EDITOR’S COMMENT

Andrew Kidd EDITOR

Decision time Retailers could teach politicians about powers of persuasion, without resorting to proclaiming the end is nigh Now that we’re in the final month of the EU referendum campaign, it would seem that the much feared knock to consumer confidence has failed to happen. Figures from Topps Tiles, Carpetright, Next and John Lewis (which is on a fantastic run at the moment) all indicate that consumers have carried on spending. Meanwhile, politicians on both sides of the European divide warn that we will be in big trouble if the vote doesn’t go the way they want it to. What’s longer than a Manchester United manager recruitment process or a BHS takeover? Trying to get a positive statement about EU membership or non-membership from either side. Imagine if you tried to run your company the same way: you’d be out of business in no

time. ‘If you buy that one, which might look very nice, you’ll be constantly cleaning it’; ‘That one’s very robust and will last a long time but it’s dreadfully uncomfortable’; ‘Your dog will love it but no-one else’; or ‘It’s very expensive and isn’t really worth it, but if you insist on paying that much…’ are not sales pitches that would bring success to any store. Shoppers want to hear about a product’s features and benefits, and it’s the same for voters. Unfortunately we’ve (yet) to hear any of that, which is disappointing given the magnitude of the decision. After 13 years of steering through the often choppy waters of the upholstery sector (especially the break-up of Christie-Tyler in 2005) this month also sees the retirement of Scott Malvenan, 61, Sofa Brands International group chief executive. He told me it will be the sort of retirement we all promise ourselves, so we wish him a long and happy change of focus. On the topic of voting, many thanks to those of you who have already voted in the Interiors Monthly Awards 2016. If you haven’t you have until 1 July to express your opinion. Email me, use the form on p6, or download it from www.ow.ly/fOi0300BVVD. Happy voting.

Weather helps furniture sales hot up at John Lewis John Lewis’ strong run of furniture sales has shown no signs of ending. Furniture sales rose by 8.7% in the week to 21 May, ‘thanks to especially strong sales in beds and bedroom,’ according to Christine Kasoulis, John Lewis home buying director. ‘The improving weather drove outdoor living product sales which were up 11.9%,’ she says. The previous week ‘home sales were up 2.9%, with warmer weather meaning that outdoor living products continue to drive sales. The weather story continues to unfold elsewhere across the home directorate, with low tog duvets another star performer,’ according to Simon Russell, John Lewis retail operations development director. In the week to 7 May furniture sales rose by 13.7% as outdoor living sales more than doubled. In the week to 30 April, furniture sales were up 21.7% and by 15.8% the week before. The previous week home sales were up 6.4%, ‘with strong demand for furniture, which was up 8.1%. Big ticket sales were strong with upholstery and textiles leading the way,’ says the chain.

Upholstery and textiles are strong sellers

After Easter ‘home had a very positive week with sales up 21.7% year on year, with sales in textiles and furniture categories particularly strong,’ in the week to 9 April. In the week to 2 April ‘big ticket items performed well such as beds up 26.7% and dining furniture up 3.7%. Over the two-week Easter period, home was very strong at +8.1%, with furniture and seasonal gifting particular highlights,’ according to Paula Nickolds, John Lewis commercial director.

Next profit warning

Hypnos celebrates its win

AIS accolades for duo Hypnos and Baker Furniture have been named as AIS Bed and Bedroom Cabinet Suppliers of the Year, respectively. In a break from the traditional September awards, AIS brought forward its awards to coincide with its April bed show. Hypnos won the bed award for the second consecutive year, with Sealy second and Relyon third. Unique Furniture was runner-up in the bedroom cabinet award and Kingstown third. Gold Standard Awards were awarded to: Hypnos, Relyon, Sealy, Silentnight, Tempur, Vispring, Baker Furniture, Kingstown Furniture and Unique Furniture.

Interiors Monthly June 2016

Next has shown strong home and furniture sales as it warned profits could vary by more than £100m. Sales from 31 January to 2 May were down by 0.2%, with full price sales down 0.9%: it had forecast sales of between -1% to +4%. Colder weather hit clothing sales in March and April, particularly over Easter, but full price home and furniture sales were 7% higher during the period.

Because of the six weeks to 4 May, which Next said might be a ‘potentially wider slow-down in consumer spending’, it has lowered its full price sales forecast for the rest of the year to -3.5% to +3.5%. The lowest rate would mean sales carrying on as they had for the six weeks. As a result Next says pre-tax profits will be between £748m (-8.9%) and £852m (+3.7%).

Flooring store ram-raided A South Wales flooring store was ram-raided in the early hours of 18 May. A yellow car drove into Rob Santwris Carpets in Lower Dock Street, Newport. A laptop worth £200 was stolen and the store’s

frontage was damaged. Santwris says: ‘The door was only put in in January. You feel for people who come home and it’s their own personal stuff gone. I just feel angry. At the end of the day it’s my shop.’

Aura to close one store

Trial stores have outperformed others

Like for like sales grow at Carpetright Carpetright has seen like for like sales edge up in the past quarter, while cutting back on promotions has helped gross margins. UK like for like sales rose by 0.7% in the 12 weeks to 23 April. In 2015 the increase was 10.5%. Like for like sales for the 25 week period were up 2%. Total UK sales were down 2.9% in the 12 weeks, by 1.6% in the 25 week period and up 0.3% in the 51 week period. In the past year 35 stores have closed and nine opened, giving it 434 stores. The group had warned that gross margin would fall by between 100 and 150 basis points, but thanks to cutting back on promotions it now says the fall will be between 80 and 100 basis points. It says it still expects to make underlying pre-tax profits of £17.3m. ‘The UK business continued to make progress in the final quarter, against strong comparatives in the prior year and in a market which was increasingly competitive. Against this background, we have delivered two-year compound like for like sales growth in excess of 10%,’ says Wilf Walsh, Carpetright chief executive. ‘Our plan to revitalise the Carpetright brand remains on track. Results from the trial of our new retail concept have been encouraging with the trial stores outperforming comparable stores in the estate. We have now completed our analysis of the customer data from the trial, enabling us to finalise the features of a new store format and brand identity which we will shortly begin to roll out across our UK business in a phased refurbishment programme. In tandem, we continue to make progress with our efforts to reduce store occupancy costs, with a number of further property deals in the pipeline.’ The chain is due to give details of its strategic plan at the end of June.

Nottingham furniture retailer Aura is to close one of its two stores in the city. Max Nouri, Aura owner, says he no longer needs the 7,500sqft Mansfield Road store and will focus on its nearby Huntingdon Street branch. Estate agent Savills will auction the property on 7 July with a guide price of £500,000-£550,000. Nouri bought the former car showroom 15 years ago and invested £250,000 in upgrading it.

‘We don’t need the Mansfield Road premises any more because it’s not very practical for us and I’m finding it difficult to manage them both. I have a large showroom in Huntingdon Street, which is quite large and has another showroom at the other side of the car park,’ he says. The company’s 10 staff will now all work at the Huntingdon Street store. Aura parent Pinewood Studio Group had 11 branches at its peak.

Shooting stars: Celebrating its third year, the Northern Big Shots clay pigeon shooting event raised more than £17,000 in aid of the furnishing industry’s charity, the Furniture Makers’ Company. Among the record 19 teams taking part in the 21 April event at Coniston Country Estate, Skipton, were: B&Q, Bensons for Beds, Breasley, DFS, Furniture Village, Howdens, Kaymed, Peroda, Panaz, Sleepeezee, Silentnight Group, Snuggledown, Steinhoff and Sweet Dreams. This year the Top Team prize went to new participants Howdens (pictured). Former DFS finance director Jon Massey scooped the Top Male Gun prize, while Top Female Gun this year went to Snuggledown’s Emma Holbern.

Ikea clicks in Birmingham Ikea’s third small format store will have a city centre location: Dale End, Birmingham, and is due to open in the summer. The format is designed to offer a click and collect facility while acting as a planning studio to plan and order more complex purchases such as kitchens, wardrobes and sofas. A small selection of products will be available from stock. Its second small store opened on 12 May on the Wellington Circle industrial estate south of Aberdeen. ‘Customers in the region shop with us online but they have to travel considerable distances to our Edinburgh or Glasgow stores to see the range or get advice from our co-workers. The order and collection point is a fantastic opportunity to connect all the ways you can shop with us in one place, right here in Aberdeen. We have had a lot of positive feedback for bringing Ikea to the area,’ says Iain Crone, Aberdeen store manager. The first small format store opened in Norwich last year.

Royal tribute for Ulster Carpets Prince Charles praised Ulster Carpets on a tour of its Portadown factory, where it is manufacturing a carpet for Buckingham Palace. During a series of engagements across Northern Ireland with the Duchess of Cornwall last month, the prince, who is patron of the Campaign for Wool, spoke to staff at the factory. ‘Both of us so admire the fact that this company is managing to be one of the few carpet manufacturers, chiefly because of your genius of keeping ahead of the competition and always investing in new equipment and ideas,’ he said.

‘Talking to quite a lot of you I see that a lot of you come from the same families and a lot of you have been here for 30, 40, 50 years: without even a grey hair and without going deaf as a result of the manufacturing process. ‘I can only congratulate you on what you have managed to achieve and I’m very glad to discover the carpet destined for Buckingham Palace looks as though it’s going to arrive on time. ‘I do hope the company goes from strength to strength. It is a wonderful tribute to the skills and dedication of so many of you here in this part of Northern Ireland.’

ScS management reshuffle ScS has unveiled a management shake-up as it looks to add to its team. Kevin Royal, formerly the group’s sales director, has become md, responsible for the stores and House of Fraser concessions. Royal joined ScS in 1981 as a trainee store manager. Marie Liston, formerly human resources director, has been appointed to the new role of corporate services director. Liston, who has been with the group for 15 years, will continue to oversee its

HR operations and will also have responsibility for customer service, internal audit, health and safety and regulatory compliance, as well as central administration and the group’s property functions. The company is now looking to appoint a sales director; a brand development director responsible for the House of Fraser concessions; and a commercial director responsible for flooring and partnership deals with household insurance companies.

Staying close Visitors to September’s China International Furniture Fair in Shanghai will be able to stay at the exhibition centre’s new hotel. The InterContinental hotel is due to open at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in time for the 7-10 September exhibition. The hotel is the only luxury hotel located in the heart of the NECC, 8km from Hongqiao International Airport and adjacent to the Hongqiao Transportation Hub and close to the city’s metro. The CIFF-Modern Home Furniture section of the show will cover five halls, including the Western & Eastern Hall.

Keith Fisher The funeral of former Floorwise chairman and Salesmark owner Keith Fisher took place on 3 May. He died on 17 April following complications after surgery for cancer. He was 61. ‘Keith will be fondly remembered for his effervescent personality and impact on the industry, which he served so remarkably for over 40 years,’ says Richard Bailey, Floorwise md. Joining the industry as a sales representative for Uniroyale, he joined the Salesmark organisation in 1977 which was then sold to CH Industrial. After the demise of CH Industrial, he set up his own business in 1990 and continued to trade as an independent wholesaler under the Salesmark name. In 1993, he and the Salesmark brand joined Floorwise, before becoming as director in 1997 and chairman from 2004 to 2011. ‘As a character full of life, Keith was responsible for the organisation of many group trips for customers, including the legendary police escorted tuk tuk ride in Thailand…Keith will be missed by everyone in the industry who had the pleasure of knowing him,’ adds Bailey.

Irish agents Litmus Furniture, agent for German bedroom manufacturer Wiemann in the UK and Republic of Ireland, has named Darren McKenna as principal Irish agent, covering Northern Ireland and the north of the Republic as far south as Dublin. Kieron Friel will cover south of Dublin.

SERVICE

Richard Renouf

Water, water Too much or not enough moisture can cause problems It would have been less treacherous on Ben Nevis. I had to position my feet carefully and the jagged corners of the laminate flooring dipped and sprang back menacingly as I took each step. I was trying to walk across the room, but the family had lived with this for weeks as the fitter, retailer and manufacturer disagreed about who was to blame. It was easy to apportion blame: it was entirely due to moisture. The flooring had swollen, there was insufficient expansion allowance and so the tiles had lifted and the joints had broken. What mattered was not blame, but responsibility. Who was responsible for putting things right? The moisture meter showed its highest readings in the broken area of the flooring just in front of what I thought was a cupboard door. When I explained this to the customer she opened the door to show me a beautifully tiled shower wet-room. There was nothing to prevent water spillage at the doorway, just a cover plate where tiles met laminate. Nothing to stop excess water dripping down on to the fibreboard underlay. It didn’t need Sherlock Holmes to solve this. The problem should have

The effect of moisture on a laminate floor

28

Interiors Monthly June 2016

been picked up before the flooring was laid, and thus avoided. Had the manufacturer put enough information on the product? Had the retailer been reasonably observant during the sales process and when measuring the home? Should the installer have discussed the possible problems with the customer at the time of fitting, or taken steps to prevent moisture getting into the gap at the doorway? There had been a number of missed opportunities and now there were many excuses. There was also an upset customer who was being told it was her fault, after all. Discussing the case with the retailer, I learned that the order was placed online so there was no opportunity to assess the suitability of the product or its location. It was therefore down to the fitter who had ignored the obvious, both at the time of fitting and when he looked at the damaged flooring. Moisture can cause serious problems. A kitchen worktop may swell if joints and cutouts are not protected against moisture ingress. Laminate and timber flooring will lift and become dangerous to walk on if no provision is made for

expansion (such as gaps around the perimeter and breaks at least every 8m). Vinyl flooring will ripple if it’s loose laid, or blister if it’s stuck down on to a subfloor with too much moisture. Lack of moisture can be a problem also. Cabinet and dining furniture may crack if placed in a hot, dry conservatory or flooring can shrink after installation if it isn’t left in the room to acclimatise for the right period before it is fitted. It may cost a bit more to identify and deal with any potential problems, but just one job that is saved from going as badly wrong as this one will more than make up for it. And that’s before thinking about the damage to your reputation. From moisture, back to my large tea (or lack of it), the subject of the previous column. There has been no response from the well-known retailer after I responded to its survey about the service I received. I wonder how much the survey cost? Clearly much more than it thinks, as it’s not using the information it provides and so is missing opportunities. Visit: www.richard-renouf.com Richard Renouf is an independent furnishings consultant

Shades of nature

Beachcomer

Brockway has expanded its undyed ranges There is a rare, natural beauty to Brockway’s undyed wool carpets. The Beachcomber and award-winning Rare Breeds collections are made of 100% undyed new wool, in a loop pile and velvet twist respectively. These ranges are characteristic of Brockway, which is setting out its stall as ‘the home of wool carpets’ with its signature wool-rich carpets. The Rare Breeds collection won the British Wool award for Best British Wool Carpet Created with the Planet in Mind at the International Wool Carpet and Rug Awards 2016. It is inspired by the exceptional qualities of Britain’s oldest and rarest breeds of hill sheep from which each carpet is made – Kerry Hill, Cotswold, Norfolk Horn, Soay, Manx, Moorit, Balwen, Jacob, Black Welsh and Ryeland. The range uses two-ply yarn from these unusual breeds and is made in a 50oz weight to be soft to the touch and hard wearing for all areas of the home. The chunky luxury of Beachcomber comes from the four-ply yarn and is available in three distinctive designs – from a chunky level loop, a high and low loop to a rib effect. ‘These contemporary carpets are naturally durable and versatile suiting every room of the house. They come in 4m and 5m widths, which means virtually any room size can be fitted without a join,’ says Shaun Lewis, Brockway sales director. Their introduction is an expansion to Brockway’s range of undyed wool carpets, which includes its signature Lakeland Herdwick. ‘Our original rare breed range Lakeland Herdwick is very popular with people looking for a natural-effect carpet. Rare Breeds and Beachcomber complement Lakeland Herdwick so well,’ says Lewis. Rare Breeds and Beachcomber feature Brockway’s eco-friendly Envirobac carpet-backing that is lighter weight, emission-free and can be recycled at the end of its useful life. Sensit’s microfine filaments are also translucent, giving the carpet a silk look and a luxurious edge that’s proving popular, according to Geert Vanden Bossche, Balta Broadloom marketing director. ‘We’ve seen a big shift in consumer taste and once where matt twists were all the rage, we’ve seen a more contemporary feel come through, with silk effects becoming more popular. Creating a luxurious atmosphere, these new styles are big news and Sensit delivers with a silken look that’s elegant in any setting,’ he says. Cleanable with diluted bleach, Sensit carpets are practical with a resilient two-

CIFF NECC Shanghai 7-10 September

EXHIBITION GUIDE

Oriental success Founded in 1998, China International Furniture Fair, takes place every March in Guangzhou and in Shanghai in September. The 38th edition of the exhibition is on 7-10 September at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai) in the Hongqiao district of the city and covers 400,000sqm. It is 1.5km from the Hongqiao Transportation Hub, and is connected with Hongqiao Airport and Hongqiao Railway Station via the city’s Metro Line 2. The complex is also one or two hours drive from the major cities in the Yangtze River Delta. Construction of further links between the NECC and the Hongqiao Transportation Hub are expected to be completed this month while the InterContinental hotel at the NECC is due to open in time for the show. The fair covers home furniture, office furniture, home decor and home textiles, outdoor and leisure and machinery and raw materials. The CIFF-Modern Home Furniture Show will cover five halls, including the Western and Eastern Hall in order to provide exhibitors and buyers with broader showcasing

space and brand development. March’s 37th edition attracted 168,881 visitors: an increase of 13,918 2015 with the show expanding from 680,000sqm to 750,000sqm, using the PWTC Expo for the outdoor and leisure sector. CIFFModern Home Furniture, International Furniture Hall and Outdoor and Leisure were all bigger than in 2015. There was also evidence that retailers spent longer at the show: while visitor numbers rose for the first two days, they jumped by 22.5% on the third day of the show’s first phase. The show further improved its internationalisation with the International Furniture Hall for Home Furniture increasing by 50% to 30,000sqm as part of the 90,000sqm overseas sector. International brands included Ashley, HTL, Manwah, Natuzzi, Chateau Dax and Koda while pavilions from Turkey, Malaysia, Thailand and Korea jointly showcased products with regional features. Under the theme of Intelligence, Customization and Internet Plus, the show highlighted innovation such as virtual reality products, integrated

London Fabric Chelsea Football Club 27-28 February

EXHIBITION GUIDE

United approach The London Fabric Show brings together buyers, producers and suppliers of superior fabrics from the UK and other European countries for the upholstery, bed and soft furnishing industries. From 27-28 February 2017 the British Furniture Manufacturers Association will host the show in the executive boxes of Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge stadium for the third time. The variety of fabrics on display encompasses a huge mix including wools, jacquards, chenilles, velvets, tweeds, mattress ticking, backing fabrics, curtain lining, high performance polyester fabrics, graded leathers, cottons and linens. Many of the producers also offer buyers the opportunity to have exclusive designs and colours. This year companies from the UK,

including Abraham Moon & Sons, Art of the Loom, British Velvets and Warwick, exhibited alongside companies from Belgium including Ter Molst, Symphony Mills, Boyteks Textiles, Escolys, Muvantex and Green Street Textiles, together with Interfabrics & Antecuir from Spain, Marsteks, Kets Textil and Adoksan from Turkey and Prosetex from Italy. Originally just for Belgian mills, the show now includes other high quality fabric producers and offers a unique opportunity to see top end textile producers in one place. ‘In our membership we have a great number of prestigious UK upholstery companies and see it as important that we organise this show to give them, and other UK manufacturers and retailers who use fabrics, an unparalleled opportunity to see some of the best

fabric producers in the world – together in one venue,’ says Jackie Bazeley, BFM md. The executive boxes provide comfortable and private exhibition space, and the scale of the stadium offers a dramatic backdrop. It is also easy to get to, with an underground station only two minutes walk away from the ground. ‘The 2016 show was a great success with visitor numbers up and exhibitors reporting a very successful show. In 2017 the show is expanding and will have around 40 exhibitors, including additional manufacturers from Turkey and the UK. While the number of exhibitors is increasing to offer visitors even more choice, the quality will remain high so the integrity of the show will remain unchanged,’ adds Bazeley. EXHIBITION GUIDE Left: The 2015-16 winners and runners-up Below left: Furniture Village won Multiple Beds Retailer and Harrison Spinks Bed Manufacturer at the 2015 awards (below right)

Awards revamped The National Bed Federation Bed Industry Awards will have a new look when they are unveiled at The Bed Show in September. Recognising and celebrating the most successful bed retailers, manufacturers and suppliers, they are judged by an independent panel. Winners will be announced at The Bed Show Gala Dinner on Tuesday 20 September, which will be hosted by comedian Marcus Brigstocke. The Multiple Bed Retailer, Independent Bed Retailer and Etailer awards have been replaced by Bed Retailer of the Year which will be split into two awards: those with a beds turnover of more than £5m and those with a beds turnover of less than £5m. And new for this year is the Judges Choice Award. The Bed Manufacturer of the Year and Bed

Component Supplier of the Year categories remain. Former winners say the awards have had a major impact on their business. ‘The thing I am most proud of is the fact we are now firmly on the map as a bed retailer. Winning the Multiple Bed Retailer of the Year award two years running [2014 and 2015] has really allowed us to shout about this, increasing consumer awareness around the fact that we don’t just sell beds, but that we are experts in selling beds,’ says Rebecca Maloy, Furniture Village bed buyer. Mattressonline.co.uk won Etailer of the Year in 2015. ‘Winning this prestigious accolade has further established our company as the leading online mattress and bed retailer. It has significantly improved our revenue and conversions

and, most importantly, gives our customers the confidence to buy with us – and keep coming back,’ says Steve Adams, Mattressonline.co.uk director. ‘Since the award win, we’ve seen a significant increase in demand for our beds; as a result we are investing and expanding our manufacturing capacity to ensure we keep up with this demand,’ says Simon Spinks, Harrison Spinks md. ‘Receiving a Bed Show award has fast become the must-have accolade in the industry. It acknowledges success and innovation and the competition gets increasingly fiercer each year. Winning is also a fantastic way to raise your profile and is a great opportunity to showcase your achievements, your people and your business,’ says Jessica Alexander, NBF executive director. EXHIBITION GUIDE

Raising the bar It was clear among the carefully curated exhibitors at April’s Proposte that an artisan approach was key. Among the British companies exhibiting, Abraham Moon, The Isle Mill, Thistle Mills, Hield, MYB Textiles and Standfast & Barracks, the secret of survival has been to go niche and get nifty. Often family owned companies producing wool and natural fibre fabrics with a heritage stretching many generations, they have evolved and prospered by diversifying their product portfolio, some of them originally starting out in fabric for clothing. Today they focus on traditional quality products – sometimes with a contemporary twist – and working closely with customers to produce bespoke collections. With a good proportion of their business in export to top end customers, the show delivers the important international buyers they look for and who lap up the quality British naturalswith-provenance story. ‘A lot of the mills have moved upmarket and have taken a more customised approach. They are much

70

Interiors Monthly June 2016

more prepared to work with you to adapt fabrics and individualise them – everyone now wants exclusive, signature fabrics so they have a point of difference,’ says Matt O’Flynn, Collins and Hayes md and BFM chairman. This flexibility extends to minimum order quantities. Where once it was often 200m, it can now be significantly less. And where previously there were specific upholstery ranges and different fabrics for curtains, the crossover between the two is much more fluid. ‘Who are we to tell a designer what they should use for what,’ said one manufacturer. This need to please customers has seen the bar raised in other ways, with the level of artistry among international furnishing fabric producers. Redaelli Velluti, for example, restores vintage machinery to rework traditional techniques and produce contemporary hand-crafted fabrics, including brushed and embossed velvets. It demonstrated its digital printing skills with displays of comic strip images on velvet. Fabric printing specialist Standfast & Barracks, demonstrated its precision

printing: ‘Customers are all looking to develop their own niche so it’s all about creating a point of difference – and that’s what we help companies to do,’ says Nick Adams, Standfast & Barracks sales manager. Algemene Two repurposed archive patterns to produce an array of contemporary colour woven jacquards including mohair velvets and cut-pile velvets. The Wallace collection from Enzo degli Angiuoni was inspired by Wallace Simpson’s love of Chanel clothes, the launch of a black and white upholstery fabric range, including an interpretation of Chanel’s signature houndstooth check, was created featuring boucle yarns as used by the fashion house. Italy’s Tempotest Para meanwhile embraced pattern and colour with a literal library of new fabrics – all based on classic stories including Oliver Twist and Jungle Book. The company specialises in natural fibres with printed jacquards in solution dyed acrylic and solution dyed polyester. Visit: www.propostefair.it

Revving up Sealy previews its latest models Sealy’s Spring Show at the Brooklands Museum in Surrey (17-18 May) previewed a range of new products four months ahead of The Bed Show. The Ortho collection is for people of above average stature, and features the new PostureTech Zero Deflection spring system with edge guard, providing consistent support across the mattress. Buyers were also shown Sealy’s Pocket collection. This range includes the Teramo 1400, termed ‘the best mattress tested in years’ by Which? last June. The Napoli 1200, awarded the Which? Best Buy accolade for the third year in 2015 and endorsed by Allergy UK for the reduction of dust mites, was also on show. Both, along with the rest of the collection, are topped with a deep layer of Innergetic latex for comfort and pressure relief and eco-friendly Tencel fibres to help keep users cool and dry. The Hybrid collection features temperature adjusting Adaptive technology and Geltex with the pressure relieving properties of memory foam, encouraging a deeper state of sleep. Other products on show included the

Posturepedic, Ortho and Anniversary collections. ‘We had a fantastic turnout at the show, with our visitors getting an exclusive viewing of new products. We are really pleased with how exceptionally well our two new collections were received, but we’ll keep those under wraps for now. It’s great to meet with our regular buyers, and lovely to see a few new customers along the way too. It was a pleasure to showcase these for the fifth year running at the historic Brooklands Museum,’ says Neil Robinson, Sealy sales and marketing director. Visitors included Harlequins rugby players, Sam Twomey and Matt Hopper, who tested all Sealy mattresses on display. The pair are the latest athletes to take part in Sealy’s World of Sport campaign, promoting the intrinsic link between sleep and sporting success. The company is also working with weightlifting champion Zoe Smith; Olympic snowboarder Zoe Gillings-Brier; Ironman veteran Andrew Holgate; and champion bodybuilder Kim Wilson. Like all great ideas, Sealy Hybrid is both simple and effective. It combines Sealy Posturepedic springs with Geltex, a unique, patented, gel infused foam that is quite simply the most advanced sleeping material available. It has all the pressure relieving properties of traditional memory foam but provides a level of "push back" body support that memory foam lacks. Which means you get all the pressure relief that you would find in a "spring free" mattress, combined with all the support you would expect from a Sealy Posturepedic. Quite simply, it’s the best of both worlds. All Hybrid models also feature Adaptive, a ‘dynamic response’ textile that reacts to temperature and moisture.

Romancing the stone Karndean has added a contemporary twist to its Da Vinci collection Karndean Designflooring is introducing 11 stone designs and five borders to its Da Vinci LVT collection. Bringing the natural beauty and intricate textures of real stone indoors, the distinct 18in x 12in tiles take inspiration from weathered steel, natural stone and woven fabric and offer a fresh palette of colours. The three groups – Weathered Steel, Natural Stone and Woven Fabric – explore the latest trends in interior design including natural weathering, fossilisation and woven fabrics, and continues Karndean’s ability to take products from the natural world and recreate them in LVT. ‘Following the success of our Da Vinci Wood update last year, we’re excited to be introducing fresh stone designs to complete the collection,’ says Scott Cochrane, Karndean Designflooring sales

78

director. ‘The new stone designs offer our independent retail network our popular 12in x 18in rectangular tile in a higher specification for residential spaces. Likewise, these designs offer unique detailing and interpretations of real stone that are easy to clean and maintain in the home.’ From the striking rust and weathered tones of Molten to the subtle, dark hues of Carbon, all four colourways in Weathered Steel – Molten, Iron Ore, Eisen and Carbon – present the transformation of steel over time, and are ideally placed against plain walls, exposed brick and simple furnishings for a stark, industrial feel. Offering a sophisticated and understated look, the four Natural Stone designs feature the realistic grain and fossilisation of limestone. Designed for traditional and

contemporary spaces, there are the creamy tones of Dune and Bluff and darker, grainer Sable and Drift. The three designs in Woven Fabric – Burnet, Cambric and Sindon – challenge what is traditionally thought of as stone and offer modern, natural colours with a minimalistic look and subtle strands across each tile. Taking inspiration from natural fabrics and concrete combined, the designs can be purposely misleading and interpreted as natural woven fabric or lightly brushed concrete. Introducing additional design variations, there is an option of contrasting and complementary borders and design strips. The complete Da Vinci collection will now feature 18 stone and 18 wood designs, all available with a recently extended lifetime residential guarantee. Visit: www.karndean.com

Gallery concept Latest innovations from Flooring One Flooring One used the recent Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show to highlight its latest ranges to members and potential-members. The group introduced The Gallery Collection by displaying large pieces of carpet of one colour to allow retailers to see and touch the product with the other colour options underneath. Although only designed for the show, a number of members said they wanted to introduce the display technique to their stores. Gallery was created to increase the average order value in response to higher sales of polypropylene ranges that have reduced order values. It has four two-ply wool twists that

retail from £27.99 to £43.99 and four berber loops that retail from £29.99 to £59.99. The collection is completed with the 100% undyed wool Glencoe, retailing at £46.99 per sqm in a 4m width; the 100% wool three-ply Folkweave (£43.99 per sqm) and Stornaway (£47.99 per sqm) in 5m widths; and the chunky Inverness 100% wool in a 4m width (£59.99 per sqm). The 100 option rug collection was updated with about 30% of new designs and a new cut-length artificial grass offer debuted. Buying power Joining Greendale offers members better purchasing deals and other benefits Greendale Carpets & Flooring is a unique group that supplies carpets for its members on a non-profit basis through its own stockholding warehouse. The group has more than 50 suppliers and over 100 own-labelled carpet ranges all renamed to colour level and competitively priced. These include brand leaders as well as exclusives that offer members enhanced value and are all ordered via its office and support facilities at Hereford. Relabelling enables members to compete with multiple own-label ranges, widely distributed manufacturer’s products and Internet marketed ranges and gives them a local exclusivity. The group actively discourages online marketing or national advertising as the member in their local area is the priority. The group also produces bespoke in-store displays for members to show the group’s ranges as well as Greendale branded tombolas and lecterns. All Greendale members belong to BIRA, the association of independent retailers, and thereby qualify for benefits including preferential credit card rates. The group has its own website with

Delivering solutions Metro’s mobile service is giving retailers a fresh look Many independents aspire to have access to the kind of marketing solutions of much larger organisations but rarely have the time, money or resources to do it. The Metro Group has always looked for new ways to offer benefits to members and 18 months ago launched a mobile marketing vehicle equipped with printing, display and sign making equipment able to provide bespoke marketing material on-site and on demand. The service has proven to be a great success with more than 50 members – from Aberdeen to the Isle of Wight to Northern Ireland – having visits so far and the service is also attracting new retailers to join the group. One such member was The Carpet Gallery in Southampton which joined in late 2015. In December the marketing service arrived and transformed the appearance of the business with a new logo design and colour scheme that was then used for signage, internal and external displays. Displays and signage were manufactured off-site and were fitted within two to three weeks. Steve Moralee, Metro marketing consultant, who works with his son Adam, says: ‘When we originally came up with the concept of providing a marketing service to members on their doorstep we always thought we would be doing work such as labelling, pricing and POS. The reality is we have worked on much larger projects including major external signage. ‘The main benefit to retailers is our understanding of the flooring trade. I have worked with independent flooring retailers for 27 years and although no two shops are the same, the business is. We are not only able to make up signage and POS but also effectively design it. Most retailers using a designer or printer would usually find they have to work hard themselves to get the right results instead of having ideas presented to them. ‘Our service does it all. We design, we make, we fit. No job too big,

84

too small or too far away,’ he adds. The mobile service is backed by a larger facility in the North East of England with the ability to not only look after retailers needs on-site but also design, manufacture and despatch material at any time. Visit www.carpet1st.co.uk

Ready for action Panacea has built up its offer, sales team and stockholding For almost a year Panacea has been preparing to supply UK furniture retailers with a range of high quality, full leather sofas that are available for store delivery within 72 hours. Following an official launch at London’s O2 Arena in November 2015, a successful first exhibition at the January Furniture Show and appointing a network of UK sales agents, Panacea is starting to deliver on its concept. ‘It’s been a long time coming,’ says James Appleby, Panacea co-founder. ‘But we are now in a position where we have

86

Interiors Monthly June 2016

secured a respectable number of shopfloors with multiple models, have all of our marketing material available, have informed knowledgeable industry professionals driving the business forward and, most important, a sizeable stockholding. James is keen to stress the simplicity of its USP. ‘We aren’t here to compete with the larger established brands who offer a whole raft of colours and materials. Our offering is a small number of SKUS that are immediately available. We aren’t aware of anyone else stocking full leather

products of this quality – a range that includes models manufactured by the Natuzzi Group – anywhere in the UK. Our aim is to provide retailers with the option of capturing a portion of the market that they may currently be missing: those customers who want a well priced quality product but aren’t prepared to wait, and we’re sure there are plenty of them,’ he says. The new mobile friendly website shows videos of its products, such as its Move It pads, self-adhesive felt pads and screw-in Quickclick gliders, in use. It also allows retailers to place orders online. Visitors can use the website to find their nearest Stroolmount stockist. All stockists will have their full contact details listed, links to their website and Googlemaps Pinpoints. ‘We have also started a promotional campaign to the public in At Home magazine with others coming up throughout the year, seen by over one million retail customers. Never throw away a sale: don’t direct customers to DIY stores: stock Stroolmount products. When they need replacing, customers will come to your store and see your new furniture and flooring – so it gives you an opportunity for another sale,’ says Gill Finch, Stroolmount md. ‘We’ve had a busy and exciting few months with the updated website and the consumer marketing. I’d like to say a big thank you to all our customers past and present for supporting us by stocking our furniture and flooring products and helping us to grow our business.‘ Stroolmount’s latest products include castor cups with felt bases, in 44mm and 60mm diameters, to help reduce marks, scratches or indentations. Clip-on radiator pipe rosettes are available in wood or plastic to hide expansion gaps in laminate or wooden floors. The wood rosettes, available in light or dark finishes, come in two halves which click together, while the plastic version is a single ring featuring a laser incision for easy installation. A multi-product display stand has also been introduced. Visit: www.stroolmount.co.uk
