New Early Childhood Center 1155 Page Street, Opening Fall 2014 Lower School Enhancement 150 Oak Street, Summer 2014

French American International School Guided by the principles of academic rigor and diversity, the French American International School offers programs of study in French and English to prepare its graduates for a world in which the ability to think critically and to communicate across cultures is of paramount importance. The French American International School has been a world leader in bilingual education for over fifty years. Every day, we challenge our students to think critically and creatively, act independently and responsibly, question the apparent, and communicate across cultural boundaries. We bring the world into our classrooms even as we send students around the globe.

Benefits of a Bilingual Immersion Education Fluency in two languages–and culture –not only prepares children for a complex and interconnected world, it drives heightened powers of problem solving, focus, creative thinking and communication – all vital skills for adulthood. The most powerful effects result from immersion in early childhood. That is why our immersion program begins with children as early as age three.

Early Childhood Center (ECC) Making the Environment “The Third Teacher” A vibrant and flexible environment promotes curiosity and discovery. Critical to a child’s cognitive development, a school’s design facilitates education through play and experiential learning. Simultaneously, it nurtures values and respectful relationships. In the fall of 2014, an exciting new child-centered school for our youngest students, Pre-K3, Pre-K4 and Kindergarten, will open at 1155 Page Street in San Francisco. Influenced by how children learn best, the Early Childhood Center (ECC) design will enable us to deliver our globally recognized French immersion program in a creative, safe and nurturing environment. The ECC’s 10,000 square feet will include 9 classrooms for 180 children. Classrooms will be bathed in natural light, with indoor-outdoor ventilation and radiant heat. The goals for this green facility are to have flexible, accessible and open spaces, as well as be Gold LEED-certified and Zero Net Energy (ZNE). The entire campus is designed to promote the children’s positive interactions with their world and with those around them. A single, secure entrance opens to an indoor/outdoor campus of classrooms, two play yards, and a large multi-purpose room

designed to invite in the outdoors. The classrooms and play yards face the interior of the campus, creating a safe and natural barrier from the street. The outdoor play spaces will offer children room to roam, explore and hide in mini-courtyards, promoting independence and confidence. Two organic edible gardens fed by stored rainwater make a connection to the environment and stimulate intellectual curiosity.

Endowment

Main Campus Renewal

This would allow for approximately $400,000 to be transferred ($175,000 was transferred in 2012) to the school’s annual operating budget which includes supporting current students and teachers, keeping up with advances in technology and science, financial aid, educational programs and providing an overall dynamic and diverse environment.

150 Oak Street With Pre-K3, Pre-K4 and Kindergarten classes moved to their new campus in August 2014, approximately 7,000 square feet of space will become available at 150 Oak Street. The space will be redesigned to bring some of the same benefits of the Early Childhood Center design – flexible, innovative, communityoriented, and collaborative spaces – into our main campus. This includes areas such as a science lab, a media/tech center and new spaces where students and teachers bring learning to life and all members of our community can meet and interact. The fundraising goal for the Early Childhood Center and the 150 Oak Street improvements is $7 million.

The French American International School endowment contributes operating revenue for the school. To help support operating expenses for the new Early Childhood Center (ECC), we need to grow the school’s endowment from $5.6 million to $10 million.
