FRIENDS FOR CHANGE By: Melany Morales

Friends for Change is an organization that Melany Morales created with the help of Ellie Jones in order to help the Malambo orphanage and an animal shelter. They are fervent to raise awareness as well as help these organizations as much as possible. Most weekends, they go volunteer in the orphanage and take care of the infants. In the past, Melany and Ellie have already collected money for the orphanage at the Holiday Shop and are very thankful for the donations and undivided support they’ve received. Very soon, Melany and Ellie are planning on hosting several more events and are hoping to continue this project in the future. They welcome anyone who is willing to join them and support this cause as they feel that any small gesture will definitely make a difference in these lives. Fundraising Details: HELP MAKE A CHANGE! Their notion for this month is to hold an event in order to collect clothes from students and faculty in the school for the Malambo orphanage. They will have a bucket in the PAC so that people can drop off their used clothes there, and every two weeks, Melany and Ellie will take the clothes to Malambo. With the cooperation of many, they are hoping to donate enough clothes for the children. Fundraising will last for two months will begin on February 17th in the Performing Arts Center Ticket Booth. Watch the video for more details.

TRANSPORTATION NOTICE

Dear ISP Community, A principal objective of our Transportation and Security Office is to help ensure student safety when traveling to and from school. The implementation of our policies and guidelines directly depend of the active participation and support of our student and parent community. In the past week’s we have been made aware of some behaviors when dropping students off at home, causing some inconveniences for families and delays in the bus routes. To be clear the delays are being caused by the absence of a parent or guardian when students are being dropped off. As a result bus drivers and monitors are being delayed 15-20 minutes while they wait for the student to be picked up by a parent or guardian. This has a cascading effect on the remainder of the bus route, causing further delays. With increased traffic expected after Carnaval break, due to the start of Panamanian private and public schools, it is ever more important that we work together to ensure our transportation procedures are being followed. Please be advised, that as per our policies and procedures all students must be received (picked up) by their guardian or parent at the bus drop off point, to ensure students are properly delivered to their destination in a safe and secure manner. The transportation and security office as well as the companies that provide ISP families with transportation services, greatly appreciate your consideration and action regarding this situation. We will continue to work diligently with the bus service providers to ensure students return home safely and on time. Thank you for your cooperation. Best regards, Jose Cruz Jimenez, Security and Transportation Manager

Hats at recess! On Monday, February 6 at our flag ceremony some students from 3rd grade shared information about sun safety. Their main message was that hats are a great way to stay safe from the sun, and our students have responded by bringing in hats from home. We are very excited about this and are writing to you to encourage more of this. While our uniform policy states that students should wear ISP hats, we are allowing other hats during recess times. Innovating Mathematics In Middle School The ISP middle school Math Department is constantly learning innovative and fun ways to help all students learn. During the first

semester our teachers had the opportunity to take an online course offered by Stanford University Professor Jo Boaler centering on developing mathematical mindsets in all students. This semester we are helping students to develop growth mindsets in math through self-assessments, number

talks to develop flexible strategies, and authentic real-world problems and projects. The focus throughout math courses in ISP middle school is developing the standards of mathematical practices, including perseverance, collaboration, communication, reflection, and

mathematical modeling. Read more here.
