Shapabet Typeface This is a typeface I created based around the concept of creating a typeface around basic letterforms and them being instantly recognisable, whilst making it fun and decorative. Some letters share the same shape, whilst the lack of spacing between the letters is intended to create a unique shape for every word. The end result is something that is intended to be cryptic so that users could hide cheeky messages, whilst being usable enough to be decorative and applied in subtle situations. The typeface comes with a complete character set and minimal additional characters to create short punctual type.

Sainsbury’s Prize Draw Poster I was asked to create a charity poster for a prize draw at Sainsbury’s. It was previously labelled a raffle but because of legal issues it had to be changed to prize draw. I certainly learnt to check of any issues regarding the law in any future work. The poster was inspired by old fashioned boxing posters, both in colour scheme and fonts. I settled on News Gothic Bold because of its prescence and was careful on text placement, wanting to draw the viewers eye down the poster with a sequence of information.
The Refectory Diamond Jubilee Poster I was asked by the Refectory pub to create a promotional leaflet for their Diamond Jubilee celebrations. I was given a free reign of the creative direction of the project, provided the correct information was displayed. I decided to go with a formal and regal theme featuring colours of the Union Jack. The font selection was also intended to give the impression of regality. With the amount of information displayed I decided to break up the information a bit with the layout, with the most significant piece of information highlighted with a white background. The white lines are there to break up the sheer amount of text. All this text is complimented with a simple diamond illustration, recycled from an earlier project.

Letter Distortions These images were an exploration of manipulating letters to create something new, abstract and interesting, again with a strong focus on pastel colours and shunning black. They also drew inspiration from digitalisation, and geometric shapes, a theme that has run throughout my work. These images show my design journey, leading into cryptology and abstract font design.

GROW

GROW Project This project was again something based around cryptic typography. This image was created by manipulating font by creating outlines and tracing text back and forth between various Adobe programs. The result is a digital, glitch type effect. An additional aspect of this project was shunning black in favour of navy blue, but also the use of pastel shades throughout. There was a strong focus on pastel blues, pinks and diagonal lines and distorting text. GROW (Left) was later displayed in the hallways of UCA Epsom.

Some examples of the GROW project, working on distorting text and a strong emphasis on pastel colours, shunning black completely.

The image above is a variation on the theme, going against the trend of the images before, featuring bright colours and hand drawn type.

Created in a similar style, these last three images had a focus on negative space and the merging of pastel colours.

Cryptic Type I have had an obcession with secrets in public places for quite some time and this was an extention of this. Here is a variety of different cryptic typefaces I created to try and find the perfect example. During this process I explored poster design whilst being inspired by neon sign culture. Use of colour, or in some cases lack of it, was important to bring the font to the focus of the viewer attention. Simple grid structure was used to keep things simple. The images all contain messages for the viewer to solve and although these fonts are all simple symbol-letter swaps, knowledge of the font is essential to solve.

Kruptos Typeface In my exploration of cryptology I created my own typeface designed to be decorative within a digital environment, hiding messages within any piece. The target audience was modern media users, those who often display secrets within the pulic domain and social media space. The letterforms are supposed to be intentionally unrecognisable, although it is fairly simple letter replacement. I wanted this to be solvable and fun. The font was eventually released for free online, with these images being created to generate interest and encourage use.

this is a sample of my font. As you can see the sapcing is big and the letterspacing small!

Kruptos Party Posters These to images were as much me trying to find where my font fitted within the world of type as it was creating some good final images. I have found that strong dominant typefaces tend to compliment Kruptos well. In particular Blackoak Std. These final images were also an opportunity to use some simple illustrations to make the final piece more interesting and explore new techniques.
