WELCOME!
FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY, MAY 13 – 15, 2016
This year marks the 35th Annual River City Invitational hosted by the Peoria Soccer Club and our local community. Again the tournament will be held at the very scenic Detweiller Park along Peoria’s majestic Illinois River. The tournament covers the Tri-State area and reaches as far as Minnesota, it supports approximately 100 teams, bringing in over 1000 players and family members to our community. Peoria Soccer Club (PSC) was founded in 1978 when soccer was in its infancy in the United States. The founders of PSC wanted to give every child the opportunity to realize their potential as a soccer player while using the sport to teach the values of personal fitness, teamwork, perserverance and sportsmanship. Did you know that the average soccer players runs over 5 miles during every game. Today more than 24 million Americans are playing soccer and it is the most popular sport in the world.
NON-FOR-PROFIT
The founders of PSC have always had one vision, “Every Child Gets to Play”. This is not just about getting to play on the field, but providing the foundation for those who may never get the opportunity to play in a structured, learned environment that the Peoria Soccer Club provides. The Peoria Soccer Club and its many volunteers thank you for your support. All Design, Layout & Printing of the official 2016 River City Invitational Program by Global Media Marketing, Inc.

PJ BLACKFORD PJ Blackford is the owner and operator of 4kicks soccer outlet in Peoria. He also had a distinguished soccer career that started out with the Peoria Soccer Club. We were the ‘83 Eagles and we started when we were 7 so that was back in 1989/1990 season. We were together at PSC until around 1999. Our team was runner up at state cup in 95/96 season. We lost to Chicago Magic who was an excellent side. There actually is a guy who was on that team we lost to that still plays in the MLS. We at one point had the record at PSC for most tournaments won in a row, which I believe was around 12 or 13 can’t remember exactly. Some of our bigger tournament wins were up in Chicago Magics tournament called “The Best of the Midwest.” We there beat Chicago Magic 1-0 and went on to win the tourney. Most tournaments we went to we at least were in the championship game. We always competed at high level tournaments. High School: I played at Peoria Notre Dame from 1997-2000. I was pulled up to varsity my freshman year. At the beginning of the season I was coming off the bench and getting a lot playing time, but towards the end of the season I began to start. He had me playing outside mid the whole season.Don’t quote me on this but I think I had 10 goals and 8 assists my freshman year. We didn’t quite make it to state. lost in the super sectional game to go to state. We went to Quicy high tournament and won it the first year we went. I scored the game winning goal in the last game to win the tourney. (left footed btw) My Sophomore year I started every game. I played striker and scored (once again don’t quote me) around 16 goals and had around 10 assists. My biggest accomplishment that season was in the super sectional game to go to state. I scored 4 goals in a 6-0 win. We finished 4th that year in state, which was the first time any Peoria team had ever brought home any hardware. You can almost say that year started it all for Notre Dame. After that year Notre Dame went to state 9 or 10 times in a row. Junior year I scored around 19 goals can’t remember assists maybe around 11. I scored game winner in the super sectional game to go to state in overtime golden goal from about 30 yards out. I was all sectional that year and made the all area team here in Peoria. Senior year I had 25 goals and 24 assists. We were ranked as high as 15 in the country by Fox Sports. We went undefeated until the last day of the year. We were 4th in state again. I made all area team, All State, All Midwest, and I was the Player of the Year here. College: I went to Western Illinois University on a scholarship. 2001-2003. In college I was more of an assist guy. I played outside mid and I actually hold a record in the Summit League conference for most assists in a tournament game.

SOCCER TIPS
“You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take.” --Wayne Gretzky
Gretzky may have been a hockey player, but his quote about scoring goals is true in any sport--including soccer. A lot of young players start out with hesitation to shoot. Instead of taking advantage of every opportunity. If you never shoot, you’ll never score.
Here are a few tips to help you make every shot count:
SOCCER SHOOTING TIPS:
• PIZZA S G N I W .. BBQ • d much more. • S R E an BURG
Observe the goalkeeper’s position. Have they left a gap that you can exploit? Select the best technique for your shot. A sidefoot shot will have greater accuracy, but an instep (laces) with good follow-through will have greater power. Put your non-kicking foot alongside the ball. Keep your head down and your eyes on the ball when striking. Keep your body over the ball. Make contact with the middle to top half of the ball. Maintain your composure.
DINE IN CARRY OUT CATERING
TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR CHANCE OF SCORING:
Shoot wide rather than high. There’s a better chance of getting a deflection that will wrong-foot the goalkeeper. Shoot low. It’s harder for a keeper to reach shots along the ground because it’s further for them to travel. It’s easy for them to jump up and save, but much harder to crouch down and get it. Shoot across the keeper. It’s tougher for them to hold these shots, and means they could divert the ball back into the path of another attacker.

Where Are the Most Shots Made?
FIRSTANDHOMERESTAURANT.COM
Ever wondered if there’s actually a “sweet spot” in a soccer goal? A place where you could kick the ball and it would go in almost every time? Well, there may not be a definitive “sweet spot,” but a recent study did take a look at where scored goals most often went into the net. Here are the results:
Top Left: 8 percent Top Center: 4 percent Top Right: 5 percent
Ouch. As you can see, shooting high means you have a pretty low percentage of actually scoring.
Middle Left: 7 percent Middle Center: 8 percent Middle Right: 6 percent
While you have a better chance of scoring if you shoot to the middle than up high, the odds still aren’t much in your favor.
Bottom Left: 22 percent Bottom Center: 21 percent Bottom Right: 19 percent
Look at these stats: 62 percent of all goals were scored low. This makes sense because it is very difficult for goalkeepers, especially tall ones, to get down to the ground. It’s much easier and more natural for them to jump high. Also, looking at the statistics, 67 percent of goals were scored in the corners versus 33 percent down the middle. If you combine the two statistics and shoot low into the corner, you should have a much greater success rate in scoring goals. As with any soccer technique, you need to practice if you want to improve your shooting skills. Fortunately, the techniques used for shooting are similar to those used for passing. So you can build up two vital soccer techniques at the same time.
But most importantly: If you see the goal, shoot! This one piece of advice is important enough to reiterate: You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take. If you see an opportunity to shoot, take it! The only way these tips can help you is if you implement them, both in practice and in games.

SOCCER ORIGINS
There is no clear evidence for who invented soccer. However, the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the worldwide soccer’s governing body says that there is evidence that Chinese played a game similar to soccer in 2nd and 3rd centuries. However, modern soccer traces its origins back to England. The game was played in between villages in England and grew into a more organized sport in the 19th century. The first full time league was formed in 1888. Soccer facts show that the game was added to the Olympic Games in 1908. After FIFA was established in 1904, it tried to arrange international tournaments. The first FIFA World Cup tournament was held in Uruguay in the year 1930.
WORLDWIDE POPULARITY Soccer is the most popular and watched gamed in the world. There are around 265 million soccer players and 5 million referees all over the world. Around 3.2 billion people worldwide watched the 2010 final World Cup in South Africa.
