International Week in the Elementary School This week we celebrated the diversity in our elementary school through our Pod assembly and International Day parade and cultural lunches. On Tuesday, October 18, students and staff joined together in the Performing Arts Auditorium to sing “We Are Children of Peace” in 2 new languages. If you haven’t seen the video that we produced with all of our elementary students, please visit the link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPWprZQUgMo.
On Wednesday, October 19 we were joined by many of you as we held our annual international parade through our elementary school. The national pride was tangible and the sights were incredible as our students and children walked around the school, sharing a part of their cultural heritage. The cultural lunches in the classroom that followed the parade were diverse and delicious. We embody the meaning of the International School of Panama and this week provides many opportunities for us to celebrate what this really means. Thank you to all of the parents who shared time, food, and attention to make this week as beautiful and rich as it was.

Digital Citizenship-Parent Coffee On Tuesday, October 18 we hosted a coffee to talk about student and parent responsibilities related to being a responsible digital citizen. We did not have many parents attend so we will be rescheduling this coffee at a later time.
New online programs and applications We are in the process of reviewing our software and application subscriptions to identify those that complement what we do at school and can be used at home. Look for more information in coming months with new subscriptions and logins for your children to some online programs. We’ll be certain to share information with parents about expectations and needs, as well.

World Food Day By Sofia Cardenas “Because when it comes to hunger, the only acceptable number in the world is zero." Don’t underestimate me, I love food. But let's not underestimate food either. Thousands of people are not fortunate enough to have it. It is estimated that one out of every nine people don’t have access to enough food in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Read more here.

Athletics: #GOISPDOLPHINS! Peter Smyth, Athletic Director—psmyth@isp.edu.pa My role as parent of an athlete I have shared many of these thoughts before but as the various teams progress this semester , or not, it is worth recapping our role as parents in our child's sporting lives. Steve Henson's article is a good read regardless if you are a sub 10 parent or Varsity parent. http://www.thepostgame.com/blog/more-family-fun/201202/what-makes-nightmare-sports-parent
Looking ahead to next week. I particularly like Bruce Brown of Pro Active coaching and his work with student athletes and their parents. th Parents must “release the athlete, toSaturday the team18 andApril to the coach.” Once you as a parent have established physical and emotional safety for your child Monday (by choosing great 20thaApril team or coach), then release your child to that experience. Think about where you can release your kids, where do you want your kids to take risks, where do you want them to fail? “Healthy risks = healthy failures.” Before the first game, the first performance, askstyourself as Tuesday 21 April a parent: Do I want my child to play? If so, why? What will be a successful season for me as a parent? Thursday 23rd April What are my goals for my child? What do I think their role will be on this team?24th April Friday Then ask your child the same questions, and just listen to the answers. If the answers are in agreement, then th April If not, Saturday 25great. drop yours and accept your child’s. The top reasons all kids play are for fun, joy, and friends, notSunday for college 26th scholarship April potential. Red flags that indicate you may not be releasing: If you continue to share the credit when things go well If you try to solve all the problems that come up in the season If you continue to try to coach them, after they stop wanting it (or when they probably know more about it than you do — “lacrosse is booming because kids are attracted to activities their parents know nothing about”) If you catch yourself yelling at an official during a game If your kids avoid you after a game, or don’t want to talk about it
During the game: Be there!

Ligathe 10game v SuntoYat Let them bring youSen @ Maracana @ 11am Be a confidence builder! Every adult in a kid’s life is either a confidence-builder or confidence-cutter (and kids are well aware of who is who). Two things allow kids to work through life confidently: one person within their family who loves them unconditionally, and one person outside the family who believes in them. This person is almost always a teacher or a coach. For me with young boys that I am trying to help grow in confidence I focus on these 2 comments: “I love watching you play” and “I love you trying something even though you’re not the best”
If you’re nervous before a game If the outcome lasts longer with you than with them If your spouse doesn’t like to sit next to you during a game
