Welcome I

t's an exciting time to be involved in biomarine resources. Companies and individuals have been quick to realise the potential our oceans offer and this is not confined to aquaculture alone.

Marine resources and marine raw materials are being used in products and processes ranging from food to feed, cosmetics to pharmaceuticals and from fertiliser to energy

and beyond. It's a wide ranging group of interests with many overlapping activities and one which is growing rapidly.

In light of these developments, Perendale Publishers Ltd recognises the need for a regularly updated industry handbook covering the whole spectrum of biomarine resources. This is what we have aimed for with the biomarine resources directory – to publish it in print annually and provide it online and for mobile access 24/7. The biomarine resources directory supports the BioMarine Business Convention.

tarted in 2008, BioMarine is the only international platform with a track record of business, innovation and investment in marine bio resources. Eighty-four percent of BioMarine participants are CEOs and top executives: this is the key for achieving deals, partnerships and acquisitions and scouting for new ventures.

The 2013 BioMarine Business Convention in Halifax will focus on aquaculture, aquafeed, marine bioresources, marine biotechnologies and marine natural products. Key representatives of the Canadian government will be present, as will a large representation of CEOs from the bio resources sector in Canada. Official delegations led by ministers from Ireland, Monaco, Norway and Portugal will attend, as well as a US delegation led by Max T Holtzman,

senior advisor of the US Secretary of Agriculture and Acting Deputy Undersecretary of Marketing and Regulatory Programs.

In Halifax, we will announce the official launch of the BioMarine International Clusters Association (BICA), to champion marine bioresources and their sustainable and innovative utilization

The BioMarine initiative is picking up momentum. The BioMarine think-tank will be organised in Sydney, Australia in June 2014. In October 2014, the annual BioMarine Business Convention will take place in Cascais, Portugal. In 2015, the spring think-tank will settle in Monaco, and the annual BioMarine Business Convention will be hosted in Wilmington, North Carolina, USA. Max T Holtzman, acting deputy under secretary MRP (Marketing and Regulatory Programs) and senior advisor to the secretary, United States Department of Agriculture, leads the US delegation and he will participate in the debate on aquaculture. Holtzman advises the US secretary of agriculture in a number of areas including trade, biotechnology, public- private partnerships, international food security and aquaculture. Holtzman is also the US chairman of the North American Biotechnology Initiative, which includes the United States, Canada and Mexico. Francisco Gomes, executive manager, Aqua, Novus International Inc. USA, will chair. Arne Benjaminsen, acting secretary general, Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, Norway will travel to Halifax with a large delegation of Norwegian CEOs and investment blue funds. Manuel Pinto de Abreu, Portuguese secretary of state for the sea, will lead the Portuguese delegation and will carry the flag for 2014 when BioMarine moves to Cascais, Portugal. “The ocean means business now with sustainable exploitation strategies for marine bioresources,” says Pierre Erwes, founder and chairman, BioMarine. The BioMarine Business Convention is a new and unique source of economic development, one where the value chains and the business models are still under development. Jacqueline Allan, senior policy analyst (Biotechnology and Nanotechnology), OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) will present the OECD Report on Blue Biotech in Halifax - the report issued following the 2012 Vancouver meeting. The BioMarine initiative is picking up momentum: the BioMarine think-tank will be organised in Sydney, Australia in June 2014 on the occasion of ISAP and in October 2014 the annual BioMarine Business Convention will take place in Cascais, Portugal. In 2015, the spring think- tank will settle in Monaco while the annual BioMarine Business Convention will be hosted in Wilmington, North Carolina (USA). In 2016, we plan to organize our think-tank in the Middle East and Oslo, Norway, will welcome the BioMarine Business Convention. The 2013 BioMarine Business Convention is open to the media.
