The most interesting thing that I have found ‌is that development in this country is better than that of the First World countries I have compared it to. This is very much reflected in the University as well, says Mahmoudou Mahmoudou from Cameroon, who is currently completing his Master's in Developmental Studies. A driven, research agenda The NMMU is concerned with relevant research that contributes to the growth and development in industry and society. Taking into account its location, research at the university focuses on: environmental and natural resource management; culture, communication and language; leadership, governance and democracy; educational development in support of quality teaching; health and wellness; economic and business development with a focus on job creation and entrepreneurship; product and materials, infrastructure and process development for industry and manufacturing. The Office for International Education facilitates and provides community service opportunities to international students, which allows them to interact with a variety of local communities. The Office for International Education strives to be a 'home away from home' for all international students, but it also assists students with accommodation, admissions, finances, and study permits. Being a relatively small institution in a 'small city', assists the Office in creating this 'home away from home' feeling and students can feel confident that they will easily settle into their new environment and life in sunny South Africa.

In 2009 the British Accreditation Council (BAC) celebrates its 25th Anniversary as the principal non-EFL regulatory body for the independent further and higher education sector. At the time of the BAC's establishment there was no formal system of accreditation for the private sector which caused concern amongst bodies such as the British Council and UKCOSA (now the UK Council for International Student Affairs). As a result, BAC was formed to provide such a system, and through this accreditation process to improve and enhance the standards of independent further and higher educational institutions in the UK. BAC-accredited colleges in the UK now number more than 330, providing a wealth of academic programmes: vocational and professional qualifications; foundation courses for university entry; and externally validated degree courses. Institutions applying for accreditation with BAC undergo a three-stage inspection process which, if successfully completed, results in accreditation being granted for four years. During this four-year period institutions will also undergo an interim inspection and may be subjected to a spot-check if circumstances, such as a change in ownership, leadership or premises, require it. The areas of assessment covered in an inspection leading to full, four-year accreditation include Premises and Health & Safety, Management and Staffing, Student Welfare, Management of Quality, and Teaching and Learning. In order to help institutions be successful in their initial application for accreditation and to develop their provision subsequently, BAC offers a series of seminars covering the application process in general and some of the more specific areas of assessment such as Health & Safety. Whilst BAC's focus has always been primarily the UK private education sector, in recent years the Council's work has become progressively more international in its scope. In 2000 the decision was taken to extend eligibility
36
for accreditation to certain institutions outside the UK, namely those who offer UK higher education qualifications or institutions which are the overseas branch(es) of a UKbased college. Allowing some international institutions to apply for BAC accreditation was in no way a relaxation of the accreditation process, as international institutions are still subjected to the same rigorous criteria and inspection procedures which apply within the UK. International institutions accredited by BAC now number 29 and can be found throughout the European Union, and in such diverse countries as Pakistan, India, and the United Arab Emirates. BAC's international activities also include fostering close links with other national accrediting bodies and representing the UK independent sector within the International Network of Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE). On the international front BAC's work has recently taken on a new role after the Council was named by the UK Border Agency as one of only four agencies in the UK “approved for the purposes of accrediting private education providers involved in the recruitment of international students under the new points based system. Although this has meant greater responsibility for BAC, in practice the accreditation and inspection procedures have remained largely unchanged, and the underlying goal of ensuring and promoting quality in the UK private education sector still prevails. The recent overhaul of the UK immigration system has, however, highlighted an increasing need for BAC-accredited colleges to communicate with each other in order to keep abreast of rapid developments in immigration policy and all other matters affecting the private education sector. As a result an association of BAC-accredited colleges was formed last year under the banner of Study UK. As the name suggests, Study UK will exist in close partnership with
English UK which is the membership association for the UK's British Council accredited English language schools. The formation of Study UK is another link in the close relationship between BAC and the British Council and the accreditation schemes of both agencies. Although BAC does not accredit institutions which are solely or predominantly providers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), it does inspect colleges which offer EFL programmes alongside non-EFL provision. Institutions which are inspected by the British Council's Accreditation UK scheme can therefore apply for accreditation with the BAC under a top-up arrangement which recognises that there are several areas of overlap within the respective inspection regimes. Through links with bodies such as the British Council, the BAC provides its institutions with access to a worldwide network of education providers and a range of promotional opportunities. In terms of future developments the BAC is working to strengthen its international profile whilst ensuring that the primary role of ensuring quality in the UK private education sector is never neglected. In order for the UK to retain its position as a major player in the worldwide education market its private education sector must continue to be closely monitored whilst being allowed to flourish as providers of education for a range of students, whether international or UK based, for whom university may not be the right option. BAC will remain at the forefront of the UK private education sector during this period of challenge and opportunity and will continue to take forward the reputation of UK education on a global stage.

Holistic medicine is a system of health care that combines many modalities and models of healthcare such as allopathic medicine, surgery, osteopathy, naturopathy, nutrition, homeopathy, herbal medicine, energy medicine, psychoemotional modalities of healing and much more. The goal of these combined therapies is to help the patient or client achieve optimal physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual health. Holistic Medicine needs to look at the whole person and how they interact with their environment and the people around them. It needs diagnostic and therapeutic tools to examine and balance the physical, nutritional, environmental, psychological, emotional, social, spiritual and etheric levels of health. It therefore encompasses all modalities of diagnosis and treatment as stated above, including allopathic medicine using drugs and surgery if there are no other safer alternatives. The Holistic medicine practitioner is very focused on education and encouraging people to take responsibility for lifestyle changes to achieve balance and well-being. Holistic Medicine will therefore encompass all diagnostic and therapeutic modalities it is not polemic towards allopathic medicine which also plays an important role in optimizing health and has its place in the Holistic Model. The ultimate goal of the Professional Diploma in Holistic Medicine from the DaVinci College of Holistic Medicine is to provide the practitioner with the tools, in enough depth, for them to competently practice Holistic Medicine to help optimize the health of their patients. The course is built on therapeutic protocols developed by many practitioners around the world. These therapeutic protocols have been tested in 38
clinical settings around the world. These protocols alone have more value to a potentially successful practitioner than the cost of the courses themselves!
Distance learning makes it possible for people juggling the demands of work and family to reach their educational goals without sacrificing their jobs or time with their families. Online learners find real value in saving time not having to commute to class‌ and the associated cost savings! Additional benefits include accessing coursework from anywhere at any time - all one needs is a laptop, even though many of the courses have manuals and books that one can carry anywhere. In addition, many of the courses have downloadable in pdf files that one can have on the laptop server and read while travelling - it is possible to accumulate a whole library of material to read where ever you are, at a time that is convenient to you. Distance learning offers the flexibility to complete much of the course work according to your own schedule. You might choose to read a chapter during a lunch break or take a quiz after the kids are in bed. Whatever schedule you choose, there are still deadlines and timelines associated with Distance learning. The ability to manage time is vitally important to meet the demands of distance education.
If your ambition is to study Holistic Medicine in order to help people with anything from headaches to cancer, then you have come to the right place.
Medicine has tried to accomplish a real holistic framework of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, including:

3. Green Technology 4. Nano-technology 5. CO2 Management The focus is in line with Petronas demands and at the same time, it reaffirms UTP's expertise. Most of the research held involved the collaboration of local and foreign universities. UTP obtains funds for the research work from public and industry grants, thereby allowing it to grow on a trajectory plane.
UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) was established on 10 January 1997 to produce more skilled engineering and technology manpower, particularly for the petroleum and gas industry.
environment, universities are increasingly providing unique specialisations to ensure personnel and students stay abreast of the current development in research.
Within a short span of time, UTP has managed to earn various awards and accreditations.
Therefore, in 2002, as part of its efforts to produce top-level scientists, UTP has drawn up the Research Masterplan that outline the strategic research initiatives for the university to embark on. The master plan is to identify the industries that need expertise in the respective fields.
Meanwhile, the local and foreign-based corporate and industrial firms have given preference to UTP graduates in their employment drive. As a centre that focuses on innovation and creativity, UTP has produced thousands of Bachelor degree holders. In line with the aspiration of the university to become a prominent research university, our focus is on developing the postgraduate program and produce more research trained graduates through masters and doctoral programs. POST-GRADUATE PROGRAMME According to the Director of UTP's Post-Graduate Studies, Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Noh Karsiti, the university initiated its Masters of Science programme in 1999 and the first batch to graduate from this programme was in 2005. Since then, UTP has produced 154 Masters graduates in various disciplines and 4 PhD graduates in Chemical and Electrical Engineering respectively. “UTP provides first-class facilities and also receives good support and assistance in terms of research grants from internal resources as well as the government and industrial sector," Dr Mohd Noh said here recently.
Nine fields were identified that formed the basis for research and development at the UTP. They are: 1. Reservoir Engineering 2. Offshore Exploration 3. Oil Field Gas Treatment and Utilisation 4. Fuel Combustion 5. Novel Engine Development and Control 6. Intelligent Building 7. Smart Card Technology 8. System Optimisation 9. Application of Intelligent IT System. To provide a focus on the research initiatives, UTP has recently identified 5 major application areas to be designated as Mission Oriented Research directions. These areas are expected to drive the university towards recognition as a prominent research university in Oil & Gas. These are: 1. Enhanced Oil Recovery 2. Deepwater Technology
UTP was also moving towards adding more postgraduate programmes in the coming academic sessions in its quest to become a research university by the year 2010, where 20 per cent of its students population comprises post-graduate students. At the moment, UTP offers programmes as below: MSc by Coursework & Dissertation n Petroleum Engineering (in collaboration with Herriot-Watt University, United Kingdom) n Petroleum Geoscience (in collaboration with Institut Francais du Petrole, France) n Process Integration (in collaboration with University of Manchester, United Kingdom) n Asset Management n Advance Process Control n Electronic System Engineering MSc by Research n Chemical Engineering n Petroleum Engineering n Petroleum Geoscience n Civil Engineering n Mechanical Engineering n Electrical & Electronic Engineering n Information Technology PhD by Research n Chemical Engineering n Petroleum Engineering n Petroleum Geoscience n Civil Engineering n Mechanical Engineering n Electrical & Electronic Engineering n Information Technology
He said via UTP's post-graduate programme, the researchers are given the freedom to pick the subject of their study based on their interest apart from having the opportunity to directly collaborate with the parties that provide their research grants. Under the graduate assistanceship scheme, those who undergo UTP's Masters programmes are employed as tutors by the university. The university would bear the tutor's course fees and the person is also entitled to a monthly allowance. MASTER PLAN With the rapid changes in technology and 52

Features of an Excellent Legal Research and Writing Program Rafael Dean Brown, Assistant Adjunct Professor of Law Foreign Graduate LL.M. Programs Case Western Reserve University School of Law
Every year, LL.M. applicants from various parts of the world struggle to make a complex decision: what is the best LL.M. program for me? This decision involves asking numerous complex questions about affordability, location, and a law school's curriculum. Most often, however, LL.M. applicants forget to ask the most important questions: (1) what do lawyers do, and (2) which program will teach me or help me to improve to do what lawyers do? As a lawyer and having taught at the LL.M. program at Case Western Reserve University School of Law for the past five years, I often find that LL.M. applicants often do not know or forget what it is that lawyers really do. Lawyers solve problems and lawyers write about how to solve problems. Most LL.M. applicants may focus their search for a program that teaches them how to solve a specific legal problem, say intellectual property law or international business. Yet, this is only one side of the coin. LL.M.

applicants should also look for a program with an excellent legal research and writing curriculum. In weighing your options, you should look for LL.M. legal research and writing programs that have the following features: (1) electronic database research and citation training, (2) individualized writing workshops, (3) an approachable writing instructor or writing center, (4) teaches how to research and write legal briefs or memos, and (5) teaches how to research and write an academic legal research paper. Electronic database research training involves training in Lexis and Westlaw. Almost all law schools have an agreement with both Lexis and Westlaw for the companies to provide free research training for their students at the law school and free access to both online research databases while the student is in law school. The program should also teach students how to properly cite legal documents. Citations teach student to pay attention to detail, which is a critical lawyering skill.
Individualized workshops are important simply because most LL.M. programs will be composed of students from various countries. The research and writing center should be able to make suggestions to a student based on individual need. A student from Saudi Arabia will have different writing concerns than a student from Thailand, and LL.M. legal writing instructors should tailor their workshops accordingly. This helps when the writing instructor or writing center is approachable. The student should be able to ask the instructor questions about research and writing whenever there is one. An LL.M. writing program should also teach both the academic legal research paper and the legal brief. Most schools only teach one or the other. Yet, each is a different genre of legal writing that requires a different skill to master. The academic research paper teaches students how to be a scholar, which is an ongoing role tied to the responsibility of an attorney to engage in a dialogue about the law. The legal brief, on the other hand, teaches students how to make arguments, support arguments with relevant authorities, how to structure arguments, how to tell persuasive stories, and others. The legal brief is also the best method to train students to use the CRAC system, the standard rhetorical structure for U.S. legal writing, including law school exams. Before making a final decision, don't forget that lawyers are writers, and writing is perhaps the most important skill you must learn as a lawyer.
