HOTEL NEWS MEET OUR NEW EXECUTIVE CHEF InterContinental Manila introduces its new Executive Chef, Jean Marc Veron, who joined the hotel from Holiday Inn Clark in Pampanga. Jean Marc hails from Toulouse, France, where he honed his culinary skills in various French Restaurants until 1988. He then joined a luxury cruise company, and from there, traveled the world and gained experience in exotic destinations such as Kuwait, Morocco, Shanghai, Jamaica and finally, Kuala Lumpur. Prior to moving to the Philippines in 2013, Jean Marc held several executive chef positions in different hotels in Malaysia. In his spare time, Jean Marc loves taking on challenging bike trails such as the Mt. Pinatubo trail. He likes biking alone, as for him, it is an opportunity to “empty his mind”. His best and longest ride so far was biking from Cubao in Quezon City to Jariel’s Peak in Infanta, Quezon Province and back – a total of 190 kilometers of challenging roads. Jean Marc loves the Philippines’ temperate weather and finds it pleasant on most days. He says Filipinos have big hearts, love their community and find ways to support each other any way they can. When asked about his Filipino colleagues, Jean Marc said “I love working with them as they are willing to learn and improve themselves. They enjoy the small things in life, like friendship and laughter.”
HOTEL NEWS CHAMPIONSHIP WIN FOR INTERCONTINENTAL MANILA AT PURATOS BAKE-OFF 2015 An InterContinental Manila chef stands triumphant at the recently concluded Puratos Bake-Off last February at the World Trade Center. Puratos Bake-Off is one of the event highlights at Baker’s Cup, a prestigious competition where the country’s best bakers and professional pastry chefs showcase the exceptional culinary talent of Filipinos and vie for the championship and the honor to represent the Philippines in competitions abroad. Baker’s Cup 2015 is divided in two main events - the Angel Yeast Steamed Bun Competition and the Puratos Bake-Off. Joining the chosen few who made it from the elimination round for the Puratos Bake Off: Carat Chocolate Decoration Challenge held last January 13, InterContinental Manila’s very own Chef Aldrin Somera did not disappoint as he wows judges with his chocolate masterpiece and bags the overall champion award for the said category. Baker’s Cup is one of the main events at Bakery Fair 2015 held at the World Trade Center in Pasay. The said fair is considered as the biggest baking trade show in the Philippines annually flocked by pastry-enthusiasts from all over the country.
INSIDER GUIDE ARYA! ABRA FESTIVAL (MARCH 5 TO 10) Arya! Abra Festival or Abrenian Festival is an annual week-long celebration coinciding with the province’s foundation day from March 5 to 10 in the capital town of Bangued, Abra. The festival showcases the history and rich culture through agricultural fairs and cultural shows. Among the highlights of the festival are the Karerakit or bamboo rafting parade along Calaba River; Basi festival which features the famous Abrazzi, a mixture of basi, honey, and green mango juice; and Tinguan, a tribute to the province first inhabitants, The Iriya Tribe and other local tribes that contributed to the Abra community.
NATIONAL WOMEN’S MONTH March is declared as National Women’s Month in the Philippines. This year’s theme “Juana, Desisyon Mo ay Mahalaga sa Kinabukasan ng Bawat Isa, Ikaw Na!” (Juana, your decision is important to everyone’s future) seeks to pay tribute to all women leaders who passionately led and continue their advocacies. In relation to the event, an online campaign thread is being started with the official hashtag #JuanaIkawNa and a simultaneous National Women’s Day Program and street dance activity on March 8.
