Showing the way ahead September may herald the beginning of autumn, but it’s also red-hot when it comes to seeing the latest products and trends in an exhibition packed month As memories of heatwaves begin to fade and people return to work after their August holidays, September once again presents us with the opportunity to see where the market is heading for the coming year, with a plethora of exhibitions. From The Flooring Show to Decorex and The Bed Show to Designjunction via Long Point and Superbrands (all of which are previewed in this issue) the calendar is full of must-visit events. At those shows there will be thousands of new products, some of which will go on to be top sellers. So if you want to be ahead of the competition, get your diary out and make sure you’re not missing out on the next

big thing, be it in flooring, furniture, accessories or interior design. Meanwhile, phrase of the month – Alice in Wongaland – has to go to economist Ann Pettifor, a director of Policy Research in Macroeconomics and a fellow of the New Economics Foundation think tank, who told the BBC that more optimistic economic indicators were not as rosy as they seemed and consumers had fallen back to borrowing to spend. ‘I think it’s artificial and can’t be sustained,’ she told the BBC. ‘At a fundamental level it’s quite dangerous because household debt is still 153% of GDP. There’s nothing seriously underpinning this recovery, and that’s why it’s Alice in Wongaland, the confidence fairy is out there.’ Whether Pettifor is right or not (only time will tell) there does seem to have been an improvement in consumer sentiment over the past few months, even if most of it is likely to have gone on outdoor activities during the summer. If this carries on into autumn and beyond, it becomes even more important to have the newest and best products to tempt consumers with.

Five year prison sentence given to retailer on the run Former Swindon furniture retailer Christopher Baines has been sentenced to five years in prison for fraud, but police have yet to trace him so that he can start his jail term. A jury at Swindon Crown Court found him guilty of 30 charges of fraud and not guilty on nine. A further 13 charges were thrown out as it could not be proved he had made the offer of the sale at the Mister Woodz store in Swindon from around June 2010 to April 2011. ‘Mr Baines is a professional conman. He has a record for dishonesty which stretches back to 1977, so 36 years during which he has been consistently dishonest,’ said Judge Euan Ambrose. ‘There were no fewer than 22 victims of this fraud, lost to them a little over £22,000. They all suffered anger and frustration and some considerable upset because these offences took place in the run up to Christmas.’ After they had returned their verdicts, jurors laughed when they were told of Baines’ claims for not appearing at the court, including having a leg amputated. After he pleaded not guilty in January last year – the last time he was seen – he was released on bail for a trial to start in the spring. In April 2012 he sent faxes and an email saying he had been in a car accident while on holiday in Cancun, Mexico, and sent his lawyers a picture of the car. He initially said he had a broken pelvis and femur, cracked ribs and blood clot, and then that he had a leg amputated and half of his spleen removed. With the first message was a letter in Spanish from a doctor saying he would leave hospital in late June and need at least two weeks of physiotherapy before he could travel. By August he had been expected to attend court and when he failed to show, the police made further enquiries in Central America. In the following months they received a call from Essex, where some of his family live, reporting a sighting of him – with both legs. Further enquiries with the hospital in Mexico found it had not had a man by that name undergoing an amputation following a car crash. The police believe Baines may be living in East London. He could be charged with perverting the course of justice as well as failing to surrender to custody.
Job cuts at Dreams More than a quarter of the staff at Dreams’ head office are to lose their jobs while more branches are to close. About 60 of 228 jobs will go at the High Wycombe head office, as part of a restructuring order after the purchase of the chain by Sun European in March. A further 30 jobs will go when eight branches are closed by the end of this month after lease negotiations failed.

During the trial, customer Darroll Waine told the jury that he kept detailed notes of his dealings with Mister Woodz as he quickly sensed things were going wrong. Waine told how he and his wife paid £920 for a dining room table and chairs using her credit card in June 2010. They were told delivery would take place in three weeks and his wife waited in all day on more than one occasion but nothing arrived. Because he needed the furniture when overseas visitors stayed with him, he said he was loaned another table by Baines. Despite several promises, their order never arrived and when the borrowed table was collected he said he was given a cheque that later bounced. Waine told the court that he had contact, sometimes on a daily basis, by phone, text, email and going into the shop and was given more and more excuses. In October 2010, Baines gave him £400 and told him the balance would come in a few days. But, he did not receive the money and was refunded by his credit card company. In a statement read to the court, fellow customer Jodie Johnson said she paid £1,630 for seven items of furniture and received them two months later than arranged. She returned them and was given a refund cheque, that bounced, and a replacement that also failed to clear. Antony Hawkridge, who was taken on as manager of the store, said he was owed £4,000 from the defendant. He said all the takings from the shop during his two months working there were taken to a house Baines was renting. Hawkridge, who was paid commission on top of a basic salary, told the court he paid refunds out of his own money on the promise that Baines would ‘sort him out’, but he never did. ‘Conservatively, with sales and refunds he owes me about £4,000. It is hard to say exactly,’ he said. Mike Sykes, M and S Truck Rental director, told the jury he was more than £2,600 out of pocket when Baines failed to pay for a vehicle he hired. The court was told that from around June 2010 through to April 2011, Baines defrauded 28 customers, bouncing cheques on about half of them.
Conservatory view: Conservatory furniture supplier Desser has relaunched its website as part of its online marketing campaign. ‘It’s more visually appealing with lifestyle images and has a much improved navigation system,’ says Mark Stewart, Desser sales director. Consumers can view the complete range before heading to their local stockist.

More stores as sales climb at Cath Kidston The popularity of homewares brand Cath Kidston shows no sign of waning as it plans two flagship stores in London and Shanghai. Sales topped £100m for the first time, rising by 19% to £105m in the year to 31 March. EBIDTA jumped 13% to £21m as it opened 33 branches to increase store numbers to 118. UK sales climbed 21% but the opening of its first Chinese outlets saw overseas sales jump by 53%. ‘This has been another year of strong growth for the Cath Kidston brand in all of our territories, coupled with significant investment in people and infrastructure to support future growth,’ says Kenny Wilson, Cath Kidston chief executive. ‘We will continue to grow the brand globally, including the opening of two new flagship stores in London and Shanghai later this year.’ TA Associates has owned Cath Kidston since 2010.

SMG and Minerva team up The SMG and Minerva buying groups have announced an alliance ‘that will enable them to formally work together to promote each other’s organisations as their preferred partner for the furniture and flooring sectors respectively’. SMG will also offer Minerva members access to its Business Services package, either through full membership or as a separate category of membership to retailers who do not currently operate carpet and flooring departments. ‘Although this collaboration arrangement should be viewed as a friendly and positive initiative and not a merger, I firmly believe that there are great benefits to be gained by working together. SMG’s carpet, flooring and business services packages have a lot to offer and combined with Minerva’s extensive furniture product portfolio, we are
10
confident that the prospect of “dual” SMG/Minerva membership will be extremely attractive to members of both groups,’ says Martin Lukehurst, Minerva Furnishers Guild chairman. ‘The synergy between our respective groups is remarkable and I believe that this arrangement will prove extremely beneficial for both our retail members and approved suppliers alike. A number of our major carpet and flooring suppliers have already agreed to be represented by SMG at the Minerva Members Show in Telford from 1-2 October and we will of course, be encouraging as many members as possible to attend this prestigious and long established event,’ says Chris Moffat, SMG executive chairman.

Gillian Drakeford has returned from China to become Ikea’s UK and Ireland country manager. Drakeford has worked for Ikea since 1987 when she was part of the management team that opened the first UK branch in Warrington. She also spent time at Ikea’s Hong Kong operations and has worked for Ikea China for the past decade, as country manager since 2008. During her time in the role Ikea grew from six to 11 stores in China, with four planned to open within the next year. Drakeford succeeds acting country manager, Carole Reddish, who has been named country manager for Norway. Reddish has worked for Ikea for 14 years.
The Sleep Council has launched a campaign highlighting the benefits of a good night’s sleep: Sleeptember. ‘We like to embrace new ideas for getting our messages across to the public and we felt that a month dedicated to highlighting the importance of sleep was a fun way of doing that,’ says Lisa Artis, The Sleep Council PR and marketing officer. Sleeptember is primarily a social media driven campaign using Facebook and Twitter to spread the word about getting a better night’s sleep: how to do it and why it’s good for you. The sleep Council has teamed up with This Works, a natural beauty range, and
Interiors Monthly September 2013
Tune Hotels to help promote the campaign with some giveaways. ‘We’ve tried to give retailers as many tools as possible to get on board with Sleeptember,’ says Artis. ‘The Facebook/ Twitter calendar gives a schedule of possible tweets and Facebook updates which users can literally just copy and paste. It really is important that we get the backing and support of the industry on this campaign, like we do for National Bed Month and National Sleep In Day, to make it a success. It’s another opportunity for retailers to promote, and ultimately, sell more beds.’ A retailer toolkit is available from www.sleepbiz.co.uk.

Mixed fortunes for wholesalers Furniture Origins is to close its UK wholesaling operations while Furniture Link plans to double the size of its operations. Cabinet importer Furniture Origins UK will now concentrate on its containers business. Wholesale operations will be carried out by Classic Furniture from 1 September. All orders which would have previously been placed with FOUK, will now be processed, fulfilled, and delivered by Classic Furniture. ‘Furniture Origins has worked successfully with Classic Furniture as a distribution partner for many years. Furniture Origins’ direct container operation remains unchanged. In these demanding times, we are excited to leverage Classic Furniture’s infrastructure, while continuing to support our direct container business, ensuring the best in service to all of our customers,’ says Barry Webb, Furniture Origins UK sales director. Steve Egan, Furniture Origins UK md, is to leave the company as a result of the move. ‘Whereas one side of the
business is flourishing, the wholesale side is suffering. There are some casualties including myself.’ Meanwhile, Furniture Link has planning permission for a purpose built 80,000sqft distribution depot and showroom in Telford, Shropshire. ‘The new large warehousing facility will be a massive commitment for us but our current premises do not allow for expansion,’ says James McConnell, Furniture Link md. ‘The addition of a showroom will allow us the opportunity to showcase what we do to retailers any time of the year.’ The new centre is due to be operational from February 2014 with work starting on the site within weeks. McConnell says Telford was chosen for three major reasons: current staff are able to travel to the new centre; excellent road links to the major motorway network; and it is centrally located making delivery plans easier. The company is likely to organise a series of At Home events to launch products once it opens the centre.
Walmsley’s trio go it alone
Expansion for Harrison Spinks
Three former Walmsley’s managers have teamed up to open their own store, Furniture Express. Jim Lucas, former Walmsley’s Stockton store manager; Michael Currell, former Sunderland store manager; and his brother John, a former relief manager, have opened the store in the Castlegate Shopping Centre, the site of the former Walmsley’s store. ‘Stockton was always the best store in Walmsley’s’ heyday. The Stockton store always did very well – right up until the last day. We got off on the right foot, because we didn’t have to borrow anything,’ says Lucas. Products include leather and fabric suites, bedroom and dining room collections and a full range of beds.
Bed manufacturer Harrison Spinks is to boost production after investing to expand its Leeds factory. The company has bought the 67,000sqft unit next to its existing Dewsbury Road premises. ‘We are extremely pleased to have acquired this new building as it times perfectly well with our plans to expand our mattress and divan manufacturing operations,’ says Simon Spinks, Harrison Spinks md. Meanwhile, the company is to launch a range of cot and nursery mattresses next month in association with pram maker Silver Cross. The new range has been co-designed by Spinks and Nick Paxton, Silver Cross group chief executive.

‘Our high density baby spring technology has been developed specifically for infants to ensure that they start sleep the right way. We understand the benefits from sleeping on a good mattress for adults, so it makes perfect sense that the same logic is applied for babies, after all sleep is vitally important for a baby’s development,’ says Spinks. ‘The baby spring innovation is completely unique to the nursery market. These miniature pocket springs cannot be found in any other nursery comfort product due to the patented nature of the technology. The baby springs have been designed to work in a three dimensional manner ensuring that support is correctly distributed at any given time,’ he adds.

Heatwave gave us a summer to remember We may not of had the Olympics to cheer us this summer but it has still been one to remember, if not always for the right reasons. Things started off not too badly, particularly at the better-end where at least there is still some decent margin to aim for. But then came the heatwave. Thankfully, we had a fair few outdoor sets left from last year, which in July was easily our bestseller, and now at least we don’t have them taking up space in the warehouse. Thanks to the lack of footfall we took the chance to give the place an extra polish and move bits around. Not that it was untidy or anything, but a summer update does no harm. I also took the chance to visit a few stores outside of my area and found that’s what they were doing as well. One thing I’ve tried to do is find alternatives to unbranded oak. While the big boys continue to batter each other by selling it cheaper and cheaper, it’s not an area I really want to be in. As a result I’ve been giving more prominence to my branded ranges. Yes, consumers will compare prices online, but most of my fellow retailers in the area are pricing along the same lines (and no we haven’t arranged it) and I think our customers still want the reassurance of buying from a company they know. It seems to be working, and along with putting non-oak products in better positions, cabinet sales are managing to do OK. I’d like to think we’ve got a pretty loyal base of customers, for whom we are at least the first shop they visit, and hopefully the final one. We always telephone them a couple of weeks after we’ve delivered to them just to see that everything is OK, but this year we’ve tried customer feedback forms. When the guys deliver the furniture they leave a card asking for feedback on the furniture and the whole buying process. I didn’t think we would get that many back so we offered a small monthly prize of some vouchers to encourage them. And it’s worked far better than I thought. Rather than posting them, the majority of people pop into the shop and hand them in – I don’t put a postage stamp on. It’s brought far more people into the shop and we’ve even got some good sales out of it, as they see something new or a product they didn’t look at on their previous visit.

Decade of growth Abingdon has gone from strength to strength since the MBO Next month marks the 10th anniversary of the rescue of Abingdon Flooring. In the summer of 2003 parent company Carpets International collapsed, putting Abingdon into receivership. Jim Taylor, md; Martin Peace, sales director; Robert Dight, production director; and Eddie Charlesworth, logistics director, combined to secure the funding to buy the Crumlin, Gwent carpet manufacturer, saving 300 jobs and the creator of the original Stainfree carpet. Dight describes the day he had to introduce the receiver to the workforce as the worst in his life. ‘We [the management] had been told the day before but we had to wait until 3pm so all the Carpets International sites were told at the same time. I had to sit in my office all day, not talking to anybody. I hated it.’ Now about 95% of the Crumlin staff who were there at the time of the MBO are still at Abingdon and since then employee numbers have swelled to 500, including its carpet tile operation and the Alliance distribution subsidiary. ‘Since then we’ve had five years of boom and five of recession, but we’ve always managed to grow the business and from the first year we’ve invested in the business, including technology. We invested in TV advertising last year on the Home channel: we want to build a brand,’ says Peace. In the past decade the number of tufting machines has increased from seven to 13, enabling Abingdon to produce 1m, 2m, 3m, 4m and 5m widths, and there are plans for a 14th machine. Also, a 65,000sqft yarn warehouse is opening soon replacing the unit destroyed in a fire last September. As well as making carpet at Crumlin, Abingdon also produces yarn. Having its own polypropylene extrusion plant means the company can differentiate itself from its rivals.

‘Being vertically integrated allows us to control quality, price and service. We can be more creative when it comes to products as we control the yarn production: we don’t have to buy in fixed quantities of yarn so Abingdon products will have more colours, for example, than companies buying the yarn in,’ explains Peace. Because it controls production it can quickly respond to trends and develop bespoke colours and yarn combinations. Historically, Abingdon has seen greater sales from the northern half of the UK, where consumers have opted for more textured carpets than those in the south, and retailers are more likely to buy rolls. Peace hopes its latest colour additions to Anniversary Twist, Ultimate Saxony and Stainfree Reflections will also appeal to retailers in the south. ‘The latest new additions to the Abingdon portfolio were as a result of consultation with a number of high profile retailers and extensive research into both style and colour within the home decor arena. The resulting colourways portray a very calm and contemporary colour palette that brings cool beiges, earth tones and subtle shades of grey together in a way that exudes sophistication and easy living. A touch of relaxation as an antidote to a very busy lifestyle,’ Peace says. The recognition of environmental issues has changed radically in the past decade and Abingdon is no exception. ‘We’ve combined with a local recycling company to recycle carpet waste and turn it into other products, including car dashboard fascias,’ says Dight.
The move has also saved the company a six figure sum on landfill costs. Green credentials will be boosted and more money saved in December when two wind turbines being constructed near to the plant come on stream, reducing its energy bills by 40%. ‘The last decade has seen us enjoy a fantastic rollercoaster ride with the joy and excitement of growing the business made all the more challenging by the current economic situation,’ says Peace. ‘However, the bottom line is, we all enjoy that challenge and we continue to grow the business organically through investment in all areas, whether it be products, people or ongoing capital expenditure, thus giving us constant improvement and diversification as we go forward together. We want to be the best that Britain can offer,’ he adds. Visit: www.abingdonflooring.co.uk

Turning Japanese Heuga’s latest range has green credentials and Oriental influences
Heuga has expanded its carpet tile offer with the introduction of Smart Sense, a collection of six natural and four on trend colours based on the Japanese culture. The dark brown Sancho Pepper is reminiscent of the deep colour of the spice, while the light brown Bamboo is a clear match for the plant. The deep red of Red Sun refers to the Japanese sunset and Wasabi is a fresh green named after the Japanese spice. Each colour has six different patterns to allow many design possibilities. With a random design, it can be laid in any direction which simplifies installation. Heuga says cutting waste is almost 50% less than with broadloom carpet. Smart Sense is produced from 60% recycled content and is a microtuft product so uses less yarn than with traditional production methods. The company says a well-constructed dense surface can be just as durable and hardwearing as traditionally tufted carpets, while offering an easy to clean surface and improved acoustics compared to hard floor surfaces. Heuga has also introduced the Interlay 40cm x 50cm underlay tiles. When used in combination with a Heuga loop or cut pile product, there is an additional impact sound reduction of 4dB. Start the conversation Adam Carpets wants to boost the importance of carpet Adam Carpets wants to change the way carpets are perceived by many consumers when it comes to choosing their interiors. Carpet is often the last thought after upholstery or curtains, so many retailers see customers’ budgets tightened by the time it comes to choosing the floorcovering. ‘We wanted to produce a carpet that would be included at the start of the conversation when it came to interior design, not at the end. To do that we had to produce a range like nothing else seen before and offer multiple coordinating options to allow immense choice and diversity for the customer and retailer. This is what we have done with Revelation,’ says Eamonn Prescott, Adam Carpets sales director. Revelation has eight colour
schemes, each comprising two plain twists, one stripe and one tonal. Centrepiece of the range is the tonal. It has been designed with four colours in each pattern. Two natural ground colours in velvet yarns, then two accent colours
in twist yarns, to create a textured tonal. ‘The accent colours have been chosen specifically to match in with today’s fashions and trends,’ says Prescott. Revelation offers the opportunity to have one plain on a landing, coordinating stripe on the stairs, second coordinating plain in a hall, then the matching tonal in the living or dining room, he adds. Also, the range can be linked to a retailer’s own fabrics and/or paints if they sell them. ‘The opportunity to make mood boards and link the carpets to fabrics and paints will appeal to many retailers. It is an interior designer’s dream. The sheer scale of what this range can do should excite retailers everywhere,’ reckons Prescott. Visit: www.adamcarpets.com

Reinforcing nature Kährs’ designs enhance natural properties Kährs’ latest Harmony Collection reflects the key trend for rustic natural surfaces with subtle design features. Hand-brushing removes pulpy softwood to expose natural graining and annual rings, which reinforces the natural look. It has 14 designs, including some that are bevelled and smoked to add further distinction. Each have a three-strip design to complement all interior styles. Pale toned colour options include Oak Frost and Oak Dew with a strong Scandinavian feel, on-trend grey toned Oak Limestone and the lightest floor, white Ash Alabaster, which also has a micro-bevel along all four sides. Mid-toned options include Oak Citrus, Granite, Stone and Ember, in shell pink, camel brown and golden tones. The darkest floors – Oak Smoke, Kernel, Bean, Soil, Moss and Lava – have a distinct rich tone, in earthy and nut brown shades, through to ebony. Visit: www.kahrs.co.uk

Modern take on tradition Skills developed over the decades are used in Velda’s latest collection For more than 50 years Velda has produced beds using traditional skills, and still continues to recruit apprentices to maintain these skills. The combination of this and modern technology is seen in its latest Multisense mattress collection, says Adrian Eyre, Velda UK sales agent. All six mattresses in the range have an Aegis anti-microbe or AegisPremium anti-microbe and moisture regulation treatment. Single or double layers of multi-low springs act like a second layer of fillings providing high levels of support while reducing pressure points. The seven-zoned pocket sprung core is available in standard and firmer comfort levels. Bases are in several formats: a boxspring base with full depth springs to provide support for the mattress, giving the bed a deeper more luxurious feel while reducing pressure on the mattress to aid its longevity and performance; adjustable slatted bases; and frames with slatted, pocket sprung or adjustable drop-in platforms. All bases have several options such as metal or wooden feet and choice of fabric. Multisense covers are elastic, double stretched jersey that adapt and shape to the body in the same way as the foam, memory foam or latex fillings. On some models the springs have inner tufting to provide the strength and securing of traditional tufting but with the comfort of a deep quilted cover without surface tufts. Springs are foam encapsulated to prevent rolling off. Latex or visco toppers and latex pillows are also available. Adjustable models offer a five-fold action with pillow lift and storage options. BEDS AND BEDROOM
Spoilt for choice Serene Furnishings has again expanded its bedroom offer Following a period of significant investment during 2012, in readiness for a succession of product launches this year, Serene Furnishings has been capturing the attention of retailers with its latest line up of beds and bedroom furniture. At the beginning of the year, Serene announced that 2013 would witness a string of innovative products and collections, coupled with an unprecedented expansion of the business. ‘This has most certainly been the case, with the company now offering its most diverse range to date, featuring unparalleled choice across a number of collections and material combinations. Key to the successful launch of the new designs and collections we are now seeing is the ability to service such growth in the business,’ says Tasleem Tasab, Serene founder and md. ‘Leaving no stone unturned, a middle management structure was put in place to take charge of key departments ensuring customer expectations are exceeded and our expansion plans met.’ Its warehouse facility has been expanded by 25% to provide 130,000sqft of storage to ensure high levels of stock and quick delivery on orders. The first wave of launches saw the Metal Collection for 2013 and the Precious Metals Collection being well received. Tasab says these are its most diverse metal bed offering to date with something for every retailer and consumer alike. ‘The new Metal Collection for 2013 offers more choice in size, finish and design. It is our largest metal range comprising metal beds, daybeds, folding beds, guest beds, headboards, kids’ beds and bunks. It complements the new and inspired Precious Metals Collection perfectly, which is a premium range of bedsteads presenting an eclectic revival of historic styles, aimed at the mid-upper end of the market and suited to both furniture and bed retailers alike,’ he explains. Now Serene has turned its attention to wood. ‘The beautiful new Oak Collection has harnessed the ever-present beauty of wood to present a design-led range of beds and drawers. Clearly evident on each piece is the unique grain detail of solid American white oak, with sharp lines and exquisite proportion
best presenting the dependable strengths of the wood itself. Different styles are seamlessly connected to suit a wide variety of bedrooms and a selection of bed sizes, each with a posture sprung slatted base,’ says Tasab. It is a collection centred around three key designs: Salisbury, Thornton and Windsor. The Salisbury offers tapered legs and clean lines, a choice of bed size and high or low footend. There are two bedside table options – single or three-drawer. Thornton has a subtle curve to the top rail, which combines with sharp vertical lines to create a striking headboard for the low footend bed. It is complemented by a two-drawer bedside table and is available in a selection of sizes. Windsor features a guest bed option that can be stowed away when not in use. Windsor also includes a two-drawer bedside table to complete the look. The Hevea Collection has also been expanded with Freya, a bedstead in all sizes from 3ft to 6ft, with a guest bed option, and choice of Honey Oak and Opal White finishes. As with the wider Hevea Collection, Freya is made using environmentfriendly Hevea wood from the brasiliensis tree, which is only felled for use in furniture production when it has reached the end of its natural rubber producing life. ‘We are continuing to try to set the pace in innovation and supporting the trade with a range of beds and bedroom furniture that spans the price points, offering something for every taste and bedroom. The new Metal and Precious Metal Collections, coupled with the arrival of the new Oak Collection, broadens the choice for retailer and consumer alike, breathing new life into shopfloors up and down the country,’ says Tasab. There will be new products galore as the leading bedding manufacturers gather at Telford. AJ Foam will show its latest products from its Pureflex, Neptune and Memory Sleep brands. Bodet and Horst’s Check Point fabric uses a hygiene sensor to signal when mattress and pillow covers need washing. Indicator particles integrated into the textile react to different contaminants such as dust mites, skin scales, bacteria, or bodily fluids. The colour of the Check Point fabric changes to give the user a signal that cleaning is necessary. After washing, the indicators return to their original colour. Best of both worlds gel foam and springs
Hybrid (above and below right) combines gel foam and springs
‘Memory foam is now so last century. It was invented in 1966 by NASA to improve aircraft seats and was used in the space programme. That’s nearly 50 years ago. Now, however, we’re in the 21st century and the next generation of bed technology is here: a union of extreme comfort with zonal support, pressure relief and immense breathability, everything combined to make you the ultimate, deeper sleeper,’ says Neil Robinson, Sealy marketing director. The new Hybrid beds are a fusion of a new, technologically advanced, highly elastic gel and breathable foam merged with innovative springs and will be debuted at the show.
The two stage design springs are individually encased

‘Unlike memory foam beds, these Hybrid divans and mattresses are springy, bouncy, deeply comfortable and supportive, as you would expect from the very best pocket sprung beds, but with the added benefit of an innovative cooling gel foam layer so no more bed head hair or hot and sweaty bodies which you frequently get with ordinary memory foam,’ he explains. ‘Memory foam beds also invariably mean no bounce factor, but with these new Hybrid beds of course this isn’t a problem, so as you snuggle down in ecstatic comfort, you go to sleep quicker and stay asleep longer.’ The top layer of breathable gel offers anatomically correct

support and hygienic protection with no sweating or shivering – the ideal sleeping climate. Under this are layers of almost 3,000 mini and full pocket springs, zoned to support the spine and heavier and lighter parts of the body along its length. The coil is a two stage design – the upper part of the spring is softer and conforming for contouring comfort, while the lower part of the spring is firmer for deep down support, and each spring is individually encased to minimise motion transfer. In addition to Smart Fibres, the collection’s ticking is a new type of flexible, stretchy soft mattress covering that contains Adaptive. Adaptive changes passive textiles to textiles with a
dynamic response to environmental changes such as temperature and humidity. It reuses the energy of the body to boost moisture wicking, moisture evaporation and cooling, to keep the sleeper and the mattress cool and dry. Adaptive treated mattress ticking works through sheets and/or mattress protectors as long as the textile layers have a good breathability. Also on show will be Napoli 1200, which gained the highest score in the latest test of pocket sprung mattresses by Which? Magazine, earning it a Which? Best Buy accolade. Visit: www.sealy.co.uk

Home grown Somnus is preparing to preview the Supremacy Collection and the luxury no-turn Concordia Collection at the show. ‘Handmade using nature’s finest materials, unique wool blends developed from the Somnus Farm and brand new spring technology, both collections deliver the very best in comfort. Somnus is at the forefront of pocket spring design technology and has designed each model with a higher number of springs giving a more supportive, comfortable sleeping surface,’ says Jason Lowdon, Somnus sales director. Somnus sleep specialists designed the Sensa iP Pocket spring system, where the springs move independently of each other, distributing the sleepers’ weight across a higher number of

springs and so supporting and contouring more exactly to body shape, he says. The result is fewer pressure points and better sleep. These unique springs are produced in the Somnus state of the art manufacturing facility. To help guarantee the quality of the materials, Somnus rears its own sheep on the Somnus Farm and has developed Yorkshire Dales and Herdwick Eco wool. These are turned into unique blends of 100% natural upholstery fillings which are then layered into each bed. ‘This makes for perfect temperature control all night and ensures supreme comfort,’ according to Lowdon. ‘We blend the most luxurious fillings such as silk, mohair, cashmere and the finest Egyptian cotton with the highest quality locally produced wool for breathability and with handteased horsehair to channel away moisture and maintain a healthy, fresh, well-ventilated bed.’ The Supremacy Collection will comprise 12 traditionally handbuilt models while the Concordia Collection will feature seven no-turn models. To complement the 2014 collections, Somnus has selected a fashion inspired range of fabrics – including opulent satins and crushed velvets – and headboard styles that add a touch of luxury and style to the bedroom. The latest innovations in sleep The Geltex Collection will be the centrepiece of Silentnight’s launches at the show. Developed by Recticel and available exclusively in the UK and Republic of Ireland through the Silentnight Group, Geltex is a combination of an extremely elastic gel and air-permeable foam. Its unique open cell structure allows air to pass easily through the mattress, preventing the body from overheating in summer, while keeping warm in winter. Its innovative elasticity offers immediate springback for support. It responds to the contours of the body providing spinal alignment and support. Geltex’s advanced flexible properties distribute weight evenly across the mattress preventing pressure points from building up, and helping to reduce the discomfort of aching joints and circulatory problems. There are six mattress options, each combining Silentnight’s Mirapocket spring system with a Geltex comfort layer and Geltex branded knitted mattress cover. New base options include a contemporary slender leg base, and standard and low level adjustable bases. Divan and ottoman bases are also available. A new hand-upholstered five panel padded headboard complements the contemporary collection. Headboards and bases come in Pale Grey, Malt, Fennel, Aubergine and Millstone. The launch to retailers is supported with POS displays, including dual-branded backboard, floor vinyls, footmats and a printed display panel with integrated TV monitor hosting a Geltex video. ‘The Geltex Collection is our most exciting and innovative product development,’ says Steve Freeman, Silentnight md. ‘The range has been developed to offer customers the ultimate sleep
The collection is backed by extensive POS
experience. We know that sleep is such a crucial part of everyday life and makes a huge difference to our health, happiness and wellbeing. As such customers are demanding more and more from their bed to help support healthy sleep patterns and create maximum comfort. ‘The Geltex Collection has been developed on the three core principles that aid a great night’s sleep – breathability, body support and pressure relief. A Geltex comfort layer, combined with our market-leading Mirapocket system, offers the perfect solution to these factors, creating a sleep environment which has never been seen before.’ Visit: www.silentnight.co.uk
Classics has been updated
The 1200 Classic Pocket Luxury
The Classics collection has been upgraded with pocket spring mattresses. The 1200 Classic Pocket Luxury, 1000 Classic Memory and 800 Classic Pocket models offer features including memory foam, Purotex probiotics to help allergy sufferers and ensure the mattress remains hygienically clean, and Ecofibres to prevent overheating. To complement the mattresses, the sprung divan bases have been upgraded. Display models feature half sprung and half solid top divan bases allowing consumers to choose the firmness and support they prefer.
The latest ottoman storage option sees the front half of the bed lift up to offer discreet underbed storage, while two pullout drawers provide additional storage capacity. Also being expanded is the Diamond collection with the 4000 pocket model. Which? Magazine recently tested Silentnight’s 3 Zone Memory Foam Rolled Mattress describing it as its number one Best Buy in the memory foam mattress category and ‘an absolute bargain’. The Silentnight Diamond 1400 Natural Luxury was also featured as a recommendation within the best pocket mattress category.

For more than140 years, Airsprung Beds has been manufacturing divans and mattresses in Wiltshire and has become one of the best-known brands in the business. Airsprung is offering retailers short lead times on all its models, as well as next day delivery on its bestselling rolled mattresses and wooden bed frames – a no nonsense approach for retailers looking for swift, trouble-free sales. Many retailers are also taking advantage of Airsprung’s DHD service, eliminating any worries about stock and warehousing and helping streamline the retailer’s own business model in favour of increased sales. This year Airsprung is further extending its core range that was launched at the end of last year. The company will also be expanding its Hush from Airsprung beds and mattress collection, aimed at the mid-sector consumer, at the show. Rest Assured will debut the Heritage Collection, designed to be a traditional, affordable, luxury bed range exclusively for independent retailers. British heritage is central to the collection: the mattresses are hand-tufted for long-lasting support and embroidered for a traditional look. The selfcleaning mattress covers eliminate mould and dust mites without the use of harsh chemicals, handles are fitted for easy movement while air vents allow air to circulate freely. The range features four models: Farnham Silk 800, Helmsley Cashmere 1400, Portland Memory 2000 and Sherbourne Latex 2000. There are four upholstered headboards and an extensive collection of bases in a choice of natural, rustic linens. Bases include electronic adjustables and sprung bases as well as an extensive selection of storage options including the new Ottoman drawer. ‘Made using tried and tested techniques, the collection has been specifically designed to allow for easy movement and optimum back support. to ensure that you wake up relaxed and refreshed,’ says Graham Butterfield, Rest Assured sales director. Heritage is supported by POS designed to appeal to Rest Assured’s 45-plus, female target consumer, specifically empty nesters and downsizers who the company has identified as likely to be in the market for a new bed. The POS maximises standout in-store and communicates the collection’s key message: ‘Rest assured it’s the bed your back would choose’. The statement is supported with explanations of how and why the bed is the best choice for your back. Customers are further reassured: ‘Rest assured our beds have been tried and tested’ – a message that is of particular importance to the target consumers. The Heritage Collection has been tried and tested to provide features that support the back and body contours, with added luxury and traditional style which appeals to buyers in the 45-plus age range. ‘Rest Assured beds have a reputation for high repeat ratio and we are confident that the Heritage Collection will be no exception,’ Butterfield says. Spotlight on handmade quality ‘Gainsborough Beds has a history of making and supplying beds of the very highest quality and this year will be no exception,’ says Andy Richards, Gainsborough sales and marketing director. ‘We want to use the exhibition to showcase what is really great about our company.’ The show will see Gainsborough display a new collection of handmade beds. ‘The Natural collection features natural fillings of the highest quality. To complement these beautiful mattresses there will be a fresh range of base fabrics featuring the latest colours while retaining the commerciality that retailers require,’ he explains. Gainsborough’s recently launched Pocket Cloud Collection will also be on show, incorporating layers of upholstery and nested pocket spring counts of up to 3,000, together with two rows of hand side-stitching. ‘We had a preview of this range to some potential and existing customers and the response was amazing, with uptake

Multiple choices for small spaces Retailers need to make the most of floorspace, so Hush-a-Bye Beds has developed the Options range that offers a large amount of choice from only two floor models. There are two spring interior options and two different tensions, along with multiple base options including deep or shallow and sprung or platform top, a range of base fabrics and a guest bed option. ‘We are acutely aware of the fact that retailers’ floorspace is at a premium and we hear so many times buyers saying that they don’t have elastic walls, that we believe we have arrived at a solution that meets so many of their demands,’ says Andy Richards, Hush-a-Bye sales and marketing director. In addition to Options, Hush-a-Bye will launch a budget line under the Dreamnight brand that will offer retailers a collection to complement the current Hush-a-Bye offering with a lower price point. Initially, predominantly an open coil offering, it will allow for a choice of base fabric colours and be aimed at

consumers who want the assurance of knowing they are purchasing from a well-established company but are working to a budget. Four Dreamnight models will be on display at the show including a guest bed. There are also new models in the Hush-a-Bye offer, including a block memory foam mattress and two pocket spring models. ‘As a bricks and mortar manufacturer, we are committed to working with retailers who have stores rather than just websites and this allows stockists to sell with confidence,’ says Richards. ‘There genuinely will be something for everyone on display at the show, with the new budget range offering some fabulous beds at a very competitive price. As an extra incentive this year, one retailer will win back the value of their floor model order, which gives us the opportunity to give something back to one of our stockists.’ Visit: www.hushabyebeds.co.uk

Regal launches Hot on the heels of exhibiting at the Coronation Festival at Buckingham Palace, Hypnos is launching the Royal Comfort Collection and next generation Heritage Collection at The Bed Show. A flavour of the new products were on display at Buckingham Palace. James Keen, Hypnos sales director, discussed Hypnos’ unique Active Turns pocket spring comfort and sustainable design ethos with members of the Royal family, including the Prince of Wales who was particularly interested in Hypnos’ environmental and responsible values. ‘We have added to our BS PAS 2060 Carbon Neutral status with the workshops not only achieving FSC and PEFC certification, but earning an international Ethical accreditation from Sedex which serves to provide retailers with the confidence that Hypnos employs ethical and responsible best practices. Much has happened in the past year and we have continued to grow sales by over 30%, with new products and new levels of comfort and aesthetics at the heart of this growth,’ says Keen. Products introduced during the year focused on an innovative approach to pocket spring geometry with Intuitive Active Turns which focused on one intelligent layer of pocket springs to maximise cool-comfort and pressure relieving support. Hypnos also launched the Pillow Turn Collection, boasting a removable zipped topper connected to a turnable mattress core. Other introductions included the contemporary no-turn Pocket Latex collection which provides pressure relief and cooler comfort compared with foam based mattresses, says Keen. A bedstead mattress collection and a wider choice of finishing touches including a contemporary shallow divan with stand-out legs and the addition of an upholstered footboard. Decorex has a new home Kit Kemp is among the line-up of international designers who will be creating memorable features at this year’s Decorex International as it makes its debut at Perks Field & The Orangery, Kensington Palace. The historic site of Kensington Palace inspired the theme of this year’s show, the Silk Route, when silks, porcelain and other luxury goods were introduced to Europe. This theme will be used as a starting point by Kemp, who designed the main entrance to Decorex. Of her design, Kemp says: ‘Our trader of spices and glittering silks arrives back to his hideaway on a rainy autumn London day. His cloak and hat hang, and his bedroom is a treasure chest of souvenirs from his travels to market places in the Orient. The spice colours of the East and the dappled light of an early autumn day create a glowing scene. The chandelier of a glittering galleon above the bed reminds him of travels of the past and those to come in the future.’ Here are some of the highlights. Visit: www.decorex.com

Some 70 women whose partners are professional sportsmen, primarily in the rugby Super League, took part in the July event to climb Ben Nevis in temperatures up to 38°C. Bond It backed a team whose partners play for rugby league club Huddersfield Giants, which it sponsors. ‘The high temperatures on the day added to the challenge but all the girls put in a fantastic effort, completing the ascent and descent in a little over five hours. We all felt a real sense of achievement afterwards
and especially given the walk was for such a worthwhile cause,’ says Jenna Brough, who helped organise the event. ‘We were only too happy to back some of the players’ partners in their fundraising efforts for Life for a Kid and even more so once we learnt about the charity’s nature and focus,’ says David Moore, Bond It md. So far, some £20,000 has been raised by the ladies for Life for a Kid, which aims to help children with disabilities and serious illnesses. The charity provides equipment, educational opportunities, financial support and respite care. Much of the money raised will be used by the charity towards the construction of a new centre.
