EXHIBITION GUIDE
More than 50,000 people visited on the first day with some 11,000 overseas buyers attending overall
Record numbers The next 3F show, 5-9 September, is looking to build upon the success of the 29th edition in March. The event attracted 119,769 visitors, with 51,216 attending on the first day – both records. The show attracted 11,052 international buyers. ‘We believe the market is turning upward again,’ says Yin Chengzhi, president of Dongguan Famous Furniture Association, the organiser of 3F. ‘Many furniture dealers had held back their purchasing over the past year. The market upbeat has sent out a strong signal to dealers to buy in. The accumulated buying power is released in this 3F, triggering a wave of swift orders.’ Liu Shiling, a furniture retailer from Guangzhou, says: ‘Among all of the furniture shows in China, 3F is the one that best accommodates the needs of furniture dealers in terms of product style, pricing points and number of furniture brands.’ Wang Quan, a retailer from Shanghai, says: ‘3F helps furniture dealers in the way it assembles all the furniture brands who are serious about the domestic furniture market in one place, so chances are high for a dealer to find the perfect match. And since these exhibitors have developed their products for the Chinese market and most of them are willing to

become flexible to work with furniture dealers, the risks are reduced and dealers are more likely to succeed.’ ‘We are happy to see more international buyers in our show,’ says Jacky Fang, 3F show manager. ‘Over the past two years we have been constantly adjusting the product categories on the show to better meet the purchasing needs of international buyers.’ Dongguan, where 3F is held is the centre of Chinese furniture industry accounting for about 60% of the total furniture produced in China. ‘As long as international buyers are
looking for quality export-ready products, 3F is the show for international buyers to see,’ Fang adds. Visit: www.3f.net.cn/e

Seasonal change Ireland’s only furniture and interiors trade event celebrate its 30th year. The Irish Furniture & Interiors Fair, at the RDS, Dublin from 6-8 October, is aiming to exorcise the economic ghosts of the past few years with new features, new dates, a brighter venue and lots of new furniture. After dialogue with the industry, the event has moved from spring to autumn, allowing suppliers to preview furniture ranges in advance of Christmas and January events. The show has heeded calls for a complementary backdrop to interiors products by relocating to RDS’s main hall. With its historic feel, floor to ceiling whitewashed stone walls, Victorian metalwork and balconies, the venue will enhance furniture and interiors products on display. The floorplan retains a Central

Interiors UK organiser UBM will launch its first furniture and interiors show in south-east Asia in September, with Southeast Asia Furniture & Interiors Import-Export Exhibition (SEAFIE) taking place in Kuala Lumpur from 13-16 September. The Putra World Trade Centre show will complement the Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF), held in March, and other UBM shows, notably Furniture China – the world’s largest furniture exhibition – Index Fairs in India and Interiors UK. The show will cover 45,000sqm and feature the international mid to high end brands of home and office furniture, interior design products and soft furnishings. SEAFIE is targeted to draw 300 exhibitors and 20,000 buyers. The show will be organised by the team behind MIFF, which has a proven track record and in-depth market knowledge. ‘The timing is ideal for the launch of
SEAFIE in light of the changing market environment. September is a key second buying season for furniture and interiors buyers worldwide these days,’ says Tan Chin Huat, MIFF chairman. Another booster for SEAFIE is the expanding south-east Asian market itself because of its 600m population and increasing middle class customers. While furniture and fittings exports from south-east Asia have been growing, imports have also increased significantly due to more purchasing power and demand for branded high quality lifestyle products. ‘There will be lots of trendy purchases and exciting deals for contract buyers, property developers, project managers and interior decorators. Kuala Lumpur’s strategic location in the heart of southeast Asia and excellent air and sea links will make SEAFIE a leading platform for import and export to and from the region,’ Tan adds. EXHIBITION GUIDE
More than 1,300 companies will take part in Domotex with 40,000 visitors expected
Setting standards Things are looking good for Domotex 2014, with organiser Deutsche Messe reporting strong exhibitor registration seven months from opening day. ‘Given the strong response to date, we’re feeling very optimistic about next January,’ says Jochen Kockler, Deutsche Messe management board member. ‘The solid registration levels and the high proportion of exhibitors from outside Germany testify to Domotex’s position as a key fixture in the calendar of the international carpet and floorcoverings industry. The pleasingly high number of companies that have registered so far is a good sign both for Domotex and for the industry as a whole,’ he says. Domotex will have a new format that will put the emphasis on the innovations, expertise and skills of the exhibitors and enable them to more effectively engage

with key visitors, Kockler adds. The 11-14 January show will see the return of the Wood Flooring Summit. Having premiered in 2012, Berry Floor, Boen Parkett, Egger, Fetim, Hamberger, Kaindl, Krone Group Switzerland, Meisterwerke, Parador and Tarkett are among those already confirmed for next year. The show will also include exclusive handmade carpet and rug creations by some of the world’s most innovative designers, including Creative Matters, Haynes Robinson, Hossein Rezvani, Jan Kath, Obeetee, Rug Star and Wool and Silk Rugs. The top end of the carpet design world will showcase an extensive array of handmade carpets and rugs. Displays will include a spectacular celebration of creations for lovers of fine design and exquisite craftsmanship. Other special displays, such as the
FAST FACTS Domotex Hannover Messe, Hannover 11-14 January 2014 www.domotex.de Carpet Design Awards, will add to the diversity of the show. ‘The Carpet Design Awards set the standard in handmade carpet quality and design. The innovations on show at the Carpet Design Awards displays are definitive of the must-have colours, patterns and materials for the coming season,’ says Kockler. The Skilled Trades Hub will focus on the latest flooring technology and techniques, along with demonstrations and presentations. Visit: www.domotex.de

Trooping of the colours This year’s Discovery Zone at Meet only Original Designs (MoOD) will be themed around colour, based on the trend colours from eMOTION, the MoOD trend forecast. For the first time, the contract range will also be displayed in the Discovery Zone, in hall 7. Here visitors will find the sample banks, the Blue Drops, the winners of the Blue Drop Awards, the trends (eMOTION), colours and innovations. In addition, this year the Innovation Platform will be even bigger. Last year, four partners worked on the selection: MatériO, CELC Masters of Linen, Trendease International and Global Color Research. In September, the platform will be expanded to include two new partners. ‘Because MoOD is Meet only Original Designs and remains the largest and Brussels Expo, Brussels especially the most 10-12 September specialised trade www.moodbrussels.com show when it comes to upholstery fabric, window coverings and wallcoverings, MoOD is still the pre-eminent place where textile professionals buy the most exceptional textiles,’ says Patrick Geysels, MoOD general manager. ‘MoOD remains the only place in the world where only original designs are offered. Unlike at the other trade shows, here you will find only the companies who own the design they are offering. They create and produce on their own looms, 70% of which are located in Europe,’ he says. Importantly our fitted barriers make our lift and recline chairs more aesthetically pleasing on the eye by hiding the mechanism and electronics. Questions and answers Mark McCann, Cavendish Upholstery sales and marketing director, has some questions for retailers: ‘Are you tired of seeing the same products from the same large anonymous manufacturers sold into every store in your area? Experiencing brand margin erosion from aggressive Internet offers? Getting long deliveries due to suppliers’ commitments to bigger customers?’ He also has some answers. Following the successful launch of products in January, Cavendish is introducing the Capsule Collection. The range has been developed for the independent retailer who needs an exclusive range of British-made upholstery that is not saturated in the marketplace or comes with brand margin erosion, and is on a sensible lead time. It offers a range of sofas in leather and fabric with retail price points of £699 to £1,499. The Capsule Collection has been developed from feedback gained by national sales manager Nick Gigg and his team during their customer visits, taking into account size, configuration and consumer preferences in colour, shape and comfort. ‘Our upholstery is made to exacting standards, so much so that every piece of furniture comes with our 10-year frame guarantee which is prominent on our new swing tickets to reassure the consumer. We do not have imported lines: all our furniture is made in our factory in Chorley, Lancashire. We can offer retailer exclusivity by area, helping to protect and maintain margin during these challenging trading conditions. All our bestselling lines are on four weeks delivery and everything else within six weeks,’ he says. Cavendish’s new showvan will be touring retailers from this month, showing the products to customers who are too busy to attend exhibitions. ‘Our philosophy is simple: the highest quality, best price and quickest delivery,’ McCann adds.
