A new era The decision of Lord Harris to step back from the day to day running of Carpetright shows how succession planning should be done For the first time in 25 years Lord Harris will not be directly involved in the day to day running of Carpetright when the transition period with the new trading director ends (see page 12). Graham Harris – no he’s not part of the family – will be stepping into a very large pair of shoes as he takes over buying at the chain. Carpetright may have its detractors, but few can argue that Lord Harris hasn’t had a large part in shaping the UK’s flooring landscape over the past quarter of a century. The return of Darren Shapland as chief executive in May 2012 marked the public start of succession, and the latest management changes mark the end of a

process that seems to have gone smoothly. Now the pressure of getting the right products rests with Graham Harris. As Harris enters the interiors industry, another will make its debut geographically, when Barker & Stonehouse opens its first store in the South of England next month (see page 8). Its venture to London will be much anticipated, not least by rivals anxious to see if it can repeat the success it has achieved in the northern half of the country. The chain is a former Interiors Monthly Awards winner and many thanks to those of you who have already voted in this year’s awards. If you haven’t already, you can still vote online and the awards form appears for the final time on page 6. Many of the categories are neck and neck so your vote could make all the difference. On the topic of winners, it was fitting that The Furniture Makers’ Design Guild Mark winners should be revealed (see page 10) as the new Master called on UK manufacturers to invest in design (see page 8). There is no doubt we have the design talent and thankfully more companies are recognising this.

Barker and Stonehouse expands into London Barker & Stonehouse is to open its first London store, a 25,000sqft unit in Battersea, next month. The £1m store, the chain’s ninth, will occupy two floors in one of the most historic buildings south of the Thames – the old Price’s Candle factory. The store will be run by Imran Tai, currently Nottingham store manager, and employ 28 staff. ‘We’re really excited about this new store, we feel the time is right to expand to the South and we’re confident that we’ve got a lot to offer the London audience. We’ve invested heavily in developing our own exclusive ranges so we know we’ve got something different to offer customers,’ says James Barker, Barker and Stonehouse md. ‘We’re delighted to have found such a great building for the store. Apart from the beautiful architecture it has great natural light and its own car parking.’ During the renovation it was discovered that the steel in the building was made by Middlesbrough company Dorman Long. ‘There was also a twist of fate as we discovered a North East connection while renovating the building. It was a nice surprise and we’ll be retaining as many features of the original iron framework as possible,’ adds Barker.

Established in 1830, Price’s transformed the candle industry by bringing inexpensive light to the working classes of Victorian Britain. In recognition of the building’s history, a selection of Price’s candles will be on display and be available for purchase in the new store under the Farris name.

Hurst sails solo for Three Rivers store venture After 30 years in the furniture industry, Matthew Hurst has branched out on his own, opening Three Rivers Furniture in Truro, Cornwall. ‘I have worked in the furniture industry in Cornwall for 30 years now. Starting this business for myself has enabled me to

bring everything I have learned over the years together. We know that furniture is one area where the online stores can’t compete with a physical shop for customer experience,’ he says. Hurst converted a former warehouse on the town’s Kenwyn Street and the

majority of its offer is British-made. Hurst, who was supported by family members to raise the £1m capital for his venture, says the store will help boost the retail heart of the town. ‘I wouldn’t have invested my money in this venture if it wasn’t going to work.’

New format boost Marks & Spencer’s latest Home format has delivered a healthy sales rise for the chain. Since introducing the format at its Cheshire Oaks store last autumn, Marks & Spencer has rolled out the format to a further 32 branches. These stores have experienced home sales 9% higher than in unconverted branches. The rise has helped it to increase furniture sales by 2%, which the chain attributed to improved quality and faster delivery.

Gabbertas scoops awards quartet Mark Gabbertas scooped four awards in the The Furniture Makers’ Design Guild Marks, which rewards excellence in the design of furniture in volume production. This year 21 of the 42 designs entered were recognised. Gabbertas picked up awards for: Metro for Lyndon Design, and Diabolo, Mir and MirA, for Chorus Furniture. Store closure Hampshire flooring and furniture retailer Habels is to stop trading at its Andover store after falling footfall. The store will close for good when the stock has been sold in its closing down sale. It will retain its Winchester bed store. Habels, a member of the Metro buying group, first opened in Winchester in 1945 when Jack and Gretel Habel began manufacturing beds and upholstery. The Andover store opened 35 years ago. A company statement said: ‘The Habel family, Jack and Danny, have had many happy and successful years working in Andover and have developed many friendships in that time. Danny Habel has continued the business on his own since his father’s death in 1998 and is proud of what he has achieved since that time. ‘Shopping trends have changed over the years and Habels’ position in Black Swan Yard is not frequented as it once was.’

Tile sales slip Flooring and tile chain Topps Tiles has seen sales slip in recent weeks while it looks for £2m of cost savings. The 320-store chain has seen like for like sales drop by 2.8% in the eight weeks since 30 March. This follows a drop of 2.1% in the previous quarter. Like for like sales were up 1.6% in the first half of the period, producing a fall of 0.2% over the period. Pre-tax profits fell by £300,000 to £4.7m as total sales rose by 0.9% to £87.4m.

Mark Gabbertas’ Diabolo

‘Idealist’ British designer William Plunkett dies British furniture designer and manufacturer William Plunkett has died aged 84. ‘My generation of designers were idealists. We really believed we could make a difference to Britain by producing well-designed products,’ he once said. Working in a modernist idiom but in a highly individual style, he combined engineering skills with sculptural flair to create striking metal-framed seating and tables that won a string of awards. Although his heyday was the 1960s,

his designs have had lasting appeal. One of his most successful designs was the Kingston (1967), a flexible seating system, later known as the Plunkett Plan, in which chairs, sofas and benches were created from rows of individually upholstered foam rolls glued to plywood boards mounted on an aluminium frame. The Epsom (1966) worked on similar principles, but used pre-formed plywood strips to create curved seats. He sold his company to Giroflex in 1977, and set up Plunkett Plan the

following year. Having retained the rights to his earlier designs, he carried on producing furniture to order until 2005. In 2000 twentytwentyone put the Kingston back into production with the WP and more reissues in the pipeline. Plunkett’s work will also feature in Modern British Furniture: Design Since 1945, to be published by the V&A in October. Plunkett is survived by his second wife Ruth, their children, William and Marigold, and his daughter Belinda, from his first marriage. He died on 5 May.

Online sales have increased for Next

Vince Holden has joined Whitestone Weavers as UK sales director. Kitchens International has appointed Louisa Forsyth, who joined as a design technician in 2005, as showroom manager for its Westfield Road, Edinburgh studio. Buoyant Upholstery has named Ellen Brindle as key accounts manager and Rose Reeves as key accounts and training manager. Dunlop Adhesives has recruited Scott Hamilton as area sales manager for the South of the UK.

Retail Furniture Displays has appointed Jon Nock (above) as national sales manager. He brings with him eight years of POS and display experience, along with over 30 years of flooring industry knowledge. ‘Over the past year the company has seen significant growth and it was essential to recruit a new sales manager to the existing team,’ says Neil Enefer, Retail Furniture Displays md. ‘This will ensure that we continue to provide the very best customer service to our new and existing customers. Retail Furniture’s reputation is built on design innovation, product excellence, technical expertise and customer focus. We are keen to expand into the flooring display market and Jon is the right person to guide us in this sector,’ he says.

Interiors and clothing chain Next has revealed the extent of sales volatility of the past three months, with sales fluctuating by about £25m a week. Bad weather in March prompted sales to drop by about £5m a week compared with 2012 and by about £12m in the last week of March. They bounced back in April and May, with a £13m jump in the first week of May. The overall performance in the 14 weeks to 4 May saw shoppers continuing to move to buying online or through mail order. Sales were up 2.2%, including 1.5% from new sales space, but retail sales were down 1.9% and online sales 8.9% higher.

Lord Harris set to take a back seat Lord Harris is to cut back on his day-to-day involvement at Carpetright as the chain’s succession plan continues. Former Tesco executive Graham Harris (not a member of the family) takes on the new role of trading director and will be responsible for product, buying and logistics. He will sit on the executive committee, but not the board. Martin Harris will become group development director, a new board-level role reflecting the increased focus on the development of Carpetright’s customerfacing activities, including store development, marketing and the further evolution of the digital channel. ‘As part of the management succession plan, we have been working hard over the last 12 months to put in place the best possible future management structure. The changes are the next step in this plan as we focus on the continued growth of the

business,’ says Darren Shapland, Carpetright chief executive. ‘Graham is a highly experienced retail executive, with a near 30-year track record at some of the UK’s largest and most successful retailers, and his background in hardline categories leaves him wellqualified to take on the newly-created trading director post. ‘Graham’s appointment will free up time for Martin to focus on critical growth aspects of our business, such as the development of our customer proposition. ‘In line with the succession plan we began implementing in mid-2012 Lord Harris will reduce his day-to-day involvement, but will be working closely with Graham and the team over the coming period to ensure a smooth transition,’ he adds. Graham Harris, 46, spent 12 years in a variety of senior roles at Tesco.

Flagship store for Furniture Village Furniture Village has opened its largest store, on the ‘Oxford Street of retail warehousing’. The 36,000sqft store is on Purley Way, Croydon. The chain spent 12 weeks revamping the former Comet unit. ‘To me, Purley Way is the Oxford Street of retail warehousing. There is a great selection of big name stores such PC World, John Lewis

and Ikea and people like that,’ says Peter Harrison, Furniture Village chief executive. ‘It is a really vibrant area and I anticipate a long and exciting presence for Furniture Village in the area.’ The chain, which has 39 stores, was previously on the Fiveways Retail Park on Purley way.

Understanding the invisible customer In retail there is a wealth of information about customers; what they buy, how much they spend, when they spend and who they are. This information is invaluable in building a business that delivers against the needs that a customer has. The needs of the invisible customer are something altogether more elusive to capture – how powerful would it be to understand what customers want from your business whether they make a purchase (confirmation of their need) or leave empty-handed? This information has historically been captured via shops and the completion of exit interviews. But with the new world of data upon us, we have the opportunity to push the boundaries of what has traditionally been possible. When we discuss online shopping we enter a multi-faceted world of decision making and each decision leaves an invisible (to the naked eye) trace. These records show micro-level detail around someone visiting your and your rival’s website. When does someone visit, where do they go, what do they do, when do they leave, do they return? This is incredibly valuable in better understanding how to engage with a broader cross section of customers and expanding the base of people you are currently engaged with. Customers generally have a limited repertoire of retailers they visit and therefore any piece of information that can lead to a space on the shopper’s list has to be of value. Multi-variant testing offering different website looks and feels to different sets of customers, without their knowledge, gives a clear steer as to how each element of each website performs, for example. The net result is a website that meets the needs of the majority of visitors and converts more people to actual shoppers. By capturing sufficient data on browsing habits, the wisdom of crowds comes to life. Enough people operating in a similar way leads to clear insight on their likely future behaviour. If we can use this to redefine a website based on search history or page navigation, we get to a point where we’re able to direct the customer in the most appropriate manner. By delivering a unique shopping experience, it increases the likelihood that they will become an actual shopper as opposed to a dissatisfied browser. The biggest win is translating the findings into small, almost imperceptible changes that make a shopper’s experience more positive and more frequent. The invisible customer is visible if you look hard enough and in the right places.

Record numbers The next 3F show, 5-9 September, is looking to build upon the success of the 29th edition in March. The event attracted 119,769 visitors, with 51,216 attending on the first day – both records. The show attracted 11,052 international buyers. ‘We believe the market is turning upward again,’ says Yin Chengzhi, president of Dongguan Famous Furniture Association, the organiser of 3F. ‘Many furniture dealers had held back their purchasing over the past year. The market upbeat has sent out a strong signal to dealers to buy in. The accumulated buying power is released in this 3F, triggering a wave of swift orders.’ Liu Shiling, a furniture retailer from Guangzhou, says: ‘Among all of the furniture shows in China, 3F is the one that best accommodates the needs of furniture dealers in terms of product style, pricing points and number of furniture brands.’ Wang Quan, a retailer from Shanghai, says: ‘3F helps furniture dealers in the way it assembles all the furniture brands who are serious about the domestic furniture market in one place, so chances are high for a dealer to find the perfect match. And since these exhibitors have developed their products for the Chinese market and most of them are willing to

The Irish Furniture & Interiors Fair, at the RDS, Dublin from 6-8 October, is aiming to exorcise the economic ghosts of the past few years with new features, new dates, a brighter venue and lots of new furniture. After dialogue with the industry, the event has moved from spring to autumn, allowing suppliers to preview furniture ranges in advance of Christmas and January events. The show has heeded calls for a complementary backdrop to interiors products by relocating to RDS’s main hall. Interiors UK organiser UBM will launch its first furniture and interiors show in south-east Asia in September, with Southeast Asia Furniture & Interiors Import-Export Exhibition (SEAFIE) taking place in Kuala Lumpur from 13-16 September. The Putra World Trade Centre show will complement the Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF), held in March, and other UBM shows, notably Furniture China – the world’s largest furniture exhibition – Index Fairs in India and Interiors UK. The show will cover 45,000sqm and feature the international mid to high end brands of home and office furniture, interior design products and soft furnishings. SEAFIE is targeted to draw 300 exhibitors and 20,000 buyers. Setting standards Things are looking good for Domotex 2014, with organiser Deutsche Messe reporting strong exhibitor registration seven months from opening day. ‘Given the strong response to date, we’re feeling very optimistic about next January,’ says Jochen Kockler, Deutsche Messe management board member. ‘The solid registration levels and the high proportion of exhibitors from outside Germany testify to Domotex’s position as a key fixture in the calendar of the international carpet and floorcoverings industry. The pleasingly high number of companies that have registered so far is a good sign both for Domotex and for the industry as a whole,’ he says. Domotex will have a new format that will put the emphasis on the innovations, expertise and skills of the exhibitors and enable them to more effectively engage

with key visitors, Kockler adds. The 11-14 January show will see the return of the Wood Flooring Summit. Having premiered in 2012, Berry Floor, Boen Parkett, Egger, Fetim, Hamberger, Kaindl, Krone Group Switzerland, Meisterwerke, Parador and Tarkett are among those already confirmed for next year. The show will also include exclusive handmade carpet and rug creations by some of the world’s most innovative designers, including Creative Matters, Haynes Robinson, Hossein Rezvani, Jan Kath, Obeetee, Rug Star and Wool and Silk Rugs. The top end of the carpet design world will showcase an extensive array of handmade carpets and rugs. Displays will include a spectacular celebration of creations for lovers of fine design and exquisite craftsmanship. Other special displays, such as the

Recognised as the UK’s largest bed exhibition, The National Bed Federation’s Bed Show is back for a fourth year from 24-25 September. Trooping of the colours This year’s Discovery Zone at Meet only Original Designs (MoOD) will be themed around colour, based on the trend colours from eMOTION, the MoOD trend forecast. For the first time, the contract range will also be displayed in the Discovery Zone, in hall 7. Here visitors will find the sample banks, the Blue Drops, the winners of the Blue Drop Awards, the trends (eMOTION), colours and innovations. In addition, this year the Innovation Platform will be even bigger. Last year, four partners worked on the selection: MatériO, CELC Masters of Linen, Trendease International and Global Color Research. Treasure hunt in the city The number of Fuorisalone events taking place in Milan city centre alongside ISalone continues to grow, fascinate and frustrate in equal measure. The coffee and lamp tables feature circular table tops and shelves, with a simple adornment in the form of a circumference groove. The shelves are offset to give an asymmetrical look to the pieces. It was created as an unpretentious homage to 1980’s Yugoslavian children’s educational TV show Big and Small. Natural wood combines with bright yellow inserts for a retro yet contemporary look. More than 60 suppliers introduced a host of products at the Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show. Abingdon added a 90oz weight to Emperor, while debuting Stainfree Reflections and Tweed Naturelle. Adam Carpets has developed colour coordination charts with Farrow & Ball and is developing POS mood boards including fabrics. It also unveiled the Revelation collection of stripes, plains and graphics. Alternative updated its colour palette, revamped the borders collection and showed a new display stand. Amtico highlighted its Signature collection with 188 designs, including 78 introduced this year. Asiatic unveiled Matrix, a collection of 46 designs/colours in a mixture of styles including floral, geometric and textured. From Associated Weavers was Briar Twist in two weights and new colours for Park Lane, part of the new Calder Wool brand. Glenweave saw updated colours, including lighter greys while Sophistication is available in two weights. Brink & Campman showed off the Kaleidoscope collection of 100% wool digitally printed rugs. Brintons added three colours to the Pure Living stripe and new colours to Bell Twist while introducing the Causeway range Evolution. Carpet Recycling UK told retailers of its success in increasing the amount of carpet not being sent to landfill, with 85,000 tonnes being recycled and reused or sent for energy recovery. CRUK won the Landfill Diversion Strategy category of Resource Revolution Awards 2013.

Edel Telenzo launched the Hammersmith multi-stripe and updated the colours on Piccadilly, Bakerloo and Mainline, while Mayfair is a 100% wool plain. Forbo’s new Surestep Wood Decibel is designed to provide an R10 slip resistance while offering 17dB impact sound reduction. It is available in 2m, 3m and 4m widths. The Novilux Traffic and Graphic ranges offer a range of features from NoviClean, a top layer treatment that helps to prevent dirt and scuff marks and Aquagrip which means the level of grip is not significantly reduced by spills or splashes. Gaskell debuted Bayswater in three-ply 100% wool with 12 colours in 4m and 5m widths. A new Naturals display stand combines a tombola and lectern. Karndean displayed its latest POS units along with LooseLay, a faster and

easier to fit LVT which requires little or no glue in most installations. Kersaint Cobb unveiled a display stand that shows the carpet by colour with the different products on the same sample card. Simply Oak also has a new display stand while the colour palette of the stripe Beach Hut collection was revamped. The company also has a new website. Kingsmead debuted Kaleidoscope with 10 stripes and three plains. Clean Easy Splendid is a two-ply twist in two weights and nine colours. Manx introduced the polypropylene Sensuous Touch available in three weights and 10 colours. Coastline is a stripe available in seven colours and a 4m width. Regent Twist is available in 4m and 5m widths and two weights while Castle Twist has three weights, 12 colours and 4m and 5m widths. The Eco Style collection of stripes and plains is made from 90% PEP fibre and comes in 4m and 5m widths. Mr Tomkinson introduced Tomkinson Colours with 12 colours and 4m and 5m widths. Its latest display stand accommodates four ranges and storage space. From Penthouse was Springtime, using undyed wool yarn available in nine shades, 40oz and 50oz weights and 4m and 5m widths. Colours, including lavender and grey, were added to Stateside, while the Quartz stripe is available in a 50oz weight. Rama expanded Amore with six plains and four patterned designs while Persian Crown has medallion designs. Regency introduced Carefree Opulence in 20 colours with a lectern stand with reflective visuals in which the stain disappears depending on the viewing angle. The Chiltern heather twist

A 50oz weight was introduced to Innovation and display stands launched. Ulster’s introductions included the two-ply Heritage Twist with a 45oz weight and 24 plains and heathers. A new display stand holds Ulster’s full collection. Victoria unveiled 100% wool Natural Style in eight colours, two styles and 4m and 5m widths. Willis & Gambier At Home takes place at its Peterborough showroom on 4-5 July and will mark the opening of the redesigned showroom. Questions and answers Mark McCann, Cavendish Upholstery sales and marketing director, has some questions for retailers: ‘Are you tired of seeing the same products from the same large anonymous manufacturers sold into every store in your area? Sticking to its principles TCS maintains its company ethos

Next month marks a major milestone for TCS as it celebrates its 15th anniversary on 1 July. In 1998 TCS started out as a leather upholstery supplier but over the years this has been expanded to include the living room, kitchen, bedroom and flooring. ‘Throughout the past 15 years, we have remained loyal to our original company ethos of providing service, quality and value to independent retailers throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland and by sticking to these three

principles we have given a consistency and built confidence with retailers,’ says Thomas Small, TCS md. Small says that while other companies may have replicated its innovations, TCS has led the way in bringing value to retailers and helped them maximise their profits. Heavyweight champion Carpenter says its latest launch is the heaviest PU underlay This summer Carpenter, one of the world’s largest producers of PU underlay, will launch ProStep, designed to be ‘the ultimate’ in heavy rated contract underlay. ProStep has been developed to compete with even the best crumb rubber products. ‘We wanted to create a superior contract product that is a competitively priced, environmentally friendly alternative to crumb rubber and ProStep is the heaviest PU available in the market today,’ says Helen Rowberry, Carpenter national sales manager. Suitable for contract use, ProStep is an 8mm, 180kg per cum density underlay that is suitable for double stick applications. ‘We’re calling it the ultimate professional’s choice because it is. As well as providing videos demonstrating Stroolmount’s range of protection products, the website – www.finchys.com – can be used to encourage the consumer to buy the products at reduced prices. ‘Retailers and fitters should of course contact us for trade prices for our ranges, but we hope that by offering them the opportunity to give their customers an individual discount code it will boost their customer service,’ says Gill Finch, Stroolmount md. ‘In addition a percentage of the sale is then saved for the retailers’ future orders.’ Contract customers have found the service useful. Our products offer this but can also protect you from high insurance claims,’ explains Finch. Stroolmount’s range features products for protecting carpets, vinyl, wood, laminate and tiles. At the heart of the range is the QuickClick Glides collection of products, developed by German firm Wagner Systems. These are permanently screwed to the base of legs and are

available in sizes from 17mm to 50mm and in several pack sizes. Also available are Move It pads to protect floors and make it easier to shift heavy furniture. FLOORING PROTECTION

Six sense underfoot Interfloor is focusing on key areas for underlay Without a quality underlay floors will suffer and Interfloor is focusing on six underlay segments to help drive growth. ‘There is growing demand in six key segments. I define these as premium comfort, premium durability, underfloor heating, heat insulation, sound insulation and wood and laminate,’ says Steve Woodhead, Interfloor marketing director. He describes premium comfort as when the consumer wants outstanding levels of comfort, well above the standard levels of luxury as defined by BS5808. A growing number of Tredaire underlays are up to 65% higher than the conventional standard for luxury, and include Tredaire Sensation, Tredaire Dreamwalk and Tredaire Colours Red. ‘Premium durability applies to those underlays that offer 100% recovery from pressure indentations. Only crumb rubber underlays with densities over 400kg per cum provide this and are ideal for dining rooms and staircases. Duralay System 10, Treadmore and Durafit are tried and tested solutions,’ he says. Underfloor heating underlays allow heat to pass through the flooring efficiently from below so tog values of less than 1.0 are needed. ‘Duralay pioneered this niche with a range of low tog underlays from 0.3 to 0.8. These include Duralay Heatflow Carpet, Duralay Heatflow Wood & Laminate and Duralay King. These products are specially made from sponge rubber as PU

foam is not suitable and should not be used,’ explains Woodhead. Heat insulation underlays reflect the growing interest in products that help to keep living rooms insulated and minimise heating bills. Some of the latest Tredaire PU underlays have tog values between 2.4 and 3.1 – up to 50% better than the traditional products. The highest tog underlays include Tredaire Dreamwalk, Tredaire Sensation and Tredaire Softwalk. Sound insulation underlays for carpets are useful in addressing noise reduction to combat noisy neighbours. Some Tredaire PU and sponge rubber products have decibel ratings of over 40. These include Tredaire Dreamwalk, Tredaire Sensation and Tredaire Colours Red. Woodhead says Duralay was the first manufacturer to develop special noise reduction underlays for wood and laminate floors. Offering up to 30% noise reduction, these 700kg per cum high density sponge rubber underlays include Duralay Silentfloor Gold and Timbermate Excel. ‘It doesn’t take long to find out if one of these segments is of interest to a consumer. If they are then it’s possible to recommend a product with real added value to them that will provide a great selling and profit opportunity for the retailer. A real win-win situation,’ he adds. Splash and polish Durable finishes for bathrooms and wooden flooring Bathroom flooring is more in need of protection than most other rooms in the house, while wood flooring benefits from extra protection to keep it looking good. Imagination surfaces The carpet tile market continues to innovate Balta Group is to launch the Stain Block Home Tiles collection of stain-resistant 50cm x 50cm carpet tiles. The range has four designs: Diamond, Diva, Natural and Vox and a variety of textures, including velours and textured loop and cut piles. The polypropylene tiles are bleach cleanable. Keeping informed Ensuring that Flooring One members are kept up to date is key For Flooring One its annual exhibition, held on 14 May this year, provided the chance to present to its members its plans for the future and to gauge their views. ‘The exhibition is our annual opportunity to show members the full own label collection in its full glory and displayed to its best using our unitary. It is also an opportunity to explain one to one how we came to decisions on the 2013 products and displays,’ says Glenn Harding, Flooring One controller. Flooring One’s core carpet range has been updated with a number of new ranges including the launch of the 100% wool Weston collection of 10 stripes and 11 plains with a suggested retail price of £21.99 per sqm. The Tetbury Twist polypropylene range has had seven

stripes added to the 16 plains all retailing at £13.99 per sqm, while another polypropylene twist, Sandown, has been introduced at a suggested retail price of £20.99 per sqm. Continuing with the theme of stripes Flooring One is introducing an exclusive 40oz wooltwist Harvington Stripe, which is available in four colours and complements 16 heather shades. Flooring One’s SSR collection has also been enhanced by the introduction of a number of higher quality products, particularly two-ply 80% wool twists with a larger choice of colours. Independent rules AIS members gain multiple benefits AIS is the largest buying group of its kind supporting independent retailers in the UK and Republic of Ireland. Furniture makes up about half of AIS buying throughput but this is complemented by related categories such as linens, housewares and its specialist floorcovering division – Flooring One. More than 250 AIS members are located across the UK and Ireland and include highly respected and leading retailers such as Arighi Bianchi, Arnotts, Elys of Wimbledon, Gillies, Glasswells, Jarrold, Sterling Furniture and Stokers. As well as these long established businesses the group regularly attracts new, high quality members such as Dickinsons Furnishers and Wardens. ‘The common thread is that they are all proudly independent, a value that is not compromised by membership but enhanced by it because of the group buying power and industry influence,’ says Peter Mallinson, AIS merchandise director – home. Key to the group’s success are the buying relationships it has with major suppliers, including development of exclusive own brand ranges such as Dreamworld beds and the Bed & Bath linen collection. ‘Add in exclusive branded products from leading suppliers such as G Plan and Parker Knoll and there are many margin enhancing opportunities to help members compete in difficult times,’ Mallinson adds. AIS holds regular buying shows throughout the year for all product areas at Cranmore Park, Solihull. These attract the major brands and are a convenient focal point for members. The Furniture Show, now well-established in January, runs parallel to Interiors UK and attracts some exclusive exhibitors. ‘Whilst access to suppliers and buying benefits are the primary reasons to be a member of AIS, there are many other ways we add value,’ says David Standing, AIS commercial director. help shape the buying and sourcing direction. ● Regional meetings, seminar days and internal communication channels where members can share information and learn from each other. Green tracks Crucial boosts its Laneve offer Crucial Trading has expanded its wool ranges with four new designs, including two using Laneve wool, and introduced the traceable New Zealand wool to several ranges. The scalloped-ripple design of Fuji creates a highly textured and patterned finish and is available in six neutral tones.
