With a highly diverse fringe programme of masterclasses, discussions, panels and the Script Pitch competition, interforum serves as a platform for generating interaction, dialogue, confrontations and discussions.

From birth, we are hard-wired to examine the most minute details of the human face. Because of this, we know at first glance whether the face of a CG-animated character seems ‘right’ or ‘wrong’. In his master class, Oscar®winning animator Chris Landreth will show how to create and animate the faces of human characters in such a way that they will seem ‘right’ – that is, realistic, believable and compelling.

This is a tough lesson: filmmakers may use a short film to demonstrate their talent and convince investors to finance a feature film. A cinematographer, actor, designer, or producer may use the film for similar demonstrations of their talents. In all cases, it will be watched once and the desired goal will be achieved or not “There is no second chance to make a first impression!”

Chris Landreth, Canada/USA, created several CG-animated short films whereof “Ryan” (2009) received the Academy Award in 2005 for Best Animated Short Film. Chris’s films explore storytelling based on human psychology as much as photorealistic character animation, an approach Chris calls “psychorealism”.

Jan Harlan, UK/Germany, Executive Producer of the legendary director Stanley Kubrick, joined Stanley Kubrick in 1969 and worked on all Kubrick films from Barry Lyndon onwards. Jan is a guest-lecturer at different film-schools in Europe and often serves in juries at film-competitions. He is also much involved with THE STANLEY KUBRICK EXHIBITION, which tours the world with phenomenal success.

HOW ONE CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN CAPTURED THE IMAGINATION OF VIEWERS ACROSS THE GLOBE

Now an everyday buzzword, crowdfunding has long ceased to be a secret. For certain material and target groups it has long established itself as an integral part of the creative producer’s toolbox. Linus Andersson, producer of the crowdfunded hit Kung Fury, reveals how a spectacular action-comedy that is rooted in 80s cop shows-and also features laser-spitting dinosaurs, nazi robots and ‘The Hoff’-went from a crazy idea to a YouTube hit with more than 20 million views. Linus Andersson, Sweden, Producer of “Kung Fury”, runs the production company Lampray since 2010. While working with information, documentary, TV and commercials, he has always kept his love for fictional film and his belief in fulfilling crazy dreams. The event is followed by the screening of the short film Kung Fury (David Sandberg, SE, 2015, 31:00 min).

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FOR SHORT SCRIPTS AT INTERFILM BERLIN

It‘s all happening! The international jury selects the three most original script ideas – fingers crossed for all eight Script Pitch contestants. Arriving from all over the globe, each of the eight finalists has only 5 minutes to present a short film script. In these five minutes, the pitchers must convince the jury that their scripts are winners. Jury members are Anna Brüggemann (actor, screenwriter), Emily Kyriakides (senior producer) und Gerhard Meixner (producer). Following the pitch event, interforum invites the public to take part in a meet and greet with the event participants.

What dictates the rhythm of the crisis in Greece and tempo of Greek society’s plight? How are the dynamics of moral convictions which have been contaminated by the Ukrainian War propelled from the front to a young soldier’s innermost self? How compliant and blasé are mass societies about following their predetermined paths and how obliviously do we allow the fates of foreign asylum seekers pass us by? The writers of these selected scripts have adapted current socio-political topics and created powerful images for the unspeakable. But even among the extremely personal stories, relentless movement is the driving force behind the unfolding of ideas. In a boy’s traumatised state, fear forges visions that in turn, also forge fear; typewriter sounds become the dictating rhythm of a writer’s self-imposed everyday optimisation; and the herd of horses imagined by a young herdsman breach the otherwise unyielding borders of the “normal” and “abnormal”. The cores of these new, proposed short films are thrilling and lively, grotesque, imaginative and extremely honest.

This year’s round of eight International Script Pitch finalists come from all over Europe to pitch their projects in the screenplay competition at interfilm Berlin’s special section for industry professionals, interforum. While the finalists are from countries as diverse as Hungary, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, Greece, Russia, Denmark and Albania, the motifs and tonality of this year’s stories were largely characterised by movement, dynamics and change.

Be a Better Being sets the stage for a fruitful encounter by bringing filmmakers and academics together as equally significant analysts of our times. At the heart of any film lies its story. The short film is considered a broad territory for narrative experiment. Nevertheless, even in short format, the narrative core is constructed on a fundamental idea for connecting individual narrative elements and levels of narration as well as on a clear vision for the film. “Approaching the Story” discusses the extent to which a strict structure of acts, strong characters, high emotion, or improvised dialog may drive cinematic storytelling.
