EDITOR’S COMMENT
Andrew Kidd EDITOR
A memorable year The past year has been dominated by major deals as consolidation gathered pace in the industry and, of course, that vote. If 2016 proved anything it was that there were plenty of companies confident enough about the future of the interiors sector to invest in it. And not small investments, major ones. In no particular order: Clarion bought January Furniture Show and Manchester Furniture Show; Argos became part of Sainsbury’s after Steinhoff decided to focus on France (and then Poundland); Homebase was bought by Westfarmers, which began rebranding it as Bunnings; Westfield parent Belfield Furnishings was sold to its management and NorthEdge Capital; WesleyBarrell parent Wessex Bristol bought Collins and Hayes; Alstons parent TCMC bought Ashley Manor; H Dawson Wool snapped up Axminster Carpets; Walker Greenback bought

Clarke & Clarke; and Victoria (where would a list of takeovers be without it) bought Ezi Floor. Millions were also invested in retail expansion: Tapi continued to roll out new stores and Carpetright responded by investing £10m in its latest store format. Barker and Stonehouse continued (and is continuing) its expansion in the south of England while Furniture Village did the same in the north, for example. All this was in the run up to and after the European Union referendum vote, which slowed retail sales before 23 June as shoppers hung on to their money to see what would happen, but doesn’t seem to have had much effect since the Brexit result. The impact on exchange rates that followed the vote to leave had an immediate effect, with overseas suppliers implementing price increases, which we are likely to see more of in 2017 as hedging positions unwind. As most large-ticket interiors purchases are infrequent, consumers don’t really know what a price could be, just what they find when they are looking. But certain price points are likely to disappear in 2017. From everyone at Interiors Monthly, have a merry Christmas and a happy winter sale.

NEWS
Clarion buys JFS and MFS Trade exhibition organiser Clarion Events has bought the January Furniture Show and Manchester Furniture Show for an undisclosed sum. Founders Laraine Janes and Theresa Raymond will continue to run the events until at least 2019. ‘We are delighted to become part of Clarion and we see the partnership with such a well-respected organiser as a very positive step for the furniture industry,’ says Janes. ‘Clarion has a real understanding of the retail and furniture market and how our events work. Its impressive series of B2B retail buying events play a crucial role in the retail supply chain, including Home & Gift, Pulse and Top Drawer. Clarion’s forward-thinking leadership, proven experience and extensive resources will allow us to maximise the potential of both shows.’ Neil Gaisford, Clarion Events retail division md, says: ‘This is an exciting acquisition for Clarion, bringing together the market leading furniture events and Clarion’s resources, expertise and successful retail B2B shows. Laraine and Theresa have built up a strong business and we are looking forward to a successful collaboration to serve the UK’s furniture industry.’ The January Furniture Show first took place in 2014 after Interiors UK was moved to London as part of May Design Series. Janes and Raymond relaunched the Manchester Furniture Show, which can trace its history back to 1946, in 1998.
Profits leap at Victoria
Victoria’s UK operating profits have increased by more than 50% in the past six months. Operating profits from continuing UK operations rose by 52% to £9.484m in the 26 weeks to 1 October. Sales rose by 28% to £112.08m. ‘Brexit has had no discernible impact on demand for our products in the UK with like for like revenues up 3.5%,’ says Geoff Wilding, Victoria executive chairman. ‘The UK, which is about 75% of our business, also continues to trade well.’ With some 60% of carpet sold in the UK imported primarily from Europe, weaker sterling has benefitted Victoria by making its main competitors product materially more expensive. Less than 20% of its cost base is in euros or US dollars. ‘Unlike most other retail purchases, consumers typically only decide to invest in a new carpet for their home once every seven to nine years. As a result, consumers have little awareness as to what a square metre of carpet “should” cost. It is for that reason that the price at which we can sell product is governed moreover by the price point of our competitors than consumers’ expectations. This, therefore, makes it easier to pass on any production-based inflationary pressures due to all manufacturers broadly being in the same position; all seeking to increase prices at similar inflection points,’ he says. Wilding says as consumer spend for carpet averages at £300£500 per room, any marginal increase in price per square metre will have limited impact on the decision to purchase. It maintains tight control over costs and inventory to ensure the group is well positioned should selling conditions change. ‘I thought it might be helpful for shareholders to understand the level of variability in our cost base. Victoria is more lowly geared operationally than I suspect some shareholders appreciate. Over half of Victoria’s cost base fluctuates directly with sales (raw materials and energy) and a further circa 30% is capable of being varied within a few weeks (eg labour, logistics and marketing costs), should conditions change,’ adds Wilding.
First for Hillarys Window coverings and flooring company Hillarys is to open its first retail store next month on White Ladies Road, Bristol. Susan White, Hillarys marketing director, says having a high street presence is important as it gives customers a choice. ‘Our business may have changed and grown significantly since it began as a cottage industry with its founder Tony Hillary fashioning made-to-measure blinds from the garage of his home. But the heart of our business is still about offering quality, value for money products and outstanding service in the comfort of a customer’s own home through our network of 1,400 advisers. ‘Research shows us that there is still a proportion of customers who want to see and touch the products before they

buy, in a traditional retail environment.’ Bristol was chosen as the first location due to its thriving and diverse retail sector. The showroom will include thousands of fabric and carpet samples, and an experienced store team will provide advice and make appointments for an adviser to measure.
Flooring retailer Tapi has opened its first central London store. The chain opened a branch at 245 Tottenham Court Road on 26 November, along with a branch in Chester on the same day A further six stores are said to be opening ‘soon’ in Bristol, Horsham, Lowestoft, Shrewsbury, Thanet and Wallasey. Branches in Bangor, Bishopbriggs, Carlisle, Crewe, Dumbarton, Dundee, Dumfries, Greenock, Hermiston Gait, Keighley, Leith, Nottingham, Truro, Walsall and Warrington will open next year. These openings would increase the chain to 82 branches and it also has a trade centre in Chester.

NEWS
Furniture Village enjoys double-digit profits growth Furniture Village’s like for like sales jumped by 10% in the past financial year as profits climbed by 12.9%. Order intake increased by 12.4% to £265m (including VAT). Underlying trading EBITDA (before one-off and new store costs) rose by £1.1m to £9.6m in the year to 27 March. Cash in the bank increased from £12.9m to £20.1m, even after capital investment of about £7m, and the business remains bank debt free. Three stores were opened during the period at Enfield, Northampton and Stevenage. A branch at Preston opened in October and a further six are planned this financial year, increasing the chain to 50 branches. Peter Harrison, Furniture Village ceo, says further growth will be supported by ‘unprecedented levels of investment in infrastructure’, including an enhanced distribution network and a fully integrated ERP solution being developed for launch next year. This is in addition to the improved web platform that launched in June. ‘We strive to do both different and better things to stand out in our market and it’s pleasing to see our hard work translating into such positive results. Simply put, our overriding philosophy is to “do it properly” and it’s evident that consumers like what we do and they like how we do it. As we expand and benefit from efficiencies in scale we will

stay focused on reinvesting in our business to ensure we deliver a strong, sensible and sustainable rate of growth,’ says Harrison. ‘Without doubt our greatest point of difference remains our people and I would like to thank each and every one of them for their drive, their passion and their commitment in helping to deliver these results. Potential threats posed to business by consumer uncertainty and rising inflation emanating from the decision to leave the European Union cannot be ignored. We will however be taking whatever actions are necessary to ensure that we successfully navigate through expected turbulence and remain on a course of profitable growth,’ he adds.
New base aids export drive for MyFurniture Furniture etailer MyFurniture has begun exporting to continental Europe after securing funding to move to larger premises. The company moved from a 30,000sqft site in Long Eaton to a 154,000sqft warehouse in nearby Sandiacre after securing a £1.7m loan from Lloyds Bank to help fund the £3m purchase. As a result of increased capacity, the
company has begun exporting furniture to customers in France, Sweden and Germany. Having more space has also allowed it to streamline operations, introduce new product lines and store delivery boxes on site, meaning customers receive their orders more quickly. The growth in operations is set to increase the 32-strong workforce by
around 40% in the next 12 months as it looks to lift its £8m turnover by the same amount. ‘Lloyds Bank has ensured we have access to the funding we need to extend our reach across Europe and continue to grow the scale of our operations, and we look forward to working with the team again as we expand further,’ says Martin Thom, MyFurniture md.
ScS ‘in a strong position’ as more stores open Upholstery and flooring chain ScS is ‘in a strong position’ shareholders have been told. Addressing shareholders at the chain’s AGM, chairman Alan Smith said like for like order intake for the 16 weeks to 19 November was up 5%: ‘a pleasing performance against particularly strong comparatives.’

‘We are also delighted that our new store in Aberdeen has seen strong trading since opening on 22 September,’ he says. A further three stores are scheduled to open on Boxing Day 2016 – Plymouth, Straiton (Edinburgh) and Thanet. Following these openings, the group will trade from 100 ScS stores and
operate 28 House of Fraser concessions. He says ‘the business remains in a strong position to maximise opportunities as they arise and grow market share.’ But Smith warned that like for like growth would be difficult as it ‘continues to face very strong comparatives during the remainder of the year.’

Stores close as no buyer found for Betta Living
La-Z-Boy’s Nicholas
La-Z-Boy regains UK licence US upholstery company La-Z-Boy has bought back the UK and Republic of Ireland licence from Furnico, which has been La-Z-Boy’s sales and distribution partner since 2008. La-Z-Boy said annual sales were about $42m, about half of which it already received under the terms of the licensing deal. This will end on 1 January. ‘Furnico has done an amazing job in growing the business and we intend to further enhance our position in the market by making investments in the brand and our digital presence. We thank David Winter, Paul Riding and the rest of the Furnico team for the outstanding work they have done, and look forward to a great future for the business,’ says Doug Collier, La-Z-Boy senior vice president, chief marketing officer and president international. The company has recruited Keith Wilson, who until recently was Calligaris’ UK and Ireland director, to head La-Z-Boy UK.
New ways in Carlisle Scotland and North-West England flooring retailer Carpet Ways has relocated its Carlisle branch to much larger premises, while retaining its town centre presence. The 10-store chain moved to the next door unit on the town’s Lancaster Street, which now gives it 20,00sqft of space, which it says is the largest in Cumbria. ‘We needed more room for stock and it just made sense to move’, says Amanda MacKay, Carpet Ways marketing manager.

Administrators of fitted furniture retailer Betta Living have sold the company’s order book and made 300 staff at its 24 stores redundant after failing to find a buyer. Anthony Collier and Ben Woolrych, partners at administrator FRP Advisory, said a deal has been agreed to sell certain assets to a team comprising former management of the Oldhamheadquartered company. They said the transaction has been structured to help deliver existing orders and may secure a small number of jobs. ‘We are pleased that a solution has been found with a view to fulfilling existing customer orders, which may also lead to the creation of jobs in the future,’ says Collier. ‘We are disappointed, however, that a buyer for the business as a whole could not be found which will unfortunately result in store closures and redundancies. ‘We will be working closely with those impacted by store closures. Our immediate priority will be to work with any former employees and ensure that they are able to make timely claims from the Redundancy Protection Service.’ Administrators said the chain’s expansion had seen rising occupational costs from newer space push the company into a loss-making position and squeezed cashflow to ‘unsustainable levels’.
John Sylvester John Sylvester, former Metro chief executive, died on 6 November, aged 73. He headed the buying group from 1989 to 2008. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2012, and later Parkinson’s. A statement from his daughter, Bev, said: ‘I’m so sad to let you know that my lovely charming Dad passed away peacefully in his sleep. He had deteriorated seriously, so I knew it was going to happen, so it was a blessing it was fairly quick and painless for him. ‘I can’t imagine not seeing him and will miss him massively. Please remember the good times you had with him and not the cruel illness that took him away. He’ll no doubt be having a big glass of red wine wherever his is now.’
Boost for students The Furniture Makers’ Company’s annual Royal Charter Appeal has raised £20,000, enabling the charity to financially support even more university and college students studying furnishing related courses around the UK. ‘The cost of higher education continues to rise and a scholarship or bursary can make a huge difference to the recipient. In many cases it enables a student, who otherwise would not have the chance, to continue their education,’ says Lord Kirkham, FMC charity president. ‘On behalf of The Furniture Makers’ Company, I would like to thank everyone who donated to this incredibly important cause which helps safeguard the future of the industry.’

Translating nature Inspiration is everywhere for Oke Nollet, Quick-Step design director ‘I look for beauty in ordinary things. Nature is filled with everyday wonders. A rainbow, for instance, is my favourite natural event. A rainbow never ceases to amaze me with its misty, elusive rays of colour. There is just so much beauty surrounding us on a daily basis. That’s something my father taught me. He is a cartoonist, and always says: “Tell me what you see”. He taught me not to simply glance at the world, but to really see it, to experience it using all of my senses,’ says Oke Nollet, Quick-Step design director. ‘One of my earliest memories is the smell of my grandfather’s workshop: he made stairs for a living. It’s where I picked up my love for wood. My other grandfather worked at a printing office, which is where my fascination for colours and designs developed. It’s also where I picked up my perfectionism – every print had to be perfect. Even the techniques I learned studying graphic design and photography at Luca School of Art are still vital to me today. When creating a design, I take a mental snapshot of what the wood should ideally look like and try to translate that to reality.’ For Nollet, design is a journey. ‘In developing our gold and brown laminate floors, for example, we first focused on finding original wood planks with perfectly shaped and balanced grains. Those grains were crucial, since they were to form our golden accents. We scanned the originals and optimised the images. Grains, knots and cracks were removed or duplicated in order to assemble the perfect design. Once this was done, we searched for the tint of gold that would perfectly highlight the colour of the wood. We experimented with different types of gold nail polish, as gold consists of different pigments. ‚‚‚

WOOD AND LAMINATE
Left: The design team look to enhance nature Above: Fifty pigments were created Below: Manufacturing techniques were developed for Natural Pine (Impressive 1860) and Burned Oak (Impressive 1862)
It’s challenging to find the exact ones that combine into the desired golden end result. Fifty pigments were created by our lab to discover the ideal effect on laminate,’ she explains. The Burned Planks collection is another example she highlights. ‘We started experimenting by burning oak planks, but the structure was never like I envisioned it to be. After some research, we discovered a Japanese technique to burn pine so we started the process all over again, with pine planks. Since the structure of the burned planks was very delicate, we could not use our normal pressing techniques. So we searched for different, more high-tech technologies to create the perfect burned laminate planks. In order to capture all the details of the wood structure and its gloss levels, and accurately replicate them on laminate, we used a unique technique, unseen in the flooring industry.’ Nollet stresses creating finishes isn’t a simple process. ‘It is, and at the same time, it isn’t. I love this job so much and I’ve been doing it for 15 years now, so it really comes naturally to me. But there are several elements that we have to take into account when designing a new collection, such as the various preferences of different markets and generations. And we constantly strive for a balance between trendy and timeless. At the end of the day, the product has to be authentic.’ She says the current popularity of the ‘touch of gold’ in interior design is a good example. ‘We simply had to do
22
Interiors Monthly December 2016
something with that, but it had to be subtle. Not too many people would want a shiny golden living room floor. So, we came up with a design featuring beautiful warm wood and just a couple of gold details: just enough to capture the warmth and optimism of the trend, but not so much that it would look fake or cheap. Quality and authenticity always come first.’ Offering products in parquet, laminate and vinyl presents different opportunities and challenges. ‘For parquet, we get to work with a natural product, so the result is always unique. Laminate and vinyl, on the other hand, have the amazing advantages that we can play around with: we have more options in terms of design,’ she says. ‘Pine, for instance, is far too fragile to use as parquet. It scratches and dents in a heartbeat. Our research and development, however, developed a technique that allows us to press the very pronounced structure of pine on to laminate with a very natural looking result. In addition, to make it even more natural looking, we’ve created a technology that presses the joints into the laminate plank, so they blend in perfectly with the colour design and structure of the plank. The only thing we haven’t been able to add is that typical wood smell. Each material has its own advantages and in the end, for me, it’s all about creating a timeless masterpiece. I always strive for perfection,’ adds Nollet. Visit: www.quick-step.co.uk

Triple bonus Collins and Hayes will add three designs next month Collins and Hayes will be showing a dozen upholstery models at the January Furniture Show, alongside occasional chairs, stools and upholstered tables. ‘It’s a unique, natural collection with real choice and comfort,’ says Matt O’Flynn, Collins and Hayes md. Of the 12 models, three will be making their debut. ‘Gracie is the best of all worlds: a high back sofa and unit range with contemporary styling, generous seat proportions, and useful but unobtrusive square arm with wing detail which is removable. Squidgy mixed scatterbacks allow for a playful mix on fabric selection. Gracie’s sectional unit system maximises on seating with its very useable corner. This suits all users particularly with its comfortable high back looking elegant not awkward. The stylish wooden plinth has shadow gap detailing,’ he explains. The reversible cushions, even on the chaise, are all fully lined extending the product’s lifespan. A ‘lifestyle chaise’ includes a stool for flexible seating and relaxing options. It features a sprung front edge and lifetime guarantee on the frame. At the show it will be shown in a velvety soft herringbone and detailed geometric design on back cushions. ‘Within our wide range of fabrics, we offer variety in texture, colour and design all with one common thread. Our unique manufacturing process of bonding a wool interliner to our fully boarded frame
enables us to leave natural fabrics, free from back coating chemicals. This is a unique solution that allows the fabric to breathe, be chemical free as well as soft and supple as it was intended. Boarding the outside of our sofa frames improves the longevity and performance of the furniture that is to be expected from a furniture brand of this quality and calibre,’ says O’Flynn. New POS material supporting the brand with its unique natural fabric solution will be on display. Banks is a low and sleek-sit sofa range referencing traditional undertones with a scroll arm and turned leg. ‘Contemporary design with a Collins and Hayes twist, Banks is very stylish, on trend with a classic and cosy twist. The
fabrics on this model are exclusive to us and reflect high end catwalk trends, including a tapestry style floral and high end contemporary Chanel-inspired boucle,’ says Kate Delany, Collins and Hayes creative and marketing executive. Duggie is a sleek and slim high back accent chair with twin needle tailoring on the arms and coordinates with Gracie. ‘Launched at AIS and Long Point this autumn, the Semper sofa and unit range will be with us following its recent success. ‘We recognise price point is important, therefore Semper’s exclusive package and fabric selection focuses on this area while still offering the Collins and Hayes core quality,’ adds Delany. Opposite page: Country Tweed Left: Dapper Tweed Below: Vintage Harris Tweed Overcoat chair Bottom: Aquascutum Game Bird wing chair
A tweed armchair suggests upmarket traditional country living, but RhubarbLondon has given the style a different look, using vintage clothing to create unique designs. Upholstered using an original 1950s fur-collared Dunn & Co Crombie overcoat, the late Victorian scroll-back armchair frame has been reimagined by RubarbLondon to create the Country Tweed armchair. The vintage coat has been altered to fit the chair’s silhouette, each panel tailored by hand. Coordinating moss and peat tweed is used for the side panels, while the coat’s signature tartan lining is recycled to create piped edges, the neck line, pocket detailing and arm fronts. The chair is complemented by original turned wooden legs, tipped with brass castors and completed in the classic RhubarbLondon fashion with the jacket’s original label and Harris Tweed Authenticity insignia taking pride of place. The Dapper Tweed armchair has been reupholstered using a pair of vintage Dunn & Co Harris Tweed houndstooth country jackets, which feature the original tan suede arm caps. It is dressed with an equestrian stock neckpiece, teamed with a snaffle bit stock pin to give the chair a true sense of riding influence. A cobbler was then commissioned to create the chair’s distinctive tan plaited leather arm supports, finishing off the piece with double piped leather detail and vintage leather football button fastenings. The original jacket labels were stitched on to the chair alongside the Harris Tweed Authenticity label, topped off in a final flourish with a set of pheasant feathers in the button hole alongside a vintage papier-mâché ‘Judge’ badge. The Aquascutum Game Bird wing chair combines a traditional fireside wing chair proudly wearing an original Aquascutum tweed coat and is complemented with an ash grey wool tweed seat with original silk coat lining to sides with a constructed tab and pocket feature. It is finished off with suede piped front arms caps and detailing and game bird feathers on the collar. The Vintage Harris Tweed Overcoat chair sees a deep seated Victorian armchair reupholstered in an eclectic mix of original Harris Tweed overcoat and matching Tweed, ginger Tweed piped detail resting on turned wooden legs. Sleeping partners Mlily secures Manchester United FC partnership Chinese mattress and pillow manufacturer Mlily has become Manchester United FC’s first official mattress and pillow partner in a five-year global partnership. James Ni, Mlily founder, announced the agreement as the company looks to strengthen its brand and expand its marketing capabilities. The agreement will see the manufacturer work with staff at the club’s Aon Training Complex, where Mlily mattresses will be used in the complex’s existing sleeping pods. The brand will also be visible on Premier League match days at Old Trafford, featuring on the digital perimeter boards. ‘Mlily has an established track record of producing a high quality product,’ says Richard Arnold, Manchester United group md. ‘We want to make the best
use of the latest technology and expertise that can help our team, which in this case is the sleep and recovery of players.’ Players Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Luke Shaw attended the media launch and echoed Arnold’s sentiments. ‘It’s very important for us as players to maintain a high quality sleep, especially with our busy schedule,’ says England international Shaw. ‘It is important to ensure we have good sleep to make sure we are fit and sharp for when the games come around.’ ‘The facilities here are very good which is something that we as players appreciate. We are here every day so they need to be right to give us the best chance when we go on to the pitch. The club is still working on the facilities to try to make them even better. It is great for us to be able to come in here every day
and work with these facilities,’ says Rooney. ‘As Luke said, it is very important for us as professional footballers. It is important to train well to perform well on the pitch. It is important to rest well and eat properly. Between games it is important to rest your body and your mind as well and it helps if you have a good rest and sleep to get ready,’ says Mata. Manchester United fan Ni, adds: ‘We have been active in multiple channels of the bedding industry for several years. Our experience along with our commitment to producing high quality mattresses and pillows has resulted in stress-free sleep and healthier lives for customers. These results are now available to Manchester United’s players and will find a wider audience due to our global partnership.’ Visit: www.mlily.uk

Individual style Furniture Origins has reacted to retailers’ demands ‘At Furniture Origins we understand that each retailer has their own individual style and needs a specific je ne sais quoi to capture their customers’ imagination. That is why we work closely with them to develop ranges that will appeal to their customer bases: our latest House Chair offer is a perfect case in point,’ says a company spokesman. Reacting to retailers’ demands for a flexible upholstered chair proposition, the company put together a selection of chairs that can be used as accents or as part of a full display to transform the room and offer an alternative more aspirational look. ‘Apart from getting the designs and quality right, key to this success has been our ability and willingness to offer more than 20 different upholstered chairs and stools from stock on mix and match container bases or wholesale through Classic Furniture. ‘Looking ahead to the January Furniture Show, we aim to further enhance our offer by introducing even more versatility and choice both in terms of design and lifestyle. Profitable advantages SMG continues to add to the services it offers members ‘The key driver for SMG is to create profitable partnerships between our members and approved suppliers. They have the same goals and SMG is able to deliver more sales and greater profitability for both,’ says Ben Young, SMG director of marketing. ‘A successful 12 months has seen many new developments in the membership package and this has not only made our current members more profitable but it has also enabled us to attract retailers that haven’t been part of a group before.’ With the group now representing more than 380 retail outlets in the UK, not only is SMG adding to the flooring proposition regularly, it has developed a comprehensive business support package that rewards flooring retailers. ‘It provides tremendous value and support with great offers on items such as credit card rates, energy pricing, retail finance, commercial vehicles and the superb business support helpline,’ he says. ‘SMG is extremely proud to be renowned for developing this and I know it would have come as no surprise to many of you that the UK’s first dedicated commercial insurance policy for flooring specific retailers was created by SMG.’ The bespoke insurance package includes professional indemnity, financial loss, damage to property and cover for subcontractors not employed by the business. ‘Members who attended the Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show in May were introduced to SMG Insurance Solutions and were delighted to hear that they would

receive a guaranteed saving of 10% on their existing premiums,’ says Young. The business support elements alone have helped save significant amounts of money for members and this addition is guaranteed to save them even more which has been a factor in membership recruitment this year. ‘SMG has something for every retailer, large or small, long established or just starting out. Members run their business as they see fit but gain advantage from the most comprehensive package of benefits. We don’t have a regional or national structure and therefore we can guarantee that all members are treated equally and get our 100% dedication to making their business more successful,’ adds Young. BUYING GROUPS All signage has been made uniform
Transformer Metro’s marketing team has revamped another retailer Most retailers in the Metro group cite own labelling as a major benefit to group membership. Metro takes that one stage further and allows its members access to a host of marketing support that not only supports Carpet 1st – Metro’s own brand label – but also the independence of the individual retailer. The buying group is dedicated to respecting the independence of its members and appreciates that, despite all retailers following the same principle, few are exactly the same. This is why it offers a full, bespoke marketing service to allow members to enhance their Carpet 1st business or, if they choose, focus on the fundamental goals their business is looking to achieve. So unlike a manufacturer or distributor, Metro supports whatever marketing project its members may have in mind. One such member is Mitchells Carpets in Dartford, Kent. This long established retailer and group member contacted the marketing team to help with its internal shop project. Externally Mitchells has invested thousands of pounds and
40
Interiors Monthly December 2016
had its impressive listed frontage renovated with Lottery support to recreate what the building would have looked like originally. The results are superb but there was a need to continue the appearance inside. The first meeting with Rose Mitchell and Alan Beckham was on-site to discuss and measure the planned alterations. This gave both parties the chance to work out what was possible. Following this survey, Steve Moralee, Metro marketing consultant, produced a list of more than 70 jobs that would form the individual requirements of this retailer. Everything was approved prior to the return visit of Moralee and his son Adam to carry out the two-day project. Mitchells wanted to make everything in-store consistent. A new logo was made in colours that matched the building and its exterior along with a new display style. All existing handwritten and diy POS was removed and replaced with consistent diamond shaped messages. All bare wall spaces were re-signed with consistent indoor
signage and all lecterns and tombolas were rebranded as a combination of Mitchells and Carpet 1st. As Metro has a fully equipped marketing vehicle, it was possible to print and manufacture what was needed off and on-site. The marketing team holds measurements, photographs and all produced material on file so recreating or adding to the displays is a simple task of printing and sending. ‘Helping our retailers achieve their goals is incredibly rewarding. The service we provide is unique because it is completely bespoke and no two retailers are exactly the same. We pride ourselves on being able to enhance the retailer’s own marketing as opposed to insisting they use ours which is incredibly important to the independent retailer,’ says Moralee. ‘Advice, labour and time of the marketing team is free. Members only pay for materials which is guaranteed to be competitive.’ Visit: www.carpet1st.co.uk

Private function Panacea will offer Natuzzi’s Private Label from stock Panacea has come a long way in just a year. It launched at 2016’s January Furniture Show with a range of full leather products from Thailand and a newly established network of agents. Since then the business model has changed direction several times, although its core belief and values have remained the same. It believes there is a market for a wholesaler offering a locally held stock of premium full leather sofas backed by an outstanding service experience. This results in a customer being able to have a sofa in their home within 48 hours of ordering it from the shopfloor. ‘This year with a position in Hall 1 and a range of sofas exclusively from the Private Label collection by Natuzzi, I believe we now have the best business model to deliver our aspirations,’ says James Appleby, Panacea general manager. ‘We are extremely confident that by offering the Private Label
collection to the independent audience, not only are people able to capitalise on our immediate delivery from stock, but we are also providing access to a range that previously was inaccessible unless ordered by the full truck load.’ Roger Mynett, Natuzzi Group UK director, says: ‘It’s a partnership that benefits everyone. Our customers have for a while expressed interest in the Private Label products; it’s a great entry to our aspirational brand and for them to be able to show these knowing Panacea can deliver immediately from stock is fantastic. Combined with Panacea’s golden partner status with Natuzzi, the range is able to remain extremely competitive.’ Panacea will show the existing Private Label collection, of which a substantial stock will be held, alongside new models from the collection. Tower of strength UK exhibitors also have a presence in Hannover
The strength of British wool will be promoted
British Wool is exhibiting as part of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce UKTI initiative, which also sees a collective of UK carpet manufacturers exhibiting in one space in hall 5. British Wool will feature its Platinum Power promotion, which interactively exhibits the extreme strength of 100% British wool and compares it to the damaging instant effect of pressure on other wools within a typical blend. The natural, robust bulk of British wool is a characteristic of many sheep breeds in the UK and results from a combination of the temperate climate, the terrain the sheep inhabit, coupled with historic breeding. ‘We know that British wool has exceptional strength and can resist continuous pressure as the Platinum Power test shows very clearly. It is a fantastic fibre in its 100% form but also adds enormous value to carpet blends when it is more than 50% of the carpet. However, this appearance retention is particularly evident in carpet blends with 70% British wool within the wool content,’ says Tim Booth, British Wool marketing manager. Also featuring on the stand will be Cormar Carpets, Cavalier Carpets, Brockway Carpets and Chromatone. In the thick of it Launches and award winners at Brussels In dining thick table-tops in solid wood were the order of the day at the Brussels Furniture Fair, the thicker and larger the better with rough timber styling. But, many would be too large for most UK homes. In upholstery plain fabrics dominated with angular designs, especially on swivel chairs. Gwinner added to its home entertainment offer with Blogg, featuring the multitude of customisable options of previous ranges such as Media Concept. ROM introduced the Signature collection, its most contemporary range, with a much slimmer silhouette. New features include a manual glider seat option where the seat depth can be manually changed by 20cm. It is available in three options: fixed back (Elegant), loose cushions (Standard) and scatter cushions (Pure). The new mechanism provides a more ergonomic position, offering extra comfort and more space for the footrest to be folded underneath the seat, giving the slimmer silhouette of the sofa. The Q Box is an integrated side table that comes in five wood finishes with additional storage space and USB ports and a plug.
Finesse by Veldeman Bedding won the Innovation Balthazar. ‘Smart technology in a state of the art design. The baseless construction creates a sense of space and neatness. Layers by Joli, designed by Sylvain Willenz, took the Best of Belgium award. ‘An all-in concept for tables, chairs and lighting. The common theme is the stratified and thus flexible structure.
