EDITOR’S COMMENT

Andrew Kidd EDITOR

Transparency for all Sealy’s decision to list what it puts into its mattresses should encourage everyone else to follow suit Often it’s the simplest idea that makes you think ‘brilliant, why didn’t anyone do that before?’ And so it is with Sealy’s decision to list the construction of its mattresses online. Not just saying model XYZ contains Geltex, but there is a 4cm layer of it, for example. Amid the ongoing concerns over rogue bed sales (the National Bed Federation has produced some excellent animations highlighting the issue) it is cheering to see Sealy’s move. As it says ‘we hope it works to drive transparency and innovation across the board, with other like-minded manufacturers following suit. After all, if you have nothing to hide then there should be complete and total product disclosure.’ Anybody want to buy Multiyork or Feather

& Black? No, not a sofa or a bed, but the chains, which have been put up for sale as Charles Wade contemplates retirement (not something I thought I’d ever write). Things seem to be looking up for the chains after years of losses. Both returned to profit last year for the first time since 2010, after losing a combined £20m between 2010 and 2015, and trading is said to be ‘ahead of the market and last year’. It’ll be interesting to see if there is consolidation, a newcomer taking control, or if they remain part of Wade Group. There was a real buzz at The Flooring Show and the Bed Show last month. At Harrogate there was positivity from suppliers with many confirming an upturn after a weak (to put it politely) summer. (Adam Faver, ATR Flooring Services, Barnsley was the winner of the Interiors Monthly subscription prize draw at the show.) At Telford bed retailers were out in force keeping order books filled. The Carpet Foundation is returning to consumer marketing with a year-long campaign in the home interest press. Some might say it’s about time, but it is to be welcomed and shows it has sorted its finances.

Ward Brothers, Fishpools and Glasswells win AIS honours

There are 48 Multiyork stores plus three outlet stores

Multiyork and Feather & Black put up for sale Upholstery retailer Multiyork and bedroom chain Feather & Black have been put up for sale. The decision comes after Charles Wade, who is 68, chairman of parent Wade Group, said he was looking to retire. ‘The board is committed to finding a partner that will invest in both businesses to take them forward. During this process, business continues as usual with all directors of Multiyork and Feather & Black focused on delivering sales which continue to be ahead of the market for both brands,’ he said.

Multiyork made a pre-tax profit of £479,000 in the year to 2 October 2016, its first profit since 2010, when it made £650,000. Between the profitable years it lost £11.72m. Sales rose by 5.5% to £50.43m. It has 48 main branches and three outlet stores. In the year to 2 October 2016, Feather & Black saw a pre-tax loss of £3.63m become a profit of £204,000: its first profit since 2010. Sales rose by £527,000 to £23.175m in the period. Between the profitable years it lost £8.62m. There are 25 Feather & Black branches.

The AIS Member of the Year award for the larger turnover group of retailers was again divided into single store and multiple store retailers. Multiple store winner was Glasswells, in its 70th anniversary year, with Alan Ward taking second place and Sterling Furniture third. In the single store category Fishpools was the winner, with Roomes second and Housing Units third. In the smaller turnover group, Doncaster retailer Ward Brothers was revealed as the winner in its first year as an AIS member, ahead of Eyres of Chesterfield in second and Beadle Crome Interiors third. For the fifth time in six years AIS members voted Alstons Upholstery as Upholstery Supplier of the Year. Parker Knoll was second and Celebrity third. In the cabinet category Baker Furniture came out top, with Classic Furniture second and TCH third. The group also announced its 2017 Gold Standard winners. The upholstery winners were: Alstons Upholstery; Ashwood Designs; Celebrity; Daro; Duresta; G-Plan Upholstery; Himolla; Parker Knoll; Sherborne and Yeoman Upholstery. Cabinet winners were: Andrena; Baker Furniture; Classic Furniture; TCH Furniture; UK-CF; Unique Furniture and Venjakob.

Eve cuts mattress return rate to 13% Online mattress retailer Eve Sleep has managed to reduce the return rate through its 100-day guarantee amid increasing brand recognition. Returns fell from 18% to 13% in the six months to 30 June. It was 15% in May. The cost of customer acquisition decreased by 11.4% to £210, but is still more than double that of its ‘medium term’ target of £100. Unprompted brand awareness rose from 0.5% to 4.1% as marketing

increased, and it says it is now the eighth most recognised mattress brand in the UK. Repeat orders now make up 13.2% of UK sales, up from 9.1%. UK sales rose from £3m to £6.3m and overseas sales increased from £2.1m to £5.2m. Underlying losses were £6.9m, up from £3.2m. ‘We are a young company with much to prove in the £26bn European sleep market. While the broader furniture

market, including mattresses, has been slow to transition to online purchase, the pace of change is now starting to accelerate,’ said Jas Bagniewski, Eve ceo. ‘The combination of our compelling customer proposition, digital expertise and brand strength, combined with our scalable low cost business model, gives me confidence that we will win out over traditional and new operators,’ said Bagniewski.

Dunelm encouraged by summer sales growth

Heal’s is to open in Mailbox

Midlands stores for Made.com and Heal’s

Heal’s and Made.com will be among the interiors retailers to open at Birmingham shopping centre Mailbox, with their first Midlands stores. The centre is opening a 20,000sqft homewares section at the end of this month. Among others joining them will be BoConcept, Calligaris and lighting retailer iLite. ‘Our Mailbox showroom will offer the finest in furniture design from Heal’s as well as internationally recognised designers and brands. The shop itself will be a unique retail space that will bring the best of our online offering to Birmingham,’ said Hamish Mansbridge, Heal’s ceo. ‘Birmingham is now recognised as one of the top shopping destinations in the UK, so Birmingham City Centre and the Mailbox are the perfect platform for Heal’s to promote its premium retail offering within a hugely popular lifestyle location which is well accessible to the wider Midlands region and its incoming visitors.’ Annabel Kilner, Made.com commercial director, said: ‘Having seen great promise from the Made.com Birmingham pop-up, we are delighted with our showroom in the Mailbox. Birmingham is an important city for Made.com and we’re keen to see the impact the bigger location will have on sales.’ Meanwhile, BoConcept opened a franchise outlet, and its 14th store, in Canterbury on 28 September. ‘As a chartered surveyor I have always loved great design and enjoyed working on exciting projects. The opportunity to be the new franchisee of BoConcept in Canterbury feels like a natural move towards interiors… who better to collaborate with than the iconic Danish design brand, BoConcept,’ said Rachel Sanders, franchisee.

Dunelm enjoyed sales growth in July and August after dipping in the previous full year. ‘Sales in the first two months of the new financial year have started positively, with good like for like sales boosted by favourable weather comparatives. We expect to open a total of eight new stores in the first half of the year of which four are already open. An encouraging start. We expect the trading climate to remain challenging with the disposable income of UK consumers under pressure,’ said Andy Harrison, Dunelm chairman. ‘We aim to be the number one choice for homewares and furniture in the UK. The acquisition of Worldstores represents a big leap forward in our online scale and capability, together with a substantial expansion of our online product offering, especially in furniture. There is still much to do to integrate fully this acquisition and to deliver its benefits, but the progress so far is very encouraging,’ he said. Over the medium-term Dunelm aims to double sales to £2bn, with 30%-40% from online. In the year to 1 July sales increased by 8.5% to £955.6m, with £54.5m from Worldstores. Like for like sales dropped by 0.5% but online grew by 23.5%. Underlying profits fell by 15.2% to £109.3m, largely due to Worldstores’ anticipated losses and increased investment.

Management changes Bed manufacturer Breasley has restructured its management following the retirement of Stuart Hibbert, Breasley Consumer Division md. Hibbert owned half of BCD and has sold his shares to the Breasley Group owned by the Crowshaw family. Darren and Mike Crowshaw have become joint group mds with their father, Alan, becoming ceo. Darren is heading up the sales division and Mike will be responsible for operations. Mark Hughes remains as BCD sales director. ‘Mike and I have been involved with Breasley Consumer since day one and the very first vacuum packed mattress that rolled off the production line some 12 years ago. It is amazing to see how the business has grown under Stuart’s leadership but with the support of the team around us we are very much up for the challenge of emulating his hard work and success. On an operational level nothing has changed, so business will continue to run as usual,’ said Darren.

Silentnight TV comeback Silentnight has returned to TV advertising after a seven year absence. The bed manufacturer is running 30 second advertisements during October on the Granada area of ITV, with plans to roll out the campaign to other areas in 2018. The TV campaign will be supported by an eight week Press campaign from 25 September, with titles including Metro, The Times, Daily Mail, Daily Express and Daily Telegraph. Social media, PR and online activity will also be included in the campaign.

Carpet Foundation returns to consumer marketing

The first advertorial covering the benefits of buying from Carpet Foundation members

people

The Carpet Foundation is to resume consumer advertising over the next year. It has booked a 12 month programme of one-page advertorials in leading home interest magazines. The campaign will address key consumer issues such as carpet and health, underfloor heating and the benefits of buying from independent retailers. Magazines include Country Homes & Interiors, Ideal Home, Your Home, Homes & Antiques and The English Home. The first advertorial is in the November issue of Country Homes & Interiors, a title with a circulation of over 70,000. It will focus on the benefits of buying from Carpet Foundation members. This will be followed by a page in the December issue of Ideal Home, the UK’s biggest selling home interest magazine, which will address carpet and asthma.

Upholstery and bedroom retailer Loaf has hired Neil Barley, former Boden director of merchandise planning and systems executive as coo.

Cormar Carpets has promoted three of its senior managers to directors. Operating group heads Paul Murphy, Craig Marshall and Chris Isaacs (pictured left to right) now hold the positions of manufacturing director, sales order channels and logistics director, and sales director respectively. Two sales representatives have been appointed, Colin Adlam covering Greater Manchester and Merseyside and Ryan Johnson Cheshire.

consumer promotion,’ said Andrew Stanbridge, Carpet Foundation chief executive. ‘The campaign deliberately sets out to tackle some of the major issues facing consumers when they buy carpet. From the calls we get at our office, we know what concerns consumers and with manufacturers all stressing the wonders and benefits of carpet on their websites and in their promotional literature we don’t need to do that. ‘I am sure our members will be pleased with what they see. We will merchandise everything back to them in newsletters and, if we can, point of sale. ‘Tackling major consumer issues marks a significant departure for the Carpet Foundation but illustrates our standing in the market and no one else is in a position to independently comment like us,’ added Stanbridge.

PET bedding Bedding manufacturer Trendsetter International has introduced a range of duvets and pillows using recycled PET bottles for fibres, which it says mimics its Nimbus brand ‘highest grade feather and down products in every way.’ The company says its Smartdown fibres ‘emulate the decadence, sensation and properties of 100% goose down.’ During production, the fibres are handled just like down, blown into each cassette for even distribution and loft. Using PET cuts energy use by 66% and CO2 emissions by 54%. ‘Luxury products are one of the biggest categories for growth in UK retail, and consumer demand for brands with a strong CSR message is equally sought after by environmentally aware consumers. We’ve responded with a truly luxurious range that doesn’t cost the earth, literally,’ said Helen Johnson, marketing manager.

A matter of comfort Selling the right products is key The mattress looked lumpy. There was a distinct hollow on each side with a ridge down the middle. Was this the cause of Mrs G’s sleepless nights? John, from the shop, didn’t know, but he also didn’t know how to find out. He’d set the mattress out on a couple of pallets to make my job easier, he’d said, but I suspect it was also to enable him to watch carefully so he knew what to do in the future. In the corner of the warehouse were two more of the same mattress. ‘It’s always these expensive ones,’ said John. ‘We don’t get complaints about cheaper mattresses. I’ve put the worst one out, there must be 4cm-5cm of settlement.’ I laid my spirit level on the bed, head to foot. I carry a 2m level for testing the flatness of floors, but it comes in useful for other things from time to time. If I don’t have it with me I use a piece of string with tensioning weights at each end to give me a reference line for measuring, but the level seems to give

watching customers a better impression. I moved the level and took more measurements at different places, then turned it to run from side to side and did the same. The biggest ‘dip’ was 12mm. The ‘ridge’ between the two sides had simply not compressed, it was not any higher than the sides of the mattress. I felt along the side for the top edge of the spring unit and measured again: 5cm of fillings, so about 25% settlement. Finally I poked, prodded, bounced and rolled to check for broken springs, uneven resilience and clumping of the fillings. Everything was fine. There was only one thing I could not check. Was the bed comfortable? My opinion on this would not make any difference. If Mrs G did not find it comfortable she would never be happy with it, and she would rather blame the mattress than admit she had made the wrong choice. John confessed that he’d taken the easy route and collected the mattresses

from customers who had complained because he didn’t know how to convince them they were not faulty. He appreciated the demonstration of how to do an inspection, but the mattresses in his warehouse were not going anywhere. Inspecting a bed is quite simple. Springs, fillings and fabrics can be checked and measured, as can castors, bases and other components. But resolving a customer’s dissatisfaction with something less tangible – comfort – is considerably more difficult. A professional inspection may help, but the real key to handling a complaint like this is in the selling process. If what you sell is right for the customer they’ll be happy. If not, you’ll probably end up with a list of unhappy customers, or a corner of your warehouse stacked with returns and a dent in your margins. Following the success of its partnership with Steinhoff UK and the Bensons for Beds store format, je+1 was asked to create a store concept for Harveys. The brief for the 2013 concept was to introduce a backdrop for its existing range that was aspirational and accentuated the quality and value of the product. As part of continuous development of the concept and its various store formats, je+1 has recently been working with Harveys again to create four distinct collections in-store: Moda, Sofas by You, Bay Leather Republic and At Home.

26

Interiors Monthly October 2017

Swatches are used to merchandise the store

The collections were introduced to represent customer lifestyle types with zones designed to reflect and communicate this aesthetically. Areas were created to provide clear identities for each collection that work together to help navigate customers through choice of design, material and function. With the new collections being integral to the Harveys’ brand, je+1 wanted to introduce this to customers and tell the collections’ stories. Four capsule displays were created and merchandised around a large digital

display which supports each collection and helps communicate to the customer. For the store’s most unique collection, Sofas by You, je+1 wanted to provide an in-store experience that communicated the collection’s brand story as the hero proposition. The Sofas by You collection is a customisable range that customers can interact with and create their ideal sofa from a selection of shapes, sizes and finishes. Within the department designs can be created from a display of styles and fabrics while browsing popular combinations that are available. ‚‚‚

The format includes an area that promotes the idea of design and encourages customers to interact with it. Secondary areas are used to allow customers to interact with their chosen finishes, to view their personal combinations and configure ideas digitally. ‚‚‚ Dining is displayed alongside upholstery

Seek specialist legal advice before registering designs

Prepare for attacks Top tips for protecting designs from copyright infringement Renowned for its craftsmanship and design savvy presentation, British furniture is regarded as among the best in the world, but how can it be protected from copycat products? A recent design and intellectual property seminar run by the British Furniture Manufacturers for its members, highlighted a number of options for protecting furniture designs. ‘Our update event looked at best practice on design and brand attacks, terms and conditions for customers and suppliers as well as what to do if someone copies your designs, plus how to maximise the value of your registered rights, all of which are critical to the smooth running of a business,’ says Simon Clark, partner at London law firm Bristows and a specialist in IP law, including copyright and design rights, patents, trade marks, passing

34

off and breach of confidence. These are Clark’s 10 top tips for those looking to protect their goods in Britain: Applying for Community Registered Designs remains the cheapest and most effective form of protection for furniture designs. Bear in mind that images included in the registration of a product can make the difference between winning and losing a subsequent dispute, so specialist legal advice should be sought prior to filing. Protection can be obtained for parts of designs as well as a whole design. You can apply to register your bestselling designs in one application within 12 months of their launch. Copyright law changed this year which may well mean more classic furniture designs are now protected from copying which weren’t before.

1 2 3 4 5

Even without a design registration, strong protection can arise automatically through unregistered design rights (UK only or EU-wide). How similar a design needs to be to infringe copyright varies, depending on the nature of the design, how common it is, and the amount of design freedom available to the designer. Being able to produce documentary evidence of your design history is crucial both for bringing and defending a copying claim. Being able to show that you own the rights in designs created by your employees, freelance contractors and manufacturers is essential. Many more designs will be protected by some form of right than you may think. Visit: www.bfm.org.uk

Amtico’s stand included a kitchen area while it introduced a new Spacia POS stand

Great reception Amtico’s The Flooring Show comeback

The Corona Mono design from Amtico Décor was used in the hall area

Amtico returned to The Flooring Show with an exclusive preview of its new designs. Garnering huge amounts of praise, the stand and new products were greatly received by the more than 3,000 visitors in attendance, with a record number of POS stands sold during the event, according to the company. The stand design showcased Amtico’s product versatility and suitability for a number of flooring needs. In the kitchen were new laying patterns from the brand’s flagship Designers’ Choice collection, including Castel Weave, French Weave and Muralist, while the bedroom and bathroom featured recently launched Form. The hallway was designed to create a lasting first impression, with the striking Corona Mono design from

Amtico Décor chosen to demonstrate what can be achieved with LVT. New Spacia designs were previewed, with the addition of 12 woods, four stones and 13 abstracts displayed on a new Spacia POS stand, which will be seen in retailers from January. ‘We are incredibly proud of the new collections that the Amtico team has developed, and The Flooring Show was the ideal place to show them off. We have been overwhelmed with the response so far, and we are sure the new Spacia collection in particular will be a huge success,’ says Danny Hugo, Amtico head of UK residential sales and UK sales operations. Bed Show Telford

REVIEW John Cotton Group, Bed Component Supplier of the Year

Duvalay, Bed Manufacturer of the Year under £10m turnover

Judges’ Choice: BekaertDeslee

Champions league Winners and runners-up in this year’s Bed Show Awards Bensons for Beds and Prestige Beds were named as Bed Retailers of the Year at the Bed Show Awards. The awards were announced by actress Meera Syal at the Bed Show’s Gala Dinner at the Telford International Centre, attended by more than 500 people. Bensons won the over £5m beds turnover category. Its megastore concept has continued to roll out across the country and this year has seen the introduction of Design Centres, offering customers access to interiors specialists to help them design their ideal bedroom space. More than 1,000 sales staff have also completed additional independently accredited sleep training. In the over £5m turnover category Archers Sleepcentre and Leekes were runners-up. With a trademarked brand, investment in software, staff training, store refurbishment programme and new initiatives, Archers Sleepcentre was praised for its move away from a

68

discount, ‘beds to take away today’ business model to embrace a much deeper bed specialist approach. Leekes has opened new-look mini sleep centres, introduced new ranges, developed improved, benefit-focused POS, invested in extra training, and provides all sales staff with tablets so they can access specification sheets, videos, buying guides and links to useful websites. Preston retailer Prestige Beds scooped the under £5m beds turnover category. The company has reinvented itself over the past 12 months to push business growth, engage with new customers and improve the customer experience through in depth market research, refurbished stores and better staff training. It has also invested in increasing its online presence and deploying smartphone technology on POS, all of which has led to a massive increase in online reviews, greater in-store conversion rates, increases in turnover and better sales margins.

Burley in Wharfedale retailer The Carriage was runner-up. It took over an ailing business, with no retail or bed industry experience, and turned it into a profitable business that has seen turnover treble in the first 15 months while maintaining healthy gross profit margins. Hypnos won the Bed Manufacturer of the Year over £10m category. It was praised by the judges for continuing to strengthen and build on its domestic and export business in both the hospitality and retail sectors, securing approved supplier status with six international hotel chains, appointing new distributors and agents in Spain, Benelux, South Africa and Germany, and winning a Queen’s Award for Enterprise. Highgrove Beds and Harrison Spinks were runners-up. The judges felt Highgrove Beds deserved recognition for its recent successful growth strategy and the three distinct brands that have been created in the past year to cover the value, ‚‚‚

Duvalay took the Bed Manufacturer of the Year under £10m category. Colour Passage: the nicest, most surprising, best colour setting in a collection or a product. Winner: Teksko Kadife Kumas. The colour award goes to a fabric that uses only one colour. It may seem a little awkward, but the jury chose this fabric for the way the colour changes according to the play of light in the yarns. One colour became many colours.
