EDITOR’S COMMENT

Andrew Kidd EDITOR

Confidence boost The level of products that manufacturers are gearing up to launch this month bodes well for 2015 Judging by the flood of information I received last month on products that manufacturers will introduce at the various trade shows this month, there is a definite mood of optimism among many manufacturers. Introducing a new product is an expensive business and is not undertaken lightly by companies. With so many products about to be unveiled, the manufacturers have calculated that there is an appetite for products that wasn’t there a few years ago, when new product development was put on the back burner and existing ranges were tweaked or the archives raided. Obviously the proof of the pudding will be seen in the coming months when those products make it on to shopfloors, but it bodes well for 2015. As you will see on p14, there has been an

element of consolidation in the Belgian carpet sector, with Lano buying McThree’s Bajong. Whether this is the start of a wider reduction in over-capacity (there have been some delicious cross-border manufacturer/ retailer combination rumours recently) or just McThree concentrating on its core rug operations, remains to be seen. As you read this there will be less than a week to go before the first January Furniture Show takes place, marking the 25th year a furniture show has been held at the NEC in January. The facts that the show sold-out in the time that it did and the organiser has already booked Halls 4 and 5 for next year, shows that January is the month the industry wanted for the event and the NEC is the place it wanted it to be. Reducing the exhibition to three days should make those days busier, even if it may cause some problems for those trying to look at as many stands as possible. Finally, if you were looking for a new store and came across a disused power station, would it even be on your radar? See p126 to see how it can, and has been done, to great effect by Kare in Munich.

NEWS

Carpetright to take IFC route as part of revamp Carpetright was due to follow the example of ScS and offer customers interest free credit, as Interiors Monthly went to press. The chain was due to launch IFC on Boxing Day after a trial in Scotland. ScS has made much of its ability to offer shoppers combinations of products for a ‘per month’ price. The move is part of plans by Wilf Walsh, Carpetright chief executive, to relaunch the brand in 2015, competing on price and customer service and overhauling its product offer ‘while retaining [its] well-established value heritage’. ‘We believe that, with a well researched and well executed strategy, we can begin to reshape Carpetright to ensure the business fully capitalises on its market leading position. These changes will take time to take full effect but we are absolutely

focused on maintaining the recent improvements in the performance of the group, as well as devoting our energies to revitalising our brand and operations in line with contemporary customer expectations. As a team we are excited by the potential that exists and are concentrating hard on execution of this new strategy as we enter 2015,’ says Walsh. His comments came after the chain saw underlying UK operating profits increase from £5.5m to £7.3m in the six months to 25 October. Like for like sales rose by 6.5%. Total UK sales were 5% higher at £194.2m. Some 290 of its 463 UK stores have now been modernised. European operations returned to the black, recording an operating profit of £100,000 in the period compared to a loss of £1.4m last time. Walsh expects full year profits to be

towards the upper end of forecasts of £8m-£11m. Meanwhile, founder Lord Harris cut his and his family’s shareholding in Carpetright last month, despite the value of shares being almost a third lower than earlier in the year. In December Harris Ventures sold two major chunks of shares, reducing its shareholding to below 3%. As recently as 13 August Lord Harris and Martin Harris owned 19.33% of the chain’s shares, including Harris Venture’s 12.5% shareholding. Since Lord Harris stepped down as non-executive chairman in September, the family has steadily reduced its shareholding despite the weak share price. At about the time of the share sale Carpetright shares were £3.53 – 32% lower than year before. The 52-week high was £628.5 on 3 April with a low of £3.0075 on 13 October.

Commercial prize for design competition

New edition: Ulster Carpets has relaunched its consumer website, giving it the look of a glossy interiors magazine. The new look reflects the current Ulster brand, showcasing both contemporary ranges such as Boho Collection and more traditional ranges such as Glenmoy. Functionality has been improved, allowing consumers to search by style, colour and range. It will automatically generate coordinating carpet options and allow customers to order samples. An Inspiration section features trends, new images and an interior planner to aid choosing the right carpet and a blog hosting a range of topics from advice on vintage styling to upcycling ideas. For the first time, Ulster Carpets is live on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest, and will be sharing company news, range launches and interiors advice and inspiration.

Student design competition New Design Britain has secured it first commercial tie-up. The five finalists from the accessories category of the awards will have the opportunity to showcase their designs in an exclusive commercial space on the Achica website. ‘We are extremely proud and excited to have Achica’s support as sponsor of our accessories category. As a market-leading online brand, we are thrilled to have its help in bringing graduate design talent to the forefront of the international interiors industry,’ says Allie Little, New Design Britain programme curator.

‘Good design is at the heart of the Achica philosophy and as a British company, we are delighted to give something back by supporting the design stars of the future. Achica has a captive market of almost five million diverse but discerning members across Europe and it is the perfect platform to showcase the best of British graduate talent,’ says Liam Butler, Achica brand director. New Design Britain has six categories: accessories, furniture, fabrics, surfaces, interior design and architecture. Finalists will exhibit their work in the New Design Britain showcase at the May Design Series show.

Leekes’ profits jump to £2.3m Interiors chain Leekes has seen profits leap in the first half of the year. EBITDA rose by £1.5m to £2.3m in the six months the end of September. Like for like sales increased by 8%. Although turnover figures were not disclosed, the chain had sales of £51.29m in the year to 31 March 2013. Leekes says its investment in marketing has seen ‘particularly strong performances in the larger investment categories, typically linked to home-moving, such as fitted kitchens, where sales have grown by 30%, as well as our furniture departments, conservatories, windows and doors, and bathrooms, which have all achieved double digit sales growth.’ It has made substantial investments over the past few years with the opening of a flagship store in Coventry in 2012, a £1m modernisation programme at the Cross Hands store and the refurbishment of furniture floors in the Melksham, Bilston and Llantrisant branches. ‘We are delighted to see that this continuing investment is having a significant effect on both our sales and profitability and positions us perfectly to take advantage of the more active housing market,’ says Emma Leeke, Leekes Retail md. The chain’s strong performance has continued to build with sales in November up by £1m. There has been growth across its categories, including further rises in upholstery and bed departments and good dining and bedroom furniture sales growth after a period of level sales. ‘This continued and accelerating sales growth means that we can look forward to further improvements in profitability for the remainder of our financial year,’ she adds.

Show goes on for Wellemobel German bedroom and office furniture manufacturer Wellemobel insists it will still exhibit at IMM Cologne despite filing for insolvency. The insolvency gives the company, which has 930 employees, time to carry out a restructuring. Volker Meurer, Wellemobel ceo, says the plan has the support of banks, credit insurers and business partners and could be complete by mid-2015. Meurer blamed what he said was subsidised low-cost

10

competition from Poland, saying products were sold for less than Wellemobel’s raw material costs. Sales had dropped to the extent that cashflow would be ‘too tight’ in December, he adds. Sales of standard products fell from 70% of sales to 30%, but to respond to the market changes more investment is required in new machinery. Wellemobel’s insolvency process, designed to allow companies to continue, was introduced in 2012.

All events will now take place at the same time

Proposte makeover Fabric exhibition Proposte is undergoing a major shake-up involving fringe events and expanding its exhibitor criteria to include non-European companies, as it reflects continuing globalisation. ‘This decision is the direct consequence of the deep and real transformation that the soft furnishings market has undergone with an ever-increasing boost towards world globalisation. Our choice was carefully considered and assessed, taking into account the positive opinion expressed by the majority of exhibitors. The selection and qualification criteria, pursued since our first edition, will not be altered in any way. Only high-profile production companies, recognised for the high level of their collections, their fair trade and compliance with international rules of ethics and sustainability, will therefore have access to Proposte,’ says Piercarlo Viganò, Proposte president. The new policy comes into effect for this year’s show (27-29 April), with Turkish companies Dina Vanelli, Penelope and Marteks taking part. ‘This process will continue for subsequent editions should we identify other international leaders who match the required criteria,’ adds Viganò. To clamp down on fringe events, there will be a new event that will have the same dates as Proposte. International Observatory will take place in locations such as the Grand Hotel of Como, Cernobbio Shed and Villa Bernasconi, with participants no longer able to open before Proposte begins.

Spring event postponed The Spring Floorcoverings Exhibition has been postponed until next year. SFE was due to take place from 3-5 March in Brighton, but will now be held from 2-4 March 2016. Stewart Crofts, Norco director, says several major brands are unable to attend in 2015, but have expressed

firm interest for 2016. ‘We are focused on looking after the interests of our exhibitors, the mix and number of exhibitors has to appeal to buyers in London and throughout the south to ensure a high visitor attendance. In this instance it would be unwise to proceed,’ he says.

Big budget ads for Dreams sale Bed chain Dreams is spending £6m on advertising for its winter sale. The campaign will build on the ‘Yawnie’ and ‘Mishaps’ themes from Dreams’ summer and autumn campaigns, and highlights typical family life at Christmas, featuring various members of the family dropping off at key moments over the festive season due to lack of sleep. The campaign encourages people to get a better night’s sleep, in line with Dreams’ ‘Because your sleep matters’ message, launched last year. The chain had Christmas sponsorship on Sky 2 and Channel 5 alongside the broadcast and press campaign which runs until February and features the latest ranges of Dreams products including its new bed frame and multimedia TV bed ranges. Outdoor advertising includes 6, 48 and 96 sheet sites located across the UK, including 48 digital billboards. The campaign also includes the chain’s first video on demand content. ‘This campaign reinforces the Dreams’ philosophy “Because your sleep matters” with a touch of humour, but with the important underlying message that a restful night’s sleep is beneficial to everyone in their everyday lives. It also underpins the supporting theme of Better sleep means a better you,’ says Lisa Bond, Dreams marketing director.

Your questions answered Helen Kershaw, Guardsman head of marketing, answers your questions on product protection

Q

One of our customers has told us that during the family’s Christmas lunch the dining table suffered a few spills and stains including water marks. She doesn’t have a protection plan as it’s an old table and we didn’t have anything specific we could help her with. Is there anything we could get in for such cases in the future?

A

The Christmas season does seem to be a particularly tough time for furniture so it’s not unusual for customers to be looking for products and services to repair this type of damage. One solution would be for you to carry a range of furniture care kits. These are available for a variety of furniture types such as leather, fabric, wood, glass and marble, and generally contain a range of products to take care of the everyday cleaning and care of the furniture, along with some specific items to tackle problems such as staining or light cosmetic damage. For example, the Guardsman Wood Care Collection contains a dusting cloth, silicone free polish with UV protector and a gentle wood cleaner to deal with the day-to-day care. In addition it includes a set of wood dye touch up markers to repair damaged edges and, for your customer’s specific problem, a ring and mark remover cloth. This specially treated cloth is perfect for removing minor blemishes, stains and ring marks from sealed wood surfaces. Not only do care kits allow you the chance to resolve these types of issues, they can also add value to your customer and your business if sold alongside the furniture itself.

RUGS

Eclectic geometric A different angle on rug design Deirdre Dyson’s 2015 rug collection is quite a departure from recent themes, with nine designs that interplay linear and graphic forms. ‘My 2015 Illusion collection presented my hand-knotted makers with the most difficult challenge to date. The geometric designs may look deceptively simple, but the intricacy of workmanship involved is astounding. I have used colour grading in

A traditional future Vale-Bridgecraft has expanded its network of show centres and updated its logo

Left: Amalfi with high buttoned back Below: The new look advertising and brand presentation highlights the brand heritage and provenance Bottom: A ValeBridgecraft show centre is based in Harewood Yard, Harewood, near Leeds

Vale-Bridgecraft’s show centres continue to boost the brand in both volume and value terms with the Bridgecraft ranges especially benefiting from the expertise of the centres’ staff. The orders directly benefit Bridgecraft retailers within the show centre catchment areas. Because of this success another centre has been opened at the Harewood House estate, near Leeds, further growing the brand’s Yorkshire heartland. Centres that attract customers who are also looking for a day out, perhaps with lunch at a nearby attraction, are proving the most successful. Harewood House, home of the Earl and Countess of Harewood and one of England’s greatest country houses with an outstanding art collection, Adam interiors and Chippendale furniture, attracted almost 185,000 visitors in 2013. To support the brand in both its own show centres and also to drive footfall towards retailers, Vale-Bridgecraft is increasing its already large investment in media spending with advertising in the national press and Sunday supplements in January alongside targeted titles such as National Trust

32

Interiors Monthly January 2015

Magazine, which has a circulation of more than 2m, the Yorkshire Evening Post and Yorkshire Life. Further show centres, higher media spending and launches of a number of product ranges, including Bridgecraft Choices, a value-added luxury product which includes bespoke elements which target the most design conscious and demanding customers, meant it was time to also review the branding. Continuing to target the older, more discerning consumer, the brand redesign still incorporates the swatch square but now features a more modern, crisper, dark magenta shade and an updated typeface. ‘New style advertising and, later in the year a revamped website, prove that despite having over 100 years of history and maintaining all the old, traditional techniques and quality materials in its product ranges, when it comes to marketing and growing the brand Vale-Bridgecraft is definitely concentrating on the future,’ says Stuart Chadwick, Vale-Bridgecraft md. Encore combines fibre and foam

Soft cushion treatment Fibreline is producing even more cushions Such has been the success of the Encore cushion fillings that in 2014 Fibreline doubled capacity to meet demand. Launched in 2010, it has two variants: fibre and feather. Cushions have the look and feel of fibre or feather with the recovery of foam. Encore-Fibre has been awarded the FIRA Gold seal and in FIRA tests it outperformed all other fibre cushions. The Encore cushion range retains the casual look, and with a four-year guarantee against sagging, gives retailers confidence in the performance of fibre and feather in seat cushion applications. Its USP is a core of high performance seating foam that allows the cushion to ‘spring’ back to its original shape again and again.

34

Interiors Monthly January 2015

An Encore seat cushion has the added advantage of being lighter than a similar sized fibre or feather cushion making it easier to pick up and plump. Plus less frequent plumping is required as the simple action of regularly turning the cushion is enough to maintain its performance. The shortage of trained sewing machinists is an industry-wide problem as the skilled workers get older. Fibreline is looking long term at its capabilities to satisfy demand for UK-made product in the years to come and has been working with local colleges to tackle the shortage. Established in 1982, Fibreline was one of the first companies to manufacture carded fibre cushions for use in the UK upholstery market. Over the years it has

grown to be a leading supplier of not only polyester fibre, but also feather and foam cushions. As a manufacturer of all three fillings it has been at the leading edge of developing a range of combination fillings for designers trying to offer something different to the norm. All Fibreline products are made to tight specifications and undergo stringent quality checks at each stage of production. Only materials from recognised suppliers are used and it has a full range of fillings and combinations of fillings that will allow companies to achieve the best possible quality within specific budgets. Partners in time Sir Kenneth Grange and Jack Smith’s first collaboration was the April sofa for Modus, which was followed by Apriletta. They discuss working together, what’s changed and what they have in common

Sir Kenneth Grange has designed some of the most iconic and familiar products that shape our daily lives such as Kodak cameras, the interior layout and exterior styling of the nose cone of the InterCity 125 train, Kenwood food mixers, the Adshel bus shelter and the rural post box for Royal Mail in 1998. The Design Museum held a retrospective of Grange’s work in 2011.

36

Interiors Monthly January 2015

Jack Smith graduated from the Design Products course at the Royal College of Art in 2011. He founded SmithMatthias, a London-based design studio with Gemma Matthias in 2012. It endeavours to create timeless designs that will match the longevity of its materials and have a relevance and usefulness in the long term.

Grange Smith is a collaboration of experience and youth first realised for Modus in the April sofa. KG ‘Thinking about how Jack and I met, it’s because I have a job as visiting professor at The Royal College of Art. It’s all a pleasure, they just like me to talk to people. Jack was one of the students there.’ JS ‘It’s a two-year course but they don’t split you up into year one and year two, you all sit together. Then there are subdivisions called platforms with smaller groups which sorts out what you want to do. In my case within the Design Products course, I studied on the platforms led by Luke Pearson and Michael Marriott. Kenneth would come in a handful of times a year.’ KG ‘I think it was a very good time: the coalescence of people there. The tutors are not like formal teachers, they are participants, a great deal rubs off in both directions, in my case very much. It’s quite natural that I migrate

towards those who have come through a constructing type background and Jack was very much of that mould. Jack graduated and I subsequently asked him to help me with a few things. Last year I was approached by Modus to do a sofa and it seemed to me Jack was the natural ally in that, and it’s grown from there.’ JS ‘I find designing with Kenneth a very relaxed and mutual process. We have a start out point and we have discussions and it evolves like that, which I find really nice. With other people, sometimes their ideas get fast-tracked.’ KG ‘Fundamentally we share a lot of the same beliefs and enthusiasms.’ JS ‘Some 90% per cent of our conversations aren’t necessarily to do with design. It’s more about things that we like, things that annoy us, it’s almost like we’re friends above all else. We’re not formal colleagues, the set up is something different. We have a lot in common.’ KG ‘We have a tremendous amount of common ground. It’s a very happy arrangement. I am always on the lookout for the commercial angle. An example of

38

Interiors Monthly January 2015

this is when we were talking in the latter stages of designing April. I had been to a hotel in the West Country. I said it looked to me that this hotel could be a perfect place for April but that it was too big. Modus said something similar simultaneously. Out of that came the proposition for Apriletta: it might well open up another angle in another sector.

‘It’s almost like we’re friends above all else’ It’s very much of the same character; one is the child of the other.’ JS ‘There’s never any raised voices or stamping of the feet. There were one or two things that we ummed and aahed about, but nothing serious.’ KG ‘I haven’t found any time when there’s been a taste disagreement. Jack contributed a very important detail, that of tailoring; the smoothness of function, the elegance of line and that

the product should have a good profile whichever way you look at it, like a decent suit. They brought the fine detailing, the seaming, the elegance of the detail of where the cushions meet.’ JS ‘Because of the time Kenneth has spent in the industry there’s confidence in his decisions. For me all through college and university I’ve been quite shy, but when I go to meetings with Kenneth, I take on a lot of his presence, how he presents, and I find that invaluable. When I’m with him in meetings I feel a lot more relaxed.’ KG ‘In terms of the way the industry’s evolved, there’s a very big change in the communication process. Designers today are having to be a master of many skills. Jack was talking recently about being familiar with a range of software. I was reminded that in my office when we had computers, there was really only one program. But now, there’s a huge chunk of Jack’s grey matter that I have no connection with at all but that he takes for granted. It’s very much about the complexity of the software.’ JS ‘People are much more reliant on computers for designing. These

Go back a few years, there’s a certain knowledge that had to be behind that design, a certain amount of skill. I find good designers have that behind them. They are great at drawings, modelling, prototyping and they have a good knowledge of the industry beyond Googling it.’ KG ‘We could have been very good friends even if we’d had very different jobs. ‘Occasionally somebody does something that’s so blindingly obvious when it’s brought to you but you’ve been happy with it before. My favourite example of that is the sphere of white glass light fitting. Jasper Morrison comes along and all he does is slightly squash it and that’s the wittiest thing to have done and it’s transformed this familiar thing.’ JS ‘I find that some designers use their personality to sell themselves. There are great designers who have personalities behind them and I feel that does help in their publicity. Jasper Morrison, Barber & Osgerby, they let their work do the talking. Their work is really considered.’ KG ‘Modus as a company is, from our perspective, just about the right size. There aren’t great tiers of management.

It makes dealing with it very agreeable. The overall benefit is the scale.’ JS ‘I think Modus is a refreshing, stand out, British manufacturer and brand. I admire many of its products and have been very excited about working with it. I’ve found Modus very interesting to work with, always happy to consider different options and with its upholstery manufacturing being in the UK, it’s great that we can take regular trips to see the prototypes being made by very skilled upholsterers and to develop the designs closely with them.’ KG ‘It’s novel that we’re not in a room together every day. We live separate lives but it makes for a very agreeable partnership.’ Visit: www.modusfurniture.co.uk

‘If you look at the chair from one view it looks just like the Calla lily’

Nurturing Lily Michael Sodeau, the designer responsible for Modus’ Lily chair, explains the process behind the product and why cold cure moulding was essential

‘I’ve probably got more and more controlled in the way I design. This means as well as aesthetic freedom, you can put energy and confidence where it is required. Plus the investment in the tooling is such that you cannot get it wrong, you just have to get it right. I don’t make a lot of models these days. I’m also probably more consistent in my approach. ‘Lily came about as a result of the Library sofa. I designed the Library sofa in 2013. That design, which is quite a fluid, highbacked sofa, won a Design Guild Mark, and was originally designed for a residential scheme. It was the starting point for designing the Lily chair, which also has a high back and armrest. While this is a different object, it uses a similar vocabulary. Its silhouette is not too familiar for a lobby

chair, but it is something you can sit comfortably on. ‘The idea for the name came from the Calla lily. It’s quite simple really: if you look at the chair from one view it looks just like this type of lily when it is opened up. It’s like two folded over wings with armrests. ‘A cold cure mould was crucial to the process. The Library sofa had the largest cold cure mould. This process allows you to have a conformity of curves and you can achieve far more of a fluid shape. Every single time, it is identical. It is a very soft shape. It gives you flexibility. You could have something larger but it wouldn’t be quite as light. It’s tapered to the base and has a thin edge, you can have different thicknesses in different areas. The process gives you a huge amount of freedom to

get complete shapes, far more so than with upholstery. ‘The process started with full-size card and paper models. We made them again and again before giving Modus the dimensions. We then took fibreglass and reinforced it with polyurethane as a liquid. It then expanded as a foam. ‘The chair also has a steel frame so you can put some structure where you need it. There are clever details on the stitching. In the chair itself there is a fly which is slit through most of the fabric which keeps everything taut and tailored. This gives the chair a level of precision. ‘This simple upholstery gives it clean, uninterrupted lines and also a lightweight appearance. ‘The different base options are important. There is a fourlegged timber base, this gives a softer appeal to the design so is more suitable for hotel environments. Then there is the tubular metal base which is a slightly more technical element, a swivel base with a simple cylinder column with a disc for the floor, so there’s an option for every budget. ‘One of the advantages of this chair is the amount of flexibility you can have with colour and texture. You can have a different colour of upholstery on the back and on the seat and you can even have a different material on the interior to the exterior for maximum flexibility.’ Visit: www.michaelsodeau.com

Michael Sodeau Michael Sodeau studied product design at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design where he graduated in 1994. He was a founding partner in Inflate, and set up his own design studio Michael Sodeau Partnership in 1997. Aside from the Lily chair and Library sofa, he has designed a number of products for Modus. Among these are The Noughts and Crosses stools, a modern take on the traditional stool and available in two heights for either bar or dining table use. Seal of approval The Good Housekeeping Institute has approved Rest Assured’s Traditional Pocket Collection As a brand that prides itself on its commitment to delivering quality products made in Britain, Rest Assured already puts its products through its own SATRA accredited laboratory to test comfort and durability. But now, its Traditional Pocket Collection has been approved by the Good Housekeeping Institute, making Rest Assured the first bed brand in the country to receive a coveted accreditation from one of the leading consumer testing bodies in the UK. The collection – which incorporates 10 handmade beds, including the Heritage Collection and the new 2800 Memory Wool – faced rigorous quality assurance assessments and was well received by the GHI testers, being praised for providing comfort and a good night’s sleep. ‘With 90 years of product testing under its belt, 90% of consumers say they would trust products carrying the Good Housekeeping logo and 91% admit they are more likely to buy a product with it than a similar product without it,’ says Grace Moorhouse, Rest Assured brand marketing manager. The GHI is a household name that is widely recognised and respected by consumers, and has the power to impact on purchases. ‘The GHI is such an iconic and wellrespected consumer research body, so it’s a fantastic accolade to have formal recognition for the Traditional Pocket Collection. Approval is highly sought after and will support our retailers in providing customers with even more assurance of the quality of Rest Assured products and the comfort they deliver,’ adds Moorhouse. Three steps to growth Protect-A-Bed’s approach helps lift sales ‘The first is to select a Good, Better, Best strategy. Placing the three product ranges on show at different pricing levels, allows every individual customer to see the value, no matter the cost of the mattress. With this offering being displayed on a bright, eye-catching display stand, a customer’s attention is quickly held.’ Protect-A-Bed’s new light stands will be on display at the January Furniture Show. ‘Next the company trains the retail sales force, empowering individuals to become experts in mattress protection. By understanding the reasons why every mattress needs protection positively affects sales. This is maximised by rewarding and incentivising the sales team, to create momentum that energises sales. ‘Finally, monitoring results allows accurate growth figures to be measured.

Over the past year Protect-A-Bed has invested heavily in its retail customers, helping many constantly grow sales of mattress protectors. Archers Sleep Centre, for example, saw sales grow by 140%. Success within this niche category is driven by Protect-A-Bed’s expert knowledge and a hunger from the retailer to grow sales within this sector. Protect-A-Bed is a global specialist in mattress protection. Its protectors contain Miracle Membrane that creates a waterproof, healthy sleep zone by prohibiting the growth of bacteria. This not only provides a comfortable night’s sleep, but also increases the life of the mattress. Simon Zamet, Protect-A-Bed ceo, says that successful sales growth of mattress protectors, for any retailer, can be achieved with some simple but effective strategies.

54

Protect-A-Bed offers a Good, Better, Best strategy

As specialists within this category, we know when certain steps are followed; sales of mattress protectors grow significantly. Material knowledge Kaymed’s latest introductions make great use of technology Kaymed’s aim is to ensure consumers experience the most advanced range of beds available in the UK. ‘Our new materials are developed, manufactured by and exclusive to Kaymed, and are designed to combine sublime levels of comfort, industry leading pressure relief and sleep surface temperature regulation,’ says David Moffitt, Kaymed ceo. The company has more than a century’s expertise of sleep technology and is an innovator in gel and visco-elastic technologies. Its extensive knowledge and development of new materials has seen it shake up the North American bed industry. Introductions include Therma-Phase, which Moffitt says represents a significant step forward in temperature regulation technology as it combines a high-density visco-elastic with an infusion of phasechange gel crystals. The gel works constantly to absorb, store and release body heat to maintain the ideal sleep surface temperature of 30°C-32°C. ‘This is achieved via a chain reaction at molecular level rather than by treating materials with sprays or treatments, ensuring the material works infinitely. The result is a material that provides the body with the optimum level of comfort, support and pressure relief – essential for a restful night’s sleep,’ he says. Mighty Bed offers a firmer feel and the correct level of support for consumers of all shapes and sizes. ‘This range was an instant hit with retailers at the autumn shows last year due to the combination of high levels of quality fillings supplying comfort and a spring system design that will cope with heavy use. Mighty Bed is supplied with what must be the most durable heavy duty base available in the UK offered with a 15-year warranty, and I am certain that Mighty Bed will be an essential asset to any bed retailer’s range,’ reckons Moffitt. Five times a winner Kaymed was named as Harvey Norman’s Bedding Supplier of the Year for the fifth successive year last month. The award is chosen by the staff and managers of the Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland chain’s bed departments. ‘This award recognises the bed supplier which has provided the highest standard of customer service and the most progressive product innovations over the preceding 12 months. Kaymed, once again, impressed us in these areas as well as their overall retail partnership approach, ensuring that not only did their product meet the highest level of quality but also the service provided to the stores from all aspects of the business met this same standard,’ says Robbie Auckram, Harvey Norman Ireland general manager of bedding. Great expectations Hopes are high for Himolla’s latest launch ‘Himolla has a 60 year tradition of craftsmanship and has been building world-beating recliner chairs for three decades. But, as a company, we are forward looking; always keen to embrace new concepts and apply the latest technology,’ says Sandra Gabler, Himolla UK and Ireland country manager. She says the Fusion collection is a case in point. ‘It combines true craftsmanship with modern elegance in design, plus recliner technology that includes clever, integrated footrests to make spacewasting ottomans obsolete. Multiadjustments to seat height and backrest – via gas cylinders – a choice of colour on the star-shaped bases, and a range of luxurious leathers in a selection of colours have all helped ensure Fusion enjoyed overwhelming acclaim at the Himolla At Home Show in October and at the Belgium Furniture Fair. ‘Expectations are very high for the launch of the Fusion collection at the AIS Furniture Show. We foresee Fusion spearheading our local and national marketing campaigns, as well as providing a new sales channel for contemporary recliners – especially important in our drive to strengthen cooperation with our current business partners,’ says Gabler. Global shop window Singapore is attracting more exhibitors from Europe

64

Interiors Monthly January 2015

The global furniture market was worth £277.9bn at production prices in 2013, a rise of 4% on 2102, according to CSIL Centre for Industrial Studies. CSIL also predicts that world consumption for furniture will increase by 3.4% in real terms in 2015, where Asia continues to see fast expansion. It is against this backdrop that furniture manufacturers continue flocking into the region to uncover potential opportunities. ‘The show has gone from strength to strength in the time it’s been around,’ says Ernie Koh, IFFS chairman. ‘IFFS 2015 welcomes many repeat exhibitors, as well as yet another pool of first-time exhibitors into its fold. We’re also excited about having a larger European showing across the trilogy of IFFS, The Décor Show and Hospitality 360° in March, which reflects how all eyes are indeed on Asia.’ IFFS attracts a good number of first-time exhibitors to the show each year. Companies exhibiting for the first time at IFFS 2015 include Beltempo (Peru), Fatihtr (Turkey), Harbour Outdoor (Australia), Hirata Chair (Japan), Interfurn (Hong Kong), Jimmy Possum (Australia), Gus Design (Canada), and Rin Crossing (Japan). The number of exhibitors from Europe is 20% higher. Visitors can look forward to viewing collections from G Cleyberg (Belgium), Oliver B (Italy), Stones (Italy), and Umbrosa (Belgium), to name a few.

In addition, EU Business Avenues will present 40 other companies in The Décor Show under the banner of European Design, featuring businesses from countries including Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and UK. In conjunction with IFFS, Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC) is organising the anchor event for Singapore Design Week – SingaPlural 2015. From 10-16 March, this fourth edition of SingaPlural celebrates design and marks the first time that a local team of curators – PLUS Collaboratives and GOVT – will bring cohesiveness to the event through a well-defined festival construct. SingaPlural is hosted with eight other network partners of DesignS, representing an international platform for talents across the creative industries to engage and evoke the design senses of visitors through installations, exclusively curated design spaces, and symposiums.

66

Interiors Monthly January 2015

For the first time the main programme of SingaPlural will be housed within one iconic location at 99 Beach Road, the former central police station. Located near to Singapore’s arts and heritage district, this consolidates the festival’s contents within the city centre into a single venue, allowing the public to have an immersive experience of SingaPlural and its theme, Process. In addition to the activities at 99 Beach Road, the festival also extends its presence to the Singapore EXPO with SingaPlural@IFFS for the duration of the show. The SingaPlural Design Hall will feature the Asian Star showcase and the Furniture Design Award in a retrospective showcase curated by Anon Pairot of Anon Pairot Studio. ‘While we’ve always celebrated design at the heart of IFFS, SingaPlural as a festival allows the idea to play out fully. SingaPlural gels the various facets of the creative spectrum together, inspiring the public and highlighting the possibilities that design can offer them in their lives,’ adds Koh. Word on the high street TCS is responding to stockists’ wants with a focus on rejuvenating town centres ‘Looking back throughout history there have been traditions and crafts that have faded out and some completely lost over time. We can often reflect and ponder to ourselves – how did such a beautiful craft become extinct? Why was that custom not valued and upheld,’ says Thomas Small, TCS md. ‘Some fear that the tradition of town centres and the bustling high streets are at risk of perishing, with the focus of the consumer having shifted to shopping centres and retail parks, leaving many high streets feeling forgotten and barren. In a bid to maintain and uphold the tradition of high street trading, we have taken the time to talk to independent retailers across the sector, listening to their individual concerns and their ideas to stimulate a revival within the high street.’ TCS has spent recent years establishing its extensive product offer as well as producing concepts such as Your Sofa, Your Way and TCS for Less to provide its stockists with a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Many independent retailers are increasingly feeling that they are being overlooked by suppliers in favour of their competitors, whether they are multiples, or just larger independents, says Small. TCS wants to work with all independents, not just a selective few, he says.

Interiors Monthly January 2015

Leonardo with cinema extension

When asked what changes a supplier can make to benefit the retailer, most of the answers were things that TCS had already identified as areas of improvement, but hearing it from the customers added a sense of urgency to the matter, according to Small. ‘This initiative has led to an entirely new concept for the show. The aim for 2015 is to reinforce all the positive elements we received from our customer research and to focus on improving any areas that customers had not been entirely satisfied with.

‘So, for example, everything that will be on the stand will be a stocked product. This means everything retailers will see at the show will be available in those colours for immediate delivery all year round. ‘The reason for this, of course, is that quick delivery on items is one of the key ways that independents can distinguish themselves in the market. They know that if their bestsellers are available for immediate delivery all year round it gives them an edge over the competition.

‘The objective is to provide independent retailers with the right mix of product and service’ Colorado

‘We are also introducing a new innovation on selected ranges, whereby the combinations can be mixed and matched to offer greater freedom of choice to the retailer,’ he explains. The company is updating its internal systems, which will see the order process speeded up and when customers receive confirmation of their order, they will have the ability to track it whether it is in production or in transit and customers will also receive an estimated time of arrival and a tracking number automatically.

Changes are also being made to the TCS for Less concept. Small says it was a challenge to convince people to try something new but when they did, the advantages became clear. ‘TCS for Less enables us to work on less of a margin as a supplier and we can in turn pass on these savings to our customers,’ he says. ‘With the savings that are achievable with TCS for Less retailers have recognised that rather than save £45 on a £450 sofa they can save £100 on a £1,000 sofa and of course the better the

savings, the greater the interest. At the show TCS for Less will be showing a higher level of product than what it launched with last January. ‘The objective of this campaign is to provide independent retailers with the right mix of product and service to be able to compete with those around them. If suppliers offer precise support in the correct areas there is no reason that independent businesses shouldn’t thrive and life on the high street will be rejuvenated,’ he adds. Building on success After enjoying record sales in the run-up to Christmas, Julian Bowen is launching several products at the show. The company’s recliner chairs proved to be big sellers throughout 2014 and the Riva rise and recliner chair will see a new cappuccino colour chenille option. Malmo has been extended with a vibrating massage chair featuring eight vibrating pads and a relaxing heated pad in the lumbar area. The Pullman rise and recliner chair in chestnut brown leather has a simple to use handset operating a dual motor that enables the back and footrest to be adjusted independently,

also raising you to a standing position or lowering into the seat gently. Its range of Clic-Clac sofabeds has been expanded with Manhattan, a contemporary geometric upholstered design in a soft-touch dark brown faux leather. The back and armrests fully recline and transform into a double bed. Beds continue to be a strong product area, showing significant growth in 2014. The new Marquis Black Nickel bed is embellished with fine crystal finials, a sprung slatted base and is available in 135cm and 150cm sizes. Stone White is a fresh finish for Rebecca, one of the

company’s bestselling metal beds. A low foot end option on the Amsterdam Oak bed will also be launched. Additions to the children’s furniture range will see the Atlas metal bunkbed in a gloss white finish and a new white painted guest underbed that can be stored under the Barcelona bunk and the white painted beds in the Julian Bowen collection. The company will also introduce a 56-page catalogue featuring roomset photography. Visit: Julian-bowen.co.uk

Quiet confidence Achieving 40% growth over the past two years has not been without its issues but Mark Devany, Winsor Furniture founder, is now quietly confident. ‘In the market a little more optimism abounds and our existing collections, including Stockholm, Toledo and Isabel, are performing superbly. Most of our stockists are experiencing year on year growth and our exclusivity policy ensures they can achieve good profit margins on every one of our distinctive designs.’ He says the company’s hard work on all aspects of the business model during 2013 and 2014 means retailers now have a high level of customer service and a high percentage of on-time deliveries.

‘Our business is probably a little unique: UK quality checks and final preparation by a team of craftsmen including cabinet makers, polishers and upholsterers brings about rectification of most issues prior to dispatch. A regular feature of the Winsor offering includes customers’ own fabrics applied to seating, beds, etc plus specials and customisations enabling retailers to close sales that would otherwise fail to even get off the ground,’ explains Devany. Design is at the core of Winsor’s future plans and is its key point of difference. ‘Since inception in 1987, our aim has been to be different. Recent collections such as Stockholm are instantly recognisable as Winsor products and

have become market leaders with design features many have admired,’ he says. The company will introduce Abella and Marbury at the show. Abella is a contemporary collection based on French styling and made fashionable with contemporary paint colours and chic fabrics. Specification includes concealed soft close runners on all drawers, dovetailing and quality fittings. Marbury is a transitional collection of dining and occasional designs crafted in solid mango with parquetry tops and door panels. Its proportions and design aim to satisfy the quality conscious and ever more demanding consumer. Visit: www.winsor.co.uk

It will certainly find favour among those who don’t like the look of archetypal children’s

Visitors will also see the new Wansford collection, Kettle’s lowest cost oak range. warmth of oak to come through, lending a quality feel and look to the collection,’ he says. ‘We’ve introduced Wansford to be among the most competitive oak furniture available today and it certainly is our cheapest ever oak collection. Spring Fair Birmingham 1-5 February

The Home section has been transformed for 2015

Ever present More than 3,000 exhibitors will fill the NEC More than 3,000 exhibitors will take part at the Spring Fair, an increase of 10% on 2014, including 400 making their show debut. The fair covers 14 market sectors: Home; Gift; Contemporary Gift; Greetings and Gift; Children’s Gift, Toys and Gadgets; Christmas Gift, Floral and Seasonal Decoration; Table and Kitchen; Fashion Jewellery, Accessories and Luggage; Body and Bath; The Summerhouse; The Party Show; Retail Shop; Jewellery and Watch Birmingham and Gift, Home & Volume. The Gift, Home and Volume in Halls 10, 11 and 12 will

open one day earlier on Saturday 31 January. About 70,000 retailers are expected to visit where they will see the unveiling of the transformed Home sector – formerly branded Home Interiors and Furniture – which has been relocated to Hall 1. This strategic move to the front of the show reflects both the strong growth in this sector as well as the reorientation towards the upper end of the home market, with hundreds of design-led suppliers choosing Spring Fair as their prime new product showcase for the year ahead, according to organiser i2i.

Among the first-timers at the event are: Chic Antique, Authentic Models, Light & Living, Du Bout Du Monde, Baroque International, Neuhofer Holz, Fuzhou Bailey Furniture, and Carpet Export Promotion Council. The Home section has increased by 64% on 2014, with more than 200 companies taking part, including Coach House, Voyage Decoration, CIMC, Evans Lichfield, Robert Harrop Designs, Premier Housewares, Hill Interiors, Dutch Imports, Pacific Lifestyle and McGowan & Rutherford. ‘The show represents the largest

As Home moves to Hall 1, the rebranded Table and Kitchen area – formerly Kitchen, Dining and Housewares – will relocate to Hall 9, another strategic move that places this sector next to both The Summerhouse in Hall 8 and the main Gift offering in Hall 5. The new area for Table and Kitchen also puts it within easy reach of Europe’s largest volume offering in Halls 10, 11 and 12. Also new for 2015 is the Retail Shop brand, which has evolved from the ecommerce zones at Spring and Autumn Fair. Retail Shop exhibitors in Hall 4 represent a multitude of products and services essential to successful multichannel retailing, including in-store and online solutions, logistics and fulfilment experts, marketing platforms, payment providers and packaging specialists. Authentic Models is adding to its collection With a broad assortment of coordinated furniture, lighting and accessories, Authentic Models is an always interesting source of objects and inspiration for the interiors industry and 2015 is shaping up to be no exception. It is exhibiting at the Spring Fair after taking part in Maison & Objet and before participating in Ambiente and Maison & Objet Asia. ‘From aged propellers to hang behind a bar or in a man cave, to desks for all sorts of rooms, to oversized lamps to create a serious statement in a public area, a visit to an Authentic Models showroom or trade fair stand is like visiting a particularly quaint antique shop,’ says Eric Hanson, Authentic Models manager. Which is exactly how the company likes it. Authentic Models was started in Amsterdam in the late 1960s by Haring Piebenga, who saw a market for reproduction antiques at a lower price than the real thing. Today, the core concept remains the same: unique objects crafted and inspired by originals.

‘From hand-built airplane models to a complete furniture collection to a series of nostalgic board games, Authentic Models offers a little something for the explorer in us all. Each of the items has a story behind it and passionate travellers are drawn to the history and intrigue. Authentic Models’ items regularly turn up at auction, which is a testament to our commitment to quality,’ he says. The company’s products can be found at finer retailers across the UK and Europe, as well as in hotels and international merchandising campaigns. Recent merchandising partners include Louis Vuitton, Maison Piper Heidsieck, Brooks Brothers and Ralph Lauren. Items added to the collection for this year include Prohibition era cocktail shakers, the ultimate gentleman’s Valet and a coffee table featuring a built-in antique globe. Oki Sato has been named Designer of the Year. Born in 1977 in Toronto, Canada, in 2002 Sato completed a MA in architecture at the Waseda University, Tokyo and founded the Nendo studio in the city, before opening a studio in Milan in 2005. Nendo, meaning modelling clay, expresses the desire of having certain flexibility and the ability to reinvent oneself. The designer takes his inspiration from the Japanese uncluttered style to create a language of his time. Sato’s philosophy is reflected in his designs, thanks to which he transforms the interactions of people with the objects surrounding them by creating a parenthesis in their life. This desire is found in the uncluttered and characteristic shapes of his designs, to which he always adds

PROTECTION

Consumers value the peace of mind protection plans give

Problem solver

Phil Griffin

Guardsman’s latest research has provided valuable information on protection plans Protection plans, guarantees and warranties can be confusing for both the end consumer as well as retail staff, and with the furniture sector under increased scrutiny from regulatory bodies and consumer watchdog groups, it is essential that the industry focuses on providing customers with clearly defined and compliant products and services, says Phil Griffin, Guardsman md. Guardsman has undertaken extensive research to gain insight of how the end consumer perceives furniture protection plans and what their expectations are in terms of the service they will receive. ‘This significant investment has provided incredibly rich information to us and our retail partners, for which we would like to express our thanks to the stores for their fantastic support and allowing us to conduct this at the point of sale,’ he says. The results show that consumers greatly value the peace of mind offered through its protection plans given that they provide solutions to damage that can occur to their new furniture in everyday use. ‘The key challenge is getting this

122

message through at point of sale without them being confused by other add-on warranty sales, such as electrical where the cover is typically orientated to a product failure. This insight has enabled us to completely redevelop our training programme and selling materials which our team of account managers use to support our retail partners across the UK and Republic of Ireland,’ he says. Guardsman has also identified key information relating to regulatory compliance, an area that retailers are increasingly concerned about given the Financial Conduct Authority’s spotlight on insurance products. Griffin says it is essential that consumers are provided with full and objective information when purchasing protection plans, including online transactions. ‘With more furniture than ever before being bought online, Internet sales are a valuable sales opportunity for retailers which we can help them maximise. Through the results of this study we have reviewed retailers’ website transactional processes and adapted our training to ensure that all retail staff are trained on

FCA compliance and that a record of that training is kept in order that we continue to safeguard our retailers’ brand reputation,’ he explains. Providing clear and compliant information to consumers, backed up with excellent customer service and an expert repair service is what the Guardsman business is built on, says Griffin. ‘Our team is consistently resolving challenging and complex claims, delivering customer service excellence and deploying the local technician with the right skillsets for the specific claim, which is why we deliver industry leading first visit fix ratios. It’s what consumers have told us they expect and we work closely in partnership with retailers and technicians to ensure it’s what they receive,’ he adds. Visit: www.guardsman.co.uk

PROTECTION

Solving skin problems Leather furniture needs special treatment Whether it is the natural oils from hair and bodies, accidental spills and staining, or even chemicals from certain types of heart medication being released through the skin, leather furniture is under constant attack. Often a significant expense and a much loved feature in the home, leather furniture deserves regular protection and maintenance. A key part of this is not only regular cleaning, but the application of an effective protection cream, says Ben Staerck, Furniture Clinic md. Understanding leather is key to retailers’ demonstrating expertise and also advising on how to properly care for customers’ leather. Absorbent leathers such as aniline and suedes require more regular treatment than more common pigmented leathers. One of the most visual and effective ways of getting this knowledge across to a customer is a simple ‘absorbency’ test’. Place a drop of water on a leather swatch and rub it lightly with your finger, if it soaks in it is an absorbent leather, if it doesn’t it is likely to be pigmented. Absorbent leather is susceptible to most liquids and stains easily. Protected leather will not absorb the water but must still be protected to ensure the sealant is not worn away. ‘Customers may be shocked to think of how fast a spillage can soak into their new upholstery and will undoubtedly be more keen to protect it. This test is an ideal way to engage with customers and increase the conversion rate for those all important add-on sales. It is vitally important for customers to apply a specialist protection cream as soon as they receive their new leather furniture and every three months thereafter,’ stresses Staerck. Protection cream reinstates absorbent leather’s natural oils and waxes while repelling water-based stains. It should be remembered that sitting on leather causes friction, which eventually wears away the coating causing the item to lose colour and become faded. A good protection cream will absorb this friction and help to prevent any such damage. It

Showing aftercare knowledge makes its easier to sell care kits

Grease stains are common with leather but can be avoided with regular cleaning and maintenance

will also add an invisible barrier to help protect the finish on pigmented leather from wear and tear. All dirt will be held on the protected layer and can be easily wiped clean, making maintenance far less daunting. ‘Educating the consumer on the correct methods to care for their furniture establishes trust and demonstrates the expertise of the

salesperson. Showing aftercare knowledge convinces the customer you are committed to the longevity of their purchase, making it far easier for retailers to sell care plans and care kits. Proper knowledge concerning the care and protection of leather is not just good for the customer, it’s good for sales too,’ adds Staerck. Visit: www.furnitureclinic.co.uk

The heavy metal loft features a planning studio

You have a disused power station in the centre of a large city. Do you convert it into exclusive flats as with Battersea or do you turn it into an interiors store? German retailer and supplier Kare Design chose the latter when it opened its flagship store in Munich last autumn. The 108,000sqft Kare Kraftwerk store occupies the former power station which was built in 1960 and took four years to convert into Munich’s latest shopping mecca. The original transformers, the old crane in the machine shop and views of former boiler sections across three floors create a fascinating ambience for

RETAIL product presentations, which are staged with typical Kare flair and challenge notions of what an interiors store should look like. The store features 13 ‘sandwich rooms’, presented as fully furnished 800sqft flats against a background of bare concrete walls and old fans. The name of these spaces is taken from the sandwich construction of the original building, which also offers extensive views through ingenious gaps in the walls. The fascinating steel structure where views of the exposed concrete ceilings and striking chimneys combine with views of the Bavarian mountains, has become a tourist attraction. Whether it’s a bedroom in the French boudoir style or the kind of retro living room found in central Berlin, in addition to themed furnishing Kraftwerk displays, the entire spectrum of Kare’s collections: cupboards, beds, shelving, sofas, armchairs, rugs, tables, mirrors and much, much more are in-store. Scattered among them, hand-picked artefacts such as a life-sized wooden statue of Ganesh from India create surprises. On the top floor of the ‘heavy metal loft’ between mighty grey steel girders there is a department featuring a professional planning studio for both private and contract furnishing.

Extrasoft greets visitors by the door

Choosing which products to combine was made much easier as Piero Lissoni is the key planner, art director and designer for both brands. The day and night-time scenarios proposed by Living Divani complement the bathroom and kitchen settings from Boffi, recreating the concept of a large, elegantly cosmopolitan house, combining a minimalist style with luxury, and offering an array of ideas and atmospheres. The partnership between the two brands has been successfully tried and tested on the American market at Boffi Soho in New York. On entering the Brompton Road store you are greeted by Extrasoft modular sofas in two-tone dark brown and orange leather, made up of cosy seats, joined to create regular geometrical forms, but with outlines that can be adjusted. The composition is surrounded by Mario Ferrarini’s Kalè stool-tables in white Cristalplant, reminiscent of a stylised flower, while around the kitchen counter are Francesco Rota’s Hinge stools. Near the reception, two Family Chairs by Junya Ishigami create a waiting area that breaks with convention. Alongside the raw sheet metal platform, Lissoni has left his architectural mark, creating an essential link between the window display and the store’s other areas: a relaxation corner, Above and left: The furniture, including Boffi’s Duemilaotto table, breaks up the straight lines of the kitchens
