Psychological Warfare as a Self-Defense Tactic Bohdi Sanders, Ph.D.

Sun Tzu, in his timeless classic, The Art of War, wrote, “Make your enemy think that your normal force is extraordinary, and your extraordinary is your normal.” This is a great quote to meditate on and let the implications sink into your spirit. Part of warfare, whether you are talking about military tactics or the art of selfdefense, is attacking the mind of your enemy, and this is exactly what Sun Tzu is telling you to do here. This is psychological warfare at its best. If your opponent thinks that your normal force is extraordinary, he wonders, in the back of his mind, just how devastating you will be if you kick it up a notch.

This not only causes him to fear your abilities, but it also causes him to doubt his ability to actually defeat you. Once he starts doubting himself, or his skills, your enemy is well on his way to being defeated. Thomas Cleary translated several ancient samurai writings in his book, Training the Samurai Mind, and he tells us that the key to the warrior’s heart is maintaining courage.

It is extremely hard for your enemy to maintain his courage when he truly believes that he cannot defeat you. Buddha taught, “Your greatest weapon is your enemy ’ s mind.” Once you know the power of your mind and your thoughts, you can clearly see the truth in this statement. Thoughts are extremely powerful. They can awaken one ’ s valor and courage, and likewise, they can destroy one ’ s courage and will to fight.

If you can get inside your enemy ’ s mind, you can plant the seeds of fear, and those seeds will grow and take on a life of their own. As the fear grows in his mind, his thoughts will continually focus on why he cannot beat you and why he should not attack you. Once this happens, your enemy ’ s fear will defeat him and you will probably never have to use your physical skills to defeat him. This is psychological warfare at its best.

The use of psychological warfare has been around for thousands of years, but most people don't think about using it to aid.

WARRIOR WISDOM

Them with their enemies, opponents, or predators. In today's "gotcha" culture, psychological warfare is a better choice than physical confrontation.

We frequently see in the news where someone has used their self-defense skills to save themselves or others from a violent attacker, only to be arrested and charged with a bogus crime. As Sun Tzu taught, "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the greatest of skills."

As the 15th century English poet George Herbert stated, "One sword keeps another in the sheath," and this is very true. But have you ever thought about why this is true? If your enemy or a predator knows you are carrying a weapon and are proficient in the use of that weapon, it is much more likely that he will not want to attack you. He will not want to take a chance of being hurt or even losing his life. When the predator knows you are armed, he will choose a less prepared target; when your enemy knows you are armed and ready, that keeps him in check. Like the old Samurai maxim goes, reputation often spills less blood.

Use psychological warfare to your advantage. Seed your enemy's mind with doubt and fear. Cause him to doubt his own skills while at the same time seeing you as a resolute enemy whom he cannot beat. Make him think that your normal force is extraordinary and that your best is simply undefeatable. Allow his own doubt to defeat him, and in doing so, you will achieve what Sun Tzu called the greatest of skills. Warrior up!

FINDING BALANCE

In life, finding balance and overcoming adversity are crucial for personal growth and fulfillment. This article explores the journey of the Black Dragons, a legendary organization that embodies the principles of camaraderie, purpose, and teamwork. Through their experiences, we discover the importance of having a support system and the power of unity in achieving success.

The Black Dragons, led by their patriarch, have a unique bond that sets them apart from other organizations. Membership is not something one can apply for; it is an honor bestowed upon individuals who have been asked and vouched for by the patriarch. This exclusivity creates a sense of loyalty and commitment among its members, fostering a strong support system.

Every man needs more than a single purpose in life. For the Black Dragons, their purpose lies in the fight for principles and the struggle for a meaningful existence. This shared purpose gives them the strength to overcome challenges and stay true to their values. It is through this purpose that they find fulfillment and avoid being consumed by the hardships they face.

In the journey towards balance and prosperity, companionship plays a vital role. The protagonist, crowned king of Kumi, found his queen in Sheila Kim. Their genuine camaraderie and shared struggles make their journey worthwhile. Together, they support each other, lift each other up, and find joy in their partnership.

13

It is a testament to the power of teamwork and the importance of having someone to share life's triumphs and tribulations. The Black Dragons owe their success to the guidance and wisdom of their legendary mentors.

These mentors, the heads of the family before them, have prepared them for their roles and instilled the values that define the organization. Their mentorship ensures that the legacy of the Black Dragons continues to thrive, passing on the torch to future generations.

Balance and overcoming adversity are essential for personal growth and fulfillment. The Black Dragons exemplify the power of unity, purpose, and companionship in achieving success. Their story serves as a reminder that having a support system and staying true to one's values is crucial in navigating life's challenges. By embracing these principles, we can find joy, prosperity, and meaningful victories in our own lives.

SELF-DEFENSE MOVESFOR WOMEN

In today's society, violence against women continues to be a pressing issue that affects not only the United States but also the entire world As I delved into the topic of self-defense techniques for women, I realized the need to shed light on the alarming statistics and the harsh reality of violence against women. It is crucial for each individual to take responsibility for their own safety and well-being, as relying solely on others for protection is not a reliable solution.

Researching the prevalence of violence against women opened my eyes to the exponential growth of this crime. It is a problem that knows no boundaries and affects women from all walks of life. By understanding the true extent of this issue, we can better comprehend the urgency for self-defense measures and personal safety awareness.

While it may be comforting to believe in the concept of a knight in shining armor coming to the rescue, the reality is often different. Relying solely on others for protection is not a reliable method, especially in cases of violence against women. Each individual must take charge of their own safety and equip themselves with self-defense techniques. By doing so, women can empower themselves and increase their chances of escaping dangerous situations.

Violence against women continues to be a growing concern in our society. It is essential for women to recognize the need for self-defense measures and take control of their own safety. By being aware of the reality of violence against women and taking responsibility for our well-being, we can empower ourselves and work towards a safer future. Remember, each individual has the power to make a difference and protect themselves from harm.

Sexual violence is a grave issue that affects individuals worldwide, regardless of their relationship to the perpetrator. This article sheds light on the prevalence of sexual violence, emphasizing the urgent need for action to address this global crisis.

The reality is often overlooked today The all-too-common cancel culture would rather protest the violence of violence against women instead of helping women empower themselves against such an attack if were to occur. We cannot afford to turn our heads away and simply wish the violence away. We must address the issue head on.

With that ideology in mind, I have taken this time out to recognize several techniques that are often taught by qualified instructors.

I must lead with a brash statement that I am sure may lead to several hostile objections. That said I will still stand by my opinion that in general most women do not possess the physical strength or physiology to punch a man with a close fist and do any real physical damage

That said, I have known several women that are tough as nails and would actually do severe damage to either sex if they were to hit them.

Being aware of your surroundings is crucial in maintaining personal safety. By staying alert and vigilant, we can identify potential threats and take appropriate action. Additionally, taking responsibility for our own self-defense means being proactive in seeking out self-defense training and resources. This proactive approach ensures that we are prepared to protect ourselves when faced with danger

One such person that comes to mind is the amazing Kathy Long. As 5 timesWomen’s Full Contact Kickboxing Champion.

I have been on a receiving end of her attack and would not wish that kind of damage on my worst enemy.

However, she has developed those powerful strikes and techniques over four decades of training. This would be something that an average woman has not yet developed in life in general.

With that in mind the techniques presented hereafter are for the lay person to utilize in an unrehearsed or unprecedented attack on the street.

The elbow is a formidable weapon when it comes to self-defense. By utilizing the strength and power of the elbow, women can deliver a swift and impactful strike to an attacker's vulnerable areas, such as the face or torso. This technique can incapacitate the assailant and create an opportunity to escape.

The palm heel strike is another effective technique that can be used to fend off an attacker. By striking with the base of the palm, women can target sensitive areas such as the nose, chin, or throat.

3. Devastating Knee Strike: A knee strike to an attacker's groin area can be a highly effective self-defense technique. The vulnerability of this area makes it an ideal target for women to incapacitate their assailants. A well-executed knee strike can cause immense pain and create an opportunity to escape.

4. Cat Scratching Claw: Striking an attacker's face with a cat scratching claw technique can be a powerful defensive tool. By targeting the eyes and face, women can disorient and temporarily blind their assailants.

ted lucaylucay REMEMBERING A TRUE LEGEND

28
Photographs provided by Richard Lameroux, Chuck Gonzaga, Allen Woodman

In the realm of martial arts, there are few names that resonate as strongly as Guro Ted Lucaylucay. With a career spanning nearly five decades, he left an indelible mark on the world of combat training. From his families boxing skills in the Hawaiian Islands to his training in the backyard of Dan inosanto, Lucaylucay's legacy is one of versatility and dedication. In this article, we delve into the life and impact of this true martial arts legend.

Born in Kauai, Hawaii, Ted Lucaylucay began his journey in martial arts at a young age. He studied various disciplines, including boxing, Eskrima, and Judo, honing his skills and developing a deep understanding of combat.

Ted’s father Lucky being credited as the originator of Panantukan Filipino boxing. However, Lucky himself believed that it was all Kali, a traditional Southeast Asian martial art that focused on blade weapons.

Although Ted originally started in the tradiitional Japanese martial art of Judo he soon branched out his learning and opened his mind to new ideas and concepts. He studied some Wing Chun and even some Kempo as he grew his knowledge and base of martial understanding.

Lucaylucay's martial arts journey took a significant turn when he encountered Grandmaster Cabales and Grandmaster Giron.

29

Grandmaster Cabales, despite being in his 60s, possessed an endless source of energy and was known for his quickness with both the stick and empty hand techniques.

Ted’s primary FMA (Filipino Martial Arts) styles became the Serrada system directly under the tutelage of Grandmaster Angel Cabales, the Lago Mano system under Grandmaster Leo Giron, and the Villabralle / Kali style under Grandmaster Ben Largusa. Both masters shared their knowledge generously, imparting not just techniques but also a deep sense of gratitude and dedication to the art.

Moving to Los Angeles, he had the opportunity to train with Guru Dan Inosanto, who was a close friend of Bruce Lee and the inheritor of the Bruce Lee system of Jeet Kun Do. Ted was invited to private training sessions in Inosanto's backyard, where he became captivated by the proposed style of JKD. Even though he initially intended to study the Filipino art of Eskrima, he found himself drawn to this new art created by Bruce Lee himself.

Ted Lucaylucay and Jerry Poteet were the first to graduate from in the JKD lineage under Dan Inosanto and Grandmaster Leo Giron. To Ted it was such a privilege to be a part of the initial foundation of the JKD system and school it would later become.

30
5

Ted Lucaylucay was never one to search for the limelight or self-promote, as he once told me about his days teaching the JKD system and his own association.

In the early 1970s, when the JKD system was being presented. There were so many followers, and as it became more popular, there began some controversies over the original JKD system and JKD concepts, in his own words, controversy sales. Some of the JKD people were trying to sell their politics and their products; martial arts is no different than anything else in the world, no different from any other business.

In his opinion it did not seem that the philosophy of the martial arts was being practiced. It was more than just hitting or beating up on somebody there’s a whole life associated with it, and it wasn’t being taught in that manner when Ted was young he enjoyed the physical aspects of the practice hitting and being hit but as he grew, he later understood that was more about brotherhood and harmony within the martial arts family itself. Ted got disillusioned and disappointed this made him Choose his own path in his own association. Ted began his Temujin Lucaylucay Kali / JKD system.

31

The Temujin refers to the Mongolian warlord Ghangis Khan who’s birth name was Temujin.

The Chinese gave him the name Genghis Khan, but Temujin was responsible for bringing all of the Mongolian tribes together he banded them into one. I’ve let them to be great conquerors and developers.

Ted was enthralled with this ideology, and took the name for his own association, as to bring all other groups together as one to become more powerful, Ted’s teaching philosophy was to lay a good foundation and then be open minded enough to build something upon that like building a house with a strong foundation, build an even stronger bond through the martial arts.

All the principles of centerline attitude could be narrowly. focused, and would bring out, the best aspects of them all of the principles would intertwine.

The LucayLucay Kali/JKD Asso. motto is to “Show and Do” They taught not to dismiss traditions but that one should be able to apply what they know in a real fight.

32

Theirs was a process of elimination, not accumulation. The basic techniques, trained well, get a person through a fight.

As a proponent of the Panatukan art and his Temujin system and school, Ted developed relationships with teachers and students of various arts and styles.

Guro Ted was happy to travel and share his knowledge with others, teaching seminars and classes worldwide.

Show and Do”

Ted Lucaylucay's legacy as a martial arts legend continues to inspire and influence practitioners today. From his humble beginnings as an eskrimador to his mastery of various martial arts disciplines, Lucaylucay's dedication and passion for the art are evident. His contributions to the Filipino martial arts community and commitment to passing on his knowledge have left an enduring impact. As we honor his memory, we recognize the invaluable lessons he taught and the indomitable spirit he embodied.

Ted initiated my experience with the Filipino martial arts, leading me to a 30 year love of the art I often reflect on my friendship with Ted as a lifelong endeavor to promote martial arts in a positive light something that has not changed 35 years later as the son of the late Lucky Lucaylucay And one of Dan Santos original backyard students Ted dedicated his life to promoting martial arts with Filipino martial arts, as well as the JKD systems and Bruce Lee.

On March 30, 1996 at his home, Ted had succumb to heart failure after suffering a dramatic, asthma attack he was only 50 years old. He has been survived by his mother, Rose, his sisters, Beverly, Arlene, Laverne Coraline, Gary, Rosalyn, and Audrey he has left his association to the executive officers of Leonard Trigg in Oregon, Greg Allen of Texas, Mark Stewart

of California all of his students. Remember his kind heart, good humor and exceptional martial arts, skill, his friends remember his warm smile, his heartwarming spirit, and the love of a man with dedication not only to his martial arts, but to his friends, his students and his family. He is forever missed in all of our hearts a true legend. My friend and teacher Ted Lucaylucay.

GARY DILL

JJKD KD TThe he Old WAY Old WAY

Monthly Column from a true legend in the art. Gary Dill talks about the old ways.

My first introduction to Jeet Kune Do (JKD) was in 1966 when I saw Bruce Lee as “Kato” in the TV show ‘Green Hornet.” I was a Goju Karate instructor at the time, working my way through college, and I was impressed with his speed and techniques

I wanted to learn his system, but I was just a college student in Oklahoma, and he was a “TV star” in California. But as fate would have it, it happened. In 1971, when I was in Vietnam, I read an article about Bruce’s JKD school taught by James Lee in Oakland, CA. I knew I would be rotated to the Bay Area after my Nam tour, so I took a chance and wrote to him. He wrote back to me and told me to contact him upon my return. I did, and this was the most important thing that happened to me in my martial arts career.

James Lee was my instructor. I had just missed Bruce Lee by a couple of weeks. But that was okay because James was well known in California as the man to go to for JKD training. He was Bruce Lee’s right-hand man and helped him convert techniques from Wing Chun to JKD after the Won Jack Man fight

Bruce and Linda lived with James for some time at this Oakland home. The class was held in his garage. He had special handmade equipment on all three walls geared for JKD training. The class was small, with only 5-10 students at any given time

I was very much into sparring during my ten years in karate. As a result, I fell in love with Jeet Kune Do. The Oakland JKD had no katas, rituals, or aesthetics; all the training was geared toward actual combat in the street. The Oakland JKD aggressively blended Wing Chun gung fu, boxing, and fencing.

James would tell us that one would never be good at JKD unless they had developed the “killer instinct.” Since I just returned from Vietnam, I understood exactly what he meant.

kept detailed notes every night after class because I knew the importance of what was been taught. I am so glad that I had the insight to do that. After being discharged from the military in late 1972, I returned to Oklahoma to finish college.

JJKD KD The Old WAY The Old WAY Cont...

Soon after I got back to Oklahoma, James Lee sent me written permission to “share” JKD with my students, in which he also included a two-year JKD training outline (which was authored by Bruce) for use in teaching my class. To my knowledge, I am the only one to which James gave this training guide.

In December 1972, I officially started teaching JKD. I have been teaching JKD consistently since then (52 years) because it works in the street.

I spent ten years in the military and ten years in law enforcement and had several occasions to use it. Because of the notes I kept every night after class and the Bruce Lee two-year lesson plan provided to me by James, I have the most in-depth JKD curriculum out there today. During the last 52 years, I have trained thousands of students and certified several hundred qualified instructors

I still work every day, teaching weekly group classes and providing private instructions, and since 1989, I have been teaching JKD seminars here in the US and Internationally. I am deeply involved in other martial arts, but JKD is still my foundation. I owe everything I am in the martial arts to James Lee and Bruce Lee. I owe them a debt that can never be repaid
