Time for action There needs to be a workable alternative to business rates, rather than government continuing to ignore the problem The Chancellor has apparently been listening to concerns over business rates. We’ll find out if he has on 8 March in the Budget. Expect a series of hastily put together reliefs to offset the worst of the increases. But applying a sticking plaster and hoping businesses will somehow get used to the increases over the five years of the revaluation (unless it gets delayed again) doesn’t solve the long term problem of business rates. It is a property tax that does not reflect how business is done in 2017 and needs to replaced. Of course, there is no easy alternative to a tax that brings in £28bn a year. The government needs to ease the pain felt by those facing big increases but also come up with a more equitable solution. It is

time to stop ignoring the problem. The Competition and Markets Authority continues to keep an eye on the interiors sector. After dishing out £2.8m in fines over bed components (see February issue) it has turned its attention to Poole Lighting, saying it thinks the owner of the Endon and Saxby brands has stopped retailers setting their own prices online. The CMA couldn’t say when it expects to reach a final conclusion but in the meantime it seems unfair to leave the allegation hanging over Poole’s reputation. It seems any UK flooring company hoping to join the Victoria fold has missed the boat, with the group turning its attention to continental Europe. Victoria’s product portfolio has significant gaps so we can expect smooth flooring to be next in line. A BFM survey has found that more than a third of furniture manufacturers’ staff are non-UK EU nationals, with the situation more pronounced at large upholstery companies where Britons are in the minority. Given the difficulty in attracting local staff and the time it takes to train them, the outcome of Brexit negotiations could be more important to the sector than first thought.

Price warning as profits hit at Dunelm
Seven for Swede: Upmarket Swedish bed manufacturer Hastens has opened studios in Cookes Furniture’s Birmingham and Christchurch, Dorset, stores and Midfurn’s Alcester, Warwickshire store. The Midfurn store will display the Luxuria and Auroria beds, alongside a small selection of accessories. Cookes will offer the Luxuria, Auroria and Proferia. Each studio has a dedicated member of staff. The additions increase Hastens’ UK stores to seven.
DFS enjoys strong growth DFS has experienced strong sales growth in the past six months and says it still plans to pay a special dividend to shareholders. Gross sales in the 26 weeks to 31 January increased by 7%. ‘Once again Dwell and Sofa Workshop have contributed encouragingly to overall group sales growth. As we anticipated at the time of our preliminary results announcement in October, we saw some impact on product margins in the first half from the impact of adverse foreign exchange movements. We continue our work to actively offset this impact through range management and supplier negotiations, while the differentiated DFS sourcing model of vertical
integration, UK manufacturing capability and superior scale remains an important competitive advantage,’ says DFS. The company says furniture retailing in the UK this year faces an increased risk of a market slowdown given the uncertain outlook for consumer confidence. ‘However, with our resilient operating model we believe the group remains very well positioned to respond to economic headwinds and cost pressures while achieving continued growth in its share of the UK retail furniture market. Consequently our expectations for the group’s profit before tax in the full year remain unchanged,’ says the company.

Homewares chain Dunelm has seen profits plunge by more than a quarter as it warned that prices will rise in the coming months. Pre-tax profits dropped by 26% to £55.9m in the six months to 31 December (including five weeks of owning Worldstores). Sales rose by 1% to £452.4m excluding Worldstores and by 2.8% to £460.5m including Worldstores. Like for like store sales decreased by 3.1% while home delivery grew by 20.1%. John Browett, Dunelm ceo, says trading has been ‘slightly softer’ than expected and that the opening of its second warehouse had affected product availability. Problems at the warehouse in Stoke, and moving its third party, one-man delivery network there cost £3m. ‘We see major opportunities in product design, innovation and sourcing. This work on product should enable us to grow by appealing to a broader set of customers across more categories, incorporating wider tastes of design and style. Our sourcing work should also improve our value for money proposition,’ he says. ‘Dunelm continues to develop its furniture offer across all channels. We are working hard to deliver new ranges, with better quality and greater choice.’ New formats are being trialled in-store using roomsets along with new ways to display products. Browett says it is also working on an improved service model and the new POS system will help staff to sell the entire range in-store. ‘The Worldstores acquisition gives us an opportunity to accelerate the development of our overall furniture offering,’ he says. ‘We have started to see some impact from adverse currency conditions, which affects both goods sourced directly and via our suppliers. While we have worked very hard to mitigate these cost price increases, we will see price pressures coming through in the months ahead,’ adds Browett.

Laura Ashley profit warning Laura Ashley issued a profit warning in the face of lower sales and increasing costs. The chain says that like for sales in the six weeks to 11 February are down by 0.6% following a 3.5% drop in the six months to 31 December. The six month period saw pre-tax profits drop from £11m to £7.8m. As a result it says it will not be able to meet market expectations for the full-year. It described the second half of 2016 as a ‘challenging period for the group as it dealt with a softening of the market and increasing cost pressures.’ These included the weakening of sterling and the rise in the national living wage. The company also faces the closure of 22 Homebase concessions by June. Home accessories made up 34% of its £133.4m UK sales, followed by furniture (30%), decorating (20%) and fashion (16%). ‘Home accessories sales for the 26 weeks increased by 0.3% with like for like performance up by 2.5%. Our seasonal ranges were the most successful element of the first half and these will be enhanced and grown over the coming seasons,’ reports the company. ‘Furniture sales decreased by 9.3% with like for like sales
down 8%. In spite of a soft performance in this category over the whole period, the performance of furniture improved during the second quarter. Our new season product range has recently been launched and the early reaction to this has been encouraging, so we are hopeful for a stronger second half for this category.’ Decorating sales fell by 7.7% with like for like sales decreasing by 6.4%.

Victoria moves into Europe

Kindred Living has appointed Kyle Hutchinson as area sales manager for the North of England. Simon Nicholson, ScS merchandise controller, has been promoted to furniture buyer director.

Furniture accounted for 30% of UK sales
Victoria has agreed its first continental European acquisition and confirmed its focus is on completing more. In January, when it announced Philippe Hammers as incoming ceo, Victoria signalled it would ‘execute advanced plans to expand into the growing €5bn European flooring market’. Now it has done so, buying Netherlands artificial grass manufacturers Avalon and GrassInc for up to £21.7m. It is paying £9.7m up front and £4.4m over four years, with a further £7.6m dependent on profitability. Last year Avalon and GrassInc
generated EBIT of £3.6m from sales of £17.6m. ‘This represents the first of several acquisitions we will be making in Europe and it elevates our status as being a supplier of innovative flooring products to our growing customer base. There is already significant demand from our existing UK customers for artificial grass, which is currently being met by our competitors and we are therefore confident there are material revenue synergies for Avalon and GrassInc from our UK operations,’ says Geoff Wilding, Victoria executive chairman.
Staffing threat to UK production Immigration curbs could see UK furniture manufacturers move production overseas, if they aren’t allowed to employ non-UK EU nationals post Brexit. A survey of 50 manufacturers by the BFM suggests that 34% of staff are non-UK EU nationals. Half the businesses surveyed predicted that if limits were placed on this source of labour, the industry’s skills shortages

would worsen, notably among upholsterers, sewers, frame assemblers and wood machinists. More than half (52%) said they relied on non-UK EU labour. Some suggested that any restrictions on accessing this workforce could result in moving more or part of production abroad. The sector that expressed most concern was upholstery.

Poole Lighting has been told by the Competition and Markets Authority that it believes the lighting supplier has broken competition law by restricting retailers’ freedom to discount online. The CMA has provisionally found that the company restricted retailers’ freedom to discount Poole Lighting’s Saxby and Endon brands online. It has issued a statement of objections to Poole Lighting. ‘It is alleged the company stopped retailers from setting their own prices online and forced them to sell at – or above – a minimum price. This would be a form of resale price maintenance, which breaks competition law,’ says the CMA. No final conclusion has been reached regarding whether there has been a breach of competition law. ‘With more and more retail activity moving online, making sure competition works well in this channel is a priority for the CMA. That happens when retailers are free to set their own prices to attract customers using the Internet to look for the best deal. So we take allegations of online resale price maintenance seriously because it can keep those prices high and limit choice for consumers. We will now carefully consider representations from the company before reaching a final decision,’ says Ann Pope, CMA senior director, antitrust.

Kitchen nightmare Installation must show reasonable skill and care It wasn’t a dark and stormy night. The wind wasn’t howling and the lights weren’t flickering. There was no dramatic soundtrack to build up the tension. It was just an ordinary afternoon. Mrs J was in her kitchen cooking a meal. Two pans were on the stove and she opened the wall cabinet to get the salt. Absolutely nothing to warn her of the horror that was unleashed in that unforgettable moment. The cabinet fell forwards, trapping Mrs J, and – as she found out soon enough – causing permanent injury. A cascade of glasses and vases shattered on to the worktop, stove and floor. The tea towel caught fire and flames leapt above the stove and quickly spread. She watched, terrified, unable to reach the call for help button just a few feet away. Only her mobile phone, and the neighbours she summoned, saved her and her flat. But not before her life had been changed forever. The housing association called in the kitchen installers. ‘Our fitting is guaranteed for a year
and this has been fitted for two and a half years. Not our problem. But we’ll put the cabinet back on the wall,’ it said. When I visited to try to find out what had caused the catastrophe the reason was easy to find because the adjacent cabinets had not been altered. They’d been propped up on the edge of the tiles and, because there were no fitting brackets, 100mm screws had been inserted through the hardboard back panels straight into the plasterboard and breezeblock walls. No plugs, no anchors, and a 20mm gap between the backpanel and the wall. The screws simply turned and had no holding power whatsoever. And the fallen cabinet had been ‘reinstalled’ simply by inserting two more screws directly into the wall at each top corner of the cabinet. Of course, such negligence does not always have devastating consequences, but it usually comes to light. Underlay joins that have not been taped that allow updraughts to permanently soil a carpet. Vinyl and laminate floors laid without consideration of moisture – and without

even taking a simple moisture reading – that bubble and distort. Lots of potential problems that could have been avoided just by using reasonable skill and care. That phrase – reasonable skill and care – is enshrined in UK consumer law. You can’t take away any of your customer’s statutory rights in your printed terms and conditions, and neither can you avoid liability for incompetence, negligence or even shortcuts if they result in problems for the customer. Even by suggesting the fitting is only covered by a ‘one year guarantee’. All the cabinets had to be taken down in Mrs J’s kitchen because the housing association realised they were as likely to fall down as the first one had done, and the consequences were unacceptable. If dramatic music warned us of any impending disaster, life would be easier. Instead, we have to ensure we’re getting things right every time. Waking up just before 7am is the ‘perfect time’
Early bird advantages A new study sheds light on the benefits of being a ‘morning person’ A recent study has tackled one of the best-known sleep fables: does the early bird really catch the worm? In an attempt to find out, Sealy UK cross-referenced the wake-up times of more than 5,000 people from across the UK, with lifestyle factors such as mood, weight, energy levels and education, to see if there is any link between getting up early and leading a happy, healthy life. Understanding sleep patterns and habits is an essential part of bed manufacturing, as well as an important role in the research and development process, and Sealy’s study underlines its ongoing commitment in this area. Although anecdotally getting up early is considered a good thing, there has been little specific research into the area. But the study revealed a clear correlation between the time a person wakes up and lifestyle factors such as body weight, and even education levels. For example, nearly a quarter (24%) of those who woke up before 7am are ‘always’ refreshed and well-rested in the

‘Nearly a quarter (24%) of those who woke up before 7am are “always” refreshed in the day ahead’ day ahead compared with just 8% who woke up after 9am, and 9% of those who woke up after 11am. Those who reported waking up before 7am were 39% more likely to be degree-educated than those waking up after 9am. Waking up early also appeared to have a link to body weight, with late risers – who get up after 9am – emerging as 90% more likely to be obese than those getting up between 6am and 6.59am. With all this compelling data into the apparent benefits of waking up early, Sealy decided to dig a little deeper and
explore whether there really was a ‘perfect’ time to wake up. Based on the chances of waking up feeling refreshed, well-rested and bursting with energy, 6.58.29am emerged as the ‘optimum’ time. The study also explored where in the country the ‘best’ morning people resided, and exactly what the secret to their routine was. The data reveals they are most likely to live in Brighton and be 31 years old, female, have GCSE level education, be 5ft 1in to 5ft 6in tall, weigh 10-11 stone, and have a full-time job. Following closely as the country’s second and third best morning people were those in Bristol and Southampton, respectively. While everyone’s requirements are different, there’s no doubt that maintaining regular, healthy sleep patterns brings numerous benefits. Achieving a good, undisturbed night’s sleep is key to feeling refreshed in the early mornings, while a supportive and comfortable bed also plays

an important role in the process. The Wake up with Sealy campaign used data gathered from the brand’s recent Worldwide Sleep Census, which was launched in conjunction with Loughborough University’s Clinical Sleep Research Unit at the end of 2016. Polling more than 15,000 people across the world in countries including China, South Korea, Australia, South Africa and the UK, the comprehensive study explored the sleep habits of the globe, tackling a wide variety of issues. Key findings already released from the census include the emergence of a worldwide sleep debt; the perceived amount of sleep people need to effectively function mentally and emotionally the next day during the normal working week, minus the actual sleep they get each night. While the sleep debt in the UK is by no means the worst globally, it is still significant, with men on average losing 28 minutes a night, and women faring worse, losing an average of 56 minutes each night. This equates to a five days a year in lost sleep for men, and 10 days a year for women. The Worldwide Sleep Census also explored our sleep quality. Stressful journey to the land of nod We are getting less sleep than we did four years ago, new research shows
Britons are increasingly turning to the bottle at bedtime – and less and less towards their partner. Alcohol in particular is increasingly being used as a ‘sleep remedy’, according to the results of The Sleep Council’s latest Great British Bedtime Report (first conducted in 2013). A quarter of those questioned for the 2017 report said they used alcohol to help them nod off: up from 16% in 2013. Also, the number of us who don’t share a bed with their partner has increased from 8% to 12%. As well as alcohol, more and more people are turning to medication, music and meditation in their quest to get a

We’re getting even less sleep. Almost three-quarters (74%) of us sleep less than seven hours per night while the number of people who said they get less than five hours is up from 7% to 12%. For many people (61%) between five to seven hours a night is the norm. Some 30% of men and 20% of women drink alcohol before bedtime. Of people aged 45-54, 30% cited alcohol as something they use to help them sleep,

But far fewer people (26% in 2017 v 41% in 2013) say the last thing they do at night is read – traditionally regarded as sleep inducing.

making them the biggest users by age group. The trend for sleeping alone continues to increase. More than one in 10 of those questioned (12% as opposed to 8% in 2013) said they did not share the same bed as their spouse or partner. Nearly a
quarter of couples (24% v 22%) now sleep apart at least some of the time. More people are buying bigger beds. The number of respondents who bought a king-sized bed has jumped from 20% in 2013 to 32% this year. However, sales of standard doubles still make up the bulk of sales (to 47% of those questioned) with most people (41%) paying between £200 and £599 for their bed. The number of people using technology in the bedroom has declined since 2013, although people checking their social media last thing at night showed a small rise from 8% to 9%. Checking emails has dropped from 14% to 6%; watching television just before going to sleep is down from 38% to 30%; and using laptops/tablets is down from 12% to 8%. Just 38% said they kept and used a smartphone in the bedroom.
Concerns ‘The report is worrying on a number of fronts, particularly the facts which show we’re getting even less sleep now, the rise in alcohol consumption as a way of getting to sleep, and the increase in couples who sleep apart. On a more positive note, we’re pleasantly surprised to find less people are using technology in the bedroom before going to sleep. TVs, laptops and games consoles all have a significant impact on our sleeping habits and using a gadget just before bed makes it harder to switch off mentally and wind down,’ says Lisa Artis, Sleep Council executive. ‚‚‚

The top three things that disturb sleep are: worry or stress (45%), partner disturbance (25%) and noise (20%). Furthermore, more than one in 10 (13%) blame an uncomfortable bed. Unsurprisingly, more than half of respondents (55%) feel ready to face

Counting sleep It seems the more you earn, the more you sleep – 71% of those with a household income between £80,000 and £100,000 sleep on average more than six hours per night, while 50% of those who earn under £10,000 sleep less than six. ‘We spend a third of our lives sleeping which is vital to our health and wellbeing, but almost half of Britons say stress is keeping them awake at night. Bedtime should be a place where you can switch off, forget about the business of the day and relax. We can all suffer from worry and anxieties from time to time, but if it’s creating unhealthy sleeping habits, people should take action and get the peaceful night’s sleep they deserve,’ says Artis. More than half of women (51%) are kept up at night due to worry and stress compared to 39% of men. Furthermore, 29% of women blame partner disturbance compared to 19% of men. Men (53%) are more likely than women (42%) to go to sleep after 11pm.

In Yorkshire and the Humber, 44% of people who live there don’t have any problems sleeping, compared to 22% living in the East Midlands who say they’ve suffered from lack of sleep for 10 years or more.

Residents in Northern Ireland drink the most alcohol to help them sleep at night (29%), while those in the South East drink the least before bed (22%). Almost a quarter of people in the North East have quite a poor night’s sleep each night (24%), with 30% of them getting just five or six hours. People in Scotland read the most before going to sleep (35%) compared to other regions in the UK. More than half of people in Wales (55%) say their energy levels have been affected by lack of sleep, with 22% of people sleeping quite poorly at night Only 17% of people from the West Midlands get the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep a night, and almost a quarter (24%) use music to help them drift off.

Solid foundations Hypnos has seen sales and profits surge Bed manufacturer Hypnos has enjoyed significant growth across the retail and hospitality markets, in both the UK and internationally. The British business, which operates under Hypnos and Hypnos Contract Beds, reported an overall turnover for the group of more than £62m for the year ending 25 June 2016: an increase of 32% on the previous year. Furthermore, the group has seen a 60% year on year improvement in its underlying operating profit. Owned by parent company Keen and Toms Holdings, the business attributes its strong performance to a continued focus on international outreach, as well as a series of new retailer account openings and refurbishment programmes by its hospitality clients. Additionally the hospitality business, Hypnos Contract Beds, has benefitted from its new facility in Castle Donington, which was officially opened last April by Prince Andrew. ‘These are a very pleasing set of numbers to report as they are well in excess of the targets that we set ourselves five years ago. We have achieved significant growth in the UK in both retail and hospitality sectors and have started to see real traction in our international activities in both sectors,’ says Stephen Ward, Hypnos group md. ‘Our new five-year plan, which started in July 2016, is set to deliver continued growth both domestically and

Forward thinking CS Schmal intends to boost its UK presence One of Germany’s largest producers of ready to assemble furniture, CS Schmal reaffirmed its commitment to the UK market at the recent imm Cologne and has appointed husband and wife team Matthew and Cate Kutas as UK and Republic of Ireland agents. ‘CS Schmal is looking to expand its export business and sees the UK as potentially one of the most important European markets,’ says Frank Renders, CS Schmal export sales director. Matthew says: ‘We have joined CS at an exciting time in the development of what is a very forward thinking company.’ CS invests in marketing materials to make it easy for the customer to access everything such as imagery and brand logos to support marketing in catalogues or online. Attention is paid to details such as packaging along with the different logistic solutions used by retailers, he says. ‘Packaging is certainly an important point, as CS is a specialist in smaller items of furniture such as shoe cabinets and bookcases, as well as wider ranges of living room systems,’ says Cate. ‘This makes us an interesting supplier to deal with. Top performers The better end is proving most successful for Sweet Dreams ‘Mid to high end British mainstream products, whether in beds or upholstery, are in our experience enjoying a resurgence,’ says Jackie McGarvey, Sweet Dreams general manager. The Lancashire manufacturer exhibited at the January Furniture Show and was pleased both with sales and the number of new accounts opened. But, attention and sales were for a greater part the preserve of products in its luxury and top end collections. In beds, the refreshed Pocket Air collection in particular has garnered acclaim and attracted strong sales. Clarence 4000, featuring cashmere both to the mattress cover and the microquilting below, and Kenilworth 3000, featuring memory foam and a supersoft knit viscose cover, did well at the show. For both divans the damask mattress border comes in two colours, wheat and nickel, to match the divan base, and this has proved popular. The choice of base colourway applies across the collection. Stand-out successes at the show were Royal Pillowtop and Noble 1000, another divan containing memory foam and featuring the new box pillowtop style, and popular favourite Luxury Aloe Memory 2000 from the Pocket Spring collection. All Pocket Air and Royal Pillowtop beds come in three sizes, 135cm, 150cm and
180cm, and a choice of storage options to the base, including three styles of ottoman. Mattress and base alike are enhanced with quality finishing. For its British upholstery range, Knightsbridge, Glenmore and Carmen were the most successful models at the NEC. Retailers welcomed the new fabric selection and Carmen in check turned a lot of heads. It leads a retro capsule collection comprising three other models, Etro, Vantage and Penny Lane. By contrast, Knightsbridge and
Glenmore epitomise more traditional styling. A slight adjustment to the seat specification has increased the already high levels of comfort and won the range new friends. The use of Duratech carded fibre characterises Knightsbridge and Carmen while high density Reflex foam is used in Glenmore; further evidence that it’s the top end models with the highest specifications that are proving most successful for the manufacturer. On the up Exports of furniture are rising British furniture is increasingly being snapped up overseas. Exports to the EU rose by 19.8% and to non-EU countries by 8.4% in 2016 compared to 2015. According to the latest BFM Overseas Trade Report, the total value of exports surpassed £2bn. While most sectors saw better export values, upholstery stood out. Upholstered seat exports in 2016 rose on the year by 82% to the EU and overall by 54.4% to stand at £85m. ‘British furniture has a worldwide reputation for exceptional standards and craftsmanship,’ says Jackie Bazeley, BFM md. ‘Thanks to the positive reputation of British-based companies many are doing well overseas. Our long history of producing some of the best furniture in the world is recognised around the globe.’ The BFM report found exports to nonEU countries now account for more trade than to EU countries. Chief among them is the USA which remains the largest market for UK furniture worth £533m, 19% up on 2015. ‘The report highlights the importance of the USA market for the furniture industry, which may prove interesting following recent developments in the political world,’ adds Bazeley. China is now the UK’s second largest non-EU export market, having overtaken

Last year saw Lano relocate from its long-standing headquarters to a facility with a more open layout, fostering a collaborative approach that is already proving beneficial. ‘There is no doubt that moving to a more communicative space has had a hugely positive impact on Lano and it has gone some way in helping us to be super clear in our strategy for the UK. The warm dark brown is a reaction to Scandinavian design where white and light pastel shades play a central role. The dark colour brings a touch of class, creating a cosy, intimate mood in the home. The distinctive, classic oak design is characterised by its flower-like graining, fissures and knots. Particularly when combined with other dark shades, including black, the floor adds a touch of luxury to the interior. The Massimo collection of engineered wood floors features Quick-Step’s longest and widest floorboards yet at 240cm x 26cm. The boards are characterised by large knots and subtle cracks, while the extra matt oil or extra matt lacquer finish enhance the natural, untreated look in line with today’s aesthetic of authenticity and simplicity. The collection comes in four designs. The Dark Chocolate and Winter Storm designs are finished with extra matt oil to provide an extremely natural look. Thanks to the oil treatment, the boards are easy to repair if damaged. The wood stain reacts with the tannin in the wood and doesn’t accentuate or enrich the graining. Combined with deep brushing,
this results in a softer, more vintage look and a natural iridescence in and between the planks, since the softer and harder parts of the wood contain different amounts of tannins and react differently. Cappuccino Blonde and Frozen feature an extra matt lacquer for improved performance and stain resistance. Both are characterised by a deep, rounded brushing. Cappuccino Blonde is treated with wood stain and resembles freshly sawn timber. Scandinavian-inspired Frozen appears to have been treated with white oil, but it’s really lacquer. These floorboards are reminiscent of cerused oak floors from the Middle Ages. ‘It’s no secret that we’ve always been obsessed with wood: its elegance and appearance, the warmth it exudes, its feeling to the touch, and the typical scent,’ says Nollet. ‘With our vinyl and laminate collections, we went out of our way to perfect the natural look. Smart production To introduce Majestic, Quick-Step parent Unilin invested €10m upgrading its production plant at Wielsbeke. With new manufacturing technologies, the laminate production process increasingly focuses on automation and data exchange. ‘We are steadily building a “smart factory”,’ says Ruben Desmet, Unilin general manager laminate. ‘Here, different production stations no longer work as islands, but communicate with each other and with human operators in real time. For an industry leader like Unilin, this approach offers many advantages in terms of quality, flexibility, and preventive maintenance. Thanks to new technology, we now have more control over the production process. This allows us to create a product that is 100% stable.’ Quality control is done mainly by in-line cameras that record every passing floorboard, identifying a range of errors. But, a human touch is paramount. In the milling line, for example, a sample is taken every 10 minutes and inspected by the operator. The switch to ‘factory of the future’ is about more than guaranteeing quality. Clients demand increasingly flexible services: shorter delivery times and more varied orders.
‘In a traditional production environment, changing the line to another decor or collection was cumbersome and time-consuming. To shorten the turnaround time, we needed to decrease human interaction and replace routine jobs by computer-guided processes,’ he explains. An increased focus on digitisation doesn’t rule out the need for human operators in the production process. ‘Quite the opposite, in fact. Our operators were involved very early on in the upgrade process. That way, the production environment meets their ergonomic needs. This increases their wellbeing at work, enhancing productivity and efficiency along the way,’ adds Desmet.

Widespread development Balta is not standing still when it comes to innovative enhancements Balta is not holding back on product development. The heather versions of its Sarabi and Sarafina Leonis ranges, Simba and Kesari, will be available in April while the brand is set to receive a significant boost. Timeless, introduced at the end of February, will be the final Balta soft polypropylene range branded as Sensit: from now on they will be branded as Leonis. Its soft nylon ranges will continue to be under the Satino branding. Chateau is a 100% soft polypropylene range of stripes and geometric shapes in four colours and 4m and 5m widths; a soft version of Noble will be introduced in May or June and the Big Hit collection is to have a sister range of loop piles: Big Top with a 5m width. This comes on top of the updating of Gala & Stripes and Moorland. Gala & Stripes has eight more colours with trending greys and silvers
teamed with vibrant blues and reds. ‘We are delighted to reveal a new, versatile colour bank held in Gala & Stripes, bringing this established broadloom collection into 2017 in stylish fashion. We expect the bright and bold stripes, and also coordinating plains, to receive a positive reaction, with a fabulous mix of practical qualities extending the collection’s residential appeal,’ says Geert Vanden Bossche, Balta marketing director. Gala & Stripes designs are available with Blue Felt or Actionbac backing, and in a 4m width. Plain designs can also be purchased in a 5m width. The new look Moorland Twist range comprises three forms. Four tones have been added to the eight original plains, along with two coordinating stripes and, for the first time, two zig-zag designs. ‘Over the past few years, Balta’s bestselling collections have been those that offer plains with coordinating
stripes. The trend continues, but so does a homeowner’s desire for something new and interesting,’ says Vanden Bossche. ‘The updated colour palette reflects today’s trends, with a generous mix of natural and grey tones. ntgrate is expanding its high performance woven vinyl flooring ‘At ntgrate, design goes hand in hand with a high-tech production process. State of the art weaving machinery and the best jacquard machines produce high quality floor tiles and planks. Our woven vinyl flooring meets the strong aesthetic and technical aspects of commercial flooring,’ says Pascal Vantomme, ntgrate md. Founded in January 2016, its parent company has a long history of window screens and this has allowed ntgrate to be vertically integrated, producing and weaving its own yarns. ‘Our weaving machinery makes it possible to steer every warp thread separately. This allows the designers to create new structures and patterns,’ he explains. ‘Woven vinyl is the space between carpet and hard flooring, with the advantage of the technical specification and with design that can be flexible.’ The company offers 34 designs and will add to this in June and October. As well as the glue down version, ntgrate offers a click system version. Later in the year it will introduce woven vinyl wallcoverings. ‘Woven vinyl is growing in popularity because of the design possibilities and specifiers and architects can combine it with other flooring products, for example to create a break-out area,’ Vantomme says. ‘Our design DNA will be in organic designs such as Noble and Brave and woven vinyl is easy to maintain: just vacuum it daily and, depending on the traffic, wash it every two or three months,’ he adds. Keeping quiet Print Acoustics’ products help reduce noise Noise affects the mood of people and can lead to reduced performance in the home, at work and leisure. ‘As home and offices have lost sound absorbing qualities such as wallpaper and carpets, instead using painted walls and laminate floors, so more sound absorbing products are needed,’ says Johan Debaere, Triplaco marketing manager. Triplaco, part of the Lefevere Group, launched Print Acoustics in 2015 to build on its expertise in sound. ‘Since then we have seen increasing demand for products as we have lower minimum orders and lower prices compared with traditional German or Swiss suppliers,’ he says. laminate in stock for quick delivery. ‘The combination of today’s architecture and interior design – with minimalist design and the use of hard materials – with the integration of open spaces is a nightmare for those looking to get pleasant acoustic comfort,’ says Kristoff Ver Eecke, Print Acoustics divisional manager. ‘Our collection of acoustic absorbing panels is developed to absorb and reduce all kinds of disturbing noises in an area, even in rooms with large audiences and a lot of ambient noise, such as auditoriums and offices but also in hospitals, retirement homes, schools, hotels and sports venues,’ he says. Debaere says interior designers and architects are taking more notice of the
impact of noise, particularly as it costs more to retro-fit the panels than if installed during construction. The panels consist of a core in black moisture repellent MDF and a nonwoven glass fibre tissue on the back or in the middle. The top layer can be Abet Laminati Print HPL, lacquer or veneer that can also be digitally printed on. It has also developed a solution using woven vinyl from ntgrate as a top layer. ‘Our collection includes products for walls, doors and furniture. All products are developed and manufactured in-house and are thoroughly tested in a reverberation room of an independent laboratory, before entering the market,’ adds Debaere. The remote controlled 5ft Elan can be operated by smartphone or tablet. Annaghmore’s Leon is a dining and bedroom collection in a distressed French oak finish while Farnham Fusion combines leather and soft cover. New mattress company Ava, the first company to win the FIRA Ergonomics Excellence Award for its mattresses, launched the 13in deep pressurerelieving Colossal X mattress alongside the Rossa, Lois and Pride mattresses. Camel Group showcased its Storm bedroom range comprising tall boy, wardrobe, bed, dresser and mirror. A contemporary collection made from syncro wood, it features panels with contrasting horizontal and vertical wood grains. The bed features a soft padded headboard in a choice of fabrics, and has two options – curved or straight. Core Products introduced the Highland Home Furniture brand with seven ranges of assembled cabinet for bricks and mortar stores only. Hamilton was relaunched as oak veneer rather than ash. Forte Furniture highlighted a number of new ranges including its dark wood Bellevue bedroom collection in black oak and mud oak. The bed features a faux leather headboard and built-in LED lighting. Geneva was a new lounge, dining and bedroom range with a whitewashed decor carcass and medium oak tops. The 2m wide TV cabinet Square, available in black or white gloss, features concealed doors with interior shelving. Gallery Direct unveiled more than 380 products. Among them were the Mustique dining collection in Mindi wood; Aurelia bedroom; York upholstered bed; more than 25 lights; metal frame occasional tables with tile tops; an expanded Wickham; a third finish silver leaf was added to Chic alongside a 6ft bed option; Kielder was updated with a dining table and bar stools; and the 5ft Safari bed now has a low footend. GFA debuted Alpha, a swivel recliner chair and footstool that comes fully assembled. Made with a high resilient foam, Alpha is a modern design in three colours – white, conker brown and salt

and pepper – and features an adjustable neck rest. The Marseille, Saint Tropez, Biarritz and Nice recliners were debuted. There were occasional and bedroom chair additions including small tub chair Weatherby with wooden legs in beige or grey, and Jazz, a velvet studded-back chair in cranberry, royal and bone. A new colourway Confetti was added to its existing Balmoral occasional chair. Greenapple’s Raw is made from solid cracked oak and comprises sideboard, dining table, bench, TV unit and table
with storage. Rimini was reintroduced as a high gloss dining collection with a glass top. Orbit has a stainless steel base with high gloss top and a glass layer. Camden includes nine items including an extending dining table in chunky solid wood. The Phantom table collection combines acacia tops with powder coated steel legs. 8mm glass layer. Mosaic sports a smoked glass top on iron legs, while Manhattan combines grey veneer, powder coated metal legs with angled edges. IFD showed off its first reclaimed pine range, Melbourne, with a rustic finish across bedroom and dining. Kelston House expanded Annabelle from the bedroom to dining. The reclaimed pine range includes a large circular table. La-Z-Boy displayed the Originals collection exclusively for independents. It reintroduced the brand’s unique handle recline mechanism, as well as power recline and static options on all models. The range features the updated specification, which includes 100% leather on all leather models as well as new colourways. The La-Z-Boy in-store studio includes branded pillars and lightboxes, hanging fabric and leather samples, video screen displays and carpet. Lebus showcased an eclectic mix of products and new offerings. Ashley has a high button-back, curving teardrop style arms, accent cushions and wooden legs. Brittany was indicative of a marked increase in sofa size, and has large deep cushions. Contemporary Mario has stud detailing on the arms and printed velvet accent cushions. Emily is a fluted-back

sofa, while Aleisha has wide oversized cushions. Retro offerings included Fairfield with its high back and Jo with cushioned arms and wooden legs. Mark Webster Designs’ Gatsby combines acacia and metal inlay with 1930s style influences. Parq is a range of contemporary reclaimed dining and bedroom with matching upholstery. Loft upholstery offers six designs using the same frame: customers can choose the model, arms, fabrics and cushions for the same price. Murong Furniture showed its Nordic bedroom, living and dining range of solid oak furniture. Nolte launched Concept Me, a complete bedroom system with a huge range of options. The consumer decides the way they want their bedroom to look: wardrobes, beds, bedside chests and chests of drawers can be adapted to this notion. Nolte has also brought its full range of colours into the Express range of flatpack bedroom furniture. One Call Furniture debuted the Minnesota bedroom range in grey oak with a rustic finish while the drawer top of Avenue has a J-shaped profile. Protect-a-Bed debuted Rem-Fit, which provides in-depth information via an app on how well you slept. Shankar added Majesty and Chester
crushed velvet chairs, available in black and silver. Majesty is a winged buttonback armchair with studs that follow the back and arms. The Chester dining or accent chair with brass coloured studding detail, features a chrome knocker on the back of the chair. New bar stools included Havana and Novita. Havana, with a curved seat and backrest, features the chair back and seat frame in walnut on the outside and upholstered in leather on the inside, in a cream and walnut combination. Novita features a curved walnut chair back which wraps around the seat providing supporting armrests. Walnut chair legs are linked with a chrome ring and the chair seat and back are upholstered in cream coloured leather. Staingard introduced the Mattressgard mattress protectors alongside a range of mattresses that are Staingard pretreated. Stressless launched LegComfort, an integrated footrest that comes out from the seat and extends further than most footrests to suit all leg lengths. The front of the footrest is angled for maximum relaxation; allowing the natural angle of the ankles in all positions, and the design assures full freedom of movement when getting up from the chair. Stressless Classic chairs in sizes medium and large and on the new Stressless sofa designs: Breeze and Lux. Stroolmount introduced a POS wall stand. Time Living debuted beds including Brooklyn, a contemporary design with a quilted fabric headboard shown in navy and also available in grey, with metallic legs. The Alexander bedframe shown in rose gold also comes in chrome and black nickel. Hamilton features a high buttoned headboard in soft-touch fabric and comes in two grey shades. Vogue Beds revamped Hampton with new fabrics and six models while Limelight’s Himalaya bed frame has a large faux leather headboard and Larrisa is a buttoned fabric bedstead. The Wood Bros’ upholstery collection was developed to include a variety of new accent chairs, sofas and footstools. New were the Pickering sofa featuring pleating and buttoning and Deighton, a laid back lounge chair with turned legs and arms. There were also new sizes for Malham (medium sofa), Ripley (medium sofa), and Weybourne medium sofa with a new simpler plinth. Luxury fabric specialist Kobe UK celebrated a successful second year at the event. The perfect stage for Kobe’s newest collections, it gave the company the opportunity to meet with existing customers as well as increase its new customer base. A winner at the show was Kobe’s Boutique, a lavish mix of innovative curtain and upholstery fabrics featuring velvet, woven jacquard, cool cotton and soft satin appearance, suitable for both domestic and contract use. Also unveiled was Kobe’s Bufera collection, designed with today’s upholstery in mind. The 100% natural fabric collection is suitable for both domestic and contract upholstery use. Bufera can be supplied with an Ace treatment that passes domestic and contract upholstery, curtain and bedspread standards. The treatment also offers soil and stain qualities – making this a multipurpose treatment. ‘This was a fantastic show for us. Fresh thinking Charltons Furniture returned to the show The exhibition was a success for Charltons Furniture, which had a great deal resting on the show. It was its first major public outing since the MBO at the start of 2016 and also heralded its return to the NEC after a one year gap. ‘We have invested a lot into the January Furniture Show,’ says Steve Upperton, Charltons head of sales. ‘For the previous year we had been planning ahead. Furniture taste and style never stays the same. We were therefore determined to come to the JFS with new ideas and fresh thinking. Our hard work and vision has really paid off. Our customers liked what we were up to, with many new customers and orders being signed up.’ Charltons sees itself at the forefront of painted furniture: its new Somerdale collection comes in a whole array of colour and finish options. Additionally, its bestselling Bretagne range has been relaunched with four colour options available, Lacquered, Classic, Kaleidoscope and Unlimited. ‘It is now all about choice,’ adds Upperton. ‘The buying public are now demanding great quality furniture that comes with a real choice of colour and finish options that will exactly match their home. With our new Somerdale and Bretagne, we are now able to offer this.

Something for everyone Collins and Hayes’ launches had that must have factor ‘Everyone at Collins and Hayes has worked hard to develop new models and refine existing lines to show at the NEC. ‘We were widely regarded as having one of the best collections in the show, with the most attractive and energetic stand. We were very proud to launch three uniquely different designs at the show managing to capture that all important commercial product everyone must have,’ says Matt O’Flynn, Collins and Hayes md. Gracie, Duggie and Banks have taken considerable time and effort from the inhouse design team to create and offer seating solutions for a contemporary and demanding consumer, reckons O’Flynn. ‘The new models, shown in some great fabric combinations, will be available in selected stockists from Easter.’ New POS plaques, branded fabric stands and a further collection of natural fibre fabrics from Italian luxury chenilles to exclusive Chanel-inspired boucle are offered. ‘New models and fabrics all performed well. Show attendance was encouraging,

and the presence of quality key retailers was high,’ he says. The company’s new website now features a find a stockist function that indicates which particular models are displayed in each store. ‘This will help direct the customer to their chosen model in the appropriate store, and most importantly they will get to see and try the model for themselves,’ he says. Alpha Designs continued to build on its successful product range with the introduction of three models: Arabella, Digby and Molly. ‘The January Furniture Show, as always, provided a fantastic platform for showcasing new designs and fabrics and was yet another resounding success for the business. The team was determined to create an inviting ambience to welcome both new and existing customers to experience an array of our bestselling models along with new designs,’ says Barry Webb, Alpha Designs sales director. Natural partners Indus Valley combined solid wood and metals Indus Valley presented an eclectic mix of solid wood and metals across eight dining and bedroom ranges. The Prado collection is a combination of washed solid acacia wooden tops in a polished stainless steel frame. Kenzo combines thick iron legs and frame with sandblasted wooden tops. Showing again this year was the Railway Sleeper collection made from reclaimed sleeper wood, which differs in look and texture within the same table top. It has a 10mm toughened glass top and sits on polished stainless steel legs and has coordinating crushed velvet chairs. Matrix is a solid acacia wood dining range with natural cracks and splits giving a rustic feel, contrasting with polished stainless steel legs. Indus Valley also showed a range of upholstered cantilever chairs in steel and iron frames, one inspired from a car seat and others in a fan-back design. Cartouche has seven more colourways, while Protégé and Virtuoso – in 10 shades – were added to the Stain-less collection. Distinctive Flooring unveiled the Vintage Parke range of LVT in six colours. Edel Telenzo introduced Hoxton and Primrose Hill made with 100% New Zealand wool in six colourways. The range will be ready to launch into

Furlong Flooring’s supersoft touch Prestige Solitaire polypropylene carpet features a new construction (two-ply squared) giving an extra density and resilience and comes with a combibacking for easy fitting. Solitaire is available in 12 plain pastel colours, is bleach cleanable and has a 20-year wear and stain warranty. Furlong is looking to launch a further two ranges in the spring. The manufacturer also previewed its new vinyl collection concept Design Elements for a spring launch, featuring a ‘prayer book’ for
samples rather than a typical lectern style. Interfloor offered a new foot tester and contemporary POS materials to help retailers present its Tredaire underlay range. Rama Carpets introduced a number of ranges including the Divine collection of six rugs of abstract landscapes in neutrals, blues and greys, and Heath, a hand-knotted rug collection with a Moroccan influence, available in three colours. The Vintage and Modern Rug Co showed the Rustic Kelim range in six

colours and four sizes, and the Magic Kelims which are reversible, coming in two designs and three sizes. Also new was Gabeh Silk, a modern twist on a tribal style, with a silk touch. Think Rugs’ Zig Zag was shortlisted for this year’s Furniture Show Awards, a new addition by Fiona Howard focusing on navy and pastel trends. Outside In, Descend, Time to Reflect and Stand Tall were new designs by British designer Michelle Collins. There were six new designs for the Inaluxe range, images taken from paintings from Australian based artists and transferred to rugs.
Designs include: Jazz Flute, Colour Fall, Shipping News, Crystal Palace, Composition and Night Sky, many with geometric patterns and linear designs. The company also expanded its Noble House range with a further four designs and additional colourways. Victoria Carpets’ 100% nylon Lasting Luxury comes in 65oz and 95oz weights, 12 colours and has a 15-year stain and wear warranty. Rustic Jewels is a wool mix in two designs, Herringbone and Harmony, and eight colours. Broadening its portfolio with a departure from its usual wool ranges,

Westex showcased the Silken Velvet collection, a synthetic offering of a two-ply silk-feel fibre. It also added nine colours including greys and taupes to Westend Velvet. Woodpecker Flooring updated its POS material, with lighter units to show larger sample boards, showing off its Salcombe range. Subsequent new ranges and colours will be brought in for its September catalogue.

New Jersey Print won the Decor Furniture Award
Feather in the cap Flair Rugs’ scooped a Furniture Award The NEC played host to a successful show for Flair Rugs, with the Derbyshire company winning a Furniture Award. Taking first place in the Decor category was the New Jersey Print collection. It was the collection’s vivid Birds designs that took the headlines, with the judging panel deeming them ‘well priced, on-trend and promising mainstream appeal’. The panel described New Jersey Print as ‘offering fashion at an affordable price’, and appealing to many

with its ‘highly sellable’ nature. ‘It’s been a fantastic January Furniture Show for Flair Rugs, and once again the exhibition has proved the perfect place to commence our 2017 activities. This has obviously been capped by the award for New Jersey Print, especially when you consider the strong competition we were up against in the Decor category. Our in-house design team deserve all the credit coming its way, and this award demonstrates the part it plays in keeping
us at the tip of the trend curve,’ says Gareth Davies, Flair Rugs sales and marketing director. Alongside New Jersey Print was a series of additions and updates. New collections include the silky shaggy polyester of Sparkle, and the trending grey flatweaves in the hardwearing polypropylene Verona.
