I take this platform with such a privilege and honor to welcome you to the 2020 International Virtual Conference on Interdisciplinary Research in Higher Education (IVCIRHE 2020) with a theme “Research for Collective Survival in the New Environment.” The call for synergistic collaboration intertwined with technology is timely, relevant, and needed to survive as we embrace new normal. The globe at this very moment has evolved into a village. If you are not in then, you live in a primitive world, thereby making you to be extraneous and to become extinct from the highly competitive world of academia. The higher education institutions worldwide need to accentuate the indispensable role of research to become significant to time demands. Now is an opportune moment to reconnect and start advancing on repackaging or reshaping learning in conjunction with the industries’ robust expectations and global needs. This idea becomes a reality if all of us will work collectively.

Finally, I congratulate all of you for responding to the International Association of Scholarly Publishers’ call. Your response shows your commitment and passion for upholding excellence in all three pillars of education - Instruction, Research, and Community Extension. As my final message, I wish you the very best in all your aspirations to serve your respective community and become expert or authority in your field of expertise.

NIÑO MIRANDA DECENORIO, PhD Senior Vice-President Bath Spa University Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates

Theme: “Research for Collective Survival in the New Normal Environment.”

Warmest greetings from Singapore Institute of Management, Singapore!

MESSAGE

I would like to commend the International Association of Scholarly Publishers, Editors and Reviewers, Inc. (IASPER) for organizing the International Virtual Conference on Interdisciplinary Research in Higher Education (IVCIRHE 2020) on October 1-2, 2020. As a scholarly body committed with its mission in advancing the professional expertise of scholars, reviewers, editors and publishers, IASPER has been providing a meaningful platform for thought-leaders, academic researchers and practitioners to explore critical issues of interdisciplinary advancement and innovation through research presentation and publication.

IVCIRHE 2020 • October 1-2, 2020

It is my great pleasure to welcome the participants and presenters to IASPER’s IVCIRHE 2020. The conference theme this year is “Research for Collective Survival in the New Normal Environment.” This conference is conducted online in light of the COVID-19 pandemic we face as a global community. The disruption caused by the pandemic affects all sectors of society. COVID-19 brings us problems and challenges that no single discipline is able to address. Many of the most pressing problems society faces – such as health-care, climate change, poverty – are multifaceted and complex, and effective solutions require the collaboration and integration of many different disciplinary expertise and insights. The impact of the pandemic on society has opened a window of opportunity in research towards tackling societal challenges that requires an interdisciplinary approach. Furthermore, a focus has been placed on collaboration in these contexts. Interdisciplinary collaboration has become more prominent as the rapid growth of knowledge and increasing specialization makes it difficult for any one individual to comprehend and integrate all the disciplinary knowledge and insights to particular complex problems. We will see more interdisciplinary research that deploys collaborative approaches and attains collective outcomes in the future. This year’s 2-day conference provides ample opportunities for discussions and exchange of information and ideas among participants all over the world. Indeed, IVCIRHE 2020 is the result of great collaboration among the organizer and members to make it a successful conference. I would like to express my support to all the participants, presenters as well as the organizer of IVCIRHE 2020. I strongly believe that we need to collaborate and innovate in order to survive in the new normal. In closing, I wish everyone a successful and fruitful conference. Thank you. DR TIMOTHY CHAN, PhD, FCPA(Australia), FSCS(Singapore) Director, Academic Division Singapore Institute of Management

“Research for Collective Survival in the New Normal Environment.” Welcome to the International Virtual Conference on Interdisciplinary Research in Higher Education (IVCIRHE 2020)! The theme of the conference, “Research for Collective Survival in the New Normal Environment” is certainly timely as mankind all over the world is experiencing a huge challenge caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The new normal environment which has occurred as the result of the virus involves many changes at all levels and facets of our lives leading to significant adjustments in human interactions and behaviour in society. The pandemic has devastated the global economy, intensified geopolitical tensions and upended lives causing a crisis like no other, and despite drastic controls and tough restrictions, cases seem to have soared again. The global death toll has just passed one million and the World Health Organization has warned the deaths could even double to two million without more global collective action. As long as the world has not found a cure or a vaccine for the virus, the new normal looks set to remain for a very long time. Governments and education bodies need to start preparing for the long-term impact Covid-19 will have on today’s society. But what exactly is the “new normal”? What are the implications of this new normal to the society? What are its impacts? How have we been coping with it? Would herd immunity be part of our new normal? And how long until we return to the “old normal”?

In higher education too, the wheels of change have been set in motion. The pandemic has made online learning the new normal, regardless of a learner’s age and goals, providing more flexibility, access to expertise, and value for money. But there are also adverse impacts. It has been reported that given that college and university faculty hastily moved courses online without much support, online learning is being done poorly in many quarters of the United States. It’s consequently getting a bad reputation at many campuses. We might still be at an early stage to review and evaluate the effectiveness, efficiency or quality of the strategies and plans that have been and are being implemented in response to the pandemic. However, this in no way obviates the need for discussions and research to be conducted especially with respect to our collective survival in the new normal environment. I hope this conference will bring intellectual ideas together so we as a global community can move forward with insight and informed understanding in how we can collectively survive in the new normal.

MESSAGE

A recent study has demonstrated that the new normal has resulted in de-globalization, institutional change, government participation in, and interference with business, socio-political movements, rapid communications, digital crime, and disruptive innovations. It has further been found that the shift to Work From Home risks exacerbating pre-existing inequalities in the labour market. Covid-19 has shown us how vulnerable society is.

On behalf of the Mountain Province State Polytechnic College, I am sending my warmest greetings to the participants and organizers of the INTERNATIONAL VIRTUAL CONFERENCE ON INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH IN HIGHER EDUCATION. Recognizing that research is central to sustainable development paths, we view this occasion as an auspicious gathering for our researchers and other academicians. During this period where nations around the world are experiencing the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic, studies that seek to alleviate the challenging situations of societies and contribute to collective survival gain significant attention. This sharing of studies is an effective platform for knowledge dissemination and for the application of solutions at the national and local levels as we ascertain our role in the progressive transformation of our society.

MESSAGE

May we draw novel ideas that are valuable both to the academia and our nations. Let this also be an opportunity to renew ties and forge new friendships among ourselves.

PLENARY SPEECH 1 The Key to Quality Education: Syllabus Design for Teaching English Program IDA GAURAN-TUDY, Ph.D. Cor Jesu College Philippines

Syllabus is an indispensable material to ensure quality education. This paper aims to develop competencies of participants in syllabus design in teaching English. It covers the following areas, namely, syllabus design as a vital component of language curriculum, types of language teaching syllabi, importance of syllabi to language teachers, and the roles and challenges they experience in designing. A discussion follows on syllabus design considerations particularly for Teaching English Program and further elucidation is provided through a sample syllabus. For effective implementation of the designed syllabus, other components of the language program are in placed such as qualification, advance training, and publication of faculty, and necessary resources like professional books, journals, and ICT based resources. Instructional Types, Humor, and Application in Pronunciation DAWN YONALLY, Ph.D.

International Education Consultant Texas, USA When teaching foreign language—especially English as a second language— second language teachers are demanded to be able to create better instructional plan. Therefore, they have to know the instructional types. Besides that, making fun in the classroom is also a good strategy to make the students engaged. However, pronunciation that is globally understandable is also important. This paper attempts to demonstrate and impart instructional theory, application, and demonstration for teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL). Using the instructional theory, application, and demonstration presented in this paper, second language teachers are able to improve their teaching strategies and methods as well. Based on some conceptual frameworks and theories implemented with the instructional types, this paper recommend that the foreign language teachers should be able to make a model of pronunciation since it is key to ESL. Without understanding of spoken language, language acquisition has limited application. Therefore, ESL teachers should demonstrate their good model of the language they are teaching. Keywords: Language Teaching, ESL, instructional types, and humor BIONOTE Dr. Dawn Yonally is an American Phd, who has worked at all levels. She has taught, researched, presented at conferences in the United States and internationally (Malaysia, Ecuador, Japan, Russia, and China). KEYNOTE SPEECH 3 Schools of Linguistics and Syllabus Design for EOP and EAP DJUWARI, Ph.D.

STIE Perbanas Surabaya Indonesia

There have been two schools of linguistics which we have learned so far: The North American School of Linguistics and the Sydney School of Linguistics. The former focuses on the written texts while the latter on the spoken language in the communities, very specifically on the professional discourse communities. This paper highlights the two thoughts underpinning their approaches and the implementation not only in doing the research but very specifically on designing the syllabus and developing the materials. Based on the theoretical basis of the two types of discourse communities, this paper provides a framework of how to design a syllabus with different approaches of the two schools of linguistics: the North American school of Linguistics and the Sydney School of Linguistics. It can be generalized that any syllabus can be designed using the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) on either English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or English for Occupational Purposes (EOP). When the syllabus designer is concerned with the North American School of Linguistics, the syllabus would be EAP but when the syllabus designer is concerned with the Sydney School of Linguistics, the syllabus design would be EOP. Keywords: Schools of Linguistics, Discourse Communities, ESP, EOP, EAP BIONOTE Dr. Djuwari is the Associate Professor at STIE Perbanas Surabaya since 1989. He is currently the Head of Language Laboratory. SYNTHESIS OF ABSTRACTS

MR. RUSSEL B. OBSIOMA

Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan Philippines

W

e have never expected it, but the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed us in the precipice of a NEW NORMAL environment. A new reality to realign personal and professional goals, restructure established institutions, reshape well-formed habits and traditional practices, and revisit universally accepted notions, policies and laws. In educational institutions all over the world, blended learning has been embraced by schools, universities and colleges combining synchronous and asynchronous modalities in the delivery of education as a response to the pandemic. From the physical four walls of the classroom to the digital interface of Google Meet and Zoom meetings, the situation presents such a unique dichotomy: an opportunity for innovation and changes inclined towards digitalization of education and on the flip side, challenges on technological competencies of teachers, equity gaps, lack of information technology infrastructures, and issues in data security, among others. In research, researchers continue to create innovative and novel ways for the digitalization of the research process. We see a significant paradigm shift in research goals and methods; physical survey questionnaires are now being replaced by Google Forms and focus groups discussions and interviews are done online through Zoom and Skype. At such a dizzying pace in a very unique time, it is truly a “necessity is the mother of invention” moment for science. The International Association of Scholarly Publishers, Editors, & Reviewers, Inc. recognizes these opportunities and challenges as it holds the International Virtual Conference on Interdisciplinary Research in Higher Education on October 2-3, 2020 through Zoom Teleconferencing. Themed “Research for Collective Survival in the New Normal Environment,” this virtual conference is the first of its kind for the organization and highlights research and development in the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic. Studies involving the utilization of bible-related concepts in teaching Mathematics, managing Mathematics instruction in small schools in the Province of Batangas, Philippines, development and pre-use evaluation of instructional materials in undergraduate Animal Science courses, indirect feedback for syntactic errors delivered through collaborative negotiation and group-chat negotiation, and study on project educational video assisted reciprocal and strategic reading provide research findings that could aid in the improvement of teaching of Mathematics, animal sciences courses, writing, and pupils’ word recognition and comprehension. Institutional research outputs are also well-represented in this conference. The study on the resource capability and competitive achievements of pilot schools in Southern Philippines, the issues, perceptions, and challenges of amalgamation in higher education institutions, level of implementation of the vision, mission, goals and objectives of a state university, internationalization practices of four Philippine higher education institutions, implementation of student affairs services of a state university, and service quality dimensions and student satisfaction of frontline services in a higher education institution provide insights and information in the improvement of the respective institutions.

The research outputs on the entrepreneurial management of the Department of Labor and Employment Integrated Livelihood Program, financial decision-making skills of managers of small and medium enterprises, strategic human resource planning of commercial establishments, governance, Maqashid Sharia and their effect on Islamic Social Reporting, and citizen satisfaction on the delivery of services of the local government unit provide research results in aid of program and project development, feasibility study, and interventions that could be of use in the improvement of the department, organization, small and medium enterprise, business, Islamic commercial banks and local government units, among others. The study on research environment and research orientations of senior high schools revealed that the implementation of research environments in terms of administrative initiatives and research capability enhancement was high. The findings of the study on research culture among basic education teachers likewise saw a positive attitude towards research in the basic education teachers. Both studies also mirror results that found moderate extent in terms of support in the research skills-capability of teachers. Design and development research projects will also be presented in this virtual conference. Applications such as the android –based augmented reality tourist guide and optimized campus virtual tour guide based on A* algorithm are digital platforms that will be beneficial to tourists and students. The studies on pilot sensing device stimulator and design and fabrication of Arduino-based microcontroller development training board proved to be great instructional models: the pilot sensing device stimulator being beneficial in understanding the uses and functions of the different sensors and the training board being useful in enhancing students’ knowledge in microcontroller programming and interfacing. Studies on the effects of different agricultural waste-derived bio-char on soil chemical properties under soil paddy conditions, the agronomic traits and yield performance of the white corn varieties intercropped with different legumes, establishment of Dragon Fruit plantation, and spectrum of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) most beneficial to radish are some of the studies under Agriculture, the science or practice of farming, that are well-represented in this conference. The studies on the rape profile in Mountain Province, Philippines, women’s involvement in disaster risk reduction and management, and compliance to gynecological diagnostic examinations contribute to a growing number of gender and development studies that promote gender equality and women’s health, and advocate against violence of women and their children. The literature review on the implementation science of pediatric palliative care in lower-middle income countries in Southeast Asia, the literary analysis in the deconstruction of themes in ‘Grand Theft Auto IV’, and textual analysis and sociological-cultural inquiries in building ethnic identity through hybridity and anaphoric tropes in select Igorot Ethno music are welcome addition in this conference saturated by descriptive-quantitative studies. These studies and more that will be presented in this two-day International Virtual Conference on Interdisciplinary Research in Higher Education prove that research continues to mold and bring the landscapes of knowledge generation, innovation and technology to new heights even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Self- efficacy is a belief in someone’s own capability in accomplishing a certain task. And most of the related studies concluded that having a high self- efficacy has something to do with high performance at work, or it has something to do with an individuals’ work output/ production. However, some other literature revealed that it has not something to do with individuals’ performance. On the other side, English language is the required medium of instruction yet the most feared language. This study was conducted to investigate the self-efficacy towards the English Proficiency Test of the teacher applicants from the Division of Romblon. This study used a descriptive- correlation method employing a self- made questionnaire conducted through an online form to assess the Self- Efficacy status towards English Proficiency among applicants in 2018. Findings showed that respondents have Low Self- efficacy status towards English Proficiency Test. It was concluded that among the levels of English Proficiency, respondents who are Proficient have a Very Low Self- efficacy compared to other levels that reached the Low level. MANIAGO https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8603-3094 jdmaniago@up.edu.ph University of the Philippines Manila Metro Manila, Philippines There is an ongoing development in the pediatric palliative care (PPC) program in Southeast Asia (SEA). However, the implementation process has not been clearly understood among lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) in this region. The purpose of this paper is to review and synthesize research about the implementation process of 7 identified LMICs in the SEA: Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Lao PDR, Philippines, TimorLeste, and Vietnam. An integrative review utilizing Whittemore and Knafi’s five-stage process was employed. Electronic searches of CINAHL, Web of Science, ProQuest, and Google Scholar (no year restriction) were conducted. From 7,599 articles retrieved, only 11 met the eligibility criteria. Each article was appraised for methodological quality (QualSyst tool and AACODS checklist), and constant comparison methods were used. Two overarching themes emerged in this review, the “lighthouse” and “the buoy”. The “lighthouse” which pertains to evidence-based interventions (EBIs) and the emerging PPC standards of practice and the “buoy” refers to PPC challenges and implementation strategies. Understanding the implementation science of PPC among LMICs in the SEA region addresses the gap between idealism and realism. It provides reliable information in the development of strategic work plans that will improve the implementation process and promote the translation of EBIs into practice significant to the quality of pediatric patient outcomes. This is true in Mountain Province. The study revealed that among the 10 municipalities of Mountain Province, for four years 2014-2017, Paracelis consistently holds the highest reported cases of rape. Most of the victims’ ranges from ages 20 and below and perpetrators ranges from ages 11-30 years old. As revealed by the data obtained in the Provincial Police District, rape takes place between 8:00 in the morning to 8:00 in the evening. This study highlights three factors that contributes to the commission of rape which are: experience, curiosity, and availability of the victims. Based from the interviews, there are situations where persons can be vulnerable to rape. These situations can be the influence of social media, bad exposure, and absence of adult supervision. The observance of agreeing to settle within the barangay level is being practiced because of the influence of culture. Further, an institutional mechanism should be strongly established in the barangay level. The era of research-based education is now the most effective way of improving the services of schools. The study aimed to evaluate the implementation of research environments and research orientations of teachers among Public High Schools in South Philippines using the descriptive- predictive research design to randomly select 277 respondents employing mean, Pearson r Correlation, and Regressions analysis. Findings revealed that the implementation of research environments in terms of administrative initiatives and research capability enhancement of teacher–researchers was high. But in terms of financial support and incentives to research, and teachers teaching loads and research undertakings was moderate. Further, the implementation of research orientation in terms of teachers’ expertise in research designs and scientific writing competence was moderate, but the teacher-researcher sustained interest was high. The correlational analysis between the implementation of research environments and research orientations of teachers revealed a significant relationship in all aspects, which indicates the null hypothesis is rejected. The best predictors that emerged on the implementation of research environments were administrative initiatives and research capability enhancement of teacher–researchers. Hence, the teachers have struggled due to a lack of competence in conducting and utilizing research as basis for planning and formulating interventions to the identified problems in teaching learning process. Indirect Feedback for Syntactic Errors Delivered through Collaborative Negotiation and Group-Chat Mediation SANDRA B. AGUIRRE http://orcid.org/0000-0001-8099-0000-7899 sbaguirre@yahoo.com Mountain Province State Polytechnic College Bontoc, Mountain Province To improve the communication skills of the students is the primary concern of a language teacher. Writing is the hardest skill among the four communication skills a student should develop so the objective of this study is directed to the enhancement of the students’ writing skill. It aimed to know whether collaborative negotiation or group-chat mediation is better in delivering indirect feedback on the written outputs of students. With quantitative method, data gathered from the written outputs of the students were analyzed. Results show that collaborative negotiation is a better way of delivering indirect feedback compared to group-chat mediation. This implies that if a teacher really wants a student to improve on his/her writing skill, the former should have a personal interaction with the latter instead of conveying the comments through the use of technology in social media such as group- chat. Project Educational-Video Assisted Reciprocal and Strategic Reading (Eares): An Intervention Program to Address Difficulties In Word Recognition and Comprehension Among Grade 6 Pupils in Tuhian Elementary School, Philippines ALLAN A. TALAIN https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8181-035X allan.talain@deped.gov.ph Department of Education Division of Quezon Many learners struggle in mastering reading skills. Hence, this study aimed to test the effectiveness of Project EARES in addressing difficulties in word recognition and comprehension among Grade 6 learners in Tuhian Elementary School, Philippines. Experimental research design was utilized in this undertaking. Specifically, a posttest-only controlled group design was employed to demonstrate causality between the intervention and an outcome. The respondents involved 40 Grade 6 learners who comprised the control and experimental groups, formed through random assignment. In connection, the reading performance of the respondents in both groups was assessed using the standardized passages from the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) at two points of the experimental study: one was before the treatment (pretest) and the other one was after the treatment (posttest). Meanwhile, arithmetic mean and independent sample t-test were used to analyze and interpret the gathered data. Since the t-values of 0.33 and 0.19 respectively are lesser than the critical value of 2.2024 at α = 0.05, the null hypothesis was accepted. Thus, there was no significant difference between the pretest scores of two (2) groups regarding word recognition and comprehension. On the contrary, there was a significant difference between the posttest scores of both groups in terms of word recognition and comprehension since the t-values of 2.57 and 5.14 respectively are more significant than the critical value of 2.024 at α = 0.05. It means that the use of Project EARES in the treatment group is more effective than the traditional way of reading instruction which was utilized in the control group. Furthermore, the utilization of Project EARES as a reading intervention program that provides explicit instruction in metacognitive strategy within mixed- ability cooperative learning group is a useful tool in addressing difficulties in word recognition and comprehension resulting to the improvement of reading performance.
