EDITOR’S COMMENT
Andrew Kidd EDITOR
Show time again New products will be in abundance this month as the trade exhibition calendar gets back into full swing September is one of my favourite months as the autumn show calendar gets properly under way and manufacturers and suppliers look to persuade retailers that what they are offering will be the top sellers in the coming months. This month’s issue is dominated by exhibitions, with in-depth guides to both The Bed Show and The Flooring Show, as well as a look forward to Autumn Long Point. As the Prime Minister told us that the country will not stay in the EU ‘by the back door’ and there will be no second referendum to confirm the 23 June vote, it appears that consumers seem to be taking things in their stride. DFS and ScS both said shoppers have carried on buying – with the caveat that it’s

only been a relatively short period of time and things could of course change – and Headlam has been able to pass on higher prices created by exchange rates without an impact on sales. With items such as sofas and carpets being a relatively infrequent purchase this was likely to happen, but it may be different when large companies’ hedging periods expire and prices begin to rise across many products. August isn’t traditionally a great month for interiors sales, until retailers pile in with Bank Holiday offers, but it could be that this is no longer the case. John Lewis registered a double-digit increase in furniture sales at the end of August, just a week after bed sales rose by almost a third and footfall over the Bank Holiday weekend (Saturday and Sunday) was 10% less than had been forecast. It seems consumers preferred to go out in the evenings than shop in the sunshine. If you look at our website you’ll find details of 22 brave souls cycling from London to Bordeaux in aid of The Furniture Makers’ Company: the equivalent of riding from Birmingham to Liverpool every day for almost six days.

DFS, ScS and Headlam say Brexit has not hit spending DFS, ScS and Headlam have said consumer spending seems unaffected in the post-Brexit vote period. DFS says it recognises ‘that, following the EU referendum, retailing of furniture in the UK faces an increased risk of a market slowdown with additional cost pressures from foreign exchange movements, whilst it is likely that the retail environment will remain intensely competitive. The group’s trading since the referendum result has not indicated any weakening of demand, although the six weeks since 23 June is too short a period to permit a meaningful assessment of future furniture retail trends.’ The chain says sales for the year to 30 July were up 7%, as was its second half performance and that it expects to have a record year. ‘In light of second half trading, the board expects DFS to deliver a record performance for the full year with results towards the upper end of market expectations [sales of £746.9m to £755.5m and pre-tax profits of £60.7m to £64.6m],’ it says. Furniture and flooring retailer ScS has seen momentum continue since its 9 June trading update. According to its latest figures for the 53 weeks ended 30 July 2016, total like for like sales order intake increased by 14.8%. It has also announced the refinancing of its debt facilities, extending the maturity of its committed £12m bank facility to October 2018, and the facility has been renegotiated at a lower margin.
‘We are delighted that trading was strong throughout the EU referendum campaign and has continued since the vote with progress on a like for like basis in all retail categories,’ says David Knight, ScS ceo. Headlam, the country’s largest flooring supplier, says increasing prices after the country voted to leave the EU has had no impact on sales. ‘The referendum result gave rise to a weakening in sterling, and the group has sought to mitigate this adverse inflationary effect by implementing price increases earlier this month for residential floorcoverings imported from Continental Europe. It is pleasing that these price increases appear to have had no adverse impact on the level of residential revenues to date,’ says Tony Brewer, Headlam chief executive. ‘Our market appears to be robust and, subject to the key trading period in the run-up to Christmas, the board remains confident of achieving full-year expectations,’ he says. Brewer made his comments after revealing pre-tax profits rose by 22.4% to £15.1m in the six months to 30 June. Group turnover increased by 4.8% to £328.7m. UK like for like sales rose by 3.4%, boosted by Lifestyle Floors increasing sales by 34.8% to £21.1m. The group’s service centre network was increased to 32 with units in Bristol, Croydon and Hull, while a further three are in development.

likely recovery period is 12 months. In view of this Glenn has decided to concentrate on getting better. Glenn has been with the company for 17 years and has done an excellent job in driving Flooring One forward. He sends his thanks and best wishes to everyone’, says Flooring One.
Pre-tax profits at furniture and flooring retailer Housing Units jumped by 27.4% to £1.938m in the year to 27 March. The Failsworth, Manchester company, which celebrates its 70th anniversary next year, saw turnover rise by 7.7% to £24.518m. Staff numbers rose by 10 to 279, with the number of equivalent full-time employees climbing from 233 to 245. The company paid £1.5m in dividends, up from £800,000 last year. ‘Investments over recent years in both the business infrastructure and the recruitment of high quality management and staff result in the business being well placed to outperform the sector as a whole,’ says the directors’ report.
Show-offs
We admit it. We are showing off. We’re flaunting our enviable collection of carpet styles to their very best advantage and we want you to show them off too. Our star attraction is this magnificent wall display, designed to create the biggest impact your store has ever had. The system comprises eight linked wall panels, each comprising high-impact graphics sitting above attractive feeler swatches, topped by stylish integral lighting. Each unit measures 2.2m high by 76cm wide, adding up to a total width of 5.94m to create a comprehensive picture of the Associated Weavers offering. Because it’s modular, you can choose the precise number of panels you need (with a minimum of three), to make the most of your wall space. Then you can add to the effect with some beautifully constructed free-standing lectern and furniture display units. And if you want to make a bigger splash with your StainAway display, you could add some extra height with a branded totem.
A show-stopping display for your showroom
At Associated Weavers we have gone to great lengths to relaunch our best-selling ranges over the last few years. We’re always increasing and improving all our brands to give you the best in polyamide, polypropylene and wool yarn technology. This new merchandising programme gives an at-a-glance impression of our iSense, Invictus, StainAway and Natural Wool ranges. iSense is constructed from the softest, most resilient fibres to produce unique bounce-back qualities – no more dent marks from legs when you re-position furniture. Surprise, Suspense and Serenity are the big sellers of the moment. The latest range to be launched in the iSense collection is iSense Colours, Seduction Royale. Ask your area manager to view this product.

Boost for Laura Ashley Laura Ashley’s UK business enjoyed like for like sales increases in its four product categories and a double-digit online boost. Furniture Makers’ role: Lord Kirkham has become charity president of the furniture and flooring industry charity The Furniture Makers’ Company. The DFS founder, who is preparing to return to the sector with Fabb Sofas, takes over from Tony Attard, who has held the role since 2009. ‘I am absolutely delighted and honoured to have been invited by The Furniture Makers’ Company to take on the role of charity president to help promote craftsmanship, educate young people, assist those who have fallen on hard times, and work to preserve the past of our great industry and assure and safeguard the future,’ he says. ‘We have some ambitious plans and initiatives to encourage more young people to pursue a career in the furnishing industry, as well as support those who have worked within our ranks and require financial assistance,’ says Jonathan Hindle, FMC fundraising chairman. ‘Lord Kirkham’s expertise and influence will be an invaluable resource in supporting us to achieve our ambitions.’ Ben Burbidge, FMC master, adds: ‘I would like to thank Tony for the huge contribution he has made over the past seven years.’

In the year to 30 January, operating profits were up 26% to £8.3m as net sales rose by 10% to £137.5m. ‘The major driver behind our sales and profit achievement is our business vision which we developed and launched across our company – to be the home of the most trusted sleep brands,’ says Steve Freeman, Silentnight md.

Home in on respect Home visits may sound easy but a lot can go wrong Jim had been sent out on another customer visit. He wasn’t happy, but it seemed to have become part of his unwritten job description. He was running late. He’d been waylaid by a customer in the shop so he’d grabbed a tape measure and jumped in his car. Mrs B knew he was coming that morning and he hadn’t been specific about the time, so it probably didn’t matter that it was now lunchtime. He pulled up at the house. There were no parking spaces, so he pulled across the drive to avoid a long walk. He got out of the car and walked across the lawn to the front door. He knocked loudly. When Mrs B opened the door he walked straight through to the lounge to look at the… actually, it doesn’t matter what he was there to look at. By this time Jim had already added fuel to the customer’s complaint by failing to show courtesy and consideration in at least six different ways – did you spot them? His job was going to be much harder than it should have been. Carrying out a home visit is an important part of resolving complaints and the way it is done can make a huge difference to the way a customer feels

they have been treated. Here are some lessons I’ve learned from the mistakes I’ve made over many years. Make a specific appointment and arrive on time. If you’re running late, let the customer know. If you really want to impress, call the customer half an hour before your appointment to reassure them that you’re on your way. And, of course, make sure you have enough time to do the visit without appearing in a hurry to leave. Park thoughtfully. It doesn’t hurt to ask about parking when you make your appointment. Incidentally, I always park with my exit in mind, there’s nothing worse than having to do a three-point turn in front of the customer after a difficult visit. Take off your shoes or wear overshoes. Most customers leave their shoes by the door, so my laces are already undone when I knock. If you’re offered a cup of tea or coffee, accept it. A 10 minute visit with a cuppa seems a longer visit to a customer than an hour’s visit without one. Look professional. Your personal appearance and the kit you have with you will make an impression, so make

sure it’s a good one. Have the tools you need to find out what’s wrong and have them in a decent bag or box that looks the business. Listen to what the customer tells you. They will be more willing to accept your conclusions if they feel you’ve listened. Asking questions shows you’re listening, too. Take notes and photographs. That will help if you need a second opinion, or if the customer comes back weeks later and you need reminding about the visit. Explain to the customer what will (or won’t) happen next and how long this will take. If you don’t know, let them know when you’ll get back to them so they’re not chasing you the moment you get back to the shop. This may sound like common sense, but the feedback I get as an independent consultant is that it’s not common practice. These things make a difference. They can be summed up in two parts: show respect for your customer and be professional. Visit: www.richard-renouf.com Richard Renouf is an independent furnishings consultant

As the van travels the country the response from retailers has been positive, as they can see first-hand the quality in design and manufacturing across the recognised price points, says Tasleem Tasab, Serene md. ‘It’s safe to say that each of the new collections has received a huge thumbsup from the UK retail trade, with floor models bringing displays to life up and down the country, backed by quick turnaround on orders from our enormous stock holding, to the delight of retailers and consumers alike,’ he says. Along with latest additions, the show van also carries a selection of established bestsellers, such as the Fabric Collection. ‘It continues to perform exceptionally well, successfully presenting great designs – something for every taste and home – from the most modern to the traditional, in a wonderful palette of ontrend colours,’ says Tasab. ‘Fabrics have been chosen wisely for individuality, touch and durability – the combination of colour and fabric type has a huge bearing on each design – soft, neutral tones; pastels and bold colours all have a different effect on the lines, shape and proportions of a bed.’ As consumers crave more storage, ottoman designs have been added to the Fabric Collection for 2016. With a wide mix of fabrics to choose from, they can merge with almost any bedroom style. The Cordelia ottoman is available in three sizes (135cm, 150cm and 180cm) and three colours (Duck Egg, Latte and Ruby) with substantial storage in the base and optional wood finish legs. Katherine provides another look as an ottoman with a striking head and foot end. It is available in three fabric tones (Charcoal, Linen and Pearl) and three sizes: 135cm, 150cm and 180cm. Points of distinction GNG Group has relaunched its Komfi brand ‘Different isn’t dangerous. Staying the same is dangerous. The fundamental need to be different is evident: your customers are more brand-savvy, designled, and lifestyle-driven than ever before. If you don’t update your offer to reflect this, you’re gambling with your livelihood,’ says Sally Hellmann, GNG Group group marketing executive. ‘Komfi dared to be different. The newly relaunched Komfi brand is designed to connect with consumers in a radically changing market. Working with an award-winning design agency, the new look Komfi offers an immersive brand experience sure to wow your customers. Emphasising the core brand values: distinctive, innovative and British, Komfi is tailored to offer an eye-catching point of difference,’ she says. With a slick consumer website to complement POS and brochures, Hellmann reckons Komfi fills the gap between great looking Internet-only brands and the reassurance that only comes when buying in-store. ‘At Komfi we appreciate just how frustrating it can be when potential customers come into your showroom, bounce up and down, find the bed of their dreams… and then purchase it online. That’s why Komfi is committed to supplying only bricks and mortar retailers. By protecting mark-ups, you can rest assured that if your customer falls in love with a Komfi mattress, they’ll also fall in love with your price,’ she explains. ‘Each Komfi mattress encompasses sleep technology that holds its own against any rival for your customer’s affections. No more missing out on a sale to out-of-town sheds. Many mattresses come with a 15-year warranty. If there’s a problem, Komfi sorts it. ‘This is all backed with an aftersales service that takes the burden from you, and transfers it directly to the dedicated Komfi customer service team: leaving you to do the thing that you do best: ensure your customer goes home delighted with their choice of mattress,’ adds Hellmann. Sealy will continue its World of Sport campaign at this year’s event with Phil ‘Tuffers’ Tufnell hosting a meet and greet on its stand on the first day of the show. The former England spin bowler, Test Match Special summariser and A Question of Sport captain will be helping Sealy raise awareness of the intrinsic link between sleep and sporting success. During his cricket career, Tufnell was nicknamed ‘The Cat’ because of his propensity to be found sleeping in the dressing room. Tufnell’s support follows appearances by boxing champion David Haye, and Olympic snowboarder, Zoe Gillings-Brier, at the show in 2015. The manufacturer will also be reaffirming its dedication to technological innovation, presenting a selection of revamped products including its new-look Hybrid range. Featuring cutting-edge design, the mattress collection requires no turning. Visitors on the day will also be able to experience its range of new releases for the Pocket collection. Another key focus at the show will be the Teramo 1400 pocket sprung mattress that was hailed the ‘best mattress tested in years’ by Which? for the second consecutive year in July. The model was awarded the highest score when tested

The Teramo has also received praise in reviews by the Daily Mail and The Independent newspapers and has proven to be a popular choice with consumers. Commended for its softness and the solid support it provides, Which? found that the Teramo is very easy to turn over on, while being stable enough to not
disturb a partner. Visitors will be able to try out the Best Buy for themselves at the show. Sealy’s sales team will also be on hand throughout to offer expert advice about the brand’s full range of products, as well as details on show-exclusive offers and deals. The manufacturer will also be revealing its new-look website, which will help its customers keep up to date with
the latest news about its products and innovations. Focus on growth Highgrove is looking to double sales after moving to its new home
Strathmore
More than £3m has been spent on equipping the factory
42
Interiors Monthly September 2016
Bed manufacturer Highgrove has set itself the target of doubling sales in the next five years. The company wants to see turnover hit £50m by 2021. Sales jumped by 20% last year and, according to Shane Harding, Highgrove head of marketing, it is on course to repeat the achievement this year. Founded in 2002 by Wazarat Ali, in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, the company outgrew its site and in 2007 bought the former Jay-Be factory in nearby Gomersal. Within a few years it became clear that this facility would not be large enough for increasing sales as it was limited to 2,000 beds a week. Ali began to look for a location that would allow it to grow and become its permanent home. Given his plan, finding a suitable location was not going to be easy, or cheap. But, after driving past an industrial plant on the edge of Liversedge, he was struck by an idea and in December 2013 paid £3.5m for the site. What did he get? A 20acre site that needed buildings knocked down and a lot of concrete to level parts up. After another £3.5m was spent on machinery and fitting out the 250,000sqft of production facilities and offices, Highgrove moved in last September. Not that any customers noticed: Ali’s months of meticulous planning and overseeing the relocation ensured service levels were unaffected and it was only when it wrote to retailers that they knew. Having a new factory has allowed the company to improve manufacturing efficiencies and reduce handling. Production is already at 5,000 units a

week but laurels are not being rested on. The axis of its 35,000sqft finished products warehouse area is being turned to allow for a 20% expansion. It has taken delivery of 15 new delivery trucks, with five more to come (another £750,000). The company has also invested heavily in stock to make sure it can maintain its speedy delivery: 98% of orders are made and delivered within seven days and if Liversedge was cut off from the world it could maintain production for three months. At this month’s Bed Show, it will officially introduce its Sanctum and Moresleep brands. Highgrove has long had a wide collection and the introduction of the brands will bring a more focused approach, with Moresleep, a mainly open coil range covering the value end of the sector; the pocket sprung Highgrove focusing on the middle market; and Sanctum aiming at the top end. ‘Customers are asking for more top end products, which we can produce with quicker delivery than many others,’ says Ali. ‘The introduction of the brands will widen our appeal to new retailers. We can react to customers’ demands very quickly, which is an advantage.’ Harding says the business has been focused on the independent sector and although the improved manufacturing facilities will allow it to look to the multiples, this focus will remain. ‘We’re not selling direct and the brochure products are not marketed online. We want to develop Highgrove, Sanctum and Moresleep as brands: we don’t just want to produce white label products,’ adds Harding. Highgrove, tel: 01274 878 823

A different perspective Hush-a-Bye will tackle turnability Easyturn will be introduced at the show
‘For many years, Hush-a-Bye has been recognised for the quality and value of our beds and customer service. We are proudly supportive of our bricks and mortar retailers, supplying a wide range of stylish, mid-market pocket sprung beds. Hush-a-Bye offers a truly flexible approach with the ability to produce special sizes and bespoke options. This gives the traditional, independent retailer a fantastic opportunity to offer great choice and allows them to demonstrate a real point of difference,’ says Andy Richards, Hush-a-Bye sales director. Retailer support does not end with the product however. ‘We recognise that independent stores have much to offer that the Internet can’t match. Most obvious is the personal interaction with the customer, backed with a deep understanding of the product. ‘That is why we run factory based training days for all our retailers. With a complete run-through of the features and benefits of the entire range and a factory visit, there is something for everyone, whether you have been selling

‘We have turned this convention on its head and tackled the problem from a different angle’ beds for 20 years or are new to the industry.’ Innovation is key; previous debuts at the Telford show have included Coolwave. This latex gel range tackles the challenges of delivering the benefits of foam support without the heat issues associated with memory foam. Since its launch, it has been a great success and will be on show again this year. Coolwave demonstrated the desire to tackle problems from a very different perspective. ‘Most companies start with a warm product such as memory foam and then
try to make it cooler, whereas we started with latex, an inherently cooler material. Added to the latex is a cooling gel that has been shown in independent tests to absorb heat considerably slower than memory foam, thereby keeping the sleeping surface much cooler,’ says Richards. ‘At Hush-a-Bye we look for the real issues that customers are concerned with and then solve them. For example, better quality beds such as ours tend to have more fillings and are therefore heavier. This means that “turnability” is a real issue for many of our customers. The standard approach to this issue has been to make the mattress no-turn but this can have an impact on longevity due to settlement. ‘We have turned this convention on its head and tackled the problem from a very different angle. The ingenious solution is called Easyturn and will be launched at the Bed Show. We believe this is a fantastic solution and I can’t wait for our customers to be able to try it for themselves,’ adds Richards. Visit: www.hushabyebeds.co.uk

New bunks include Jolly Roger, the bed that thinks it’s a ship with a porthole either end, and Hero, a simple white wooden bunk that can be split into two separate beds. Upholstery is reintroduced to the Sweet Dreams brochure this year and includes many of the British-made models previously sold under the Comfort Zone name. British-made models comprise over 80% of the range in a spectrum of styles. There are classic sofas such as Stranraer and, at the top end, Knightsbridge, with modern styles such as Langdale, and cottage suites such as Wordsworth. It also includes a capsule collection of
contemporary–retro models such as Carmen and Penny Lane. Upholstery fabrics – also used for the fabric bedframes – have been subtly reimagined, offering greater choice. There is a five-year warranty on all Sweet Dreams’ own-manufacture sofas and chairs. For 2016, a small selection of overseas produced upholstery complements the British-made product, with leather-look predominating. The final range in the brochure is sofabeds. Royal Pillowtop, launched in 2015, will see the addition of four models featuring a box pillowtop. These beds are about extending the comfort of pillowtops to the very edge of the mattress. The pillowtops incorporate fillings such as memory foam and the mattresses feature Sweet Dreams’ own manufacture pocket springs. The bases are in a plain modern fabric with bumper bar and Shepherd castors and come in three sizes, with drawers and three ottoman options. These divans are expected to be the major attraction of the Lancashire bed manufacturer’s 2016 showcase. The Pocket Air collection, launched in 2014, has been refreshed throughout for the show with eight new models and a new look focusing on contemporary fabrics. Luxury specifications and fillings continue to characterise the collection. Pocket Air beds have an alternate arrangement of full size and shorter springs for a flexible, lighter than air feel. Meanwhile, the Enchanted collection now offers cream or grey bases to each of the eight models. With encapsulated spring mattresses that provide support right to the edge, Enchanted beds sport a removable soft-knit cover and fillings including silk and cashmere. Other divan collections such as the Pocket Spring introduces further models, for example Luxury Latex 2000. With latex to the full sleeping surface of the bed and a 2,000 spring count, the divan joins the extensive range of beds in this collection. Beds from the Pocket Spring collection, like Enchanted, come in multiple storage options. Other collections including Sleepzone and Ortho will also see an array of new models added. Among existing models on show will be Renoir – from Sweet Dreams’ collection of fabric upholstered beds that are made in its Lancashire factories – sporting self-covered buttons in the headboard and footend. Sweet Dreams will also be launching its 2016 brochure, containing many more new products. In bedframes, there are a number of additions. The idea behind the British Wool Collection is simple: to offer retailers and consumers a beautiful, traditional mattress collection featuring the luxurious comfort of British wool at an affordable price point. This collection has been developed in partnership with The British Wool Marketing Board, which helped to ensure the best possible type of British wool was selected for this product. The collection offers three pocket spring mattresses with a choice of softer, medium or firmer comfort. Each mattress features three layers of wool, including British Cheviot wool, selected for its springiness and durability. Mattresses are double sided for longer lasting comfort and traditionally tufted. The zoned pocket spring unit offers tailored support

to ensure a comfortable night’s sleep. ‘Our research identified a gap in the market for a traditional offering with the luxury of British wool at a more affordable price point. We believe this is a stunning collection of wonderfully comfortable mattresses that offer all of the benefits of natural wool including British Cheviot wool and combined with the stylish upholstered bases and headboards, this really is affordable luxury’, says Nick Booth, Rest Assured marketing director. Tim Booth, British Wool marketing manager, says he knew he would be able to help Rest Assured when it approached the organisation. ‘It is such a fantastic natural, renewable resource, and British Cheviot wool really is perfect for this collection of mattresses, being naturally springy and highly durable and from sheep found in the countryside on the borders of England and Scotland. It is a
soft yet sturdy fibre that gives both body and bounce to the mattress and is extremely resilient.’ ‘Each of the British Wool Collection mattresses has been carefully crafted to deliver superb comfort and has been designed to work in perfect harmony with the British Wool Collection sprung divan bases. They have premium silver ball castors and can be upholstered in a choice of six stunning wool-feel fabrics. There are various storage options to select from to help the consumer to make the most of the space they have in their bedroom,’ adds Rest Assured’s Booth. To complete the look there are four exclusive headboard designs. Each is hand-upholstered in the same fabrics as on the base, with two full height and two strutted designs to select from. Looking to the future Furmanac goes from strength to strength Furmanac, a family business with family values, is approaching its 49th year of trading and as it gets nearer to the 50-year milestone, Aubane Pattar, Furmanac sales and marketing director, has been looking back at some of the achievements that have helped the company reach its market leading position. ‘I can’t believe that over 29 years ago we manufactured our first adjustable bed, and now we are the UK’s largest adjustable bed manufacturer, with two market leading adjustable bed brands,’ she says. ‘When you consider that we moved from a 3,000sqft factory to the 20,000sqft and 15,000sqft factories we are in today you can see how much we have grown as a company.’ While much of this success must be accredited to the hard working, dedicated employees and the evergrowing loyal customer base, Pattar says credit must also be given to the leadership of the company’s mds. most imminently being the Bed Show. ‘I can promise there will be a lot to get excited about. Looking back at last year we only launched a couple of new things but that is nothing compared to what we have planned for this year.’ In addition to the new products, the Furmanac stand will also feature bestsellers from the Hestia divan and bedframe collections as well as the MiBed range. ‘Exhibitions are some of our busiest and favourite times of year because it is always great way to catch up with our customers outside of our respective offices,’ she adds. John Tuton regards the show as the perfect platform to promote Mammoth
Great opportunity Mammoth is looking forward to more success With a track record for success at the Bed Show, mattress and upholstery company Mammoth will unveil a luxury mattress, divans and swatches at this year’s event alongside its upgraded website designed to drive further footfall and offer more support for stockists. ‘We constantly strive to create and develop innovative products that offer added health benefits and meet retailers’ demands. The Bed Show is the perfect platform to launch our latest designs, shout about our news and to tell the story behind the brand, and we’re very much looking forward to unveiling our latest concepts at this year’s event,’ says John Tuton, Mammoth founder. The company recently won an NHS award for innovation in pressure relief –

contributing to its strong story and selling points for retailers. ‘We’ve exhibited at the NBF Bed Show for the past few years and for us it’s a great opportunity to meet Mammoth customers in one fell swoop. We are now approaching around 300 shopfloors where Mammoth products are stocked – a lot of that custom has come from past shows,’ he says. Tuton says it’s a great opportunity to discuss and understand retailers’ challenges and see how Mammoth can help them identify and fulfil their opportunities. ‘It’s also the perfect annual event to highlight our innovative, forward thinking ranges and the added value services we offer. When someone has
seen and spoken to us, they really understand Mammoth and why it’s so unique. We only launched six years ago but we are quick learners, passionate and highly energetic. Sometimes it feels like Mammoth has been around for decades and certainly many of our stockists and customers feel like the brand has been long established. To us, that says a lot about the positive impact we’ve had on the industry,’ he explains. This year it will showcase its core range and unveil the latest additions and services. ‘Visitors to the stand can see for themselves what makes us one of the UK’s fastest growing upholstery and mattress brands,’ adds Tuton. Roll up for expansion Shire Beds continues to invest in bigger premises, equipment and products It’s been a busy year for The Shire Bed Company, which is on course to invest nearly £2.5m in expanding the business. The company has already invested almost £750,000 to extend and restructure its major manufacturing facility in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. Now further development is in the pipeline for the family-run business, which has been at its current location since 2001. Purchasing an additional 60,000sqft site will increase the size of the operation to more than 100,000sqft, bringing its total investment to nearly £2.5m. Initial expansion saw an increase in size from 30,000sqft to 47,000sqft creating work for an additional 20 staff. The company, which produces the Shire collection, Eco Shire, Active Shire and Contract Shire, is now about to launch a range of roll-up mattress products. Investment continued with more than £100,000 for a new automatic, all-in-one, top of the range, border, handle and label machine for its mattresses. It has also bought two ‘hot pink’ delivery vehicles. The unmissable DAF lorries complement the company’s already extensive fleet of multicoloured vehicles used for weekly and next day deliveries across the UK. Road users who are out and about and spot the new trucks are invited to send a photograph and location to @shirebeds on Twitter. Strengthening its relationship with Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Shire Beds has signed a three-year major sponsorship deal until the end of the 2018 season, this follows an initial oneyear sponsorship package in 2015. ‘It’s been a really busy year. With the initial stage of the expansion now complete the extra space means we have been able to start manufacture of the new Roll and Rest collection which we will be launching at the Bed Show,’ says Fara Butt, The Shire Bed Company marketing director. ‘With business growing the continuing investments allow us to offer our customers a more comprehensive selection of products,’ she adds. Feminine luxury Duvalay is expanding its Hilary Devey Collection A year on from the launch at last year’s Bed Show, Duvalay’s Hilary Devey Collection has delivered on its promise to add a touch of glamour to what the company says is an otherwise maledominated industry. The collection is the result of Devey’s investment in the company, having featured on BBC show Dragons’ Den. ‘Comprising of five premium mattresses, along with divans and a selection of headboards available in only the plushest of fabrics, each is produced by hand using custom-blends of materials including silk, wool, cashmere and cotton. Made using only artisan bed making techniques, each mattress within the collection delivers on quality and comfort, with a range of features that deliver a flawless night’s sleep,’ says Liz Colleran, Duvalay marketing and sales director. She says the collection encompasses a feminine aspect not seen previously. ‘Luxury and glamour is at the heart of the collection, thanks to the quality of our products as well as supporting POS. Having Hilary’s influence within the collection has certainly helped the brand to stand out, not only with retailers but consumers and the media as well,’ she says. After a well-received launch at last year’s show, Duvalay has concentrated its efforts over the last year on securing distribution of the collection into a number of premium bed retailers across the UK. ‘Keen to support our distribution channels, we support our retailers by giving access to our own PR and marketing teams, along with a range of POS that fits in with the glamorous theme. With our own PR activities gaining media coverage across national and consumer titles, we’re finding it is driving consumers into stores to seek our Hilary Devey Collection to try out,’ adds Colleran. Duvalay will unveil additions to the Hilary Devey Collection at this year’s Bed Show. Already voted as 2016’s best mattress by The Independent, the

The first 100 years John Cotton Group is celebrating its centenary
Fundraising events included a gala evening

Interiors Monthly September 2016
In the last 100 years Britain alone has been involved in two world wars, been ruled by four different monarchs and joined and voted to leave the European Union. As American playwright Wilson Mizner wrote: ‘the first 100 years are the hardest’. There is one business, however, that has seen all these events in the years since it began – bedding specialist, John Cotton Group. It was in 1916 that Jack Cotton started his own wool waste business in Huddersfield trading under his preferred name, John. The business moved to Mirfield in 1926 and continued to expand and grow through the 1930s. Leading the way with innovation, the company expanded rapidly. Jack’s son, John Cotton, joined the family firm in 1958 and seven years later took control of the company. When John Cotton took the business over in 1965 he had big aspirations for the future. The company relocated to Nunbrook Mills and in 1979 began manufacturing pillows and duvets, for which the group is now a renowned specialist.
Since the turn of the millennium, the company has gone from strength to strength, acquiring and building its market leading bedding brands, Snuggledown and Slumberdown, and expanding into Europe and China, all while winning several awards along the way. Those accolades include the NBF Lifetime Achievement award in 2010, Asda’s Supplier of the Year award in 2010 and 2015 and the NBF 2015 Bed Component Supplier of the Year in 2015. And this year, John Cotton Group was proud to have been awarded the Interiors Monthly Editor’s Choice Award for Sustainability. If that wasn’t enough, in 2014 John Cotton himself was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Honours list, which was presented by Prince William. One hundred years is not just a fantastic milestone, it also offers companies like John Cotton an unrivalled opportunity to look back on the last century and expertly compare the world it started in with the one it finds itself in now. ‘Back at the start of the 20th ‚‚‚

century, business and trade was booming and none more so than the textiles industry in the North of England. However, approaching the end of the 20th century, with further technological and trade advances, there was a noticeable increase in overseas competitors offering lower costs which some UK manufacturers could not match. Despite this, John Cotton Group has gone from strength to strength, thanks to our cutting edge approach, innovation and well thought out reinvestments and acquisitions,’ says Mark Cotton, John’s son, and now group md. John Cotton Group has a large number of employees who have worked at the company for more than 25 years, passing down skills to the younger generation and it also supports the teams with state of the art machinery, back office support and research and development. A good example of heritage and innovation working hand in hand is reflected in the Snuggledown product range, which seamlessly combines John Cotton’s years of experience with the latest technology. As can be expected, the business has

some big plans for 2016 to get people involved in helping it celebrate reaching this outstanding milestone. John Cotton set the target of raising £100,000 throughout the year but has already raised in excess of this. This is mainly thanks to fundraising events which included a Fun Day, a charity gala, the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge and a 761 mile bike ride from Poland to Mirfield taking place in September. Currently employing 1,100 staff across West Yorkshire and East Lancashire, the group understands that you can’t run a business without loyal and dedicated staff at the forefront. As John Cotton
once said: ‘You can’t do everything. You have to delegate…to the right people.’ ‘The average lifespan of a company in the UK is 15 years, so to be celebrating 100 years is an outstanding achievement and one we are unbelievably proud of,’ says Mark. ‘We are looking forward to a busy year ahead, full of fundraising activities and would welcome sponsors of employees in their challenges. Funds raised will be shared between Yorkshire Cancer Centre, Macmillan Cancer Support, Kirkwood Hospice, Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice.’ John Cotton Group, tel: 01924 496 571

Unifloor Underlay Systems is introducing the Jumpax Family, Marathon Dual and floor heating solutions Jumpax Heat Traditional and Jumpax Heat Isolator. The Jumpax Family consists of six fast-track floor preparation systems. Each is designed to complement a specific type of floor finish and/or base floor situation. The two self-adhesive components are quickly and easily fitted as a free-floating sub-floor, instantly smoothing over typical irregularities and eliminating the need for screeds, primers, ply boards and nails. It is not necessary to remove old floorcoverings, loose screeds or even surface contamination. The company says failures of new floors due to problem substrates, minor cracks or laitance become a thing of the past with Jumpax, and also saves considerable time and money. Marathon Dual enables a simple and economical, dry subfloor preparation. Creating a perfect surface, immediately suitable for floating cushion vinyl, click LVTs and self-adhesive LVTs. Interiors Monthly September 2016
Karndean Designflooring is introducing the LooseLay Longboard collection with 1.5m planks for extra impact in open plan and large residential and commercial spaces. The range features 12 contemporary wood designs, each inspired by authentic European, American and Australian woods including pine, walnut and spotted gum. Enhancing its established Karndean LooseLay range, LooseLay Longboard introduces one of the UK’s longest loose lay vinyl plank designs in a 1,500mm x 250mm format with a 0.55mm wear layer and 4.5mm thickness. ‘With demand increasing for our Karndean LooseLay across residential and commercial interiors alike, we’re thrilled to introduce our longest format as a loose lay vinyl option,’ explains Scott Cochrane, Karndean Designflooring UK sales director. ‘Being 40% larger than our existing designs, our new plank format will be extremely popular with independent retailers looking to offer the flexibility and convenience of our loose lay vinyl designs, but in an extra-long design for quicker installation in large residential and commercial spaces. ‘Likewise, our new woods offer a wide array of sophisticated colourways, intricate design features and authentic finishes to complement emerging trends in interior design.’ Karndean’s European oaks are split into two distinct groups. Twilight and Raven Oak offer on-trend grey and charcoal tones for a modern look with authentic knots, lightly brushed grain details and subtle distressed finishes. Inspired by ageing French oak boards recovered from the heart of the Loire Valley in Blois, Karndean’s Pearl, Natural and French Grey Oak designs present individual interpretations of this attractive wood through the process of liming, light brushing and adding colour. While the lighter tones reveal cross-sawn elements across the planks for a blend of natural and manmade features, the darker tones highlight individual knots and gnarls. American inspired woods include reclaimed and rustic pines – Reclaimed, Antique and Weathered Heart Pine – and

a contrasting warm walnut design – Character Walnut. The detailing in the reclaimed timber replicates both natural open grain and manmade markings for a unique, aged look, whereas Character Walnut takes on the true colour of walnut. The collection includes two Australian designs: Bleached Tasmanian Oak and Lemon Spotted Gum. Offering a sustainable alternative to real Tasmanian oak sourced from remote lumber yards in south-eastern Australia, Bleached Tasmanian Oak features original growth rings and subtle colour variation in a whitewashed finish. With cool, crisp lines, the subtle spotted appearance and large amounts of sapwood within Lemon Spotted Gum reflect the natural characteristics of this rich Australian wood. ‘Our designers continue to enhance techniques to ensure each design not only replicates the realistic beauty and individuality of its original source, but also remains easy to clean and practical to meet the demands of busy lifestyles,’ adds Scott. LooseLay’s friction grip backing and increased dimensional stability secures the floor firmly in place, and it can be installed over most hard and flat floors as long as they are clean, dry and dust-free. The extra-long plank means it’s quick and easy to fit, allowing reduced downtime and upheaval for consumers or commercial customers working to demanding time scales. It has a lifetime residential guarantee and 12-year commercial guarantee. Visit: www.karndean.com

Twist of fate Adam Carpets celebrates a quarter of a century of Fine Worcester Twist May 1991 saw the launch of one of the most important and iconic carpet ranges, Fine Worcester Twist. Manufactured in Kidderminster by Adam Carpets, it became the first tufted carpet to challenge the premise that woven carpets were better than their tufted counterparts. ‘Former md David Adam and former sales director and consultant Jim Bennett, deserve enormous credit and recognition for Fine Worcester,’ says Eamonn Prescott, Adam Carpets sales director. ‘The amount of time, effort and attention to detail that they both invested in Fine Worcester Twist was considerable, but it paid off. The range is now universally recognised as the best twist carpet on the market today.’ Fine Worcester started out with 20 colours, but the appointment of Tony Hardwick as sales director in 1995 saw the range expand rapidly.
92
Interiors Monthly September 2016
‘Tony could see the potential of Fine Worcester Twist and wanted to further enhance it by introducing new colours on a frequent basis,’ explains Prescott. ‘By 1998 the range had doubled in size to 40 and by the millennium it was up to 47. It reached 65 in 2002 and that number has remained current. Mainly down to the size of the drum being as big as it could get.’ The range has secured its reputation for colour and quality. ‘Fine Worcester Twist is now more than just a carpet: it is an institution. If you talk to retailers they will tell you that Fine Worcester Twist is their first port of call for colour and inspiration for customers. The constant updating of colours and a commitment to quality means that we are already looking forward to the next 25 years of Fine Worcester Twist,’ adds Prescott. Visit: www.adamcarpets.com

Rol-lite sells more blinds through flooring retailers than soft furnishing stores
Flooring and blinds are often purchased within a short time of each other
‘As a direct result of exhibiting at The Flooring Show last year we established many new and exciting partnerships and are delighted to be returning this month,’ says Paul Swanson, Rol-lite marketing manager. ‘This time around we have a slightly larger floorspace allowing us to show a more diverse range of products. The decision to exhibit at The Flooring Show previously was partly based on the findings of a customer survey we undertook. We identified that our existing carpet and flooring specialist customers sell more blinds than our soft furnishing customers. This was an intriguing finding, which led us to pursue new partnerships within the carpet and flooring sector. Our view that many householders purchase flooring and blinds within a short time period seems to be reinforced by fact that the largest trade supplier of blinds within the UK, which has a network of agents covering the entire UK, now offers carpets. Why not take the order for blinds as well as carpets?’ Swanson says many of its carpet and flooring retail partners have found that blinds are now a core product for their business and with the uncertainty regarding the UK economy, they are pleased to have blinds within their product portfolio. ‘One carpet retailer who recently visited us at our offices and manufacturing facility said that he wished he had started selling blinds years ago,’ adds Swanson. When first offering blinds Rol-lite recommends using pattern books, POS material and sample blinds: not too

dissimilar to the way in which carpets and flooring are sold. ‘The initial outlay is relatively modest and so there is little risk involved. Our area managers and technical team are happy to provide guidance regarding survey and installation of our window blinds. Our online ordering platform also allows for nothing to be missed in terms of details we require to manufacture blinds to your exact requirements,’ he says. ‘At the show we will be showing how straightforward window blinds are to install. There will also be a daily prize for the person who can install our no drill Perfect Fit blinds in the quickest time, so why not visit stand B12 and try for yourself,’ adds Swanson. Fitting finalists The National Institute of Carpet and Floorlayers has reintroduced its Carpet Fitter of the Year competition after a 15-year gap. Ian James, NICF president, says: ‘The Fitter of the Year competition last ran in 2001, when it was won by Tim Nicholas from Wales. I was fortunate enough to make the finals of the competition three times: an experience that was only eclipsed by my being on the winning team in the European Floor Laying Competition in 2005. I always said that if I were ever NICF president I would make it my mission to bring the competition back.’ A dozen semi-finalists were reduced to six after two days of competition at the Flooring Industry Training Association’s training centre in Loughborough. The six finalists who will battle it out on 18 and 19 September are: Darren Ash, Michael Atkinson, Byron Terrett, Paul Finch, Mark Smurthwaite and Nick Hood. The winner will be announced at 4pm on 19 September.

POS ‘roars’
Balta is adding to its super-soft offer ‘With POS that roars and two exclusive super-soft styles that promise to take care of prides across the country, Leonis is our latest collection,’ says Geert Vanden Bossche, Balta Broadloom marketing director. Featuring StainSafe Sensit two-ply yarn for a carpet that is not only soft but strong, and being bleach-cleanable is easy to care for and gives families a carpet that is ready to take on daily life. ‘The rise in super-soft carpets has been extraordinary and due to their popularity it is clear that they should be a key feature in every store,’ he reckons. ‘However, most super-soft carpets have a weak link, in that they lack the reassurance of stain-resistance, but this is
not so with Leonis. Benefiting from our StainSafe Sensit fibre innovation, Leonis carpets are not only super-soft, but stain resistant too, making them a great alternative that homeowners are sure to love.’ The collection launches with two classic twist-pile styles, versatile Sarafina with a 1,650g per sqm pile weight, and Sarabi with a 1,900g per sqm pile weight. Each are available in 12 on-trend colours and 4m and 5m width options. Both benefit from two-ply yarn for lasting resilience and carpets that are comfortable, stain-resistant and strong. Balta’s Twinback backing enhances the comfort of Leonis even further, the twolayer woven/needle-felt construction
offering up to six-times more comfort than standard woven backings. The backing also makes the carpets easier to fit, bringing advantages for installers too. ‘Leonis will be launched on a doublesided lectern with imagery that helps the collection to stand out in-store. This theme is continued through sample books, presenters and in-store marketing assets to deliver a range equipped for the modern retail environment, where brand and image is playing an increasingly important part in the purchasing process. A dedicated microsite at www.leoniscarpet.com will also shortly be available,’ adds Vanden Bossche. Balta Broadloom, tel : 0032 5662 2211

Let’s twist again The latest twist pile range from Brockway Carpets ‘Practical and stylish, the ever-popular Orion Twist is a natural choice for soft autumn looks. This contemporary wool-rich carpet represents affordable comfort and warmth combined with resilience and durability in a subtly varied palette,’ says Shaun Lewis, Brockway Carpets sales director. With a subtle fleck Orion Twist brightens the home and can endure heavy traffic. It’s available in two qualities, Orion Twist 42 and Orion Twist Major 60, and comes in a fashion palette of 12 warm natural shades. The range is made from 80% pure new wool in a heat-set twist, making it luxurious yet hard-wearing, and ideal for the busy family home. ‘Brockway’s twist pile ranges are consistently good sellers. Orion Twist is a contemporary berber style carpet offered in two pile weights. And because this range is made from New Zealand and British wools, it means carpets looks great for longer,’ says Lewis. Orion Twist also features Brockway’s innovative, environmentally beneficial carpet-backing Envirobac. This lighter weight backing offers numerous advantages, being flexible, super-strong and stable. It is energy efficient, effluent and emission-free and can be recycled at the end of its useful life. Brockway has been designing and producing premium quality, hand-finished carpets in Kidderminster since 1964. ‘As the home of wool carpets, we combine British craftsmanship using the finest raw materials to ensure the sustainable manufacture of award-winning carpets, which offer great value for money for any budget and taste,’ adds Lewis. Taking tablets MasterPiece can now be used on more devices Customers will be impressed in their homes by the professional presentation of the new version of MasterPiece, suitable for iPads and Android tablets. ‘There is a clear attraction here for those who have already invested in a tablet, however, the new version has a further benefit by saving to the Cloud, so jobs are backed up and immediately available to colleagues back in the store,’ says Charles Pearson, MasterPiece System md. The new version has many of the usability benefits of the traditional PC-based MasterPiece. For example, drawing and measuring of rooms is done the same way as when using paper and pencil, so evenings will no longer have to be spent wading through a backlog of plans. ‘The traditional desktop MasterPiece continues to provide a feature rich capability for organisations that do commercial or new-build work or require detailed tile planning for complex product sets, like Amtico and Karndean,’ he adds. Freedom trail Kaleidoscope introduces ‘a new level of design’ With geometric designs and bespoke shapes high on the agenda, Karndean Designflooring is to introduce its ‘most innovative and intricate designs’ with its Kaleidoscope collection. It is designed to offer unparalleled flexibility for independent retailers and flooring contractors looking to create a unique floor design, according to the company. The collection contains popular shapes and patterns, such as hexagons, chevrons and cubes to name but a few, that can be cut in a number of colour combinations across Karndean’s established wood and stone designs. Kaleidoscope also introduces block colourways, giving independent retailers the ability to contrast bright colours against wood and stone for added visual interest and statement floor designs. ‘We’ve always been recognised for our authentic designs that bring the real beauty of wood and stone to flooring, but with much greater flexibility,’ comments Scott Cochrane, Karndean Designflooring UK sales director. ‘The tiles and planks, combined with borders and inset strips, can be formed into many standard designs; but Kaleidoscope designs push this to a new level of design, allowing complete freedom for unique shapes, sizes, colour combinations and patterns.’ The range will be at The Flooring Show later this month. This year did not disappoint and we were delighted that so many retailers visited the show,’ says Nichola Bell, Westbridge sales director. ‘Earlier this year we welcomed a new designer to our team, Rob Chadwick. The show was certainly his baptism of fire and he took up the challenge with vigour. Once again we had one of the largest stands and Rob and the team created a light and welcoming space – a perfect backdrop to showcase his new designs.’ The company exhibited a mixture of both Westbridge and Elements models, also featuring its Heritage leather/fabric ranges, Heirloom, Explorer and Georgie.
‘The excitement for us was the introduction of a new and exciting fabric offering for our Elements range. We visualise Elements as the funky younger sister to Westbridge and we offer fantastic bursts of colour with fun and exciting accent fabrics. Our fabric designer Jo Butters certainly did us proud with comments that it was our best Elements offering to date,’ says Bell. ‘We spend time listening to our customers and this year we concentrated on compact, apartment type living. It may be a myth that bigger is better as so many people are looking for stylish smaller sofas. On this basis we introduced four ranges concentrating on overall width without compromising on seating capacity. These designs, combined with our new fabrics, created a fun and vibrant collection proving to be

the bestsellers at the show,’ she says. Leading the way was Edgar, a compact three-seater sofa in a mix of wool blend, velvets and cotton weave fabrics. Also new was Felix, a sofa range with corner option. Featuring a stunning arm detail, this model looks fantastic in every fabric on offer making it versatile for all styles. As trend dictates that ‘grey is the new beige’ the Morgan in a new graphite story proved to be popular, with its combination of simple style and interesting fabric textures. The new ranges offer five sizes of sofa plus armchair and matching accent chair. ‘All of the new product is now available to view in our dedicated showroom and we welcome any retailers who missed us at Manchester to come and see us in North Wales,’ adds Bell. Outstanding Performance (Furniture) Westbridge Furniture Designs
Westbridge has a large in-house design facility

Proud winner of the Editor’s Choice for Outstanding Performance (Furniture) award, Westbridge Furniture Designs has been making ‘beautifully British’ upholstery since 2004, employing more than 1,500 people in North Wales and designing furniture for many British retailers. ‘We are delighted to receive this recognition. It is our passionate aim to offer well-made British upholstery, inspired by the latest trends and to be the supplier of choice for innovation and design. We are very fortunate to have the largest in-house design resource in the UK who travel worldwide following trends and work with international retailers who are the centres of excellence in furniture retail. This allows us to be up to date with the fashion and trends of our industry,’ says Nichola Bell, Westbridge sales director. As the company has such a diverse range of customers, its products have to reflect the needs of each customer. ‘To do this we have a team of designers dedicated to the development of new product for the independent market. We appreciate the complexity of the market and the cost implications of dealing with many suppliers. Therefore we have created three ranges offering our customers the choice of good, better and best in terms of price point, style and specification. I guess you could call us a one-stop shop. As a relatively new
supplier to the independent sector we are continually working hard to provide every possible opportunity to create strong opportunities for our customers and although we have experienced fantastic success over recent years we are very conscious of the competitive nature of our industry,’ says Bell. This year saw the opening of the company’s showroom dedicated to its independent customers. ‘We realise the importance of providing a relaxed and comfortable environment so that our customers can spend uninterrupted time selecting their next displays.’ It also provides a facility for the Westbridge Training Academy. Sales staff benefit from visiting their suppliers and seeing first hand the product being made. Participants meet their daily contacts and can follow their order from start to finish in the manufacturing process. ‘We are also very proud of our accredited testing facility, also referred to as the torture chamber by some sales staff. This facility gives a unique insight into the way our products are tested and quantifies our quality guarantees. All of our customers are very welcome to visit our new showroom or book places on the training days. ‘May we take this opportunity to thank our loyal customers for their continued support and custom,’ adds Bell. Vale Bridgecraft with its 100-plus years’ heritage in the upholstery industry, is delighted to be the winner, for the third year running, of the Best Business Support (Furniture) award. Operating from Yorkshire with a team of about 100 people, the brand creates luxury sofas and chairs, starting with the rough-hewn timber to create a frame, right through to the upholstery using many exclusive fabrics and the finest fillings. The company supports most of the UK’s independent retailers and has nine showrooms displaying its extensive product ranges. Vale Bridgecraft also boosts awareness for its brand with national consumer advertising support and has just invested in a revamped website. ‘This is a great accolade for us all here at Vale Bridgecraft. We’re a small, experienced team with a real passion for the art of upholstery and are determined to maintain the high standards we’ve provided over the years – not only with our traditionally hand-build furniture, but also with the support we offer all our retail partners,’ says Stuart
Chadwick, Vale Bridgecraft md. ‘Our vertically integrated model, combining manufacturing and retail supply, all supported by the nine showrooms around the country, can be confusing to some. But those of our partners who embrace the process find it financially beneficial and, given that we’ve won this award again, easy and pleasurable to manage. ‘Our customer support team in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, works alongside our manufacturing team, micro-managing each order on its journey through to delivery. With the average time served for our staff being at least 15 years – and some a lot more – we are privileged that everyone who deals with our processes and stockists has a huge depth of upholstery knowledge and can help or advise. ‘But our main strength has to be our maintenance of personable working relationships. I’m a great believer that a chat over the phone will clarify a situation in a friendly way rather than submitting a stream of emails, and most of our customers seem to enjoy working this way too. So while we’re not investing in high-tech management systems, we’re investing in our people, our products, and our business relationships, making sure that we supply the very best product in the best, most efficient way,’ adds Chadwick.
