EDITOR’S COMMENT

Consolidation Consolidation in the flooring market looks set to pick up As if Mohawk and Victoria haven’t been doing their best in consolidating ownership in the flooring market, Balta Group seems set to get in on the act. Owner Lone Star says it will float the group on the Brussels stock exchange and raise €137.6m to reduce the €385m debt. It would then be able to start adding to the group. ‘The company is well-positioned to drive the market consolidation by leveraging its scale and track record of operational excellence. The fragmented nature of the market, with numerous high-quality smallscale companies, coupled with Balta’s reputation in the market, creates a solid M&A pipeline,’ says the flotation announcement. The announcement press conference then revealed that talks are ongoing with a handful of potential targets while it has a list of up to 15, including the UK. The documentation makes it clear that there are many smaller companies in the

market that it could bolt-on. This will have already set the rumour mill going, so let me add to it, UK-wise. What if Balta had larger targets in mind? Victoria’s stock market value was just under £500m at the time of writing. At that price Balta reducing its debt by the planned amount doesn’t seem to be enough to fund any deal. For its part Victoria has signalled it wants to grow its hard flooring market share with the appointment of former Beaulieu International Group executive Jan Debrouwere. On the other hand, City investors haven’t looked too kindly upon Carpetright over the past year, with its valuation falling to £149m. Could Balta take vertical integration to the next level? Just a thought. On the topic of flotations, online mattress retailer Eve got its £35m flotation away despite needing a £5m cash injection in the spring and losing £11.34m to generate £11.97m of sales. Yes there were expansion costs, but it now needs to drive down the cost of capturing each order from £250 to £100 and it faces a 15% return rate on its mattressess.

Eve needed £5m shortterm boost pre flotation Online mattress retailer Eve required £5m further investment as it lost almost as much as it sold last year. The company required one of its early investors to add a further £5m in March to support the loss-making business. Its pre-stock market flotation documents show that Eve needed city fund manager Neil Woodford to ‘fund the company’s short-term cash requirements and was made to protect the investor’s original investment while the business sought a longer-term funding solution’. Eve has raised £35m from the listing on AIM. The company generated sales of £11.97m in 2016 from 32,007 orders but lost £11.34m. Sales in the UK were £7.73m, continental Europe £3.15m and the rest of the world £1m. Average order value was £423 in the second half of 2016. The company offers a 100-day return policy on mattresses (those sold through Amazon are limited to 30 days) and 15% of consumers returned the mattress. The cost of capturing each order increased from £176 to £245, driven by the introduction of major marketing campaigns, including TV. It says the cost in the UK has fallen from £350 in September 2016 to £250 in March 2017: it has targeted a figure of £100 in the UK ‘in the medium term’. Eve’s mattresses are manufactured in the UK primarily for delivery to the UK and France by Duflex Foam, part of Belfield Furnishings. The mattress is manufactured in Germany mainly for delivery to Germany, Spain, Poland, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands and all other EU markets by Frankenstolz, and in the US for delivery to the US by FXI.

The new Skandium stores are in Thurloe Place
Skandium set to divide and grow Skandium is to close its Brompton Road, London, store after a decade and replace it with two branches a five minute walk away. Opening in July, a two-storey building at 35-36 Thurloe Place will become Skandium’s new homewares store, stocking its collection of Scandinavian soft furnishings, accessories and lighting. Directly opposite, opening in September, a four-storey townhouse at 31 Thurloe Place will become the new furniture outlet. The space will allow the retailer to create roomsets. The two locations will have 5,500sqft of retail space. ‘It will be a totally new store concept for us, consisting of two separate buildings facing each other across the street. One, a townhouse, providing the best possible way to show how our clients could live and furnish their homes, and opposite, a standalone, quintessentially English building dating from the 1860s, which will showcase one of London’s largest collections of Scandinavian lighting, plus a floor full of accessories and gift ideas expertly curated for the design conscious and the curious. In the new store, expect to find an engaging mix of mid-century masterpieces, future classics, and there will always be room for a Moomin mug,’ says Jan Vejsholt, Skandium md. Moving closer to South Kensington tube station, the stores maintain proximity to the Victoria & Albert Museum, Natural History Museum and South Kensington. Skandium hopes to attract the local community and capitalise on the weekend shopper, as well as safeguarding the customer base of the Brompton Road store. Its Marylebone branch and Republic of Fritz Hansen store in Fitzrovia are unaffected.

Balta poised for Brussels stock market flotation Flooring group Balta is to float on the Brussels stock market, almost two years after being bought by Lone Star. The company will raise €137.6m to reduce its €385m debts. New shares will be issued alongside Lone Star selling some. No information has been provided on the number of shares, new and Lone Star’s, to be issued. The group had pro-forma sales of €668m and adjusted EBITDA of €97m last year. It says it will return 30%-40% of profits to shareholders as dividends. The UK and Republic of Ireland made up 22% of sales last year, the rest of Europe 42%, North America 28% and the rest of the world 8%. Residential carpet sales made up 35% of sales, rugs 32%, commercial 29% and non-wovens 4%. Rugs generated 39% of profits, residential 29%, commercial 29% and non-wovens 3%. The company has made plain its plans to grow by acquisition, as demonstrated by the purchase of Bentley Mills in March. ‘In addition to organic initiatives, the company is wellpositioned to drive the market consolidation by leveraging its scale and track record of operational excellence. The
fragmented nature of the market, with numerous highquality small-scale companies, coupled with Balta’s reputation in the market creates a solid M&A pipeline. With well-defined target selection criteria, a disciplined approach to valuation and integration capabilities, Balta’s management has sufficient resources, expertise and focus to explore further inorganic growth opportunities,’ it says. ‘Balta’s IPO is an exciting milestone in the 53-year history of the group. Our ambition is to continue our transformation into a leading global player in decorative rugs and soft flooring,’ says Tom Debusschere, Balta ceo. ‘We stay the course in commercial carpets in the USA. Bentley continues to execute its growth strategy with its successful team and independent brand identity. Our listing on Euronext Brussels is a major step in the realisation of our objectives as it will allow us to continue the virtuous cycle of ever faster design and innovation and will strengthen our position to further support the international growth of the company. ‘We strongly believe that this will benefit our customers, employees and shareholders,’ he adds.

Hard target for Victoria
Harveys goes mega Harveys has continued to roll out its large format Megastores. The store format, designed by JE+1, has now been implemented in branches in Bolton (pictured), Aintree and Manchester. This follows trials at Lakeside and Brent Cross. The design nearly doubles the typical size of stores, allowing Harveys to display its full range across four collections. Different customer lifestyle types are represented in the Megastores in both look and in-store communications. Four capsule displays are merchandised around a large digital display. Megastores feature a hero display for the customisable Sofas By You collection, where shoppers can select the shape and fabric of their sofa. A central fabric table creates a hub for the process and communicates the level of personalisation available. JE+1 has also created store designs for Bensons, DFS, Dwell, Sofa Workshop and Topps Tiles.

Victoria has made clear its intention to target the hard flooring market with the appointment of Jan Debrouwere as director of business development – hard flooring. Management consultant Debrouwere ran Beaulieu International Group’s hard flooring division for four years and held senior positions at IVC, Domo and Tarket in 28 years in the industry. He reports to Philippe Hamers, Victoria ceo. ‘Jan’s appointment is an important step as the group seeks to secure customers, suppliers and acquisitions to gain market share in the growing hard flooring market,’ says Geoff Wilding, Victoria executive chairman.
Lukehurst makeover Kent furniture and flooring retailer Lukehurst has invested £100,000 in refurbishing its flagship Rainham store. The facelift follows the opening of its £2m showroom in Sittingbourne in October 2015. ‘The changes at Sittingbourne have proved so popular with our customers that we wanted to create something similar for our flagship showroom in Rainham. We now have two modern stores and a well-developed website that keeps us on top of our game. It means we can compete with bigger players and ensure a good future for our family business,’ says Kathryn Lukehurst, joint md.

Northern Big Shots raises more than £17,000
people
This year’s Northern Big Shots charity clay pigeon shooting event has topped the amount of money raised in 2016. More than £17,000 was raised for The Furniture Makers at the event at the Coniston Hotel and country estate near Skipton, with 15 teams taking part. ‘It really was an amazing day which saw industry leaders from around the country come together for a great day of shooting and networking. We had everyone from experienced shooters to people who had never picked up a gun in their life before; others who had come all the way from Belgium to take part plus someone else who had come from Florida in the USA,’ says organiser Victor Giannandrea. ‘Our raffles alone raised more than £2,000 and thanks to a number of very generous sponsors we were able to boost the amount raised to even more than last year, ensuring the day was both enjoyable and very worthwhile. ‘I was also thrilled that my original shooting partner, Ian Peel, an Olympic silver medallist at clay shooting, was able to join us for the day as my personal guest to present the prizes,’ he adds. Winners on the day were: Top Team: Howdens Joinery; Top Gun (Male): Steve Kelly (Mattress Online with the Breasley team); Top Gun (Female): Sarah Harris (Steinhoff); Flurry:

Hillarys sold for £300m
Call for bed entries
Luxaflex parent Hunter Douglas is to buy blinds and flooring retailer Hillarys from its venture capital parent Ares Capital Corporation for £300m. In 2016 Hillarys had sales of £185m and employed 1,300 people. Hunter Douglas will retain its management. It said the deal would ‘add a strong brand and value offer for a wide customer base to Hunter Douglas in the UK’. Hunter Douglas owns 130 companies in more than 100 countries and has sales of £2.18bn.
Entries are now open for the Bed Industry Awards: Bed Retailer of the Year (turnover over £5m); Bed Retailer of the Year (turnover under £5m); Bed Manufacturer of the Year (turnover over £10m); Bed Manufacturer of the Year (turnover under £10m); Component Supplier of the Year; and Judges’ Choice Award. ‘The awards are a celebration of what’s good about the industry and provide a great opportunity for businesses of all shapes and sizes – from big brands to small niche players – to highlight their fantastic achievements,’ says Jessica Alexander, executive director of the NBF. ‘Over the years, we’ve lost some categories, added new ones and tweaked them to reflect the changing nature of the industry. What the judges are looking for is who has excelled themselves in the past year [mid 2016-mid 2017] and how they’ve done it – they want cold, hard facts that demonstrate and back up the entry. Good quality, clear entries are key.’ This year’s independent judging panel is Peter Mallinson, AIS merchandise director – home; Roy Beagent, Minerva group business manager; Bernard Eaton, Greenwood Retail md; Richard de Melim, Furnishing Report editor and Alexander. The awards will be announced at the Bed Industry Awards gala dinner on 19 September at Telford International Centre.

Measure of excellence British Standards are being updated I’m in a warehouse in Loughborough where 12 of the UK’s best carpet fitters are battling to become Carpet Fitter of the Year 2017. It’s the semi-final and only six of them will make it to the final at The Flooring Show in September. There’s plenty of action – gripper being cut and nailed into place, underlay being stapled and taped, and carpet getting seamed and stretched to create the most perfect finish – and plenty of debate between my fellow judges about the progress being made. Is that the right way to cut a seam? How secure is the carpet in the doorbar? Who has carried out the right checks and who let us know about the damage already showing on the skirting boards? There’s so much to think about. But what adds to the excitement is seeing how the various contestants achieve the same result by different techniques and using different tools, often in ways we haven’t seen before and which we ourselves can learn from. To get to this stage the fitters have already demonstrated their knowledge of BS5325: 2001 – Installation of Textile

Floorcoverings – Code of Practice. But since the standard was published there have been some big developments, not only in our trade but also in the building trade, and the standard is being updated to reflect this. After all, how often these days do you get called on to shift a stair carpet to even out the wear (and could you do it, anyway, with the damage so often caused by bolstering the carpet into the gripper?). The new standard will be finalised and published later in the year. There are many British Standards covering different aspects of our trade, from kitchens to flooring, from beds to cabinets. They’re written by experts from within the industry and reviewed regularly to ensure they continue to meet the needs of the trade and the consumer. Knowing the British Standards and complying with them is good practice. How we achieve the standard is up to us, they don’t prescribe how you should do the job. In April this year a new edition of
BS8203 Installation of Resilient Floor Coverings – Code of Practice was published covering vinyl, linoleum, cork and rubber flooring. You can buy copies through most trade associations or directly from BSI online. You may think the price is expensive, but the assurance that you’re achieving the right results each time makes them worth every penny. The fact that they can also be used to help customers understand why you won’t compromise on a job makes them even more worthwhile. I spend a lot of my time looking at and helping to resolve complaints and the British Standards are a key reference when checking whether furniture or flooring is satisfactory or not. That’s why it’s such a pleasure to spend time with professionals who are seeking to be the best, and there’s always something to learn. I can’t wait for the finals of the competition in Harrogate. Advance sighting Sealy previewed forthcoming introductions at its recent show Sealy offered retailers a preview of its upcoming plans at its annual trade show at the Brooklands Museum in Surrey last month. Attended by retailers from the UK and Republic of Ireland, excitement surrounding new releases at the show was high. ‘The event provided the ideal opportunity for us to showcase our latest releases and give retailers an exclusive look at new product developments in advance of The Bed Show in September,’ says Neil Robinson, Sealy sales and marketing director. ‘As part of our continuous journey to deliver the most restful night’s sleep to consumers, we were able to showcase a huge selection of beds, including a
number of mattresses from the contract beds range. Prestigious companies such as Center Parcs, Legoland and Alton Towers are among the many establishments that trust in the brand to deliver a restorative night’s sleep to their customers. ‘We understand that a bad night’s sleep can lower a customer’s overall level of sleep satisfaction, so we have developed strong market insights and an unrivalled understanding of the crucial requirements and demands of the hospitality and tourism industry,’ he says. At the show, the updated Posturepedic range was previewed, with a new look alongside its latest technology. Also unveiled was the Naturals range, which

Bedazzling There are some designs that cannot be ignored If you imagine you are a 19th century monarch, Russian oligarch or perhaps are channelling your inner Liberace, Visionnaire could be the bed manufacturer for you (it is appropriately owned by Baron Albert Frère, the richest man in Belgium worth £3.9bn). ‘Visionnaire’s home philosophy speaks to a new way to regard furnishing – not strictly linked to the product, but linked to a way of living and linked to how the furniture will be used within its owner’s lifestyle. This vision has been the driving force in increased global demand for Visionnaire and the company’s worldwide expansion,’ says Eleonore Cavalli, Visionnaire creative director. ‘Uniqueness, modern style and a vocation for Made in Italy are the founding values of the Visionnaire brand,’ adds Cavalli, grand-daughter of co-founder Vittorio Cavalli, who with his brother Pompeo set up the company in 1959 making car seats for Lancia. Master class... … for walk-in wardrobe systems Following the success of Gliss Master, Vincent Van Duysen, Molteni&C’s creative director, has designed Master Dressing, a walk-in wardrobe system that completes the company’s wide range of bedroom offerings. Master Dressing complements the Gliss Master wardrobes thanks to its coordinated internal fittings and finishes. A distinctive structural feature is a new rack system to which wooden, lacquered, Fine Grain or glass back panels can be hooked. The system is fitted with specially designed support rods for the 30mm thick Ecopelle and illuminated glass shelves, or 40mm thick wooden shelves. There are also new sets of drawers, tie and rack accessories and vanity compartment, complete with large illuminated LED mirror. Fine Grain is a new and exclusive lacquer finish on a printed surface that can also be used for drawer backs and fronts. Starting from a gold base, five coats of varnish are applied. Gliss Master has been extended with more finishes for the frame (Raffia), the back panels (Fine Grain or Raffia) and the doors (Graffiato bronze or silica). This year has seen the introduction of an all-glass back panel that is inserted into a metal frame where a patented hinge enables it to open 180degrees. Thanks to glass doors and transparent glass side panels, fully glazed wardrobes can be achieved. Niche handles have been introduced alongside wider drawers. Upward swing imm Cologne attracted more than 150,000 visitors A record number of visitors was achieved by imm Cologne and sister show LivingKitchen as it reinforced its position kickstarting the year’s furniture events. ‘We met our target and have broken the 150,000 visitor mark,’ says Gerald Böse, Koelnmesse ceo. The show saw Koelnmesse’s efforts to internationalise the exhibition continue, with almost half of visitors coming from outside Germany. ‘That shows we are right on track with our drive to internationalise the event,’ he says. Of the 104,000 trade visitors, around 56,000 came from Germany and approximately 48,000 from outside, an increase of 4%. Within Europe, UK visitors rose by 13%, Italy by 19%, Spain by 25% and Russia by 26%. Visitor numbers from the Netherlands and Poland also increased. Numbers from further afield were also up: Chinese and Indian visitors by 5% and South Korean visitors by 12%. Figures from the Middle East were up 19%, with particularly strong growth from the United Arab Emirates. Katharina Hamma, Koelnmesse coo, emphasised the quality of the trade visitors. ‘No other event brings supply and demand together as effectively in this quality as imm Cologne and

LivingKitchen with visitors including large numbers of the global top 30 retail chains as well as the major industry players in online retail. With these results, the trade fair duo has confirmed its importance for the interior design industry’s global commercial operations on a national and an international level.’ In parallel with imm Cologne, international event LivingKitchen took place. For seven days 200 exhibitors from 21 countries showed how much innovation the industry has to offer and how high its standards of design and quality are. ‘This year’s LivingKitchen not only
followed on seamlessly from its success in 2015, but significantly improved on the key figures in many areas. For us, LivingKitchen 2017 was a complete success. The world’s best-performing kitchen industry needs a leading international trade fair in Germany. Our industry presented an outstanding showcase, and we are convinced that the show will significantly boost demand for kitchens, nationally and internationally,’ says Kirk Mangels, Modern Kitchen Working Group chief executive. Important date The Bed Show will take place for the eighth time The UK’s largest bed event, The Bed Show, returns for the eighth consecutive year at the Telford International Centre from 19-20 September. Hosting another strong line up of British bed manufacturers and suppliers, The Bed Show is the place to be for retailers, buyers and commercial specifiers looking for the latest products and developments in the industry. Confirmed to return are big brand names such as Airsprung Group, Breasley, Harrisons, Highgrove, Hypnos, Furmanac, Silentnight Group, Sleepeezee and Steinhoff Group, as well as smaller players including Shire Beds, Burgess Beds, Vogue, and a host of component suppliers. New to this year’s show is NBF supplier member, Edward Clay & Son and bed manufacturer member Dreamland Beds. Whether you are looking to source products or to gain inspiration the show, run by the National Bed Federation, is the place to be. Once again, only members of the NBF can exhibit. Since the introduction of the independently audited Code of Practice, buyers can buy with confidence knowing all the exhibitors are meeting their legal obligations. Last year’s event had its biggest turnout of visitors, up by nearly 10% on previous years. ‘The show is at the right time of year, in the right venue, for exhibitors to meet

The Bed show Telford 19-20 September
EXHIBITION GUIDE
Spring to the top There are many benefits from winning a Bed Industry Award If you aspire to be best in class then winning an esteemed industry award is a good way to do it. But according to the National Bed Federation, the trade organisation behind the Bed Industry Awards, when it comes to shouting about themselves bed companies struggle. ‘One question we hear time and time again is “Is entering awards worth the effort?” Of course it is. Yes, it can take time and resources, but entering, and subsequently winning an award is a fantastic way to raise your profile and a great opportunity to showcase your achievements, your people and your business. If you demonstrate belief in yourself, it’s much easier to get others to buy into your values,’ says Jessica Alexander, NBF executive director. ‘So it’s time to let go of the excuses – is it worth the effort; we never win; I’ve nothing to shout about; it always goes to the big boys etc – and listen to the reasons why entering awards is beneficial.’ Improve employee morale: Entering an award can really help focus a team, but if you are fortunate enough to win then the business will benefit from improved employee morale, an increased sense of pride, a motivation to work harder and a greater confidence in the business. It can also be a great way to attract new talent. Raise awareness of your company: Winning an award is a powerful way of differentiating you from competitors and

can open doors to getting new business. Plus it also gives you the perfect opportunity to tell your customers and your industry about the great things you are doing. One previous winner said ‘winning the award really put them on the map’. Endorsement: By winning or being shortlisted for an award, your hard work is recognised as making a considerable contribution to your industry – almost like a seal of approval, and we all know how much customers like reassurance. Benchmarking: Entering an award makes you assess your business and forces you to look at it from a different perspective. Also, comparing yourself to competitors makes for a great benchmarking exercise. PR and marketing opportunities: If you win an award, or are even shortlisted, nominated or commended, then don’t
be afraid to promote it to the maximum. It gives you the potential to attract exposure to your company. Entering their seventh year, the Bed Industry Awards have become a pinnacle of excellence in the trade and the NBF is calling for businesses of all shapes and sizes to enter. The awards recognise and celebrate the most successful bed retailers, manufacturers and suppliers and are judged by an independent panel. Reaping benefits of quality Alpha Designs is enjoying a sales uplift Alpha Designs Upholstery continues to grow at a rapid rate, seven years after owner Constantino Xydhias decided he needed to have his own production facility to ensure control of supply and quality. For many years he had been dealing with the problems of importing and relying on external suppliers. ‘Turnover doubled last year and the aim is to continue to do so while still striving to improve on an already very high level of service,’ says Xydhias. ‘We are continually investing in new staff, development of both new products and techniques and machinery as my belief is that to be at the forefront of the industry we have to utilise all resources available to the greatest extent. Thinking out of the box is always encouraged so that we don’t necessarily do things the same way as others but do them the best way for us and our customers.’ The family-run West Midlands business continues to be based on the original key goals: offering retail partners protection and flexibility by being a UK manufacturer; having interchangeable fabrics on unbranded products; and no online sales presence. This, married with the belief that all products are to be made to a consistently high standard that Xydhias would be proud to have in his home, are standing the business in good stead, along with an emphasis on

providing a personal service with a can do attitude. The company will show its latest designs at Midpoint in Solihull this month and at the Manchester Furniture Show. In advance of the events the company’s show vans have been

visiting retailers across the country. ‘Retailers have enjoyed being able to see the products up close and that they are made in the UK and we’re hoping for the same outcome at the shows,’ says Xydhias. Alpha Designs, tel: 01902 492 937

EXHIBITION GUIDE
Besp-Oak Open House Coventry 19-25 June
Above: Aluminium and rattan corner set Right: The website has been updated Far right: The showroom covers six floors
Besp-Oak Furniture has invested significantly in making the supply of container stock as quick as possible by storing stock at its overseas factory, resulting in lead times of six to eight weeks on direct container orders. Using intelligent data analysis, more than 750 lines have been selected, manufactured and stored ahead of the new fast track ordering system that will be introduced in July. Retailers can order any number of lines. The stock holding takes into account the major increase in demand for painted furniture as well as oak. Over the past two to three years the company has noticed a change in trend with more customers ordering items from the Vancouver Expressions and Chalked Oak collections, which allows customers to choose from numerous popular painted colours with golden oak or chalked oak tops. In light of the painted trend, the company introduced the Rosa collection which features a new cornice design, at the January Furniture Show and Spring Fair. These ranges will be on display,
alongside thousands of gift, home and accessory products including hundreds of new lines exclusive to Besp-Oak, at the company’s open house event at its Coventry showroom from 19-25 June. The 32,000sqft showroom, which covers six floors, is only 15 minutes away from the NEC and Birmingham International Airport, and a 10 minute walk from Coventry railway station. The event coincides with the Horticultural Trades Association National Plants Show at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry from 20-21 June, and there will be a free bus shuttle dropping visitors nearby the showroom. Show visitors will be the first to see the launch of many collections including iron kadai fire bowls, steam punk lighting and vintage shop fittings. In addition to the new collections, hundreds of additional lines have also been added to existing ranges including table lamps, retro models and glass art wall panels. To support the new more efficient stock supply, Besp-Oak’s IT system has been upgraded making the company’s new website easier to use. Customers can place container and wholesale orders
at any time and check stock levels. To view prices a quick trade application form must be completed. The full BespOak catalogue can be seen online. Lifestyle images and product shots have been a key focus for the company over the past year, which is evident when browsing through thousands of inspirational products which are displayed in the showroom and held in stock, says Hanna Albrighton, Besp-Oak marketing manager. ‘We boast one of the largest wholesale storage and distribution depots which supports efficient direct deliveries and collections of all products including oak furniture, painted furniture, outdoor, lighting, signs and clocks, vintage crates, giftware and kitchenware. On-site facilities include free parking, wi-fi and catering with refreshments served throughout the day – the team endeavour to be on hand to offer assistance and guidance when required.’ The company will also make its debut at Harrogate Home & Gift in July and is exhibiting at the Autumn Fair and GLEE in September. Art on the carpet Ulster looked to natural landscapes
Inspired by natural landscapes and the abstract masterpieces of JMW Turner, Ulster’s latest axminster, Watercolours, mimics washes of watercolour pigment softly blending into the canvas. Two designs – Amulet and Mineral – are available in five colourways that echo the natural elements. Deliberate yet whimsical brushstrokes evoke feelings of sky and water as they run and blend. These textures are layered over classic designs to give an antiqued effect of a textile treasured over time so only fragments of the pattern remain. ‘The range is perfect for areas where the pattern does not need to be dominant, instead reflecting the colours and fabrics in the room. The subtle blend of colours creates a calming, earthy
mood,’ says Jeremy Wilson, Ulster sales director. Made from 80% wool and 20% nylon, the range is for extra heavy wear usage and is available in five colour matching multi-widths, making it suitable for both small and large family spaces. The company has also added to Auckland and Queenstown in the Open Spaces collection. Auckland, a contemporary plain rib, will be extended with five greys, from the light, silvery tone of Ermine, through the cooler neutrals of Sidewalk and Glint to the stronger greys of Concrete and Paraffin. Queenstown, a textured two-colour rib, has seven more colourways. Urban is grey, while Gull and Whale are warmer neutrals. Delft, Cadet and Ink reflect the bluer shades of grey, and Baltic

has a delicate cool green feel. ‘Both ranges now boast a comprehensive colour bank which echoes current interiors trends and gives the customer the subtle variety of choice they are looking for,’ says Wilson. ‘Made using 100% Laneve wool these ranges have unrivalled clarity of colour. The wool is traceable back to individual farmers in New Zealand who operate using the highest standards of animal welfare and environmental management. Our unique ultra light action back does not delaminate and is almost impossible to crease. Fitters love working with it and it performs well long term,’ he adds. Fabric exhibition Proposte reinforced its international appeal as it celebrated its 25th anniversary. The show hosted 89 exhibitors, which have a combined turnover of over â‚Ź1bn. When it began in 1993, it had just 44 exhibitors, of which 38 were Italian. Fast forward to 2017 and visitors saw 89: 42 Italian, 16 Belgian, seven Spanish, five French, five British, four German, four Turkish, two Dutch, one Austrian, one

Swiss and for the first time two American. While the show largely remains the same from its foundation – having hit upon a winning formula early on – this year’s event saw a noticeable reduction in Italian visitors but a significant increase in visitors from China, the USA, Russia, Australia, Spain and Germany. The high quality was stressed by the exhibitors with emphasis on the top end: 14% of products were super luxury; 24% were luxury, 35% were high end, 20% medium market, and 7% mass market, in an infinite array of colours and types. The types of products include jacquard (20%) and dobby (20%) fabrics for upholstered furniture; jacquard (16%) and dobby (15%) curtains, as well as velvets (8%), embroidered curtains (4%) and trimmings (1%). Prints continued its growth, both for upholstery and curtains, and now account for 8% of products. The UK is the second largest export market for exhibitors, accounting for 21%, behind only the USA on 23%. This is followed by Germany on 12% (more German visitors have attended Proposte than any other nation in the past quarter of a century); and France (8%). Alongside the show 42 other fabric companies exhibited at four nearby venues as part of the International Observatory, adding to the attraction of visitors. Visit: www.propostefair.it

Benefits package Products are backed up by business support ‘SMG has something for every retailer, large or small, long established or just starting out. Members run their business as they see fit but gain advantage from the most comprehensive package of benefits which really can’t be beaten,’ says Mike Reed, SMG head of group operations. ‘Independent retailers are attracted to joining SMG as the group guarantees that members can retain their complete independence but at the same time benefit from preferential discounts, rebate schemes and promotions from a comprehensive range of approved suppliers. Not only that, they can access products from any approved supplier via our central purchasing scheme, even without a direct account.’ As well as access to and preferential terms with flooring manufacturers, SMG offers members the chance to sell own branded product. ‘With new products frequently added and with the ability to own brand for retailers as required, there is always something new to add to the retailer’s arsenal in the fight against multiples and etailers,’ says Reed.

The group now represents more than 380 retail outlets in the UK, and as well as adding to its product proposition, it has developed a comprehensive business support package. ‘Not only do members benefit from great terms but SMG offers a business support package that is second to none. With a free of charge business support helpline, bespoke SMG retail insurance, discounted utility brokerage and preferential credit card rates, as well as amazing discounts on purchase and leasing of company vehicles, it really is an all round great deal. The business support elements alone have helped save significant amounts of money for members, and has been a factor in membership recruitment this year,’ he says. The key driver for SMG has always been to create profitable partnerships between members and approved suppliers. They have the same goals,
Reed says, and the group helps deliver more sales and greater profitability for both. ‘As if all this weren’t enough, SMG is also extremely proud to be able to offer members the opportunity to buy furniture and beds from some of the top manufacturers in the market. This gives our members the opportunity to diversify or to link sell furnishings to their customers,’ adds Reed. Visit: www.smg-group.co.uk

Serving independence Metro has been helping retailers since 1979 The Metro group has been serving independent retailers for almost 40 years from the smallest one-man operation to multiple outlet businesses. Originally created to protect the smaller retailer from the buying power of the multiples, Metro has developed with the times to provide its members with an increasing portfolio of services and benefits. Retaining independence is vital to members, which is why all group activity is optional rather than obligatory. This allows members to select the best benefits of group membership while being 100% in control of their own business. Metro works by negotiating the lowest possible prices from leading suppliers as a ÂŁ50m group rather than as an individual retailer. As well as access to preferential terms and promotions, a key feature of membership is the ability to share information and business issues with like-minded retailers openly either at area meetings or directly. Since 1995 the group has developed an own label brand, Carpet 1st, encompassing the bestselling and performing products. Professional own branding protects margins, especially from online retailers, and members can maximise their profits while supporting the group and authorised suppliers.
