New year, same issues
If the retail sector is to flourish, a historic deadlock must be broken or entrants will be few and far between
As we enter a new year, many of the issues facing the industry remain stubbornly familiar. While there are always going to be things that affect business that are outwith the direct control of governments or groupings of governments, let alone industries and companies – such as the global economy, extended shipping times caused by armed conflicts and higher energy bills as a result of invasion – there are some that could and should be resolved at a more local level.
For retailers, the largest ongoing pain must still be business rates. Retail and hospitality pay a combined bill of almost £9bn – 34% of the entire UK Government take from the charge, which will rise to £11bn next April: 44% of the business rates bill.
Shoppers, so we are told, want a greater diversity of shops they can easily reach, ie on the high street or nearby. But they won’t be getting these anytime soon as potential retailers can’t afford the costs, and shoppers cannot afford to park anywhere near where the shops are. Local authorities face the same issue that the UK Government does on finding solutions: they can’t afford it. Both councils and central government have long talked about regenerating town centres, both for employment and community reasons, but nothing seems to change.
Governments of all shades have promised to reform business rates – surely the simplest way to restore our high streets – but when they look at the numbers, plans are quietly dropped as no-one has been able to work out how to charge a different mix of businesses while bringing in the same level of funds and not causing the wrong sort of headlines. Until this is fixed, margins for most retailers will continue to loiter in the low single-digits.
The new year also brings a new round of exhibitions, although this year’s will be less populated than in recent times, with no Domotex or imm Cologne. Heimtextil, Top Drawer, INDX, JFS and Maison will draw January visitors, and Salone is already full for April, so there is still plenty of opportunity to see new products this month.

Sofology trio depart after management reshuffle
Three of Sofology’s senior executives have left the upholstery chain as part of a shake-up by parent DFS Group.
Emma Dinnis, Sofology md left at the end of December as part of the move to create a ‘more simplified structure’. Dinnis joined the chain in January 2022, after roles at M&Co, Ikea, Arcadia Group and Marks & Spencer. She was the chain’s third md or chief executive in four years.
Group management has been ‘simplified’
As part of the restructuring Nick Smith, DFS chief executive has taken up the new position of group chief customer and commercial officer, adding leadership of Sofology to his existing responsibilities.
Deflation returns
Retail price deflation returned to the furniture and flooring sectors in November.
After October saw the first annual inflation (0.5%) for 10 months, November saw deflation of 0.5% for household furniture, according to ONS data.
Garden furniture continued its nine-month journey of deflation (and eight consecutive months of double-digit decreases) from 11.4% to 12.6%. Lighting also saw deflation continue, from 2.3% to 3.9%. For furnishing fabrics and curtains it rose from 2.7% to 3.3%.
After inflation of 0.1% in October, November saw deflation of 2.5% for flooring. After at least 10 months of inflation, carpets and rugs saw deflation of 2.9%. For smooths, the position was reversed: with inflation (0.2%) for the first time since November 2023.
Adam Smith, Sofology director of customer operations and Jan Duckworth, Sofology brand director have also left.
Arron Burton, DFS commercial director is the new group commercial director; James Brewer, DFS marketing director is group marketing director, and Graham Mould, DFS operations director has become group customer operations director.
DFS said these roles will join the already established group leaders of HR, IT, finance and distribution ‘to bolster a vastly experienced group operations leadership team’.
‘By bringing DFS and Sofology together under one management team we will create a more simplified structure, enabling us to focus on our strategic priorities, fully unlock group efficiencies, and create a stronger business for the future. I would like to thank Emma, Adam and Jan for their important contribution to making Sofology what it is today, and wish them all the best for the future,’ says Tim Stacey, DFS Group chief executive.
Headlam sees decline slow
Headlam has seen the decline in UK sales slow in the second half of the year but expects to repeat its first half underlying pre-tax loss.
‘The group’s revenue decline has slowed in the second half to date despite the lack of market improvement. Group revenue for the five months to the end of November declined
7.3% compared to an 11.8% decline in H1. This lower level of revenue decline in H2 has principally been driven by revenue from larger customers, in particular resulting from Carpetright exiting the market. This helped to reduce the decline in UK revenue from 11.3% in H1 to 6.6% in the five months to the end of November,’
says the group. Chris Payne, Headlam ceo had better news for shareholders, expecting the plan to raise £70m through property disposals and boosting profits by £20m through the uniting of its distribution network under the Mercado banner to come to fruition sooner than expected.
JL’s style hits of 2024
Shoppers embraced comfort, luxury and vintage maximalism in 2024, according to John Lewis.
The department store’s annual ‘How We Shop, Live and Look’ report shows that demand for silk bedding rose by a third, while sales of quilted throws climbed 30%.
The real 1980s comeback was the curtain tieback: sales more than doubled (+108%).
The other accessory trend was the simplest of all patterns: the stripe. Sales of striped products were up 37%, from curtains and cushions to vases and lampshades.
Retro rarely goes out of fashion: sales of Ercol furniture went up 52% and searches for G Plan vintage sofas rose 600% in 2024. In contrast, sales of home office chairs were down 24%.
JYSK sees UK and Ireland turnover reach E120m
JYSK saw sales in the UK and Ireland enjoy a double-digit increase in its past financial year.
Sales grew by 13.2% to €120m (£99.8m), as it invested in store openings and lowering prices.
Customer numbers climbed by 400,000 to almost 2.5million as it opened five branches: the newest Dublin store at Liffey Valley has immediately reached the highest footfall levels seen by the chain in Ireland.
Indoor furniture, homewares and textiles were the standout categories for sales growth. Sleepware also saw increases.
‘I’m very pleased with the increased customer growth achieved during FY24, which clearly shows that our proposition and offering continues to appeal to new
customers in both markets. Although global uncertainties and unrest continued during the financial year 2023/24 (FY24), we invested in lowering our already competitive prices on over half of our popular quality products and included even more products in our popular “Everyday Low Price” assortment. This resulted in significant increase in the number of units sold,’ says Roni Tuominen, JYSK UK and Ireland country director.
The focus of expansion now turns to Ireland, with eight branches planned for the current financial year. This has seen the chain invest in a ‘dark store’ warehouse in Dublin, which will also support online growth.
MS Galleon renews calls for change
Topps Tiles’ largest shareholder has reignited its row with the flooring and wall tile chain.
MS Galleon, which owns 29.9% of the chain, has demanded an overhaul of its leadership and strategy after what it describes as ‘costly blunders’.
Piotr Lipko, MS Galleon md complained that the £9m purchase of failed rival CTD Tiles was ‘unequivocally irrational’ and ‘highly
detrimental’. Topps Tiles is ‘nowhere near being “a truly omnichannel” business,’ he
said, and management was not listening to its concerns.
‘This lack of vision and strategy to transform into a modern, omnichannel, onlinedriven business is largely the reason for the current poor state of the business.’.
MS Galleon tried to oust previous chairman Darren Shapland after the chain refused to switch its product sourcing to MS Galleon’s subsidiaries.
Recofloor joins Resource Futures roster
Waste vinyl recycling scheme Recofloor has a new management.
Set up in 2009 as part of a WRAP pilot project, and previously managed by Axion Group, Recofloor is funded by Altro and Polyflor to collect and recycle waste vinyl flooring throughout the UK.
Having established roots in the flooring industry, Recofloor has now joined B Corprecognised Resource Futures’ roster of community-focused sustainability programmes.
Recofloor has collected 62,800 rolls of vinyl flooring –the equivalent of 341 football pitches – since its launch.
‘Businesses regularly face the same sustainability challenges as competitors and often the best way to make a difference is to come together to tackle these issues,’ says Bethan Jones, Resource Futures director. ‘We welcome this initiative as a key programme tackling waste challenges.’
Leeke

Emma Leeke, Leekes md has joined the board of the BFA as it looks to widen its representation across the furniture industry.
‘I am delighted to accept the invitation to join the board of the British Furniture Association, with a brief of representing the interests of British furniture retailers. With a variety of challenges facing the sector currently, I’m looking forward to working with the board to continue to raise the profile of our industry and lobby on its behalf,’ says Leeke.
‘Emma’s appointment shows our commitment to be representative of furniture retailers as well as suppliers and manufacturers,’ says Phil Spademan, BFA md.

Reid hopes for sustainability push as Simba joins FMC
Steve Reid, Simba Sleep ceo says he hopes the mattress retailer and producer’s admission to The Furniture Makers’ Company will see fellow bed companies come together ‘to champion sustainability initiatives that have never been more time critical’.
‘We have developed nothing but respect for the industry we entered when we diversified into mattress design and manufacture back in 2016. Our business model has been borne out successfully, but we know that success has only come from the daily interactions, support and wider network within the furnishing sector. It’s a special sector, and nothing speaks to that more than The Furniture Makers’ Company. This is a membership, and a responsibility, that we take very seriously and we are honoured to become part of this historic institution. We are excited to be involved and to broaden our network, share our own learnings and develop and build on what has already been achieved at The Furniture Makers’ Company for years to come.
‘Sleep is a sector that we as a business and individuals have enormous passion for, and membership of The Furniture Makers’ Company, and contributing to encouraging more young people to join the mattress and sleep sector, is something we hope can keep the health benefits of a good night’s sleep at the forefront for generations to come. We see ourselves as forward thinkers in sustainability and along
with like-minded members at The Furniture Makers’ Company, we believe the collective is more powerful than the individual. We hope that we can use our combined voices to champion sustainability initiatives that have never been more time critical.’

HSL looks to new format for disruption
Motion upholstery and bed retailer and manufacturer
HSL will ‘disrupt the industry’ with its new store format, it says, ‘making it easy for consumers to find great quality furniture that balances comfort and functionality with modern styling’.
The first Livhome store opened on the Racecourse Retail Park, Aintree over the festive period. As well as in-house designed upholstery and beds, it will feature ranges from Guiseppe Nicoletti, himolla, Hypnos, Harrison Spinks and Stressless. It will also stock the full Carpe Diem bed range, the only store outside London to do so.
‘Over time, both product
design and service in the furniture market have become mundane, mediocre and confusing for customers, who are increasingly concerned about making
mistakes with high value purchases. We know good furniture and aim to provide a fresh approach for design-orientated consumers looking for furniture and lifestyle products that make them feel as good as they look. Setting new standards for quality and style and delivering exceptional customer service, we are confident that consumers will appreciate the collection and enjoy the browsing experience in the showroom,’ says Leanne Eastwood, HSL commercial director.

For the future
Porada is continuing to replant its forest
Porada’s commitment to environmental sustainability continues, particularly in relation to the company-owned forests in Burgundy, France.
Since 2011, Porada has pursued a strategy of investment in the French land to guarantee a sustainable and certified supply of ash wood for the production of its furniture. This ensures supervision
of the wood management and procurement phases, while reducing the environmental impact of purchasing raw materials from external suppliers.
Over the years, the forest’s surface area has increased to 260 hectares (just over a square mile) located in several municipalities of Burgundy: Vitry Laché, Saint-Aubin-des-Chaumes, Devay, Thaix and Rémilly, in the Nièvre department.
For Porada, the forest is not only an area destined for timber production but also an ecosystem to be preserved in compliance with the laws and regulations set by the French government, which include biodiversity monitoring (the forests do not only contain ash trees but also oak and cherry, among others), soil protection and water conservation. All these regulations aim to protect the national environmental heritage.
The latest investment saw 10 hectares re-planted with 8,000 saplings. The young trees will be closely monitored during their development, and only about 600 trees per hectare are expected to reach full maturity, to ensure proper growth and high wood quality in the long term.
This first replanting phase will be followed by others over the next few years, with the aim of constantly supporting the wellbeing of the Porada Forest.
‘Neither I nor the next Porada generation will ever see the full maturity of these new plants,’ says Tiziano Allievi, Porada md. ‘It is our legacy to future generations, who will thus know that our thoughts today are also with them.’

The hot tub challenge Richard Renouf
Experts are facing being side by side in the witness box
Experts don’t always agree. What happens when opinions clash? Twice recently I’ve had serious disagreements with other experts, and although in both cases I was not able to speak to the other expert directly, questions and further comments were needed to help the parties decide which opinion they would favour.
It’s perfectly reasonable to question an expert’s report, and when you have two conflicting reports, each expert should be offered to chance to consider the comments of the other.
A highly patterned contract carpet had been installed and the hoteliers were not happy that the seams didn’t match. The first expert stated that a pattern match was impossible and that this
must be due to a manufacturing fault. I said it needed nothing more than for the carpets to have been trimmed by 3cm-4cm at most on each seam and so this was an installation fault. The judge asked both of us to respond with further comments. I simply took all the photographs of the seams from the other expert’s report, cut them along the seam and then moved the pieces to find the pattern match position. The judge accepted that the use of the word ‘impossible’ was clearly incorrect and the case fell in favour of the hoteliers.
It’s also perfectly reasonable to seek a second opinion if you think there may be a problem with a report. I was sent the report of another expert, together
‘Hot-tubbing’ conjures up a picture but not necessarily the right one
with their photographs. It was easy to see that the subfloor had not been prepared properly and so the smoothing compound was not bonded to the subfloor screed. If you’re technically minded, this was an anhydrite screed and it had not had the laitance –a powdery surface film that prevents adhesion – ground off. The first expert had not even identified what the subfloor was and had simply looked at the underside of some tiles that had peeled up. They had concluded there was no visible primer and so this must have been the cause of the problem. I was able to point out some of the reasons for my different opinion so the parties could reconsider the matter.
If a disagreement between experts happens as part of a court claim process, it is now sometimes the case that the judge will ask both experts to attend the hearing and put them in the witness box side by side so they can give their opinions and supporting evidence at the same time. This procedure has been nicknamed ‘hot-tubbing’, but I’m not sure that conjures up a healthy picture of what it really means.
Sadly, some experts’ reports are questioned by customers because they are done by people who are not independent and who may have a vested interest in the issue: perhaps they work for a company with ties to the retailer or manufacturer, or perhaps they are paid to resolve issues with on-site repairs and so want this to be the outcome. However knowledgeable they may be, customers find their opinions hard to accept if they’re not backed up with clear supporting information.

SOPHIE ROBINSON X DUNELM
‘We’re thrilled to introduce Dunelm’s first collaboration with Sophie Robinson, the undisputed queen of colour,’ says Drake.
‘My mission is to make colour and pattern easier for people. With Dunelm, I’ve put together a collection that gives people choice while knowing it’s been tightly curated, so it will all work together. I want to give people the confidence to be creative, experimental and playful in their own home. Dunelm is the perfect partner for this collection, because its teams have expertise in textiles, home accessories, lighting and loads more. I love that people can see the collection in stores and online: it makes it really accessible,’ says Robinson.

11 ‘When it comes to colour, I think people need to listen to their gut and their heart. Pattern protagonist
Illulian has taken Simone Guidarelli’s design for its latest rug
Nature explodes in a riot of plants, flowers and animals in the Exotic Jungle pattern, Illulian’s latest rug, based on the design by Simone Guidarelli. The brand has succeeded in weaving the colours and micro-details that characterise this lush pattern inspired by the designer’s love of nature.
The result is a rug with a romantic allure, capable of capturing the essence of tropical exoticism through a unique reinterpretation. In this timeless idyllic world, little monkeys climb up plants to steal their blossoms and fruits, while anemones become the bearers of an intense but delicate emotion. Symbols, stories and images from distant worlds come together to create a pattern in which decoration is the protagonist.
Exotic Jungle is knotted and carded by hand in Nepal and uses vegetable dyes to create its vivid colours. It is available in two qualities: Platinum 120 and Gold 100. Platinum 120, Illulian’s most exclusive line, is characterised by the use of Himalayan wool from chenylok sheep and natural silk or pure cocoon silk with 180,000 knots per sqm. Gold 100 combines wool and silk with a density of 152,000 knots per sqm. Visit: www.illulian.com

Stilnovo is available in eight species, seven plank sizes and six finishes
Stilnovo is a two-layer wood floor collection, designed to offer versatility in every space. This line is available in eight different wood species and several finishes, allowing for a wide range of combinations to meet both aesthetic and functional needs. The collection is offered in seven plank sizes: 70mm, 90mm, 120mm, 140mm, 180mm, 240mm and 300mm.
Finishes include the pre-sanded version, where the surface of the planks is only smoothed but not treated, making it perfectly smooth for any finishing treatment desired to be applied on-site, to the Oiled finish, in which the surface of the planks is impregnated with neutral oil, preserving the beauty of the wood.
Additionally, there is the Varnished UV finish, an acrylic coating providing an excellent balance between brightness and naturalness. The Natural UV finish offers a tough, invisible protection, with a surface that feels soft to the touch and appears extremely matte and natural, like raw wood. The Natural UV finish is eco-friendly and aesthetically as natural as oil, but with the significant advantage of easy
maintenance. It is the world’s first varnish that allows localised repairs.
The Traffic UV finish is the most commonly used on high-traffic surfaces. It is perfectly smooth and transparent, allowing the natural beauty of the wood to stand out while providing protection and facilitating cleaning.
The new Raw UV finish represents the maximum naturalness achievable,
created to better appreciate the natural colours of each wood species.
Stilnovo offers eight wood species: Oak, offered in three variations – Stilnovo Oak, Stilnovo Smoked Oak Medium, and Stilnovo Smoked Oak Dark; Stilnovo Iroko; Stilnovo Doussiè; Stilnovo Cabreuva; Stilnovo Afrormosia; Stilnovo American Walnut; Stilnovo Teak; and Stilnovo Wenge. Visit: www.stile.com

Furniture, accessories, textiles and wall decor debuts are coming
Gallery Direct will introduce furniture designs from its SS25 collection this month, followed by accessories, textiles and wall decor in February.
‘We are really proud of the SS25 Collection which features more than 100 furniture lines, with extensions to some of our popular ranges, along with an amazing selection of new lines, including a new living, dining and bedroom collection. These will launch this month,’ says James Hudson, Gallery Direct commercial director.
Among the range extensions are the Artisan, Hatfield, Iowa, Madrid and Vancouver collections, as well as some of the occasional table and seating ranges. Vancouver has been extended to include bedroom furniture, with all of the sophisticated rustic-look pieces featuring storage – even the wooden bedstead has two large drawers. Clever
use of a mill saw gives the characteristic features of cross-sawn timber to create a dramatic and tactile finish.
Hatfield, offering retro styling with a contemporary touch, sees two new bedsteads and a selection of bedroom furniture in a natural finish, along with occasional pieces in a choice of natural or smoked finishes.
New models cover living, dining and bedroom furniture, along with sofas, chairs and upholstered bedsteads. Korsa’s dining, coffee and side tables are crafted from oak with cross-over legs. The Acera sofa features a cylindrical back which echoes the turned wooden legs, with cream fabric complementing the natural finish of the wood.
Buyers can see many of the new designs at Spring Fair, where Gallery Direct will be exhibiting in Halls 7 and 8. Visit: www.gallerydirect.co.uk

Highlighting where to buy – and where not to – remains a vital role
‘We seem to have been saying it almost every year since the 2008 financial crash, but the past year was another tough year for the UK bed industry. That’s not to say there wasn’t any good news or success stories of businesses bucking the trend,’ says Simon Williams, National Bed Federation head of marketing and membership.
‘At the NBF, we staged one of the most successful Bed Shows in our history, with the halls sold out, business brisk and a capacity audience enjoying a showbizstyle Gala Dinner and Bed Industry Awards. We should all be very proud of the showpiece event for our sector, which is established as the must-attend event for anyone involved in beds. Make a note in your diary for this year’s Bed Show, which will be on 23-24 September.
‘We continue to work on raising awareness of reasons to buy NBF Approved brands – directed at retailers and consumers. A sign of the cost-ofliving crisis is the plethora of unknown
for the NBF
and often untraceable bed and mattress brands targeting unsuspecting consumers with almost too good to be true offers via Facebook and other social media, as well as the continuing scourge of back of the van mattress traders. This activity harms the reputation of the UK bed sector’s reputable retailers and manufacturers, giving the impression that you can buy a high specification product at a fraction of the price.
‘So, what is the NBF doing about it?’ we get asked by retailers and members. Through our Due Diligence Random Testing Programme, we purchase both member and non-member products and carry out flammability testing at a UKAS accredited laboratory. We then cut them open to check for trade description discrepancies. Of course, we would love to have a large budget for an extensive advertising and awareness campaign to highlight this to consumers. However, all results are shared with West Yorkshire Trading Standards, our primary authority partner, which then acts on our findings, carrying out its own investigations, often visiting manufacturing sites to provide expert advice or, if necessary, begin legal proceedings against the business.
‘Via our consumer-facing Bed Advice UK platform, we’ll be targeting potential bed buyers through a carefully planned social media campaign in 2025, extolling the benefits of buying NBF Approved brands from reputable retailers and
highlighting the dangers of not doing so. To develop closer links with bed retailers who support NBF brands and our aims and objectives, we are launching a new fee-paying tier of NBF Retail Champions. Those who choose to sign up will receive a comprehensive range of tangible benefits for their business, with details to be announced soon.’
The NBF will continue placing sustainability at the heart of its work, with a focus on helping members navigate challenges and opportunities. It is committed to supporting members in designing more sustainable products and adapting to new expectations. This includes providing practical tools, guidance and resources to make sustainability achievable for all, regardless of company size or starting point.
‘We’ll be keeping members informed about developments in regulations, such as the potential impact of digital product passports and the introduction of new legislation in Europe, as well as exploring ways to prepare for changes in advance. We will continue to promote the use of our ecodesign principles and toolkit and bring as many members as possible on to a more sustainable footing through our Pledge for Our Planet. By encouraging collaboration, sharing best practices and hopefully inspiring our members to do more than the bare minimum, we aim to make sustainability a shared success across the bedding sector.’ Visit: www.bedfed.org.uk
Wellbeing focus
The right mattress plays a crucial role in optimising sleep
As the new year gets underway with its associated resolutions, many people are focusing on improving their health and wellbeing. One of the most important, yet often overlooked, pillars of health is quality sleep. Research consistently shows that sleep is vital for immune system support, recovery and overall wellbeing and finding the right mattress plays a crucial role in optimising sleep.
As an expert manufacturer in the healthcare industry, GNG supplies more than 70,000 units to the NHS a year. In 2023, it brought the same medically proven technology used in its healthcare products to the retail market with the innovative KomfiMed collection. This features medically proven foam, a castellated foam designed to reduce pressure points and improve weight distribution across the mattress. Combined with cooling TrueGel and sustainable Ecofoam, the result is a range of advanced mattresses that provide excellent pressure relief, spinal alignment and temperature regulation.
The KomfiMed collection was welcomed by retailers and was a finalist for Product of the Year at the 2023 Bed Industry Awards. In 2024, the collection was enhanced with the introduction of a luxurious quilted cover, offering a soft, breathable surface.
Building on the success of KomfiMed, GNG launched the GelMed mattress
collection in 2024. GelMed takes pressure relief and comfort to the next level by featuring responsive pocket spring technology, along with layers of TrueGel, Ecofoam and medically proven foam. The pocket springs provide a supportive sleep surface that conforms to the body’s contours, while the cooling TrueGel helps regulate body temperature for a peaceful night’s sleep. The result is superior comfort, spinal alignment and the reduction of pressure points: key elements for optimising sleep quality.

The good fight
Hypnos has partnered with Barnardo’s to help combat sleep poverty
Through its Legacy Origins collection, British bedmaker Hypnos is partnering with children’s charity Barnardo’s to combat sleep poverty for children.
With more than one in four children living in poverty, the UK is experiencing a crisis in child welfare. According to Barnardo’s No crib for a bed: the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on bed poverty report published in 2023, in more than a million families, parents give up their own bed so their children have somewhere to sleep, and in over 680,000 families, children have to share a bed. It’s a situation that Hypnos wants to help change and why it has partnered with the children’s charity.
Hypnos will make a donation from the wholesale proceeds of every mattress from the Legacy Origins collection to help fight bed poverty for UK families, and build a lasting legacy of improved sleep for the country’s poorest children.
The collection pays tribute to Hypnos’ 120 years of British bedmaking, blending traditional craftmanship and ethical materials with contemporary comfort and style. Composed of six hand-crafted mattresses, it uses ethically and responsibly sourced materials, including traceable fibres such as Responsible Wool Standard-certified British wool, natural Talalay latex, Himalayan allo, kapok and cotton, and Adaptiv comfort springs. The ReActivePro pocket spring mattresses all feature a
chemical-free signature Belgian damask, Triple Edge Protection and three rows of hand side-stitching.
‘The Legacy Origins III, one of the company’s bestselling mattresses, is approved by the Good Housekeeping Institute and represents a highly marketable proposition for Hypnos retailers that can only be strengthened by the partnership with Barnardo’s. Retailers will also be able to play an active role and promote the campaign in-store with a range of POS and marketing materials that highlight the need to solve this crisis in sleep poverty,’ says David Baldry, Hypnos md.
‘The effects of bed poverty on our young people are profound, with 20% of children feeling tired during school and 10% embarrassed by their sleeping arrangements. Others reported feeling unhappy, moody and anxious. In short, inadequate sleeping arrangements impact health and wellbeing. Currently, more than 600,000 children do not have a bed of their own.”
The partnership with Barnardo’s, announced at the Bed Show, is thanks to Hypnos’ Project Zero initiative, which looks into ways for Hypnos to create lasting, positive change.
‘This year’s Project Zero highlighted a crisis that has an extraordinarily damaging effect on families, affecting the physical and mental health of our young people. That’s why we are keen
to partner Barnardo’s. It’s a cause that really resonated, as ensuring a good night’s sleep for everyone is at the heart of Hypnos. Combating sleep poverty is something that we can all really get behind as an industry. That’s why we’ve decided to expand our zero sleep hours lost mission with Barnardo’s to every mattress in our Legacy Origins collection. With the strong sales that the collection enjoys, we believe this is the best way we can make a considerable difference and leave a lasting legacy for the UK’s children,’ says Baldry.
To kick off its partnership with Barnardo’s, Hypnos is initially donating 200 beds to the charity across the UK over the course of 2025.
‘Hypnos is very proud to partner Barnardo’s and young people to give them the best possible start to a positive future,’ says Baldry.

Dynamic times
Breasley has invested in new products and manufacturing to meet growing demand for its mattresses and pillows
2024 proved to be a pivotal year for Breasley. It began the year with the full launch of the revised UNO Sleep collection and made significant progress in developing the new Salus Luxury Wellbeing offer.
This year promises to be just as dynamic with the official launch of Salus Luxury Wellbeing following the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the Bed Show in September. This luxurious collection features three meticulously designed mattresses: Monteverde 8,000, Daintree 10,000, and Sequoia 12,000.
Each mattress in this collection boasts: a generously quilted layer of premium wool for natural comfort and temperature regulation; Salus PlushFlex and GelFlex layers, delivering comfort and plushness; responsive support layers that adapt to movement, providing tailored support, and mini and full-height spring systems for enhanced durability and support.
This collection is a significant step forward for Breasley, offering both new and existing customers an elevated product range that the company is confident will delight end-users.
The UNO Sleep Collection has three new products in development for the premium Exclusive Collection. These additions are the result of valuable
feedback from focus groups, and Breasley anticipates they will make a strong impression as it continues to evolve the UNO brand.
Beyond its branded product portfolio, the company has been focusing on enhancing its manufacturing capabilities. Investment in new machinery for in-house mattress and pillow production has allowed it to increase its output to meet
growing demand and broaden its product portfolio with unique profiling capabilities for its OEM customer base.
Breasley remains dedicated to delivering excellence in sleep technology and customer service. Whether through its branded collections or expanded OEM offerings, the company strives to set new standards in the industry. Breasley, tel: 0115 944 5604
Climate matters
Vogue’s latest collection has green credentials at its core
The Vogue Beds Group has been constantly innovating with different products and ideas since its inception and has been determined to provide its customers with a place they can buy mattresses and all types of bases and headboards. It wanted to create a one-stop for its customers, giving them the opportunity to have a variety of mattress ranges from the traditional to an eco-friendly sustainable range.
The journey for the new Climate mattress collection began in 2022 with the development of the Vegan mattress, when Vogue was the first NBF member to make a The Vegan Society-certified mattress. Following an extended period of learning, understanding the market from customers and retail research, it has progressed this mattress to the next level.
The Climate mattress collection has a new recyclable fabric, with the construction of the fabric made from polyester and Repreve, yarn extracted from plastic bottles from the ocean.
The fillings also consist of recycled plastic, from the spring insulated pad to the specialist fibre fillings offering support and comfort. This brings it in line with circular economy attributes, where materials never become waste and are regenerated.
There is a choice of three types of Climate mattresses featuring 1,000 pocket, 1,500 pocket and 2,000 pocket spring counts. All the pocket springs have been approved and certified by The Vegan Society, ensuring no animal content is used in the manufacturing process. This moves Vogue beyond
just ‘Vegan Friendly’, offering retailers and consumers the very best of sustainable, recyclable and comfortable mattress choices.
The three mattresses offer a different comfort/tension level: Meadow 1,000 offers a medium-soft feel; Floral 1,500 a medium-firm feel and Forest 2,000 a firm feel.
The company operates from its head office and factory in Barwell, just outside Leicester. The factory itself was previously one of George Ward’s shoe factories, one of the UK’s largest shoe and boot manufacturers, and some of
1993 and has continuously improved and worked on the site to develop the 60,000sqft centre of manufacturing excellence it is today. The factory now also features its own photography studio, research and development area and Factory Direct shop.

Hallmark
Karl Lagerfeld Maison’s second range features flowing elements
The stars of the Karl Lagerfeld Maison Wellen collection – the second from the Maison division of the brand – are its upholstery, creating a balance between sinuous shapes and rigorous structures.
Wellen combines flowing elements with solid structures, blending playful details and enveloping forms with a touch of boldness. The result is a lively yet disciplined ambience, each piece telling a story of balance and modernity.
Lagerfeld’s spirit, a hallmark of his philosophy, is evident in the customisation options for each element, including finishes and modular composition. The upholstery – ranging from two-seater
sofas to fixed and swivel armchairs, as well as the modular sofa – prioritise comfort. Soft, inviting shapes create a cohesive style across the collection.
The collection pays homage to its creator’s aesthetic with a bold selection of materials and colours that enhance the softness of its lines. Silver leather and vividly coloured velvets combine to infuse each piece with character and personality, making them ideal for contemporary and refined interiors.
The modular sofa in midnight blue velvet, featuring 10 configurable elements, represents the pinnacle of versatility, allowing for unique
configurations to suit every need and style. The collection’s armchairs, available in fixed or swivel versions, add a playful touch of sophistication, while their fluid curves and materials transform spaces into an oasis of comfort and design.
Wellen was created in collaboration with designer Toan Nguyen, who reinterpreted Lagerfeld’s artistic legacy through a contemporary lens. It is both a homage to the past and a forward-looking vision, captured most purely in the collection’s upholstered furniture.

SUPPORT FOR FURNISHING INDUSTRY PEOPLE
Pioneering progress
Investment has brought many benefits
Fibreline has grown into a trusted leader in cushion manufacturing since its foundation in 1982. Over four decades the company has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to being the ‘first choice’ fillings supplier in the industry. This vision is driven by its dedication to innovation and investment in the four cornerstones of its business: people, product, process and performance. These guiding principles drive growth, development and excellence across every facet of the company.
Last autumn marked a significant milestone for Fibreline with completion of a 14,000sqft extension to its Keighley, West Yorkshire facility. This development emphasises the company’s dedication to
progress and innovation. The additional space demonstrates its determination to meet and exceed customer expectations while fostering a positive work environment. ‘The modern layout and advanced machinery not only make our jobs more efficient but also create a really enjoyable environment to work in,’ says one member of production staff.
The ground floor is dedicated to increasing insulator kitting capacity through cutting-edge machinery. The other 7,000sqft streamlines the production of Fibreline’s acclaimed Encore range, including Airwave. These developments enable Fibreline to consistently deliver high quantities and quality, reinforcing its reputation for
reliability in the market.
Fibreline understands its success depends on the dedication and expertise of its workforce. The extended facility not only boosts operational efficiency but also offers a modern, comfortable workspace that reflects the company’s commitment to employee wellbeing. This focus on morale enhances precision and productivity, ensuring industryleading performance. A cornerstone of Fibreline’s innovation lies in its dedicated technical development team. Collaborating closely with customers, this team maximises the potential of Fibreline’s offerings, helping customers deliver premium-quality products to the mass market.
The factory extension is more than just a physical upgrade: it is a symbol of Fibreline’s unwavering commitment to its vision. Conviviality central
Make the dining room – or space – the centre of attention
A fluid environment, often flowing from the living room, the dining room has always represented the highest expression of conviviality, where aesthetics and functionality come together in a perfect balance.
Three new designs for Giorgetti transform this environment into a welcoming and sophisticated space. Each element is made of precious materials, selected for their intrinsic beauty and fine aesthetics and finished with obsessive attention to detail.
Elegance, fluidity and clean lines characterise the Mistral table, designed by Dainelli Studio, which reaffirms its long-standing partnership with Giorgetti. The protagonist of the dining room as well as the meeting room, Mistral is a sculptural piece of furniture able to combine solidity and lightness, with legs reminiscent of sails unfurled in the wind.
Available in 220cm and 260cm rectangular versions and 160cm, 180cm and 200cm diameter circular versions, Mistral is characterised by a combination of materials with a high degree of visual tactility: from the ash wood base with titanium-lacquered feet to the fine veining of the marble or ash top with titanium-lacquered underside.
In the round version, the marble top is also divided into four segments with a bronze rod in the centre. The ash wood top, on the other hand, is divided into three segments with the grain running towards the centre of the table.
The rounded corners of the table top give an exclusive sophistication that
enables the design to sit harmoniously in varied contexts, classic or contemporary.
The Plume chair by Dainelli Studio is inspired by the lightness of a feather. The seat and back cushions seem to float in the air, as if crystallised in the act of resting delicately on the solid ash wood structure, conveying harmony suspended in time.
Plume is a chair that strips away the structure of the superfluous to reveal the beauty of the essential. Behind its apparent simplicity hides a great quest to meet the highest demands in terms of ergonomics and comfort. Attention to detail is key: from the piping that runs along the cushions, framing them, to the cross-section of the legs, angular at the front and round at the back.
Volumes and transparencies, plays
of light, shadows and perspectives characterise the Hikari sideboard designed by Hirsch Bedner Associates. Hikari stands for versatility, combining storage and display functions; a true cabinet of curiosities to showcase cherished objects, precious sculptures and fine bottles, telling of one’s passions.
Characterised by a lightweight structure and metal profiles, the cabinets are closed on one side by an ash wood door, which conceals smoked glass shelves backlit by LED. On the right, a drawer and an open volume with a leather base, framed by glass backdrops and metal profiles in different widths.
A mirrored inner side combines with a back-printed, shaded and tempered glass top with a rippled effect.

Nearly Time for the First Cut? ... Not with Novoturf Artificial Grass!
Say goodbye to the mowing, watering, and muddy patches with Novoturf Artificial Grass. Designed for a lushus, perfectly manicured look all year round, it’s
Veca’s recent switch to LCM Marin Design Studio’s art direction has seen the creation of the LYXO brand, offering lighting and outdoor furniture.
Inspired by jellyfish and their ethereal elegance, Elly captures the magic of the sea. Its slender metallic legs evoke delicate tentacles, while the diffuser with its textured, transparent, striped design adds charm and sophistication. In the floor version, it can even be used
in water, making it highly versatile, and it is equipped with customisable RGB lighting that allows for playful atmospheric variations.
The lighting can be used indoors and outside.
Alba enriches any environment by creating a delicate play of light and design, thanks to the high transparency and brightness of its acrylic material. This asymmetrically hourglass-shaped
lamp-vase, featuring embossed details, imparts floral beauty and subtle luminosity to intimate spaces.
Two versions are available, depending on whether the smaller or larger bowl is preferred as the light source. The upper bowl, oriented upwards, serves as a holder for objects, flowers, or as a small vase. Alba comes in shades of smoky pink and smoky grey.

The iconic Colombo lamp has a new look
The Colombo lamp has a new colour: Scarlet Red.
The three versions – floor, wall and ceiling – were already available in black and anodic bronze, with the red variant giving it a new look.
Joe Colombo designed the eponymous lamp in 1970, on the wave of the rapid rise of the halogen light. The design was one of the first domestic lamps to use the new type of bulb, and its three elements – base, chrome stem and adjustable reflector – responded to the demands for clean shapes and technological functionality.
Even after more than 50 years, the Colombo series remains one of Oluce’s bestselling lights.
To mark its 50th anniversary, a LED dimmer version was introduced. Visit: www.oluce.com

Corporate membership provides opportunities for leading businesses to support its charitable activities, get involved with civic events and network with other members. Each corporate member has three representatives admitted as corporate liverymen who act as the main points of contact between the business and FMC.
‘An important aspect of The Furniture Makers’ Company has been to bring together people from right across the furnishings sector, making it a vital platform – through both its social events and its many committees – to meet and network with like-minded professionals. The City of London is also very special and I am proud to be a Freeman of the City.
‘The charitable aspect of The Furniture
Makers’ Company is immensely important. It has always had a commitment to welfare, which became even more of a focus after it merged with the longestablished Furnishing Trades Benevolent Association in 2013. The charitable arm of the livery company has, over the years, helped hundreds of people who have found themselves facing financial difficulties and who work – or have in the past worked – in some role in the sector.

Wiemann will debut 2025 collections and update existing ranges
Award-winning German bedroom manufacturer Wiemann is set to unveil ranges and updates at JFS.
‘We are looking forward to a bumper JFS with lots of new products across all price points. All our collections are high quality, stylish, contemporary and chic. They are practical and stunning, offering something to suit every size or type of bedroom. Wiemann is a tried, trusted and reliable brand, qualities that are so important in today’s climate and that we value highly,’ says Simon Hewitt, md of Litmus Furniture, Wiemann agent for the UK and Ireland.
‘Customers know our high standards across all our products and the new VIP ranges are no exception. We are looking forward to launching them on the UK market at the NEC. The show is promising to be something very special indeed,’ says Kai Schwenke, Wiemann export manager.
The incoming collections, on show in Hall 4, Stand C26, will complement Wiemann’s existing premium VIP ranges, including the bestselling, award-winning Monaco and Lagos and the latest addition, New York. Some build on design features found in these established designs and some are completely new.
‘As well as the beautiful new ranges, we have some finishes making their debut, which are sure to excite buyers. These include a matt foil for carcass and doors and a glass finish. Choosing different options on doors and carcasses can completely transform the look of a

‘Look out for updates to our popular, flexible Monaco system, the perfect choice for any room. Whether it’s a dressing room, master bedroom or loft conversion, Monaco is a perfect fit.’
Many of the new collections have already been launched in Europe, with prototypes seen at the MOW show in the late autumn. All were well received and, with minor tweaks, are now headed to Birmingham.

Delivering style, comfort and understandable shapes is key for Whitemeadow
Whitemeadow’s latest collection demonstrates a clear focus on bringing a sense of individuality to its designs whilst carefully maintaining commercial flair. Renowned for its considered approach, there’s a thought process behind every range featured at JFS.
From cosy family shapes to statement scroll arms, the key message is an impressive scope of manufacturing and design capabilities. Keen to deliver style, comfort and understandable shapes for today’s customer, Whitemeadow keeps its finger on the pulse when it comes to the latest interior trends. From the rise of warm colour palettes to the demand of modular living, the trendleading collection considers how customers are living in today’s world.
‘We’ve focused on curating ranges with clever pieces to offer a customisable nature. We’re picking up on the demand for versatility, whether that’s in the form of modular designs or neat footstool shapes that fit into U-shapes like a puzzle piece. Having the ability to utilise their space as much as possible, and the flexibility to rearrange their seating to suit different occasions is a great selling point for today’s customer,’ says Paul Ainley, Whitemeadow design director.
Bringing newness and reimagined icons to JFS, Whitemeadow is looking to refresh and inspire.
‘Aspen is a key launch that’s particularly exciting, drawing inspiration from modern interiors with a clean, minimal
design complete with a slim Oxford edge. There’s Rocco, the modular hero designed to meet the demands of the modern customer, complete with stainresistant fabric options. Whitemeadow icon Penthouse returns with a completely fresh take featuring a relaxed, warmtoned fabric story. Fresh opportunity
Tap into growing demand for affordable, high-quality sleep products
As the UK’s mattress market continues to evolve, the rise of direct-to-consumer brands offers a fresh opportunity for retailers to tap into growing consumer demand for affordable, high-quality sleep products.
Known for its premium memory foam mattresses and a 365-night trial, Nectar Sleep has built a strong reputation and is expanding its footprint in the UK. For retailers, partnering with or stocking Nectar Sleep products presents a range of benefits that could boost sales, customer loyalty and brand reputation.
Nectar Sleep has earned its reputation by offering mattresses that blend comfort, support and value. Its products are designed to provide superior support through multiple layers of foam and spring combinations. What sets Nectar apart, however, is its customer-centric approach, particularly its 365-night trial period, which allows shoppers to return their mattress if it doesn’t meet expectations. This risk-free approach appeals to a wide range of consumers, including those who may be hesitant to invest in a higher-end mattress. For retailers, carrying a trusted brand such as Nectar Sleep helps build consumer confidence. Shoppers are more likely to make a purchase when they recognise a reputable brand with transparent policies, and Nectar’s customer-first ethos has built a loyal following.
The company says it has three distinct benefits for retailers: increased
consumer traffic and sales; exclusive retail products and marketing support. With its established brand recognition, Nectar Sleep drives consumer interest. As more people look to upgrade their sleep experience, retailers stand to benefit from increased foot traffic and higher conversion rates. Retailers are offered exclusivity on the brand’s most premium mattress, allowing the opportunity to sell customers that are driven to stores options that are not available through Nectar Sleep’s website. Retailers can profit from higher margins typically associated with branded products while appealing to a broader range of customers.
The company invests heavily in digital marketing, creating targeted advertisements and campaigns to drive
awareness and sales. Retailers who partner with Nectar Sleep benefit from this robust marketing support, reducing need for individual advertising efforts.
With the UK’s mattress market becoming increasingly competitive, partnering with or stocking Nectar Sleep products gives retailers the chance to stand out by offering a high-quality, trusted brand that resonates with today’s sleep-conscious consumers. By tapping into Nectar’s strong reputation, competitive pricing and effective marketing, retailers can increase sales, improve customer satisfaction and position themselves as leaders in the growing sleep products market.
Nectar will be exhibiting on Hall 5, Stand C41 at the show.

Consumers have a year to decide
Path to success
A change of direction is delivering for Shire Beds
Shire Beds is continuing on its growth journey. After deciding it needed a new direction, it focused on two aspects, own-brand and hand side-stitching, and transformed the business.
Shire set out to be the white label supplier of choice, offering high quality products, guaranteeing retailers’ margins and having a point of difference. This has led to almost 100 retailer partnerships with significant retailers in a short time scale.
To achieve this with its hand sidestitched products, Shire developed a recruitment and training programme and went from having one hand sidestitcher and producing an average of a dozen mattresses a week to almost 20 hand side-stitchers and producing more than 100 hand side-stitched mattresses a day.
Internum and Cool Nytz are Shire’s latest ranges. Internum has hidden tufts while offering the expected comfort and style, with pocket spring counts of up
to 7,000. The collection is designed to make the opulent hidden tuft and hand side-stitched mattress accessible to the wider consumer market. Cool Nytz is a traditional pocket sprung mattress, pillow top and box top mattress. The range has a cool-feel quilted knitted cover. Both ranges are offered with own branding options.
‘We have proven our ability to become the white label partner for a large number of quality retailers –90 and counting – and have firmly established ourselves as “The Brand Behind Your Brand” in under a year, aided by the huge sales of the original Capri and Ravello specifications, and we continue to innovate and expand our ranges,’ says Fara Butt, Shire director.
‘Capri has been recommended by Bed Industry Awards-winning retailer Dreamland Beds as its product of the year and it is now a bestseller for a large range of quality high-street retailers as well as being sold by the major online
ones. Retailers are so confident buying the products that they are prepared to put their brand on it.
‘Personalised in-store POS is available with most ranges. The own-branding ensures there is exclusivity in the market and allows the retailer the protection that makes products sustainable. Shire Beds is able to personalise most of the POS in-house, from brand creation to digitisation of the imagery to crafting the hand-stitched pillow cases, bolsters and footmats.
‘We offer a short and reliable delivery time of two weeks or less, so the retailer has confidence in ensuring their customer’s journey from order to usage is speedy. Furthermore, customers can rest assured as products come with an extended guarantee.
‘We have moved the dial on the traditional hand side-stitched market sector and have the right products at the right time at the right price.’ Email: info@shirebeds.co.uk
Stability
Nolte Möbel has navigated economic challenges
In a turbulent period for the German furniture industry Nolte Möbel has successfully navigated economic challenges since its parent company filed for insolvency in November 2023, ensuring stability and guaranteed deliveries to UK retailers over the past 12 months.
The insolvency highlighted the difficulties within the furniture manufacturing sector, as companies across Europe grapple with rising costs, supply chain disruptions and shifting consumer demand.
‘Amid this uncertainty the Nolte name continued to stand for reliability and resilience, with Nolte Möbel’s focus firmly on stability and consistent service, with orders delivered on time and in full, ensuring minimal disruption for customers; orders processed and confirmed on the same day, reflecting efficiency and responsiveness, and guaranteed deliveries as trust and dependability remain cornerstones of the company’s ethos. It is committed to being a “powerful, dependable and
predictable partner”, with the team fully dedicated to meeting customers’ needs,’ says Chris Fountain, Nolte Möbel UK & Ireland sales director.
The company’s latest bed system Sonyo 2.0 was debuted at the Brussels Furniture Fair in November, with incredibly positive feedback. The new Catania Oak finish was also on show
across the Horizont, Alegro and Sonyo 2.0 ranges and will be available to order from mid-February.
‘We look forward to meeting all of our retail partners at January Furniture Show where we will showcase our new collections and finishes. You can find us in Hall 4, Stand D34,’ says Fountain. Nolte, tel: 0161 767 244

comfort and fantastic fabrics, offering a little bit of luxury at an everyday price.
‘We would love for you to visit our stand, Hall 1, Stand C20, and let us talk you through our inspiration and designs and see where Alpha can fit into your stores. Turn left as you enter the Hall and we will be under our famous Neon sign.’ Alpha Designs, tel: 01902 492 937

Trust
Putting the customer at the heart of everything is key
‘Firstly, all of us at Castelan would like to wish you a very happy 2025 and we hope that you all had a busy holiday period but that you managed to find time to spend with family or friends, says Martin Napper, Castelan Group ceo.
‘Over the past three to four years, we have led the way in guiding our clients through the difficult and challenging regulatory landscape and we are grateful
for the trust that they have placed in us to do this. Our protection schemes have evolved and improved to be the best on the market, and we are proud of that achievement. We have made these significant enhancements to ensure that we keep ourselves and our clients on the right side of regulation by putting the customer at the heart of everything we do. We do not expect regulatory focus to lessen in the foreseeable future, and whilst others scramble to catch up, we will continue to lead in advising our clients with the best possible guidance. We will do this by continuing to innovate schemes that are great for your customers but have a strong commercial benefit for you.
‘As with any promise made at the point of sale, it must be backed up by actions when it comes to the point of need for the customer. We have continued to invest heavily in delivering exceptional service in this area – we answer 90% of calls
within 20 seconds and only 0.5% of calls to us are abandoned. Customers don’t want to wait too long on the phone either and our average wait time of 10 seconds means they won’t.
‘Our Furniture Care Network continues to deliver lead times to appointment that are way ahead of others in this sector: an average of five days but less in some areas. This has been a consistent focus for us because it delights your customer and means that they are not ringing you to chase up service requests. Our warranty customers benefit because we can get to them quickly and resolve issues before they get worse, so it’s a win–win situation. This is the kind of service that your customer has come to expect, and we are committed to growing our network of technicians as the volume of our work increases.
‘No doubt 2025 will bring its own challenges, but we stand ready to meet them and that’s why our clients put so much trust in us.’

Tailor made
Retail management systems designed for unique needs
A one-size-fits-all approach to retail management simply doesn’t work. As a leader in retail management software, and experts within the furniture and bedding industry, Ordorite has long been recognised for its commitment to tailoring solutions to the unique needs of each business. By collaborating closely with retailers, Ordorite ensures its full retail management system enhances efficiency and improves customer satisfaction, while driving financial and operational success.
With its roots in serving the furniture, bedding and related industries, Ordorite’s adaptability and collaborative ethos recently shone through when working with a furniture and flooring chain with 11 stores across Ireland. With a team of more than 20 flooring fitters,
this client presented a new set of challenges: challenges Ordorite was eager to tackle.
The partnership led to the creation of bespoke system features designed to address the complexities of flooring installation. One addition was a smart fitting scheduler to calculate fitting times based on the specific flooring type, whether carpet, laminate or hardwood. The system takes into account factors such as size of boxes of flooring, enabling the retailer to allocate fitter time more effectively. This not only optimises the diary but also significantly reduces wasted time and instances of overbooking.
Ordorite also introduced an algorithm to support upselling within the system, guiding sales teams to suggest the most
suitable add-ons for each flooring type. This feature ensures customers receive the right accessories for their purchase while boosting sales for the retailer.
These tailored solutions highlight Ordorite’s ability to adapt its offerings to meet the demands of individual retailers. For businesses in the furniture, bedding or related industries seeking to revolutionise their retail management in 2025, Ordorite offers a powerful suite of tools designed to streamline operations, improve customer service and maximise efficiency.
Ordorite will be at INDX Furniture and January Furniture Show providing demonstrations and information on how it can tailor its retail management systems to suit each retailer’s needs.

Partnership success
Retailers have been committing to long-term contracts with Guardsman
Over the past few months, Guardsman has celebrated significant achievements in securing new partnerships and strengthening existing relationships, demonstrating the company’s position as a leader in the furniture care industry.
‘These new partnerships underscore the commitment and dedication of the entire team. We have reestablished a valued relationship with Swyft Upholstery, which returned to us after a period with a competitor. Swyft’s return is a testament to our exceptional team, our policies and practices that enable success for our partners while maintaining the highest standards of compliance,’ says Zeyn Kassam, Guardsman commercial director.
‘Swyft was particularly impressed by our ability to outperform competitors, recognising our partnership approach, hard work and dedication to providing quality service, which has strengthened the trust that leading brands place in Guardsman’s expertise.’
In recent months, several retailers have transitioned to Guardsman, drawn by the company’s professional and collaborative approach as well as its commitment to guiding partners through the complex requirements of the Financial Conduct Authority.
‘Guardsman’s support for its retail partners is ongoing, extending far beyond the initial contract signing. We are dedicated to providing continuous guidance and resources to ensure each partnership is successful and compliant with the latest regulatory standards,’
says Richard Oloyede, Guardsman head of sales and key partnerships.
‘Retailers are increasingly recognising Guardsman’s market-leading position and commitment to excellence, and many are returning, appreciating the company’s unwavering dedication to compliance and its award-winning service. We’re committed to maintaining high compliance standards and staying agile in an evolving regulatory landscape.’
Guardsman’s growth and innovation efforts are also thriving internationally.
Paul Jennings, Guardsman head of sales and development for the UK and Europe, has spent time in Italy, strengthening retail partnerships and developing new product offerings. The long-term partnership with Fenice Care System has been pivotal in enabling the creation of product ranges that align with the latest trends in furniture fabrics.
‘Fenice is a global leader in specialised furniture care solutions, and we have collaborated for more than 20 years. With
new materials emerging in the market, we have worked with the team in Italy to develop products adaptable to the latest upholstery fabrics. We are in the final stages of testing an innovative product expected to make a significant difference in the care and maintenance of both leather and fabric upholstery. Once finalised, it will be introduced to retail partners, marking an exciting advance in Guardsman’s product line-up.’
Changes within Guardsman’s sales team are proving fruitful. The team’s efforts have contributed to the trust and confidence shown by retailers, who are either returning to Guardsman or committing to long-term contracts.
‘These recent successes reflect the effectiveness of Guardsman’s strategies and the dedication of its people, underscoring the company’s mission to lead the industry through integrity, innovation and a commitment to partner success,’ says Kassam.

The pothole problem
Don’t let your customers’ floors become like the country’s roads
Every winter the pothole problem sinks to new depths. But it’s no joke: potholes affect all of us, in our business and personal lives. Roads are peppered with more and more potholes – there’s even a National Pothole Day on 15 January.
One in six local roads in England and Wales desperately needs an upgrade before it becomes dangerous. A third are inadequate and only 51% are in good order, according to Asphalt Industry Alliance, which represents asphalt raw materials suppliers, producers and contractors. It estimates the cost of repairs at £14bn and says the backlog will take a decade to clear.
Road traffic exacerbates the problem of rain, snow, frost and salt: if not fixed straightaway, a small crack can expand into a hole 10cm deep x 1m wide. If your car’s tyre gets a blow-out you could claim compensation, but it won’t stop you cursing or heaving on the jack and wheel wrench to get back on the road.
More than two million roads – even new roads – are dug up every year by private gas, electricity, water and telecom companies. Anecdotally, people often believe that these utility repairs are not always up to the required normal standard. In the UK, we usually have more potholes than in continental Europe due to higher traffic loads, higher density of buried utilities and a
higher number of freeze/thaw cycles, as our temperature tends to be above freezing with frequent dips below.
The pothole problem is similar to the flooring problem found by interior designers, architects, retailers and the furniture and flooring trades. Heavy furniture, stiletto heels and chairs scraped back and forth can severely damage flooring.
Stroolmount has a range of flooring protection products that help prevent the damage in the first place: the secret
is cushioning. Proven Stroolmount solutions include Furni-glides, interchangeable Quickclick Glides and Self-adhesive Felt – from as little as 1p per piece. And if the worst happens, family firm Stroolmount also has flooring and furniture repair kits.

Navigating the future
This year will see new standards shape the industry
‘As we move into 2025, SATRA would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all our customers for helping to make 2024 a successful and rewarding year. We wish our customers every success for the year ahead. The past year brought many changes and challenges for the furniture industry. From adapting to evolving regulations to tackling supply chain complexities, manufacturers and suppliers demonstrated remarkable resilience. On a positive note, 2024 saw increased innovation in sustainable materials and processes, along with a growing emphasis on designing for the circular economy – shaping a more sustainable future for the sector,’ says Phil Weal, SATRA head of floorcoverings and furniture flammability.
‘In June, SATRA was delighted to host The Furniture Maker’s Company, the furnishing industry’s charity. Eight young professionals visited us as part of their three-week tour of UK businesses in the furniture and furnishings sector. Johnny Worthington, SATRA head of furniture, gave an insightful presentation on the critical role of furniture testing. September brought the Bed Show, where we enjoyed connecting with our valued customers and forging new relationships within the beds and mattresses industry. Some of the SATRA team also attended the Care Show and the Autumn Furniture Show, which showcased innovative
designs and exciting trends across the furniture market.
‘One of the highlights of 2024 was receiving the Interiors Monthly award for Best Product Testing Provider. This underscores SATRA’s dedication to delivering high-quality services to the furniture industry, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who voted for us.’
SATRA is excited to support the industry in navigating key developments in 2025. Sustainability will remain a central focus, with increasing emphasis on adopting eco-friendly materials and processes, advancing the circular economy and reducing impact on the climate, while new standards are set to shape the industry in the coming year. This includes the publication of
EN 12520:2024 Furniture – Safety, strength and durability – Requirements for domestic seating early in 2025 and the forthcoming BS EN 17684—a standard for electrically operated furniture addressing stability, strength, durability, and safety.
The industry also awaits developments from the UK government regarding the updated flammability regulations.
‘SATRA strives to keep our customers informed and prepared for the latest changes in standards and regulations. We are dedicated to supporting the furniture and flooring industries with world-class facilities and expertise. If you are attending January Furniture Show, visit us at Hall 5, Stand A32 to find out how SATRA can help your business thrive.’ Visit: www.satra.com
