EDITOR’S COMMENT

Andrew Kidd EDITOR

A change of mood The British love-hate relationship with the weather shows no sign of stopping, which should be a good thing in the next few weeks. It is common for retailers to blame the vagaries of the weather for a drop in sales (and rarely to thank it when things pick up), but I think after the so-called spring that we’ve had things may be changing. Shoppers on my high street are now smiling and even saying hello, after months of largely viewing walking as an Himalayan climb: head down, focus firmly in front and with all good speed. Now with a bit of sunshine they seem more relaxed, prepared to stop, chat and look in shop windows. And go in. Of course what they do after they have entered is a different story, but it does seem as if a mood has lifted. People have adjusted to their individual economic circumstances

and are more confident in what they feel they are able to spend. The group of businessmen that have bought Axminster, including former md Joshua Dutfield and Stephen Boyd, chairman of leather company Pittards, and Centric Commercial Finance, will hope that an Axminster carpet (see p10) will be among the potential purchases. Saving such an iconic name (and 100 jobs) is great news, but now the hard work starts. As an industry veteran said to me, the new Axminster has a second chance, with all the advantages of post-administration purchases with no old liabilities such as debts and pensions and a brand reputation. But that second chance is probably its only chance. With largely the same management in place that went into administration, it needs to quickly find an USP that can make a profit. Many thanks to those who have voted in the Interiors Monthly 2013 Awards. As always, it is providing an interesting insight into retail performance. If you haven’t voted yet, the form is online and on p8. And golfers, have you signed up to prove your ability and support two important charities? If you haven’t, then phone 01562 749 300. Act now.

New owner puts residential focus on Axminster Axminster Carpets is to focus on the residential market after a consortium of local businessmen, including former md Joshua Dutfield and Stephen Boyd, chairman of leather company Pittards, bought the carpet manufacturer. The group has secured funding from Centric Commercial Finance. Axminster Carpets (2013) Limited has bought the Axminster manufacturing site, which employs 100 people, and the factory outlet stores in Axminster and Buckfast. Dutfield says: ‘I have fought for the survival of this business over the last few months and indeed the last few weeks have been the most challenging of my life. I have been determined to do everything possible to secure the continuation of the business for the Axminster community and I feel a sense of pride in securing our future. ‘On behalf of the management team I would like to thank our customers, suppliers and employees who have been behind the efforts to save the business throughout this difficult period. ‘We have a strong and talented team who I am confident possess the skills needed to take this business long into the future. This fantastic brand and company will go on making world-class product in Axminster; we march forward with pride and with a passion to succeed,’ he adds.

Panther flexes its muscles on Beales’ board Andrew Perloff, Panther executive chairman and founder, and the largest shareholder at department store chain Beales, has brought in Stuart Lyons, Airsprung Group chairman, to the board in an effort to improve performance. Panther bought Airprung Group for £7.9m in October 2011 and owns 29.72% of Beales shares. As well as its shareholding in the

group, Panther owns the freehold of Beales’ Lowestoft, Wisbech and Beccles branches. These are let on a share of profits basis until May 2014, when panther is likely to revert to a traditional lease. Lyons was previously md of UDS Group plc, owner of Allders department stores, Richard Shops, John Collier and Timpson businesses, and chairman and

Ex Brian James director banned A former director of failed retailer Brian James has been banned from being a director for five years. Stephen Dodd paid himself and friends rather than customers or creditors ahead of the retailer’s failure. Founded in 1975, Brian James began to experience cashflow problems in 2009 and by February 2011 was unable to pay all its debts. In March 2011 it went

into administration with debts of more than £2.6m, including almost £100,000 of customer deposits. The Insolvency Service discovered that in the six weeks before administration Dodd paid £53,864 to himself and friends, including wage arrears and advance holiday pay, at a rate of more than double his previous salary.

chief executive of Royal Doulton. He replaces Simon Peters, Panther’s finance director, as Beales non-executive. The change comes as the loss making chain has agreed to the possible sale of its Tonbridge, Kent store to Sainsbury’s, which occupies the next door site. Beales has been paid £1m and if conditions are met and the supermarket buys the store it will pay up to a further £3m.

Olympia owed £4m Failed upholstery manufacturer Olympia Furniture owed more than £4m. The latest report from administrators FPR Advisory shows the firm owed unsecured, non-preferential creditors £2.5m while creditors overall face a shortfall of £4.39m. The Ashton-under-Lyne company was closed in February with the loss of 135 jobs. SKG Capital bought it from Welle in 2011 after Olympia lost a major Ikea contract. A ‘time to pay’ deal was agreed with HMRC in 2012 but it could not secure finance.

Sales jump at Carpetright Carpetright, the country’s largest flooring retailer, has enjoyed strong UK sales and a ‘solid’ performance in the Republic of Ireland. Like for like UK retail sales increased by 6.7% in the quarter to 20 April. UK like for like sales were 5.6% higher with total sales up 4.4%. ‘We are pleased to report good like for like sales growth in the UK. While the recent cold spring weather has been positive to our sales, we believe this performance reflects the continued success of our programme of self-help initiatives,’ says Darren Shapland, Carpetright chief executive. These initiatives include the ongoing programme of store refurbishments, introducing an improved laminate range to more stores, the development of the

bed business and the increased use of digital media. He says: ‘This has been achieved in a market which remains challenging with consumers very focused on getting a good deal, necessitating a highly visible and compelling promotional programme.’ Business in the Rest of Europe, down 10.2%, continues to contrast a solid performance in both Belgium and the Republic of Ireland, offset by the continued weak performance of business in the Netherlands. ‘The group result for the year to date is in line with management’s expectations and while trading conditions remain challenging, we have good momentum with our self-help initiatives which we believe will carry on to the new financial year,’ adds Shapland.

Betta Living seeks investment for expansion

Betta Living plans more stores

Bedroom, kitchen and bathroom chain Betta Living is looking for external investment to accelerate its expansion after a jump in profits. The chain has 29 stores and at least two more are planned for 2013. It has appointed Rickitt Mitchell to advise on a potential investor or trade partner. The move comes after parent company Dean House saw pre-tax profits climb by 45% to £1.5m in the year to 20 November. Sales rose 22% to £29.9m. ‘The home improvement market has

Whitestone adds Thomas Witter to its portfolio Carpet manufacturer Whitestone Group has bought Thomas Witter, adding to its portfolio of brands which already includes Hugh MacKay, Gaskell MacKay, Carpet Line Direct and Whitestone Weavers. Thomas Witter will continue its manufacturing operation while distribution will be moved to Whitestone’s new distribution centre in the North East of England. ‘There’s a natural fit with Whitestone so when the opportunity arose it made strategic sense to go for it,’ says Steve Byrne, Whitestone md. ‘As another wool house with a proud home-grown

heritage and strong British wool standing, there are parallels between the two businesses that should make the transition easier. ‘Wool is and always will be our mainstay and that’s what Thomas Witter does best. We look forward to seeing how our ranges can complement each other in different markets to offer the customer an even broader selection of wool blend performance products,’ he says. Thomas Witter has a strong presence in the residential and new housing sectors and Byrne says the company will be looking to maintain this focus.

been through a torrid time but we have been able to grow our market share and develop our brand by maintaining customer service levels and controlling costs. We have started the current year extremely strongly, with online sales up by 30% and higher average order values,’ says Noel Dean, Dean House chairman. ‘In addition, the new stores will greatly enhance our geographic presence and give us physical locations in areas where we already have very good Internet demand,’ he adds.

Quartet for Steinhoff Steinhoff International has added to its UK portfolio with the acquisition of Myer’s, Slumberland, Staples and Dunlopillo. Manufacturing will continue at all the current locations and plans are under way for growth and investment over the coming years, says Andy Murdoch, Steinhoff UK Manufacturing md.

Show move The South West Furniture Show is to be held two weeks earlier than planned. The event was due to have taken place on 1-3 October, but would have clashed with the Branded Furniture Show and Minerva. The show will now take place on 17-19 September.

Godwin vows to carry on Dunlop Adhesives has appointed Amy Rushton as assistant brand manager.

Stuart Hibbert, Breasley Consumer Products md, has been elected National Bed Federation president.

Owner Ike Godwin has vowed to rebuild Stockton retailer Godwin Furniture after the store was destroyed by fire – and work until he is 100. The town centre store was gutted by a fire on 23 April. It has been deemed structurally unsound and will have to be dismantled to make it safe. Witnesses spoke of flames twice the height of the three-storey building. ‘My aim was to keep working until I’m 100 and that’s still my aim. I didn’t get to bed until three, and I was up again at six. I wasn’t sleeping the whole time; my mind was racing about what

orders we’ve got coming in, who was supposed to have stuff delivered, what stock we hadn’t sold,’ says Godwin. ‘I’ve had suppliers and customers on the phone all morning. They’ve been marvellous. The first man I called, I was telling him he might not be able to get his furniture until next week, but he was just asking how I am. They’re all worrying about me, but I’m worrying about them. ‘We’re a very old fashioned company, never been late paying a supplier, never ripped a customer off, always delivered on time. People are loyal to us, and that’s paying off now,’ he says.

Race returns to his roots

Derry’s Furniture has named Jill Chandler as sales representative for the North East and Yorkshire. Julian Bowen has appointed Michael Miller as sales representative for the North West of England.

Tredaire is one of Interfloor’s brands

Underlay reorganisation Product and repair services provider Furniture Clinic has appointed Andy Earnshaw as repair service manager.

Underlay manufacturer Interfloor has launched a consultation process with employees following proposals for a major reorganisation that would see the closure of one of its manufacturing plants. The group wants to close its Heathhall, Dumfries plant and consolidate all its PU underlay manufacturing at its primary manufacturing centre in Haslingden, Lancashire. Accessory manufacturing and distribution will remain in Dumfries. Some 108 staff are employed at the sites and 53 will be affected by the proposals.

Furniture retailer Iain Race has opened a new store a year after Race For Furniture was bought by Michael O’Connor Furniture following Race’s administration. Race has opened Holmes and Race on Borough Road, Middlesbrough – where his grandfather Ernest Oswald Race set up business in 1920. ‘There’s a long history of being here and running the business and we thought this would be the ideal place to start again. We hope to be able to offer a personal service that no other furniture business offers,’ he says. ‘One of the partners in the new business is Chris Holmes, who runs a haulage firm, so if a customer wants something delivering to Devon we will do it, if they want us to travel up to Edinburgh we will. ‘Last year was really difficult when the business went into administration so we have gone back to our roots and started again,’ adds Race.

Clare puts plans for bed chain ‘on hold’ Mike Clare has called a halt to the launch of his planned Buzz Beds chain, suggesting that he could not bring himself to compete with Dreams, which he described as his ‘baby’. Clare says his plans for the 60-store chain are ‘on hold’ after difficulties,

14

Interiors Monthly May 2013

including gaining control of a number of former Dreams stores. ‘This has been a difficult decision but I remain hugely enthusiastic and committed to the furniture industry, especially bed retailing, and am keen to remain involved in some

capacity or other,’ he says. ‘There is one more reason and that is more emotional: Dreams was “my baby” and somehow I feel uncomfortable competing against a company that I founded, developed and loved for over 20 years.’

Chris Witt Carpetworld salesman

The real reason for high street suffering I am frustrated with the preconception that the downturn of our high streets is all because of the rise in Internet use. I firmly believe that the fall is due to the fact that landlords will not offer cheaper rents and shorter leases to encourage the Internet businesses to have a shop. As there is no flexibility, they remain Internet based only. When are councils and landlords going to understand that a home-based business run from a room or shed that is successful and wants a small shop, cannot and will not pay three months upfront rent, ongoing legal costs and be tied to a three-year legal lease? If only they would realise there are hundreds of these types of

businesses around. One only has to look at Facebook to understand this. My partner is a couture dressmaker and most of her business comes from the Internet. But some 90% – if not more – of her customers come to visit her as they desire the whole experience. They tell her they get frustrated at the lack of shops offering the old fashioned small business. She is currently renting a small craft unit from the local council on a no-term lease with a three-month notice period. It charges £300 legal fees and one month rent in advance. The units are full and I wonder why. Small businesses have joined together in local industrial units to offset costs and they thrive, even though locally the shops that everyone really wants are boarded up and Nuneaton and Bedworth is dying. Only a massive Tesco keeps the place on the map. We need to really understand why the shops are empty and not palm the excuse on to some unquantifiable reason.

Mobile matters Many companies have not updated their websites for smartphones and tablets There is clear evidence that more people are browsing the web on the go with smartphones and tablets but a worrying number of UK firms – including furniture and flooring retailers – may be at risk of losing the audience they worked hard to acquire as consumers switch to browsing the Internet from a mobile device. According to research commissioned by 1&1 Internet, despite 64% of small business owners having used a mobile device to surf the web in their private lives, more than half (53%) have not yet checked the appearance or functionality of their own business website using this method, says Richard Stevenson (pictured), 1&1 Internet head of corporate communications. The smaller screen and touch functionality of mobile devices can often

26

Interiors Monthly May 2013

make it necessary to adapt the design of websites. From businesses that have examined their web presence from a mobile, 41% admit their website has a reduced appearance from a mobile device, and 36% know of reduced functionality. Only 7% of firms were confident they have optimised their websites for mobile usage, while 65% have no plans to do so, according to 1&1 Internet’s research. It appears that many UK business owners place a low importance on whether their website can be used comfortably from a mobile device. Only the minority of owners (18%) believe a mobile-friendly website would positively impact sales revenue, 23% recognise a link to brand enhancement, and 31% feel it could provide access to a broader range of customers. ‘The figures suggest that complacency on the issue has the potential to place firms at risk of losing website visitors and failing to engage with consumers,’ Stevenson says. It is perhaps unsurprising that mobilefriendly website features are still not

Industry specific templates are available

commonplace. Just a quarter of firms have a location map on their website, or have location listings on popular search engines such as Google, he says. ‘Many UK websites have not yet reached the Smartphone age. Interiors retailers must ensure that when their website is viewed on a mobile, it loads promptly, functions correctly and comprises an attractive and fitting representation of them,’ he explains. There are website packages that help small businesses such as furniture and flooring firms launch an effective website in minutes. In particular, there are low cost packages with a choice of industryspecific templates and content that deliver a website automatically optimised for display on popular smartphones. ‘Every business must ensure they are online whenever and wherever their customers need them. By accommodating the mobility of their online audience, customer loyalty and spend can be enhanced. On-the-go web access is a trend that can be used to a retailer’s advantage,’ adds Stevenson. Driving demand Dormeo Octaspring continues to invest in boosting awareness ‘We’re not happy just to sell product to our retail partners and leave it at that, because the story doesn’t end there,’ says John Bramm, Dormeo Octaspring md. He says the company takes great responsibility for the sell-through of its mattresses, and spending large sums of money advertising Octaspring on TV to drive customers to retailers is a major part of that. It promotes the brand in a variety of ways on TV. Some of this is through the award-winning infomercial, a format which allows it to tell the full story of its new technology. ‘To really create demand for the product we also run co-branded ads in collaboration with retailers on TV and in the local press, and we have been engaging in major TV programme sponsorships, first with Daybreak Weather on ITV and most recently with Bedtime Live. Both of these sponsorships reach a huge audience and fit perfectly with the innovative sleep solutions we are offering,’ he says. Support for the retailer doesn’t end there. It has made significant investment in POS and interactive iPads reinforce all the product benefits consumers will have seen elsewhere. Educating both the retailer and the consumer not just about the product, but sleep in general, is

28

Interiors Monthly May 2013

Dormeo Octaspring marked National Bed Month with publicity stunts

important to the company, says Bramm. Octaspring has also achieved notable growth in social media and PR in recent months, receiving nationwide coverage for a sleep stunt in Central London during National Bed Month. ‘This wasn’t just about creating a fun video, we carried out some research into the sleep habits of 1,000 Britons, and included the question asking people what were the strangest places

they have slept,’ explains Bramm. ‘We had some fabulous engagement across our social channels with this and the survey made it into the national press. It was a great opportunity to have some fun, while reinforcing the message that too few Britons are getting a good night’s sleep, and that having the right mattress could be absolutely key to daytime well-being.’ Email: Jim.Harrower@dormeo.co.uk

Increasing comfort Silentnight has enhanced its Classics Collection Silentnight has recently upgraded its long established Classics Collection to offer retailers increased choice when it comes to helping customers get a great night’s sleep. The collection now features pocket spring mattresses to meet growing demand in the market. The 1200 Classic Pocket Luxury, 1000 Classic Memory and 800 Classic Pocket models all incorporate Silentnight’s Mirapocket spring system with targeted zoned support. All three models offer features including memory foam, Purotex probiotics to help allergy sufferers and ensure the mattress is hygienically clean and Ecofibres to prevent overheating. To complement the new mattresses, the sprung divan bases have been improved. ‘The upgraded sprung divan base offers consumers a softer, more luxurious feel. The sprung base works together with the mattress to adapt to the body’s contours. It also features a sprung edge base that helps to prolong the life of the bed. In contrast, solid top divan bases have a solid, non-sprung top panel and are ideal in offering exceptional comfort but a firmer feel,’ says Claire Fenton, Silentnight brand manager. The company helps retailers communicate the features of its upgraded sprung divan base with instore POS and display models featuring half sprung base and half solid top divan bases. Customers can feel the difference and choose the firmness and support they prefer. Its latest Ottoman storage solution also helps maximise space, with the front half of the bed lifting to offer discreet underbed storage plus two drawers. ‘Our extended Classics offer and upgraded divan base solutions have been launched to meet the growing demands of the bed market, while enhancing the ever popular Classics collection. The new models offer retailers a host of comfort and storage features ensuring that there is an offer to suit all styles, tastes and budgets,’ adds Fenton. Silentnight, tel: 01282 813 333

A royal history On October 26, 1915, when visiting troops in France, George V’s horse reared and fell, after being excited by cheering crowds, causing severe straining to the King’s back. On his return to the UK, he was advised by his doctors to sleep on a Staples bed to maintain correct spinal support. That the bed had ‘given satisfaction’ to the King was then used in all company literature and advertisements. In the ensuing years similar beds were supplied to several royal residences. In 1932 a Royal Appointment for Manufacturers of

32

Bedsteads and Bedding was granted by the King and has since been renewed by each successive monarch. After the Second World War, one of the company’s first orders was for a bedstead and mattress for George VI, for whom Staples had first made a bed in 1929. Several replicas were later ordered for the royal residences. During the past five years Staples has supplied royal households and procured natural fillings for its mattresses from organic British farms including Prince Charles’ Duchy Home Farm.

Consumers can design online with more than 5,000 options available and a choice of four arm designs

Maximum choice Thousands of options can be offered from only two Gainsborough sofabed display models Gainsborough has introduced a customised sofabed system, Sofa Bed Choice, which means retailers can offer more than 5,000 options from only two models on the shopfloor. ‘At the centre of the concept is the ability for the consumer to develop their own sofabed, either in-store, or from www.sofabedchoice.co.uk. Many leading car brands offer this customisable feature and we are delighted to extend the idea to sofabeds,’ says Jerry Yates, Gainsborough md. Starting with the basic seat cushion/ back cushion arrangement, the consumer can personalise their design by adding a variety of different options, such as a choice of arm shapes, colours,

36

Interiors Monthly May 2013

mechanisms, mattresses, feet and scatter cushions. Every Sofa Bed Choice configuration available can be developed from only two floor placings, these being the standard three-fold and the upgrade two-fold mechanisms. Key to the concept is that which ever arm shape is chosen from the four options available in conjunction with a particular mechanism and mattress, the comfort, feel and sit of the sofa will always remain consistent, he says. This means that the consumer can select a style without necessarily needing to sit on it to be assured that it will be correct. Free in-store POS is being offered to retailers and while consumers can create

their personal sofabed online, the website encourages them to contact Gainsborough for details of their nearest Sofa Bed Choice stockist. ‘Sofa Bed Choice sets out to further cement Gainsborough as the premium sofabed supplier to the UK market. With retail selling space at a premium, we recognise how important it is to offer retailers the maximum choice and sales from minimum floor placings. This concept allows the retailer to achieve this and at the same time offers the consumer immense choice of shape, colour, size and specification down to the last detail by way of a simple step by step process,’ adds Yates. Get in shape Carpenter’s zoned foam springs help improve airflow For memory foam products, airflow is a vital part of making sure the sleeper does not become too warm and uncomfortable. Carpenter UK’s fastgrowing consumer division has developed Spring Link to tackle the problem. Consisting of a series of interlinked foam springs, the springs are available in a selection of shapes, providing softer, more responsive support and enhancing active airflow through the product. The technology, for which Carpenter has applied for a patent, has been applied to toppers and pillows and offers the ultimate support of memory foam, featuring zoned foam springs, which adapt to the required pressure so it is not too hard or too soft. ‘We have worked hard to develop truly innovative technology which has been applied to a number of products, including mattresses,’ says Gillian Finch, Carpenter, consumer division national sales manager. ‘The great thing about the technology is that different shapes and sizes of links can be cut, allowing us to create bespoke Spring Link patterns to suit client requirements.’ There is also a range of temperature regulating accessories, including the Therapearl contour memory foam pillow, developed under the Sleep Better brand. It features gel bead technology within a removable and reusable pack that can be either frozen or microwaved to cool or heat the pillow depending on requirements. The Sleep Better zoned mattress topper with Coolmax fitted sheet incorporates a six zone grid profile across high density memory foam to offer a luxurious sleeping surface with the benefit of moisture management technology. ‘The new additions to the Sleep Better range are designed to meet the niche needs of the increasingly savvy shopper, looking for more than just a standard pillow or topper,’ says Finch. Covering all angles Caxton offers a variety of styles Companies can develop a reputation for being limited to one style of product, but Caxton’s latest designs – London and Bianca – means it has feet firmly in both the classic and modern camps. ‘Style and sophistication is what sets the new London bedroom collection apart. Featuring a luxurious Sleek Oak finish with a striking horizontal grain and vertical edge, the effect is elegant and contemporary and yet homely at the same time,’ says Mark Woodberry, WBH md. ‘Softly curved stainless steel finish handles help to create an air of refinement, while the comprehensive range of wardrobes and chests follows the tried and tested formula that has made its predecessors so successful,’ he says. The London collection offers mirrored, plain and sliding wardrobes with a practical choice of shelf, full-height and halfheight hanging space options, a range of chest sizes and a matching over-bed unit to create a built-in bedroom look. In contrast, the mirrored door and drawer fronts of the Bianca bedroom collection combine with high gloss surrounds – available in white or cappuccino – to create an air of decadent style. ‘As with our other modern bedroom collections – the upmarket high gloss Breeze and the cosmopolitan mirror and grey oak of Juliet – it’s the sheer quality of the finish and the surprisingly low price point that makes the Bianca bedroom so attractive,’ says Woodberry. ‘Add to this the benefits of buying British and an efficient and flexible UK manufacturing facility renowned for offering consistency of quality, quick delivery and award winning support.’ Visit: www.caxtonfurnitureonline.com

Divan inspiration Sweet Dreams offers a comprehensive selection of divans

Sark

Sweet Dreams has long been known for its extensive range of divans, with its eight collections all made at its premises in Lancashire, offering beds to suit most needs and budget. At the top end is the new Cool Gel Pocket Spring 1500. The divan combines cool gel with memory foam and a high count of pocket springs. It features Sweet Dreams’ Cool Gel Ultra Air System which allows air to flow between gel springs. Cool Gel is described as the softest solid on the planet and is the very latest in mattress fillings. Fifteen times cooler than memory foam, Cool Gel retains its elasticity and conforms to the body’s shape, making for cool, comfortable sleep. The mattress sports a knitted fabric top and a 3D mattress border, with the contemporary fabric used in the mattress echoed on the base. Cool Gel Pocket Spring 1500 comes in three sizes and in sprung edge or platform top. Storage options consist of two-drawer, fourdrawer and ottoman base. Beds from the Enchanted collection, featuring the company’s exclusive spring system, Sleepzone, have long been among its bestsellers. Sark is the flagship

Ulster’s Open Spaces Wellington Stripe

Earning their stripes Stripes are growing in popularity, but how long will the trend last? Among the near constant introduction of designs for carpet, stripes are becoming increasingly common. Is it the next big thing? ‘Stripes are not just for high traffic areas such as halls, stairways and landings,’ says Lesley Inman, Edel Telenzo UK operations manager. ‘People are using them throughout the house to give their floors more interest. They’re smart, modern yet practical. Stripes are the new patterns.’ Having a plain coordinate – in the Tube Collection, it is Centrepoint – and a shared colour bank also extends the appeal of stripes, providing a unifying factor throughout the home. ‘For 2013, the stripes are getting bolder – a bright, bold multistripe, Hammersmith is the latest addition to the Tube Collection. We’re also introducing more stripes into contract carpets – a jazzy stripe is being added to Lima,’ says Inman. Ulster Carpets’ Open Spaces (Laneve) Wellington Stripe, launched last summer, has rapidly climbed the sales ladder to become one of its top sellers. Composed of 100% New Zealand Wool, Wellington Stripe is available in five contemporary colourways which coordinate with the plain rib of Auckland and the textured two-tone rib of Queenstown. Cavalier Carpets now boasts Strata as part of its portfolio, a sister product to the Lupo range, with the same Brussels Weave look. Strata is made using 100% wool yarn in six high fashion colourways. Kelly Butler, Brintons design manager, says stripes are on trend, versatile, visually exciting and key for drawing in colour from around the room to complete a design scheme. ‘On a practical level, striped carpets are useful for connecting an interior theme throughout the home and altering room dimensions by giving the illusion of width and length to a space. This makes stripes a design statement staple that is impressively durable,’ she says. The choice for a striped carpet has traditionally been in hallways and stairwells, but using Brintons’ design tools, trend blogs and room solutions gives inspiration for all areas of the home from sitting rooms and dining spaces to bedrooms and studies. Brintons’ website provides original ideas for coordinating colours and designs, and the comprehensive At Home product brochure is full of inspirational photography. ‘If you’re struggling to imagine the impact of a striped carpet in a room, use the Brintons view in a room tool at www.brintons.co.uk to give a sense of scale to really bring the room to life,’ says Butler. ‘Ranges such as Pure Living and the eponymously titled Stripes Collection can be effortlessly twinned with a number of other plain and indeed differently patterned carpets. Given the flexibility this creates, we can only see striped carpets continuing to thrive. ‘Buying a carpet is usually a long-term investment so consumers will want a design that is luxurious, long-lasting and has the real wow factor. The design team has carefully curated a collection of chic stripes incorporating contemporary colours that complement many design styles and hues. Understanding interior design, the collections appeal to both traditional and

UPHOLSTERY

Cool movers The latest motion upholstery combines style and comfort

Once consumers would be willing to sacrifice a bit of comfort if the sofa looked good or would accept it wasn’t 100% their ideal style if it was fantastically comfortable. Today they demand both comfort and style. Corium Italia’s Brando has a new mechanism that allows contemporary high-base designs to become recliners. It is available from the HTL subsidiary in both standard and recliner (electric or manual) sofa options. Its sister model Mooving has an electric back cushion and comes with an optional top of the range Bowers & Wilkins hi-fi system, incorporated into the corner. The system can be operated by any Bluetooth device. ‘Mooving combines great looks and sublime comfort with the ultimate quality sound system,’ says Mark Flint, HTL UK md. Sitting Pretty’s Derwent, in common with the rest of its matching sofas, is available as either a manual handle recliner or as an electric recliner, both based on its Wallhugger movement. Two and three-seater options are available across all models and both seats recline on the two-seater models while the outer seats recline on the three-seaters. One step beyond Ranges have been expanded and the Parker Knoll brand has made an entrance in Milan Following the major launch of the Classic collection for Parker Knoll last year, the brand has continued to develop its models and fabrics and last month made its debut at ISalone in Milan. The Parker Knoll brand is well received both at home and abroad. ‘The name remains prominent among retailers and consumers alike as a furniture manufacturer whose core values have stemmed around quality, comfort and traditional British design ever since Frederick Parker created the business back in 1869,’ says Donna Bellingham, Parker Knoll brand director. This heritage and history has been a major attraction for new international customers and in recognition of this, it was invited to exhibit at ISalone. With a key location on the main walkway of the Classic hall, this provided a showcase for to present the collection to existing and potential customers worldwide. ‘This was a first for the brand, providing a fabulous opportunity to showcase the new British Classics collection, and creating an excellent springboard for the export development of the brand,’ she says. January saw the launch of the Wilson fabric collection across the Classic portfolio. The soft-handle chenille range features a contemporary check and stripe in lilacs and greens, which coordinates with both semi-plains, a luxury printed velvet and

the new Safari leather. There are also additions to the LifeStyle range. The contemporary lines of the new Oxley suite are combined with an exclusive powered footrest, available in the sofa and chair. The model is available in a wide range of fabrics and leathers from the LifeStyle collection. The new Hudson and Denver rise and recline chairs can be ordered as part of a suite or as standalone chairs, where express delivery is available. In addition, the new Penshurst Rise offers a unique and discreet powered seat, which can assist users to their feet. All of these products qualify for VAT exemption. ‘As a brand with a huge amount of legacy, Parker Knoll continues to play to our strengths, keeping a very respectful eye on the unique heritage while keeping a hopeful eye on the future. At a time when the industry is embracing fashion from the past Parker Knoll, once again, is already one step ahead,’ Bellingham adds. Parker Knoll, tel: 01773 604 121

VINYL

Changing with the times Latest updates to vinyl flooring

Beauflor, the vinyl and LVT brand of Beaulieu Flooring Solutions, Europe’s largest floorcovering manufacturing group, has extended its collection of cushioned vinyl products for residential and commercial applications. ‘The new Beauflor Ultragrip Contract range demonstrates the Beauflor ethos of combining strength, beauty and low maintenance into one cost-effective flooring solution where a contract rated vinyl is the only answer,’ says Michèle Bruynseels, Beauflor marketing manager. Another arrival into the Beauflor family is Ultragrip Variety, a fusion of traditional colours and designs combined with splashes of colour. ‘The top selling Ultragrip Style XL range has been revamped by retaining the bestsellers from the previous offer with new colour and design options added to reflect the changes in home decoration,’ Bruynseels adds. Lovers of minimalist design will find inspiration in the stark white Dots cushion floor from Avenue Floors. A new colourway in the award-winning Bubblegum & Liquorice collection, Dots has a geometric circular print that creates a subtle textured effect and coordinates with all-white decorating schemes. Sister brand Leoline’s Comfortz collection has an emphasis on delivering the timeless appeal of ceramic tile floors. It comprises 18 decors including Victorian-inspired Salsa. Featuring an intricate tile pattern, Salsa offers a touch of vintage charm for a shabby chic look. Comfortz is available in 2m, 3m and 4m widths and has a R10 slip restraint rating. RUGS

Back to nature Nani Marquina’s latest collection is all about nature Nettle. It’s a green prickly plant that you don’t want to touch or a fibre that makes for a great floor. For Spanish rug designer Nani Marquina the choice is obvious and it is one of four fibres that forms the core of her latest rug collection alongside Afghan wool, silk and jute.

After 25 years of designing rugs, her thinking is that true innovation lies precisely in creating rugs using what our environment provides us with, such as plants. She has a range of seven different rugs created using four manual techniques:

Affordable luxury QA Products is expanding its Luvanto retail network

Luvanto LVT was introduced by QA Products earlier this year, and according to the company it is enjoying steady growth through an increasing number of approved retail stockists. ‘Luvanto provides the perfect mix of stylish design, luxury and affordability. It looks and feels like high quality natural wood or stone flooring, with the attractive appearance and texture of these natural materials, but at a fraction of the cost,’ says Garry Atmore, QA Products marketing manager. It has a 25-year domestic warranty and a seven-year light commercial warranty. The wood planks and stone tiles are 2.5mm thick and feature a 0.5mm wear

layer, making them suitable for areas of heavy traffic. A 3D room design application will soon be available on www.luvanto.com, which will allow consumers to try out all the styles. After uploading a photograph of their living space they can lay the styles in situ until they find the right one to suit them. They will be referred to their nearest approved stockist to buy. The latest development to the range is a DIY underlay system. The 3mm thick underlay has a self-adhesive top layer to hold the planks or tiles, and can be looselaid in a domestic application. ‘As screeds and wet adhesives are not required, it will transform any traditional

dry back LVT into a truly DIY product. When installed with Luvanto, it will be covered by the 25-year warranty,’ says Atmore. ‘Flooring retailers will enjoy numerous benefits by becoming Luvanto stockists, most important, the substantial profit margins, which will be vigilantly protected by the pro-retail distribution network. Other benefits include outstanding sales support, ample stock availability and distribution anywhere in the UK next day. QA Products aims to have stockists in every town and city in the UK, who will be given retail exclusivity in their area,’ he adds. QA Products, tel: 0151 427 6000

Now for something different Heartlands offers an alternative to oak Heartlands’ Acacia wood ranges have received unprecedented sales since their introduction at Interiors UK in January, according to Saleem Shareef, Heartlands Furniture md. ‘At Heartlands we are always looking to introduce genuinely different and exciting new lines at every furniture exhibition. There is so much oak out there and all the products are beginning to look very similar, so the introduction of the Acacia range has provided much needed relief from the sea of oak colours,’ he says. Pricing is similar to Heartlands’ oak collections, with some ranges cheaper. There are seven ranges, including dining and occasional sets, sideboards and bookcases with traditional deep warm wood colours and lighter and softer contemporary colours. ‘Just by touching the Acacia wood you can feel the quality and robustness which is similar to the hardwood characteristics of oak. This makes it ideal

for very hardwearing furniture that is perfect for today’s busy lifestyles,’ he says. The popular Monaco range is handmade from solid dark Acacia Tropica and comes assembled in a chunky contemporary design. A more exclusive dark range, Martello, has been sandblasted to give a weathered look. ‘The uniqueness of the Martello range is truly outstanding,’ says Shareef. The Marseille and Decor ranges complete the dark wood range and are comprised of traditional furniture pieces with the same solid and heavy feel. In contrast, the Emily and Sahara ranges are sourced from the honey Acacia tree which has a much lighter colour but the same hardwood qualities. Emily is assembled while Sahara is flatpacked. Heartlands is offering a 10% discount on Acacia orders during May, quoting ACAHF0513 at the time of ordering. Heartlands, tel: 0121 565 6750

The business has also recently partnered with a new logistics company and can now guarantee deliveries within three working days of dispatch. ‘Since launching the initial range of TV cabinets, all with AV features such as remote friendly beam-through glass doors and built in airflow, we have highlighted a move to lifestyle modular furniture,’ says Gary Naylor, UKCF business development manager. Sending the right message Balterio says stores and shoppers are recognising its strengths Laminate flooring manufacturer Balterio is enjoying increased UK sales, which Franky Terrijn, Balterio marketing director, says is as a result of more retailers recognising its strengths. ‘We are seeing more retailers and consumers understand the Balterio message, which has seen more retailers become stockists and existing stockists are increasing sales,’ he says. The company offers several benefits including fast delivery throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland, the use of HDF Humidax core board; easy installation click systems such as CXP, DXP and PXP, and long lasting warranties. ‘All of our flooring is produced in one of the few vertically integrated production units so we have full access to raw materials and we control the complete supply chain. With everything 100% designed and produced in Belgium we are able to supply UK and Irish retailers very quickly and they know where everything comes from,’ Terrijn explains. He also cites the company’s many innovative structures and V-grooving, including 3D-Wood Effect, Chromezone, True-toNature, Micro V-groove, Random V-groove and its five plank formats. ‘With such a wide variety of options and technologies, the Balterio offer is second to none and more and more retailers are reaping the benefits of this,’ he adds. Authentic Models’ extensive accessory collection includes several timepieces. ‘With the Eye of Time the hero of our story is an anonymous watchmaker in Regency London, trying to combine a travel clock that needs to be small while easy to read. Little would he know that his spherical desk watch would be a highly collectable treasure,’ says Eric Hanson, Authentic Models sales manager. ‘In times of need the lenses doubled to read maps and light the safari-cooking fire. This 8cm diameter clock has been a bestseller for a few years, and despite numerous copies on the market, continues to thrive as a gift or a small desktop clock.’ The Aluminium Porthole Clock is a 15cm diameter wall clock (with working porthole hardware) in solid, hand-cast and polished aluminium casing. It combines a classic nautical colour with a more modern background than traditional brass. ‘Collectable because of their combined historical and practical value, hourglasses have had many specific uses,’ says Hanson. ‘Some glasses measured up to two hours, used at a time when church pews were designed by the Inquisition to torture the human back while ship’s hourglasses were calibrated to the half hours of the ship’s watch, and if the helmsman didn’t turn the glass too early it actually doubled in defining longitude. To appreciate the important symbolism of the hourglass, look at Renaissance still life paintings also called Vanitas, filled with symbolism and morals. They very often depict hourglasses.’ Visit: www.authenticmodels.com
