EDITOR’S COMMENT

Andrew Kidd EDITOR

Not on the high street Ikea’s small store format trials doesn’t mean it’s going to be coming to your town centre anytime soon Judging by some of the headlines relating to Ikea’s plans to trial small store formats, you’d be easily forgiven for thinking the chain was planning a branch on every high street (see p6). But it won’t. And there’s one overriding reason why not: parking is limited on the majority of high streets, which is why the forthcoming Norwich store is on a retail park next to a ring road. Can you imagine the chaos of scores of shoppers turning up to collect their new Stocksund sofa or Trysil bedroom furniture only to find the store’s two parking spaces are already occupied and a traffic warden is processing the first parking fine? No, high streets are not going to be home to small Ikea stores but retail parks, be they

edge of town or elsewhere, probably will be. I can imagine a network of regional large stores acting as showrooms where shoppers can see the full range supported by local click and collect centres, rather than shoppers lugging their purchases to the council car park. So farewell to May Design Series (see p10). Trying to get the UK furniture industry to move from the NEC in January to Excel in May has proved to be one of the least successful exhibition ideas of recent years. Congratulations to Dids Macdonald on her richly deserved OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List (see p14). The protection designers now have (and should have had decades ago) is largely thanks to the tireless efforts of Macdonald and her colleagues at a time when politicians had little or no interest in the subject. After what seems eons, finally Balta’s ownership has been settled, where private equity firm Lone Star is buying out private equity firm Doughty Hanson, Filip Balcaen and its management (see p10). I’m now off to count your votes in the Interiors Monthly Awards 2015, the winners of which will be revealed in the next issue.

Ikea to trial smaller format Norwich is to be the location of the first of three trial Ikea small store formats, as it looks to be more accessible to customers. The chain plans to open a 19,000sqft store on the Sweet Briar Retail Park, off the city’s outer ring road this autumn. Customers will be able to view some products while placing orders or collecting from the store. ‘It is less than a 10th of the size, so not everything which is in a normal store will be there. There will be some products on display and there will be a lot of support for people wanting to purchase products. There will be opportunities to order and collect goods and there will also be a café in the store,’ says Jack Jackson, Ikea order and collection development manager. Two further trial formats are being developed for the UK, which the chain hopes to have running by next autumn, alongside three overseas trials. Ikea says shoppers can make up to eight visits when buying bedrooms or kitchens, which from Norwich involves a four-hour round journey to Lakeside or Milton Keynes. The Norwich store will act primarily as a planning studio alongside the collection facility. ‘Customers will have the opportunity to touch and test the product range and will be able to collect orders made

online or in the store. The Norwich Order and Collection Point will also include a café and will have a limited range of products that customers can take home on the day,’ it says. Ikea’s last UK store opening was in 2009 in Southampton. It is planning to open four large stores in Reading, Greenwich, Sheffield and Exeter, with the Reading branch expected to open by next summer.

The BFM has paid tribute to its outgoing chairman John Alston, after he stood down following the sale of Alstons Upholstery. At the association’s board meeting last month Alston relinquished the role he has held for two and a half years. To celebrate his 40 years in the industry and 12 as a director of the BFM, a small luncheon was held after the board meeting at Furniture Makers’ Hall. Invited guests included George Mitchell, past BFM chairman, Richard Ranklin and Charles Vernon. Ranklin and Vernon were both part of the BFM Young Managers group with John and David Alston a quarter of a century ago. Matt O’Flynn, Collins and Hayes md and new BFM chairman, praised his predecessor’s work for which he was presented with an Award for Excellence. Lone Star set to become Balta private equity owner Carpet and rug manufacturer Balta is to have a new private equity owner after the terms of a sale were agreed. The deal is expected to be completed at the end of August. Lone Star Funds has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Balta Group from Doughty Hanson, Filip Balcaen and the group’s management for an undisclosed sum. Doughty Hanson bought the company from its family

owners in August 2004 and owned a 70% stake. The founding family and management held the balance. Balta reported sales of €520m and EBITDA of €64.9m in 2014. ‘We are proud of how well Balta has performed, with EBITDA in 2014 growing by more than 20% compared with 2013. We have enjoyed working with management on further investing in the company’s manufacturing capabilities, particularly in Turkey, on product innovation and on improving operational efficiency and are delighted that Balta is in such good shape for the next stage of its development,’ says John Gemmell, a principal at Doughty Hanson. ‘We are delighted to be embarking on the next phase of our growth ambitions with Lone Star, who share our vision of driving profitable growth by delivering superior product design, creativity, quality and service for our customers. As the company moves forward, I am confident that we will do so from a position of strength. We will continue to build on our successes by innovating, enhancing and growing our business globally through continued strategic investments in Belgium and Turkey as well as through targeted acquisitions,’ says Hendrik Deruyck, Balta Group ceo.

Loaf confirms its slice of high street Online retailer Loaf has confirmed its first physical store will open in September or October this year. The 7,500sqft Loaf Shack will be on the site of the former Battersea Furniture City store at Queenstown Road, London. ‘We want customers to feel relaxed enough to kick-off their shoes, put their feet up and experience why we’re dubbed “the sultans of snug”. In fact, I’d call it less of a showroom and more of a slowroom,’ says Charlie Marshall, Loaf founder.

The store will contain several interactive areas including an ice cream parlour, chillout area and mattress testing section. ‘Back when we launched there weren’t many dedicated online retailers for just beds – they tended to be physical shops with websites added. The opportunity for us then was to sell beautiful products faster and cheaper than the high street. Today it’s no longer just about price, it’s increasingly about quality, service and

brand allegiance. Loaf’s move to bricks and clicks is all about reaffirming our brand and giving customers a fantastic experience,’ adds Marshall.

Organiser pulls the plug on May Design Series There will be no more May Design Series exhibitions. After three editions, organiser UBM says it will concentrate on its Decorex, Sleep, Ecobuild, kbb Birmingham and kbb London shows. ‘We’ve decided to cancel May Design Series and put our efforts into our niche market events as our exhibitors and

visitors have informed us they want a more curated experience. In a world of information overload, our visitors need a focused event that exhibits the best, and new products and thinking within that sector, and takes a deep dive into the future of the sector, engaging with new ideas and trends and networking

opportunities within that niche of the industry,’ says Alison Jackson, UBM EMEA Built Environment portfolio director. Over the past two years visitor numbers at Sleep rose by 10% and 8% for Decorex while kbb Birmingham 2014 had its largest number of exhibitors and Ecobuild saw 5% growth in March.

Dids Macdonald awarded OBE for IP protection work Dids Macdonald, Anti Copying in Design (ACID) ceo, has been awarded an OBE for services to the design industry in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. ‘I am immensely proud of this recognition and honoured to be awarded an OBE. This highlights the importance of intellectual property that underpins all successful design brands, of which there are so many within the furnishing industry. I am determined to continue to raise awareness about ACID’s ongoing campaign “Commission it, Don’t Copy it”,’ says Macdonald. She co-founded ACID in 1996 as a voluntary based round table action group to create a plan to help small companies conquer global copyists. Before that she was Dids Macdonald

a partner in a successful small company designing and producing decorative accessories. But with success came blatant copying every time a new product was launched and she nearly lost her business several times. At the time there was no organisation to help designers protect their intellectual property. ACID is now recognised as the leading UK design and intellectual property organisation, helping thousands of designers to protect their work. After ACID’s 15-year campaign, the Intellectual Property Act became law on 1 October 2014, making the intentional infringement of a registered design a criminal offence.

Q

One of my customers is considering buying a sofa from us along with a warranty. He asked if the warranty would cover the sofa’s frame: he weighs about 25stone and has broken a previous sofa. He also wanted to know if he would be covered if it needed repairing a second time?

Autumn

LONG POINT 1 4 th -16 th Septem ber 2015

In this case your customer would need to purchase a furniture protection plan that includes structural cover. The furniture would first be covered for failure of the frame under the manufacturer’s warranty and then once the warranty has expired, the Guardsman insurance protection plan would cover for the remainder of the time up to the five-year limit of the plan. The Financial Ombudsman’s view is that the furniture should be fit for purpose for the duration of the insurance plan and therefore if multiple repairs are required they would be permitted until the indemnity value of the policy was reached.

A

Q

A distraught customer returned from holiday to discover that while she was away a party was held at her house and a fight broke out. The result is that her living room carpet was torn in several places and stained by blood. The carpet was expensive, which is why she bought a protection plan, but the company that made it is no longer in business. What can she expect?

Once again the customer would need to have a protection plan that provides cover for accidental damage as well as staining. If the coverage were correct then a claim could be made. In these types of cases Guardsman would look to establish if the party was held with the permission of the plan holder, as there could potentially be a right of recovery of costs from the individual or individuals involved. The manufacturer no longer being in business is not an issue: the protection plan is administered by the plan provider and not the manufacturer. If a replacement item is required an alternative carpet of a similar quality and value can be offered or, depending on the insurance underwriter, a cash settlement might also be possible.

Mind the gap Managing customers’ expectations is key In St Peter’s Basilica in Rome is a chair believed to date back to the sixth century, one of the oldest chairs in existence. It’s so well worn it’s only put on display once a century. When I was a child, we had furniture in the front room which was only ever used when we had guests, so it probably would have lasted just as long. But in today’s world, how long should a piece of furniture last? Some sofas are not just sat on, they’re lived in – our lifestyles have changed dramatically, but have customers’ expectations moved with the times? I visited a fitted bedroom installation where the customer had labelled every minute ‘fault’ with a Post-it note and his expectations were clearly considerable. Every time you sell, two sets of expectations meet on the shopfloor: the customer’s and yours. Identifying the differences and managing the customer’s expectations is crucial to a successful transaction. Failing to do so will doubtless mean a complaint. The customer’s expectations will be based on, among other things, their

previous experiences (and that of their friends and relatives), the price, and their perception of your brand. Yours may be based on your technical knowledge and on your experiences with that product or supplier. But there’s a third factor that must be taken into account: how will the furniture be used and cared for? It’s not unknown for a customer to assume upholstery needs no maintenance. So it’s important to ensure you give the right advice as well as the right product: how you sell is therefore as important as what you sell. All too often the customer’s expectations and perceptions only come out at the time of a complaint, so listen to your complaining customers carefully. Their complaints may be more about the gap between their expectations and yours than about faults with the product. If you learn from this you’ll be able to make sure similar complaints are avoided by more care at the selling stage. Guarantees can influence a customer. They show confidence in your product and help a decision to purchase. Also, they affect the customer’s expectations

Should this leather cushion have become baggy? The customer didn’t think so

18

Interiors Monthly July 2015

about the durability of what they’ve bought. They shouldn’t be worded in a way that would dissuade a customer from making a reasonable complaint: no reasonable consumer would expect any item of furniture to last only a year, so a one-year guarantee cannot stop the customer making a claim after two or more years, and could make them think twice about buying. A customer has the right to make a legal claim up to six years after purchase and even longer if a guarantee promises a longer life for the product. Plus, they have statutory rights that cannot be over-ridden by any guarantee. How long should a product last? That’s a question worth considering every time you’re with a customer. Ask the right questions to understand their expectations so you can ensure they’re realistic and make sure what you sell meets or exceeds them. That way you’ll all be happy, and for a long time. A big statement Kahrs’ latest collection has planks 3m long Kahrs has introduced the Real collection of wood floors. Defined by its imposing format, the oak planks span 2.4m – 3m in length and 25cm or 30cm width. The collection includes even and rustic timber grades and natural, misty white and light grey stained finishes. There are six designs with each offered in a choice of timber grades, giving a total of 12 flooring options. All designs have a lightly brushed surface and a tactile oiled pre-finish. An unfinished plank is also available by special order. A four-sided bevel edge accentuates the plank format.

All floors are made from sustainable European oak. To achieve optimum stability in a large format, the boards are constructed from three layers of hardwood and have a tongue and groove joint for a bonded installation. The floor’s surface layer, which measures 20mm, can be sanded like a solid, down to the joint. A range of accessories – including underlay, skirting boards and trims – are also offered, as well as installation and maintenance products. Visit: www.kahrs.com

Design flair Interfloor’s Meister offering now has more colours and accessories Interfloor recently updated its Meister engineered wood floors. Featuring 30 colours, with matching accessories, this premium range is for independent retailers and flooring contractors. ‘Meister’s reputation for innovative products is again evident with 3D finishes and the incredible new Lindura range which combines a wood layer with wood powder technology, and an HDF core, to give a harder wearing floor that is more resistant to indentation. With Meister’s outstanding 35-year residential warranty this range is on-trend for the consumer and comes with Interfloor’s three to five-day delivery service as standard,’ says Steve Woodhead, Interfloor marketing director. Interfloor also provides a marketing package including a modular POS system, accessory sample boards, a 60-page brochure, consumer sampling service and a consumer marketing programme through Facebook. The Meister laminate range includes 37 decors and an expanded range of colour matched accessories. All its laminates have an HDF core for greater durability and the collection features narrower, longer and tile formats as well and some planks with a non-repeat decor. Most of the company’s flooring products incorporate a patented Masterclic Plus click system that produces a more secure locking mechanism and reduces installation time. ‘The response to the Meister laminate range has been outstanding since its launch in 2014. Customers seem to love the brand. We believe our new range of Meister engineered wood will offer a unique solution that will be equally popular. ‘The unique Nadura flooring, with five colours and utilising wood powder technology, is incredibly hard-wearing and comes with an unprecedented lifetime warranty for residential use,’ adds Woodhead. Wild Mesquite (above) has been joined by Barn Oak (right) in Tradition Sculpture

Building on tradition Balterio has added more decors Balterio has updated its Tradition Sapphire collection with Malt Teak decor and the Tradition Sculpture range with Barn Oak and Wild Mesquite decors. The rustic character of hand-worked wooden floors is represented in the Tradition Sapphire laminate collection. A rough plank floor and randomly chiselled V-grooves bring nostalgia into the home, with the hand-scraped finish adding authentic character. Tradition Sculpture is designed to reflect pure craftsmanship with the natural surface of the oak laminate planks handcrafted down to the smallest detail. Its rustic and authentic character features a rough, hand-scraped look in combination with four-sided V-grooves. The 1,261mm x 190.5mm x 9mm planks in both collections also have the True To Nature embossed finish for the feel of a real wood floor and have a 25-year residential and 12-year contract warranty. Thanks to the Balterio’s True Matching technology, accessories such as skirting boards and profiles match the laminate flooring. Balterio accessories also have a lacquer overlay to make them more scratch-resistant. The ComfortSound Base and ComfortSound Pro underlays help avoid compression over time and loss of performance in sound reduction and levelling. Both have an integrated dampscreen for protection against rising damp while cutting the underlay around obstacles is made easier thanks to its imprint. Visit: www.balterio.com

BEDS AND BEDROOM The Teramo 1400 is Sealy’s second Which? Best Buy

Double accolade Sealy has received a second Which? Best Buy Award ‘To achieve one Which? Award is great, but to receive two in the space of a few months, is simply amazing,’ says Neil Robinson, Sealy marketing director, on hearing the news that the company’s Teramo 1400 mattress was the top scoring mattress in the latest Which? review. ‘Everyone here at Sealy is thrilled to bits and it’s a real tribute to the company’s commitment to being at the cutting edge of sleep technology. We always want to bring consumers the very best solution to getting a good night’s sleep and it’s just so great to see our hard work recognised.’ Sealy’s Napoli 1200 pocket spring mattress achieved Which? Best Buy status in 2015 for a third year running, but now, in the magazine’s latest review of mattresses it said the Sealy Teramo 1400 was ‘the best mattress we’ve tested in years’. ‘This is one of the most durable

mattresses we’ve tested – it’ll still be in great condition and able to support your body well even after years of use. Unlike some mattresses, it doesn’t sag or become less firm over time. The breathable material should also help you avoid getting sweaty during the night,’ said the review. Other comments included: ‘It’s very easy to turn over on the mattress and it’s stable enough that you won’t disturb your partner when you do,’ and ‘it’s a mattress that will serve you well for many years.’ ‘A Which? accreditation is trusted by the consumer as objective, trustworthy and hugely important when it comes to making major buying decisions and is recognised everywhere by the public, so this award is really important to us,’ says Robinson. SleepShaper Gold 2000 includes a Vystex sleeping surface

Cool sleeping An exclusive foam is at the heart of the SleepShaper Gold range The new SleepShaper Gold range of beds and mattresses from The Foam Company features Vystex foam, incorporating V-Max technology for improved airflow. ‘Manufactured in the UK exclusively for The Foam Company, this pioneering foam has gone through extensive thermal testing. The findings show that Vystex is able to dissipate heat 47% more quickly than standard memory foam,’ says Michael Nash, The Foam Company md. ‘Not only is this revolutionary foam cooler than standard memory foam, but at 70kg compared to most memory foams of 40kg-50kg, it is also of a far superior quality. We are passionate about ensuring that any marketing claims we make can be proven, which is why we commissioned a bespoke thermal test to support the findings that this

40

Interiors Monthly July 2015

revolutionary foam makes the mattresses considerably cooler than those featuring standard memory foam.’ This scientific test began with covering a variety of mattresses with a fitted sheet, replicating normal use. A heated blanket was then wrapped around a bolster which was placed on the mattress to imitate the human position. The bolster, including the mattress, was then covered in a Mylar insulating foil blanket. This set-up was left for 30 minutes and then removed. The initial temperature was then taken at certain points using thermocouples, then again every five minutes and thermal images taken. When the temperature reached 25 degrees, the test was complete. ‘The SleepShaper Gold range is for

those who desire comfort and quality, but also want a mattress incorporating the latest advances,’ he explains. ‘This range offers incredible support and is extremely comfortable, but now with Vystex, customers can have something significantly cooler than standard memory foam, and have the confidence that there is evidence to support this claim,’ adds Nash. There are five mattresses in the SleepShaper Gold range. Gold Firm is 20cm deep, featuring 7cm Vystex and 13cm high density foam core. Gold Embrace is 22cm deep, with a soft feel and the Gold 1000, 1500 and 2000 pocket sprung mattresses all have a Vystex sleeping surface. All come with divans and coordinating contemporary headboards. The Foam Company, tel: 01235 514 240

Head of the game Twils is using headboards to stand out from the competition Created to meet today’s needs of using the same space for various purposes during different times of day, Twils’ Frame bed system is based on separation of spaces and organisation of functions. The headboard becomes a small, fitted structure that separates the areas and also serves as a wardrobe or bookcase. Constructed with a lightweight lacquered metal framework, the front part facing the bed is a padded backrest, while the rear is fitted with a hanger rod and wooden shelf. A sofa version with the clothes rail back that converts into a bed, can also be used as a divider for the foyer, or as a bookcase for the living area. Open Air balances full and empty generated by the structure’s intersecting parts and the structural rigidity of the headboard, offset by the soft fabric upholstery using buttons to hold the fabric in place. Strong references to outdoor icons, weaves and natural decorations come together in Twils’ first wood headboard, Natural, with a double twist of ‘branches’ interwoven with the vertical post. The warmth of natural wood, the multi-level weave of the headboard and the semi-embracing shape make Natural a cocoon bed. Visit: www.twils.it

Triple score Karndean Designflooring’s LooseLay range has been expanded Karndean Designflooring has extended its LooseLay collection with Series Three of its LVT. Its six latest wood designs tap into the trend for fashionable rustics, deep greys and popular oak tones. The complete Karndean LooseLay collection now features 19 wood designs and eight intricate stone tiles. Inspired by nature, the collection features a range of tones from the striking, warm ginger of Burlington LLP110 to the light, blonde hues of Cambridge LLP113, all of which have a 15-year residential guarantee. ‘Homeowners are seeing the benefits of Karndean LooseLay in place of traditional carpet and laminate, and it’s continuing to grow from strength to strength in the marketplace,’ says Paul Barratt, Karndean Designflooring md. ‘The collection is not only design-led but it’s also compatible with underfloor heating and the individual planks allow easy access at all times. Our newest wood designs are a welcome addition and reflect the trends we’re seeing within interior design,’ he says. Karndean LooseLay’s friction grip backing and increased dimensional stability secures the floor firmly in place. It can be installed over most hard floors as long as they’re dry, smooth, sound and dust-free. The collection’s large scale 1,050mm x 250mm planks and 610mm x 500mm tiles combined with fast

Commercial customisation LVT popularity has grown in non-residential sectors

It is not just the residential market in which LVT is seeing growth: LVT is the fastest growing flooring category in the contract market, according to Tarkett. The company has expanded its contract offering to include Loose-lay LVT. ‘Our internal tests indicate our Loose-lay LVT outperforms the competition in terms of traction to the subfloor thanks to its patented anti-skid backing. Not only does this reduce labour and material costs, but since it can be installed without the need for glue, the LVT can be easily removed without damaging the subfloor or product, making future renovations easier and cheaper,’ says Steve Urwin, Tarkett marketing manager. Ideal for overnight installation, iD Inspiration Loose-lay LVT requires little if any subfloor preparation as it absorbs uneven patches. ‘The proposition of LVT by definition is customisation; however there remains significant market demand for the simplicity of stone and wood designs. iD Inspiration Loose-lay LVT is available in demure designs while also offering eye-catching textile and abstract aesthetics for those retailers and establishments looking to stand out,’ he explains. The latest addition to Tarkett’s collection of contract modular solutions, iD Inspiration Loose-lay LVT, joins iD Inspiration Click, iD TILT and iD Inspiration 55 in Tarkett’s collection of contract LVT flooring. All products in the iD collection feature the surface benefits of Topclean XP PUR reinforcement which means no wax and no polish for life, and easy low-cost maintenance. ‘The addition of Loose-lay LVT to Tarkett’s extended family of modular solutions provides the most complete product offer in its class, reflecting Tarkett’s design leadership in the field of commercial product development,’ adds Urwin. The popularity of grey is increasing on this side of the Channel The rise of grey is well documented in carpet, but the trend is also materialising itself in wood and tile floor finishes. Grey woods and stones have been big news in mainland Europe for a while and Leoline is seeing growing demand for the look in the UK too. Shaking off its cold and austere reputation for something far more soothing and welcoming, grey has turned from small risk into top seller. Showing in new and existing designs in the Tile Styles collection as well as woods such as Woodmark’s San Remo and Luxury Woods’ Camargue, grey is in the limelight in Leoline’s 2015 line-up. ‘As a Europe-wide brand we’ve seen grey rise to prominence in continental Europe and now the UK is catching up,’ says Victoria Hemelaer, Leoline product manager. ‘Whether it is on the back of the colour’s growth in carpet, or indicative of a broader trend, grey is beginning to replace honey oak or yellow limestone tones to give a warm and sophisticated look.’ Thanks to the design flexibility of cushion flooring Leoline can respond quickly to the latest interior styles. This means retailers can offer flooring for fashion savvy homeowners – a generation in tune with the practical advantages of cushion flooring, says Hemelaer. Visit: www.leoline.co.uk

Corndell now has seven finishes: White, Cotton, Buttermilk, Taupe, Haze, Ledum and Fawn

Creative alternatives Corndell is expanding its Annecy bedroom collection Although oak cabinet remains an omnipresent force in-store and online, retailers still want alternatives that offer consumers the chance to flex their creative skills when selecting for their homes. Since Corndell added four colours – Taupe, Haze, Ledum and Fawn – to its top-selling Annecy painted bedroom collection in January, it has seen sales go from strength to strength, proving that painted cabinet is a growing area of the market.

Annecy’s hand-painted finish helps emphasise the crisp detailing on each product, in a range that now includes an Imperial bed, triple wardrobe, cheval mirror and blanket box. To build on this success, Corndell is launching an oak top option for Annecy at the show. This is something that retailers have requested and adds a further 192 SKUs to the range. The oak tops with their pale, limed or rich, satin finish, add to the countryside chic appeal

of Annecy and creates the opportunity to mix and match colour and finish within the bedroom. The range also has three new handles: chrome cup, glass and wood. The updates to Annecy means it will have a choice of 17 products, seven colours, five handles and painted or wooden tops in two finishes, providing retailers with a comprehensive choice for the creative interiors shopper. Right: The company is focusing on the living, dining and bedroom sectors Left: The sleepers are cut into three finishes Rght: Simon Fox at the Harare factory which employs 20 staff

On the right track African railway and mine sleepers are being reclaimed to become furniture It seems that everywhere you turn, many more people are doing their bit for the environment. From something as simple as weekly recycling to the upcycling furniture trend, where people sand, varnish and paint their way to a totally new look. But, using reclaimed materials to design furniture allows something to be created that suits your own style, while also reducing your carbon footprint and breathing new life into natural resources. ‘At African Trackwoods, our business has been founded on the recycling of hardwood, a material that is at the heart of the reclaimed furniture boom,’ says Simon Fox, African Trackwoods owner. At the turn of the last century, thousands of hectares of Southern

60

Africa’s indigenous hardwoods were cut down for the Cape to Cairo railroad. Since the early 1900s these sleepers have been exposed to the elements so have weathered and aged naturally. ‘Using this stunning wood, our team of skilled carpenters are able to recycle and hand-craft the original hardwood sleepers into our range of distinctive furniture,’ he says. Once the sleepers are delivered to the Harare factory in Zimbabwe, they are graded according to their wood, character and quality. The wood is predominantly African Teak, Salinga or Panga Panga, all indigenous to Africa. The furniture is heat and water resistant, enabling the team to create pieces that are steeped in

history, yet ideal for modern living. The company buys sleepers from the mines and railways of Zambia and generally holds stock of about 1,000. ‘We take great pride in recycling this otherwise unwanted wood and breathing new life into it,’ explains Fox. He says the company is capable of creating designs for any room but it is focusing on the living, dining and bedroom sectors for the UK. Each sleeper is cut to reveal three different stages of weathering. The outside of the sleeper is used to give a rustic, heavy finish; the next layer is used to create a medium finish while the core of the sleeper is used for a smooth, fine finish. Increasing options Furnico is offering retailers greater choice Furnico is introducing leather choices to two of its most popular ranges. The Townley and Suffolk motion ranges, both part of the Synergy Collection, will be launched with a choice of four leather colourways. Darren Hargreaves, Furnico Independent Sofas md, says the introduction of leather will give high street retailers more choice. ‘Furnico has always been known as a specialist in fabric upholstery, but we believe this is yet another way that we can help our customers improve their profit margin. ‘Increased customer choice has to be a good thing and we believe our leather options will open up our products to a broader section of consumers as well.’ Furnico’s Synergy collection has become popular as it offers consumers more than 200 colourways to create a sofa that fits perfectly with their home decor. The manufacturer will also be unveiling a fabric corner group at the event alongside a new chair gallery. All Furnico products come with a 10year limited warranty as standard. ‘Consumers are much more savvy than they used to be with lots of use and interest in Pinterest,’ he says. Penney predicts that forthcoming furniture trends will include an upsurge in metallic finishes, pewter, and warm tones of gold, with art-deco influences, accent tables, console and coffee tables, with marble also finding new followers. The company is keeping details of

what it will be showing at the exhibition close to its chest but Penney is happy to highlight plans for its Frank Hudson and Hudson Living furniture brands. ‘Frank Hudson will see a Lloyd Loom style bed this year while Hudson Living will enter new sectors next year as conservatory and outdoor furniture is included for the first time.’ Visit: www.gallerydirect.co.uk

SERVICE

One-stop-shop for logistics

Andrew Porter is investing in more staff and its fleet

76

Interiors Monthly July 2015

Furniture logistics specialist Andrew Porter is experiencing record-breaking growth in its 20th anniversary year. The firm’s direct home delivery service in particular is booming, with existing customers increasing business, and high profile firms signing up, with contracts due to begin over the summer. The Chorley, Lancashirebased company is

breaking records week on week with its home deliveries on behalf of an increasing number of retailers, manufacturers and importers, including many household names. To keep on top of demand, Andrew Porter has added to its head office and administration staff, as well as recruiting new crews and drivers. A dedicated call centre team now handles incoming enquiries, passing queries to the relevant departments, and a new transport manager will free up the general manager’s time. This restructuring allows staff to focus on

SERVICE more specialist roles, improving efficiency. The company has also invested in more home and retail delivery vehicles, increasing its fleet to 60 vehicles and 50 trailers. Tim Aspey, Andrew Porter md, says the growth in all aspects of the company’s logistics division shows that customer confidence is at a new high. ‘All of our new customers have come via recommendations, or because they were wanting a more reliable or higher quality level of service than they had been receiving elsewhere.’ Its DHD service puts quality first and is designed for customers who value the care of their products and customers’ experience over cost-cutting. He says the company’s service reduces damage and gives end users a quality experience when receiving a home delivery. ‘We’re delighted to report that our numbers of home deliveries are now at record levels and we are investing to ensure our customers receive the same, or improved levels of service, as demand increases,’ he says. One of the most popular options is the full service logistics provision, combining warehousing, home delivery and retail deliveries, as it means customers do not need to worry about planning or overseeing logistics requirements, as it is all in the hands of specialists. Specialist in memory foam mattresses, Dormeo, has relied on Andrew Porter as its logistics partner for the past two years, with the company providing a full complement of services. Initially it was appointed to handle warehousing and deliveries for Dormeo’s Octaspring mattress range, 18 months after it was launched in the UK. With

sales predicted to increase rapidly, Dormeo needed to outsource warehousing and logistics to an expert provider, which had the size and capacity to cope with growth demands. A dedicated warehousing and assembly area in Andrew Porter’s purpose-built warehouse, means the brand has its own 20,000sqft storage facility within the premises. Products are delivered to the warehouse from Dormeo’s factories throughout Europe and are stored before being consolidated into orders. The company also provides Dormeo’s DHD and retail delivery to independent and multiple retailers across the UK and Republic of Ireland, amounting to

Above: DHD deliveries are offered Below and left: Andrew Porter provides a full service for Dormeo

hundreds of deliveries every week. ‘The volume of product that Andrew Porter has handled for us over the years has increased significantly as our Octaspring range has taken hold in the UK market and its unique benefits have proved popular with customers,’ says Darren Huggins, Dormeo chief financial officer. ‘We’ve been consistently impressed by how our stock management and deliveries have been handled, which is especially important when dealing with our home delivery customers. ‘Andrew Porter’s attention to detail, organisational forward planning and capacity means it is able to help us grow as our customer base does. Regular key performance indicator reports allow us to easily monitor progress,’ he adds. ‘The Octaspring range offers very high end products which, as such, require sensitive handling and storage in order to ensure they reach customers in pristine condition,’ says Aspey. ‘We continually invest in our premises, equipment and staff training so that our customers can be confident that their products are in the safest of hands. ‘Over the years we have come to realise that it’s long-term customer partnerships which deliver the greatest results, as both companies can work together to find an optimum logistics solution that meets everyone’s needs. This takes work and effort on both parts. Dormeo is one of our many customers which find that our one-stop-shop furniture logistics provision, combining warehousing, DHD and retail delivery, can improve the bottom line as well as providing a high quality turnkey service,’ Aspey adds. LIGHTING

Out of the dark

Fedora combines minimalism and history Among the highlights of Axo Light’s 2015 launches is Fedora, in which designer Dima Loginoff has combined minimalism and historical references in the form of the Russian Matryoshka doll. ‘It has the most minimal shape compared with other Russian icons. Besides, despite what many people think about Matryoshka – it’s not too old. In fact it is as old as cinematograph, and the idea of many layers when you may find one doll inside another came from Japan. Many Russians think that Matryoshka is 500 or 1,000 years old. ‘I have several dolls at home. One of them is simple and painted just in one bold colour – gold. Despite people calling me “the least Russian designer in Russia”, I love this shape and it seems it’s in my DNA. The name Fedora is an old and forgotten Russian name, its short name is Dora: the name of my greatgrandmother,’ he says. Loginoff says the history of shapes often influences artists and designers. ‘I am a big fan of minimalism, but at the same time I always have this contrast in my mind about historical influence, meaning not only Russian historical styles. I am playing a wonderful game in

78

Interiors Monthly July 2015

Fedora comes in rose gold (top) and bronze

design where I try to combine modern and traditional. ‘It is not strange that in this project I connected modern and old. It usually depends on the shape. I have designed many ultra-modern things, but sometimes I just feel that classical shapes will be great to redesign and turn the product into modern.’

When asked about Russian taste he says he doesn’t know what’s going on in that field. ‘Maybe that’s why I haven’t designed for any Russian company yet. Of course, there are differences with the rest of the world. New money, new power, new ways of expression. Rich people often look strange, but what I noticed – they learned fast and they are changing. You can easily find absolutely modern, simple and luxurious residences as well as modern townhouses in suburbs for the middle class. And it is not too “traditional”. ‘As for me, I start my day with a cup of espresso and design blogs. I check a lot of design content, but not because I have to. That’s my passion, that’s part of my life. Local market doesn’t influence me at all, the world of design does. ‘Designing lamps is one of the aspects I love more about my work. This idea includes so many aspects: shape and aesthetics, the light, its rays, the shadows. And people always forget about the darkness. In one turn you light up the darkness. Which other piece of design can do that?’ Visit: www.axolight.it

Woodman Chairs continues to mix manufacturing and wholesale

Tom Woodman, Woodman Chairs director, is proud to be associated with a leading wholesaler of solid oak and beech dining chairs and tables to both the retail and contract markets. ‘We make most of the chairs, to our own designs and in a wide choice of styles, finishes and seat options,’ he says. It also makes chairs, chair frames and components for other manufacturers and wholesalers. ‘We can make to companies’ specifications in sensibly low numbers, just in time and at intelligent prices, thus saving them money and cashflow tied up in unwanted stock,’ says Woodman. And the company continues to widen its product offer, with it reintroducing children’s chairs from the late summer. ‘Customers see that they do not need to tie up large amounts of cash months ahead in container quantities and then have to store them, often expensively, because they can buy what they want, what’s selling, when they want it, from us,’ says Woodman. OPINION

Rupert Anton

Healthy offensive Should the carpet industry tackle the asthma issue? The tsunami that was ‘carpet is bad for you, rip it up and replace it with smooth floors’ has, fortunately, passed. But that is not to say that the twin subjects of allergens and air pollution are not regularly revisited by the media. In January this year, the Daily Mail ran an article entitled ‘Could the air in your home be killing you?’ The text was factually accurate and drew attention to the potential effects on health from airborne toxic chemical pollutants that are not dispersed because of inadequate ventilation in UK homes. It did not mention carpet per se, but did carry a representation of a dust mite with the warning that ‘carpets harbour dust mites’. There is an argument that the damage has been done and that the claims, while admittedly in the past, have impacted upon consumers and is firmly embedded in the minds of some. While in no way as front of mind as before, there is still a misconception among a portion of the carpet buying public, that for those with asthma, carpet is not the right floorcovering. There is an undercurrent that

carpet is bad for you if you suffer from asthma. But, the three dimensional construction of a carpet is such that many airborne pollutants, which need to be breathed in to cause harm, become collected in the pile of a carpet, until removed by routine vacuum cleaning, so preventing their recirculation in indoor air. Furthermore, a dust mite is hardly a toxic chemical and it is beds, not carpets, that

‘There is an undercurrent that carpet is bad for you if you suffer from asthma’ tend to provide the optimum conditions for dust mites to thrive. Is this a battleground that the industry should consider entering – particularly as carpet sales are definitely on the up (that is not to say that smooth sales are not)? If any organisation could or should take it up, it would be the Carpet Foundation. Interestingly, talking to chief executive Andrew Stanbridge, he did not rule it out. ‘We as an organisation, and as an industry, have long been guarded and defensive about the health benefits of carpet. However, retailers are increasingly telling us that the concern over carpet for asthma sufferers still bubbles away beneath the surface. And, what is more, it is an entrenched view and difficult to change opinions. It is certainly an area we are looking at,’ he says. So should the carpet industry go on the offensive about health?
