September 2013
Number 1
The gift of a bilingual education with a global view for your child... Dear Andrew, Here is the first edition of our monthly newsletter for families who have initiated an electronic Admission inquiry for September 2014.
Website
"It is an empirical fact that bilingual immersion will affect nothing less than the 'wetwiring' of your child's brain! "
There are a wealth of nuanced opportunities in store for your child at French American. It is impossible to reveal all during a campus tour, the Open House or even the most systematic of website explorations. The intention of the monthly newsletter is to supplement the set-piece events of the application process and to maintain regular communication as the season unfolds. Andrew Brown Dean of Admission

A monumental decision Choosing an independent school for your child is a monumental decision.
Placing an adorable preschooler on the first rung of the academic ladder is a life-changing rite of passage. No doubt you will begin with some self-reflection on your own educational experiences. You may find yourself examining where you really stand on the pros and cons of single-sex schooling or the importance of choosing a school with a religious affiliation or an attractive campus. Other issues will be more slippery and will require a little more soul searching. Will your own child thrive in a school with a reputation for high academic standards? Is there a trade-off between high achievement, creativity and self-esteem? How important is it that your child can learn alongside children from different family backgrounds? What is the culture of parent involvement in the school? Who will be the peer group of children and parents now and into the teenage years? Is your desire for a high-end, prestigious school or, perhaps, a very progressive school, more about your own aspirations than what is really best for your child? Finding the right match is in the subjunctive mode. It is about hopes and
dreams and imagining the future. It begs a variety of questions... What kind of world will your child live in? What kind of education is the best wager for an uncertain, rapidly changing and increasingly interconnected world? Will the "tried and trusted" kind of schooling that you may have experienced yourself be adequate as the 21st century continues to unfold?
The bilingual advantage
The cognitive, developmental and life-changing advantages of bilingualism manifest themselves only when the child reaches a high level of competence in both languages. We call this balanced bilingualism. Click here for a compelling video and recent news articles outlining the bilingual advantage.
