HONORING PANAMA FOR MES DE LA PATRIA A very special thank you to our amazing teachers in the Elementary Spanish Department and all the Parents that volunteered their time and put great effort towards making this one of the best Mes de la Patria celebrations in our school’s history. It was spectacular to see all of our elementary students practice and then perform beautifully on stage in the PAC for the first time ever! We continued to be inspired by the Panamanian and International members of our community that take this event to heart and help us celebrate our host country of Panama. FANLYC Christmas Party Volunteers Needed We partner with FANLYC to support their annual Christmas party for children in Panama who are receiving medical care due to cancer or leukemia. Our elementary school has been collecting toys for our “Toy Mountain,” and our SRC students will be delivering the mountain of toys on Monday, December 7. However, there is one more step in the process and we need your help! The actual Christmas party for the FANLYC children will be taking place on Sunday, December 18 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. We are asking for volunteers from our parent community! ISP will be organizing a Christmas ornament craft booth for the children of FANLYC. If you can volunteer some time on this day, please sign-up online for a one hour time slot. Unfortunately, due to the sick nature of the children who are attending, FANLYC is requesting that no other outside children come as volunteers this year. If you have any questions, please reach out to Sandy Stargardter or Kelle Bongard.

Elementary School Becky Jobes, PhD—Elementary Principal—bjobes@isp.edu.pa “A Colorful Christmas Toy Drive” Dear ISP Families, This holiday season, a time of sharing, our school will again host a “Toy-a-Thon” to benefit the children at FANLYC. This gift donation will replace the classic class gift exchange between our students during this season. As many of you already know, FANLYC is an organization that covers the cost of cancer treatment for over 900 children all over Panama. FANLYC organizes a Christmas party for the children they serve as part of the social-emotional support their foundation provides. This year this party will take place Sunday, December 11th and at this event, each FANLYC child receives at least five presents. Sadly, for some of these children, this might be their last Christmas and others have been through very hard and painful times; therefore FANLYC wants them to have a wonderful Christmas and nice gifts to remember. Here at ISP we want to contribute to this cause by having each ISP student in the Elementary School bring a new toy to share with a FANLYC friend. We emphasize that the gift must be new and NOT WRAPPED. We are asking for your participation by purchasing and sending to school an unwrapped gift that will be shared with a FANLYC child. The recommended gift value is $15-$20 for the age group assigned to your child’s grade level. If your child is a boy, send a boy gift. If your child is a girl, send a girl gift. PK3/4= age 4-6 years K= age 6-8 years

1st grade= age 8-10 years 2nd grade= age 10-12 years 3rd grade= age 12-14 years 4th grade = age 9-11 years 5th grade= any age group We will be collecting donations starting Monday, Nov. 21st until Friday, December 2nd. With your support we would like to build a huge “Toy Mountain” in the Elementary School as a gift from the ISP community to these brave children. The Student Representative Council will be delivering these gifts to the FANLYC house the week of December 5th. You can find more information at www.fanlyc.org.pa. FANLYC calls people who help them “Little Stars” (Estrellitas) and they have a song that goes “Come little star, like you I want to shine” So let’s all be “estrellitas”. Sincerely,

FANLYC Committee, Kindergarten Team, and the Student Representative

Middle School Vickie Swann Middle School Principal vswann@isp.edu.pa

VIVA PANAMA AND VIVA MIDDLE SCHOOL The Middle School enjoyed the opportunity to come together as a division and celebrate the history and culture of Panama. This celebration involved dancing, skits in both Spanish and French, and the sharing of poetry written by esteemed Panamanian writers as well as ISP students. Our honored guest was Professor Arturo Wong who was recently awarded The Ricardo MirĂł national literature prize. Additionally, the Director's List students entered to join our celebration by leading the flag ceremony portion of the events. Our masters of ceremony were Panamanian Studies students Isabel Fonseca and Hamza Yaafar. They also performed a special dance called 'El Punto.' The Middle School Folkloric Group, including students from each grade of the division, performed wonderfully throughout the event including interpretations of 'La Denesa', and 'Fiesta en el pueblo', among others. Teachers also contributed to the events with a Congo dance as well as a celebration of Panamanian Polleras through a dance called 'El Tamborito.' This was a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate our host country. We look forward to many exciting opportunities to celebrate Panama's cultural richness. MESSAGE FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL: December is here along with the long lists of wished for presents, people who are naughty or nice, and resolutions. I would like to add another list that includes recognitions and thoughts for this busy time of year. Recognizing the individuals who make things happen is important. I want to provide a “Shout out” to the Dolphin Staff, Ms. Franco plus members of the Spanish Department, Jose Rios and Erika Arauz for the Near Space success, and also the students who have successful completed the university application process. Click here to read more of the High School Principal’s letter.

Near Space Program Soars to New Heights On Monday, November 28, 2016, students leading our ISP Near Space Program performed the successful launch and retrieval of CP-1. The capsule mission was dubbed the Carlos Perez mission – in honor of our late teacher, colleague, and friend – Mr. Carlos Perez. To also honor Coach Perez’s culture, the students wrote the word “Gana” on the topside of the capsule which means “smart person” in Kuna. Click here to read more and see pictures from the mission. MES DE LA PATRIA PICTURES Ms. Franco: Each year, Ms. Franco works with the students from the various Panamanian Diploma courses to put together a celebration of Panamanian history and culture. To see the students dancing, playing instruments, and working collaboratively makes for a wonderful day in the life of the school. Ms. Franco’s passion and dedication makes the show possible. The teamwork of the entire Spanish Department created a seamless production with back stage organization and student supervision. Remembering the history and culture of Panama is critical and this event is one very important event in the day-to-day life of the school. ZUBATHOIN FOR FANLYC The FANLYC 4 All team is proud to announce its very first Zumbathon at ISP! On the upcoming December 6th, from 3:00 - 4:15, students, parents and teachers will be able to dance at the rhythm of zumba in order to raise funds for the FANLYC organization. Our 'adopted' kid, Jose Angel, would be greatly benefited from all money collected. In addition, this is a great opportunity for the ISP community to come together and engage in some healthy physical activity in order to provide stress relief and fun! The Zumbathon will be hosted at the HS/MS gym and the cost for admission is $3.00! An experienced Zumba instructor will dictate the course and goodies and beverages will be provided! We hope to see you all there!
