Founded as a traditional college serving pre-university students, the College has expanded its educational role and mission over the years. It has evolved into a traditional Higher Education establishment offering both undergraduate and postgraduate academic programmes at all levels. From the beginning, the College was intended to be unique, both in its educational approach and the opportunities it provides to its students. It offers a creative and flexible new approach to higher education, combining the strengths of both British and European styles and traditions. Its mission is to offer a quality of education equal to the best of the British system whilst incorporating the flexibility of the European modular credit system. It aims to create an environment which fosters learning and develops in its students enhanced levels of awareness and understanding amongst cultures. Graduate Program in Global Legal Practice Loyola Law School Los Angeles and Bologna, Italy The contemporary global economy has created a demand for lawyers who are skilled at managing different legal systems and are familiar with the international aspects of law practice. Law graduates discover that today's practice of law more frequently presents challenging international issues for which they may not be adequately prepared by their traditional legal education. This program provides an opportunity for law graduates to undertake specialized study in international and comparative law, to acquaint themselves with the legal traditions of other countries, and to help them understand international legal principles thereby enhancing their ability to anticipate and address a constantly changing legal landscape. This degree is an American LL.M. awarded by Loyola Law School Los Angeles, an ABA accredited law school. An American LL.M. is a valuable degree for foreign lawyers pursuing a career in international legal practice even if they never seek admission to a U.S. state bar. The world job market is rapidly changing and many law firms prefer to hire foreign attorneys who hold an American LL.M. and have strong English language skills. Many law firms and corporations are interested in hiring

lawyers from their home countries, who are familiar both with their own legal system and also with the American legal system. International students earn an American LL.M. while studying in Italy at the Universita di Bologna, the oldest university in the world. Located in northern Italy amidst cultural and artistic attractions, the Universita di Bologna "Alma Mater Studiorum" is the western world's oldest university, having been founded in 1088 AD. Students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Italian culture while enriching their professional preparation through the intellectual exchange between students and faculty from diverse legal backgrounds. Faculty consists of some of the finest scholars from both American and European law schools with expertise in a wide variety of legal issues. Internship opportunities in important law firms as well meetings with international law firms will be organized. To accommodate students engaged in full-time employment, courses in Bologna are offered on Fridays and Saturdays only. This gives international students the opportunity to study, travel around Italy, or take advantage of parttime internship opportunities in Bologna, Milan or Rome. The program must be completed within one year. American students earn an LLM while studying one semester in Los Angeles (Fall), at Loyola Law School, and one semester (Spring) in Bologna, at the Università degli Studi di Bologna. International students spend both these

semesters and complete all units in Bologna. To meet the degree requirements, they must complete 12 course units during the Fall semester. Usually, these are the courses offered in the Fall: Introduction to American Law (2 units), Legal Writing and Research (4 units), One First Year course (such as Contracts, Civil Procedure) (4 units), One Advanced American Law course (such as Constitutional Law, American Trial Process) (2 units). Classes offered in Bologna, which vary by semester and are subject to enrollment, usually include: International Business Transactions, International Civil Litigation, American and International Conflict of Law, International Commercial Arbitration, International Mergers and Acquisitions. Programmes offered 1-YEAR INTERNATIONAL LLM PROGRAM IN “AMERICAN AND INTERNATIONAL LEGAL PRACTICE” Application deadline Application deadline for graduates (or soon to be) of American law schools: March 27, 2009 Application deadline for foreign Law school graduates (or soon to be): March 10, 2009 Students are strongly encouraged to apply as early as possible, as the program can accommodate only a limited number of students and, moreover, admission is granted on a “first come, first served” basis to eligible and qualified students.

where businesses and public administration have to operate - and a project orientation, aiming to find concrete solutions to problems.

MIP was created 28 years ago out of a partnership between the Politecnico di Milano and some leading businesses and institutions operating in Italy, and: it has as its objective the Innovation in Business Management and Public Administration; it reports to the Management Engineering Department of the Politecnico, where most of its faculty come from and with which it forms the School of Management; by taking advantage of the cooperation between the academic elements, the businesses and the institutions, it wants to promote highlevel activities in the post-graduate and/or post-working experience training fields and to monitor the demands of qualified skills. Being part of the Politecnico, MIP pays particular attention to technology (particularly up-andcoming technology) because of the role it plays in innovation. However MIP itself does not deal with technology. From its engineering tradition it has inherited an analytical approach to problems - particularly important in the complex contexts 12

As well as the traditional products the MBA (including the International MBA which has been running for 5 years) and the Executive MBA MIP's portfolio presents a variety of new products that give an idea of the breadth of interests of the faculty. Some examples include: the Master in Private Equity (in association with Borsa Italiana), the Master in Engineering and Contracting and the Master in Transport and Logistics; the Executive Courses in Management of eBusiness and in Facility & Property Management (in collaboration with BEST); the Advanced Information Security Management Course (in collaboration with CEFRIEL); the Pegasus Program (sponsored by Assolombarda) aimed at businesses wanting to train high potential managers and customizable to companies' needs and the SUM School of Management for Universities and research Bodies,

In the last few years MIP has grown a lot thanks to strength coming from its enlarged faculty and its product portfolio. It continues to attract engineers, but it increasingly attracts graduates from other areas (principally Economics). We want MIP to keep growing and to remain at the forefront of new topics, in order to significantly contribute to our country's development.

Emporia State University was established in 1863 as the state's first school for training teachers. Although founded in 1863, the first term did not begin until February 15, 1865. The president of Kansas Normal School and its only teacher, Lyman Kellogg, taught 18 students on the second floor of the district school house. At the first commencement on June 28, 1867, Kellogg presented diplomas to Mary Jane Watson, a Civil War heroine, and to Ellen Plumb; the first, Judge Watson's daughter and the second from Senator Plumb's family. Kellogg saw to it that the Normal got off to an auspicious start before

For 19 years after its inception, KSN struggled not only with drought, renegade buffalo hunters and revengeful Indians, but with depression, doubt, jealousy of location, and extreme lack of appropriations. By the time ESU's fifth president, Albert R. Taylor, took charge, the school was in good condition with an enrollment of about 400, representing 43 Kansas counties and nine countries. Dr. Taylor took aggressive measures to increase enrollment such as refunding transportation mileage to students who lived in excess of 100 miles away. By 1889, KSN had become the largest school in the state and the largest normal school in the country. The school was first accredited in 1898, the same year it graduated its first black students. That same year, the Spanish American War interrupted the course of the school year. Over 35 percent of the first three Kansas regiments were school teacher, many of them from Normal. Since its founding, ESU has improved the lives of students from Kansas, throughout the U.S., and around the world. This semester, the student body comes from 100 Kansas counties, 45 States, and 55 countries. ESU's alumni base of more than 38,000 individuals lives in all 50 states and more than 70 countries. teach students how to properly cite legal documents. Citations teach student to pay attention to detail, which is a critical lawyering skill. Individualized workshops are important simply because most LL.M. programs will be composed of students from various countries. The research and writing center should be able to make suggestions to a student based on individual need. A student from Saudi Arabia will have different writing concerns than a student from Thailand, and LL.M. legal writing instructors should tailor their workshops accordingly. This helps when the writing instructor or writing center is approachable. The student should be able to ask the instructor questions about research and writing whenever there is one.

teaches them how to solve a specific legal problem, say intellectual property law or international business. Yet, this is only one side of the coin. LL.M. applicants should also look for a program with an excellent legal research and writing curriculum.

Every year, LL.M. applicants from various parts of the world struggle to make a complex decision: what is the best LL.M. program for me? This decision involves asking numerous complex questions about affordability, location, and a law school's curriculum. Most often, however, LL.M. applicants forget to ask the most important questions: (1) what do lawyers do, and (2) which program will teach me or help me to improve to do what lawyers do?

In weighing your options, you should look for LL.M. legal research and writing programs that have the following features: (1) electronic database research and citation training, (2) individualized writing workshops, (3) an approachable writing instructor or writing center, (4) teaches how to research and write legal briefs or memos, and (5) teaches how to research and write an academic legal research paper.

As a lawyer and having taught at the LL.M. program at Case Western Reserve University School of Law for the past five years, I often find that LL.M. applicants often do not know or forget what it is that lawyers really do. Lawyers solve problems and lawyers write about how to solve problems. Most LL.M. applicants may focus their search for a program that

Electronic database research training involves training in Lexis and Westlaw. An LL.M. writing program should also teach both the academic legal research paper and the legal brief. Most schools only teach one or the other. Yet, each is a different genre of legal writing that requires a different skill to master. The academic research paper teaches students how to be a scholar, which is an ongoing role tied to the responsibility of an attorney to engage in a dialogue about the law. The legal brief, on the other hand, teaches students how to make arguments, support arguments with relevant authorities, how to structure arguments, how to tell persuasive stories, and others. The legal brief is also the best method to train students to use the CRAC system, the standard rhetorical structure for U.S. legal writing, including law school exams. Before making a final decision, don't forget that lawyers are writers, and writing is perhaps the most important skill you must learn as a lawyer.

Communication is evolving at an accelerating pace. Digital technologies are transforming old ways of connecting, learning, sharing, influencing and governing. They are changing old ways of managing information and providing entertainment, while creating new opportunities for highly skilled media professionals. Northwestern University in Qatar offers two academic programs one in communication and one in journalism that prepare students to engage in the vital world of global media and communication in the Middle East and beyond.

Communication The School of Communication offers the bachelor of science in communication degree. The school has been educating students in the arts and sciences of communication for more than 125 years and offers top-ranked programs in media arts and technology. The program in communication prepares students for management and creative roles in communication and media industries, and for responsible civic participation in the proliferating world of global media. Our students are effective researchers and storytellers; skilled at information and interface design; and creators of new ideas, images, and communication technologies. Graduates may produce and write for television; work in film studios, radio stations, or talent agencies; manage digital information; design websites; or analyze audiences and the impact of media. They pursue careers in creative industries, advertising, corporations, non-profit organizations, cultural associations, and government agencies and ministries, among other places. Northwestern's highly skilled graduates are ready to exercise leadership and creative vision in producing and managing media industries and content across the global landscape.

Journalism The Medill School of Journalism offers the bachelor of science in journalism degree. With a distinguished history of training world-class journalists since 1921, Medill is the top-ranked journalism school in the United States. Northwestern prepares its journalism students to be successful professionals as well as wellrounded citizens. That preparation means students take only one-third of their classes in journalism and the remainder in the arts and sciences subjects such as literature, history, economics, and religion. This formula creates the very best journalists, the journalists for 22

which Medill and Northwestern are known. Even while still in college, Medill journalism students practice the craft of journalism they're learning by doing, reporting from across the city or across the world. While journalism students will master one of the media newspapers, magazines, television, the Internet, or whatever comes next before graduating, all students are instructed in all the media to ensure proficiency in the evolving world of journalism. Northwestern journalism graduates can be found on the top rungs of their professions throughout the world. Most journalism graduates pursue careers in journalism, but others succeed in public relations, advertising, education, law, and politics.

STUDENT ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE The Northwestern University in Qatar curricula integrate classroom lessons with real-world practical experience. In addition to studying news and media content, history, industries, audiences, and technologies, students create news reports, short films, computer animation, and other original work. The School of Communication's new program in media industries and technology enables students to develop intellectual and communication skills and to study communication industries and associated technologies in depth. Students learn the history and theory of media and communication, incorporating global perspectives, alongside hands-on media production. As students advance through the program they gain in-depth knowledge on media industries and develop advanced skills in creative technologies. The combination of analytic and creative course work provides a comprehensive understanding of the expressive capacities of the media and their place in society.

Outside the classroom, students can research and write original news articles, direct and produce student films, do student radio and TV broadcasts, write scripts, and attend film screenings. Students gain practical work experience through for-credit residencies or internships. The communication internship provides work opportunities in a variety of professional organizations, including production companies, television studios, media companies, and talent agencies. The journalism residency involves working full-time for three or four months in a professional capacity in a news organization in Doha or elsewhere. Students also have many opportunities to participate in a range of student activities and organizations including debate, fitness and sports groups, book clubs, student government, and human rights organizations, to name a few.

ADMISSIONS Admission to Northwestern University in Qatar is by application and is competitive. Application information and materials are available at www.qatar.northwestern.edu. Completed applications are due March 1, 2009. Students planning to apply for admission for fall 2009 should take two college admissions tests the TOEFL and either the ACT or SAT in a timely manner to ensure that scores will be available in time for review of applications in early March 2009.

Inquiries about the undergraduate programs should be sent by email to:

nu-qadmissions@northwestern.edu

Medill's journalism program teaches students how to source and write stories and report and edit across print and digital media platforms. It also explores journalism ethics, law, and professional practices as well as how to understand and connect with media audiences. Production work in both journalism and communication is supported by state-of-the-art technology, including high-definition cameras, editing suites, a film studio, a broadcast news studio, and a digital production lab. Hands-on experience with technology prepares students to move directly into professional capacities in news and media production.

AUA will prepare its students to achieve passing scores on the U.S. Medical Licensing Examinations and NCLEX and will also provide clinical clerkship opportunities in some of the best teaching hospitals in the U.S. We have affiliations with over 20 teaching hospitals where students will complete their clinical training -- and the number is constantly growing. These hospitals are located throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

The islands of Antigua and Barbuda are located in the Leeward Islands in the heart of the Caribbean. They are known for their many fine sandy beaches, tourism, international business and recreation. It has been said that there are 365 beaches and that many remain untouched and almost undiscovered. Antigua has become an important hub of the Eastern Caribbean. Antigua, pronounced (An-tee'ga) is the largest of the English-speaking Leeward Islands. The island of Antigua is approximately 108 square miles (280 sq. km.) The climate is tropical and mild. Temperatures range from 24째C to 30째C (86째F). August and September tend to be the hottest months while January and February, the coolest months. The capital, St. John's , is located on the northwest side of Antigua and is also the island's main seaport.

that would provide a comprehensive modern learning facility for students who aspire to become highly skilled, compassionate physicians and nurses, who plan to practice throughout Canada, the United States and the Caribbean region. This realization would have been hard to imagine in January 2004 when the school first opened its doors with a handful of students. Today, AUA is a growing and vibrant medical school with over 1,700 students, a brand new School of Nursing, and a brand new $60 million dollar campus (under construction). AUA's program is designed to make sure that students meet the necessary requirements of medical and nursing licensure in the United States. In addition, our curriculum ensures that students receive an education similar to the finest medical and nursing schools in the U.S. AUA is unique because it is the only hospitalintegrated medical school in the Caribbean with a medical education program based on U.S. school curriculum that incorporates hospital experience. Instead of just classroom instruction, students accompany attending physicians and nurses on rounds and have patient contact at the hospital in Antigua beginning in their first semester.

There are only a few states in the U.S. that require approval for international medical schools. Although less than 5 years old, the AUA program is proud to be one of a handful that has been approved by the State of New York, giving our students the option to complete their clinical training and residencies at NY Stateapproved hospitals. While primarily dedicated to teaching medicine, the University also feels a responsibility to direct resources to continuing research in areas that will directly impact human health. In concert with the Ministry of Health of Antigua and Barbuda, faculty and students have conducted research to help the local population improve their standard of health and living conditions. During the past three years, the Center for Tropical Diseases has conducted numerous research projects that contributed to improving the health of the local citizens and the Caribbean region in general. At AUA we continually strive to make a positive difference in the lives of the people around us. If you have the drive, the passion and the calling to heal the sick and find cures, then we invite you to join us and be a part of the solution.

been involved in a process of dynamic development, thus becoming a higher education institution at a European standard both due to its numerous partnerships with universities worldwide and the committed teaching staff, and the top equipment it provides.

Oradea City is situated in the North West of Romania and stretches on the both banks of the Crisul Repede river. The traditions of higher education in Oradea, metaphorically speaking, go back to time immemorial. This year (2008) there are 228 years since the inauguration of higher education in Oradea and 44 years of continuous higher education in Oradea. At the end of the 18th century, "a higher institution for philosophic teaching" is founded in Oradea in 1780, which was to become in 1788 the Faculty of Law, the oldest faculty not only within the Romanian borders but also in a vast region of Eastern Europe. After 1921, all the courses at the Law Faculty were taught in Romanian. In 1923, the foundation of two theological academies gave new dimensions to the academic life in Oradea. The Law Academy of Oradea, together with the two theological academies, was to make another step forward by integrating a faculty of letters, thus achieving the old desideratum of creating a University of Crisana in Oradea. But in 1934, under inauspicious circumstances and after 150 years of longstanding activity, the Law Faculty the academic nucleus of Oradea - is transferred to Cluj. After a thirty-year break in the activity of the Law Academy of Oradea, on 1 October 1963, an order of the Ministry of Education established in Oradea a 3-year Pedagogic Institute meant to do away with the scarcity of teachers in secondary education. The new institution of higher education began its activity with two faculties: Philology and Mathematics-Physics, and a year later other two faculties (History-Geography and Physical Education) were added. One by one, the new sections obtained an academic status until 1983, when due to a poor educational policy, the didactic and Humanist specialization diminished their activity, and from a prosperous institution of higher education, Oradea turned into an engineering

college affiliated to the Technical University of ClujNapoca. In May 1990 a decree of the Romanian Government established the Technical University of Oradea, later called the University of Oradea, and based on impressive traditions of academic life in the town. It was an act of scientific and cultural restoration long expected in the life of the Romanian society, a major gain of the people's Revolution of December 1989, one of the greatest Romanian achievements in Crisana after the Great Union on 1 December 1918. This is how the dream of several generations of scholars came true, clearly expressed by a historian of Oradea: "As regarding the future, the desire of all well-meant Romanians is to establish in Oradea a complete university, the lights of which will shine across the entire western border of Romania". Today, the University of Oradea is an integrated institution of higher education of this kind, comprising 18 faculties. The mission of the University of Oradea is to train and educate on a large scale both the students and also the high education graduates, as well as to approach certain domains of science and technology at high level. The structure of the University contains academic education, postgraduate education and scientific research. The University of Oradea expanded itself by developing new faculties and research teams, as well as by developing certain specializations inside the existing faculties. Inside the University of Oradea the education and research activity is developing in the area of natural and physical sciences, as well as in the area of social and human sciences, covering the following: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Sciences of Life, Agricultural Sciences, Medical Sciences, Technological Sciences, Economical Sciences, Geography, History, Juridical Sciences and Law, Linguistics, Pedagogy, Political Sciences, Psychology, Letters and Arts, Sociology, Philosophy. The educational process is based on the curricula for long term studies, short term studies, postgraduate's studies, master, doctoral studies and programs of continuous education and Distance Open Education. In the past years, the University of Oradea has er

The great number of students coming from abroad, who have chosen our university to complete their BA, MA, or doctoral studies, as well as the students from Oradea, who benefit from the Lifelong Learning Program (which includes subprograms such as: Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci, Grundtvig, and Jean Monnet) funded by the European Union support this opening. The University of Oradea adopted the European System of Transferable Credits, facilitating the didactical process. We all have to admit that there is no other financial or real estate investment more profitable for students. Education itself will always be the best long-term investment, as nothing is as precious as the knowledge gained during academic instruction. Foreign students who want to enroll in the University of Oradea must submit their 2 sets of documents with the application for admissions directly to the Department for International Relations, Office for Foreign Students. These documents are necessary for the Letter of Acceptance issued by the Ministry of Education and Research.

In June 2009 the British Accreditation th Council (BAC) will celebrate its 25 Anniversary as the principal non-EFL regulatory body for the independent further and higher education sector. At the time of the BAC's establishment there was no formal system of accreditation for the private sector which caused concern amongst bodies such as the British Council and UKCOSA (now the UK Council for International Student Affairs). As a result the BAC was formed to provide such a system, and through this accreditation process to improve and enhance the standards of independent further and higher educational institutions in the UK. BAC-accredited colleges in the UK now number 265, providing a wealth of academic programmes: vocational and professional qualifications; foundation courses for university entry; and externally validated degree courses. Institutions applying for accreditation with the BAC undergo a three-stage inspection process which, if successfully completed, results in accreditation being granted for four years. During this four year period institutions will also undergo an interim inspection and may be subjected to a spot-check if circumstances, such as a change in ownership, leadership or premises, require it. The areas of assessment covered in an inspection leading to full, four year accreditation include Premises and Health & Safety, Management and Staffing, Student Welfare, Management of Quality, and Teaching and Learning. In order to help institutions be successful in their initial application for accreditation and to develop their provision subsequently, BAC offers a series of seminars covering the application process in general and some of the more specific areas of assessment such as Health & Safety. Whilst BAC's focus has always been primarily the UK private education sector, in recent years the Council's work has become progressively more international in its scope. In 2000 the decision was taken to extend eligibility for accreditation to certain institutions 42

outside the UK, namely those who offer UK higher education qualifications or institutions which are the overseas branch(es) of a UK-based college. Allowing some international institutions to apply for BAC accreditation was in no way a relaxation of the accreditation process, as international institutions are still subjected to the same rigorous criteria and inspection procedures which apply within the UK. International institutions accredited by the BAC now number 29 and can be found throughout the European Union, and in such diverse countries as Pakistan, India, and the United Arab Emirates. The BAC's international activities also include fostering close links with other national accrediting bodies and representing the UK independent sector within the International Network of Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE). On the international front the BAC's work has recently taken on a new role after the Council was named by the UK Border Agency as one of only four agencies in the UK “approved for the purposes of accrediting private education providers involved in the recruitment of international students under the new points based system. Although this has meant greater responsibility for the Council in practice the accreditation and inspection procedures have remained largely unchanged, and the underlying goal of ensuring and promoting quality in the UK private education sector still prevails. The recent overhaul of the UK immigration system has, however, shown an increased need for BAC colleges to communicate with each other in order to keep abreast of rapid developments in immigration policy and all other matters affecting the private education sector. As a result an association of BAC-accredited colleges was formed earlier this year under the title of Study UK. As the name suggests, Study UK will exist in close partnership with English UK which is the membership association for the UK's British Council accredited English

language schools. The formation of Study UK is another link in the close relationship between BAC and the British Council and the accreditation schemes of both agencies. Although BAC does not accredit institutions which are solely or predominantly providers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), it does inspect colleges which offer EFL programmes alongside non-EFL provision. Institutions which are inspected by the British Council's Accreditation UK scheme can therefore apply for accreditation with the BAC under a top-up arrangement which recognises that there are several areas of overlap within the respective inspection regimes. Through links with bodies such as the British Council, the BAC provides its institutions with access to a worldwide network of education providers and a range of promotional opportunities. In terms of future developments the BAC is working to strengthen its international profile whilst ensuring that the primary role of ensuring quality in the UK private education sector is never neglected. In order for the UK to retain its position as a major player in the worldwide education market its private education sector must continue to be closely monitored whilst being allowed to flourish as providers of education for a range of students, whether international or UK based, for whom university may not be the right option. The BAC will remain at the forefront of the UK private education sector during this period of challenge and opportunity and will continue to take forward the reputation of UK education on a global stage.
