In this one day course participants will learn about current status of aqua feed globally, principles and introduction to extrusion technology, selection of raw material and their properties for making aqua feed, grinding of raw material for making good quality pellet, extrusion of aqua feed, twin screw extruders to process aqua feed, optimizing aqua feed quality, and latest technology for the ingredients, vacuum coating of aqua feed and finished product analysis. This course is organized by the International aqua feed magazine and Dr. Mian N. Riaz, world leader in extrusion technology from Texas A&M University.

Aquaculture is one of the fastest developing sector in the world, now accounting for nearly 50 percent of the world’s fish supply. Currently 100% of floating feed and about 60% of sinking feed is made by extrusion technology. Traditionally, singlescrew extruders are widely used for producing the feeds for low protein adult fishes such as tilapia, catfish, grass carp, etc. Now we see twin screw making some special and ultra-fine feed. Basic extrusion technology has been around for a long time. It has been used in one form or another in the food and feed industries. There has been no revolutionary or significant development in extruder design. As the aquaculture sector grows, there is increasing aquafeed demand in the market. Thereby aquafeed making business is also the promising industry in the world.

Ms Tuti Tan is the Circulations and Events Manager for Perendale Publishers Limited with responsibility for International Aquafeed and Milling and Grain magazines and the International Milling an Grain Directory. She has been working at Perendale for over 10 years and has helped to establish a number of conferences for both the aquatic and milling sectors. She is a trustee of the charities Aquaculture without Frontiers and a trustee of the charity Milling4Life and the director of the National Aquaculture Centre in the UK. Ms Tan is from Indonesia and was educated in Singapore before become an engineer working in structural building design. Ms Tan is also a highly regarded piano teacher.

Dr. Mian N. Riaz is the Director of the Process Engineering R&D Center (formally Food Protein R&D Center), Head of Extrusion Technology Program, and Professor in the Nutrition and Food Science Department at Texas A&M University, USA. He has published 5 books, 22 chapters and more than 100 papers on extrusion and other related topics. Dr. Riaz is a frequent speaker at international and national conferences and meetings and so far he has delivered more than 300 presentations in 55 countries.

Tim Hartter is a project manager for Corporate Project Service, a division of Wenger. Tim has over 43 years of experience in the extrusion industry, all of which have been with Wenger. He was engaged in Wenger equipment design for over 30 years and was active in the design and development of the Wenger single screw extruder design. He was the lead designer for the Wenger twin screw extruder line for many years including the first twin screw extruder models designed and manufactured by Wenger. Since 2008, he has been designing 2D and 3D plant layout and design solutions for new (greenfield) aquatic feed, animal food and human food industries worldwide and providing Order of Magnitude Cost Estimates (OMCE) for the building and equipment, return on Investment (ROI) and total cost of ownership (TCO) for client projects. He is a certified “FSPCA Preventive Controls for Human Food” and “applying HACCP Principles” recipient and recognized as a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) for industry. Tim has worked closely together with industry partners, regulatory agencies, and numerous universities to validate the extrusion process as a viable preventive controls step for pathogens and is coauthor of several peer reviewed articles that are published in the Journal of Food Projection.

Dr. Mian N. Arthur vom Hofe is working as Sales and product Manager at CPM Europe BV, a California Pellet Mill subsidiary in Zaandam - the Netherlands for more than 27 years and has an extensive experience in all aspects concerning the pelleting process. Representing the company for pelleting and particle size reduction equipment he has been already involved in the front line since the nineties when supplying specialized equipment for hygienic feed production processes. Arthur vom Hofe can be found frequently as a speaker at short courses and conferences on subjects concerning pelleting and particle size reduction, and hopes to share his passion for pelleting technology with you, when informing you about the latest developments in the hygienic feed pelleting process. Arthur vom Hofe holds an Engineering Degree from the “Hoge School Den Hague”, is Dutch by nationality, 52 years of age and married having two daughters.

Nicola Tallarico graduated as an agriculture engineer at the University of Bologna in 1995 and completed the Ph.D in zootechnical science at University of Milan in 2001. After his university degree he continued to cooperate with the Dept. of Poultry Science of the University of Bologna. He followed different projects on the influence of the different sources of fats on the quality of functional foods till 2003. In 2003, he joined Eurhema, an Italian company specialized in encapsulation technologies, as technical-sales manager. In 2010 Eurhema (nowadays named Kemin Cavriago) was included in the Kemin family and Nicola moved to Belgium as Technical Service Manager driving the allocation of the different encapsulated products to the relative Kemin’s platform. After that, Nicola acts as Technical Service Manager and later as Product Manager, and his new tasks were to support Kemin SAFE platform, a Kemin program designed to guarantee the safety of feed controlling the microorganisms, mycotoxins and oxidation challenges. Since beginning of 2017 Nicola becomes Business Managers Aquaculture for the EMENA region. In this new position, one main task of Nicola is to transfer Kemin knowledges to control previous mentioned challenges also to the aqua feed sector.

Thomas holds a degree in marine engineering and technology management. He joined ANDRITZ Feed & Biofuel in 2015, before joining ANDRITZ Thomas has been working within the process industry since 2008, as Installation & Commissioning Engineer, Technical Advisor and Sales Manager, before being hired as Global Application & Sales Manager at ANDRITZ Feed & Biofuel, with focus on extrusion technology.

Alain BRISSET is a food scientist who has been working with CLEXTRAL SAS since 1981. He first started promoting the Clextral’s equipment and production lines in different areas worldwide (including Europe, Midle- east, Central Europe). The strong demand in Fish feed and Pet Food equipment have lead him to integrate specific practical knowledge into these particular quick improving markets. From 2003 to 2006 he moved to the Marketing Department before joining the R&D team in 2007. Some years ago, Alain BRISSET started to coordinate a long term Research Program (EPT™), as well as complementary activities with the legal department and IP protection. He also provides internal and external supports in the animal feed area.

Peter Raeven has 12 years experience in development and realisation of projects as a project manager for feed, aqua feed and petfood. Working at Dinnissen for 18 years as account manager in feed, aqua feed and petfood division. Specialist in developing major projects with added value focussing on mixing, grinding and coating with liquid and powder systems.

Per Lidén is global product manager for DA benchtop NIR analyzers at Perten Instruments. Perten Instruments is a leading supplier of analytical equipment serving customers on over 100 countries globally. Mr Lidén has 10 years experience of NIR spectroscopy and its usage in the agriculture and food industries. He has a Master of Science degree in Engineering Biology and Business Administration at the Linköping University in Sweden. During his career he has worked with leading feed and food producers in multiple countries in the applications and usage of NIR instrumentation to improve production efficiency and product quality.
