02 Our Culture By focusing on personal development and benefits, Interface strives to create pathways to success.
Culture is a critical part of life at Interface Engineering. Each of our locations has a slightly different personality, but they share a common vision for our teams: create a fun office environment, offer challenging work and projects, and provide the right tools for success. In 2017 we maintained this focus by expanding some of our existing programs, as well as developing new ones, to meet the diverse needs of our team members – all with the continued goal of growing our culture as well as our firm.
The first issue of our newsletter, StampSet, was released in May. Developed to spotlight the amazing achievements of our talented staff, it has become a popular publication with a readership average of 70% each month. Look for the next edition in March.

We also continued to build an even more diverse workplace, both through recruitment and staff development. In August, we presented at the Oregon Military Outreach Hiring Conference, and in July we kicked off Interface’s corporate annual sponsorship for the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), which provides memberships to each of our female team members. Our San Francisco SWE group is helping get the word out, including a visit to San Francisco University in November to showcase our firm’s work and career opportunities. Deltek Talent was a new addition to our annual review process this year. Launched to better help capture and process performance appraisals, the platform will expand to include continual, year-round feedback in 2018. It will also serve as a tracking tool for goals and professional development, supporting our team members even more as they advance their individual career paths.

When people think about care, they only want the best. The best is what’s been showcased at a new office park in Vancouver, Washington. The new campus shows the company cares about its more than 600 employees, their pets, the surrounding community, and the planet. VANCOUVER, WA

The company set out to achieve the highest possible LEED rating before they started building. That’s where Interface Engineering came in. The building consists of two three-story wings, and one two-story office wing. The complex includes a café, learning center, data center, and wellness facilities — including showers and locker room. The data center serves as one of two mirrored sites that serve the needs of the HQ and over 800 nationwide clinics. Traditional hot/cold aisles were eliminated. Ducted racks were installed to pull hot air into a plenum space above the dropped ceiling and recirculate it through the local AC units. This reduces the cooling load

through more efficient air movement. Power is supplied to the data center through two multi-module 150kW highefficiency UPS units in an 1+1 redundant arrangement that draws backup power from a 600kW standby diesel generator with provisions for a second 600kW generator to be added in the future. Each UPS unit operates at 99% efficiency under normal conditions and is upgradeable to 200 kW to meet future needs. Each UPS performs normally in a high efficiency mode, so power is supplied at 99% efficiency when power stability is high. The overhead plug-and-play power busway system provides maximum flexibility for growth, installation, ease of replacement, and repair for the IT racks. Drop cords can be easily accessed and rearranged along the length of each busway. The system also features integral monitoring to alert IT staff when system capacity is nearing maximum. Future capacity and redundant systems were provided to meet the growing demands of the industry-leading company.

The plumbing fixtures use 68% less water than a similarly sized complex would use if designed to baseline code specifications. They are served from an expansive rainwater capture system — over 420,000 gallons is used to supplement the water used at the complex.

American Geophysical Union NET ZERO ENERGY + WATER GOALS
The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is an international non-profit scientific association with 60,000 members in 137 countries. The purpose of the American Geophysical Union is to promote discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. In 2015, Interface Engineering was awarded the opportunity to convert the existing American Geophysical Union Headquarters into a world-class, Net-Zero Energy facility. The fullbuilding renovation will transform the 5-story, 83,000 gross square foot space into a state of the art work environment that facilitates internal collaboration and showcases AGU’s contributions to Earth and space sciences. The modernization design includes a mixture of modern workspaces and cutting edge meeting/ conference facilities that incorporate the most advanced technology and sustainable features. WASHINGTON,

Our team evaluated thirty-five independent Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs), in an

effort to reach AGU’s goal of becoming the first, existing commercial building in Washington, DC to achieve “net zero”. Ultimately, a bundle of roughly fifteen strategies were recommended to be included in the project’s Schematic Design, based on each strategy’s anticipated contribution to energy and water savings, waste and carbon reduction, human comfort, and employee health and well-being. Some of the more innovative solutions considered for the project include municipal waste heat recovery, concentrated photovoltaic (PV) array, radiant ceiling systems, DC current ceiling grids, solar concentrators, and hydroponic phytoremediation air filtration and treatment.

Milwaukee & Armitage Apartments The Milwaukee and Armitage Apartments project includes a seven-story structure housing 132 rental units, lobby, offices, fitness, retail, and a variety of ancillary facilities and amenities. The project, to be built in Chicago’s dynamic North Side, is positioned to supply modern apartments and amenities in close proximity to the City’s transit lines. CHICAGO, IL

Our work included the preparation of schematic design level MEP Permit documents and performance criteria used by the developer to receive competitive bids from subcontractors for final design and construction. The effort involved the successful development of a Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) alternative mechanical system design, seeking to enhance the energy and cost performance of traditional split-systems typically found in speculative rental apartment projects. Our expertise assisted the design team with energy modeling to inform the selection of mechanical systems, provided guidance and optimization of the exterior enclosure design, and demonstrated compliance with the City of Chicago’s Sustainable Development Policy.

San Francisco State University Recreation & Wellness Center LEED PLATINUM GOAL
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Interface
Engineering provided MEP engineering, lighting design and fire/life safety and energy services to San Francisco State University’s new recreation and wellness center. The building consists of three levels with a space program that includes, a two-court gymnasium with storage, a multi-activity court with storage, an elevated jogging track, event lobby and support space, three multi-purpose/group fitness studios, two racquetball courts, a climbing wall, a classroom, indoor natatorium and support space, wellness program space, outdoor recreation resources space, and an administrative office suite. Sustainable features include: »» Variable air volume system using the temperate climate for maximum economizing for cooling in conjunction with displacement ventilation. »» Return air plenum system with building relief fans to minimize fan energy. »» Digital scroll compressors for providing tight temperature and humidity control at the natatorium. »» Heat recovery coil at natatorium to reduce reheat energy. »» Grey water and pool back wash treatment system for building non-potable re-use. »» Photovoltaic system.

Noelani Elementary School is undergoing an innovative modernization with the addition of a new library and multipurpose building. The new building Interface is designing will house dynamic learning spaces such as a reading room and a computer classroom.
