EDITOR’S COMMENT

Andrew Kidd EDITOR

A numbers game It has been a month where numbers have caught my attention, telling some fascinating stories (and an odd one) DFS has seen gross annualised sales top the £1bn mark for the first time. From that it made an annualised £65m profit. The stock market values the chain at £568.87m. UK like for like sales growth of 1.4% was experienced by Carpetright in the quarter to 22 April. It expects full year profits to be nearer £13.9m than £16.2m. Its share price plunged as a result, valuing the chain at £155m. Victoria executive chairman Geoff Wilding delighted shareholders by telling them profits will be ‘comfortably’ ahead of expectations. He then delighted his bank manager by selling 4.4% of the shares in the company, worth £18.4m. Victoria is valued at £437m. Online mattress seller Eve Sleep sells 100

mattresses a day (as of October), worth £14.5m a year. It wants to raise £35m from investors, according to Business Insider, valuing it at £200m. We are all familiar with technology companies getting huge valuations (£25bn for Snapchat, for example, despite it losing £400m last year and admitting it may never make a profit), but can a two year old company selling what is really a commoditised product be worth so much? To put these into context, ScS has a value of £60m, Headlam £529m and Dunelm (which broke the £1bn gross barrier in 2015 and makes twice as much as DFS) is valued at £1.22bn. Consumers are replacing their beds every 7.4 years, according to National Bed Federation research, and spending an average of £505 when they do so. The figures also showed the importance of allowing shoppers the option of making the order online: if you don’t almost half the market is cut off from you, and it seems 35-44 year-olds spend the most. Thanks to those of you who have already voted in the 2017 Interiors Monthly Awards: a vote that you can get interested in.

Wilding sells £18m of shares as Victoria profits on the up Geoff Wilding, Victoria executive chairman, has raised £18.4m from selling shares in the flooring group. He sold 4million shares at 460p each. The sale sees Wilding’s stake fall from to 33.5% to 29.1%. ‘I agreed to the share sale in order to meet continuing institutional demand and improve the liquidity of Victoria’s shares and to further build the company’s shareholder base. I remain the largest shareholder in Victoria with over 29% of the shares and, given this fact, shareholders can be assured I remain wholly committed to Victoria’s objective: “to create wealth for our shareholders”. I will not be selling any further shares for the foreseeable future,’ says Wilding. Victoria is currently valued at £437m, making Wilding’s remaining stake worth £127.1m. The share sale came after the group told shareholders that underlying pre-tax profits for the year ended 1 April will be ‘comfortably ahead of current consensus market expectations’: analysts have forecast profits of about £28m. ‘The group’s performance has benefited from operational synergies following the integration of recent acquisitions in the UK and Australia, which have continued to positively impact gross profit margins and overheads throughout the current financial year. Further improvements are expected in the coming financial year as the group benefits from the further expertise and input of Philippe Hamers, the new group chief executive, who started with Victoria on 20 March,’ says the group. The company says it remains focused on its strategy to create wealth for shareholders. Ongoing operational

Victoria profits are forecast at around £28m

improvements are expected to continue to ‘deliver very good organic earnings growth over the coming 12 months’. Additionally, it has invested a significant amount of time during the past year identifying further suitable acquisition opportunities within Victoria’s existing markets and, importantly, Europe. ‘The group’s banks continue to be very supportive and there remains considerable headroom in existing facilities. The board is confident it will deliver another year of significant earnings accretive acquisition growth in addition to underlying organic growth,’ says the company.

Nickolds: JL must reinvent itself The new md of John Lewis, Paula Nickolds, says the chain will continue to open stores but needs to reinvent itself. ‘The era of channel [of online or store] is over. What we’re really embarking on now is a world, where for consumers, channels are completely merged and we need to think that way. When I’m talking about reinventing the department store, I’m not talking about physical space, I’m talking about the holistic provision of services that a department store can provide. ‘Do I believe in shops? Absolutely. Shops are not just a route to sell things, they are an invitation for customers to

6

Interiors Monthly May 2017

experience our brand, and what we stand for,’ she says. Nickolds says she has ‘inherited a business in really good shape, but we need to change. We are seeing input prices rising substantially, no doubt... but we don’t yet know how much will be passed on. It’s a pretty volatile environment.’ She warns that consumer confidence had fallen. ‘Customers are feeling a little less certain of their financial security and that is starting to come through in our conversations.’ Nickolds says the chain would look to cut back office costs and have more staff

concentrating on dealing with customers as well as offering more services to encourage them to visit stores. ‘The two most significant concerns over the next couple of years are our trading arrangements and at least as important, and probably more so, is the experience for EU nationals working in John Lewis,’ she explains. The chain and sister company Waitrose has up to 2,000 non-UK EU employees. Nickolds also warned that the increased costs faced by retailers meant that retailing would be ‘a structurally less profitable operation than it was.’

DFS sales top £1bn Profits rose at DFS as annualised sales passed the £1bn level. Gross sales at the upholstery chain increased by 7% in the six months to 30 January to £493.7m. This included like for like growth of 5.4%. Pre-tax profits were up by 3.1% to £16.7m. ‘We also enjoyed increased contributions from Dwell and Sofa Workshop as we continued to grow these brands through the conversion of former DFS warehouse areas into new retail space. Group gross sales for the 52-week period ended 28 January 2017 were £1,012.8m, taking us past the £1bn sales milestone for the first time in our 47-year history,’ says Ian Filby, DFS ceo. As well as increasing the interim dividend by 5.7% to 3.7p, DFS will also pay shareholders a special dividend of 9.5p on 21 June.

The company says although consumer confidence has held up well, it recognises that furniture retailing in the UK faces an increased risk of a market slowdown in 2017 because of the uncertain political and economic outlook. ‘We saw in the first half some impact on our margins from adverse currency movements. We are taking actions to mitigate these pressures through range management and supplier negotiations,’ says Filby. ‘The scale of our business gives us significant advantages that allow us consistently to offer outstanding value to our customers. The flexibility of our cost base, our investments in infrastructure and our vertically integrated business model add to our confidence that we are very well positioned to respond to economic headwinds and cost pressures.’

Foam float mooted Online foam mattress retailer Eve Sleep is considering a London stock market flotation, that would value it at £200m. The two year-old company is looking to raise £35m, according to press reports. It has already raised £17m from private investors. The company declined to comment. Last October the company said it was selling 700 mattresses a week to customers in the UK, US, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and France.

Holloways of Ludlow returns to its first Home Interiors retailer Holloways of Ludlow has opened its second Home store: at the original Ludlow site where it began as a family architectural salvage business in 1985. The store is next door to the Holloways Period House Shop, opened in 1995, offering period interior fittings including paints, lighting, bathroom fittings, and radiators, needed to complete traditional decoration or restoration projects. The first Home store opened in Brasted, Kent in 2015. ‘I am delighted to expand the Holloways of Ludlow Home brand in the exact location that my family first opened the first business in Corve Street, Ludlow, over 30 years ago. We are dedicated to offering customers a handpicked range of beautiful home, furniture and giftware that are available both in-store and online,’ says Mark Holloway, Holloways of Ludlow director. Carpetright growth slows

people

Carpetright has told shareholders that UK like for like sales growth slowed from 1.9% in the previous quarter to 1.4% in the quarter to 22 April. It warned that full year profits would be towards the lower range of market expectations of between £13.9m and £16.2m. ‘In common with other retailers in the home improvement sector in the UK we have experienced tougher trading conditions over the last three months. Having said that, we are pleased to report continued like for like sales growth, with an increase of 1.4% in our fourth quarter,’ says Wilf Walsh, Carpetright chief executive. In the final quarter it has completed 188 store refurbishments, exceeding the 150 store target, which represents over 40% of the UK estate. ‘Despite the inevitable disruption factor, the performance of these refurbished stores has been encouraging giving us confidence to continue with the programme,’ he says. Trading in the rest of Europe was in line with expectations, underpinned by a continuing recovery in economic confidence, particularly in the Netherlands. ‘While we remain confident in our turnaround plan, the level of sales growth in our final quarter leads us to expect that full year profits will be towards the lower end of the current range,’ adds Walsh. During the quarter three stores were opened (Liverpool, Leeds and Bath), two were relocated to smaller units, and three closed, leaving 427 stores. In Europe sales in euros rose by 11%.

Door to door Lago offers doors, but not as we know them Lago has a choice of doors for its wardrobes. The NOW (Not Only White) wardrobe is available in 32 colours and the glass panels can be customised in 1cm widths. It is available with sliding or push-pull doors. Coordinating wallpaper and flooring is available, making the wardrobe disappear into the background. Et Voila abandons doors altogether, replacing it with a fabric cover (which can be dry cleaned) that can be changed to give the room a new look. Thanks to the reduced weight, the wardrobe can be suspended on the wall. It is available in 53cm and 65.4cm depths and the Tree metal clothes rack has adjustable arms. Duee is a sliding-door wardrobe that gives the impression of two inter-penetrating volumes, with one seeming to be nested inside the other. The door of the external volume extends beyond one end, creating a niche that can be fitted out with hangers and shelves (it is also available with a plain end). The external volume is available in all of the Lago finishes, while the internal volume and the internal side of the niche can be lacquered or covered in lacquered glass. Appaloosa takes two days to make

Check mates Hästens’ classic check now has a modern twist For the first time since its introduction in 1978, luxury bed manufacturer Hästens has reimagined its signature blue check fabric with the Appaloosa and Marwari beds, both of which use the construction of the Hästens 2000T bed. A two-year collaboration with Swedish design duo Carl Philip Bernadotte and Oscar Kylberg saw the creation of two fabrics that bring to life the vision of Bernadotte & Kylberg, while also upholding the comfort and construction of Hästens’ beds. ‘We could not have imagined a more suitable partner than Bernadotte & Kylberg to interpret our signature blue check, with a truly innovative and modern performance. Both Appaloosa and Marwari exceeded our expectations and the result pushes the boundaries of what is Hästens classical design,’ says Jan Ryde, Hästens executive chairman and fifth-generation owner. ‘We were very excited when we were contacted by Hästens. It felt very tempting to work with such a classic Swedish brand, which also has such a strong graphical expression,’ says Oscar Kylberg, Bernadotte & Kylberg president. ‘For us as designers, it is equally important with the two-dimensional expression in the pattern of the threedimensional shape of the bed. To interpret such iconic designs was challenging, but exciting, and we are very proud of the result.’ With inspiration from the cubism era, Appaloosa is a reinterpretation of

Hästens’ signature blue check fabric

Marwari is a rich brown

Hästens’ classic blue and white colours. The interweaving of these original colours created the new pattern, where four colour fields make up a graphic abstraction and gives a sense of movement. The designer duo wanted the viewer to see the pattern and recognise it as a Hästens bed, but with a modern twist. For the creation of the original detailing in Marwari’s new fabric, Hästens used a similar process to that in creating a saddle girth, which braids natural fibres in a unique way and connects to Hästens’ roots as master saddlers. The bed also incorporates vegetable dyed leather pieces to create a border on the base of the bed as well as the headboard. The Marwari bed is a rich brown colour, similar to that of the Marwari horse, with a matching headboard, vegetable dyed leather accents and signature brass plate. Each bed takes almost one week to create. The beds will be available globally

from January 2018. Appaloosa has an introductory price of €32,990 (£28,000) and Marwari €49,900 (£42,400). The move comes after Hästens expanded its UK retail presence to seven outlets with the opening of studios in Midfurn’s Alcester, Warwickshire store and Cookes Furniture’s Birmingham and Christchurch, Dorset stores. The Midfurn store displays the Luxuria and Auroria beds, alongside a small selection of accessories. Cookes will offer the Luxuria, Auroria and Proferia. Each studio has a dedicated member of staff. ‘We are excited to offer our devoted UK customers the choice of seven stockists across the UK following these three new developments. Each store reflects the exclusive and bespoke experience that is essential to the Hästens charm, and we are excited to continue to make and develop our beds that have led us to global recognition,’ says Oliver Bowen, Hästens UK manager. Wigan Warriors is one of Sealy UK’s World of Sport ambassadors

Playing a blinder Sealy’s innovation doesn’t just extend to beds, it covers ‘sporting events’ also Sealy UK will host its Brooklands Bed Show at the Surrey museum on 16-17 May. The company plans to unveil a number of products, including a newlook Posturepedic bed. The relaunch of this range will include a new set of aesthetics and technology, showcasing Sealy’s innovative advances in bed technology. The event also provides retailers with the opportunity of viewing Sealy’s full range in one room. ‘Our Brooklands Bed Show has become extremely popular throughout the industry, as it provides retailers with the opportunity to gather valuable insight on sector trends and developments, as well as learn about Sealy’s entire product range,’ says Neil Robinson, Sealy UK sales and marketing director. ‘Our 2016 show was such a great success, so we are hoping to build on that enthusiasm this year. We are dedicated to innovation here at Sealy and strive to provide new and exciting

32

products for our buyers and their customers. That’s why we’re so excited about our Posturepedic relaunch; it truly is a whole new look for Sealy UK. Given the show’s timing – several months before September’s The Bed Show – it gives attendees the chance to get ahead of the game,’ he says. Following the Brooklands event, Sealy will be at The Bed Show with it its World of Sport ambassador rugby league team, Wigan Warriors. Sealy recently teamed up with the club to take part in an April Fools’ Day prank. Filmed following the team’s World Club Championship victory earlier this season, the trick was designed to showcase a softer side to the team: revealing its secret training weapon was a sport dubbed Pillow Pilates. Of course, the trick wasn’t all fun and games, there was a scientific reason behind it. Stress and tension relief are crucial to achieving a good night’s sleep and with such a physically demanding

job, this is of paramount importance for the Wigan Warriors. ‘It also transpires that not many people realise how important it is for the mind to be relaxed before going to sleep, or indeed before embarking on a highpressure challenge, such as a big sporting event. This simply added to the authenticity of the prank: making it extremely believable that the Wigan Warriors would be advocates of this made-up team-building and pressure relieving activity,’ says Robinson. Pillow Pilates was portrayed as a glorified pillow fight designed to offer some relief from the team’s intensive training regime of cardio and weights. Training supposedly took place weekly, with every team member being presented with a Sealy pillow before congregating on the rugby pitch. Once assembled, the fight began on the command of a whistle and continued until there was only one man standing. ‘The team has an extreme training regime, which pushes the players to their

physical limit. Pillow Pilates was supposedly introduced as a great way for them to let off a bit of steam and channel their competitive nature, which is so crucial to the game. Since we were using pillows, there was a very low risk of anyone getting hurt, so the team had a real opportunity to give it their all: a mindset we’re keen on capturing before a big game. Needless to say, the pitch was quite a sight during the battle, but everyone left with a smile on their face,’ comments Mark Bitcon, Wigan Warriors director of performance. Sealy persuaded the players to get fully behind the prank, with player Sam Tomkins commenting: ‘I suspected it might be some sort of initiation ceremony when I first joined the team. Having never done anything like this before, I was initially a little reluctant to join in, but soon I was the first one on the

pitch brandishing my pillow. It’s all a bit of fun and an activity that really helped bring the team together.’ To cement the prank’s authenticity a photoshoot and video took place with Sky Sports reporter Brian Carney while the Wigan Warriors were engaged in a staged Pillow Pilates training session. ‘Suffice to say, the Wigan Warriors do not regularly partake in Pillow Pilates sessions but are all sleeping and training well since receiving their Sealy beds,’ says Robinson. ‘In fact, they are so enamoured by them that they have requested a couple of beds to be placed in the stadium for those needing a quick power nap after a particularly gruelling training session.’ Visit: www.sealy.co.uk

Drawn into the web More shoppers are opting to buy online The number of consumers shopping online for a bed has jumped in recent months, and could soon become the buying method for most people. Between last September and February this year, 46% of bed purchases were made online: a 17% increase compared to March 2016 to August 2016, according to research by the National Bed Federation. The NBF carries out regular consumer research, surveying 500 people who have bought a new bed in the previous six months. ‘In-store bed sales, which have traditionally always been a much higher percentage, is a very close 51%. This confirms the rise of Internet shopping and that the consumer is looking for convenience and an instant result when shopping for a new bed,’ says Simon Williams, NBF marketing manager. ‘What is interesting about the results is that Internet shopping has increased but only 2% reported buying their mattress from one of the new, one size fits all, online-only companies. Buying a mattress online may be cheaper and more convenient, but there are drawbacks to not being able to see and feel items. We’d always advise shoppers to try before they buy, even if they make the final purchase online.’ A quarter of people still buy from big national bed specialists, and 17% opt for a local, independent bed store. ‘Both big and independent retail outlets across the UK stock NBF Approved beds, and it is encouraging to see the consumer will still seek them out,’ he says. Another positive outcome of the survey shows 26% of 16-24

year-olds and 25-34 year-olds said they had seen the NBF Approved logo during their shopping journey. ‘Our mission at the NBF is to champion good practice and high standards in the UK bed industry, and it’s important that manufacturers and retailers provide reassurance to consumers that the products they are buying are safe, clean and honest,’ adds Williams. A standard double is still the most popular bed size (45%), with 29% of people opting for a king size, up from 26% in the last quarter, according to the survey. The average replacement cycle was 7.4 years, with 69% of respondents saying they replaced their mattress in under 10 years. For pricing, the average paid for a new bed was £505, with 35-44 year-olds spending the most, on average £609. The three most important factors when making the purchasing decision were comfort, price and style/design. Visit: www.bedfed.org.uk

Delivering good service Investment has continued at Highgrove Highgrove Beds Group has invested a further £500,000 extending its Liversedge, West Yorkshire distribution centre and adding five vehicles to its delivery fleet. This will ensure the company can maintain its Fastersleep seven-day delivery service as it looks to further increase market share. ‘Development of the new site continues and although the majority of the building work is now complete, there are several other major projects in the pipeline – including the commissioning of a new IT system and new machinery to further improve business efficiency,’ says Shane Harding, Highgrove Beds Group head of marketing. ‘Our delivery fleet is now one of the most modern in the industry and this

ensures that our customers, wherever they’re located in the UK, will continue to benefit from fast and efficient delivery.’ Highgrove Beds Group now has three main brands in its portfolio: Highgrove, moresleep and Sanctum, all targeting different market sectors. A group website has been created and the websites for the Highgrove and moresleep brands updated. In addition to providing a wide range of trade and consumer information, the websites have been designed with password protected trade sections that allow stockists to download brochure images, logos and specification sheets. Extra features include a warranty and bed care section, which in addition to providing tips on looking after a new

bed, also allows consumers to register their purchase online. A website for Sanctum is in the final stages of development with the new models having recently been photographed and the final design layout now approved. More than £50,000 has been invested in a modular in-store display system for the Sanctum brand. Featuring lightboxes and TV displays, each is tailored to store design needs and are supplied free to appointed stockists that commit to a minimum of three floor models. The sofa sits below the large mirror with polished chrome or matt burnished edges. By pulling the handles in the sides of the mirror, the wall unit rotates and forms the supporting feet when the bed is horizontal. Mattress support is slatted

and the bed has a double mattress duvet cover, a soft headboard with removable covers, and a shelf. The bed can be stowed away easily; when it is raised, the feet are recessed and the sofa and mirror reappear. With London Bridge when the wall unit is pulled down, the sofa disappears revealing a ready-made bed. It has a padded headboard with removable covers, a slatted support and a double

mattress. When the shelf drops down, it forms the support base for the bed. It also rotates when the wall unit is pulled down so there is no need to empty it. The finishes of the internal and external surfaces of the wall units can be selected from the Flou collection. easyturn in three easy moves 1. Unzip the easyturn mattress top 2. Flip it over 3. Zip it back up again. Done. Top quality beds such as ours tend to be more generous with the fillings. This makes for a great sleep but adds to the weight of the mattress, making turnability a real issue for many customers. The standard answer to this is to make the mattress no-turn, which consequently can affect longevity. Well, we’ve turned convention on its head with the ingenious easyturn system. This clever design keeps most of the weight in one section, making the layer that actually needs turning much more manageable. Three models were launched at the Bed Show; we’re sure once you try easyturn you’ll never want to turn back to those pre-revolution days.

Mattress turning points Hush-a-Bye’s easyturn tackles turnability in a different way Innovation is at the centre of Airsprung Group’s Hush-a-Bye brand. The company’s latest introduction is easyturn: a mattress range with a zipped, double-sided fillings layer. ‘At Hush-a-Bye we look for the real issues that customers are concerned with and then solve them. For example, better quality beds such as ours tend to have more fillings and are therefore heavier. This means that “turnability” is a real issue for many of our customers,’ says Andy Richards, Hush-a-Bye sales director. The standard approach has been to make the mattress no-turn but this has

48

Interiors Monthly May 2017

an impact on settlement and longevity. ‘We have turned this convention on its head and tackled the problem from a different angle and easyturn is the ingenious solution,’ he says. ‘It’s quite obvious that a large proportion of the weight in a quality mattress is taken up by the spring system. Through testing we could see that the support given by the pocket springs is unlikely to degrade or diminish over the lifetime of the mattress. Our solution was straightforward; a support layer that doesn’t need turning and a double-sided fillings layer that turns

easily. Of course, putting this into practice was more involved. We had to make sure that the solution maintained all the benefits of a traditional mattress whilst keeping the turning process as simple as possible,’ he explains. The ability to easily turn the mattress brings another benefit. Hush-a-Bye recommends turning or rotating mattresses every few weeks but with easyturn users can turn them every time they change the sheets, constantly giving a fresh sleeping surface. There are three models in the range, from 1,000 to 3,000 pocket springs, with a positive response from the trade. One of the first retailers to feature them is Leekes. Convinced of the need for this system, it has dedicated an easyturn gallery area in two stores. The launch of easyturn follows the introduction of Coolwave, a latex gel range tackling the challenges of delivering the benefits of foam support without the heat issues and demonstrates Hush-a-Bye’s approach to problems from a different perspective. Rather than start with a warming product such as memory foam and then try to make it cooler, it started with latex,

an inherently cooler material. Added to the latex is a cooling gel that has been shown in independent tests to absorb heat considerably slower than memory foam, thereby keeping the sleeping surface much cooler. Richards says the company supports bricks and mortar retailers, supplying them with a wide range of stylish, mid-market pocket sprung beds. ‘We also offer a truly flexible approach with the ability to produce special sizes and bespoke options. This gives the smaller, independent retailer a fantastic opportunity to offer a choice and the ability to demonstrate a real point of difference,’ he says. ‘The retailer support does not end with the product as we recognise that independent stores have much to offer that the Internet can’t match. Most obvious is the personal interaction with the customer, backed with a deep understanding of the product. That is why we run training days for our retailers. With a complete run-through of the features and benefits of the entire range and incorporating a factory visit, there is something for everyone, whether they have been selling beds for 20 years or are new to the industry. ‘Hush-a-Bye is a company with a long history but these recent product developments are rapidly gaining us a reputation as an innovative brand,’ adds Richards. Italian textile company Mirabello Carrara has expanded the Diesel Living brand into bedlinen, towels and bathware. Diesel Living’s signature jeans and grunge inspiration is married with opaque shades resulting in a colour palette that includes natural shades such as grey, sand, natural white up to pink antique and military green. Prints reproduce the themes of the natural world, even the wildest: like Crackle, inspired by an arid desert, where irregular cracks give rise to geometry which discard the obvious; or Rock Water, which reproduces the marble in natural colours. It also finds space in Hanami and Dark Field, revisiting the traditional floral pattern of Maison Mirabello. Visit: www.mirabellocarrara.it

CARPET

On a roll Brintons is having a successful year Brintons had a great start to the year, winning three awards at the International Wool Carpet and Rugs Awards in March: Creative Marketing Initiative for the Fleece to Floor Campaign; Woven Carpet Design Installation of the Year for Queen Mary II; and Design Collaboration of the Year for Altered Gravity collection by Stacy Garcia. It has also introduced New Neutrals, soft muted shades that complement the current trend for elegant and refined interiors. Adding to the popular Bell Twist collection, Brintons created additional colours to be a soothing and calming influence in the home, providing a backdrop for creative interiors. The full Bell Twist colour palette has more than 60 colours and is regularly updated to reflect changing styles. Bell Twist has been in production for more than 50 years. Its textured surface makes it exceptionally hardwearing, hence its popularity. Brintons also offers a wide selection of patterned axminster collections including tartans, stripes, geometrics and florals. For those looking for a quick contract solution, QuickWeave has three colour palettes: Inception, Aurora and Sequence. Created for those who work on assignments with tight deadlines, the collection is a made-to-order woven axminster carpet range offering a turnaround time of six weeks. Brintons’ design team created a variety of options to reflect today’s trends with contemporary patterns complementing transitional styles such as plaids, stripes, geometric, abstract and layered design themes. Free samples are available and there is a choice of five quality specifications from 7 to 11 rows. Suitable for contract and heavy domestic installations, this series provides a wealth of opportunities to service customers and projects with a flexible solution. Visit: www.brintons.co.uk

WHOLESALE

Stock and show Besp-Oak is holding an open house event to mark its investment in stock and upgraded technology

Besp-Oak Furniture has invested heavily in making the supply of container stock as quick as possible. Storing stock at its overseas factory results in lead times of six to eight weeks on direct container orders. Using intelligent data analysis, more than 750 lines have been selected, manufactured, and stored ahead of the new fast track ordering system being introduced in July. Retailers can order any number of lines. Stock holding takes into account the massive increase in demand for painted furniture as well as oak. Over the past two to three years the company has noticed a change in trend with more customers ordering from the Vancouver Expressions and Chalked Oak collections, which offers a choice of numerous popular painted colours with golden oak or chalked oak tops. In light of the new painted trend, Steve Mosley, Besp-Oak md, introduced the Rosa collection, which features a new cornice design, at the January Furniture Show and Spring Fair. These ranges will be on display, alongside thousands of trade gift, home and accessory products including hundreds of new lines exclusive to Besp-Oak, at the company’s open house event at its Coventry showroom from 19-25 June. The 32,000sqft showroom, which covers six floors, is only 15 minutes from the NEC and Birmingham International Airport and a 10 minute walk from Coventry railway station. The event coincides with the Horticultural Trades Association National Plants Show at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry from 20-21 June and there will be a free bus shuttle service from the airport and Stoneleigh Park dropping visitors near the showroom.

Show visitors will be the first to see the launch of many collections including iron kadai fire bowls, steam punk lighting and vintage shop fittings. In addition to the new collections, hundreds of lines have been added to existing ranges including table lamps, retro models and glass art wall panels. To support the new more efficient stock supply, Besp-Oak’s data systems have been upgraded and its updated website is easier to use. Customers can place container and wholesale orders at any time and check stock levels. To view prices a trade application form must be completed. The full Besp-Oak product catalogue can be seen online. ‘Lifestyle images and product shots have been a key focus for us over the last year, which is evident when browsing through thousands of inspirational products which are displayed in the showroom and held in stock,’ says Mosley. ‘We boast one of the largest wholesale storage and distribution depots which supports efficient direct deliveries and collections of all products including oak furniture, painted furniture, outdoor, lighting, signs and clocks, vintage crates, giftware and kitchenware. On-site facilities include free parking, wi-fi and catering with refreshments served throughout the day. The team endeavours to be on hand to offer assistance and guidance when required,’ adds Mosley. BUYING GROUPS

Competitive edge Greendale has its members’ best interests at heart Greendale Carpets & Flooring is a unique group owned by its members and supplies carpets exclusively for them on a non-profit basis. The group has a purpose-built warehouse in Hereford which holds more than 2,000 rolls and where orders are cut and delivered twice weekly throughout the country by a leading flooring carrier. It has more than 50 suppliers and 120 own-label carpet ranges that have been renamed to colour level. The group deals with all major UK suppliers as well as a number of leading European manufacturers. Products include main brand leaders plus exclusives that offer members enhanced value for money. All orders are serviced via the group’s office which offers sale support, customer service and full account back up to members.

Dealing with Greendale means a one stop shop for all orders and customer service matters along with an account for all transactions and one statement and payment per month. Relabelling ranges enables members to compete with multiples’ own-labels, widely distributed manufacturer’s products and Internet marketed ranges, and gives them a local exclusivity. The group actively discourages Internet marketing or national advertising as the member in their local area is the priority. ‘What this all means is that you can make more margin from Greendale ranges than widely distributed manufacturer and wholesale equivalents. Marketing support is available with the group offering a range of fully bespoke in-store units together with ticketing software. The group also offers regular

promotions and two sale periods per year where substantial extra discounts are available to members,’ says Rob Harding, Greendale chief executive. In addition to this there are other benefits. All members belong to the British Independent Retailers Association (BIRA) and thereby qualify for a range of benefits including preferential credit card rates. Greendale has its own website with information for consumers as well as a member’s area, employs agents to help members locally and runs a show for members to meet suppliers and discuss business. ‘We still have exclusive areas of the UK available and encourage any retailer who shares our ethos to get in touch,’ adds Harding. Scandi haven Carl Hansen has a Scandi sanctuary in New York If you wanted an example of Scandistyle, it would be hard to top Carl Hansen & Son’s latest New York showroom. In 2011 the Danish furniture brand opened its first US space in Soho and has increased its business fivefold since then. ‘After years of success and significant growth in the US market, it is time to strengthen our presence in New York with a new and larger showroom. New York is a hub for furniture design with some of the world’s best architects and interior designers working out of this design-led city. At the same time, interest in sublime craftsmanship and quality is also on the rise in the US,’ says Knud Erik Hansen, Carl Hansen ceo, and the third generation family member running the company. The 7,659sqft space in the Flatiron area has been designed as an inspirational and loft-like apartment rather than a traditional showroom. It comprises three separate glass-enclosed concept rooms

Malaysian International Furniture Fair Kuala Lumpur

REVIEW

Driving global trade Exhibitors and the organiser were impressed with increased interest at the show The Malaysian International Furniture Fair saw overseas visitor numbers climb to more than 5,600 at the March event. International buyers reached 5,603, a rise of 5%, as overall visitor numbers approached almost 20,000. ‘We have been exhibiting here since 1995. This year is better; it is very busy compared to previous years. We are seeing a lot of new faces,’ says Melvin Chay, Euro Chairs assistant general manager. ‘The crowds were bigger and the best so far in the seven years we have exhibited. There are more buyers from countries you don’t expect like Peru and Samoa. We have our regular customers too, from the USA,’ says Albert Tan, Premier Plus Wood Products director. ‘This has been a tremendous year for MIFF and a huge boost for our bigger show in 2018. We had expected a good turnout, but the first two days were truly extraordinary. Exhibitors reported they were kept very busy with hordes of buyers. As the organiser, we are very happy for them. It clearly shows MIFF remains a relevant platform and the driver of global furniture trade in South East Asia. We will be back even better next year,’ says Karen Goi, MIFF general manager. Next year’s MIFF will be expanded to 100,000sqm at Putra World Trade Centre and the new Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC). Visit: www.miff.com.my
