Overview When procuring a new or renovated facility, community colleges have an important responsibility to provide the community who voted to fund the project with something special, yet functional. It is critical that new buildings work on day one and continue to operate efficiently and with minimal maintenance throughout their lives. We have designed over 1 Million square feet of instructional space, administrative offices, laboratory facilities, and central utility plants with an emphasis on wise investment of community dollars.

We understand the particular need of community colleges to control their energy costs and minimize their carbon footprint. The challenging nature of voter-approved bond funding can lead to a situation where funds are available to build a new facility, but long-term funding to operate and maintain the building is not as easily secured. Our design philosophy for community colleges is to engage directly with facility operators to deliver a project that is compatible with their Operations & Maintenance budget and capabilities, leveraging both passive and active design strategies to keep energy costs low and MEP systems simple. Interface has worked closely with our design partners to craft engineering showcases of our projects, transforming the building from an educational space into an educational tool within itself. Our understanding of the needs of community colleges has come out of our broad experience and extensive dialogue with the campuses of all types, providing design services, facility assessments, sustainability consulting and campus masterplans. While we will be diving a bit further into our experience in parts II and III of this series, the following is a sampling of our Community College Experience.

Evergreen Math, Science, and Social Science Building LEED PLATINUM SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA

• 76,000 sf new Math, Science, and Social Science Building. • The building was designed using multizone, high performance single duct Variable Air Volume (VAV) systems.

Portland Community College Sylvania Campus PORTLAND, OREGON

• Two new buildings and renovation of over 25 different spaces ranging in size from 1,000 sf to nearly 100,000 sf • Swing spaces were designed with future finished space in mind to minimize impact upon conversion.

Merritt College Center for Science & Allied Health Building LEED GOLD OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA

• 110,000 sf building which contains all of the college’s health and science related programs and classes featuring classrooms; wet, dry, and simulation labs; and other educational and student support related spaces. • Interface’s design includes displacement ventilation systems and indoor air quality, daylighting, and radiant heating.

Portland Community College Newberg Education Center LEED PLATINUM NEWBERG, OREGON

• 13,500 sf Education Center • Sustainable strategies include a highly insulated building envelope, passive heating/ cooling systems, digital, addressable lighting control systems, and rooftop solar panels.

City College of San Francisco Multi-Use Building LEED GOLD SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA

• 102,000 sf new multi-use building. “breathing building” features a central atrium that functions as the building’s “lungs” to organize circulation and facilitation of natural ventilation to serve all occupied spaces • Honorable Mention for Education Facilities, New: ASHRAE Technology Award, 2013 | First Place for Institutional Buildings: ASHRAE Golden Gate Chapter Tech Awards, 2012 | Award of Merit: Engineering News Record California, 2011

Portland Community College Willow Creek Workforce Training Center LEED PLATINUM HILLSBORO, OREGON

• 94,000 sf space operating within an existing transit-development, it houses several departments focused on workforce training and continuing education. • Interface’s electrical engineering and fire/life safety design will achieve a 30% reduction in energy use.

Chabot Community College Student Service and Community Center LEED PLATINUM HAYWARD, CALIFORNIA

• 65,000 sf. Sustainable features include Switchable glass, natural ventilation, radiant heating and cooling slabs, variable volume diffusers, high percentage of daylighting.

Umpqua Community College Bonnie J. Ford Center Health, Nursing, and Science Center LEED SILVER GOAL ROSEBURG, OREGON

• 35,000 sf center provides nursing students opportunities to train on equipment and simulate situations they will encounter on the job. • Each lab where experiments involving noxious chemicals are performed is equipped with fume hoods which are connected to a central lab exhaust system ensuring optimal air quality at all times.

San Jose City College Physical Education Building SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA

• 59,700 sf PE building includes a full basketball court, a 5,800 sf fitness center, multipurpose classrooms, training and equipment rooms laundry facilities, locker rooms and office spaces. • Sustainable features include: A central HVAC system with indirect evaporative cooling to pre-cool the outside air and variable air volume (VAV) distribution, Demand based ventilation, Energy management strategies for temperature controls, De-stratification ceiling fans, Dual flush fixtures, Energy efficient LED lighting, and Daylight systems and controls.

Contra Costa College Student Activities Center & Classroom Building SAN PABLO, CALIFORNIA

• 57,369 sf Student Activities Center and 45,253 sf Classroom Building. The Student Activities Center includes large instructional cooking and baking spaces, commercial cooking spaces, and two dining rooms. • The project is designed to exceed Title 24 by 20% using technology such as: Heat recovery chillers, Variable volume kitchen hood exhaust and make-up air systems and Aggressive lighting and daylighting strategies.
