At Interface, we think of schools as more than just buildings. They are educational tools that can enhance the learning experience. For many years, we’ve earned superior marks for creating high performance school facilities designed with long-term thinking, environmental insight, and low life cycle costs. Our scholastic experience includes over 2,000 K-12 projects. Our expertise not only serves clients, but students, teachers, and communities as well.

To perform well over time, schools must minimize life cycle costs. We do our homework up front, finding ways to reduce construction, utilities, and annual maintenance costs.

Our planning includes emphasis on environmental quality, including daylighting, thermal comfort, acoustics, and ventilation. Additionally, we create schools to serve as teaching aids. For example, interactive digital meters give staff and students data on energy use per room, showing how it affects their carbon footprint. We know that curriculum delivery and student retention are enhanced by implementing technology tools such as wireless audio/voice components, video displays, IP-based server systems, as well as security design, but are also greatly impacted by the thermal and visual environment. That’s why we approach our projects holistically, with a focus on the learning environment. Interface also has vast experience with California’s Division of the State Architect. We understand the concerns when it comes to including structural anchorage of MEPT equipment, ADA accessibility, accountability requirements for plumbing and electrical fixtures, and fire/life safety design. Interface’s approach is to design high performance, efficient sustainable buildings, while considering the cost, 4

long-term maintenance and operations issues specifically related to California school districts. Interface recognizes the demands on the school campus infrastructure and maintenance, and operation staff due to the construction of Bond related projects. Interface has been involved in a variety of education projects involving day care, preschool, Head Start, and K-12 schools throughout our nation. Our experience includes new construction, remodels, expansions, and master planning, and we approach each facility with the belief that each school is as unique as the community surrounding it. We are passionate about designing K-12 schools with sustainable design elements that go beyond LEED and CHPS, prioritizing combustion-free all-electric MEP systems, Net Positive Energy, and Net Zero Energy ready. To that end, we are always seeking lasting partnerships with those interested in leveraging our collective passion to create responsibly constructed facilities that support a productive learning environment.

East Kapolei Middle School CHPS VERIFIED KAPOLEI, HAWAII

• The project incorporates a mixed-mode Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) air conditioning system, which will be coupled with an intuitive and easy to use building management system that will notify occupants when outside conditions are conducive to natural ventilation. Reheat for humidity control will utilize waste heat from the VRF system, and domestic hot water will be produced from solar thermal collectors. • The campus was extensively modeled during the concept phase to optimize the campus layout to maximize natural ventilation to the classroom buildings. An innovative exterior shutter system allows windows to remain open overnight for nightflushing yet remain secure, while also providing sun shading during the day. • In order to extend the hours the cafeteria is expected to remain comfortable using natural ventilation, a system of purge fans were introduced to supplement the natural trade-wind flow by drawing hot air up and out above the stage and drawing in cool air through large, windward facing openings.
