The Flooring Show Yorkshire
EXHIBITION GUIDE
More than 2,300 visitors attended in 2013
There will be two demo zones this year
Growing interest A high level of exhibitor interest in 2014’s The Flooring Show is evidence that the event is on course for expansion as the economy recovers. Changing the dates to later in September rather than the traditional late August/early September period is also expected to enhance the appeal of the show to a wider range of exhibitors and visitors. Held in its 51st year at its traditional home in Harrogate, The Flooring Show 2013 attracted just under 120 exhibiting brands from 12 countries, occupying around 3,000sqm of floorspace in four halls. Some 2,300 trade visitors from 17 countries attended, including about 1,300 flooring retailers and distributors – broadly similar to the previous year’s footfall. ‘Space sales growth for 2014 is very pleasing; with three months still to run, firmly contracted exhibition space already comfortably exceeds the 2013 show total. New enquiries are coming through on a daily basis, and a number of the halls are now full, or virtually full,’ says Paul Stott, co-organiser. Master Weaver is making a welcome return to the show, and other brands recently booking include Adam Carpets, Bembe; Callavi; Ardex UK; Merryfield; Karpet King; Fair Packaging; Earthwerks; Ambassador Antalis Packaging; Carpet Gripper Direct; Serdim Hali; Tuplex; CPS Labels and Quick-Step Academy. ‘Another interesting feature is the strong showing by Chinese companies;

Theresa Raymond, show co-director, adds: ‘Our decision to maintain the traditional time and location has been completely vindicated and we are already planning to make the show considerably bigger in 2016. We’re already struggling to accommodate everyone who wants to exhibit next January.’ Next year will be the 25th consecutive year that a furniture exhibition has been held during January at the NEC.

EXHIBITION GUIDE
The show will be held at Olympia
Additional show for autumn Since its launch three years ago, Home has doubled in size and enjoyed a 35% rise in visitor numbers. This year will see the first autumn edition of the show, taking place alongside Top Drawer at Olympia from 14-16 September as it looks to continue its formula of combining expert selection, future trends and key brands. The show is already more than 80% sold, with key exhibitors such as LSA International, Alessi, Bloomingville, PR Home, Grand Illusions, Parlane, Make International, Whitbread Wilkinson and Grunwerg among the first to sign up. ‘We welcome the launch of Home in September. Our customers are enjoying the well-edited show, with its collection of leading home brands brought together in London, the capital of design. January’s Home was a great success for us, and we are confident that the quality and excitement of the show will be hard
to beat,’ says Monika Lubkowska-Jonas, LSA International creative director. The appeal of the combined event is likely to be strengthened significantly by the announcement that Home is to run twice yearly – both editions of the event boast some impressive content, much of which is exclusive to Home Commenting on the launch of the
autumn edition and the growth of Home in general, Jill Webb, Conran brand development director, says: ‘In Home, Clarion has given the UK a dedicated homewares and interior accessories show, and did it with style, expertise and insight, so we’re very excited by the news that Home is now to run twice a year. EXHIBITION GUIDE
Face-to-face Although doing business digitally has gained interest in recent years, Meet only Original Designs pays attention to doing business face-to-face. Networks are best created when people physically meet each other. MoOD fulfils two tasks here. First, MoOD is a compact, clearly readable trade show with a direct business style. It occupies a unique position where all exhibitors are producers and owners of their creations and so are a direct contact point for the development or adaptation of products. Second, MoOD provides the right visitor, thanks to a product range that encompasses everything, from design (Indigo) to threads (MoOD Yarns) to collections in upholstery, window and wall coverings that can be situated in the middle to the highest segment. In September, MoOD announced a move to hall 5, the Patio, and hall 8 of Brussels Expo. The exhibitors have been grouped as much as possible according to their specialisation, so visitors can plan their appointments. The projects are divided over the halls. The most striking is the trend forum at the entrance of hall 5. The overarching theme Attention! includes three sub-themes: Borderline, Damnation, and the Power of Play. The sample banks will also be set up by the entrance to hall 5 providing a brief overview of the show. The Blue Drop selection has become a walk of fame and this year there will be a visitors award. The show takes over halls 5 and 8 and the Patio

Rooms of Integrity and Style Carpet sells on colour and style. However there is increasing demand for integrity and for brands that show their origin. Wools of New Zealand has been leading the sustainability charge for some time. Being sustainable is not just about having a fibre from a natural source, being truly sustainable means delivering products that have a social, ethical and eco conscience. The carpet buying public is very aware of false claims on not only pricing but also on what is actually in the product and who made the product. Delivering the ultimate in sustainability does not alone sell carpets. The first thing to get right is colour and style. To that end, WNZ employs a team of design and carpet specialists who work with our partners to develop market-leading products. A recent success has been Crucial Trading’s
Biscayne Stripe by Crucial Trading in Laneve wool
move to put all of its 100% New Zealand wool products under the Laneve banner. Crucial Trading worked with the WNZ creative team, headed by Joanna Ramsden, to create Biscayne Stripe. Flock Carpet’s range of luxury Axminster and sculptured tufted effects are all developed by the WNZ creative team to ensure that the products are the ultimate in design as well as being ethically produced in line with Flock’s ethos. WNZ picked up multiple awards for innovation in carpet design at Domotex in January and it continues to push the boundaries, guiding brand partners towards a more stylish and profitable future. The team works from the farm, right through the value chain, and can pull together the right fibre, spinning, tufting and weaving to deliver exceptional style and integrity but also with great efficiency and value. The 100% wool products that qualify for WNZ’s Laneve brand are promoted on a dedicated UK website: www.laneve.co.uk. Also listed on the website are high-quality retailers who have joined WNZ as Premier Partners Showrooms.

It also provided the opportunity to display its full product range with the updated rug offer of which a quarter of the range has been revised. The past year has seen more companies become suppliers to the buying group, such as Meister and Parador for laminate and Earthwerks for LVT. Wool Owners Warranty and the Carpet Foundation’s website scheme were promoted to members, and a new updated carpet care brochure in two different styles and personalised for each member is now available in a new convenient compact size. Hi-Performa, a soft-contract range of polypropylene carpets was also introduced. ‘The show is very important to the group and the members as it is the only time they are able to see the full product range in all of its glory, while meeting the team and their fellow members to discuss what it happening with their business and the market,’ says Glenn Harding, Flooring One controller. ‘Such discussions are a vital part of what we can help members with so they can make the maximum use of being a Flooring One member while at the same time retaining their independence.’ Flooring One, tel: 0121 683 1426
