EDITOR’S COMMENT

Andrew Kidd EDITOR

What is done... As 2018 will bring a new relationship with Europe and the rest of the world, we need to get on with it: there is no other choice. I said last month that retailers could teach both of the Remain and Leave campaigns how to engage with the public. Who knows what might have happened if either side had been able to do so. But what’s done is done and companies will have to cope with the changes that will be heading our way, depending on how Brexit talks go. What is needed is for those politicians who were disparaging each other before the vote to now work together and restore confidence to financial markets, exchange rates and consumers. Meanwhile, among Carpetright’s update on the roll out of its latest store format were comments that apply outside the chain. ‘Power has transferred from the retailer to the customer in the last decade. expect whatever they want, whenever they want with swift, efficient delivery. Customers are all very quick to tell the world on various social media platforms how it went. The default position is rapidly becoming excellent service, with consumers sharing only their bad experiences, which can quickly go viral severely impacting brand reputation.’ While the Carpetright name was wellknown among consumers, half said they wouldn’t shop there. ‘Back in July 2014 our score on the independent retail review website Trustpilot was 1.7 out of 10. While many colleagues were focusing on providing the best service, the culture of the business was about taking orders, making sales and earning commission.’ As part of efforts to counter this, staff will get bonuses based on successful completion of the job and ratings on its Do We Measure Up consumer feedback index. In June its Trustpilot score had gone up to 8.7, showing that even tankers can be (eventually) turned around. Thanks to all of you who voted in the Interiors Monthly Awards 2016. I’m looking forward to revealing the winners to you in the next issue.

Carpetright to roll out £10m format to 90 stores Carpetright will spend £10m rolling out its new store concept, with at least 90 of its highest turnover locations, where it ‘faces competition from a new local market entrant’, and high street branches receiving the revamp. Large stores will cost £20 per sqft, about £200,000 a store and high street stores will cost £40 per sqft, about £80,000 a store. Payback will take 18 months. The chain says the new brand identity will be introduced from 1 July, but ‘it still has to tackle historical perception issues with trust and reputation.’ Its research found that while it had very high brand awareness, only half of consumers would shop at Carpetright. A TV sponsorship package across UKTV’s entertainment and lifestyle channels Home, Really, Alibi, Gold and W and sponsorship of programmes including Escape to the Country, DIY SOS, and Homes Under the Hammer will begin in August, the same time as its fitting service will have Which? Trusted Trader status. More exclusive ranges will be introduced next month with the House Beautiful collection in all branches, alongside a House Beautiful branded LVT range. A Tarkett range of LVT will enable it to compete with Amtico and Karndean, it says. A staff uniform will be introduced in September with an online training academy debuted in the autumn. Four trial stores for the new concept opened last summer and saw combined like for like growth of 9.1% between January and April. They also delivered growth in areas in which the chain has historically underperformed: hard flooring sales rose by 36% and premium branded carpet sales saw a ‘significant double digit’ growth. Interest free credit, introduced on Boxing Day 2014 and expanded a year later, now accounts for 16% of orders and is a ‘key differentiator’ against independent retailers and generated sales four times the average in the past year: £1,216 compared with £331 on non-IFC sales. Underlay sales gained double digit growth across the whole estate. ‘We are embarking on a complete turnaround of the business. We have not rushed into the changes, as we want to carry the majority of our staff with us and there is much

to do. We need to ensure that we can execute the change successfully within our resource capacity and that we can carry out the customer promise effectively so that we become a recommended retailer more consistently,’ says Wilf Walsh, Carpetright ceo. He says building consistency of performance across the chain will be key to success, as branches that score above 75% on its Do We Measure Up? consumer rating index, deliver 15% IFC penetration and 50% underlay penetration enjoy double the like for like sales growth of the rest of the store portfolio. ‘Through updating our brand identity and making it easy for the customer we believe that we can increase consideration of Carpetright and build average transaction values by focusing our staff on introducing IFC; understanding customer needs and selling the right product; selling appropriate underlay and high margin accessories; and providing a seamless, hassle-free experience that will build our trust and reputation,’ he says. The Storeys brand will be withdrawn on 1 September, apart from in the Stockton-on-Tees branch. Walsh says the brand has struggled in recent years due to underinvestment and competing with the parent chain. Where stores cannot be converted to Carpetright branches they will become Carpetright Clearance outlets. Carpetright has had a mixed performance over the summer. Like for like sales dropped by 7.6% in May but were 6.3% up in June, resulting in a 1% drop in the eight weeks to 25 June. ‘Trading conditions in the early weeks of the new financial year have been more challenging, against strong comparatives in the prior year and in a market which is increasingly competitive, particularly in the UK. The outlook has been further complicated by the outcome of the EU referendum and we are cautious about the impact the associated uncertainty will have on consumer confidence,’ adds Walsh. Like for like UK sales rose by 2.8% in the year to 30 April, with total sales down 1.5% at £391m. Underlying UK operating profit was up £17.5% at £16.8m.

Aiming high: Big Shots, The Furniture Makers’ Company’s annual clay pigeon shoot fundraising event, is set to raise £28,500 for the industry’s charity. A record 38 teams took part in this year’s event, including Blum, Breasley, BrightHouse, Celtheath, Clarenco, Creo, DemandWare, Ercol, G Plan Upholstery, Furniture Village, Gainsborough Beds, Headlam, KI, Natuzzi, Peroda Furniture, Tempur and ViSpring. Steve Jones from Clarenco was crowned Top Male Gun, while Claudia Cooper of Furniture Village claimed Top Female Gun. The Top Team Prize went to Haskins Hot Shots, while Headlam (also runner-up in the team award) won the Four Man Flurry. Top Gun (Novice) was Adrian Fawcett (Silentnight Group), Bottom Team was Bird Busters (Furniture Village) and Worst Male Shot of the Day David Sampson (Knoll). Pictured is the Headlam team with Ben Burbridge, Furniture Makers’ Company master (centre) and Charlie Harrison, Furniture Village director of marketing and Big Shots organiser (second right).

ScS sees orders increase

people

Orders have accelerated in recent weeks for upholstery and carpet chain ScS, which expects higher than forecast profits. At the start of the year like for like sales orders were up 8.8% for the 25 weeks to 16 January. The growth then rose to 12% for the 37 week period. Now it has said orders were 14.6% higher in the 45 weeks to 4 June. ‘We are delighted that trading through the two key May bank holidays exceeded our initial expectations and the group continues to show excellent progress on a like for like basis in all retail categories,’ says David Knight, ScS ceo.

The British Wool Marketing Board has launched the British Wool Premium Label Partnership with manufacturers to promote a higher content of British grown wool in their products A new label – the Gold British Wool label – and the existing Platinum label are included in the new scheme. The labels clearly define a higher level of British wool content in a product: 70% within the wool blend in the case of the Gold label and 100% for Platinum. ‘The Premium Label Partnership defines the manufacturer of the product and their supply chain and ensures that the manufacturer is responsible for ensuring

the content is sourced and verified according to the criteria that is set out by BWMB. BWMB audits the chain and the product is only awarded if the strict content values of the specific label meets the standards,’ says Tim Booth, BWMB marketing manager. He says textile manufacturers have mooted a higher specification label that promotes quality fibre content, particularly in carpet and mattresses. ‘These new labels and the Premium Label Partnership will encourage more to follow suit. The added value to the consumer is that this will be a great investment with superior performance,’ adds Booth. A Gold label has been introduced

Davies is survived by his wife, Petra and children, Tori and Rob. His family has requested any donation should be made to his preferred charity, The Society of St Vincent de Paul. United Carpets has promoted Paul Newton to the board. Newton, 48, has worked in the flooring industry for 31 years and has been operations director since September 2011, with responsibility for the retail operations of the chain’s corporate and franchise stores. Anthony Finegan has joined as commercial director and Emma Foster as office coordinator at Mammoth.

Green award expanded The Furniture Makers’ Company’s Sustainability Award has been opened to all furnishing manufacturers, including fabric and flooring. Now in its fourth year, the award recognises improvements in sustainability in relation to manufacturing of furniture and furnishings. The award considers all aspects of how a business is operated: waste and energy management, design process, product improvements, packaging, transportation, procurement, end of life management, client relationships, supplier management, employee engagement and corporate social responsibility. ‘The goal of the Sustainability Award is to

recognise and champion companies determined to leave a fine legacy to future generations. We believe that by extending entries to all UK manufacturers we will be achieving our ambition,’ says Paul von der Heyde, FMC Manufacturing Guild Mark committee chairman. UK companies are invited to submit case studies for consideration by judges who will select the manufacturer deemed to have made the best contribution to sustainable manufacturing in the previous year. The size of the business will be taken into account so that the relative importance of their progress can be measured to equalise opportunities.

John Lewis to be a Loafer John Lewis is to sell sofas and footstools designed by rival retailer Loaf. From 1 August the chain will sell three sofas and two footstools in its second tie-up with another retailer: its Oxford Street, London store has a West Elm display. ‘This exclusive collaboration with Loaf is a really exciting development for John Lewis. Its relaxed style fits perfectly into our upholstered product range, offering our customers even more choice and underlining John Lewis’ position as the first destination for design led furniture in the UK,’ says Jo Unsworth, John Lewis upholstery buyer. ‘Both the Loaf and John Lewis customer expects fantastic quality and a customer experience that knocks their socks off, so when we were asked to design an exclusive collection in our usual laid-back, comfy style, we jumped at the opportunity. Having launched Loaf seven and a half years ago, we’re excited to now share our Loaf-y wares across the UK,’ says Charlie Marshall, Loaf founder. The upholstery will be sold in 10 branches and online. Loaf will open its second Loaf Shack store on 15 July. The 5,500sqft store at 103 Lancaster Road, Notting Hill, was previously occupied by Oka. Housed over three floors in a former dairy, the store will have eight rooms plus beds on display in a light-filled New York-style loft space in the eaves with floor to ceiling glass windows.

Three Loaf sofas, including Crumble, will be sold

In common with its Battersea store which opened last October, the emphasis is on relaxing with vintage arcade games, table football, a cinema area playing classic re-runs alongside a mattress testing area. ‘I grew up just around the corner from our new Shack and I used to spend my summer holidays earning a bit of pocket money painting my Dad’s office which was slap-bang opposite. It’s my favourite building in the area and I’ve had my eye on the space for a very long time,’ says Marshall.

Scoring for a century: John Cotton’s gala dinner to mark its 100th anniversary raised more than £33,000 for The Yorkshire Cancer Centre, Kirkwood Hospice, Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice and Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Some 250 people attended the event for suppliers and trade partners. The company has a fundraising target of £100,000 this year.

Dreams’ £3m campaign Bed chain Dreams is embarking on a £3m Replace Every Eight advertising campaign, including TV, radio, national Press, social channels, and video on demand. The TV commercial will build on last August’s advert and will focus on the special, everyday moments in and around the bedroom and show how these evolve over time. Themes include children’s rooms duvet days, family time, 20 somethings and empty nesters. The 40 second launch commercial debuted on ITV1 on 29 June and featured a new Replace Every Eight logo.

Upmarket bed manufacturer and retailer Savoir Beds has opened its first company-owned showroom in the US. The 2,562sqft space in New York’s Upper East Side comes six years after its franchise Soho showroom opened. The showroom spans two floors with a mezzanine. ‘We wanted to embrace elements that alluded to an art gallery,’ says Mandeep Dillon, Savoir creative director, who designed the showroom. ‘The result is an aesthetic that cues visitors to feel as though they are not simply shopping for a bed, but rather a one of a kind work of art. Visitors to the showroom will enjoy natural light that floods through the windows and a comfortable and discreet setting that beautifully complements and highlights our iconic beds.’ The showroom is the company’s 14th, following its opening in Seoul last October.

Try something different Often a new approach is needed to get results A meeting was suggested because the md had said: ‘Something’s not right. We’ve been sending in mystery shoppers for more than a year, but we haven’t seen any improvements for the past four months.’ James, the account manager, asked: ‘Have you thought about video? If we could actually see what goes on between a customer and the salesperson we could get much more information.’ ‘What? Our sales teams spot the mystery shoppers a mile away, they’d definitely spot a camera,’ replied the md. And that’s why we were meeting. James had brought along his colleague, Debbie, and the md had brought along his number two. After a lot of discussion and near death-by-PowerPoint, it was time for James to try to close the deal and win a contract to video mystery shop each branch over the next two months. If this resulted in change, the contract would be extended. ‘I’m still not convinced. If they can spot a mystery shopper, they’re bound to spot someone with a camera,

however well it’s hidden,’ said the md. ‘I can understand why you think that,’ said James. ‘I’m sure if anyone could spot a hidden camera it would be you.’ The md was clearly flattered by the remark. ‘Let’s think about this a bit more,’ James said. ‘Imagine the conversation we’ve had this morning. If one of us had been filming this, you’d have spotted it, wouldn’t you?’ ‘Of course.’ Debbie clicked out of the PowerPoint slides and opened a window at the bottom of the screen. Quickly she got up and stood next to James. As the window opened on the projection screen there was the md with his number two and me, live on camera. ‘One of us has been wearing a hidden camera all the way through our meeting,’ confessed James. ‘Can you work out which of us it is?’ They were side by side and too close to enable us to distinguish from the camera angle who was wearing it. There was nothing visible on either of them that gave anything away.

Do you know what your staff are doing before the customer hands over their cash?

28

Interiors Monthly July 2016

James was in his business shirt with a tie (no tie-clip) and Debbie in a plain white blouse. We could only guess. Then Debbie moved as if to unbutton her blouse and at that moment the screen went black. It was an incredible moment and it won the contract. More incredible was the transformation that came about when we were able to see the shops and the salespeople as customers saw and experienced them. The sales teams were apprehensive at first, but came to value the insight the videos gave. It cost four times as much for each visit, but the results quickly made this a worthwhile investment. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result might be considered pointless. Never be afraid to try something new when change isn’t happening. More capacity Gallery Direct continues to make major investments

Construction work is ahead of schedule

Construction of a 20,000sqft extension to Gallery Direct’s warehouse is ahead of schedule. When finished – work is expected to be complete by September – the extension will increase warehouse space to 80,000sqft. This will be further increased as the expansion will allow the company to create a 20,000sqft mezzanine floor in the original warehouse. The significant investment comes less than two years since it moved to the Sittingbourne, Kent site. Having extra space will allow it to replace offsite storage and improve efficiencies. The company has also invested in its own delivery fleet and recruited a transport manager who has experience of furniture logistics. ‘We need to be in control of transport so we have taken transport in-house. We will have eight lorries, each with a two-man crew. We will offer delivery to stores and DHD: I want to increase DHD to more customers but will take it step by step,’ says Peter Delaney, Gallery Direct md. Gallery Direct has also revamped its website to make it easier to navigate and show its product offer. A trade log-in allows access to the catalogue and pricing.

40

Interiors Monthly July 2016

There has also been major investment in its bed and sofabed manufacturing subsidiary Dreamworks. It is enjoying doubledigit growth each month, with all mattresses and sofabeds made to order, and has increased its workforce by a fifth to 120. The freeholds of its buildings in Westbury, Wiltshire have been bought and a mezzanine floor installed for greater capacity. Visit: www.gallerydirect.co.uk

Rug inspiration Flair Rugs is keeping abreast of trends Flair Rugs is a trend-focused producer of rug designs and its latest collections, Persia and Venice, illustrate this. Following a series of launches earlier in the year, Flair is determined to keep abreast of the latest in interiors, using the show to demonstrate its success in this area. With the Persian rug look being big news the company will showcase the Middle-East inspired Persia collection to its flexible stable. Alongside is Venice, a range boasting high-low pile. ‘At Flair Rugs, we strive to be the first to deliver retailers the very latest in rug design, providing them with an opportunity to pass on cutting edge looks to their customers. Traditionally, if homeowners have desired a “current” look, they have been known to turn to Flair’s newest releases for the design season ahead. I’m delighted to say that this is no different for autumn/winter 2016, with the latest from the Flair think-tank, Persia and Venice,’ says Gareth Davies, Flair Rugs UK sales and marketing director. Persia brings a choice of three designs with six colour variations. ‘This is polypropylene at its very best, producing a high-end super-soft sensation without the use of jute in the backing for an extra forgiving feel. With its strong colour clarity and intricate patterning, there is no better way to gain such authentic design underfoot’, says Davies. Venice comes in two patterned shaggy designs, Imperial and Plazzo, in four colourways. ‘Not only carrying the host of practical benefits associated with polypropylene fibre, these rugs also bring enhanced texture through pile height variation. This is a whole new dimension thanks to the contrast of high shaggy and low loop pile,’ adds Davies. Visit: www.flairrugs.com

Stunning spaces Individual floors from QA Flooring Solutions The Luvanto LVT range from QA Flooring Solutions gives consumers the means to make a statement in any room space. They can choose from a variety of wood, stone, linear and sparkle colours, and a range of striking patterns, to make a truly bespoke floor. ‘The latest additions to the Luvanto range of woods are Black Ash and Winter Oak, which are proving very popular with consumers and interior designers. Black Ash has recently been installed throughout a hotel in Fleet Street, London, and a new-build Innovation Centre in Kings Lynn, Norfolk,’ says Garry Atmore, QA Flooring Solutions marketing manager. ‘The new Linear and Sparkle styles are also creating an impact. They are the perfect solution for retailers and interior designers who want to offer their clients a different dimension in flooring.’ As well as standard wood planks and stone tiles, that can be configured in a number of different ways, a design flooring service is available. Bespoke floors can also be created by selecting from one of the template patterns and putting any combination of colours together. UNDERLAY

Comfortable benefits Interfloor’s updates can help retailers With more people investing in underlay for their new carpet, Europe’s largest manufacturer of underlay and flooring accessories reckons there has never been a better time for retailers to reap the benefits. Interfloor has refreshed its heritage underlay brand, Duralay, to position it as the contractors’ brand of choice for technical applications in the home such as under wood flooring and with underfloor heating. Top-selling Tredaire has also been updated and more contemporarystyled POS materials will be introduced over the summer to enhance the in-store experience. ‘Tredaire is renowned for its underfoot comfort and adding warmth and cosiness to any room, giving an experience akin to treading on air. With many homeowners opting for soft furnishings which create a feeling of luxury, Tredaire Colours Red or Sensation underlays are top end and popular choices which can help to achieve a truly indulgent underfoot experience,’ says Gary Cowley, Interfloor sales director. ‘Colours Red is our top sponge rubber underlay, which performs superbly for comfort and springback. Sponge rubber underlays have been around since the 1950s for very good reason: no other underlay produces quite the same feel underfoot.’ Tredaire Sensation is the top of the range polyurethane foam underlay that is lightweight and therefore easier to handle. ‘It is particularly good at insulation and impact noise reduction and is inherently comfortable underfoot,’ he says. Both Colours Red and Sensation are suitable for living areas where comfort and heat insulation are priorities. All Interfloor underlays are manufactured in the UK while the Gripperrods range is British-engineered, making a good UK combination for retailers and consumers wanting sustainable options. The Gripperrods range has improved branded packaging and POS and comprises four products: Gripperrods Standard, a competitively priced entry level gripper; Gripperrods Tackfast, the bestselling gripper; Gripperrods Professional, a top of the range gripper; and Gripperrods Contract, a wider gripper for more specialist commercial applications. UNDERLAY

Get it right Shoppers need the best product for the job Upselling is a mantra salespeople are constantly given from managers or suppliers, but Floorwise says it needs to be done with responsibility when it comes to underlay. ‘What might be right for a young family home might not be suitable for a mature couple, so it’s important to assess the needs of your customer properly before recommending underlay,’ says Richard Bailey, Floorwise md. ‘Making an exact recommendation will rely on a number of factors, but that’s where really understanding your customer will help,’ he says. The amount of footfall, room, type of building, the floor and whether there’s underfloor heating or not, can all have an impact on what underlay should be recommended. For example, standard density (SD) products are suitable for support in low traffic areas such as guest rooms, whereas halls and stairs will do best with SHD+ (super high density plus) underlays. But, older couples could well make do with HD+ (high density plus) or SHD products on stairs, mainly as the support offered will be enough. In busy family homes, these same products might well fall short of the recovery

60

Interiors Monthly July 2016

longevity required to be a wise solution, he explains. Thickness levels can also be altered to accommodate comfort requirements. For the best plushness in living spaces 11mm SHD+ Supreme delivers the ultimate performance, reckons Bailey, but it may well be too thick for those with mobility issues, where a 7mm option that compresses less underfoot or under wheeled traffic makes more sense. ‘For bedrooms, the 10mm medium density Lusso makes a choice with bags of underfoot comfort without being over specified because it is too dense,’ he says. While recycled PU underlays perform in most domestic tufted carpet situations, there are times when retailers should recommend a more specialised solution. ‘With products like Thermaflow Impact for underfloor heating and our rubber crumb/felt combination styles for use

Floorwise says consumers should be sold the correct product for the task

with traditional axminster carpets, it’s easy to show a thoughtful approach in helping customers find the right underlay,’ he says. ‘We’ve developed an extraordinary range of underlays: whether carpeting a guest room where value is key or kitting out the whole house in suitable specifications combining comfort and support, we provide a useful single source and nationwide coverage across the UK and Republic of Ireland. However, it is the retailer that contains the key to unlocking the collections through thoughtful and considered recommendations that improve sales and customer retention,’ stresses Bailey. Simon Pengelly won the 2016 Jonathan Hindle Prize, awarded to the most outstanding design among this year’s Design Guild Mark Awards. Pengelly won with his Unnia chair range for Inclass. It is a collection of versatile stacking chairs that allows the user to customise by mixing and combining different colour and material variations of the seat, back and frame. He was given the award by Hindle, who founded the Design Guild Marks, and William Knight, Clerkenwell Design Week show director, at the Goldsmiths’ Centre, London last month. ‘Being recognised as the most outstanding design of those selected for a 2016 Design Guild Mark is a huge honour and something we can give back to our client in recognition for their unwavering commitment to us and the work involved in developing such a complex and involved product,’ says Pengelly. ‚‚‚

WOOD AND LAMINATE

Enhancing natural beauty Kährs adds colours to Classic Nouveau Collection Kährs has extended its Classic Nouveau Collection with four colours. The new wood floors in white, grey and earthy tones, join six bestselling designs within the rustic-contemporary range. All of the floors feature a variety of individual colour and texture finishes, which lift the graining and enhance the natural look. The four new designs – pearly white Nouveau Blonde, smoky tinged Nouveau Gray, chestnut coloured Nouveau Rich and chocolate toned Nouveau Tawny – complete Kährs’ natural spectrum, which spans snowy white to ebony tones. Tactile surface treatments include brushing, staining and smoking, and all the designs have a durable matt prefinish giving the surface a distinct lustre. Classic Nouveau floors are made from sustainable oak and have a multi-layered construction for optimum stability. Individual boards measure 2,200mm/ 2,420mm x 187mm/200mm x 15mm and feature Kährs’ glueless Woodloc joint. Green, saffron, chocolate, grey and creamy wall shades are colour partners for the four new designs that can be visualised on the online room selector. Earthborn Claypaint options include Mister Toad, Seagull, Straw and Whisker for Nouveau Rich and Nouveau Tawny. For Nouveau Blonde, St John, Rocky Horse and White pick out the floor’s bright tones, while Fresh Air, Humpty

Classic Nouveau Gray

Dumpty and Riverbank complement Nouveau Gray’s smoky hues. The introduction follows the debut of the Chevron and Domani collections. Chevron has a modern, plank format made up of 19 angled strips. Bevelled edges between the strips reinforce the chevron design and parallelogram short ends create the continuous V-shaped pattern. All boards are brushed to create a tactile lived-in look, that complements the warm white, weathered grey, classic brown and dark brown colour tones and oak graining. Chevron includes four on-trend

Classic Nouveau Blonde

patterned wood floors to easily create a traditional parquet-look with speed. Domani includes seven new one-strip floors, with a discreet rustic grain and a hard wax oil finish. Each of the seven floors has an individual look, spanning pearlescent Chiaro to deep, dark Scurro. The rustic designs, in oak and hard maple, have a more discreet surface than most country timber grades, with fewer knots but lots of colour variation. Combined with a hard wax oil finish, Domani provides a strong, natural appearance with a mellow lustre. Visit: www.kahrs.co.uk

Additions to Balterio’s Tradition Sculpture range include the Barn Oak and Wild Mesquite decors. Tradition Sculpture is designed to reflect pure craftsmanship with the natural surface of the oak laminate planks handcrafted down to the smallest detail. Its rustic and authentic character features a rough, hand-scraped look in combination with four-sided V-grooves. Malt Teak decor has been added to the Tradition Sapphire collection with its rustic character of hand-worked wooden floors. A rough plank floor and randomly chiselled V-grooves bring nostalgia into the home, with the hand-scraped finish adding authentic character. The 1,261mm x 190.5mm x 9mm planks in both collections also have the True To Nature embossed finish for the feel of a real wood floor and feature 25-year residential and 12-year contract warranties. Thanks to the True Matching technology, accessories such as skirting boards and profiles match the laminate flooring. Balterio accessories also have a lacquer overlay to make them more scratch-resistant. The ComfortSound Base and ComfortSound Pro underlays help avoid compression over time and loss of performance in sound reduction and levelling. Both have an integrated dampscreen for protection against rising damp while cutting the underlay around obstacles is made easier thanks to its imprint. Visit: www.balterio.com

Cleanability is at the top of the agenda for Leoline With school holidays around the corner, children across the country will soon be causing havoc at home, rejoicing in the magic of summer and giving floors quite a bit of abuse while they are at it. Pretty much anything that is outside will probably find its way inside on the bottom of feet, so cleaning can be high on the agenda for hassled parents. ‘Grout lines in tiles and joins between wood planks are great at harbouring dirt, but with Leoline floors there’s the look without the drawback,’ says Victoria Hemelaer, Leoline product manager. ‘Our textured Natural Look and Feel technology is incredibly realistic, but vinyl is really easy to clean just with simple mopping and vacuuming. There’s no worries about making it too wet, nor

Stonemark Rocky

74

Interiors Monthly July 2016

about having to use special cleaners and getting on knees to scrub grout lines, just mop and go.’ A permanent polyurethane coating on the vinyl surface, Superguard, makes Leoline floors resistant to scuffs and spills, which is good for high traffic areas such as kitchens and hallways where the threat of lasting stains and marks are a possibility. Simply wiped away to leave no lasting tell-tale signs behind, the floor keeps looking good for longer. Superguard also makes Leoline cushion flooring easier to clean with most dirt lifted with a clean mop and water. ‘The easy clean nature of Leoline vinyl flooring isn’t just for summer and when the kids are home, it’s a sensible choice all year round,’ says Hemelaer.

‘Add to the mix the added cleanability and dirt resistance of our Superguard equipped floors, and the reason for choosing Leoline is even more compelling for those worried about living with their floor on a daily basis. ‘And this is before you look at the huge array of stylish designs, wear warranties of up to 15 years, great underfoot comfort, acoustic absorption and thermal insulation. In fact, there are quite a few compelling reasons to consider Leoline as a flooring choice in busy family homes,’ she adds. The Leoline 2016 collection is featured on the brand’s new website along with galleries and a style blog to bring inspiration to stores and homes. Visit: www.leoline.co.uk

Extended family Serene has added to its dining and chair ranges

Above: Kelso occasional chair Left: Guildford dining table Bottom: Lauren sofabed

Established as a supplier of beds, headboards, daybeds and sofabeds, Serene’s expansion into new areas of the home furnishing market continues in 2016 with an extended dining collection. The dining collection was unveiled at last year’s Manchester Furniture Show; alongside the recliner collection of motion furniture. It has now been expanded ‘sensitively to reflect current and emerging consumer trends for dining to inspire a new period of innovative dining room design,’ says Tasleem Tasab, Serene founder. There is a range of dining tables and chairs in an eclectic mix of styles, complemented by a palette of fabric colours in plains, tartans, stripes and florals. Table finishes are in oak and walnut. Customers can create their own look by choosing chair legs to match table finishes while chairs can be upholstered in one or several fabric colour-ways, including faux leather. Occasional pieces are also included – sideboards, coffee and lamp tables – to sit alongside the dining furniture or to extend the desired look into the wider home. Also new for 2016 is a family of occasional chairs, the creation of which saw the Serene team embark on a journey into the world of chair comfort, design and manufacture. ‘The launch of the occasional chair collection took years of

78

planning. We never rush product development, choosing instead to observe past, current and future trends before creating something new, to the benefit of both consumer and retailer alike,’ says Tasab. Alongside the expansion is a new dining brochure, one of Serene’s largest and most diverse to date. ‘It presents something for every taste, budget and home. It is a collection that provides retailers with every opportunity of making a sale,’ he adds. Visit: www.serene.co.uk
