EDITOR’S COMMENT

New order It’s been a busy month on the corporate front, with major acquisitions across the furniture and flooring industries The most significant is the end of Morris as a furniture supplier, following the sale of its four brands to Sofa Brands International and Radford Furniture (see page 6). For SBI, the deal gives it the opportunity to enhance the G Plan brand. It can now coordinate cabinet designs alongside upholstery, rather than wondering what the latest decisions in Glasgow will be, and market it as much more of a full lifestyle brand. For the newly named Nathan Group, the addition of Morris, Zone and Relaxateeze to Nathan and Sutcliffe gives it a turnover of £20m. There will undoubtedly be cost savings across the group and opportunities to cross-sell, but maximising the brands to consumers will prove harder than for SBI as

for many shoppers brand recognition (with some exceptions) starts and finishes with the retailer. Victoria has remained on the acquisition trail as Geoff Wilding continues to transform the group (see page 6). While Wilding has collected almost £12m by reducing his shareholding to 42%, other shareholders won’t be grumbling. When Wilding became executive chairman on 3 October 2012, Victoria’s share price was £2.525. By July 2014 they had reached £4.625 before dropping to £1.60 when the group’s cut-off point for receiving a £2.92 special dividend passed and the payment of the dividend triggered the agreement that saw Wilding receive new shares to the equivalent of 50% of the company. Since then it has been on an upward path, reaching £12.25 at the time of writing. Warren Buffett seems to have missed a trick. Victoria has still a long way to go before it could replicate Brintons’ latest purchase: Poland’s largest carpet and rug producer Agnella. About 3million sqm of carpet, rugs and runners are produced in Poland and Agnella makes two-thirds of it. Talk about domestic strength.

Radford buys Morris trio as SBI unites G Plan brands Morris Furniture Group has sold its four furniture brands. G Plan Cabinets has been acquired by Sofa Brands International. SBI, owner of G Plan Upholstery, has yet to comment on plans for its move into cabinet, but Morris says all ranges will be discontinued. Nathan and Sutcliffe owner Radford Furniture has bought Morris, Zone and Relaxateeze to form Nathan Group. Morris parent company H Morris & Co Furniture will own 20% of the enlarged group. ‘The Morris family and the board of H Morris & Co would like to thank its customers, suppliers, and especially all its management, employees and sales people for their superb support over its many years and wish both Nathan Group and Sofa Brands International every success in the future with their new acquisitions,’ said a Morris statement. Its Glasgow head office ‘will be closed for redevelopment in the near future.’ ‘The acquisition of the three Morris brands is a unique opportunity to bring together three great British names, to strengthen each brand as part of a new Nathan Group which has such heritage in the industry. Together we can provide our retail customers with the best quality cabinet and upholstery,’ says Nicholas Radford, Nathan Group chairman. Robert Morris has become a director of Nathan Group. ‘This is an exciting time and we’re delighted that Nicholas and his team have acquired the business and will continue to invest and evolve the name of Morris within British retail,’ he says. Each of the three brands will remain as independent operations, led by Andrew Cochrane, and the different

product and brand offerings of Morris, Nathan and Sutcliffe remain unchanged. ‘We intend to build on the successful products within the portfolio and to continue to develop the individual identities and propositions of each of the three Morris brands. The existing sales team will continue in representing us,’ says Cochrane. Operations for the three Morris brands will be brought into Nathan Group’s base in Todmorden, Lancashire. Paul Lamb has been appointed md of Nathan Furniture. In July, Morris Furniture sold its contract division to Dams International and wrote off £3m. In the year to 31 January 2014, the group made a loss of £1.7m as sales fell from £16.9m to £13.3m. In July Robert Morris said the domestic furniture operations were profitable. ‘We’re much happier where we are. We’ve had the writedowns, we’re still strong balance sheet-wise and we’re debt free. So you can’t actually want for much more,’ he told The Herald.

Wilding cashes in shares while Victoria snaps up fourth firm Geoff Wilding, Victoria executive chairman, has sold £11.175m of shares in the carpet manufacturer as it agreed its fourth acquisition in the past 19 months. Wilding says he sold the shares to help satisfy continuing institutional demand and he has no plans for further sales. Improving liquidity of shares and widening the group’s shareholder base ‘will become increasingly important as we continue to grow Victoria into a substantial business. I remain the largest shareholder in Victoria with almost 42% of the shares and, given this fact,

6

Interiors Monthly September 2015

shareholders can be assured I remain committed to Victoria’s objective: “to create wealth for our shareholders”. I will not be selling any further shares in the foreseeable future,’ he says. The group has agreed to pay £16.4m for Australian carpet manufacturer Quest, with £11.5m paid up front and £4.9m paid in three annual instalments. The deal is being funded from existing facilities. Quest had sales of £28.1m in the year ended 30 June and EBITDA of £3.3m. It was founded in 1978.

Brintons’ acquisition Brintons has bought the largest carpet and rug manufacturer in Poland for an undisclosed sum. Agnella produces about 2million sqm of carpets, runners and rugs a year, more than two-thirds of Polish carpet production, of which about half is exported. It produces both wool and synthetic products. ‘This acquisition further strengthens our commercial position in key European markets and enables us to expand the service we provide our customers across the globe. This is a great opportunity to increase our market share and consolidate our leading position,’ says Duccio Baldi, Brintons chief executive.

“We’ve been consistently impressed by how our stock management and deliveries have been handled, which is especially important when dealing with our home delivery customers. Andrew Porter Limited’s attention to detail, organisational forward planning and capacity means they are able to help us grow as our customer base does.”

Profits leap at Furniture Village Furniture Village has seen profits jump as it embarks on an expansion which Peter Harrison, Furniture Village chief executive, expects to give it ‘truly national coverage’. The 41-store chain saw EBITDA climb by 43% to £8m in the year to 29 March. This year’s accounts have yet to be filed at Companies House, but pretax profits are expected to double 2014’s £1.9m. Like for like sales increased by 6% and average sales values rose by £100 to £1,500, according to the company. The August Bank Holiday saw the opening of the company’s 41st branch, at Enfield, which will be followed by Northampton as it looks

to open 20 more stores in the next five years. Terms have been agreed on several locations and the chain says there is little risk of cannibalising sales at existing branches. ‘We are pleased to report that the trading momentum achieved over the past couple of years has continued into the new financial year. We remain very excited about our plans for the future as we expand the business to achieve a truly national coverage, and benefit from considerable growth opportunities, both online and in stores,’ says Harrison. It has invested £800,000 in a new website that is set to be launched shortly.

Dreams’ eight year mattress plan

10

Bed chain Dreams is to looking to encourage consumers to cut by a third how long they keep a mattress. It is investing £4m in its Replace Every Eight advertising campaign, wanting shoppers to buy a new mattress every eight years, rather than 12. It says there are 8million mattresses in the UK that need replacing. The move comes as it accelerates its store opening plans, with 30 new stores in the next year. Five will be in the North

East of England after July’s Stockton opening saw it enter the region for the first time. It had only planned 20 stores. ‘In addition to the new stores in the North East, and as part of a significant expansion programme, we plan to open 30 additional shops around the UK within the next 12 months, following recent trials of stores in 6,000sqft to 8,000sqft format, which have proven to be highly successful,’ says Jeremy Gerken, Dreams retail operations director.

ScS improves

B&S sales rise

ScS has reassured shareholders it will pay £5.6m in dividends after orders improved. In May it warned investors orders were 15.9% lower in the four weeks to 2 May. Performance in the final quarter was better and like for like orders for the six months to 25 July were 1.4% higher. Like for like sales for the full year rose 5%. Meanwhile, the chain has begun an external search to find a replacement for Ron Turnbull, chief financial officer, who is set to leave after 11 years.

Barker & Stonehouse has seen profits more than double, climbing above £3m. The retailer saw sales rise from £45.6m to £54.26m in the year to 29 March 2015. Pre-tax profits were up from £1.541m to £3.21m. Gross margin increased from 46.2% to 46.9% ‘by focusing on the correct product and margin with ongoing attention to the company’s overheads,’ says the retailer. The company paid £182,000 of dividends, a rise of £50,000.

Robert Hawkins Robert Hawkins, Glasswells operations director, died on 13 August, aged 72. He dedicated his career to the retail and furnishing industries. He spent 12 years as central buyer for North East department store chain Binns, before moving on to be national non-food retail manager for the Co-op, which meant directing and controlling retail strategy throughout the UK. His next move was to become business development manager at Airsprung Group, during which time he became md of Duckers. In 2001 Hawkins became sales director at Glasswells, taking control of the retailing side of the business. ‘Robert was very highly thought of by everyone at the company, he was a very thorough and most excellent business manager. Robert set very high standards for himself and successfully engendered dedication, effort and loyalty from all who worked under his direction. His knowledge of shops, merchandise, buying, selling, promotions, and general business skills made him the consummate retail professional,’ says Paul Glasswell, Glasswells md. ‘His gregarious nature was well suited to a career where good, clear communications are essential. Robert was big hearted and cared deeply about doing things in the right way. He was a great man and we will all miss him,’ he adds. Hawkins’ passion away from retail was horse racing, owning and co-owning horses. He is survived by his wife, Joan, their children, Mark and Samantha, and grandchildren.

Headlam’s summer sales up Headlam has seen UK residential sales climb by 5% in the first six months of the year, with growth continuing into the summer. The flooring group saw UK sales increase from £257.8m to £274.6m in the six months to 30 June. Commercial sales were up 6.1%, lifted by ‘renewed confidence in the wider business community with the refurbishment of existing premises or the opening of new commercial premises’. Grey was a major influence on carpet sales: of the new bestselling carpet products launched during the first half of 2015, grey accounted for about 40% of the content of each range in the middle to higher price points. Pre-tax profit increased from £10.75m to £12.34m. The

group is raising its interim dividend by 15% to 6p a share. ‘The first half results underline the growing momentum in the UK market and particularly in our business. The group’s UK residential business has performed well and the slightly stronger like-for-like growth across our commercial activities points towards improving confidence in the wider business community,’ says Tony Brewer, Headlam chief executive. ‘The positive trading outcome for the first half has continued during the first eight weeks of the second half. Subject to the important final quarter of the year, the group expects to announce results for the full year to 31 December slightly ahead of the board’s internal expectations.’

£2m expansion for Lukehurst Made.com makes TV debut

Martin Lukehurst at the new store

Furniture and flooring retailer Lukehurst is poised to move to larger premises and launch a transactional website in a £2m expansion. The family-owned company, which already has a flagship store in Rainham, Kent, will move to a 14,000sqft unit in Sittingbourne near to its present store at the end of September or the start of October. It will launch its website at the same time. The 45 year-old company has bought the freehold to the former toy store in Mill Way, Sittingbourne – which was to be a Tesco supermarket until the chain cut its expansion plans. It is a third larger than the present site, and will display a wider range of products by brands such as Ercol, G Plan and Parker Knoll. Separate galleries will be devoted to Stressless and Alexander James. ‘This is the next generation Lukehurst,’ says Kathryn Lukehurst, Lukehurst joint

md. Housing and retail outlets close to the new showroom are planned. ‘This will put us at the hub of a thriving new shopping and residential community.’ Martin Lukehurst, Lukehurst joint md, says the larger store and transactional website would give an essential combination of clicks and mortar. ‘We are always looking to reinvest and move forward. With all the development that’s taking place in Sittingbourne, we are determined to continue to play a major part in the area,’ he says. ‘This opportunity was too good to miss. We’re a traditional company and believe customers like to come and see the products. But ecommerce is an important part of today’s retail scene and we want to offer that service.’ The company employs 30 people in Rainham and Sittingbourne where it also has a warehouse and distribution division. The new store is expected to lead to the creation of three jobs.

Online retailer Made.com has released its first advertising campaign since hiring a number of agencies to unify its brand. It has invested more than £4m into its first Europe-wide integrated campaign. The lead 30 second TV advertisement will run on ITV, Sky and Channel 4 until January. The TV advertisement features furnishings against pastel-coloured backdrops and a soft electronic soundtrack ending with the slogan ‘Made.com Made. You Look’. ‘Growing the brand is our priority and adding TV to the campaign gives us the chance to stand out in the sector with support from some of the best agency talent – who provide us with a fresh perspective,’ says Annabel Kilner Made.com UK country manager. Meanwhile, the retailer will open its third showroom this month. The 4,000sqft showroom in Liverpool’s Metquarter shopping centre, will open in mid-September and serve the North West of England. It already has showrooms in London and Leeds. ‘The new site allows us to do this – it’s a cost-effective partnership with the centre, meaning there are no big high street costs. We receive approximately 700,000 website visits from Liverpool and the surrounding area per year, so Metquarter is a good opportunity for us in the area,’ says Kilner.

Consumer rights New legislation has some significant changes The Consumer Rights Act 2015 comes into effect on 1 October and brings together a number of different pieces of consumer law (including the Sale of Goods Act 1979, the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 and the Unfair Contract terms Act 1977) into one. So, most of us should be familiar with what it says, but there are some significant changes. What remains unchanged? All products sold must be of satisfactory quality, fit for their purpose and matching the description and any claims made about them, even verbally and online. The products must be safe, durable and free from minor defects. If a product doesn’t meet these basic (and inescapable) requirements a consumer is entitled to a refund, repair or replacement.

But there’s been a lot of debate about when a customer is entitled to a refund or a repair and the new Act sets out clear timescales not only for this, but also for delivery and refunds. It also makes installation (when provided by the trader) part of the product and not a separate issue. The key changes that furnishings retailers should be aware of include: G Delivery should be within 30 days unless you agree something different with the customer when they place their order. G The customer has 30 days from the date of delivery or collection to reject faulty goods and have a refund. G After 30 days the customer has the right to a repair or replacement of faulty goods (at their discretion). If the repaired or replaced goods are still faulty the

If the installation is not satisfactory, the customer can reject the goods

22

Interiors Monthly September 2015

customer then has a ‘final right to reject the goods’ and so becomes entitled to a refund. G Repairs or replacements must be done ‘without significant inconvenience’ to the customer and at the trader’s cost however long the repair/replacement takes. G After six months refunds can be reduced to take into account the time the customer has had to use the goods. G The 30 day/six month time periods are extended by however long a customer has to wait for a repair or replacement. G Refunds must be given to the customer within 14 days. G Installation is not a separate service, it’s part of the goods: if the installation is not satisfactory the customer can reject the goods.

This year has seen a huge expansion of Gallery Direct’s offer with more than 350 lines being introduced across all five brands in January, to offer an even better one-stop-shop for its customers. Accessories launched at the beginning of this year included more high quality soft furnishings, designed to add the perfect finishing touch to homes, along with a range of diverse, individually designed mirrors. ‘We are delighted to have won the Best Accessory Supplier award again this year,’ says Peter Delaney, Gallery Direct md. ‘Our design team worked incredibly hard to develop this exciting product range. It is fantastic that this has been recognised by Interiors Monthly readers and I would like to

thank everyone who voted for us. ‘However, our work doesn’t stop there. To offer even more choice to our customers, we decided to have a second major product launch at the Autumn Fair where we will be promoting more than 160 new items, including a wide range of accessories.’ Featuring both functional and decorative products, the latest accessories offer a diverse range of coordinating items that will enable customers to get the complete look. ‘From striking ornate candle holders to charming wall hooks, and from rustic lanterns to luxurious crushed velvet cushions, the choice is varied and exciting,’ adds Delaney. Matt O’Flynn, Collins and Hayes md, shocked visitors to the January Furniture Show when he presented a dozen sofas that were as unCollins and Hayes as you could imagine. Until they checked, many visitors thought they had walked on to the wrong stand. This was O’Flynn’s first salvo in his efforts to get retailers to take a fresh look at the upholstery manufacturer, best known for its well-established traditional designs. O’Flynn says he has two main objectives: improving the quality of the product and improvement in service. ‘We are a bespoke manufacturer so we should be offering genuine choice, rather than a set range chasing volume,’ he explains. And part of what he calls ‘the restorative process’ is to improve margins so the company can progress and invest. However this can be difficult ‘given that some retailers have been used to selling a certain product at a certain price.’ He admits that some retailers haven’t understood what he’s trying to do with the new products, while carrying on selling existing models, but new stockists have been gained. ‘We’ve had new stockists who have taken new

Noble virtues enhanced Balta Broadloom has reworked one of its classic ranges ‘There is no doubt that since we launched the original Noble Saxony collection as one of the first stain resistant qualities on UK shores in 2009, the market has changed dramatically and demand for these carpets is at an all-time high, so that’s why we’ve introduced the Noble Collection, reworking this classic range for a new generation of buyers,’ says Geert Vanden Bossche, Balta Broadloom marketing director. Building on the hugely successful foundation of the original Noble Saxony, which introduced the StainSafe polypropylene brand to UK homeowners, the Noble Collection is set to re-establish There are 12 shades and four stripes to choose from

the collection as the favourite among a new generation of homeowners that are seeing StainSafe carpets as a serious easy to look after alternative to wool-rich styles, says Vanden Bossche. ‘We decided that such has been the

popularity of the original Noble Saxony that its replacement should retain what made the collection so popular in the first place, namely style, quality and exceptional value.’ The bleach cleanability of the collection remains, but durability and resilience has been improved with the two-ply StainSafe yarn. The use of twoply yarns is becoming more widespread as brands look to combat some of the flattening and dirtying issues often associated with polypropylene fibres. ‘Using StainSafe is a natural addition to the Noble Collection, helping to make the collection competitive with the best

stain-resistant styles available. The 38oz pile weight affords excellent durability, making the Noble Collection ideal for use right throughout the home, while ensuring the carpet remains exceptional value,’ adds Vanden Bossche. Despite the under the hood improvements to the yarn, homeowners are most likely to notice the collection’s visual changes, where Balta Broadloom has given the colour palette an extensive reworking as well as introducing a matching stripe in four different tonal combinations. A total of 12 plain shades will see most styles of homes accommodated: from rich red and blues often preferred by older purchasers to on-trend greys and a range of neutrals. ‘We felt it incredibly important to ensure that Noble Collection remembered the success of Noble Saxony was its appeal to a wide customer base, it really did suit the majority of people looking for a classic saxony carpet for their home thanks to its excellent colour palette and ability to be used throughout the home. We’ve continued this winning formula, but also made sure that the collection captures the imagination of style-conscious homeowners with the introduction of a coordinated stripe that’s great for use as

a perfectly matching feature carpet in halls or on stairs,’ explains Vanden Bossche. The impact of the coordinated stripe is also matched by the collection’s in-store presence, with Balta Broadloom introducing a new lectern for the range, including a unique identity separated

from Balta’s standard product lines, a decision brought about by the longstanding success of the Noble Saxony collection. Such is the strength of reputation of the Noble name, Europe’s largest carpet manufacturer has centred on this with its new POS introducing a striking gold logo and black background, while capitalising on its heritage with ‘The Original is Always the Best’ motto. Photography too stands out from crowd, inspired by the opulence of pre-revolution France and Regency living. ‘The result is a collection that really stands out in-store and gives significant weight to the 12 plain and four coordinated stripe options. Noble Collection truly is a modern classic. A style that offers broad ranging and lasting appeal combined with confidence-inspiring StainSafe performance, a quality that delivers usability throughout the home and at a price that’s kind to the pocket, it’s easy to see why,’ adds Vanden Bossche. The collection is available in 4m and 5m widths and 4m for the stripes. It has 10-year wear and 15-year stain warranties. Balta Broadloom, tel: 00 32 5662 2211

Rustic artistry Karndean Designflooring has expanded one of its established ranges Karndean Designflooring is highlighting its recently expanded Da Vinci collection. Popular for its narrow wood-effect planks, deep bevel and smooth finish, it has 12 modern rustic designs. Heavily influenced by the trend towards reclaimed and repurposed materials in the home, the 915mm x 76mm distressed look planks replicate the unique look that comes from the transformation of wood over time. The 12 new planks are divided into two groups – the first group is made up of four modern limed planks and three classic oak looks, with the second group featuring three burnt and smoked designs alongside two worn, aged driftwood looks. Inspired by natural fibres and textiles

44

Interiors Monthly September 2015

the soft muted tones of the four limed oak designs are enhanced with a limewashed finish, accentuating the grain details of each plank. The classic oak planks, in three shades of light to mid-brown oak, offer a more traditional and clean-lined style. With striking colour variation from plank to plank, the two new acacia designs and Scorched Oak replicate the look of burnt oak. While the acacia designs feature gentle variation, Scorched Oak is a statement floor with its almost tiger-like grain and colour variation. The Coastal Driftwood and Beach Driftwood designs in this group mimic the gentle, sea salt worn features of reclaimed driftwood. The combination of

saltwater, high winds and shipworms means that the natural tannins and nutrients are mostly drained from the wood before it’s found on shore as a partially decomposed driftwood full of unique character. With an option of two soft grey-brown tones, these distinctive rustic designs give customers the natural look of reclaimed timber without the practical drawbacks of real wood such as cracking, splintering or warping. The narrow line planks allow even the smallest of spaces to be enhanced and to create an impact in larger areas. The additions mean Da Vinci now features 20 wood and seven stone designs. Moods

Diversification TCS is offering carpets and beds to retailers When it comes to serving independent retailers, TCS has always taken pride in taking the lead in providing new services and revenue streams to its customers. And this year sees the company making its debut at The Flooring Show with its carpet and flooring division, TCS The Carpet Specialists, alongside its established beds offer. The team at TCS The Carpet Specialists has sourced in the UK and the rest of Europe 12 carpet ranges, each having 10 designs and colour choices. With a mix of textures, materials and patterns, they are all chosen and designed based on current market trends. Everything has been designed around the independent retailer where carpet can be supplied by the roll or as individual cut lengths, so warehousing and large stock is no longer required. As well as the product offerings, TCS has designed the studios to be as spacesaving as possible, with straight wall ladder or corner displays to suit the floorspaces of flooring and furniture retailers. TCS has also introduced further space saving displays with its carousel stands,

46

Opulance

Interiors Monthly September 2015

each allowing retailers to display up to 10 carpets on as small a footprint as possible. These can be displayed standalone or alongside the wall displays, giving retailers the optimum top-selling lines with the minimum of floorspace. After previewing the offer in January, TCS has placed many of the carpet concept studios in retailers throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland. ‘Along with serving existing flooring retailers with these new offerings, we wanted to help these retailers improve on their bottom line. Seeing how the larger multiples were reacting to the market, we see an opportunity to offer beds within a flooring environment,’ says Thomas Small, TCS md. ‘With the flooring and furniture industries looking to diversify into other revenue streams and furniture retailers looking for ways to widen their product offerings, TCS is in the process of helping both these sectors with their offerings. With multiples such as Carpetright now selling beds, we are offering carpet retailers the opportunity to offer beds within their stores.’ TCS is offering in-store studios with its

range of Royal Coil mattresses and beds to carpet and flooring retailers, which take up the minimum of square footage requirements. Also, with the award winning logistics and service that TCS offers and its direct home delivery service, flooring retailers do not need to have large warehousing and delivery services to get the TCS beds to their customers homes. ‘Once an order has been placed with TCS, we take over and ensure that the new bed is delivered to your customer by a professional team of installers, with little to no disruption to your core business. To help carpet and flooring retailers understand how this will work for them, for the first time ever The Flooring Show will be bringing beds to Harrogate this year,’ explains Small. ‘So whether you are a furniture retailer looking to introduce carpets within your store, or a carpet and flooring retailer looking to compete with the multiples with bed and further carpet offerings, TCS will be the solution for you,’ he adds. TCS The Carpet Specialists has recruited three key personnel providing the backbone of the company, who have more than 80 years combined experience of carpet and flooring retailing. Chris Melling joined the newly formed carpet division of TCS in September 2014 as general manager, charged with the set up and smooth running of the new venture, located in Heysham, Lancashire. Having successfully been md twice before in his career he saw this as an opportunity too good to miss. Roger Seddon has been in the carpet industry for more than 25 years and joined as operations manager. He began his flooring career in 1998 as a sales office manager, progressing to transport manager as his employer’s fleet of six vehicles increased to 18 with an outstanding delivery service. Further career advancement saw him become operations manager looking after transport, warehouse and production. Craig Melling, sales manager, gained valuable experience in all aspects of the trade from warehouse work to operating cutting machines to driving forklifts as he worked through the ranks in his formative years. He moved on to the sales office, then merchandiser, before becoming sales representative for the North of England.

mission

Silentnight offers beds for all the family

Silentnight is determined to make sure everyone has a great night’s sleep With more than 60 years of bed-making experience, Silentnight has made it a mission to help everyone across the UK get a great night’s sleep. Silentnight offers sleep solutions for all the family: from its Safe Nights cot bed with mattresses incorporating Airstream technology to its innovative Miraform technology, there is a product in the range for everyone. ‘With Silentnight’s foam free cot bed mattresses babies and toddlers can get a safe and comfortable night’s sleep while they grow. The new foam free mattresses feature Airstream i-fibre or memory wool which is safer for babies, and the innovative hi-tech 3D mesh microquilted cover allows a free flow of air so babies can breathe freely through the material for a safer night’s sleep. The mini-pocket spring system in the top two products in the range offers great

support and comfort and the removable and washable cover makes it easy to clean,’ says Nick Booth, Silentnight marketing director. ‘There is also a range of bunkbed mattresses on offer along with the Healthy Growth children’s beds which feature the Miracoil spring unit for ultimate support for growing bodies. With a selection of colour and a choice of storage options, this is the perfect bed for children wanting to add style into their bedroom’, says Grace Moorhouse, Silentnight brand marketing manager. The Mattress-Now range from Silentnight offers a collection of foam and memory foam mattresses to meet individual comfort needs. The 3 Zone mattress from the range has been voted by Which? as the best memory foam mattress since 2012 and was awarded a Best Buy status, with scores given for

performance, durability and usability. Silentnight’s Miracoil and Mirapocket mattresses offer the consumer a choice of comfort options and a selection of fillings, from latex to natural lambswool, there is a product for everyone. ‘The innovative Miraform collection combines a spring-free ergonomically designed base with a choice of comfort fillings for the most technically advanced mattress around,’ says Booth. ‘Once the ideal mattress has been chosen, there is a great range of stylish base, headboard and colour options to fit in with individual lifestyle needs. For people struggling for storage in the bedroom, an ottoman base offers a discreet storage solution while the adjustable base option in the Geltex range offers sleep personalisation,’ adds Moorhouse. The campaign uses Press advertisements, online videos and posters

Achievements Campaign to encourage a good night’s sleep Silentnight launched a marketing campaign in April focusing on the ultimate benefits of quality sleep – waking bright, feeling refreshed and being ready to achieve. With over 60 years’ experience of producing beds and bedding products for the whole family, Silentnight knows what can be gained from a great night’s sleep and is using its Achievements campaign to communicate these benefits through advertising, social media and PR. The bed manufacturer signed athlete Jo Pavey to front its PR activity with involvement in press days and social media initiatives. Juggling a successful running career with a family, the British long distance runner won the 10,000m at the 2014 European Championships, at the age of 41, just 11 months after giving birth to her second child. ‘If you want to achieve, you can give yourself a real head start by getting a good night’s sleep. Sleep is vital to the

60

Interiors Monthly September 2015

whole family’s health and wellbeing and through our Achievements campaign we hope to communicate what it can lead to, whether that’s scoring the winning goal in a football match or simply having the verve and energy to accomplish great things in general,’ says Nick Booth, Silentnight marketing director. ‘We’re delighted to be working with Jo Pavey on Achievements: she’s an absolute inspiration and her successes are a great example to us all of what can be done when you have enough energy and focus to set your mind to it.’ Pavey, who was third in last year’s BBC Sports Personality Of The Year says: ‘The Achievements campaign is something I can relate to personally. As an athlete and a mum, sleep is fundamental to my success, whether that be getting up very early with the children or training hard for my next big competition – I couldn’t do any of this without a good night’s sleep.’ The campaign covers national

newspapers, home interest magazines, posters, video on-demand and online. The campaign began with advertisements in The Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail, The Guardian and Daily Express in May and June, with others scheduled for October and November. Home interest titles are being used each month until the end of the year, including Prima, Good Housekeeping, Good Homes, Woman & Home and Your Home. A 30-second advert was shown on video on-demand channels such as 4OD during May and June, before returning from September to November. A section of the company’s website under the theme of Sleep for Success gives consumers the background to the campaign, information about the partnership with Pavey as well as a daily blog with Silentnight achievers, sleep tips and a competition. Visit: www.silentnight.co.uk/sleep-forsuccess

BEDS AND BEDROOM

Behind the scenes Grace Moorhouse, Silentnight brand marketing manager explains how the Achievements campaign was developed ‘The inspiration began when the company started looking for a strong brand campaign to drive the importance of a great night’s sleep and support our quality sleep solutions for all the family proposition as well as our position for being the UK’s leading sleep expert. We have focused on the ultimate benefit of a great night’s sleep, which is a great day ahead. The campaign acknowledges the many things that everyday families can achieve. The inspiring photography reflects day-to-day living with a sense of fun and energy while celebrating family achievements,’ says Grace Moorhouse, Silentnight brand marketing manager. She says the development of the campaign was very much a team effort. ‘Myself and Nick Booth, Silentnight marketing director, worked with The Market Creative on the campaign direction with several themes being presented on how we could position the importance of sleep and link this back to Silentnight. We settled on the Achievements route and quickly started developing the creative and key messages for the campaign. ‘To ensure we got the right family feel for the campaign we commissioned a photoshoot, using acclaimed Manchester-based photographer John Shard. I helped to select the models and was on hand on the hectic two-day shoot,’ she says.

It was also important that the campaign was fully integrated across all channels including PR and the brand website. ‘Working closely with our PR agency Smoking Gun and our digital team in Manchester, we ensured the launch event with Jo Pavey and Sleep for Success pages on the website were consistent with the rest of the campaign. ‘Jo is a fantastic example of how goals can be achieved and exceeded, no matter what the circumstances. She fits perfectly with our target audience of mums and is an inspiration with what she has achieved in both her personal and professional life. Juggling a successful running career with a young family,’ explains Moorhouse. Being an athlete and a mother Pavey says she can relate to Achievements

and that ‘sleep is fundamental to my success’. ‘The importance of sleep for health and wellbeing is becoming ever popular across the industry and is something that you can definitely relate to if you’ve experienced a bad night’s sleep. This is a great message for our retailers to use across Silentnight products and can only be beneficial for them to reinforce why you should consider buying a new bed,’ says Moorhouse. ‘The campaign messaging, imagery, videos of Jo and sleep advice from Dr Nerina are all available to use and some retailers have already started to adopt the refreshed imagery and our proposition “Quality sleep solutions for all the family” in their communications.’ Visit: www.silentnight.co.uk/sleepmatters/sleep-for-success/

Jo Pavey met up with staff and presented the Achievements award Silentnight employees were inspired after athlete Jo Pavey visited its Barnoldswick site to reward staff who have gone above and beyond at work. The British long distance runner’s visit was part of Silentnight’s Achievements campaign highlighting the importance of a great night’s sleep. Pavey gave a speech about her experiences, took a tour of the factory, met staff and presented the winners of the internal Achievements award. Members of the Silentnight team were nominated by fellow employees for having achieved something great at work or at home. From doing the Three Peak Challenge for charity to being a volunteer blood biker, both Pavey and

the senior team at Silentnight were hugely impressed with the efforts. Employees were also treated to a sleep clinic with Silentnight sleep expert Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, who made a presentation on how to sleep better, and gave employees one-to-one sessions. Juggling a successful running career with a young family, Pavey has taken part in four Olympics and won the 10,000m at the 2014 European Championships, at the age of 41, just 11 months after giving birth to her second child. She is the oldest woman ever to claim gold at a European Championships and in June 2015, she was awarded an MBE by the Queen for her services to athletics.

‘I’ve really enjoyed meeting the team here at Silentnight. Getting to know the employees and seeing how hard they work has been really inspiring. The role they play in ensuring Silentnight continues to be a thriving business is crucial and I’m thrilled to come and reward them for their achievements,’ says Pavey. Steve Freeman, Silentnight Group md, says: ‘Jo Pavey was the obvious choice for the ambassador of our Achievements campaign. It was fantastic to bring her to Barnoldswick to get everyone at the head office involved, and reward our team’s achievements internally.’ Visit: www.silentnight.co.uk/sleepmatters/sleep-for-success/

Keep on running Long distance runner Jo Pavey talks about dreams, nerves, quality time and the benefits of a good night’s sleep

Jo Pavey, the public face of Silentnight’s Achievements marketing campaign answered questions from the bed manufacturer’s Facebook and Twitter communities.

Q Have your ever had a dream which has inspired you to do or achieve something? If so, what was the dream and what did it inspire you to do? A When I was younger, I used to dream about cross-country running but got stuck in the mud: it must have been a yearning to do well and succeed.

Q When you achieve something, how do you celebrate? Air punch, high five or a little dance? A This varies depending on where we are in the season. If it’s at the end of the season though, when all my races are finished, a nice meal out with the family is my favourite way to celebrate.

Q Have you ever had an injury or another setback that has made you want to give up as a professional athlete? How did you overcome it? A I’ve had injuries and thought ‘that might be the end of my career’ but being determined I have always found a way to get back.

Q What is your proudest moment as

Q How do you balance everything and combat being tired?

A A good night’s sleep is key to being ready to handle anything. If I am well rested, I find it much easier to balance everything I need to do in the day. If I feel overly tired then I will factor time into my day to rest.

Q Does your mind ever wander when you’re running? If so, what do you usually think about? A Often, I think about nothing – it’s an opportunity for me to clear my head, relax and put things into perspective. Visit: www.silentnight.co.uk/sleepmatters/sleep-for-success/

Batting for the county The manufacturer has strengthened its ties with its local county cricket club Silentnight is one of Lancashire County Cricket Club’s key corporate sponsors for the 2015 season after upgrading its sponsorship package. As part of the partnership, LCCC will see members of its playing squad receive expert sleep advice at a Sleep Clinic run by Silentnight’s sleep expert Dr Nerina Ramlakhan. ‘We are extremely proud of our Lancashire roots and therefore delighted to lend our support to such an elite team as Lancashire County Cricket Club,’ says Nick Booth, Silentnight marketing director. ‘The partnership fits perfectly with our current Achievements campaign which looks to highlight what can be achieved after a great night’s sleep. We know sleep plays a crucial role in any athlete’s performance and so our resident sleep expert, Dr Ramlakhan, is working closely with the players to see how we can help them get a great night’s sleep, and hopefully get promoted at the end of the season.’ Warren Hegg, LCCC business

development manager, says: ‘As a former player, I know only too well the benefits of sleep and how it can positively affect performance. Therefore, I am delighted that we are continuing our partnership with Silentnight.’ As part of the sponsorship, fans were offered ‘The Best Seat in the House’ at the NatWest Blast T20 match between Lancashire Lightning and Notts Outlaws in July in a competition with XFM. Ashley Metcalfe, British Weight Lifting ceo, says: ‘The lifestyle and health of our team is fundamental to both their training and success and this includes their sleep. BEDS AND BEDROOM Air is the third Basket bed

Taking to the air Bonaldo has expanded its bed offer In 2013 Bonaldo introduced the Basket bed, given its name thanks to its enveloping headboard. This was followed last year with the pleated Plus headboard, and this year Mauro Lipparini has added to his designs with Air, featuring painted metal feet to give it a feeling of lightness. The feet are available in white, anthracite grey, dove-grey, amaranth, black or silver. Lipparini has also created the Cuff bed for Bonaldo. ‘The Cuff bed expresses its strong personality in the tailoring details: from the frog fastenings that adorn the two flaps which cover the padded headboard, to the pleating that marks the vertical pattern of the back panel cover,’ he says. Cuff’s headboard can come with leather or fabric covers, with visible leather inserts both on the headboard and on the bed surround, while the feet are made of painted metal, in white, anthracite grey, dove-grey, amaranth, black or silver. Young values Airpsrung is bringing new ideas to the children’s market

The new Young Airsprung concept

‘This year’s show will see Airsprung Beds continue to provide exciting and innovative solutions for retailers. It will be a showcase for fresh childrens’ ideas, bringing excitement and flair to a relatively predictable market. In addition, we’ll also be demonstrating our innovative ottoman storage solution – a major first in the industry. There will also be some fresh ideas around natural fillings, fabrics and finishing details that so often make a product successful,’ says Shaun Davies, Airsprung Beds trade sector manager. ‘As a benchmark brand for value, Airsprung believes that value does not mean utilitarian – many new and refreshing ideas have been created over the past few years and the growth in retailers adopting the Airsprung brand are testament to the fact that they are a manufacturer that listens to its retailers and, in turn, their consumers,’ he says. The company has matured in the online market and now provides complete turnkey services for its online retailer base. The products themselves are only the beginning of the journey, with a comprehensive direct home delivery network and add-ons such as Collect and Recycle.

74

Interiors Monthly September 2015

Expanding on this successful formula, premium brand Hush from Airsprung was launched two years ago, focused more on premium fillings and fabrics. It was also designed to maximise the potential of each mattress and provide a premium product with high specifications and value. ‘This created a much wider offer that was designed to attract retailers with a more demanding remit. To date, this has been a huge success and that success has

The new Airsprung ottoman

led to greater demand for private label products,’ says Davies. ‘The largest retailers in the UK now rely on Airsprung to design and produce their flagship models, be they divans, mattresses, headboards or ottomans. With Airsprung consistently delivering on price, quality and service, it’s no wonder that more retailers than ever before are trusting Airsprung to deliver for them, and to their customers,’ he adds. Natural success Dunlopillo’s Signature Collection is going from strength to strength ‘The Dunlopillo brand is riding high on a crest of success following on from the launch of the Dunlopillo Signature Collection at The Bed Show last year. Support for the new collection has been phenomenal and continues to go from strength to strength proving that the consumer desires a breathable alternative to the plethora of memory foam products in the marketplace. Dunlopillo’s unique open cell structure is the key as it not only creates unrivalled levels of comfort and support, but it also delivers much needed airflow which is not present in the premium memory foam brands,’ says Paul Little, Steinhoff UK Beds sales director national accounts. All Dunlopillo mattresses are made using natural latex, derived from the sap of rubber trees that are grown in managed sustainable plantations. ‘The formulae for genuine Dunlopillo latex is a closely guarded secret: this unsurprising statement is the one that separates Dunlopillo latex from other

latex products, coupled with the fact that Dunlopillo is the only 100% latex mattress in the marketplace. Dunlopillo’s durability is unsurpassed and in fact no other mattress filling material performs as well as Dunlopillo latex under the same scientific test conditions,’ says David Wescomb, Steinhoff UK Beds sales director independents. ‘But it is not just the genuine open cell airflow and durability of Dunlopillo latex that makes it such a wonderful mattress material; it is also the naturally occurring anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties that are valued by the modern day consumer,’ he says. With nationwide distribution through independent retailers and national chains, the Dunlopillo brand has a firm position in the premium comfort end of the market. The range of six mattresses is complemented with a host of base options ranging from bed frames, pocket sprung divans and sophisticated

electrically adjustable bases. With more than 30 premium fabrics, five leg designs and seven headboard styles, the Signature Collection offers numerous options to create an individual bed. Dunlopillo has developed a range of flexible marketing materials that allow its beds to be displayed in a branded studio format designed to provide considered investment authority to both retail staff and consumers alike. ‘We know that online information plays a significant role in any important purchase decision process and as such we advise and encourage consumers to visit their local stockist to ensure they receive the correct advice when buying their Dunlopillo mattress. It is for this reason that we have invested significantly in a Dunlopillo training academy, where we hold regular training events to impart the Dunlopillo comfort message to brand ambassadors in every retailer,’ adds Little. Therma-Phase introductions. ThermaPhase combines high density viscoelastic with an infusion of unique phase-change gel crystals, which work constantly to absorb, store and release body heat to maintain the ideal sleep surface temperature of 30degC - 32deg C. To further enhance the range, the Therma-Phase Silhouette collection will be introduced. This range allows consumers to combine either a pocket sprung or all foam base mattress with a choice of Therma-Phase topper for a bespoke solution to their requirements. With pressure relief to the fore, Kaymed will feature the V85 range. Available as a solid block or on pocket springs, V85 is a superior grade viscoelastic approved for and used in medical applications.

V85’s high density offers a combination of support and pressure relief regardless of temperature. While some materials require heat to function, making them susceptible to environmental conditions, V85 remains consistent throughout the year. The Kaymed Mighty Bed, the bed designed to be ultra-durable with a long-term performance, will also be on display. This range has proved enormously successful since its introduction and Kaymed says it is now the UK’s market leading firmer feel premium brand. Mighty Bed has a reinforced spring system and extra-strong divan base giving it a durability level reflected in its 15-year warranty. Visit: www.kaymed.co.uk

Winning game Mammoth’s mattresses continue to attract sportsmen and women Phillip Dollman

Britain’s sporting elite are proving a catalyst for innovation in the bed industry. According to John Tuton, Mammoth Technologies’ founder, developing products that meet the stringent training requirements of professional athletes benefits consumers through innovative mattress technology that aids sleep. ‘Sleep is an essential ingredient of any athlete’s training regime and by working to meet the demanding needs of elite athletes at the top of their game, we are pushing the boundaries of sleep technology,’ he says. Made from advanced medical grade foam exclusive to Mammoth, the mattresses are clinically proven by Northumbria University Centre for Sleep Research to help sleep. Accredited to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, Newcastle University’s Institute of Biosciences, the British Athletes Commission, English, Welsh and Irish Rugby Players Associations and the UK Chiropractic Patients’ Association, Mammoth has helped several sporting

stars. These include olympic and world gold medal winner Greg Rutherford, paralympian Danny Nobbs, olympic weightlifter Zoe Smith and recently Exeter Chiefs rugby union player Phillip Dollman. Dollman, 30, understands how important sleep is for good health and recovery, which is why he upgraded to a Mammoth. It was being part of The Rugby Players Association – which Mammoth has an affiliation with – and positive word of mouth reports from other sporting professionals that encouraged him to buy a Mammoth. ‘My career is exciting, enjoyable yet very demanding – not just time-wise but on my body as well. Rest and recovery is an essential part of any sport conditioning and performance. We are encouraged to let the body and mind rest properly with the right amount of sleep and downtime whenever we are away from the rugby field,’ he says. ‘When it comes to my training regime, a lot is done via the rugby games and I’m typically at the gym three to four times a

week, so it’s quite intense for the body. My Mammoth mattress is helping massively with my quality and depth of sleep. Once I had sampled it, I knew it was going to have a positive impact on my lifestyle.’ Originally a sports and health product, Mammoth was quickly rolled out to the consumer thanks to high demand for its specialist mattresses. Now one of the fastest growing brands in beds and upholstery, its ranges can be found in national retail stores such as Furniture Village and AHF and some leading independents across the UK. ‘Mammoth will only launch a product when it has been tested and proven to help sleep or sit better, strengthening our brand story and giving our stockists the reassurance that they are selling high quality, credible products to their customers,’ says Tuton. At the show visitors can view the latest luxury range and high-spec bed base alongside its bestsellers including Pocket 1600, Pocket 2000 and Supersoft 22. Visit: www.mammothuk.com

Spring the changes Celebrating 65 years of the Sealy Posturepedic spring system This year is the 65th anniversary of the creation of Sealy’s Posturepedic spring system and its mattresses have come a long way since 1950, building on their Posturepedic heritage. To celebrate the Posturepedic landmark, there will be a Sealy Anniversary Collection at the show, along with an expanded Profile collection and the new Ottoman storage bed. ‘There couldn’t be a better way of proving that Sealy is still leading from the front in terms of innovative mattress development than by accumulating not one, but two Which? Best Buy accolades in this milestone year. And of course when one was for the highest scoring mattress of all, and being told “it was the best mattress we’ve tested in years” that really is the icing on the Posturepedic birthday cake,’ says Neil Robinson, Sealy marketing director. ‘We were thrilled to bits to retain the Best Buy Pocket Spring mattress accolade for the third year running, but to top the entire category and have the highest scoring mattress of all is the best

84

birthday present all the Sealy staff at the factory in Aspatria could receive. ‘If supporting your back is a key consideration, the highly praised Profile range, which launched at Telford in 2014 to huge interest, has been an enormous hit. So much so, there are now two new models in the range with either 1200 or 1400 pocket springs. The Profile Pocket will give the sleeper truly the best of all worlds – innovative spinal and neck

support and almost unbelievable comfort,’ he explains. With findings from the British Chiropractic Association that 48% of people say sleeping caused them neck or back pain, there is a need for people to get a properly supportive and comfortable bed, says Robinson. Directional and variable zoning along the length from head to toe means the Profile mattress doesn’t have to be

turned and it pays special attention to offering the right kind of support to the head, shoulders and hips, which are the key pressure points that cause tossing and turning at night. The key to the whole concept are two areas of increased support to ensure the neck and spine are kept at the right alignment throughout the night. When lying on a Profile bed, you can feel the slightly convex zone which sits laterally across the mattress and supports the spine, whether lying on your side or your back. ‘This bed is a boon to anyone who feels the need for more support as they sleep, or indeed anyone who occasionally or permanently suffers from back problems, or wishes to prevent one

from deteriorating,’ says Robinson. The less pronounced convex head area is designed so that only one good pillow is needed to support the head. This is a far better arrangement for the neck as it helps keep it better aligned with the spine and means you don’t wake up with back or neck ache in the morning. Knowing how storage space is at a premium in more and more homes, Sealy will introduce the new Sealy Ottoman at the exhibition. With a choice of mattress from the most popular Sealy ranges, the Ottoman hydraulics enable it to be lifted easily. There is easy access to all the space and one push sends the mattress back down with the bedding on top barely moved. Visit: www.sealy.co.uk

Making history Somnus will debut a mattress range with 30,000 springs Luxury bed manufacturer Somnus has made history by designing a mattress range with an unrivalled spring count of more than 30,000, a number previously unseen within the market. Established in 1840, Somnus is a world-leader in spring technology, and uses its own patented Sensa Intelligent pocket springs throughout its Supremacy range, which enables the company to create mattresses with an industry-leading spring count. Each spring within the pocket spring system responds independently to dissipate the sleeper’s weight and support the body. The company is committed to sustainable development, and uses natural, luxurious fillings throughout the

92

Supremacy range including new additions tree silk-cotton and alpaca wool, as well as long-stranded horsetail, silk, mohair and cashmere. Somnus has a 300acre farm in North Yorkshire where it rears its own sheep for its wool and grows natural fillings such as hemp and flax. Natural fillings like this offer beneficial properties for the user. Wool, for example, helps the body to maintain and regulate temperature while sleeping but is also inherently fire retardant. The homegrown fillings are used instead of the manmade materials typically found in some mattresses and beds, providing layer upon layer of environmentallyfriendly comfort and support.

The company’s approach to innovation and sustainability has been recognised with two Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in Innovation and Sustainable Development. In addition to the new Supremacy range, Somnus is also set to release a selection of fabrics and five design-led headboard styles. The popular Roma headboard will be revamped, with alternating coloured squares to create a design-focused statement for the bedroom. The latest range will be presented in the Somnus Studio Concept for retail partners to provide a modern sales environment and customer confidence. Visit: www.somnus.co.uk

94

Interiors Monthly September 2015

Sweet Dreams, focusing more than ever on own-manufactured beds, is to launch two top-end collections at The Bed Show: the Royal Pillowtop collection and the Enchanted beds range. With these new luxury divans the company has continued its move into high quality beds, established last September with the Pocket Air collection. The Royal Pillowtop collection comprises four models featuring pocket springs in the main part of the mattress and a pillowtop with its own mini-spring system. In the case of the top model, Sovereign, the main mattress contains 4,000 pocket springs and the pillowtop 2,000 mini-springs. The rationale behind the collection is clear: many customers appreciate the extra softness conferred by a pillowtop mattress yet also like plenty of support. The mini-spring system provides that. Customers also, of course, like to know that they’re sleeping on a superior bed with a spring count far in excess of the norm. The finishing is the quality customers would expect and luxurious fillings are used in the mattresses, offering a diverse choice including foam, latex and gel. Beds in the Royal Pillowtop collection, when bought as a divan, are offered with an upholstered headboard to match the base, supplied free for floor models, and the base will have the usual storage options including ottoman, half-ottoman and side-opening ottoman as well as drawers. The Enchanted Beds collection features beds with encapsulated springs: pocket or Sleepzone springs completely set within a foam frame. The extra support this provides to the edge of the bed will be welcomed by many sleepers who feel insecure on a traditional spring unit bed: there is a definite cessation of movement beneath at the bed’s edge and this can be reassuring. Most Enchanted beds feature fillings such as silk or latex and have removable,

The Bed Show Telford 22-23 September

dry-cleanable covers: a boon for those with allergies or who wish their mattress to stay pristine. As with the Royal Pillowtop collection, the divans are offered with fabric headboards to match the multi-storage option bases. Both collections will be sold to retailers complete with branded footmats and pillowcases for those purchased as showroom models. As well as new bed collections for adults, the company is also increasing the number of divans in its children’s collection with two new beds: Dolly and Striker. These are a step up from the current mid-market divans with both having good quality spring units and fillings as well as luxury knitted, childfocused patterned covers. Fabric upholstered bedframes have become a speciality for Sweet Dreams and the show will see four ownmanufactured additions. Two large drawers are an option to these models. Naomi, Winsome, Aura and Adventure are sprung slatted, come in three sizes and have boudoir-style finishes. None of the new divans will be available on any transactional website. The bedroom cabinet range this year sees the launch of seven ranges of readyassembled wooden furniture. Following the success of the Dawson range, three rubberwood models are planned for the exhibition with similar looks and manufacture. They include the Kramer that features concealed side cupboards to chests of drawers, providing extra shelving and hooks for jewellery and accessories. Dexter features concealed drawers to the chests of drawers, while Perry sports a two-tone finish. All three furniture ranges come with matching bedframes. Cutler is the umbrella name for a large range of ready-assembled chipboard furniture in four finishes: grey, white, black and mirrored, all with matching bedframes. Visit: www.sweetdreamsuk.com

Investment in UK manufacturing Sweet Dreams is taking advantage of its recent growth to focus on its ownmanufactured beds. The Burnley-based company invested in a £1m, 165,000sqft property earlier this summer, a former textile mill located a couple of miles away in Nelson. The intention is for this to become the focus of the manufacturing operation for Sweet Dreams’ upholstered bedframes as well as for sister company, upholstery manufacturer Comfort Zone Sofas. The original Primrose Mill will as a result have more space dedicated to the manufacture of divans and mattresses. A shift in focus away from imported furniture for upholstery makes obvious sense, given that sales of Sweet Dreams’ own manufactured beds have increased by a quarter to £17.1m in the year to March 2015. This has been achieved mainly by opening new accounts with national chains such as Next, Asda, Wayfair and Dunelm Mill and by a significant increase in business with AIS customers, now representing 5% of total bed sales.

Awarded in June, it is the second year running that the collection has impressed GHI’s panel of experts and passed its rigorous testing process. The GHI’s test report praised the range: ‘The Traditional Pocket Collection beds underwent real-life testing and were highly praised for being comfortable and luxurious.’ The Traditional Pocket Collection features beds and mattresses that

contain up to 2,800 individual pocket springs. The springs are complemented with deep layers of premium fillings. Customers can choose between latex, body moulding memory foam, or natural luxury wool, while all beds are expertly hand-crafted. The GHI has been testing, monitoring and recommending household products and campaigning on behalf of the consumer for 91 years. According to the company, the GHI logo is a rare thing, being a truly independent sign of a product’s ability to do what it promises.

Being GHI approved involves rigorous testing by its experts. Only products that pass its consumer quality assessment test can carry the coveted endorsement. Not everything passes the rigorous testing, which is why the GHI Approved logo is such a trustworthy sign to consumers. The Rest Assured Traditional Pocket collection was particularly praised for its affordability, five-year warranty, its UK manufacturing and the unrivalled comfort and support provided by the premium fillings used in the products. Don’t get caught napping There’s no time to rest as this year’s event has plenty to keep everyone occupied Adjustamatic will introduce a breathable mattress range, Air, comprising Air 20 and Air 25 models. The company started with pocket springs and combined these with foam that has hundreds of channels running through the foam from top to bottom. This was put in an encapsulated edge creating a mattress where body weight and movement creates an airflow through the mattress from top to bottom. Specialising in producing hand-made beds and mattresses with a made to measure service, Burgess Beds will introduce its latest bedstead collection, including Izzy, alongside its bespoke and organic mattresses. Fresh from winning three awards at Interzum, DesleeClama will highlight

lifestyle ideas and new technologies for better sleeping comfort within a full range of both woven and knitted fabrics, as well as ready-made covers. It was one of only nine companies to win a Best of the Best award at the show, for its Biaxial knitted mattress fabrics. Biaxial can stretch up to 50% in every direction, recovers from any kind of pressure and will revert to its original shape, even after several years of usage. The Ergonomie Institut in Munich tested its elasticity and concluded that Biaxial was particularly suited for ergonomic mattress systems with several body support zones to provide the best back support and pressure relief. It received a High Product Quality award for DoubleSided, its two-in-one

knitted fabric that can be used on both sides, making it possible to create two different mattresses with one fabric. Consumers can quickly change their sleeping environment by simply turning their DoubleSided mattress cover inside out. For example, it is possible to add refreshing moisture management to one side of a cover and warm Merino wool to the other, to adapt sleeping conditions to the seasons. DoubleSided is particularly useful for reversible accessories such as toppers and mattress covers. DesleeClama also won a second High Product Quality award for its Metamorphosis 3D fabric. Vancouver Expressions in Brick Lane and Downpipe with chrome handles

New beginnings Besp-Oak is to hold an At Home show Besp-Oak has reopened its refurbished six floor showroom in Coventry after the basement fire on 9 January that left the building heavily damaged by fire, smoke and water. Occurring just weeks before the January Furniture Show and the Spring Fair, Steve Mosley, Besp-Oak md, decided the fire was an opportunity to create a brighter, more modern showroom that would better reflect the diversity and quality of the company’s growing product offer. ‘I immediately decided I’d make a positive out of a negative and I’ve stuck with it,’ he says. To mark the reopening, Besp-Oak is to hold an At Home show on 5-9 October, from 9am-5.30pm. ‘Trade customers should really ask themselves if they are getting the best deal on their furniture and accessories as the UK’s most exclusive products are available to purchase at a fraction of recommended retail price. Our extensive offering includes more than 5,000 products well suited to furniture stores, garden centres, hotels, bars, restaurants, cafes, holiday homes, rental properties and villas,’ says Mosley. Indoor and outdoor furniture, accessories, lighting and giftware are just

For small volumes, customers receive wholesale prices or if buying in volume, they can receive factory direct prices by creating their own mixed container in 20ft, 40ft and 40ft High Cube sizes. For chairs and benches, English leather and a range of tartan fabrics are among the latest additions to this season’s offering, as well as a choice of interchangeable handles. ‘We have firmly established ourselves as the brand of choice for more than 500 retailers, interior designers and contractors worldwide and I cannot stress enough that there is no comparison when it comes to the build quality and value for money our products offer,’ adds Mosley. Hotel check-in Unilin Panels has finished its maiden commercial project using Evola Unilin Panels has completed its first commercial project featuring its revamped Evola collection. Dutch hotel and restaurant chain Van der Valk selected Evola for the refurbishment of its hotel in Akersloot, North Holland. Unilin updated Evola at Interzum in May by offering synchronous surface

textures on laminate: previously this could only be produced on melaminefaced board. Each design also has matching edge-banding. It also expanded the range of wood designs, introduced eight solid colours and a selection of metallic and concrete styles.

Van der Valk selected Heritage Oak Light for its Akersloot hotel

114

Interiors Monthly September 2015

‘The result is a sustainable, ecologically friendly, low maintenance and affordable product that can be installed quickly and easily for use in a diverse range of interior and furniture applications,’ says Jurgen Plas, Unilin Panels marketing manager. ‘Evola captures trends in interior decorating by paying attention to even the smallest details. The designs meticulously imitate every single feature of the original materials.’ Wardrobes, bedside tables, desks and coffee tables were created for Van der Valk from melamine-faced Evola panels. The laminate variant was also used for the tops of the coffee tables – a first for Unilin. ‘Van der Valk was instantly drawn to the natural-looking Heritage Oak Light design and the realistic surface textures of the panels. Of course, low maintenance was also an essential aspect in prompting the chain’s decision to incorporate the Evola collection into the hotel’s new furniture. Not only has this project put a big feather in our cap, but Van der Valk is also over the moon with the result,’ adds Plas. Visit: www.unilinpanels.com

Pole play Swish has added to its offering Hot on the heels of its cordless blinds, and Elements and Design Studio metal curtain pole launches earlier this year, Swish has added the Romantica collection of painted wooden poles and finials to its wide portfolio. ‘With a timeless appeal, this new collection is available in six stunning painted shades and with a choice of either decorative ball or graceful urn finials that work with the latest decorative schemes and elegant fabrics to give customers a truly luxurious look,’ says John Worth, Swish sales and marketing director. The Burnished Bronze and Pewter finishes give a bold, modern twist on a classic look. Antique White and Panna Cotta shades provide a muted feel that will complement a wide range of colour schemes. Pale grey April Cloud and Antique Silver finishes complete the collection while blending with the latest colour palettes. Romantica pole sets are 35mm in diameter with lengths from 1.5m to 3.6m. Each comes with the pole and chosen finial style plus matching wooden rings and wall brackets. For greater flexibility, the range also includes ring packs that can be purchased separately. Circular holdbacks are also available across all six of the finishes for draped curtains which can neatly frame the window. ‘Good quality painted poles are extremely desirable to customers looking for the muted, enduring and often luxurious finish which can be created. This latest Romantica range has been developed using a distinctive selection of colours to ensure retailers have the flexibility and scope to appeal to a wide customer base, especially where softer looking wooden poles are required,’ adds Worth. Winter warm up The show welcomes all retailers Now in its second year, The Autumn Furniture Show has been timed for retailers looking for pre-Christmas and winter sale ideas along with new products for 2016. More than 70 exhibitors are taking part across two halls of the Telford International Centre, covering all sectors of the furniture industry along with flooring. ‘The show is becoming an important

118

Interiors Monthly September 2015

event in the furniture industry’s calendar featuring the best the furniture industry has to offer and a one stop furniture event that will appeal to all furniture retailers,’ says Paul Riches, Minerva Furnishers Guild business development manager. This year’s event is open for all retailers on both days, unlike last year’s three-day show which had a Minerva and SMG members-only opening day.

‘Opening the show to the whole trade is the most significant change from last year’s format. The show this year has attracted some of the biggest names in the furniture industry including bed companies who would have exhibited at The Bed Show only a few weeks before. This is a huge endorsement for the show’s significance and importance,’ adds Riches. Visit: www.theautumnfurnitureshow.co.uk

Shining stars Westbridge’s highlights The Hudson and Cooper groups were Westbridge’s bestsellers at the show. ‘The beautiful buttoned model, Hudson, and its unbuttoned sister, Cooper, offer great value to customers. On-trend buttoning detail and great proportions with four sofa sizes and a large choice of fabrics, makes this a very versatile offering, with a fantastic luxurious but affordable feel,’ says Nichola Bell, Westbridge sales director. ‘Orion offers customers a unique storage and sofabed system,’ she says. It features a built-in sofabed and storage chaise along with standard sofa options, which is something regularly requested by customers for smaller homes. Westbridge introduced a two-fold sofabed option with a 10cm spring mattress to four of its models: Cole, Hadley, Theo and Alice. ‘These great value comfortable sofabeds are perfect for the pre-Christmas season,’ says Bell. Tee time for Flooring One On 7 July Flooring One held its inaugural golf day on the championship course at the Forest of Arden, Meriden with 37 golfers from the membership and flooring suppliers. Although tee-off wasn’t until 11.20am, players were arriving from 9.30am to be replenished from their journeys with breakfast rolls, tea, coffee and to renew old acquaintances. With registration complete, captain of the Flooring One members John Benson of Bensons Carpets outlined the order of the day, the foursomes, their teeing off times and all headed off for the locker room and out on to the putting green. Just on time at 11.17am the heavens opened with players speeding to retrieve their wet weather clothes and sheltering under the trees. Fortunately blue clouds weren’t far away and only a few minutes later tee-off, in a drizzle, began. The rest of the day apart from one other small shower was magnificent. Blue skies, superb natural setting, mirror-like lakes, ducks, swans and the sounds of competitive banter from the golfers: a swagger with every good drive and a cry

of despair when the ball hit the tree. By late afternoon ‘fatigued and dry’ the golfers arrived back at the golf club and adjourned to the 19th hole. Tales of success and disappointment were soon overwhelmed by that feeling of weary pleasure and tired achievement. The team winners were Flooring One with Edward Doe of John Doe Carpets and Furniture achieving the highest individual score for the members, closely followed by his father John who was runner-up. Edward also won the nearest to the pin award. Interfloor’s Anthony Dawson had the highest individual score for the suppliers. The longest drive award was won by Marc Helliwell of Axminster Carpets who was also the runner-up for the supplier’s team. The day was completed with an enjoyable evening meal after which John Benson and Glenn Harding presented the awards and Mike Dobson of Gaskell Wool Rich and Mr Tomkinson and captain of the suppliers, gave a speech in reply on behalf of the suppliers. A charity auction and raffle raised £710, for which Flooring One would like

Mike Dobson

to thank all present for such generosity. This was donated to the RNLI. As the evening concluded all agreed it had been a super day and they were already looking forward to next year. Visit: www.flooringone.co.uk
