EDITOR’S COMMENT

Andrew Kidd EDITOR

A new beginning? Will a change of leadership mean a change of approach at Europe’s largest flooring distributor? Time will tell. I mentioned in last month’s issue that September was one of my favourite months as it is full of exhibitions and new products. This year was no exception, and more. The Bed Show, The Flooring Show, London Design Festival and Long Point were packed with new products and companies and it was great to see the innovation going on. Some of which we’ve already reported online, but the full reviews will be in the November issue once products have been confirmed and photography completed. We’ve also seen great contributions to charity, helping to raise £75,000 through cycling and golf (see p14). Congratulations to those who put themselves through it (I’m thinking cycling rather than golf ) and those who sponsored them.

The Flooring Show saw a 9.6% rise in visitor numbers to 3,119 – including me bumping into my parent’s local furniture and flooring retailer for the first time, which I then did again at The Bed Show. (He very reasonably asked why I hadn’t popped in and took it well that I live at the other end of the country.) Both shows continue to go from strength from strength and it proves that exhibitions can make the world a very small place and why you need to be there. Talk at Harrogate (and somewhat at Telford) was of course about the departure of Tony Brewer (who did so much to shape the group) from Headlam. Will we see a major change in direction after Steve Wilson and Tony Judge became ceo and coo respectively? I suspect things will remain much the same for a bit: both Wilson and Judge aren’t newcomers to the business, but after a while things could get interesting. The winner of our TFS subscription competition was Glen Sims of Costal Carpets of Marske, Redcar, North Yorkshire. Congratulations to Glen, and for those of you not as lucky as Glen you can check out subscriptions at www.interiorsmonthly.co.uk.

Thai firm buys 75% of Ashley Manor owner Alstons parent Thailand Carpet Manufacturing Company has strengthened its position in the UK upholstery market by buying a 75% stake in Ashley Manor parent DM Midlands. TCMC is paying £26.25m in cash for its stake in the Alexander & James and AMX Design owner. It will invest a further £8.75m in DM Midlands’ new holding company, valuing the deal at £35m. DM Midlands was jointly owned by David Lee, md, and his wife Debbie, and Mark Smith, design director, and his wife Julie. Lee and Smith will continue in their positions. In the year to 31 March, DM Midlands generated a pre-tax profit of £4.77m, up from £3.41m on sales of £71.05m, up from £68.38m. TCMC says DM Midlands accounted for 8% of the UK upholstery market.

‘This is an exciting and very positive development as we enter the next phase of our highly successful business. The partnership with TCMC is a great fit for us and both parties share the same values and similar cultures, meaning genuine long-term investment and expansion, which is great news for all those associated with us,’ says Lee. ‘Ashley Manor, Alexander & James and AMX Design are prestigious British companies with excellent growth potential. The businesses are thriving and are deservedly renowned for their innovative furniture design and quality products,’ says Pimol Srivikorn, TCMC chairman. ‘We look forward to developing the potential even further, strengthening the UK business and expanding further in their global markets,’ he adds.

More support for Carpet Foundation The Carpet Foundation has seen a significant boost in support from suppliers, with several new Patron Members. Associated Weavers, Cavalier Carpets, Clarendon, Crucial Trading, Edel Telenzo, Hugh Mackay, Kersaint Cobb, Kingsmead, Manx, Thomas Witter and Whitestone Weavers have joined long-standing supporters Brintons, British Wool Marketing Board, Brockway, Cormar Carpets, Victoria Carpets and Ulster Carpets. ‘The industry is now lining up to support us,’ says Andrew Stanbridge, Carpet Foundation chief executive. ‘Membership is open to all suppliers to the UK flooring market and is far more inclusive. As a result, we are assembling a very impressive list of supporters. It is a massive boost for us and a ringing endorsement of our efforts. We estimate that we now have over 50% of the total value of the UK residential market supporting us. Their reasons for joining are varied – but all have one thing in common – they want to support the independent retailer and they want the UK carpet industry to have a voice.’

Wilson and Judge in charge as Brewer departs Headlam Steve Wilson, Headlam group finance director since 1991, has become chief executive officer and Tony Judge has been promoted to chief operating officer. The group announced that ‘after more than 25 years with the business, Tony Brewer is stepping down as group chief executive. Tony, who was group chief executive for 16 years, has been instrumental in building the group, and the board would like to place on record its thanks and appreciation for all that he has achieved.’ Brewer was appointed an executive director in June 1991, becoming md of the floorcoverings division in January 1992, and was appointed group chief executive in November 2000. Wilson ‘brings to the role not only an in depth knowledge

of the group’s operations and financials but also a strong skillset for the future development of the business.’ Until the group appoints a new chief financial officer, Wilson will supervise the finance function. Judge, previously commercial director of the Coleshill and Tamworth businesses, ‘brings an abundance of knowledge and expertise to the role.’ ‘On behalf of the board, I would like to express our sincere thanks to Tony Brewer for his enormous contribution to the building of Headlam into Europe’s leading floorcovering distributor. We wish him well for the future,’ says Dick Peters, Headlam chairman. Brewer received a performance-related bonus of £592,000 last year, contributing to a pay package of £1.175m.

Dunelm rise Pre-tax profits at homewares chain Dunelm increased by 6.2% to £128.9m in the year to 2 July. Sales were 7.1% higher at £880.9m in the period, with like for like growth of 2.5%. In-store like for like sales rose by 1% with home delivery sales up 23.2%, accounting for 7% of turnover. The 152-store chain will open nine branches in the coming year, including three within the M25 where it currently only has eight. It is trialling new displays for furniture and rugs, including roomsets. Design Project is the chain’s latest collection

Profits down at John Lewis First half operating profits have tumbled by almost a third at John Lewis. Operating profits fell by 31.2% to £32.4m in the six months to 30 July for the department store chain. It said more than half of the fall was due to maintaining old sites in its distribution network to smooth the transition to its £150m Magna Park centre which opened last month, and increasing wages to maintain differentials.

Interiors Monthly October 2016

‘The balance of the reduction reflects the continued shift to online and a market dynamic of competitive pricing, both of which we expect to continue into the second half,’ says Sir Charlie Mayfield, John Lewis chairman. Sales lifted by 4.5% to £2.02bn, with like for like sales up 4.5%. Home sales rose by 3.7%, driven by furniture which increased by 6.8% with beds up 13.7%. Total online sales rose from 30.6% to 34.5%.

Industry gets sporty and raises £75,000 for charity The interiors industry has raised £75,000 for charities through three sporting events. Twenty two members of the Furniture Makers’ Company raised £57,000 for the industry charity by cycling 450 miles from London to Bordeaux, at an average of 80 miles a day. Those taking part were: Brian Ahern; Michael Ahern; Lee Andrews, Jonathan Hindle, Simon Power-Hynes, KI; Tony Attard, Panaz; Ben Burbidge; Peter Checketts, RHG Insurance Brokers; Hayden Davies, Furniture Makers’ Company junior warden; Peter Hooper; John Irwin, Tangent Furniture; Amanda Johnson; Nigel Johnson; Stewart Linford; Graham Marley; Andrew Purves, Purves & Purves; Ian Peers, Edward Tadros, Henry Tadros, Ercol; Nicholas Radford, Nathan Furniture; Paul von der Heyde and William White, Rotadex. Sponsors included Axminster Tools & Machinery, B&Q, Blum, BFM, Burbidge Kitchens, CD UK, Celtheath Contract Furniture, Designer Contracts, Ercol, Furniture Village, KI, Knoll, Lectra, Rotadex, Silentnight and Tangent Furniture. ‘I would like to thank everyone who has sponsored us. We have been flooded with congratulatory messages and well wishes. It was an amazing trip, which, despite a few sore legs, we were all thrilled to be a part of. I’m incredibly impressed by the courage and determination of everyone who participated,’ says Burbidge, FMC master. In another bike ride, six John Cotton employees and friends raised £9,888 cycling 761 miles from Gluszyca in Poland to the group’s head office in Mirfield, West Yorkshire at an average of 108 miles a day. The money raised brought the total for the company’s centenary year fundraising to £120,000 for Macmillan, Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, Kirkwood Hospice, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal and Derian House Children’s Hospice. ‘The team has done so well, the hot weather was something we couldn’t anticipate or train for, however the fitness across the group helped get us through the more challenging moments, it has been tough, we are so pleased

we made it through without any major issues. Thank you to everyone who donated and supported us throughout this. It is definitely going to be an experience I will never forget,’ says David Page, John Cotton sales and marketing director. Other members of the team were: Alan Bodell, Dave McDanielson, Daniel Hickling, Tim Nellis and Edyta Paxton. Karndean Designflooring’s annual charity golf day raised £8,000 for children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent. Karndean pledged its support to the charity after learning of the help it had given to Mason Gibbs, the son of Ian Gibbs, Karndean retail business manager. Being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin T-Cell lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, in April 2015, four year-old Mason has since completed an intense phase of chemotherapy and is now in the maintenance period of his treatment, due to finish in August 2018. ‘Understanding the support Mason, Ian and his family have received from CLIC Sargent, our charity golf day was the perfect opportunity for us to say thank you and recognise their fantastic work,’ says Paul Barratt, Karndean Designflooring md.

All in the family

Victoria on track

Bed manufacturer Harrison Spinks has been named Family Business of the Year at the UK Private Business Awards, sponsored by PwC, which celebrates the best in the private sector and their importance to the UK economy. ‘We’re extremely proud of our heritage and while we have more than 600 people working with us, we still like to maintain the family feel within the business. My father, son and I are all active within the company and the industry, so making high quality beds is in our DNA,’ says Simon Spinks, Harrison Spinks md.

Flooring group Victoria told shareholders ahead of last month’s AGM that it is on track to meet its objectives. ‘Victoria has found no shortage of demand from its customers following the outcome of the EU referendum. In addition to organic growth, the group is continuing to look for further acquisition targets and there is no shortage of opportunities. With a strong platform for growth in place the board continues to remain confident for the future and committed to delivering returns for shareholders,’ it said.

Fitting experience The best carpet fitters put on a display at Harrogate I readily admit that dealing with complaints day after day can be depressing. So it was a delight to watch the competitors for the title of Carpet Fitter of the Year 2016 at The Flooring Show. This competition used to be an annual highlight, but was discontinued about 15 years ago. Ian James, National Institute of Carpet and Floorlayers past president brought the competition back to life this year. The six finalists had started the competition by submitting a written questionnaire which tested their knowledge of carpet fitting and the current British Standard, BS 5325: 2001. They then completed a fitting challenge at the Flooring Industry Training Association’s training centre in Loughborough, with judges on hand to check every aspect of their work and select the best of the bunch to compete in the final. The final challenge was spread over the first two days of the show. On the

first day each fitter had to fit a Cormar tufted carpet into a platform with a 30mm inlaid border 100mm from the perimeter of the ‘room’. There was a bullnose step in one corner of the platform, and the border had to be 100mm from this as well, so a curve had to be cut and extra border was needed to allow for the thickness of the stair carpet. On the second day the bullnose step was fitted with a hand-stitched seam. All of this was done surrounded by an audience, with many of the show visitors coming back to check progress again and again. The pressure on the competitors was immense and there was definitely sweat (and a little bit of blood), but fortunately no tears. Jeff Hardy, a winner of the competition back in the 1980s and now retired, together with Ian James and I, were the judges. Deciding who should win was tough, but when all the scores were added up there was a clear winner, Mark

Paul Finch lays down the central panel of his competition platform

Smurthwaite from Cumbria. The other finalists were Darren Ash, Michael Atkinson, Paul Finch, Nick Hood and Byron Terrett. What made the difference between excellent and outstanding? Surprisingly simple things: consistency with the gripper, taping the underlay joins, marking out carefully (‘measure twice, cut once’), vacuuming regularly throughout the fitting and keeping the working area neat so that cut edges were not trampled on and tools did not cause any damage to the carpet or the fitter. The competition will be back next year. If you’re interested, or know someone who could be, register now to be kept informed and to be one of the first to receive an entry form as soon as they’re available. Kayleigh Denton, Protect-A-Bed operations manager, explains: ‘Since the summer we have had continued positive uptake from our retail partners. We have showcased Zefiro at the Manchester Furniture Show, the Irish Furniture and Homewares Show and most recently The South West Furniture Show. Not only has the pillow range and concept been recognised as premium quality, but a quality range that will sell for our retail partners.’ Zefiro is a collection of two pillows – microfibre and memory foam – both created with a patented interactive pocketed coil system and in three different tensions, soft, medium and firm. ‘Pillow preference is highly subjective and personal to the user, with no one pillow being right for all. However, with Zefiro, we have a range of pillows that will present options so every individual could find their perfect pillow. And with Zefiro, I believe we have achieved that,’ says Simon Zamet, Protect-A-Bed ceo. ‘We could

not be happier with the initial success of Zefiro. Providing a platform for retailers to offer a variation of support is a concept that has been welcomed. Customers have really bought into the compelling features and benefits, all framed within Protect-A-Bed’s usual driven sales philosophy,’ says Paul Lake, Protect-A-Bed marketing manager. The spring system comprises 60

pocketed coils to provide interactive, adaptive support. Whether sleeping on your side, back or front, the springs adapt to the sleep position to provide optimal head support and ideal spine alignment. ‘The pocketed coil module also provides an air reservoir that is activated every time you move, causing a pressure change, so that heat and moisture are expelled and fresh, cool air is drawn in, creating a controlled microclimate,’ says Lake. Zamet points out that the spring system is highly resilient and will maintain shape and comfort for far longer than a conventional pillow, so comes with a five-year guarantee. The memory foam pillows have a viscose cover and 2,000 holes castellated into the foam to create a holistic ventilation system. The microfibre pillow has a soft 100% cotton jersey cover. Nigel Hillier, Protect-A-Bed sales agent, comments: ‘After recently demonstrating the Zefiro range at The South West Furniture Show, it is clear retailers recognise pillow sales will grow by offering a complete pillow story, with a clear journey. With Zefiro, consumers can discuss their own personal preferences. The range truly provides a framework for them to choose their perfect pillow with ease and less confusion.’ Visit: www.protectabed.co.uk

It takes pride in offering its customers a wide choice of beautifully designed and styled products and focuses on efficiency, modernisation, and increasing its reputation. The company’s upholstery has always been hand-made. The furniture can be customised to fit a specific space and tailored to suit requirements, including increasing or decreasing the width and depth of the sofas.

In addition to the extensive focus on customer preferences and material quality, there is a range of new product designs. Dalston, with a high arm and high back acting as a ‘cocoon’, encompasses soft, generously filled feather cushions to relax in. Seat cushions are feather filled with a foam core, supported by a serpentine sprung seat and base with a sprung front edge. Mixedscatterback cushions add comfort while supported by the super loop sprung back, as well as providing an opportunity to personalise the look with a mixture of fabrics. Shelby is a refined, architecturally designed corner unit that provides large seating capacity and is available in modular combinations. ‘We have continued to bring new products to market, and improve the quality of the merchandise we are making. But we have also advanced the manufacturing side of the business.

Internally a great deal has changed. We have reduced the amount of space we operate out of in order to increase efficiency and to become more customer orientated. The result of all this is that we now have a higher capacity, and have been able to focus on reducing costs and making the product even more appealing for the market’, says Matt O’Flynn, Collins and Hayes md. Its wood mill has been completely refurbished with a clean supply of electricity and a new extraction system. It is investing in new machinery, and has upgraded IT with a new ERP system. This has provided a more robust and modern platform, making the whole order process more slick with, for example, electronic order acknowledgements and invoices. The company has many plans for the future including a complete revamp of the website, participating in more exhibitions, and increasing exports. Visit: www.collinsandhayes.com

‘Amazing, unique products’ Quality is assured from BFM members ‘In an economic world still coming to terms from the uncertainty of June’s EU referendum vote, “British-made” has never carried such cachet,’ says Jackie Bazeley, BFM md. ‘Quite simply, choosing British reassures consumers and buying British saves jobs. In a world where products from around the globe are readily accessible – both on and offline – it’s worth reminding ourselves why, when it comes to furniture, British is best. The British furniture sector is an amazing, diverse industry that produces products to suit any age, generation, budget or taste.’ There are many reasons for buying British – exceptional standards and craftsmanship, in-depth choice and beautiful traditional or contemporary designs – not to mention the long history of producing some of the best furniture in the world. Bazeley says other key motives include

boosting the economy by supporting the thousands of jobs the industry provides across Britain. And buying ‘home grown’ goods rather than those which have to be transported around the globe has a massive impact on the environment, significantly reducing CO2 emissions. The BFM’s Great British Furniture campaign has been reminding consumers, retailers, contract specifiers, architects and a wider international audience of the benefits of buying British for the past seven years. A number of high profile names have signed up in support, advocating British made furniture with easily identifiable POS material. Only BFM members that produce 75% or more of their products in the UK can join the campaign. ‘Centuries of craftsmanship, know-how and skill go into the manufacture of furniture in Britain where most manufacturers have a strict approach to quality. As a country we can still produce

amazing, unique products of a higher quality workmanship and of a superior finish than many foreign alternatives,’ she says. Thanks to the positive reputation of British-based companies, many thrive because retailers know that dealing with a British company has many advantages, especially when it comes to service. ‘Dealing with a UK producer in control of its own manufacturing and distribution process, usually results in speedier delivery times, smaller carbon footprints and a better aftersales service. When it comes to buying British furniture from BFM members, both trade and consumer buyers can be reassured that the most rigorous standards, in health and safety control, flammability and environmental management, have been met,’ adds Bazeley. Made with pride in Lancashire Consumers favour British manufacturing Rest Assured has been making mattresses since 1898, and the company prides itself on making pocket sprung mattresses to the highest standards using the finest materials. ‘British manufacturing is high on our consumers’ agenda, and this is reinforced with the new British Wool collection. Not only are the beds and mattresses made with pride in Lancashire, we are using high quality wool which has been selected from British farms in conjunction with the specialist input from the British Wool Marketing Board,’ says Nick Booth, Rest Assured marketing director. ‘The new collection went down a storm at the recent AIS and Telford bed shows, with many retailers commenting on how this was not only the best collection from Rest Assured for years but for some the most exciting development overall at the shows,’ he says. The British Wool collection will be rolled out to retailers in November and the made in Britain message will be displayed loud and proud. There is a choice of three pocket spring mattresses offering softer, medium or firmer comfort. Each mattress features three layers of wool, including British Cheviot wool, selected for its springiness and durability. Mattresses are double sided for longer lasting comfort and traditionally tufted. The zoned pocket spring unit offers tailored support to ensure a comfortable night’s sleep. ‘Wool is such a fantastic natural, renewable resource, and British Cheviot wool really is perfect for this collection of mattresses, being naturally springy and highly durable and from sheep found in the countryside on the border of Scotland and England. It is a soft yet sturdy fibre that gives both body and bounce to the mattress and is extremely resilient,’ says Tim Booth, British Wool marketing manager. ‘All of the British Wool collection mattresses have been carefully crafted to deliver superb comfort and have been designed to work in perfect harmony with the British Wool collection sprung divan bases. They have premium silver ball castors and can be upholstered in a choice of six stunning woolfeel fabrics. There are various storage options to select from to help the consumer to make the most of the space they have in their bedroom,’ adds Rest Assured’s Booth. Visit: www.rest-assured.co.uk

Platform for UK businesses The January Furniture Show promotes home-grown companies Flying the flag for Britain, The January Furniture Show 2017 will be the place to be for those in the furniture and furnishings industry wanting to see the best of British designs. Celebrating a booming British furniture manufacturing trade – which according to the BFM, is worth £6.5bn – the show will offer visitors the first opportunity to see up and coming trends in Britishmade designs. ‘Buying British has been hugely emphasised over the past decade along with promoting home-grown businesses. We’re pleased to see that the January Furniture Show has become a solid platform for those companies to highlight their products and designs to national and international buyers,’ says Laraine Janes, January Furniture Show director. Among more than 400 exhibitors are British manufacturers including Ashley Manor, Ashwood, Buoyant Upholstery, Celebrity, Cintique, Collins and Hayes, Duresta, Ercol, G Plan, Lebus, Nathan, Parker Knoll, Tetrad, Wade Upholstery, Westbridge Furniture Designs, Whitemeadow, and Wood Bros. Nick Garratt, Ercol md, says: ‘The key industry theme moving into next year will be the weakness of sterling and increased factory input prices putting pressure on margins. This is likely to feed through to

Whitemeadow’s Bossanova

selling prices. A slowing housing market may work to our benefit if consumers focus more on upgrading and improving their homes. We will be stepping up the rate of new design and new product introduction, and we are working on a range of new themes for next year.’ According to Buoyant, one of the biggest changes in the industry is that consumers have massively increased expectations of better value for money, shorter lead times and more choice. Accommodating these demands, the company will showcase its designs in a multitude of sizes and shapes alongside storage, beds and motion. As the Parker Knoll brand grows, it remains committed to designing and developing collections in line with the changing marketplace and latest consumer trends. It will be launching a collection ‘honing in on its commitment to continuous innovation, and market leading design’. Collins and Hayes is introducing designs with the emphasis on comfort and a natural fibre fabric collection. Best spec and keen prices Sweet Dreams aims to provide value

Left: Royal Pillowtop Marquis 2000 with Tencel cover Below: Sandringham 4000 Pocket Air Bottom: Degas upholstered frame

Sweet Dreams is known for its extensive range of British-made divans to suit all tastes and pockets, and Interiors Monthly readers voted it Best Bed Manufacturer (Value) earlier this year. ‘We have always endeavoured to provide the very best specifications for the keenest prices,’ explains Jackie McGarvey, Sweet Dreams general manager. ‘The award, together with rapidly increasing sales, proves that we’re achieving our aims and we’d like to thank all those who voted for us.’ At the recent Bed Show it displayed a host of additions to its collections. Four divans were added to the top end Royal Pillowtop collection. The pocket spring divans feature box-style pillowtops for style, comfort and practicality that don’t contain springs, but instead benefit from luxury fillings and covers. Marquis, for example, features micro-quilting and a luxury soft Tencel cover and has a 24mm layer of latex to the full sleeping surface. Like all the beds in the range, Marquis comes in three sizes and various storage options including three types of ottoman. Goldcoloured shepherd castors and bumper bars are elements of the quality finishing. The Pocket Air collection, which features alternate rows of shortened springs to offer a ‘lighter-than-air sleep sensation’ and spring counts of 3,000 and 4,000 was refreshed. Modern covers feature Tencel and linen, with micro-

quilting and fillings including wool, cashmere and silk. A number of models such as Sandringham offer a damask border in two colours and all bases can be in wheat and grey. Beds are in three sizes with full storage options. Chrome

castors and piping finish the look. All the new divans as well as the latest bedroom, sofabeds and British-made upholstery are featured in the new Sweet Dreams brochure. Visit: www.sweetdreamsuk.com

Listening to staff has helped a turnaround

For the past 100 years Myer’s Beds has had a long service roll: to be included on it you have to at least match founder Horatio Myer’s 40 years, which ended in 1916. On the three framed lists generations of employees can be traced who between them worked at the company for decades and decades: if you wanted a job it helped if you had a relative working there. When Steinhoff bought the UK operations of Hilding Anders three years ago (Myer’s, Slumberland, Staples and Dunlopillo) the certificates were found at the Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire factory abandoned in a box. When the factory, which opened in 1962, was given a much needed refurbishment they were put in pride of place outside the updated showroom. You might think such long service records are a thing of the past. If so you would be wrong, and they help to explain the turnaround in the fortunes of the factory. From losing £4.5m a year to making a seven figure profit has, among

38

Interiors Monthly October 2016

other things, been built on heeding the knowledge of some of its longest-serving employees. Eddy Bedford works in the springs department and has been with Myer’s for 45 years. Jenny Phelps joined the company when she left school in 1989 and is quilt shop section manager. Gordon Jones worked in the quilt shop for 30 years and has been in the stores department for the past eight years. John Cornhill is health and safety officer and has over 30 years’ service. Bill Davies has been with the business for 47 years: ‘I joined the business because my dad, my grandfather and great grandfather all worked here and I am very proud to say they worked for the company for 38, 51 and 55 years respectively. This means I only have four years left to match my grandfather’s service. My grandfather started working for the company in 1882,’ says Davies. ‘I’ve worked in every department from tape edging, side stitching and spring

assembly to divan construction where I spent most of my working life. I am now part of the two-man delivery team and help to set up exhibitions, photo shoots and in-store displays, which I really enjoy. ‘When the business was bought by Steinhoff, the atmosphere changed quickly to a positive one, but the damage was deep to our facility and to our reputation. We needed something to change and we needed it to happen quickly. Over the past three years it was touch and go because we continued to lose money and everyone feared the worst for their jobs and pensions. But to its credit Steinhoff stuck with it and we are all so very pleased that the business is back on track. ‘We have new machinery, fantastic new trucks, more job security, but most of all our pensions are safe, which is the biggest thing for me. I have given my best years to this company and the thought of losing it was just frightening. It is a fear you can only understand if you have experienced it. ‘Now, the atmosphere is brilliant and while we cannot play cricket in the car park like we did in the 1980s, I am very pleased that the business is back to its very best. I met my wife at Myer’s and it means so much to me and my family’s legacy that it has survived.’ Visit: www.myersbeds.co.uk

Amtico has expanded Signature while Aspecta has a new UK distributor Amtico has added to its Signature collection with the introduction of Kura to the Stone range. A palette of seven shades is available ranging from chalky taupe tones to amethyst and onyx. ‘Kura has been carefully curated to reflect both customer demands and changing interior trends,’ says Kelly Alders, Amtico senior designer. Kura’s ceramic-like textures vary from smooth to organic, combining and balancing to create versatile products that work together. It is ideal for large scale projects, while juxtaposing the tonal variants – especially light and dark shades – can make for an eye-catching impact, especially when incorporated into an on-trend laying pattern. Amtico has added more than 30 colours to Signature this year, increasing the offer to 163. Meanwhile, Aspecta has named Chroma Global Flooring Solutions as its new UK distributor, adding Aspecta’s three ranges of LVT to its portfolio. ‘The Chroma team provides interior designers, architects and clients with the best and most appropriate flooring

Shopfloor imagination A new charity store opted for Karndean Opening its flagship charity store, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People looked to Karndean Designflooring for a striking and engaging floor design. Rainbows and design agency officeTwelve specified Karndean’s Van Gogh Wood and new Kaleidoscope at its 860sqft store, in Cattle Market, Loughborough, Leicestershire to fulfil its bright and modern interior design scheme. Installed by Bradbury Flooring, the completed store features the delicate oak grains and chalky cool washed finish of Van Gogh White Washed Oak throughout the clothing and homeware section, and Kaleidoscope Tripoint in a dedicated children’s area as a standalone rug effect. ‘We’re absolutely thrilled with the finished look, and having our Karndean floor to capture the imagination of our customers will certainly encourage them to browse for longer,’ says Kate Golding, Rainbows head of organisational giving. ‘It was essential for us to stand out from our competitors, and at the same time create a wow environment for our first flagship space. Rather than adding lots of obvious bright colours, we looked to add geometric shapes with Kaleidoscope Tripoint and a contrasting statement orange wall for opulence and sophistication. With high traffic expected, we’re confident

our floor will stand the test of time and accommodate our growing customer base.’ Founded in 1994, Rainbows provides support for over 350 children and young people and their families throughout Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Rutland, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire. Kaleidoscope offers flexibility for independent retailers looking to create a unique floor design. The collection contains six standard designs including popular shapes and patterns, such as hexagons, chevrons and cubes, that can be cut in a number of colour combinations across Karndean’s established wood and stone designs. It also introduces block colourways, giving consumers the option to choose bright colours against wood and stone for added visual interest in the home. ‘It’s been fantastic to work with Rainbows and support such a worthwhile cause in creating a bespoke Kaleidoscope floor. All the money raised at the Loughborough store will enable the charity to keep making a difference, and help the charity continue to support children and young people with lifelimiting conditions in the East Midlands,’ says Scott Cochrane, Karndean Designflooring sales director. Springcore has a four-year guarantee, along with its Encore Feather and Fibre ranges

The Textile Growth Programme has helped Fibreline transform its manufacturing

Springs can be located anywhere in the foam core

Springing ahead EU funding has helped Fibreline with its innovations Fibreline has long been at the forefront of new technology in cushion development and now on the factory floor. Its latest cushion innovation is Springcore. Small pocket springs are inserted into a shaped foam core. Spring foam cushions can now be made in almost any shape or size but without the noise of springs moving against each other. ‘Springcore has a solid foam core with no vertical joins. Its individual pocket springs work independently with no noise. The holes/springs can be located in any position within the foam core and

46

Interiors Monthly October 2016

it has the ability to accommodate any size or shape of cushion,’ says Richard Prudhoe, Fibreline md. ‘It also has a low flat profile much requested for some of today’s retro styles and along with the Encore Feather and Fibre range it comes with a full four-year guarantee against sagging.’ Over recent years Fibreline has developed a wider and more innovative product range to differentiate itself from the competition. The success of this approach has been significantly helped by support from the Textile Growth Programme. The TGP is an EU Regional

Development Fund project focused on creating and safeguarding jobs in the textile industry through a grant scheme – supporting capital projects, skills training and research and development. Some of the areas where support can be provided include: soft furnishings; carpet; technical textiles; cut, make and trim; and weaving and dyeing. TGP helped Fibreline in the refurbishment of a building into a modern warehousing and distribution operation, with automated material handling for the transfer of finished product from the main factory. TGP also helped fund installation of mezzanine flooring to create additional production space, doubling of internal cutting and sewing facilities enabling reshoring of supply from Asia, along with modern feather cushion filling equipment. TGP funding has also helped push the boundaries of technology within the business, helping it to be the first in the industry to use collaborative robots working alongside production personnel. ‘TGP funding has helped the business grow and develop. Our workforce has grown, both in terms of numbers of people and also in their skill levels, as we have introduced new products and production processes. The task is never finished but TGP has helped us along the road and put us in a good position to face the challenges of the future,’ says Prudhoe. Visit: www.fibreline-ltd.co.uk

MoOD & Indigo Brussels

REVIEW

Home run The show’s new location proved to be a winner MoOD & Indigo Brussels’ move to the Tour & Taxis venue turned out to be a hit, creating the boutique show organisers had hoped for. The urban venue involved a new stand concept: smaller and more uniform. ‘Change is taking risks. It is part of entrepreneurship. And we were aware of that, but we went all in and created opportunities. We still had to convince a lot of companies to accept this change. But the reactions were already very positive during construction. The “boutique” character we had envisioned was profoundly apparent, and the visitors also felt right at home,’ says Patrick Geysels, md. There were 4,020 visitors, with 80% from Europe. Initial results from half of the 230 exhibitors saw 76% give a score of 7/10 for the venue and 70% gave a positive evaluation concerning the quality of the visitors: 7/10 or higher. This year the offer was more focused, as seen in the Blue Drop selection and awards. Niek De Prest, trend coach and one of the judges, says: ‘The entries were stronger than previous years. Exhibitors sent in less fabrics, but they were obviously of a higher level. The jury was unanimous about the nomination of the award winners. Creativity and technicity, two priorities for the selection, turned out to be quite complementary this year. Noteworthy trends are heavier fabrics and more focused collections. ‘The exhibitors were more successful in creating a uniform image of their collections. Such focus can only be encouraged,’ he adds. The Launch Pad selection of young designers doubled in size compared to last year’s debut event. Next year’s show will again take place on 6-8 September. Visit: www.moodbrussels.com

Interiors Monthly October 2016

The show will see new exhibitors among its well organised layout The Brussels Furniture Fair is divided into six segments that have evolved with the spirit of the times – City, Brussels by Night, Square, Kids’ Corner, Fusion, Mosaic and Holland à la Carte. This clear organisation makes it possible to visit the exhibition efficiently and obtain an immediate overview. City presents contemporary furniture and seating, taking in halls 3, 4 and 5. This is the largest segment at the show and both major players and smaller niche producers from Belgium and abroad will be there. Mosaic is the collective name for colourful, multi-faceted collections at basic prices, to be found in hall 9. It’s all atmosphere and animation at Fusion in hall 8: rustic and romantic collections with the addition of decoration and attractive home accessories. Holland à la Carte in the Patio will have a new look. This platform for Dutch manufacturers will, among others, present BKS, Carpet Creations, Cartel Living, Chita, De Kussenfabriek, HE Design, Jamé, Jess Design, Kluskens, Leclercq & Bouwman, Nouvion, Spinder Design, Sumisura and Ztahl by Dijkos. Just like last year, several Dutch exhibitors are grouped around their own bar under the heading ‘Brussels Lifestyle’: Richmond Interiors, Eleonora, NixDesign/PMP, DTP, Vermeer, Mattzz and Sevn will be making a party of it. The other Dutch stalwarts include Maxfurn, Bodilson, Nijwie, RV Design and Ruby Fires, as well as newcomers Hoogendam, PTMD, Quality Oak Furniture, European Furniture and Periglass. And this year they will be joined by Tetrad. Among the companies making their debut or returning after an absence include: Willi Schillig, K+W, Ada, Calligaris, Nardi Interni, Orme, Status, Skovby, Elsach, Confortluxe, Chairz Classo, Rousseau, Lee & Lewis, Foda and Monte. It’s now a retailer that is consistently producing great figures, improved its branding and is set to expand further,’ said the judges. Sound Sleep in Diss, Norfolk, was runner-up. Fighting against a quiet location, it has gone to great lengths to become a Silentnight Sleep Centre and had great marketing initiatives to show year on year sales growth. The new Judges’ Choice award went to Dreams. The award, based on one outstanding element, was given in recognition of the company’s multimillion pound ‘Replace Every Eight’ marketing campaign which has not only increased like for like performance and changed consumer perception, but has

also benefited the whole industry. Kaymed UK was named Bed Manufacturer of the Year. It was praised for its winning strategy of product innovation, substantial marketing investment and impressive sales results across a range of retail customers. Runner up in this hotly contested category was Steinhoff Bedding Group. Turning around a loss-making facility into a seven figure net profit, this business has placed great emphasis on investment in new fleet and warehousing, training employees and driving sales points upwards.
