Autumn is here - a time for transition. In the northern hemisphere this means cooler, shorter days, the appearance of colorful foliage, harvest time, and feasts and festivals. School begins, vacations end, and we are drawn back to our homes to prepare for winter, with the memories of the summer drawing to a close. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attack on this nation. As a nation, we have seen no greater horror than the desecration of our soil and the loss of innocent American lives. We will mark this year with the opening of a memorial in honor of those lost in New York City. Take a tour of the memorial with us.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard was decommissioned in 1966 having had a part of all the major conflicts in which our country engaged. Since it’s closing, it fell into disrepair and became a neighborhood eyesore. Now, with the infusion of funding from the City of New York, it is taking on a new form, and a museum chronicling the legacy of the Navy Yard and all the famous ships built therein is expected to open this fall. If this winter is to be as cold as the summer was hot, keeping warm and energy efficient will be a top priority. Thinking fireplaces? I am. Read about the types of fireplaces in this issue to make the right choice for your needs.

T
o say that rents in Manhattan are high is like saying there are a few rats in the subway- it is a gross understatement of the facts. Paying these exorbitant rents can leave the borough’s residents with little money to pay for anything else. But really, what good is it to spend thousands of dollars on an apartment and be left sleeping on a bare floor? Everyone needs furniture, but paying top-dollar might not be an option when you have to keep a roof over your head. Luckily, we’ve compiled some ideas about where you can find some great deals on furniture that should still leave you with enough money to pay the rent.
Julia Lisanti Shopping in Manhattan Buying anything in Manhattan can be expensive, but if you know where to look you can find some great deals on furniture and other household items. Granted, you will still be paying Manhattan prices, but sometimes it pays to invest in quality. It is often worth the cost to spend a little more money to buy something that will last a lifetime. Bearing that in mind, ABC Carpet and Home is on the relatively-high end of the spectrum price wise, but they really do have amazing stuff. Stunning furniture, fabulous oriental rugs, and luxurious linens are just some of the items you will find at this chic shop. Other great sores in Manhattan

include: Room & Board in SoHo, Downtown Furniture Inc. on Grand St., Pippin Vintage Home in Chelsea, Housing Works Thrift Shop on the Upper West Side, Antiquarius Imports in Chelsea, and Surprise. All of these stores carry a little bit of everything for the home, and are great places to look for a deal. Try the Outlets In general, furniture outlets are a good place to look for a bargain. Outlets handle surplus, and surplus items are often sold at a discount in order to make them move faster. Both ABC Carpet & Home and Antiquarius Imports have warehouse outlets in Brooklyn (specifically in www.interiornewyork.com
DUMBO) where you can find many of the luxury items from their Manhattan showrooms at discount prices, often as much as 30-50% off. Granted, the items being discounted are expensive to begin with, but the superior craftsmanship and resultant longevity are worth the price. In addition, these outlets are actually larger than their Manhattan counterparts, so finding a good deal may be worth the trip to Brooklyn. Go to Brooklyn Speaking of going to Brooklyn, if you really want to save money and get some good quality furniture, you should definitely try Brooklyn. Specifically, Williamsburg and DUMBO are simply overflowing with high-quality, reasonablypriced furniture stores. In addition to the furniture warehouses previously mentioned, DUMBO has plenty of smaller stores and showrooms featuring the work of up-and-coming designers as well as old-world craftsman. In Williamsburg, try Sanders Furniture, The Future Perfect, Lee’s Furniture, or the Rifi Furniture Gallery. For carpet & flooring you should also try Boro Rug & Carpet and Quality Carpet. Try the Chain Stores If you want to save money, chain stores like West Elm, Pier 1 Imports, CB2, and
even IKEA are a safe bet. Because these stores are chains, they can afford to sell items cheaper. The only problem with a store like IKEA is that you will have to put the stuff together yourself, but that’s the price you pay to get the items cheaper. Also, the quality may not be as good, and the items may eventually fall apart on you (especially if you don’t put them together correctly). Jennifer’s Convertibles is a good place to look for a sofa bed, which may be an ideal choice for a studio apartment or anyone who plans to have overnight guests. Don’t be Afraid to Get Furniture Secondhand Flea markets, antique shops and thrift
14 INTERIOR NEW YORK SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2011
stores can all yield wonderful surprises. There are a number of great flea markets held in the city very weekend where you can find just about anything you might need for your home. Modern and antique furniture, lamps, rugs, dishes, and decorative items can all be found in venues like the Brooklyn Flea (held every weekend in Fort Greene on Saturday and Williamsburg on Sunday). The Brooklyn Flea Market on 20th St. in Park Slope is another small but spectacular market held on weekends. Secondhand stores like the Salvation Army are another great place to find heavily discounted, if slightly used, items. I wouldn’t necessarily buy a mattress at one of these stores, but they are not a bad place to find wooden furniture or a gently-used sofa. The best Salvation Army location to find deals on furniture is the Manhattan store at 46th St. Finally, in terms of finding both new and used items, shop around online. Websites like overstock.com are great places to find furniture and household items at discount prices. The only problem with shopping online is that you can’t see the items first-hand before you buy them. You could get the item delivered and then realize the quality is not as good as you thought. Also, most of these pieces will need some assembly upon delivery. www.interiornewyork.com

A Fireplace Turns A House Into A Home by: Christine Loxley
H
aving a fireplace in your home is a great way to heat your home... and it can look great while doing it. But when choosing a fireplace there are some important aspects besides the aesthetic beauty that you must consider in order to maximize efficiency for the heating of your house. A good-looking fireplace is useless in a cold room! One thing that must be looked at is the efficiency rating of the fireplace. This is measured by the heat that is produced by the fireplace. Generally fireplaces have an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating. The higher the AFUE rating the more efficient the fireplace. Make sure that when you compare fireplaces that the numbers used for 22 INTERIOR NEW YORK SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2011
www.interiornewyork.com
the ratings are on the same scale. In choosing a fireplace you need to look at which one will be the best fit for your home. It depends on the model type and the space you have for the fireplace in your home. There are three main types of fireplaces which are inserts, direct vent and vent free models. Generally most of the gas models can be converted so they will run on propane and many fireplaces that are wood burning can have gas jets added to them to add to the desired heat. You will also have to look at the cost of the form of gas or wood to factor in what you will use as fuel to heat your home. Once you have the right model in terms of heating capability, you can decide on the look. The fireplace that you choose must match the dĂŠcor of the room you wish to put it in. But there are literally thousands of styles of fireplaces so there is bound to be one that fits your style needs. Fireplaces can be a great addition to any home as well as a very attractive part of your house.

T
he Brooklyn Navy Yard is undergoing a dramatic transformation. Through a combination of public and private sector investing, the long-since decommissioned naval installation has been given a new lease on life, literally and figuratively. Newly arrived and expanding tenants, infrastructure improvements and recent restoration efforts have all helped to revitalize the Navy Yard, and more changes are on the way. The addition of a museum dedicated to the Navy Yard’s history and the planned addition of a film school are part of an effort to open the navy yard to the public and integrate it into the neighborhood. Officially known as the United
By Julia Lisanti States Navy Yard at New York, the area that became known as Brooklyn Navy Yard was purchased by the United States government in 1801. Until it was decommissioned in 1966, the Navy Yard had a part of all the major conflicts in which our country engaged. Having such a long and distinguished record of service to the United States military, the Brooklyn Navy Yard has earned its place in history. That history is set to be honored shortly with the addition of a museum chronicling the legacy of the Navy Yard and all the famous ships built therein. Among the rather impressive list of ships associated with the Navy Yard is the USS Monitor, the first ironclad ship built for the Civil War. The ill-fated

Maine, whose sinking led to the SpanishAmerican War, launched from the Navy Yard in 1895. In 1915, the USS Arizona was launched. Its sinking by the Japanese in 1941 brought the U.S. in WWII. The USS Missouri launched from the Navy Yard in 1944. The Japanese announced their unconditional surrender on the ship the following year. Another famous ship associated with the Brooklyn Navy Yard was the PT-109. The boat was delivered to the Navy Yard for fitting in July of 1942. The young commander of the ship, John F. Kennedy, became famous following his heroic efforts to save his crew after the ship sunk in August of 1943. In addition to highlighting all of the famous ships associated with the Brooklyn www.interiornewyork.com
Navy Yard, the planned museum will contain artifacts from the Navy Yard’s history, as well as oral histories and personal items from the workers. Among the items to be included in the museum are: nautical items, uniforms, buttons, maps, and a 22,000 pound anchor off the Vietnam-era USS Austin. Personal items from the workers, like post cards and jewelry they created for their girlfriends from scrap metal, will also be included. The museum, which will be known as the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at Building 92 (or BNYC92 for short) will emphasize the tens of thousands of people who have worked at the Navy Yard over the years. In particular, the museum will focus on the contribution of women who worked at the Navy Yard during WWII, as well as AfricanAmericans who worked at the site during segregation. A highlight of the museum will be the restored Marine Commandant’s residence, an 1857 building designed by Thomas U. Walter, the same man who designed the United States Capitol. The facility will also include a modern extension being built by Capsys, a Navy

Yard tenant. This building will feature job training and classes, as well as providing a place to eat. The museum is scheduled to open in the fall of 2011, and admission will be completely free. According to the president of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation, Andrew Kimball, they are not even asking people to make a donation. He expects the museum to attract about 26,000 visitors a year. Aside from the addition of the museum, the Navy Yard is undergoing quite a few positive changes. Despite the flailing economy, the Navy Yard has actually increased the number of tenants in residence, and many of their existing tenants are expanding. Last year, 15 businesses signed new leases and 9 of the Navy Yard’s existing tenants are expanding. Among the new and expanding tenants are quite a few artists, designers of all types, as well as craftsman and manufacturers. One expanding tenant worth noting is Steiner Studios, which recently announced a massive expansion which includes the addition of a film school. The studio is set to build 45,000 square feet of new sound stages and rehabilitate the historic 235,000 square foot Building 1. Part of the expansion will include embedding a film school within the film lot. This first-of-its-kind film school is being undertaken in conjunction with Brooklyn College and will no doubt provide its students with a lot of practical 32 INTERIOR NEW YORK SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2011

experience in filmmaking. Although the Brooklyn Navy Yard may have fallen on hard times when it was decommissioned in 1966, the former shipbuilding site is more than coming back- it has arrived! Its 201-year history is being honored with a museum while its future is being assured. The city, who owns the Navy Yard, has invested over $200 million in infrastructure at the site, with additional investments coming from the State and federal level. The existing facilities are at 99 percent capacity and there are plans to expand. The current plan will add 1.5 million square feet of new space and create about 2,000 new jobs in the next two years. With the economy being as bad as it is, that’s saying something. The Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at Building 92 (BNYC92) will serve as a gateway to the community. Through permanent and rotating exhibitions and programming that will explore the Yard’s rich and illustrious history serving both national and local communities, its evolution to become a national model for sustainable industrial parks and its continuing role as a vital economic, manufacturing and cultural hub of Brooklyn. Housed in the renovated 1857 Marine Commandant’s Residence with a modern extension, BNYC92 will educate and inform Brooklynites, New Yorkers and the public about the significant role the Brooklyn Navy Yard has played, and continues to play, in the history of the United States and Brooklyn.

he National September 11 Memorial is a tribute of remembrance and honor to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center site, near Shanksville, Pa., and at the Pentagon, as well as the six people killed in the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993. The Memorial’s twin reflecting pools are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in the North America. The pools sit within the footprints where the Twin Towers once stood. Architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker created the Memorial design selected from a global design competition that included more than 5,200 entries from 63 nations. The Memorial Plaza is one of the most ecofriendly plazas ever constructed. More than 400 trees are planned for the plaza, surrounding the Memorial’s two massive reflecting pools. Its design conveys a spirit of hope and renewal, and creates a contemplative space separate from the usual sights and sounds of a bustling metropolis. Swamp white oak trees create a rustling canopy of leaves over the plaza. This grove of trees bring green rebirth in the spring, provide cooling shade in the summer and show seasonal color in fall. A small clearing in the grove, known as the Memorial Glade, designates a space for gatherings and special ceremonies. The Memorial plaza has been created as one

of the most sustainable, green plazas ever constructed. Its irrigation, storm water and pest management systems will conserve energy, water and other resources. Rainwater will be collected in storage tanks below the plaza surface. A majority of the daily and monthly irrigation requirements will be met by the harvested water. The project is pursuing the Gold certification in the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for New Construction program. LEED is a third party certification program for green building, design and construction. The plaza is also built to meet requirements of New York State Executive Order 11 and the WTC Sustainable Design Guidelines, which both promote environmentfriendly practices. This urban forest will flourish near adjacent green spaces, including Battery Park City, City Hall Park, Liberty Plaza, the churchyards at Liberty Church and St. Paul’s Chapel as well as the planned Liberty Park just south of the Memorial. The names of every person who died in the 2001 and 1993 attacks are inscribed into bronze panels edging the Memorial pools, a powerful reminder of the largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil and the greatest single loss of rescue personnel in American history. The 9/11 Memorial will be dedicated on September 11, 2011 the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in a ceremony for victims’ families. It will open to the public on September 12, 2011, and will welcome visitors who have reserved advance passes. Visit 9/11memorial.org for tickets.
The official New York State September 11 Memorial Flag was unveiled by Governer Cuomo The symbols on the flag evoke what was lost on September 11th and what still endures. The 40 yellow stars represent the fatalities upon United Flight 93 that crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The five-sided figures represent the Pentagon, where 125 people died. At the center of the flag are the Twin Towers, where the greatest loss of life occurred that day. The flag measures 45 inches x 60 inches.

C
arter and Pixie were seeking flair for their new Upper East Side apartment. When they moved into a luxury building by renowned Robert A.M. Stern Architects, a few preliminary design inspirations excited them into action. They knew collaboration with their friend, Interior Designer Jena Marchione, was key. The three joined forces to turn the crisp, stark space into a uniquely defined home, indicative of Carter and Pixie‘s flavorful personalities and sophisticated tastes. Carter and Pixie agreed to shed the English Country style of their previous apartment for one with a contemporary edge, while not forfeiting traditional influences. Their challenge was to create a sophisticated home to indulge their lifestyle of entertaining friends and family, living well and embracing comfort with their two children, all within a Manhattan apartment. The palette that inspired Carter and Pixie is truly delicious; colors of grape, chocolate, raspberry and strawberry. As Pixie fell in love with a fabric, finish or furnishing each passionately hand picked, Jena layered the elements into a design scheme of dramatic statements that together form an energetic yet smooth cadence. The color and texture of the fabrics, the luminosity of the finishes, the graceful curves and undulations of the furnishings were intended to be sumptuous and elegant while also playful. The hot pink Osborne & Little silk fabric for the living room draperies is as dramatic as a ball gown. The sapphire blue Rodgers & Goffigon velvet on the living room sofa is rich like a jewel. The China red of the Christopher Spitzmiller ceramic table lamp is as hot as the lipstick on a 1940’s Diva. The Denis Collura custom chandelier over the dining table is the piece de resistance that gracefully lights the room as it peers through the sheer draperies overlooking the private terrace. Pattern, color, texture and sheen intertwine and upwind much like the dynamic movement of the Rick Giles photograph centered over the living room sofa. The outcome of the colorful collaboration between friends mixing business with pleasure created a home where everyone is welcome to indulge their fancies no matter what the flavor.
ABOUT THE DESIGNER Jena Marchione’s design philosophy reflects a passion for comfortable and sophisticated elegance. Traditional and contemporary elements combine unexpectedly to create a unique experience that evokes an effortless feel. Soft and sumptuous palettes contrast bold accents. Sculptural and carved pieces contrast clean lines. Her design draws from the individual style of each client and combines with her creative inspiration for design without boundaries. Jena Marchione Interior Design offers services for interior remodels, decorating, custom cabinetry and furniture. Jena has over 12 years of experience in both San Francisco and New York City where she has designed a versatile number of residential and commercial projects ranging from urban residences to country escapes.

I believe value comes in the long run, a job well done that continues to please years after the work is done.

How to Prepare Your Deck for Winter It’s time to start thinking about winterizing your cedar deck.
A
utumn is here, and winter is on its way, which means it’s time to start thinking about winterizing your cedar deck. The winter rain, snow and cold can deal a lot of damage to even the hardiest cedar deck. Fortunately, by making some simple preparations for winter you can help prevent your deck from appearing old and gray when spring arrives. Take these steps to prepare your cedar or composite deck for winter: Scrub the Surface Many homeowners overlook this important step in their fall home maintenance routine. If left on your deck, dirt, leaves and other debris from your
yard can decompose and damage the decking material. Use a hose and scrubbroom to give your deck a good washing and cut down on the amount of decaying matter in your deck fibers. This will also help allow air to circulate between the boards, which will make your deck more resilient against rain. Get Rid of Mold and Mildew Mildew and mold are two of your cedar deck’s worst enemies. They can grow in small cracks in the wood and cause significant problems unless they’re nipped in the bud. There are plenty of products on the market that will remove mold and mildew, but it’s always a good idea to check the manufacturer’s recommendations first.

Clean and Move Planters When planters are left on your deck throughout the winter, moisture can pool underneath, resulting in mold and mildew growth as well as leaving unsightly stains on the decking material. If possible, move your planters into a garage, shed or beneath the deck for winter. Restain if Necessary The stain on your cedar deck acts as a shield against moisture, but if you haven’t restained in a while, a harsh winter can break through and damage the wood. Staining can be a big chore, but it’s easier than dealing with the eventual consequences of leaving your deck unprotected. Cover For areas with particularly harsh www.interiornewyork.com

However, it’s important to exercise caution when covering your deck. If the wood isn’t completely covered, water can pool on the wood and lead to mold and mildew growth. When done properly, however, a cover can help your cedar deck withstand the worst winter has to offer. Getting your cedar or composite deck ready for winter can seem like a major task, but by taking these simple preventative steps now, you can avoid a lot of maintenance issues in the spring and prevent the weather from doing permanent damage to your deck. A carefully winterized deck can look just as good in the spring as it did the fall before, but only if you’re willing to make the effort.
