked after us both, very well.”

a few Kind words! It’s always good to know why our customers choose Intec products against that of our competitors…

Wolfgang Wild, Solex Geschäftsführer, asked Roswitha Brukner, what made her choose an Intec. Her three statements pay huge testimony to both Intec and Solex. Thank you.

1 The main reason: It comes with a decent envelope feeder (that’s where other suppliers are certainly lacking).

2 ColorSplash: is able to handle BLACK materials: other systems

like Ricoh or Canon cannot do that reliably … the sensors in the machine get confused and material gets stuck!

Master Class #3.2

Page 4

®

Continuing our ‘Master Class’ series, to help you get the very best from your Intec equipment, this is part two of an in-depth three part series on ‘Advanced Color Control’. The Fiery® RIP for Intec and accurate spot color control. We look at how to gain full control of one of the most crucial and unpredictable aspects of digital color printing - spot colors.

So, what IS a spot color and how does it vary from cmyk?

On a traditional lithographic printing press, a spot color (or solid color) refers to a color printed with its own specific ink - as opposed to being made up out of the four color cmyk process mix fig 1. Typically a spot color is specified from a color library such as the Pantone® Color Matching System, (although others are available, such as; TOYO, DIC, ANPA etc.) and the individual color required is identified by its own unique reference number - such as the PMS355 green shown in fig 2. The range of spot color inks available is nearly unlimited. However, matching any spot color out of the cmyk mix can often be very testing!

Tackling color profiles

Let’s start by looking at some tips and tricks when selecting the profiles which are already built-in to the Intec Fiery RIP. Ultimately, the profiles provided are an excellent starting point for all users, and for many – may be the only profiles you need. However, for the most accurate color match, the Intec FieryXF RIP enables you to build your own printer linearisation, and media profile. (Detailed later on). Profiles built for a specific paper weight and type can create a different effect when used with an alternate media. When using a different media, you can experiment with the pre-built profiles, to see if you can find the result you are seeking.

Last month’s MasterClass series • May Color control #1 featuring: The importance of the Intec Fiery RIP, Matching your equipment, Calibration, Profiling.

It should be noted that different textures on the paper can also influence the results. For example; when using a textured paper like Conqueror Wove, you can try the MEDIA TYPE : ‘Rough’ - however, we have also found that changing to the MEDIA TYPE: ‘Labels’ - can help drive the toner deeper into your paper’s texture and achieve a good result. The linearisation and profile set, can also shift color when used on alternate papers. Experiment with using Media Type: ‘Glossy’, and the Paper Weight: ‘heavy glossy’ - this is suitable for 200 – 250gsm media, and will deliver a darkerlooking image (than selecting media type ‘Plain Paper’, and the Media Weight: ‘Ultra Heavy 3’. A little experimentation offers a good feel for what the basic settings can do.

Getting spot colors right using the Fiery XF RIP

With a spot color, each color is either a specific tin of already mixed colored ink fig 3, or provided as a recipe showing exactly how many parts of which inks to mix together to achieve the desired color fig 2. Furthermore, the appearance of wet lithographic inks fig 3 to build a spot color will clearly look different to mixing the same percentages of dry toner. This phenomenon is another key reason for choosing an Intec Fiery RIP as your digital front end to drive your Intec printer – as the RIP can be used to overcome these variations. Whereas a standard printer driver will look at your spot color, determine the

Master Class #3.2…Continued cmyk mix of the color and then image this for you. Often, this will mean… some of your colors may not look exactly as you expected – or as your customer may require! One of the key reasons, why Fiery has been so successful with its penetration of digital front ends is that Efi understood early on, the desire of print companies to faithfully reproduce colors on their digital print systems – as closely as possible to that of their litho presses. Consequently, instead of looking at obtaining an equivalent cmyk value of each color, Efi invested in creating a technique, using a color spectrophotomer device to establish

Getting the color you want And now, Intec users can benefit from all this hard work! The Intec FieryXF RIP already has a default profile (A3 dimensional map/color space) of your Intec printer, using default papers and media types. This information, combined with the Pantone® ‘lookup table’, (which provides a known position on a 3D colorspace map, of what color you asked for), enables the RIP to translate ‘what you asked for’ into ‘what it needs’, to give you ‘what you want’. Result!

we’ll explain some key steps you need to take within the FieryXF RIP and printer settings, in order to gain full control of the process. Plus, we’ll outline how to use the color spectrophotomer device, which is available as an accessory.

Great CP3400 Deal Page 10

But there’s more… So far, we’ve outlined the basic spot color principles - in the next issue,

The ‘science bit: harnessing natural phenomena to our advantage…

‘true visual representations’ of colors. We’ll go into this in more detail in the next issue – but basically, the color spectrophotomer, refracts light through a prism which splits the light and measures it through leading color libraries and remaps the result into an incredibly accurate equivalent value – which enables your printer to achieve a much closer representation of the spot color you need!

A basic ‘route plan’ of the process from physical spot color to the translated data required to achieve the best representation of that spot color through your printer

Desperate to know more? If you have any specific questions relating to color control or the Intec Fiery RIP, I’d be delighted to assist wherever I possibly can. Mark Baker-Homes Director Business Development

Keeping up so far? If you’ve followed our guide so far, you’re doing very well! Light refracted through the prism is split into each primary color and then plotted as a 3D model of the target colors

Intec Staff, moved to help support Charity’s youngsters…

In the recent weeks since ‘International Needs’ presented an overview of the work they are able to perform - a good proportion of the Intec workforce felt moved to offer their own financial support! Keep updated here: http://www.intecprinters.com/aboutintec/making-a-difference/ Photos of our two sponsored youngsters with the some of the sponsorship material

Making a difference from as little as £20 per month!

It’s quite astonishing, that such a little sum (by western standards) can make such a big difference to individuals in Africa and similar countries.

Ian’s reaction

Ian Melville, Intec managing director, said, “I REALLY am delighted that you guys have felt moved to do this, beyond our corporate support.”

Those of us participating, have now chosen TWO youngsters to support and have arranged to have a few pounds a month docked from each of our salaries, which is transferred directly to ‘International Needs’ in support of the lives of these two Burkina Faso youngsters, aged 7 and 23 years.

“The fact that it only costs around £20 per month to support an youngster in Burkina Faso was something which struck a chord with many of us”, said Terri Winstanley, Head of Marketing and PR at Intec. “Over the following few days, a number of us came to a common conclusion we’d like to do something ourselves, to help fund a youngster. So we contacted ‘International Needs’ to find out if this would be possible. The charity was delighted and their sponsorship coordinator, Jo Wilson, assisted in providing us with useful information on how to go about the process – and also a few profiles of youngster who were in need of sponsorship support.

We’re attending this four-day Expo as we go to print with this Newsletter and the first day has been very busy, with at least a half-dozen serious prospects and more for Epix to follow up. This expo has more end-users attending than resellers and probably receives a greater proportion of attendees from South America than the Mexico City Expo, does.
