Course description

This course offers a wide range of topics focusing on communicative skills, cultural and intercultural awareness as well as life skills in general. Each of the three lessons focuses on a specific area of language learning: receptive skills, language focus, learning strategies, productive skills. Materials used in the course are all up-to-date and focus on engaging upto-date topics. The aim of this course is to improve your fluency and make you a more confident language learner.

Academic objectives We are very happy to welcome you to your International Projects language experience designed especially for you by our own IP schools; Europa School of English, a British Council accredited school and CELF, our French language school. Our academic aim is to help you to improve and to become confident in your all-round language ability so you can achieve your individual goals, such as experiencing travelling abroad (maybe for the first time), your career development and personal growth. In class your teacher will help you to improve in both receptive and productive skills, to develop intercultural competence and to enable you to become a more autonomous learner, so that your learning can continue after you leave us.

Enjoyable lessons – effective learning We use a range of different materials, such as course books, the Internet, authentic materials and your own experience. You will do a lot of pair and group work whilst focusing on project work. This will help you to assist each other to complete gaps in your knowledge and exchange ideas. For our Teens Students over the age of 13 work with a new Internetbased curriculum. Most of our classrooms are equipped with internet access. These teaching materials facilitate access to the most up-todate and contemporary topics related to our students’ experience.

For our Kids Students under the age of 13 work with a specifically designed Young Learners’ S yllabus, based on a variety of teaching materials from different sources. This syllabus concentrates on interesting topics, contents and learning activities for younger students and is not entirely internet-based.

The course consists of the General Course plus an additional lesson per day which focuses on a fourth area of language learning: Project-based lesson with emphasis on writing skills.

Trinity Graded Examinations in Spoken English for speakers of other languages provide an internationally recognised scheme of assessment through which you can measure your language development for educational or vocational purposes. The awarded grades range from 1 (absolute beginner) to 12 (very advanced). The Trinity Oral Examination can be prepared for and taken in Exeter only.

This course consists of the Intensive Course plus afternoon lessons. Students work with culture-based materials towards a final presentation. You will be exposed to cultural input and improve your presentation skills.

The lessons are based on the same concept as the Intensive Course. Working in very small groups allows you to focus on your own language needs and areas to strengthen. Together with the teacher, you can decide what you want to work on and which aspects of language you want to improve.

This course consists of two parts. In the morning you take part in the Intensive English Course. For the afternoon session, you will have a cultural lesson preparing you for an excursion. After the excursion there will be a tutorial. You will work on a small presentation relating to the cultural activities. Additionally, you will have the possibility to assess your own capabilities and receive individual tutoring.

Arrival

Transfer

We are happy to welcome you at one of the several airports close to our different language schools. Many airlines ensure that children travelling alone receive the best attention, thereafter, they are escorted by the airline-staff from the moment they arrive at the airport, check-in, until they reach their destination. If you book an Unaccompanied-MinorService with your airline, please be sure to request our IP Unaccompanied-Minor-Service as well.

Transfers from/to your IP language school (airport or train station) can be provided as an additional service. All individual transfers: we work with long-term and wellestablished business partners. The driver will wait for you at arrivals and drop you off at your terminal on day of departure. If you prefer assistance for Check-in, please book our Checkin service separately. Low budget transfer (UK only): on the day of arrival our Meet & Greet Service will be waiting for you at the terminal (until 17:00) to accompany you to your transfer service. On the day of departure a staff member will help you to your terminal and check you in. For a detailed description of our transfers, please check our website or get in touch with us!

Secure supervision The cornerstone of our supervision is the TTT (Time to Talk) which takes place three times per day. You will be part of a weekly TTT group in which one particular supervisor is responsible for you and makes sure that you know what to do, and can get all the information you need. There is a strong link between the supervisor and his/her TTT group. The lunch and dinner-time TTTs can be rather short as they mainly serve to give an overview of what the students are doing in the next couple of hours. 10-12 year olds: Our supervision concept for juniors is based upon a compulsory activity programme with options for you to choose from. The staff ratio for this age group is 1:10 with TTT-groups of up to 15 students. It is not possible for your parents to give you permission to leave the campus without supervision. 13 to 15 year olds: You participate in a compulsory programme with a range of activities such as indoor, beach and City Centre activities. You are not allowed to leave the campus without staff members - even if your parents give you the permission to do so. The staff ratio for this age group is 1:15 with TTT-groups of up to 25 students. The programme is compulsory for you in this age group, and you can choose from the various options. 16 to 17 year olds: Teenagers aged 16 or older are free to experience and explore things with their friends (must be in pairs) on and off campus. Our supervisors provide a good mix of supervision and personal freedom for this age group. Participation in the afternoon activity programme is voluntary. You will not be allowed to leave the campus without supervision after dinner, the supervision ratio for this age group is 1:25 with TTT groups of up to 25 students also. Our supervisors may restrict your level of freedom if necessary, for example if you don’t follow our centre rules! These rules also apply for closed groups accompanied by group leader/s. Additional regulations for students in homestay 10-12 year olds: We do not normally accept students aged 12 and below in homestay. We may make exceptions to this if your agency is sending a closed group and there are special circumstances.

In these exceptional circumstances, if the host is further than 0.5 miles from the school, the student will have an accompanied transfer (with supplement) from the homestay to the campus, and back again in time for dinner. In these cases participation in the evening programme is not possible. Where the group leader accompanies the student on their transfer, the student may participate in the evening activities too. 13 to 15 year olds & 16 to 17 year olds: Homestay students only have one TTT around lunchtime, when they need to inform their supervisor about their plans for the day and for the evening. In the evenings the students can either take part in the activity programme or stay in their homestay, as long as the homestay host is at home. You will find more detailed information on our website: http://www.internationalprojects.com/en/summer-courses/ activity-programme.html

We take care of the parents It is a huge step for parents to let their child travel abroad (probably for the first time). We are aware of that, which is why we are available 24/7! Besides our office hours, we provide an emergency number during the season. Our staff are always in contact with the teams in the IP language schools and resolve all issues as soon as possible.

Learn more than a language Schools with personality The learning environment in our language schools is very important to us. We have chosen our destinations carefully and always seek to create pleasant surroundings for our students. Our schools are located on traditional English university campuses, in an English boarding school, a stunning castle, a modern Youth Hostel or for example in a former church, which has been completely renovated. The city centres and hot spots of your destination are always nearby!

Typical day at IP

Young people from all over the world meet in our schools to spend their holidays learning a foreign language together. The lessons reflect local life and tie in intercultural experiences such as understanding life in other cultures and countries. In the afternoons and evenings there is an extensive activity programme organised by our International Team. You will try new things and find out what is important to you. It’s fun and lets your personality shine through. You will get to know your own talents and interests better than you thought and at the same time you’ll develop your social and team-working skills by doing activities with your friends. As everything is done in the foreign language, you’ll be able to put your language skills into practice. Within no time, you’ll begin to notice how much easier the language is when used on a regular basis.

On your first day of school you will take a placement test. Afterwards you’ll be placed in the appropriate study group so that you and your peers can learn more effectively. Most language classes take place in the morning so that in the afternoon our students can participate in the activity programme. Depending on your progress in language ability, you can choose to have lessons in the afternoon as well. During our daily assembly we’ll give you all the information you need and the TTTs (time to talk) are to clarify your questions and concerns. After lunch it’s time for action. Take part in our afternoon and evening activities 7 days a week or just socialise with your new friends.

Activity programme 7 days a week We offer an exciting and supervised activity programme during afternoons and evenings – 7 days a week. Our staff members come from diverse backgrounds, allowing them to bring a wide range of skills that will enrich your stay. The team organises a varied activity programme - full of sports, creativity, culture and lifestyle that will motivate you to join in. In the afternoons you have the choice of various activities on offer and in the evenings there is always at least one planned activity for you to participate in. For our youngest students (10-15 yrs) we offer our programme as a compulsory age-appropriate full programme throughout the week. All students aged 16 & 17 years have the freedom to choose afternoon activities from our programme or ask for permission to spend time on their own in case we can ensure their safety. Evening activities are compulsory please also look at page 7 “Secure supervision”.

IP Ocean Lounge The international meeting point in our summer schools is the IP Ocean Lounge, which is a chill-out area to relax in and get together. The Fruit n’ Fit Corner provides fresh fruit and water to our students all day long - 7 days a week.

Biarritz

Bournemouth & Biarritz Our language programme for Senior students (16+) is suitable for independent, matureminded students. In Bournemouth and Biarritz, our staff members do not supervise you but instead provide guidance on how to enjoy your holiday (safely). After lessons you enjoy the freedom, as well as the safety net, of having a responsible IP Senior Coordinator whom you meet during the welcome meeting upon arrival. He/she will help you should there be a problem and you will be able to contact him/her at any time. The coordinator shows you around your course town, introduces you to local hot spots and possible dangers. The coordinator also provides all the information you might need in order to plan your holidays and will have dinner (Bournemouth only) with you every day. During the summer we will also offer some activities for you to socialise with other students.
