EDITOR’S COMMENT

Andrew Kidd EDITOR

A new chapter After almost six decades, Lord Harris is calling time on his career in the interiors retail industry. Will Carpetright take a different path under his successor? Lord Harris’s decision to retire from Carpetright (at the second attempt) in September (see p6) marks the end of an era and the start of a new chapter for the chain. Shareholders will be hoping Wilf Walsh’s recruitment will prove to be more successful than that of Darren Shapland. In replacing a man with almost six decades in the interiors business, Walsh – who has spent most of his working life in the gambling industry– faces a stiff learning curve in understanding the market and products he will find himself among next month. Walsh has been praised for his people, leadership, strategy and digital skills. Lord Harris has also said Walsh reminds him of

himself, with an eye for detail and a preference for stores rather than head office. If Walsh has a career at the flooring and beds chain anything like Lord Harris has enjoyed over the years, then shareholders will be delighted. It will be fascinating to see if Carpetright under Walsh continues with the discounting business model it has come to embody or if he can use his experience in consumer facing businesses to create a new one. We wish Lord Harris a happy retirement with his passions of showjumping and education. With members of the Metro buying group voting against an alliance with Flooring One (see p12), consolidation appears to be off the agenda for the time being. Their decision shows that retailers have no loss of independence when a member of a group. If you haven’t voted already, you’ll find the final Interiors Monthly Awards 2014 entry form on p22, or you can download the form from www.interiorsmonthly.co.uk. On the topic of winners, the 12 month Interiors Monthly subscription winner at May Design Series was Peter Morris, Morris Interiors, Thorpe Bay, Essex.

Carpetright bets on Walsh as Harrises set departures After 56 years, Lord Harris has called time on his retail career. He will step down from Carpetright’s board after its AGM on 4 September. His son Martin, group development director, will also leave that day. Wilf Walsh joins the company on 21 July as its chief executive and has a background in the betting and gaming industry (see box). Graham Harris, chief operating officer, has left. Lord Harris says he will spend more time on his educational foundation, which backs 27 schools in London, and showjumping. The chain has issued three profit warnings since October when Darren Shapland, chief executive, left suddenly, with Lord Harris reverting to executive chairman. Lord Harris told the Daily Telegraph that Martin had become ‘very disillusioned’ after Shapland’s departure and felt let down after playing a key role in hiring Shapland from Sainsbury’s. Graham Harris, who is not a family member, was then promoted from trading director to coo, but this role became redundant after Walsh’s recruitment. ‘I am pleased that the nonexecutives have found someone with more experience,’ says Lord Harris. Walsh, he says, reminds him of

himself. ‘He is a store man not a head office man. He is a details man. Wilf has asked me to be an adviser one, two or three days a week so I’m not leaving completely. I’m a hands-on person and my best job is not as chairman,’ he told The Guardian.’ Lord Harris says Carpetright was turning the corner and that store revamps in the UK were paying off. ‘I think it’s in a good state. We’ve done 260 of our stores and they are looking good. The market is slightly improving. Europe has been our problem and we have put a new managing director out there. He’s doing a great job and you will see a much better result in the next 12 months,’ he says. Walsh says: ‘Carpetright is a great brand and I am looking forward to working with the team to drive profitability and share going forward. Lord Harris has 56 years in the carpet business and will be a hard act to follow, but the market-leading position he has built for the business is an excellent place from which to start.’ Lord Harris founded Carpetright in 1988 after selling Harris Queensway for £69m. The 71-year-old first became involved in retail at the age of 15, when his father’s death meant he was left in charge of a market stall and two shops in Peckham, London.

Wilf Walsh CV June 2010 to present Gala Coral Group non-executive director. May 2012 Fortuna Entertainment Group chairman. Earlier he was a vice-chairman of the management board and for the first half of 2012 he was interim ceo. In 2010 he helped Fortuna secure its listings on the Prague and Warsaw stock exchanges. In 2009, he became responsible for corporate strategy. September 2000 – September 2008 Coral md. February 1999-October 2000 HMV Germany md. March 1996 – February 1999 HMV operations director.

Cameron springs surprise on Silentnight

Q&A session with David Cameron

Interiors Monthly June 2014

David Cameron has revealed that he sleeps on an 18-year-old mattress, bought for him as a wedding gift by his mother-in-law. The Prime Minister revealed during a visit to Silentnight that he has not changed his mattress since he and his wife Samantha were married. ‘It was a huge honour to welcome David Cameron to Silentnight to see behind the scenes at our factory. As a UK

manufacturer that is committed to quality and service, it was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the great work that we are doing, whilst giving our staff the public recognition that they deserve,’ says Steve Freeman, Silentnight md. ‘The fact that he has not changed his mattress for 18 years came as a surprise to everyone in the question and answer session. We have of course offered to advise him on his next purchase.’

ASA tells Mallusk to drop advert A radio advertisement in which a man goes shopping for a carpet instead of watching football on TV and drinking beer has landed a carpet retailer in trouble with the Advertising Standards Authority. In the advertisement for Antrim retailer Mallusk Carpets the sound of a can being opened is heard and a male voice says: ‘On the couch, drinking beer, watching football, what could be better?’ In reply, a female voice then says: ‘The massive sale at Mallusk Carpets, that’s what.’ The male voice replies: ‘But what about my football?’ and is then told: ‘Well, maybe you’ll score later on, especially after I net a bargain.’ The male voice then says: ‘Yeah, come to think of it, we did get a great deal at the last sale at Mallusk Carpets, where’s the car keys?’ The sound of a bunch of keys being picked up is then heard. The complainant challenged whether the reference to alcohol and driving was irresponsible. Mallusk Carpets told the ASA it believed it was clear from the narrative that the male voice was

looking forward to drinking a beer. They said that the man got as far as opening the can, yet did not get to drink even a sip due to his partner asserting that they should go to the sale. It said there was no irresponsible behaviour because he did not drink any alcohol and instead went shopping. In its ruling, the ASA acknowledged that the advertisement might have given the impression that the man had not yet started drinking the beer. However, it considered the advertisement was ambiguous as to whether or not the man had started drinking and considered that the sound of the can being opened along with the man’s use of the phrase ‘drinking beer’ to describe what he was presently doing suggested that he had consumed alcohol. Because it linked alcohol with driving, the ASA concluded that the advert was irresponsible. Mallusk was told not to use the advertisement again and not to link alcohol with driving in future advertisements.

Rugs partners Trial date set for Leeds furniture store boss accused of murder

GoodWeave has launched an industry partner scheme, with online retailer Modern Rugs its first member. UK retailers that buy GoodWeave labelled rugs from certified licensees are eligible to join. In return for promoting GoodWeave labelled rugs, industry supporters benefit from increased market exposure via the use of the GoodWeave Industry Supporter logo, links to the GoodWeave website, access to sales tools such as consumer brochures, and listings on the Talking Rugs consumer blog website. There is an annual fee of £420 for the scheme. Modern Rugs recently launched a range of GoodWeave labelled Kilim rugs from licensee Esprit.

Furniture retailer John Butler will face trial in October for the murder of his estranged wife. Butler, boss of Kettley’s Furniture Centre in Yeadon, Leeds, is charged with the murder of Pauline Butler, 61, who was found dead at a terraced house in Cherry Lea Court, Rawdon, Leeds on 14 April. Butler, 62, of Larkfield Road, Rawdon, Leeds, appeared by video link to Leeds Crown Court last month for a preliminary hearing. The court was told the estimated length of a trial is five days and a date of 13 October was set. Remanding Butler in custody, Judge Geoffrey Marson QC told him he would

be brought to court for the plea and case management hearing in July and by that time must have prepared a defence statement. He said if granted bail he must remain in regular contact with his solicitors. The Kettley’s store received national attention in 2012 when it appeared in the BBC’s The Fixer series in which celebrity consultant Alex Polizzi helped to modernise the business. Butler’s son David has vowed to continue with the business. ‘I’m confident the business will survive. We all get on very well, we have staff who are very good. It’s brought us closer together.’

NEWS Metro voted against teaming up with Flooring One

More losses for Feather & Black Losses trebled at bedroom furniture chain Feather and Black last year as it was forced to discount to clear excess stock. The chain saw a pre-tax loss of £508,000 in 2012 increase to £1.616m in the year to 29 September 2013. According to the company’s recently filed accounts: ‘The result for the year was disappointing with the loss for the period significantly impacted by the clearance of excess stock at reduced margins which allowed the company to restructure the product range. ‘The marketing strategy

Victoria Carpets’ veteran Terry Danks has been promoted to the board of parent Victoria. Danks, 66, has been named as finance director, 29 years after joining the carpet maker as chief accountant. He joined in 1985 and has been responsible for both the accounting and IT functions within the company since then. In 1989 be became Victoria Carpets finance director and Victoria company secretary in 1993. Serene Furnishings has appointed Aurimas Ratkus as warehouse operative and Sophie Andrews as warehouse administrator.

and activity has also been revised and although the company continues to operate in an improved but difficult retail environment, the restructuring is delivering an improved order intake.’ It also said that the directors expect a recovery and profits to be made in the medium term. Sales dipped from £22.6m to £21.9m. The accounts also show that £39,000 was paid in compensation for loss of office, thought to be for the chain’s co-founder Adam Black who stepped down in March 2013.

Metro says no to alliance Members of the Metro flooring buying group have voted against a proposal to combine with fellow buying group Flooring One. The vote, at its AGM during the recent Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show, was described by Martin Harvey, Metro chairman, as calm and business-like. ‘Most members had decided beforehand and when it was put to the vote

the members were against it by a small majority.’ He says: ‘You can’t stand still and have to look forward. It will be disappointing for some people but I’m hopeful we won’t lose any members as a result. ‘Therefore the new board comprising of Paul Ivory, John Keyworth, Peter Lynas and myself will be working to reform the group in line with that independent vision.’

Retail sales shine during April UK retail sales climbed by 6.9% in April compared with the same month in 2013, the largest increase since March 2004. The Office for National Statistics also said retail sales were higher than expected, rising by 1.3% between March and April. Food sales during the late Easter holiday

made a significant contribution to the overall figure, it said. They were 6.3% higher in April against a year earlier, and 3.6% up on March. Non-food sales rose by 6.5% compared with a year ago, but were down 0.4% on the month. Quarterly retail sales have now grown for 14 consecutive months.

Full house for South West Furniture Show This year’s South West Furniture Show has sold out, more than three months ahead of the event, thanks to new exhibitors. The success of the 2013 show encouraged new exhibitors including Sitbest, Mark Webster Designs, Furnico and Rowico to the show

alongside previous exhibitors including Sherborne Upholstery, Alston’s Upholstery, Celebrity and Kingstown. The South West Furniture Show takes place on 16-18 September at The Sedgemoor Auction Centre, Bridgwater, Somerset.

Your questions answered Helen Kershaw, Guardsman head of marketing, answers your questions on product protection

Q

We’ve been quite successful at explaining the benefits of product protection to customers but we’ve occasionally had customers come back after the sale who’ve not bought the warranty who now want to. Can I sell it to them post-sale? Protection plans are a regulated insurance product and are classified as a connected contract sale. This means the protection plan must be linked to the sale of the item of furniture. These are best sold alongside the furniture but retailers can sell them post-sale right up until the time the furniture is delivered to the customer’s home. After delivery it is unfortunately too late, so it’s important to make sure your staff are trained appropriately and introduce the subject of protection plans as early as possible in the sales process. Our research shows that when the benefits of a protection plan are properly explained, 70% of consumers see the value in purchasing one.

Q A

A customer’s dining table has been badly faded by the sun. She has bought a replacement, but is there anything that can prevent such fading happening again? One of the most destructive elements to wood furniture can be the harmful effect of the sun’s rays, which fade wood, often to an irreversible extent. So for those hesitating to place beautiful wooden tables and chairs in sunny spots or conservatories, we have developed a better solution than tablecloths or UV screens with the new Guardsman UV Protection Wood Polish. Containing UV inhibitors, Guardsman UV Protection Wood Polish can be used on wood all over the house to help protect it from the sun’s rays. It also delivers a rich, clean, low-lustre shine which enhances the natural beauty of wood. While most spray polishes contain silicones which cause wood to bloom, Guardsman UV Protection Wood Polish contains no waxes, abrasives or silicones, helping to keep wooden furniture looking stunning for a long time.

All Sealy Hybrid beds contain Geltex, a unique, gel-infused foam that is quite simply the most advanced sleeping material available. It has all the pressure relieving properties of traditional memory foam but provides a level of "push back" body support that memory foam lacks. It also has an open cell structure that allows for far greater breathability for the sleeper, allowing body temperature to dissipate quickly and effectively. All Hybrid models also feature Adaptive technology - a ‘dynamic response’ textile that reacts to temperature and moisture. Hydro-functional polymers change shape, boosting evaporation and helping to maintain a constant temperature throughout the night. Hybrid - a unique fusion of Geltex, Adaptive Technology and Springs. How cool is that?

There is increased awareness of the importance of getting a good night’s sleep and a lot of this is about having the right bed to sleep on, according to Sealy. If you sleep deeply, your mind and body are fitter and healthier and, therefore, you tend to be less stressed and happier. Over the past few months, the players in the Burnley FC squad have been trialling Sealy’s Hybrid bed containing Geltex – a unique fusion of memory foam with a new elasticised gel. This offers all the benefits and support of memory foam but since it’s springy as well, has improved comfort. This layer of Geltex is set over thousands of specially designed standard pocket and mini pocket springs. The mattress is enclosed in material that contains Adaptive to wick away moisture and help regulate the body’s temperature, even through bedlinen, so the sleeper rests in a perfect temperature, comfortable throughout both the summer and winter. Mark Howard is head of sports science at the newly promoted club. Prior to joining the Clarets, he worked at other Premier League clubs and is a firm believer in the importance of deep sleep as part of looking after the health and wellbeing of his playing squad. ‘Just as the right exercise and nutrition are essential for players, so is sleep, and I believe the quality of sleep directly contributes to the quality of their fitness and sharpness. As far as the footballers under my care are

24

Interiors Monthly June 2014

concerned, ensuring they get plenty of sleep – especially before a match – is crucial, otherwise they certainly won’t perform at their peak level,’ he says. ‘And if there is an evening fixture, I always recommend the guys go to bed in the afternoon for some serious shut-eye so they are at the top of their game for the kick-off later. The temperature, support and comfort of your bed is so important and these brand new Hybrid beds from Sealy have been just great. The guys in the team love them and so do I if I know they are getting a really good night’s sleep.’ Neil Robinson, Sealy marketing director, says: ‘As we all know, the Burnley players did really well this season and have been rewarded with promotion to the Premier League, so they can spend the summer watching the World Cup and getting some well earned rest… and perhaps dreaming on their wonderful new Hybrid beds of what they can achieve next season when they find themselves facing the might of the big teams. ‘Sealy’s mission is for everyone to be a deeper sleeper and have sweet dreams. We’ve been delighted to help support manager Sean Dyche and the guys at Burnley and are thrilled they’ve been promoted. Hopefully they’ll be dreaming of big success in the Premier League next season on their new beds and we’ll all be cheering them on.’ Visit: www.sealy.co.uk

Second factory set to reduce lead times for Furnico Upholstery producer experiencing high volume of orders With orders reaching a new high for Furnico, the Lancashire manufacturer has invested more than £500,000 in a second factory in order to meet demand. David Winter, Furnico joint-md, says the move will reduce lead times and create jobs. Furnico has been established in the UK for more than 30 years and the company is now in what many would see as an enviable position. Over recent years the firm has made a raft of improvements to its production facilities and service offering, culminating in a significant increase in orders. ‘Our order books are full. And while we are delighted that our products are proving so popular, it has caused an increase in our lead times which is causing understandable difficulties,’ says Winter. ‘We’d like to thank our retailers for their patience with us and to reassure them that reducing lead times is our top priority. ‘We are making investments in order to increase our production capacity now and into the future, which should bring our lead times

28

back to four to five weeks in time for the busy back end of the year.’

Factory fit-out underway Furnico is currently in the fit-out stage of

launching its second factory in Nelson – just a short distance from its established facility in Colne. Around 35 factory-floor jobs will be created at the new factory, which will produce 200-250 suites a week. This will increase the

firm’s production by up to one third, from its current capacity of 750 suites a week. The factory is due to open in early July with production to start as soon as possible. Winter explains that a combination of factors has led to the increase in demand for Furnico products and that the firm has been planning the second factory for a number of months. ‘In 2011 we introduced a lean manufacturing system at our Nelson factory, which took around 18 months to complete. This was a complex procedure, but the results of the changes included a more efficient and costeffective production process, a better quality product and fewer after-sales service issues. We were already well known and well respect-

ed in the UK, but our reputation grew and with it so did our customer base. We released new designs, which have been really well received and, at the same time, there has been more of a swing towards a fashion for fabric upholstery, which again has led to an increase in orders.’

Benefits for independents More recently, Furnico unveiled an improved service offering for independent retailers by launching a sub-brand, Furnico Independent Sofas, under the managing directorship of Darren Hargreaves. ‘Darren has done a fantastic job ensuring our independent products meet with the commercial needs of retailers and the designs are

proving very popular. The fact that they are exclusive products is a big selling point for high street stores as it means margins do not get squeezed by the larger groups,’ adds Winter. All Furnico products come with a range of added value benefits. As well as having a 10-year limited warranty as standard, each suite also comes with free of charge service backup, offering a hassle-free solution for retailers faced with any service issues. The product ranges also feature high quality materials such as Reflex foam and Encore filling, as well as offering a selection of thousands of fabric options, to leave customers spoilt for choice. ‘As well as offering the best quality products, we want our offering to retailers to be the best it can be, and we will be aiming to provide preferential lead times as a part of that. Our total investment in the new factory will be more than half a million pounds, which we hope will demonstrate to retailers that we very much value their business and are making efforts to reduce our lead times as quickly as possible,’ explains Winter. ‘We hope that the position will be rectified in time for exhibiting at the Manchester Furniture Show in July, where we will be happy to speak to retailers about the improvements we have made and introduce them to the new product lines we will be launching,’ he adds.

The Flooring Show Yorkshire

EXHIBITION GUIDE

More than 2,300 visitors attended in 2013

There will be two demo zones this year

Growing interest A high level of exhibitor interest in 2014’s The Flooring Show is evidence that the event is on course for expansion as the economy recovers. Changing the dates to later in September rather than the traditional late August/early September period is also expected to enhance the appeal of the show to a wider range of exhibitors and visitors. Held in its 51st year at its traditional home in Harrogate, The Flooring Show 2013 attracted just under 120 exhibiting brands from 12 countries, occupying around 3,000sqm of floorspace in four halls. Some 2,300 trade visitors from 17 countries attended, including about 1,300 flooring retailers and distributors – broadly similar to the previous year’s footfall. ‘Space sales growth for 2014 is very pleasing; with three months still to run, firmly contracted exhibition space already comfortably exceeds the 2013 show total. New enquiries are coming through on a daily basis, and a number of the halls are now full, or virtually full,’ says Paul Stott, co-organiser. Master Weaver is making a welcome return to the show, and other brands recently booking include Adam Carpets, Bembe; Callavi; Ardex UK; Merryfield; Karpet King; Fair Packaging; Earthwerks; Ambassador Antalis Packaging; Carpet Gripper Direct; Serdim Hali; Tuplex; CPS Labels and Quick-Step Academy. ‘Another interesting feature is the strong showing by Chinese companies;

level of support for 2015 from both visitors and exhibitors’, says Laraine Janes, show co-director. Theresa Raymond, show co-director, adds: ‘Our decision to maintain the traditional time and location has been completely vindicated and we are already planning to make the show considerably bigger in 2016. We’re already struggling to accommodate everyone who wants to exhibit next January.’ Next year will be the 25th consecutive year that a furniture exhibition has been held during January at the NEC.

to beat,’ says Monika Lubkowska-Jonas, LSA International creative director. EXHIBITION GUIDE

Face-to-face Although doing business digitally has gained interest in recent years, Meet only Original Designs pays attention to doing business face-to-face. Networks are best created when people physically meet each other. MoOD fulfils two tasks here. First, MoOD is a compact, clearly readable trade show with a direct business style. It occupies a unique position where all exhibitors are producers and owners of their creations and so are a direct contact point for the development or adaptation of products. Second, MoOD provides the right visitor, thanks to a product range that encompasses everything, from design (Indigo) to threads (MoOD Yarns) to collections in upholstery, window and wall coverings that can be situated in the middle to the highest segment. In September, MoOD announced a move to hall 5, the Patio, and hall 8 of Brussels Expo. The exhibitors have been grouped as much as possible according to their specialisation, so visitors can plan their appointments. The projects are divided over the halls. The most striking is the trend forum at the entrance of hall 5. The overarching theme Attention! includes three sub-themes: Borderline, Damnation, and the Power of Play. The sample banks will also be set up by the entrance to hall 5 providing a brief overview of the show. The Blue Drop selection has become a walk of fame and this year there will be a visitors award. The show takes over halls 5 and 8 and the Patio

Rooms of Integrity and Style Carpet sells on colour and style. However there is increasing demand for integrity and for brands that show their origin. Wools of New Zealand has been leading the sustainability charge for some time. Being sustainable is not just about having a fibre from a natural source, being truly sustainable means delivering products that have a social, ethical and eco conscience. The carpet buying public is very aware of false claims on not only pricing but also on what is actually in the product and who made the product. Delivering the ultimate in sustainability does not alone sell carpets. The first thing to get right is colour and style. To that end, WNZ employs a team of design and carpet specialists who work with our partners to develop market-leading products. A recent success has been Crucial Trading’s

Biscayne Stripe by Crucial Trading in Laneve wool

move to put all of its 100% New Zealand wool products under the Laneve banner. Crucial Trading worked with the WNZ creative team, headed by Joanna Ramsden, to create Biscayne Stripe. Flock Carpet’s range of luxury Axminster and sculptured tufted effects are all developed by the WNZ creative team to ensure that the products are the ultimate in design as well as being ethically produced in line with Flock’s ethos. WNZ picked up multiple awards for innovation in carpet design at Domotex in January and it continues to push the boundaries, guiding brand partners towards a more stylish and profitable future. The team works from the farm, right through the value chain, and can pull together the right fibre, spinning, tufting and weaving to deliver exceptional style and integrity but also with great efficiency and value. The 100% wool products that qualify for WNZ’s Laneve brand are promoted on a dedicated UK website: www.laneve.co.uk. Also listed on the website are high-quality retailers who have joined WNZ as Premier Partners Showrooms.

The full glory Its annual exhibition is an important event for Flooring One Flooring One used the show to present to its members its plans for the future and to gauge their views. It also provided the opportunity to display its full product range with the updated rug offer of which a quarter of the range has been revised. The past year has seen more companies become suppliers to the buying group, such as Meister and Parador for laminate and Earthwerks for LVT. The group has also been developing its POS materials, with a stair unit and increased its collection of manufacturer-produced units that can be used for Flooring One ranges. Wool Owners Warranty and the Carpet Foundation’s website scheme were promoted to members, and a new updated carpet care brochure in two different styles and personalised for each member is now available in a new convenient compact size. Hi-Performa, a soft-contract range of polypropylene carpets was also introduced. ‘The show is very important to the group and the members as it is the only time they are able to see the full product range in all of its glory, while meeting the team and their fellow members to discuss what it happening with their business and the market,’ says Glenn Harding, Flooring One controller. ‘Such discussions are a vital part of what we can help members with so they can make the maximum use of being a Flooring One member while at the same time retaining their independence.’ Flooring One, tel: 0121 683 1426
