WEST SIDE STORY : BEHIND THE CURTAIN Thanks to everyone who came out to see West Side Story. We have included a compilation of some video taken over the course of the three month process to show what you DIDN'T see. Putting a show together takes a lot of hard work, determination and dedication from so many people, and this is just another way to see the learning of the ISP VAPA students.

THANK YOU FOR COMING TO OUR TRANSITIONS PARENTS COFFEE We would like to thank all of the parents that attended our transitions parent coffee last week. We felt honored to have such a delightful group joining us at such a busy time. We know how difficult last minute arrangements and errands can be before moving. It is hard at times to schedule a moment to come to the parent coffees, yet many of you made the effort, and we truly appreciate it. Click here to read more.

Coming soon: A new math application for students to use at home In our ongoing effort to support students with learning outside of the classroom we have been searching for a way to offer in-home math learning opportunities for children, which will also allow parents to see what is happening at school. This week we will be sending home information about a new math application called Dreambox. Dreambox is an adaptive math program that uses an online gaming platform to reinforce the standards and learning strategies that we use at ISP. Dreambox is differentiated for each student, supports English language learners, and is highly engaging and fun. Students have been working on Dreambox at school for up to 4 weeks and teachers have been working to understand the program and find the best ways to use it to support student learning. We invite you to go and learn more about the program at https://www.dreambox.com/at-home and we look forward to sharing more information with you soon. In January we will have a parent coffee for math that will include an overview of Dreambox and share more of what is happening in our classrooms. As a little insight into our approach, I’ve attached an article from Jo Boaler, a well-known math educator.
Return date for Semester 2: January 12, 2017 Our instruction starts on Thursday, January 12. Students need to be at school that day so that we can begin the second semester with all of our students.

Reader’s Theatre In High School IB English Literature Junior IB literature students prepare for IB oral presentations in a variety of ways, including Reader’s Theatre, which encourages students to dramatize their readings of poetry. While reading Wilfred Owens’ poem “Inspection,” IB students not only had to distinguish between three different “voices” in the lines, but also needed to understand how the Macbeth allusion fit into the theme of this highly dramatic piece of World War I poetry. INNOVATION CERTIFICATE STUDENTS SHOW PROMISE
This week 10 ISP students participating in the Innovation Certificate presented their projects to a panel of observers. The students participating in this pilot program of the Innovation Certificate have been exploring the issue of water conservation. Each participant was given the option to work individually or in a group to create a product or solution that would address issues related to water conservation. As part of their presentations the students explained the rationale behind their idea or solution, the research they conducted, prototypes and testing, challenges, as well as opportunities to expand and continue refining their project. Two of the observers on the panel shared some of the impressions following the presentations: “I was very impressed by the creativity and range of the proposed solutions which demonstrated some really original thinking and spanned both aspects of the innovation and entrepreneurship components of the program.” - Rajiv Bhat Director
“The students are presenting working prototypes of projects at their school that are on the same level as the projects I have seen on calls for applications for grants and awards.” -Matthew Hotsko, Fundacion Eco Studio, ISP Alum Class of 2003 As the end of the semester approaches students will be asked to self evaluate their progress and decide to continue their project or adopt a new approach. We wish all of the participants continued success moving forward.
