REMINDERS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS ISP HANDWASHING CAMPAIGN
#IAMISP #IAM HEALTHY In our continued efforts to promote health and wellness at ISP our Nutrition Committee has launched a hand washing campaign aimed at reminding all dolphins that hand washing can help prevent the spread of disease at our school. We have placed hand sanitizing stations outside the entrance of the ES Cafeteria entrance. In the MS/HS the sanitation stations are on the pillars as well as at the start of the cafeteria food service line. If you cannot locate hand sanitizer please contact the cafeteria personnel so the dispensers can be refilled or so that they can provide you with hand sanitizer. Thank you for helping keep all of us healthy! #thereisnoplacelikeisp Read more here.

Parent/Teacher Conferences – Thank you! We want to send a huge thank you to all of our parents who attended a parent teacher conference over the last two days. It was amazing to see our 1st-5th grade students sharing their work and goals with their parents so that both teachers and parents can support their learning growth over the coming months. Please note that you do not have to wait for the scheduled conference days to meet with your child’s teacher. You can set up a meeting to talk about their progress at any time throughout the year. If for some reason, you were unable to meet with your child’s teacher these last two days, please plan on setting up a time to meet with them in the next few weeks.
Parent Coffees – Digital Citizenship and Conscious Discipline Please plan on joining us for one (or both!) of our next parent coffee meetings! Tuesday, October 18th from 8:30-9:30 in the ES conference room to talk about what it means to be a Digital Citizen Friday, October 21st from 7:45-8:45 in the ES conference room for the Conscious Discipline #2 Training

Celebration of Middle School Legacies: #ISPGIVES BACK During our Opening Assembly this year, I presented the following quote to Middle School students: "The things you do for yourself are gone when you are gone, but the things you do for others remain as your legacy" - Kalu Kalu. I challenged students to reflect on what this means to them and how their decisions and actions can impact their future legacies in our ISP Middle School community. Throughout the first nine weeks of school, we have had many students work together to plant seeds for these long-term legacies. I would like to recognize just a few of these students whose work and efforts are worthy of recognition in this week’s Dolphin Dispatch. A group of eighth grade Service Learning students came together to support Operation Smile – an international medical charity that provides surgeries for children with cleft lips and palates. Maria A., Claire L, Mariana M. and Lina S. put forth a public awareness campaign during Monday Morning Assembly and advisories. Their efforts, which culminated in a yellow shirt campaign in Elementary and Middle School, resulted in contributions to our community of $1600. Students have also investigated global environmental issues, looking to local challenges to find solutions to which they can contribute. From these investigations, a Recycling Initiative was undertaken by grade eight Service Learning students Adel Y., Sebastian G. and Mauricio R. These students developed a mini-curriculum for educating younger students about environmental issues in general and the importance of recycling in particular. Following this educational outreach, students collaborated with the Elementary School to relabel recycling bins to promote awareness and follow-through with our recycling program. In addition to leaving a legacy in medical and environmental outreach, students have turned to social issues to make their marks. A group of 7th grade Service Learning students - Marian C., Delfina H., Regina P. and Maria M. - created a public awareness campaign on gender equality and perceptions of gender roles. Their “Like a Girl” campaign linked local public service announcements and awareness to a global hashtag campaign for #likeagirl. In this way, students were able to connect an issue of immediate concern to our Middle School community to a global initiative. Finally, some students have taken initiative to contribute to their local community beyond the classroom. A pair of sixth grade students Clara D. and Arantza R. spend their weekends selling jewelry and accessories to raise funds for FANLYC – a local charity devoted to providing aid to children with cancer and their families. Their efforts have already netted $200 and continue to grow. We, as a community, are very proud of the efforts made by these young ladies and gentlemen and look forward to celebrating future celebrations of our Middle School students! Congratulations one and all.

The day 8th grade student Ellie Jones received an e-mail about an upcoming math contest that Khan Academy was sponsoring, she knew she wanted to enter. With only about a month left to submit her video, she had to work extra hard to make it happen. With the help of 8th grade algebra teacher Mrs. Wood and math coach Mrs. Marina, Ellie had to create a video about a college-level math theorem that was under five minutes. Her video was about the four color theorem. She entered the breakthrough junior challenge. Take a look at her video! #thereisnoplacelikeisp
